MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT HAS NEVER BEEN SO IMPORTANT A recent survey by the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) found that 72% of UK adults say it is important we learn to be a kinder society. Almost two thirds (63%) say that when people are kind to them, it has a positive impact on their mental health and the same number say that being kind to others has a positive impact on their mental health.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, MHF – which organises the event each year – switched the theme from sleep to kindness. ‘Now more than ever, we need to rediscover kindness in our daily lives,’ said Mark Rowland, MHF’s chief executive. ‘We want to use Mental Health Awareness Week to celebrate the thousands of acts of kindness that are so important to our mental health. And we want to start a discussion on the kind of society we want to shape as we emerge from this pandemic.’ Since the first Mental Health Awareness Week in 2001, the Foundation has raised awareness of topics such as body image, stress and relationships. Over the years, hundreds of schools, businesses and communities have started conversations around mental
health and millions of people are more aware through the campaign every year. ‘Protecting our mental health is going to be central to us coping with and recovering from the coronavirus pandemic,’ added Mark, ‘with the psychological and social impacts likely to outlast the physical symptoms of the virus’. IOSH chief executive Bev Messinger agreed: ‘We believe it is essential to protect workers’ physical and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘Healthcare workers and others on the frontline must have adequate mental health support and returnto-work processes throughout these challenging times. ‘Many workers are also working
from home and may begin to experience a range of emotions including a loss of control, boredom, frustration and loneliness, therefore occupational safety and health professionals have important roles in helping organisations and governments manage wellbeing risks during this pandemic. ‘We’re proud to support Mental Health Awareness Week and encourage members, employers and other stakeholders across the world to use and share our free resources on managing mental health and wellbeing and participate in the Week by being kind.’ To celebrate #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, IOSH has launched a series of wellbeing videos which aim to provide you useful support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

GET YOUR EMPLOYEES BACK TO WORK SAFELY AND SMOOTHLY iHASCO, providers of Health & Safety, HR and Compliance eLearning, are currently adding a number of online programmes to their course library to help organisations get their employees back into the workplace as safely and smoothly as possible. Alex Morris, Director at iHASCO, said: “COVID-19 has resulted in a hugely challenging time for businesses for a number of reasons, and as steps are taken to exit lockdown the return to work process will provide employers with even further challenges. “iHASCO have created a returning to work essentials training bundle which will assist employers with helping their staff return to work with confidence and reassurance that their health and safety is taken seriously, which will play a major role in resuming safe operations.” Among these titles is their brandnew Returning to Work after COVID-19 Training, a course that focuses on easing an employee’s transition back to work in light of coronavirus. It covers important
aspects of the return-to-work process, such as risk assessments, team communication and handling anxiety in connection to COVID-19.
other important titles such as DSE Training, Fire Awareness Training, Infection Prevention & Control and Mental Health Awareness Training.
It also provides an insight as to what an employee can expect on their first few days and weeks back at work to help them adjust.
Employers are also being encouraged to take advantage of iHASCO’s free Risk Assessment Tool to conduct a Coronavirus Risk Assessment - which will be crucial upon planning a return to the workplace.
A Resilience Training course, which will provide employees with practical techniques to build resilience and deal with challenging situations, is also available. This is a crucial skill in times of adversity and empowering the employee to regain focus, control, and perspective will help with a smooth transition back to the workplace. These two courses come as part of iHASCO’s Returning to Work Essentials Bundle, along with
Due to the uncertainty of the weeks and months ahead, a clear and careful plan to reopen a workplace is required to ensure the safety of employees and any visitors to its site. This, together with online training for employees, can provide a solid foundation to get a business focussed and navigate the challenges it faces.

SAFETYTECH MARKET COULD EXCEED $850BN BY 2023 Global safety charity Lloyd’s Register Foundation has launched new research which forecasts that the combined global industry potential for the emerging safetytech market could grow to $863bn within three years. The Lloyd’s Register Foundation report, ‘The safetytech market’, predicts that the market will expand rapidly led, in the short-term, by start-ups and tech-driven businesses combining digital technologies that will disrupt traditional approaches to safety in the workplace. Safetytech - the collective term for technology, products and services that are starting to significantly enhance safety management in safety-critical industries and infrastructure - is only recently defined, yet this new research shows that it is set for aggressive growth.
For safety-critical industries alone, the market for safetytech is set to grow by up to $455bn by 2023. These industries and their associated supply chains have yet to realise the full potential of realtime operational insight, made possible from continuously generated data and analytics enabled by digital technologies. The largest proportion of the safetytech market, by technology, is IoT which represents nearly 77% of the market, followed by wearables, robotics and analytics. Globally, 2.8 million deaths each year are directly attributed to inadequate safety measures and hazardous work environments. Work-related safety incidents result in the significant loss of approximately 3.9 % of worldwide GDP, equating to approximately $3,146bn. It is hoped that the market growth outlined in the report will contribute to a reduction in such incidents and accidents.
Professor Richard Clegg, Chief Executive, Lloyd’s Register Foundation, said: “There is a pressing need to invest in Safetytech, as the rate of decline in incident rates has levelled off over the years. Organisations must leverage the market growth potential of Safetytech for the greater good. Not only does it offer an opportunity to transform the market and gain competitive advantage, it will save lives. “Safetytech also presents a clear and sizable opportunity for new start-ups and innovative technology firms to disrupt the safety solutions market. This growing sector has the potential to deliver innumerable benefits to our wellbeing, our quality of life, and our global economy.” Burgeoning digital potential Globally, there remains a lack of insight, innovation and technological advancement in the world of safety. In today’s economy, the need for more robust safety and security measures has become crucial for organisations seeking to thrive. Safetytech market size in safety-critical industries such as energy, marine, manufacturing & food
will grow considerably over the next three years. This growth is expected to be largely driven by the expansion of markets for Wearables (28% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR)), Robotics (15%), Asset Performance Management (17%), Environment Health and Safety (12.5%) and IoT (9%). The report also forecasts that the potential within the manufacturing and natural resources industry will be worth more than $230bn by 2023, a CAGR of 10.5%. The insight gained through Safetytech also unlocks significant value through improved efficiencies, margin gain and market differentiation. James Pomeroy, Group Health, Safety, Environment and Security Director, Lloyd’s Register said: “Real time monitoring and data capturing hardware and software, immediate AI enabled analysis, and automated outcomes will all lead to industry-wide competitive disruption. Safetytech offers the opportunity to transform outmoded approaches to safety, and gain competitive advantage. There’s a sizable firstmover advantage to those organisations and indeed investors that recognise a market set to explode.”

IHASCO RELEASES NEW VERSION OF POPULAR ASBESTOS AWARENESS TRAINING iHASCO, a market-leading provider of Health & Safety and Compliance eLearning, has released an updated version of its popular Asbestos Awareness training course. Having already trained over 150,000 people across the UK and Europe in Asbestos Awareness, iHASCO has made appropriate visual and script changes to bring the programme in line with the look and feel of its newer courses. With the HSE putting the number of asbestos-related deaths at around 5,000 deaths per year, the threat of asbestos exposure is very real. Asbestos fibres can cause serious illnesses and fatalities anywhere between 10 and 50 years after they’ve made it into the lungs. iHASCO’s Asbestos Awareness Training course is IOSH Approved and has been audited by the Independent Asbestos Training Providers (IATP). The online awareness training can be
completed in just 35 minutes and allows employers in the UK to work towards compliance with The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. The course, which is aimed at anyone who could potentially come into contact with asbestos whilst at work, has been designed to educate the user on where asbestos might be found, what to do if it is disturbed, and the the risks associated with the inhalation of asbestos fibres. Real life demos, examples, and step by steps feature throughout the programme to equip learners with the awareness and knowledge they need to keep themselves and others safe. “After months of hard work, my team have created a fantastic product and I’m confident that our
clients will enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed making it.” says Lottie Galvin, iHASCO’s studio manager. “You’ll notice that we’ve embodied different styles of animation, we’ve included a fascinating timeline on the history of asbestos, and - of course - we’ve ensured that this training helps you keep your staff safe whilst keeping you compliant with current legislation.” Anyone interested in this training is invited to watch a short snippet taken from the updated course on The History of Asbestos. There is also an International version of Asbestos Awareness training for those outside of the UK.
COVID-19 DETECTION: NEW ENVIRONMENTAL SWABBING METHOD SOCOTEC, a leading UK provider of testing, inspection and compliance services, has unveiled a new environmental swabbing procedure to determine the presence of SARS-CoV-2 (Coronavirus) on surfaces across a range of workplace environments. The new method has been adopted in light of preliminary research which indicates that the COVID-19 virus has prolonged tenacity on surfaces, with contact via contaminated surfaces suggested as a possible cause of infection.
sampled. This process is repeated using fresh swabs for all other areas and locations that require sampling. Analysis is carried out by a specialist partner laboratory using Ribonucleic acid (RNA) testing, which detects the presence of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA fragments.
This swabbing procedure can be applied across a variety of workplace environments, including offices, factories, communal/public areas and public transportation, testing such surfaces as door/grab handles, light switches, HVAC vents, table/desk tops, office equipment, control panels, seat backs, sinks and toilet cubicles amongst others.
Results will be reported in a comprehensive format comprising observations, salient points and recommendations for improvement, ensuring full compliance with relevant legislation. Photographic evidence will also be compiled within the report to indicate precisely where samples were taken.
To carry out the test, sterile swabs will be gently rubbed and rolled over a set area of the surface to be
“As certain Government restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic begin to ease, many organisations
are now facing the overwhelming task of returning their buildings to full occupancy. SOCOTEC is committed to guiding and supporting its clients as they prepare to resume business operations, ensuring that they remain safe and compliant while doing so,” said Norman Sleeth, managing director, Environment & Safety, SOCOTEC UK. “Our new environmental swabbing method forms just one of SOCOTEC’s wide range of testing, inspection and compliance services that aims to get buildings ‘business ready’, instilling employers with confidence and reassurance regarding occupational health, safety and hygiene as they continue to operate through these uncertain times.”

FEVER DETECTION SYSTEM TO HELP ENSURE RETURN TO ‘NORMAL’ LIFE As the world tries to find ways to safely return to work in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, a new system designed to automatically test body temperature is adding an important technological contribution in the ongoing war against the virus. FeverTIR is a thermography system which quickly and accurately measures people’s body temperature without any need for contact. With a fever being one of the main symptoms of Covid-19 infection (as well as many other contagious diseases), organisations are looking to ways in which employees and other building users can be screened for possible infection. Many of the existing potential methods are labour-intensive, time-consuming and expensive but by adapting a system originally designed to detect temperature in monitoring for potential fires, a ‘plug & play’ solution has been developed which is available in the UK from Reading based company Patol. The system features a high-precision thermal detector with a visible full HD camera which simultaneously measures a person’s core body temperature. This data is accurate to within 0.3°C, supported by a traceable calibration certificate – an important factor when there are alternative technologies on the market which are unproven. The suitability of the system for medical use is illustrated by FeverTIR meeting the ISO IEC 80601-2-59 Medical Electrical Equipment – Part 2-59 standard. This specifically addresses the basic
safety and essential performance requirements of screening thermographs for human febrile temperature screening. Patol Sales Director, Kelvin Miller, comments – “while we are in no way suggesting this is a panacea, it can be a very useful contributor to a more effective and safer return to the life that we knew pre-Covid-19. The cameras can be used in a wide range of applications, including large office buildings, hospitals, retail complexes, airports, construction sites and
hotels – in fact anywhere in which large numbers of people gather and a quick and accurate snapshot of their respective body temperatures could provide an indicator of potential infection.” FeverTIR features a special calibration temperature range for measuring facial temperature, offering prealarms and alarms with on-screen notification. It provides real-time hot-spot analysis and can be easily integrated with other safety and security systems. Alejandro Torres, International Business Development Manager for FeverTIR, comments – “we have been working in the field of multispectral thermography systems for over 20 years so understand how - and, equally importantly, how not - to apply the technology to body temperature monitoring. New and innovative methods are being introduced to help ensure safer environments for all in the new world that we are facing. FeverTIR is part of that response and we are confident that it can make a valuable contribution.”
Over 5,000 people die in the UK each year due to asbestos related diseases. It is a legal requirement that all who may come across asbestos in their day to day work have been provided with the relevant asbestos training. Asbestos can be found in many products used in building materials and may also be present in soils and surrounding grounds.
Have you received asbestos training? UK Asbestos Training Association “UKATA” sets standards in asbestos training and ensures that its members meet those standards. Book with a UKATA Approved asbestos training provider using the nationwide directory online at www.ukata.org.uk or call 01246 824 437.

Go-ahead for ground breaking new £150m mental health facilities at springfield university hospital South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) has today announced that it has secured government approval to start work on its two new state-of-the-art facilities for south west Londoners. This multi-million-pound development will see the construction of two new mental health facilities set to open in 2022 on its largest site in Tooting, south London. This includes eight new inpatient wards which will be further boosted by the modernisation of the Trust’s community services. SWLSTG has already started construction work on this programme, which will include new housing and a 32-acre public park (the first of its kind since the 2012 London Olympics). The Trust has now formally signed contracts for the delivery of the Springfield University Hospital development with Springfield and Tolworth Estate Partnership (STEP), a 50/50 partnership between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures
Ltd and Kajima Partnerships. STEP will act as master developer for the site with Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd as main contractor for the new mental health units and the park, surrounding public realm and infrastructure. This huge milestone in the Trust’s Estate Modernisation Programme marks a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the way the SWLSTG delivers mental health services for 1.1m south west Londoners. The Trust received government approval for its Full Business Case for the development following extensive engagement with the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS Improvement, NHS England and Her Majesty’s Treasury.

Ann Beasley CBE, Chair of South West London and St. George’s Mental Health NHS Trust said: “This is the biggest landmark yet in our Estate Modernisation Programme and we are extremely proud of getting permission to go ahead and being able to start work on these brand-new, first class inpatient facilities. “This new environment will make a huge difference to our patients and the way we provide the best quality care towards their recovery. “It is incredibly important to us that we provide patients with the best environment and services possible and we are pleased to have done this primarily through raising our own funds. “Furthermore, this work will ensure that the Springfield University Hospital site is regenerated in a way which reduces the stigma of mental health conditions by integrating our organisation with our community.” Vanessa Ford, Acting Chief Executive of South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust said: “We have been developing the plans for our brand-new mental health inpatient wards for many years and we are delighted to have received government approval, meaning we can begin construction on these state-ofthe-art inpatient buildings.
The plans, now formally approved, will bring forward a range of benefits to the people who use the Trust’s services, their carers and the local community, including: • World class mental health facilities: delivering the best care for patients • 839 brand new homes: providing housing for local families in Tooting • A 32-acre public park: providing excellent outdoor space including a gym and play areas for our local community • Community shops and a café: for local residents to meet and relax • Extensive community healthcare: treating people closer to their families and their home • District heating system and centralised energy centre: providing efficient heating and reducing carbon emissions • Land to be made available for a new school: investing in our children’s future • More than £5 million for new transport facilities: boosting transport links for local residents
“The wards will revolutionise the way we deliver care for generations to come and ensure we can provide high quality and safe services. The new facilities have been carefully designed alongside our clinicians and service users to provide the most supportive environment and innovative facilities for the delivery of mental health care. “As well good news for patients, the new hospital facilities will be good news for the environment with much more efficient use of energy and working towards a carbon neutral footprint.” Harriet Gladwell-Phillips, the STEP General Manager commented: “We are delighted to be involved in the Estate Modernisation Programme at Springfield. It’s a pioneering project for the NHS providing not only much needed high quality mental health facilities, but also housing and new green spaces for south west London. “The whole area will benefit from the redevelopment of the site, which will bring together new and existing people who live and work at Springfield to create a community with mental health and wellbeing at its heart.”

T
he Redbacks Pocket Kneepad, specifically designed to fit work trousers, features a flexible leaf-spring held within a thermoplastic honeycomb matrix which unlike foam or gel ensures a high compression rate and 100% recovery to its original shape. This combination and the inherent ‘memory’ aspect gives unique controlled weight distribution; the deceleration of pressure protects both the knees and body from potentially damaging impact forces and gives long lasting, anti-fatigue support; traditional foam or gel solutions create point-pressure which focus the force or energy to a point which is then transmitted back into the knee joint and beyond. Easy to slide in and curved to fit comfortably around the knee, the water-resistant pads which conform to CE EN14404 Type 2 Level 1 help to protect against possible injury from sharp objects, wick away sweat and provide thermal protection from warm or cold surfaces; they are machine washable at 30°c and 100% recyclable.
