EUROPE PLANS, PREPARES AND INVESTS FOR A FUTURE HYDROGEN ECONOMY n a two part article Rinnai’s Chris Goggin looks at the growth and development of the present European and international hydrogen market. The UK is not alone in its faltering progress towards NetZero. Here he offers detailed information, of direct importance to any consumer either in the commercial or residential markets, about future international and continental energy proposals that will likely affect UK consumer options and costs.

Germany has manoeuvred itself, amongst other EU countries, to take a leading role in becoming hydrogen ready, not just for the aim of NetZero but also for the creation of a whole new industry. The German government is vocal of its intention to become the lead nation in all hydrogen concerns.

Germany is Europe’s largest economy and ranks as the fourth largest internationally. Germany houses two of the four largest ports on mainland Europe, as well as also holding vital road and rail links with Rotterdam – Europe’s largest port, who incidentally have also announced intentions to incorporate hydrogen into future plans. In addition to a provided “stimulus” financial package that supports the development of hydrogen technologies, the German government intend to deliver a further 7 billion euros in this field of research, as well as another 2 billion euros aimed at developing international partnerships which focus on advancing hydrogen technology. As of May 2021, an additional 8 billion euros has been sanctioned to explore 62 large-scale hydrogen projects. A majority of the funding will focus on manufacturing electrolysers, used for green hydrogen production, and creating sufficient infrastructure able to transport pure hydrogen and alternative hydrogen gas blends. Specifically, the German government intends to construct 1,700 kilometres of new pipeline. This will be sit on the German-Dutch border and run from east to west Germany. The pipeline will provide domestic and commercial energy and can be used to export hydrogen to neighbouring countries. (Euractiv 28th May 2021) In attempting to create hydrogen as a central component in its decarbonisation strategy,

Germany aims to nullify all electric costs accumulated in the process of producing green hydrogen. A levy on electrical costs will enable manufacturing of bulk green hydrogen with the long term aim of substantially reducing consumer cost. The German NHS (National Hydrogen Strategy) further details the idea that not all renewable and hydrogen facilities can be built on German soil, raising the possibility of neighbouring countries entering a collaborative hydrogen production and distribution effort. Germany’s neighbour, The Netherlands, also released its own national hydrogen strategy. The Dutch hydrogen strategy acknowledges that a portion of German hydrogen demand will pass through the Netherlands as imports. Currently 13% of imported German coal and oil is transported directly through the Port of Rotterdam. Once an established decarbonized supply of hydrogen is active, German hydrogen fuel imports are predicted to expand once consumer demand increases. The Port of Rotterdam is already Western Europe’s leading hub of energy redistribution due to its strategic geographical positioning in North West Europe. 8, 800 petajoules of energy is annually imported and exported through Rotterdam oversees. This amounts to almost three times the yearly energy demand of the Netherlands and 13% of the total energy demand in the entire EU. The PoR (Port of Rotterdam) has revealed plans to construct its own hydrogen manufacturing hub capable of facilitating domestic and commercial power. This move towards hydrogen improves emissions and places the PoR at the forefront of a future international hydrogen economy.

The Dutch port plans to independently produce both blue and green hydrogen. Current stocks of grey hydrogen which contain low levels of toxic properties will be converted into blue carbon neutral hydrogen via a subterranean infrastructure and stored underground ready for utilization. Green hydrogen will be electrically generated off shore through wind power and transported across high voltage cables into storage ready for deployment. Within the Netherlands hydrogen strategy the results from seven energy scenarios conducted by Berenschot, an independent Dutch consultancy firm are included. These results indicate at least 30% rising to 50% of Dutch energy consumption will be supplied via greener gasses by 2050. As of April 2021 the Netherlands allocated 338 million euros towards green hydrogen projects. This financial assistance is part of a 20 billion euros fund provided by the Dutch government to strengthen its post-Covid economy. The financial package aims to stimulate green hydrogen production and to further diversify hydrogen’s versatility. Distribution of funding will be over 5 years. Modifying infrastructure is an area the Dutch government is keen to accelerate progress. This is seen in the announcement of an additional 3.7 billion euros meant for infrastructural spending and a number of research projects. (Reuters April, 2021.)

Accumulation of positive data, release of funds, and German interest has encouraged the Netherlands government to commit towards hydrogen in becoming a sustainable and affordable national fuel source. In the current political and financial climate Germany is the lead European nation whilst the Netherlands maintains Europe’s largest and most active port. Each country is adapting infrastructure, constructing distribution hubs and introducing incentivised legislation favouring hydrogen manufactures; Germany and the Netherlands appear to have embraced hydrogen’s potential. Any significant movement into hydrogen manufacturing by influential European countries and institutions that perform a global role in financial logistics could be regarded as a potential precursor to similar UK governmental announcements. Roann Limited appointed as lead worktop supplier for £130 million residential scheme Wakefield-based granite and quartz worktop supplier, Roann Limited, has been appointed by Vinci Construction as the lead worktop contractor for residential scheme, New Victoria, in Manchester.

The £130 million project, delivered by Muse Developments, comprises 520 apartments, with 178 one-bed, 286 twobed and 56 three-bed properties, as well as a 6,000 sq. ft commercial space. Roann Limited is supplying Silestone Blanco Norte 20mm for all kitchen worktops, upstands and splash backs, and Reginox Ohio 40x40 sinks in Atlantic Grey powder coated finish, to the entire 450,000 sq. ft residential component. Scheduled for completion in 2024, Roann Limited will begin installing a sample apartment in early September, before full site works begin in November 2021. Schüco announces winners of Excellence Awards 2021 Schüco is delighted to announce the winners of its prestigious Excellence Awards following a celebratory lunch hosted by architect and television presenter, Charlie Luxton, in the grand setting of Whitehall’s Banqueting House. ow in their eighth year, the awards, run in association with Architecture Today, are well established and recognise outstanding projects completed throughout the UK and Ireland. They celebrate the collaboration between architects and specialist contractors, bringing clients’ visions to life.

Awards were presented in ten categories, including residential, commercial, cultural, and education and healthcare projects – considering both newbuilds and refurbishments. The judges were looking for an outstanding balance between stunning aesthetics and practical functionality to create a harmonious project. One Overall Winner is acknowledged each year, and this year the accolade went to St. George’s Bristol, designed by architects, Patel Taylor, and specialist contractor, Enhanced Glazing Systems. Patel Taylor’s considered design extends the functional spaces of the concert hall, mediating between the old and the new. A glazed link connecting the two buildings acts as a powerful transition space, light and open to the sky.

Hazel Joseph, Director of AHMM and one of the award judges, said: “The reason St. George’s Bristol stood out to me is that the project had a very dramatic creation of spaces. The architect ensured a careful curation of light and how light found the internal spaces. Also, the sensitivity of how it works within a historic environment is very clever – it is a worthy winner.” Last year’s online edition of the Schüco Excellence Awards saw the introduction of a Viewers’ Choice category. This year it returned in the form of the People’s Choice award voted for by attendees on the day. The project selected was 22 Handyside Street, a three-storey, mixed-use development in London’s King’s Cross by Coffey Architects and Stride Treglown with specialist contractor, Fleetwood Architectural Aluminium. Local Heroes partners with celebrated children’s author to release book encouraging girls to consider tradesperson roles The book launches following research revealing that nearly half of primary school children still believe being a tradesperson* is a “job for men” for boys and over a quarter (28%) said the same for science and ICT. On the other hand, languages (25%), music (31%) and English were (20%) were signposted as subjects specifically for girls. With these gender stereotypes around STEM subjects starting from as young as 6, if not younger, it’s no surprise that only 13% of primary school girls aged selected ‘trade roles’* when asked what they wanted to be when they were older. This figure compares starkly when their male counterparts were asked the same question, with a staggering 43% selecting the same roles.

ocal Heroes, an online platform matching customers with trusted local tradespeople and part of the British Gas family, has today announced the launch of a new children’s book, My Mum The Handyman, penned to encourage more young girls to consider a future career in the trade industry, which includes roles such as electricians, decorators, plumbers, and gas engineers. The illustrated book, which has been written by award-winning children’s author, Ros Asquith, launches following research** revealing nearly half of primary school children (44%) believe that working as a tradesperson is a “job for men”, despite the number of women working in trade roles having increased by 120% over the last decade[1].

Stereotypes Starting at School In the study of 1,000 British primary school children aged 6-11 commissioned by Local Heroes, when asked whether they thought there were specific subjects for boy or girls at school, a fifth (20%) of the children answered “yes”. Digging deeper, a fifth of those respondents (20%) agreed that maths was a subject specifically

Changing perceptions Despite a significant increase in the number of women working in trade roles over recent years, the perception of what a tradesperson looks like is still stuck in the past; when the surveyed children were asked to draw a builder, only 7% stated they would draw a female. Less than half of primary school children think women can be an electrician (48%), plumber (47%) and builder (44%), however over 8 in 10 children (82%) think that men can do these jobs. One in seven (14%) of the children went as far as to say that they don’t think a woman can work as a tradesperson, because ‘they aren’t strong enough’ or ‘it’s too dirty’. And, although almost half of primary school children view tradespeople roles as “jobs for men”, 44% believe their mum knows just as much as their dad when it comes to DIY. Local Heroes is stepping in to change young people’s perceptions around STEM roles including roles in the trade industry. My Mum The Handyman is a touching and modern tale focusing on a young boy whose mother is an electrician, and aims to bring to life the true trade industry landscape. Local Heroes wants the book to be accessible to all and is encouraging parents and

teachers to download the book from the website for free here. The book will also be printed and distributed to Local Heroes customers across the country over the coming months. Susan Wells, Head of Local Heroes comments, “Although we are seeing more and more women working as tradespeople, it’s still widely considered a man’s job. These stereotypes start from such a young age, which is something we want to change. Our latest research shows that primary school girls aren’t considering that they might want to be a tradesperson, compared to their male counterparts. I am a mother to both a son and a daughter – I want my daughter to grow up knowing she can be anything she wants to be, and there should be no limits to her dreams just because she’s a girl. We hope My Mum The Handyman will help young girls to see what an exciting and diverse role being a tradesperson could be, and inspire a new generation of female tradespeople.” Ros Asquith, children’s illustrator and author comments, “This project was an important one for me – there are so many young people out there who aren’t considering roles just because they don’t think it’s something they can do, or that it’s not something for them as they haven’t seen anyone ‘like them’ doing it. I want to help change that, and that starts with the next generation – young children.” Despite there being around 33,000 female tradespeople in 2019, a 120 per cent increase on the 15,000 reported in 2009[2], the stereotype that this is a man’s industry remains. The release of My Mum The Handyman in collaboration with Ros Asquith, is Local Heroes’ latest effort to recruit more women into the industry. West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero production, Inverness One OSB product may seem much like any other. In reality it is worth checking before specifying, especially if you want to score eco points. When it comes to being green, West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero stands out. Not only is SterlingOSB Zero the only UK-manufactured OSB with zero-added formaldehyde, but it is also net carbon negative. SB, or Oriented Strand Board to give it its full name, has become ubiquitous and is often used as a substitute for chipboard and plywood in applications such as flooring, roofing and timber framing. There is good reason for this. OSB is versatile, easy to use and with high consistency and board strength has no weak spots. SterlingOSB Zero or ‘Sterling Board’, as it is often known, is one of Europe’s most widely used and trusted structural panels.

In simple terms, OSB is formed of flakes or strands of timber bonded with resin adhesives in some 50 cross-directional layers. These are then mechanically pressed to create a structurally engineered board. Resins used to bind the flakes of SterlingOSB Zero contain zero-added formaldehyde. With less resin and more wood, the boards are more environmentally friendly and safer while performance is unimpaired. The other important way that West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero can help specifiers and builders towards their environmental targets is that the boards do not contribute to climate change; they are certified carbon negative. In-depth life-cycle assessment of carbon emissions in buildings is increasingly resulting in the building sector being advised to design and build with wood.

As wood naturally absorbs carbon as part of its natural life cycle, it is an ideal replacement for other materials with high levels of embodied carbon such as concrete and steel. The UK government has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2050. This target will require the UK to bring all greenhouse gas emissions down to net zero. SterlingOSB Zero products can help the construction industry comply; the net carbon negative status of the boards can be used by building designers to off-set the operational emissions of a building. Every SterlingOSB Zero board removes more carbon from the atmosphere than is emitted during manufacture, locking it up into long term storage within the board. Magply A1 Boards selected for fit out of London apartments One of the UK’s premier housebuilders has switched to specifying Magply boards as part of the wall construction, within the exterior elevations for an apartment development in a prime West London location, chosen in place of the plywood alternative because of the MgO boards’ outstanding physical characteristics and other practical benefits. oyal Warwick Square is a development by St. Edward – a joint venture company owned by M&G Investments and Berkeley. The scheme is part of the Warwick Road Masterplan that is providing a thousand new residences, a new school and landscaped spaces across seven acres of Zone 1 land in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

With work near to completion, Watford based PIB Contractors has been installing the Magply boards, supplied through MP Moran of Watford as ‘pattresses’ or backing blocks for fixings, within the light gauge steel wall panels. The pattresses are sized and positioned in line with a

pre-designed layout: facilitating the hanging of fixtures and fittings like shelves, radiators and kitchen units. St. Edward is amongst a growing number of sector specialists turning to IPP Ltd. and its Magply range where high performance panel products are required to meet specific technical challenges. In the case of Royal Warwick Square, a member of the project team contacted IPP Ltd. during the early design stages, leading to the Sales Manager for Magply delivering a full technical briefing on the versatile product, which has found many similar applications, particularly in Ireland and on student accommodation buildings across the UK.

The Operations Director for PIB, Danny White, commented: “What you see on the Royal Warwick Square site is the use of 20mm Magply in lieu of a timber – plywood – pattress as this has a very good pull-out capacity similar to the properties of plywood and is non-combustible.” Backed by BDA Agreement certification, Magply MgO boards present a firesafe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products. Additionally, the unique production process keeps the chloride content to just 0.01%, enhancing both stability and long-term durability. The different thicknesses of panel are also widely used as a substrate board for the direct application of proprietary render systems, as well as for flooring and flat or pitched roof build-ups.

hillipa (Pip) was a chef in the navy, but her career was cut short by the onset of a rare genetic condition, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. For years, Pip dedicated herself to helping others, from running soup kitchens and helping disadvantaged children, to supporting causes for disabled people.

Pip wanted a garden that she could access easily and freely allowing her to be able to take her son Harrison outside independently whilst being assured they are both safe and secure in their own garden. Being a former chef she is also very keen to show Harrison how to grow food, fruit and vegetables. Understanding how important the garden paving was to Pip and her family, the presenter of the popular show, Alan Titmarsh and the team decided to create a fully accessible navy coastal theme garden. As a result, the Love Your Garden experts got super-creative and by using some clever design with interesting features and details to suit the whole family.

How the design plans came together

Resin Pathway for ITV’s Love Your Garden in Middlesbrough Recently shown on the popular ITV programme ‘Love Your Garden’, was a garden make over in Middlesbrough, home to Phillipa, Husband John and their two-year-old boy Harrison. •10•

SureSet was contacted by the TV producers in early last year after working with us previously they knew resin bound paving was essential to complete the accessible pathways around the residential garden, with a particular interest in various colour blends from our Natural Aggregate range. We sent samples of colours that would suit the design to match the colour scheme and be feasible for the particular project requirements. As manufacturers, SureSet were able to show our support in donating our time, labour, plant and resin. Our operations team were on hand to provide advice and guidance for the based needed and edging options.

The completed paving solution For the main pathway, the base used for the SureSet resin system was a well compacted crushed stone, this was ideal for the amount of foot traffic expected for this garden pathway area. SureSet used a clear resin to combine the chosen 6mm Natural Aggregate blend Winter Pearl from our natural range of colours. The required 15m² of stone and resin was mixed on site in a forced action Baron mixer, levelled at a 30mm depth using a handy spazzle and compressed by a hand float both supplied by The Resin Bull. There was 6m² of loose stone needed for a soakaway area located down the side of the garage where an imaginative dinosaur play table was created for their son Harrison. Alan and his team wanted to use the same Natural Aggregate stone to match the resin bound accessible path but keeping to a loose aggregate for this particular area provides a comfortable

space to kneel on when playing whilst also resembling the pebble beaches that surround a Jurassic coast. The pathway colour and texture is very well suited to the surrounding coastal themed timber and rocks but also creates a bold contrast against the dark green fences, shrubs, and the beautiful mural that is hung in the corner of the garden behind the den and brings all the colours of the garden together. Mastic Asphalt Successfully Tested to New European Fire Standard ith the fire rating of waterproofing systems under increasing scrutiny since the Grenfell fire disaster, it is becoming increasingly important for specifiers and building owners to consider the fire classification of waterproofing systems.

The Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) has recently tested its Recreation Duty (RD) Grade Mastic Asphalt system incorporating glass fibre tissue underlay to the European fire classification standard EN 13501-1. EnviroBuild publish environmental impact of its composite products EnviroBuild has made history, becoming the first company in the UK to publish the environmental impact of its composite products with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). raditionally EPDs use an internationally standardised method to determine the impact of a product over its lifetime. Completing the report will allow EnviroBuild to identify and mitigate their contribution to climate change and increase their sustainability. EnviroBuild freely chose to make their EPD public in order to increase their transparency and to hold themselves accountable to their sustainable commitments.

The team at EnviroBuild have looked at their environmental impact at every stage of the design and development process including manufacturing, shipping, disposal and treatment. This is particularly significant as many manufacturers only consider their manufacturing processes when creating an EPD, whereas EnviroBuild has analysed its business from end-to-end, including its transportation, use and disposal stages. Buster Palmano, Technical Director at EnviroBuild, said: “The impact on the environment also covers more than just greenhouse gas emissions (global warming potential), we’ve also looked into things like ozone depletion, the environmental effect on bodies of water, the creation of any harmful substances and water consumption.” The report revealed that the Net CO₂ works out at +1.53 kg per kg of composite, when looking at every stage of the product lifecycle, including the company’s move to 100% renewable energy in 2021. The data shows that the company is currently outputting more CO₂ than they are removing from the atmosphere. The disposal stage is the largest contributor to this output as the product releases carbon as it biodegrades.

In comparison, the data reveals that the raw material processing stage absorbs more CO₂ than it releases. This is most likely due to the fact the construction process of the composite products involves using waste wood which absorbs CO₂ during its growth. The majority of the other raw materials used are recycled plastic, which have very little impact. The manufacturing stage of the EPD report has a small CO₂ output, which is largely due to the company moving to wind energy. By doing this, they were able to reduce the total carbon impact by over 30%! The ultimate goal of Envirobuild is to not only offset their environmental impact but reduce it entirely. In order to address the findings of the EPD and increase their sustainability, Envirobuild are starting multiple initiatives. Palmano said: “We are removing plastic packaging from smaller items such as screws and we are looking to improve the sustainability of our non-combustible flooring solutions, including porcelain paving and aluminium decking (ProGrip and Aquachannel).” The company is also looking to move the majority of its additional ranges to wind power. When purchasing renewable energy, the company will buy it in the country of production where they are using the energy. This is to ensure that they aren’t, for example, polluting one country and then balancing that pollution by planting trees in the UK. In order to address their biggest CO₂ output, Envirobuild will be encouraging builders’ merchants and customers to reuse old decking at its end of life rather than sending it to landfill. EnviroBuild is continually measuring and analysing the environmental impact of all of its products through LCAs and publishing EPDs, and using the results to objectively find the most effective way to reduce their environmental impact as much as possible. DURAPOST® FEATURES ON ITV’S LOVE YOUR GARDEN The innovative, galvanised steel fence post system, DuraPost® By Birkdale has recently featured on ITV’s Love your Garden as part of a much-needed renovation. he episode aired on Tuesday 14th of September and the DuraPost® system was one of the building materials chosen to drastically improve the aesthetics and longevity of a family garden in Middlesbrough.

The renovation was undertaken to improve the outside space belonging to Phillipa or ‘Pip’, her husband John and two-year-old son Harrison. Pip was employed as a chef in the navy, but her career was cut short by the onset of a rare genetic condition, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. She has since dedicated herself to others, from running soup kitchens, helping disadvantaged children, to supporting causes for disabled people. Pip desired a garden that she could access easily and safely in her wheelchair to take Harrison outside. Previously the space was bordered by 35m of dilapidated fencing in dire need of replacing. The Love Your Garden team selected DuraPost® and trained DuraPost® installer David Massey, of

Massey Garden Design, fitted the system in Anthracite Grey. This was completed along with matching DuraPost® gravel boards, capping rails, post caps and cover strips to complement the overall garden design. As well as having a modern and stylish fence solution, Pip and her family will also benefit from DuraPost®’s durability. Concrete seals the deal for architects and designers Concrete is all the rage in interiors at the moment and architects and designers are embracing a material that has been around since ancient times but is now back in fashion.

Trends in interior design constantly change and it can be hard to keep up with what is the latest style, product or material that is currently on-trend. Interior designers and architects like to try new things, and one shift that is particularly noticeable, is the transition of concrete from a ‘hard’ building material used in all types of construction, to its current position as a contemporary and stylish finish for interior design elements such as flooring, furniture and surfaces. Concrete in various forms has been around for centuries. However, it is only in the last few years that it has made this transition to an interiors product. It has an industrial heritage which makes it extremely durable, a quality that translates well to an interior environment. The benefits of concrete furniture go far beyond its strength and durability. The potential designs of concrete furniture can range from the very simple to ornate with each piece custom created to complement the surrounding decor.

Typical concrete pieces might be dining, coffee and side tables, kitchen worktops and even lighting fixtures. Its simple style and colour also make it a great contrast feature for monochrome interior features and is an ideal material to create an ‘industrial’ design aesthetic. It pairs extremely well with other materials and the unusual texture can really make an impact in any interior scheme. Like many materials, concrete needs care and attention to maintain the qualities that make it an appealing product in the first place. Each concrete piece is usually uniquely designed to suit the application and to keep it in tip-top condition, it is important to look after it properly. A good way to treat interior concrete products is to use a good clear, satin impregnation oil. This type of oil uniquely combines the advantages of natural oils and waxes in one product. Importantly it will not form a film on the surface – particularly important with concrete - instead it penetrates the surface. Through this impregnation, the microporous surface (as concrete has) becomes water and dirt repellent as well as stain resistant. This action makes the oil especially suited to concrete wall panelling and flooring in kitchens and bathrooms as well as for tabletops, windows sills and kitchen worktops.

When undertaking maintenance with oil it is important to apply it very thinly and spread it well across the area. Any excess product (i.e. pooling or streaks) should be removed with a pad or a lint-free cloth. For larger areas, remove excess oil with a rubberscraper and polish with a buffing machine (whitepad). The oil must be absorbed into the surface. There must not be any oil left on the surface. The oil needs 8-10 hours to dry and the area should be well ventilated for best results. When ready, apply the second coat also very thinly and again, remove any excess. When renovating already oiled surface, normally one coat on a cleaned surface is perfectly sufficient. Concrete is also a sustainable material. This is a major plus for many architects and interior designers working in today’s environmentally conscious marketplace, where sustainable sourcing is key. Should it be necessary, concrete pieces can be recycled at the end of their life. That said, with proper care and attention concrete products can last for centuries. Although it’s unlikely anyone has such grand ambitions for today’s interior pieces, it is reassuring for architects and designers to know there are products available that can maintain, preserve and enhance the concrete features they create today.

Preventing the Spread of Fire in Basements As Winston Churchill famously quoted “It is always wise to look ahead, but difficult to look further than you can see”. hilst it would be wonderful to have future insight into the world of architecture, basement design and construction, it’s just not a possibility. However, this shouldn’t detract from the industry, looking further than they can see.

Fire safety has always been developed and innovated in the face of tragedy. Some of the first fire safety legislations in this country were brought about by byelaws in the wake tragedy and throughout history the industry has continued to retroactively fix issues that have arisen post event.

Every year there are many fires on construction sites and in buildings undergoing refurbishment; people are injured or killed, property is destroyed, including irreplaceable heritage buildings and the industry suffers disruption and unexpected costs from which many never recover. Stopping fires on construction sites and in buildings, is nigh on impossible, however mitigating injury or death is a possibility and a design approach which should be incorporated into every project. Waterloo Strengthen Product Offering with Displacement Waterloo have strengthened their product offering by replacing their displacement range with the full portfolio of Swegon displacement products. By integrating a range of airborne products from the Swegon group, the supplier of air terminal devices can deliver the widest range of room unit products in the UK market. as consideration for cooling the whole space is not required.

The new range of displacement terminals are made to effectively discharge air at low velocity to ensure good comfort in rooms. In large spaces such as airports, theatres, factory floors, open offices, and supermarkets where a traditional mixed system can fall short; using a displacement system can have significant advantages on indoor air quality and efficiency. Rooms with high ceilings can benefit from substantial energy savings by installing the displacement terminals with Varizon®, as only the occupied zone needs to be cooled from the low level of displacement installation. Added to the lower pressure drop associated with displacement ventilation terminals, selection of smaller and slower fans is possible for a reduction in fan energy. The supply air temperature is higher for displacement systems (circa 18°C) than for an overhead mixing system (circa 14°C), meaning there is greater access to free cooling throughout the year, thus improving chiller efficiency. In general, the higher the space, the greater the payback,

THE 15-MINUTE CITY APPROACH TO POSTPANDEMIC HOUSE BUILDING The next big challenge facing the building industry will be meeting the demands of the public for homes that fit in to post-pandemic living with greater homeworking and emphasis on lifestyle rather than location, it is claimed. an Grimshaw from Beam Development says the ‘15-Minute City’ principal – a new approach to urban design, in which all city residents can meet most of their needs within a short walk or bicycle ride from their homes – could offer a solution.

“It is possible cities will never return to the way they were before the virus struck and we are now looking at the way buildings are being used in terms of amenities and spaces and examining what people want from the places they live in,” said Dan. “Even before Covid people were wanting to spend more time at home as technology allowed them to do that, but that has been normalised during lockdown and accelerated, hence the need for proper home office space to accommodate that. “If the 15-Minute City takes off as a concept it will chime with people looking for more flexibility in their lives and who want to fit their jobs around their home life with space to work from home and, if possible, the space for a home office. “Creating that space, either through an extension or re-purposing rooms is vital.” Dan says building design is already starting to change with projects such as the Brabazon development being built at the former BAE airfield at Filton, near Bristol, already adopting the new readymade community model. “One of the positives of the pandemic is it has made people feel more connected with their neighbourhoods and highlighted the need for a diverse range of local businesses and services, with better street space for pedestrians,” added Dan.

These days, the word “sustainability” seems to crop up everywhere. Whether that’s in news reports, magazine articles, advertising campaigns or emblazoned on the side of lorries. But is it just another business buzzword, or are we genuinely making a shift in the way we think and act, in order to protect and preserve the world we live in for future generations? hile “Green Issues” like recycling and sustainability were on the fringe 20 years ago, these days they’re right at the heart of business with sustainability having a huge influence on every aspect of industry, especially at Eurocell.

PVC-U is a highly sustainable product, robust enough to be recycled and repurposed up to 10 times without its quality or performance deteriorating, giving it a lifespan in the construction industry of 350 years. At our recycling plants, we process up to 70,000 old PVC-U window frames per week, or around 39,000 tonnes per year. Once recycled, it is used to create a variety of new products, from thermal inserts to our revolutionary Modus window system. By doing this we are able to reuse almost 100% of our production waste.

2021 Targets Despite 2020 resulting in a number of challenges - Eurocell Recycle still managed to recycle an impressive number of PVC-U frames. Like most businesses, Eurocell Recycle closed it’s doors for a few months in 2020 to keep it’s staff and customers safe, and put in Covid-secure work processes. This being said, for the last 5 consecutive years, (2020 excluded) Eurocell Recycle has managed to beat it’s previous years total recycling number and we plan to make 2021 the biggest year yet, with a target of a record-breaking 3.5 million frames recycled.

The recycling process makes PVC-U stronger Products manufactured from recycled PVC-U are actually stronger than those made with virgin plastic because of the chemical transformation of the polymers it contains when it goes through the recycling process. At our consolidated operations in Ilkeston and Selby, Eurocell Recycle now offers the largest and most complete closed-loop process in the UK for collecting and processing used PVC-U frames to be re-extruded and turned into new windows, doors and building products.

ISO CHEMIE’S WINFRAMER SPECIFIED FOR MODULAR HOUSE BUILDER ISO Chemie’s thermal insulating and load bearing bracket support system has been specified for a ground breaking modular house design that could impact on the new homes market and environment he development sees WINFRAMER units along with WIN2WALL multi-level sealing tape, being supplied to North East-based CoreHaus for installation in its modular properties. The company has a five-year plan to produce around 1,000 precision engineered units a year built using modern methods of construction (MMC) to deliver long term energy cost savings.

Passivhaus certified and fire rated to up to 30 minutes, WINFRAMER is a prefabricated installation frame, manufactured to accommodate cavities up to 250mm that allows windows to be supported independently from the face of the wall regardless of any external cladding being in place. Quick and easy-to-install, the product’s application on CoreHaus properties comes as the modular housing sector has been given a boost by national housing agency Homes England, which is accelerating the delivery of local authority housing schemes, encouraging greater use of MMC.

Among the key advantages of WIN2WALL are not only its thermal performance, but it is also weather tight to 600 Pa (Violent Storm Force 11) and has excellent acoustic insulation properties. Installing a window or door using WIN2WALL will give the window an equivalent or better thermal property than the window unit itself. Even the smaller 40mm size tape will give the joint between the window and wall a U-Value of 1.2, equivalent to an Energy A-rated window.
