The interior design commu nity continues to seek out the latest innovations for the contemporary home and lifestyle, where demand for conven ient luxury in the kitchen that is safe and climate friendly, continues to rise. By thinking more about the sustainable benefits some products have, architects and designers are now specifying evergreen solutions to further satisfy their clients, saving them time, money and energy.

STEAMING - All products in the Pronteau HotKey® range offer 4 functions: 75-98° instant filtered steaming hot water, refreshing filtered cold water and everyday hot and cold water. Why 98°C hot? During development, Abode considered every aspect of safety, both for the dispensing of steaming hot water and the maximum temperature for stored water in the boiler. By dispensing steaming hot water from 75°C to a maximum 98°C, Pronteau steaming hot water taps are fully compliant with Part G(3) of the UK Building Regulations. Plus, all Pronteau steaming hot water taps are insulated which means the water is hot at the end of the spout, but the outside surface remains cool to the touch.

•4•

The stand-out trend in the premium kitchen market continues to hero high performance product designs such as the 4-in-1 hot water tap which facilitates hot, cold, boiling, and filtered water from one source. Dubbed the ‘fastest growing kitchen appliance’ in the UK right now, our customers are reporting to include at least one in almost every kitchen they design to meet demand and so we have expanded our Pronteau range of steaming hot taps to include our latest series, Pronteau HotKey® that debuts the new PROBOIL.4E ultra-compact boiler and is controlled by our patented HotKey® sensor technology for optimum safety.

STYLISH - The new range of Pronteau HotKey® taps offer an array of stylish, contemporary designs including swan and quad spout monoblocs in a selection of on-trend finishes, and unique 3-part designs. Opting for a 4 IN 1 hot water tap in a 3-part design will add the optimum level of luxury in any style of kitchen. There are 5 beautiful finishes available across the range including Chrome, Brushed Nickel, Matt Black, Antique Brass and Brushed Brass.

We are big believers in supporting excellence in kitchen design, which is why we have an expert team of Pronteau specialists, as well as a Pronteau Install Fleet, Technical Support hotlines and dedicated website www.pronteau.co.uk , so your project is supported at every stage of the process. NEW & EXCLUSIVE - The PROBOIL.4E boiler has been designed exclusively for the new Pronteau 4 IN 1 HotKey® range by Abode. Packed with a series of features, this new boiler includes our biggest capacity yet at 4L, delivering up to 100 cups per hour! Its ultra-compact size is also a huge advantage for designers, able to fit within a standard Belfast or Butler sink base unit for the height of convenience. Other new additions include a practical filter life indi cator display for easy maintenance, colour coded push fit connectors for a quick, toolless install and intuitive digital display with precise temperature control. All Pronteau HotKey® systems are supplied with our premium water optimisation filter to give you the best protection, flexibility and increased capacity. Offering a capacity of 1500L and a bypass function, users can set the filter to match the hardness of your water to ensure optimum perfor mance and longevity. This filter offers supreme water filtration and scale control and is part of the free of charge Abode filter recycle scheme, to provide a no cost and straight-forward solution for both the property market and environment.

SAFE - The patented Pronteau HotKey® technology could just be the safest way to dispense steaming hot water. Without the HotKey® the steaming hot water cannot be activated, hide it away or up high from little ones and the tap will only perform as a 3-way mixer tap. As well as this safety benefit, this tap is also great for anyone with dexterity difficulties or conditions such as arthritis, so users can avoid pushing down, turning and sliding the handle in order to trigger the water flow. The discreet HotKey® fob can be hidden out of children’s reach, placed high up on a magnetic surface like an extractor or fridgefreezer, or on the back of the tap for optimum safety. Hidden inside the tap body, a proximity sensor detects when the HotKey® is nearby, activating the boiler to pump steaming hot water through a separate central channel to the spout and without it, the tap becomes an ordinary 3-way mixer.

Nick Wheatley, the owner said: “customers not only want a great price, but they also want good, unbiased advice, and therefore the ability to offer exceptional customer service is key.” He went on to say: “you should always be honest to your customers to ensure their expectations are met.”

Having been in the industry since 1985, Nick Wheatley, the owner, worked for several independent merchants before founding his own business ‘UK Plumbing Supplies’ in 2005. He retired in 2018 but was encouraged by previous customers to return. He explained what was key to bringing him back to the industry: “The people – our customers. It’s a privilege and a pleasure to serve the local community. We care about our customers, and we enjoy being able to meet their needs and help them to solve any problems.”

Graham Bustin was Branch Manager at Oxford Plumbing Supplies (part of UK Plumbing Supplies) when he met Nick and has a lot of management experience in the industry. Graham jumped at the opportunity to join Nick as a director and shareholder at County Plumbing Supplies, as he shares his sentiments when it comes to a customerfirst mindset. Graham said: “Every time a business makes a decision, it should think about how such a decision might affect its customers. Putting your customer first is not a one-off action. It’s imperative that your whole team is knowledgeable and has the right information to hand, it’s the whole attitude of a business that fosters a positive customer experience.”

Open to the trade and public, this new store has a strong product offering - stocking the best brands at great prices. What’s more, the team at County Plumbing Supplies has over 115 years of industry expertise between the four of them.

A large bathroom showroom is being built in phase 2 of the store build.

Routes to market have changed over the years - with the introduction of digital channels, and Nick and his team understand the need to engage with websites and social media, especially amongst their younger customers who prefer to communicate this way.

Glenn Fisher, The IPG’s Managing Director said: “We are committed to encouraging communities to support their local IPG member store, where alongside unrivalled service and unbiased honest advice, a customer is likely to find that their shopping basket is cheaper.”

The IPG is a membership group that commits to providing business and marketing support to local independent plumbing and heating stores and bathroom showrooms. It has the expertise to support Nick’s team with not only their purchasing power, but all digital aspects including a website, social media content, and an in-store digital screen.

County Plumbing supplies are a member of The IPG and proudly promotes this fact on their new signage.

A HELPING HAND FROM NATURE TO BECOME CARBON NEGATIVE

Keller Kitchens and parent group, DKG, are delighted to report that the ambition to be carbon negative during 2022 is well on track to becoming reality.  In addition to the numerous steps, measures and investments the business has taken to attain “manufacturer” carbon neutral status back in April 2017, more recent initiatives required the help of nature itself. Just over a year ago, Keller/DKG joined forces with farmers organisation ZLTO and two local carbon farmers within a radius of 15 kilometres around the Bergen op Zoom factory in Holland. The pro cess involved is based on the long-term capture of CO2 from the atmosphere that is then processed naturally and stored into farm land soil. The plants and crops then convert the CO2 into carbon chains via photosyn thesis. The organic matter that is built up in this way also promotes soil fertility and crop growth increases.

•9•

For further information, please visit www.kellerkitchens.com

One year on, Keller/DKG are delighted to announce the initiative is working extremely well and the CO2 is binding into the soil better than expected. In addition, there are further benefits which include - biodiversity, which is increasing, and agriculture is also proving to be more resilient to climate extremes. Averages over the next four years are expected to reach CO2 sequestration to a level of 292.4 tCO2/ha. This will allow nature to do the rest.

Keller is well known for offering the widest range of colours (1950 NCS) and finishes in the kitchen furni ture market and is proud to have been a carbon neu tral kitchen manufacturer since 2017.

National Sales Manager UK, Tim Spann commented, “The results are very, very encouraging giving us the con fidence we are on the right track to maintain our indus try-leading position for manufacturing kitchens by the most sustainable means possible. I am extremely proud to be part of an organisation that has such a strong ethos and is happy to make the investments required to set industry standards. To give an example that sets some perspective here; over a five-year period no less than 150 tonnes of carbon will be removed from the atmosphere. That is the equivalent to the carbon output of 390 flights from Amsterdam to Rome! Keller was the first kitchen manufacturer to become carbon neutral and we will be first to become carbon negative - with a little help from nature itself. Organising CO2 reduction locally offers more immediate and accountable methods than financ ing the planting of trees on the other side of the world alone - giving immediate and visible results locally for the environment.”

Additionally, each PlantBox trough has a 1.8 litre water reservoir and capillary felt that allows plants to draw up the water they need. The cascading overflow system allows the walls to be watered easily and avoids the risk of overwatering and water wastage.

From conversations with residential landscapers and interior designers, we’re unsurprised that this brief isn’t too dissimilar to what private clients are also hoping to achieve at home.

Canary Wharf, London’s central business district, has traded its corporate exterior for a greener look, transforming its neutral walls with over 12,000 plants in an expansive living wall display. Living walls are growing in popularity as sustain able lifestyles penetrate design and landscaping briefs. The district’s living wall makeover was delivered using 3,000 Plant Boxes (a clever and versatile living wall product) to create a pleasant and relaxing space, countering the usual rush of city life. On a smaller scale, homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to achieve the same serenity at home by better connecting with nature. Interior and landscape designers are often using living walls to achieve this for their clients, leaning on vertical struc tures to introduce more greenery to the home, without eating into valuable floorspace, or requiring an extensive garden.

The brief was to allow the space to better work with nature, as one of the area’s many steps to becoming a more sustainable part of the city.

The PlantBox system is a product we’ve recommended for large projects such as that in Canary Wharf and for DIY home renovations.”

Growing Revolution is one of the UK’s leading living wall suppliers.

Growing Revolution, creator and manufacturer of the PlantBox living wall system, says that Canary Wharf’s new look is one that is easily achieved in residential homes and gardens too. Matt Lindsay, General Manager at Growing Revolution, said: “One of our landscaping part ners, Biotecture, used the PlantBox system to bring Canary Wharf to life.

With its innovative PlantBox product, it is helping more people access green space. Made from 100% recycled materials and with a cascading watering system that simplifies plant care, its product was a 2021 RHS Chelsea Sustainable Garden Product of the Year finalist.

Powdertech Sandstorm finish featured at Perry Barr Station, Birmingham

“We can now say that Powdertech Corby put in an appearance of sorts, at the highly successful Commonwealth Games 2022” said Richard Besant, Director, Powdertech. Update of the station buildings themselves followed the popular trend for the appearance of rusted metal, providing a contemporary industrial look. “Powdertech’s Sandstorm finish complemented the main building perfectly,” said Richard Besant. “The finish has high durability and colour stability. Providing a very natural appearance of rust with subtle variation in tone, the overall effect is a pleasing consistency of shade. Cleaning and maintenance will be very straightforward, requiring just a 6-monthly wash with water.”

Perry Bar railway station became a key visitor destination, situated close to Alexander Stadium, home of the opening and closing ceremony as well as athletics events.

Client: Galliford Try, RAAFT. Architect: Glancy Nicholls

Powdertech Corby used its Evolution Sandstorm finish to powder coat the sides of a large planter outside Perry Barr railway station, Birmingham. Re-development of the railway station was part of a £30.9 million project which also included the bus interchange The entire project was finished on time, and within budget, ready for the Commonwealth Games 2022 hosted by Birmingham.

Powdertech coated over 100 mild steel panels and post-brackets some weighing over 100kg which were joined together internally to form the large planter.

REDUCING ANDCONSTRUCTIONEMISSIONSCARBONINBUILDING

Initially approved in principle by Westminster Council and the GLA, the plans were then put on hold by Communities Secretary Michael Gove following a report published into the potential carbon footprint of bulldozing the building. This revealed the scheme carried an embodied carbon cost of almost 40,000 tonnes - the equivalent of driving a typical car 99,000,000 miles, further than the distance to the Sun. The report’s author Simon Sturgis called the plan “absolutely crazy”, believing a better idea would be to refit and renovate the existing shop. In June Mr Gove decide to ‘call-in’ the application for scrutiny by a public inquiry and for him to take the decision himself.

As it stands it is estimated that 39% of all global energy related carbon emissions comes from the built environment with 28% coming from operational emissions (i.e. heating, cooling and power) and the other 11% from embodied carbon emissions (from the construction of the building).

Where refitting is not possible, Parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee has recom mended more effective use of low-carbon building materials, including recycled steel and timber or using second-hand materials such as brick, metal, wood and even broken concrete.

The Government’s net zero targets and the policies to achieve them mean that changes will inevitably be forced on those who operate in the development sector. As is so common with planning, it’s an evolving picture.

As the population of the world quickly approaches 10 billion, the global building stock is expected to double in size.

In recent years there has been a focus on producing more efficient buildings that will reduce operational emissions.

•17• industry news

Closer to home, to help meet embodied carbon benchmarks, there is increasing pressure for London’s large scale projects to prioritise retaining existing buildings over demolition. For example, under updated planning guidance published by London Mayor, Sadiq Khan in March 2022, as part of the London Plan: “Retention should be seen as the starting point,” and “Retaining existing built structures for reuse and retrofit, in part or as a whole, should be prioritised before considering substantial demolition, as this is typically the lowest-carbon option.”

But now, we are starting to see a coordinated action to tackle embodied carbon, with the World Green Building Council promoting a bold new vision: by 2030, all new builds, infrastruc ture and renovations will have at least 40% less embodied carbon, and all new buildings should be net zero operational carbon, and by 2050, new buildings, infrastruc ture and renovations will have net zero embodied carbon and all build ings, including existing buildings, must be zero operational carbon.

While there is a degree of polit ical consensus on the issue, this position is perhaps supported more strongly by the Labour Party and that may accelerate the impact on planning applications in London. Having for the first time taken control of Westminster City Council in the May 2022 elections, the new administration is introducing a Net-Zero Test for every major decision, which will assess social, economic and environmental impacts to help make more informed choices and improve outcomes. At the same time, M&S’s plans to demolish and redevelop their flag ship store in Oxford Street have been caught up in the process.

A Sustainable Solution

Choosing the right finish Osmo’s mission is to preserve the natural beauty and durability of wood with only the highest qual ity and environmentally friendly products. Products made from wood; from flooring to furniture, are made from organic matter, so will continue to need nourishment to ensure the product stays in the best possible condition, both aesthetically and structurally.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUSTAINABLE WOOD FINISH

FSC© Certification Osmo supports sustainable forestry and works diligently to ensure that the origin of timbers used can be proven. To help improve, and with our natural resources in mind, Osmo has taken on the high standard of FSC©-cer tification for certain products. In choosing an Osmo product, you can be reassured that the product is not just good for wood, but good for the environment too.

For more information on Osmo and its range of environmentally friendly and sustainable products and finishes, call Osmo UK direct on 01296 481220 or alternatively visit www.osmouk.com.

The foundation of Osmo wood finishes is based upon purified and refined natural resources which are carefully harvested into natural oils and hard waxes. Osmo products contain natural vegetable oils to help nourish the wood and retain flexibility. Depending on the prod uct, they might include: linseed oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil as well as thistle oil. The interior range of hard wax oil products also contains natural plant waxes carnauba wax and candelilla wax, offering wear resistance and repellency. Further more, our extensively cleaned pigments have been approved for use in the food industry.

Our advice is to make use of a high-quality finish, full of natural ingredients to complement the woods properties. This will ensure that the wood continues to breathe and respond well to environmental conditions, removing any possibil ity of cracking or and blistering.

Consumers today are more conscious than ever about the sustainability credentials of the products they buy and use. There is a clear trend for switching to more sustainable and environmentally friendly products. That’s why so many people turn to Osmo when looking for a wood finish, as it’s not only high-quality, durable and easy to maintain, but it is also made from sustainable ingredients.
