London Golf Club has grasped its moment as it returned to the European Tour limelight once again.

aking place just 20 miles from the capital and with 700 acres of magnificent Kent countryside providing the memorable landscapes, it represented the fourth and final chapter of the UK Swing in summer 2021 and was the club’s first chance to stage a European Tour event since the Volvo World Match Play seven years ago.

For a venue which only opened in 1994, it already boasts a rich tournament history, having also hosted the European Open (2008 and 2009) and, more recently, two editions of the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship in 2018 and 2019. There is already a healthy link with golfing royalty thanks to 18-time Major winner Nicklaus, who brought all of his trademark crafty bunker placement and course design skills to the party. But the great and the good of the sport have continued to stroll the same manicured fairways on a regular basis ever since. Indeed, back in July 1994, the opening itself paved the way and set the tone on what was to come.
The stunning 36-hole venue in Ash, which boasts two supreme Jack Nicklaus-designed courses – The Heritage and The International – hosted the Cazoo Classic, formerly known as the English Open, as part of the UK Swing on the European Tour schedule in August.
A Charity Challenge Skins Match on The Heritage saw Nicklaus go up against fellow golf icons Seve Ballesteros and Tony Jacklin, with the popular Spaniard eventually taking the honours on that occasion. There are some big plans for the future too with European Tour, Challenge Tour, women’s events, junior events and disabled events all on the agenda in the coming years. And that focus on the future has become even more important to the European Tour Destination venue in recent times as they also turn their attentions to environmental sustainability. The appointment of energy consultants, GreenClub, is based on the ambition to become carbon neutral in the coming years as they develop environmental strategies to address current and future business needs, while also delivering major events in a sustainable and environmentally-responsible way. Although the Heritage is exclusively for members and their guests, the International course is of equal stature as a challenge to test all aspects of your game.
Just bear in mind that the risk v reward battle is a constant theme for any Nicklaus design and mental strength will also come under close scrutiny.
Much as you may well be left cursing your decisions at various intervals as you realise you’ve fallen into the Golden Bear’s clever trap all over again, there are also plenty of those memorable moments to take away with you if you find yourself on the right side of the risk v reward conundrum.

Cashless is killing tips:
Over a third of Brits won’t tip via card due to lack of confidence it goes to the right person A recent report from UK Finance has revealed the UK is another step closer towards becoming a cashless society as the number of payments made using notes and coins last year declined by more than a third. As more businesses decide to go cashless, this new move towards a fast-tracked cashless society is having devasting effects on the nations tipping habits, according to a new report. The 2021 Tipping Index commissioned by card payment specialist takepayments Limited, surveyed over 2,000 consumers to compare how tipping attitudes and behaviours have changed through the pandemic. The findings reveal that pre-pandemic, cash was the most favoured payment method for tipping (91%) as almost two thirds (64%) of those that tip this way said they felt more confident the tip would go directly to the person who served them.

However as more businesses are no longer accepting cash, the research reveals less Brits are opting to carry cash as almost one in five (18%) said they no longer carry cash which they would usually leave as a tip.

This new cashless movement is impacting tipping habits as one in four (23%) said they would only leave a tip if they had spare cash on them and one in four (24%) said they would specifically bring cash especially to tip. Coronavirus and hygiene fears play a part in people tipping less too, as almost one in six (14%) said they are now less likely to leave cash as a tip due to hygiene or health reasons. While almost three in ten Brits recognise tips are a big part of peoples income, more than a quarter (27%) state that while places no longer accept cash and only accept card payments, tipping isn’t always possible as Brits lack confidence that tips
made by card payments go directly to the person who served them (35%). And for those Brits that do feel confident tipping on card, more than a third (35%) admit they leave a bigger tip when paying cash. Sandra Rowley at takepayments Limited said: “While the sectors which commonly involve tipping can finally re-open, the professions who rely on tips to top up their income are unfortunately continuing to struggle due to the nation’s lack of knowledge around tips and card payments. There is a misconception around card payments and tipping which needs to be highlighted as businesses are able to separate tips from the cost of services when taking card payments. The government is set to announce a new proposal for a Tipping Bill next month which will hopefully give the public more knowledge around workers rights and tips, as well as instil confidence around tipping on card.” The full findings of the takepayments 2021 Tipping Point Report are available to view here.
Ozone Sanitiser to be trialled in a top ten pub to increase confidence and offer indoor protection from COVID-19A Business owners from some of the hardest-hit sectors of the UK economy are working long hours to keep their businesses running. They are highly aware of how their COVID risk reduction strategies impact income. Many hotels, pubs and restaurants have reduced indoor occupancy, and many customers have switched to takeaways until they feel more confident about infection rates, which are now rising again. ‘The Bell Inn’ in Essex hope to be one of the first establishments to be running a trial of an advanced type of Ozone Sanitiser that has been backed by government grants through Innovate UK scheme over the last two years. Carol Anne Vereker at The Bell Inn says “We take the safety of our staff and customers very seriously. BonaCaeli have helped us identify key COVID hotspots around our premises and areas where transmission would be at its highest. “When it came to designing the shower block and bike store, we knew we had to use durable, hardwearing materials,” explains Matt Atkinson, Director at Four Architects. “At the same time, the space needed to be easy to clean, hygienic and low maintenance as well as offering commuters and workers somewhere comfortable, warm and welcoming for them to shower and change after cycling into work then get changed again to cycle home. We really wanted bespoke
basin and shower sizes and it was Cosentino’s cut to size facility that enabled us to achieve this. We really liked the fact the Dekton® is Carbon Neutral and the Kreta and Lunar designs from the Industrial Collection gave us that industrial look that we knew we wanted and was well within budget too.” The whole project took around 12 weeks in total and this included
tiling, laying the Dekton® surfaces, installing showers, basins and the bike store. The result is a really forward-thinking space that commuters can use to help get their working day off to a great start. The eco-credentials of the Dekton® also help to give this Manchester city centre office building a sustainable building solution.

Shaz Islam and his business partner started to set up Smash before Covid-19 hit in February 2020, but when lockdown was introduced only a month after, they decided that nothing would stop them going ahead with creating their dream burger restaurant. The money was invested and the plans had started. They wanted their customers to have a fresh and clean environment, but also a sleek and prompt service, so that’s where Lolly came in.

Shaz explains that it is brilliant knowing that orders are coming in when he isn’t physically taking them, adding: “Knowing that the orders come in from these products and they will go straight on to the video screens in the kitchen makes everything so efficient.” The Lolly kitchen Screens are digital touchscreens which replace traditional kitchen printers and paper ticket systems. The screen acts as the communication link between the front of house and kitchen staff, displaying the orders that have been placed and the time of entry. Online orders are also sent directly to the Kitchen Screens. Once an order has been fulfilled, a simple click ‘complete order’ will clear the order out of the queue and close out the ticket.
It was six months on from being handed the keys to the Smash premises, and at last - now out of lockdown - it was time to officially open and launch the unique burger restaurant. They had no idea what to expect on opening for the first time. Shaz said: “It was so busy at the launch. People had come out of lockdown and food was something to look forward to. We would not have been able to keep up with the huge amount of orders coming through if it hadn’t been for Lolly. At one point, we had thirty orders coming in at the same time, and the fantastic systems in place enabled the communication with the kitchen to flow perfectly. We were able to fulfil every order and live up to our mission.”

The distinction drawn between crane hire and contract lift services has its roots in health and safety regulations and dates back to the introduction of British Standard (BS) 7121, otherwise known as ‘the Safe Crane Standard’, in 1989. With the involvement of the CPA’s Crane Interest Group, BS 7121 outlined the concept of contract lifting services, with a new set of service conditions that went above and beyond the standards required for ordinary crane hire. While BS 7121 in itself isn’t legally binding, its standing as the industry best practice benchmark for crane safety was strengthened in 1998 when it was specifically
In practice, depending on whether you choose crane hire or contract lifting, ultimate responsibility for ensuring the safety of a lift falls to a different party, either the end-user or hire firm. These responsibilities include carrying out risk assessments, producing method statements and ensuring that the lift is planned in a safe, secure way using appropriate equipment. Similarly, legal responsibility for any accidents, injuries or damage incurred during a lift falls on a different party, too. With crane hire, this burden falls on the hirer or end user. In effect, you hire a machine and a qualified driver - how they are used and managed to ensure a safe, satisfactory outcome is up to you. With a contract lift, the roles are reversed. The hire company supplies the crane and driver, but they also take charge of supplying the ‘appointed person’ who is responsible for planning, organising and supervising the lift in accordance with BS 7121 and LOLER. In effect, then, a contract lift is about project managing the entire process, not just supplying a crane and driver. This includes organising slinging and signalling, taking on the burden of legal responsibility for damage or injury, and also making sure appropriate insurance is in place to cover claims should there be any damage to property, goods or people.
The Cost Factor
Deciding on the Right Service
Because of the additional work and responsibility the hire company takes on with a contract hire, not least the insurance costs needed to cover machinery, goods and personnel on site, contract hire services cost more upfront in direct comparison with straightforward crane hire.
Many people who only require occasional or one-off lifting services balk at the extra up-front costs of a contract lift. But what you are paying for is the specialist expertise required to carry out a lift safely and in full compliance with regulations.
There are, however, a range of other supplementary costs that need to be factored in. If you hire a crane, for example, you will need to pay for Hired In Plant Insurance. If you hire in plant on a regular basis and have a long-term insurance policy, this might not be much of an issue. But for one-off occasional cover, Hired In Plant Insurance can be expensive. Personnel is an even bigger cost consideration. Unless you use cranes on a regular basis, you are unlikely to employ a qualified Lift Supervisor, or have anyone trained up for the role of Appointed Person as per BS 7121 and LOLER requirements. The extra cost of a contract lift service includes qualified people to take on these roles and so becomes a necessary expense.
Crane hire is only really suitable for organisations that need to lift on a regular basis and have the infrastructure and qualified personnel available within the company to plan and supervise each job. For these customers, crane hire offers greater flexibility than buying cranes outright. For everyone else, contract lift services are the safest option. Contracting lifting provides a complete lifting service with peace of mind that the job will be managed by professional specialists in full accordance with regulations.

But even if you use cranes on a reasonably regular basis, contract lift may work out cheaper than employing specialist personnel for these roles directly.

Saniflo and Kinedo provide basement bathroom for Grade 2 listed guest house Saniflo UK – part of the SFA Group that designs and manufactures pumps, macerators and shower cubicles – continues to provide drainage solutions to space where normal plumbing does not or cannot exist.

Grade 2 listed Guest House in Edinburgh recently underwent a refurb to provide basement living space comprising a sitting room, bedroom and bathroom. The small, but perfectly formed bathroom was only possible thanks to a Saniflo solution that pumps waste up and away to the drain at street level. A very old, functioning Saniflo, plus an old-fashioned shower and sink were removed in readiness for new wall-hung sanitaryware. This required an alternative pumping solution and a Saniwall Pro Up, which combines a macerator, frame and a Grohe push button cistern installed behind a wall. A stylish cladding solution of stunning white glass covers the frame and the wall hung WC is attached to the frame through the glass panel – which is split into two halves for ease of maintenance. The whole unit provides very low noise levels of just 47dB(A).
Tom Watts, owner of the Sheridan Guest House in Leith, is very impressed with the solution; “The Saniwall Pro Up is very easy to install is very quiet and it can take the waste from the shower and sink as well as the WC. The discharge pipes go up the wall and across the ceiling to a store cupboard in the hallway where it taps into the external downpipe into the drain. Without Saniflo products this bathroom would not have been possible. A Saniplus macerator also features in one of guest bathrooms of this property – an ensuite would not be possible without it. Saniflo products really do enable the addition of bathrooms, especially in older properties with old plumbing infrastructure.”
