4 HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE

Helping Healthcare to Heal GEZE has launched ‘Helping Healthcare to Heal’ an initiative created to recognise that putting patients at the centre of hospital, clinic and doctors’ surgery building design can help in the process of healing and recovery. Equipment and materials specified and installed within the building can actively contribute to and promote well-being.

In creating the initiative GEZE looked at addressing areas that encourage recovery and provide patient comfort: • Prevent environmental stresses such as noise from slamming doors or lack of privacy without creating barriers. • Enable patients and residents to be as close to nature as possible through outdoor views, sufficient sunlight and fresh air. • Give patients and residents a feeling of control by being offered opportunities to access outside spaces and move around safely and contact free, not feeling imprisoned but protected in the building. There is more information available on the GEZE UK website or alternatively GEZE have produced a

comprehensive brochure for the healthcare industry that looks at providing solutions for the hygiene, safety and well-being of not only patients but employees as well. It reviews each area of a healthcare building in detail identifying the issues of each, whether it is comfort, safety, hygiene, attractive design, sustainability, accessibility or fire safety and provides advice on overcoming them. It can be downloaded from the website or by clicking this link. Andy Howland, sales and marketing director said “The COVID-19 pandemic has brought an intense focus on all aspects of healthcare in the UK and as we look ahead it’s likely that its impact will continue for some sometime with long lasting changes to the building design of hospital and healthcare facilities. At GEZE we support clients and architects as they consider these design implications in new construction and refurbishments to existing buildings.”

DispenserONE®:

The ‘Fit and Forget’ sanitizer system

After 18 months during which hand hygiene was thrust into the spotlight like never before, SEKO’s groundbreaking DispenserONE® sanitizer system – purpose-designed in response to coronavirus – has transformed the way building managers deliver hand hygiene. But disposable and conventional light-duty sanitizer systems have been on the market for decades, so why the need to replace them? Such systems were adequate in the pre-COVID world, with their basic pump mechanism and low capacity capable of meeting low demand which was limited to hospitals, doctors’ surgeries and other healthcare sites. However, when COVID arrived and the need for hand sanitizer systems increased, these light-duty devices were expected to deal with constant, widespread use despite their limitations. The sight of a pelican pump, usually placed on a countertop or small table at a building entrance, has become common during the pandemic as managers attempt to deliver COVID-secure arrangements. As well as being unhygienic due to their manual operation, pump-action devices are messy, unsightly and unsafe as they leak and leave sanitizer dripping onto the surface and floor where they may create a slip hazard. An alternative to disposable dispensers are lightduty refillable systems mounted to walls and stands, which also splash and leak due to their primitive pump design. These units require regular repair and, ultimately, replacement after around six months on average. For building operators, this results in constant cleaning, refilling, repairing and replacement of dispensers – increasing staff workload and incurring hidden costs. From these limitations, the DispenserONE® range was born, as the SEKO R&D team worked to create a series of “fit and forget” systems to provide hassle-free, yet highly-effective infection control in any building. Built around an ultra-reliable motor-driven pump, DispenserONE® provides a consistently smooth, soft flow of sanitizer and because residual product remains within the mechanism once dosing is completed, the system is completely leak-free. The high-capacity DispenserONE® is an operator’s dream in that it requires zero maintenance during opening hours, with the only requirements an occasional out-of-hours refill and, in the case of the battery-powered models, recharge.

This means that, once installed, DispenserONE® can be left in service without the need to constantly refill or clean around the unit, its presence offering reassurance not only to the user, but to the building manager who can have complete faith in their hand hygiene arrangements. SEKO’s range covers every building requirement for hand hygiene, ensuring devices are properly sized with a capacity suited to footfall, starting with DispenserONE® Mini which offers a super-slim profile and minimal footprint that make it ideal for convenience stores, beauty salons and other sites where space is at a premium. For the largest sites including international airports, conference centre and sports stadia there’s the original DispenserONE®, a high-capacity, mainspowered unit delivering up to 25,000 doses between refills and an optional 17” multimedia screen. Recognizing the ever-changing coronavirus restrictions around the world, SEKO has also developed DispenserONE® Thermoscan, which allows building managers to control entry depending on combinations of criteria such as sanitizer use, body temperature and face covering. As well as providing peace of mind to the operator over infection control, this model gives residents, staff and visitors confidence at a time when many are anxious over the lifting of restrictions. Adding to this the system’s IoT-enabled remote connectivity, customizability and optional multimedia screen, DispenserONE® earns its place as the ultimate hand-hygiene product for 2021 and beyond.

18 HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE

Selecting a Gas Detector for Water Treatment Applications When choosing a gas detector for use in water treatment applications, engineers should focus on simple, efficient, proven products from a supplier experienced in the provision of end-to-end solutions for this challenging marketplace. Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection can offer a wide repertoire of detectors based on a number of effective sensor technologies. As a process, the treatment of wastewater has a number of inherent hazards, namely the generation of flammable and toxic gases such as methane (CH4) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Furthermore, oxygen (O2) enrichment and ozone (O3) can

present safety risks if the process requires technologies that use these gases, while for pH control some water treatment plants rely on carbon dioxide (CO2), which can be toxic and create an oxygen deficiency hazard. Toxic chemical gases such as ammonia (NH3) and chlorine (Cl) are common in the preparation of drinking water, which means leak detection is essential to identify

any emissions from storage or processing equipment.

Essential protection Water treatment plants can protect staff and contractors from the dangers of explosion, intoxication and fire by ensuring portable gas detectors form part of their personal protective equipment (PPE). Indeed, for temporary or mobile use in confined spaces, Teledyne offers a wide range of portable gas detectors designed to meet the requirements of the water/wastewater sector. Of course, many more advantages accrue from combining portable detectors with their fixed counterparts. Fixed gas detectors help deliver the appropriate process automation levels required to reduce running costs and manage risk with minimal operator intervention. As well as averting health risks, careful product selection can also minimise the gas detector’s total cost of ownership (TCO). H2S, for instance, can corrode metals like steel, copper and brass, which means a gas detection sensor housed in stainless steel is a wise choice.

Technology decisions Another critical selection decision involves the type of sensor technology, which for gas detection

HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE 19

typically centres on electrochemical, semiconductor, infrared (IR) or catalytic. For water treatment plants that want to monitor O2 deficiency or enrichment, or the presence of low levels of toxic gases such as H2S or Cl, electrochemical sensors are the common choice. A popular pick here is the Teledyne DGi-TT7-E intelligent gas detector. This easyto-use product features an integral daylight-readable alphanumeric display that indicates local status and alarm level. The selection of semiconductor sensors, which have a longer operating life under harsh operating conditions than their electrochemical counterparts, usually occurs where very high concentrations of H2S are present, or where ambient temperature or humidity is high. With its high reactivity, strong signal stability and long operating life, the Teledyne CTX 300 fixed detector for O2, CO2 and other toxic gases, is a popular solution. The CTX 300

transmits data in record time, while maintaining the unit is easy thanks to its pre-calibrated sensors and optional LCD display. IR sensors are preferable for the detection of explosive gases such as CH4 or CO2, or for very corrosive atmospheres containing high levels of H2S. Here, detection is based on the fact that each gas absorbs light on a specific wavelength in the infrared spectrum. Notably, the robust nature of IR sensor cells from Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection means they require only one annual maintenance routine and come with a five-year guarantee. A case in point is the Teledyne GD10 series IR gas detector, which differs from all other models because it utilises silicon-based solid-state IR sources that carry a 15-year warranty. Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection offers the longest combined detector and IR source guarantee on the market. The most common alternative to an IR sensor is a catalytic sensor, which is not as durable but consumes less

power. As many water treatment plants are in remote locations and take advantage of solar energy, this factor can prove attractive. Among the Teledyne recommendations here is the DG-TX7 intelligent gas detector, which houses a pair of OXYCOL catalytic sensors. Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection can also provide sampling kits for the water treatment industry, for applications such as areas highly saturated in H2S.

Take advice As with all gas detection tasks in the water treatment sector, it is essential to ensure the technology is adapted to the application. Strong concentrations of gas, either immediate or accumulating over time, along with harsh and/or corrosive operating environments, demand proven products. But each application is different, so consulting with a specialist such as Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection is vital in defining the optimum solution for any particular requirements.

Mackwell Health Partners With Whitebox to Create Sustainable Decontamination Solutions For Re-Usable Healthcare PPE

The Mackwell Health Whitebox enables healthcare institutions to reliably disinfect and reuse PPE and other critical equipment

Mackwell Health, part of the Mackwell Group, has today announced that it has partnered with Whitebox, a Swedish-based provider of innovative surface and air disinfection solutions, to develop state of the art UV-C disinfection chambers for the healthcare industry. Available now, the Mackwell Health Whitebox is designed to quickly and reliably disinfect personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with healthcare regulations and guidelines. Estimates show the NHS and social care segments spent roughly £500 million on disposable respiratory PPE in 2020. 60% of that cost was spent on higher performance tight fitting FFP grade respirators, with the remainder being disposable Type IIR loose fitting surgical masks. However, FFP respirators only accounted for 5% of the total volume of this PPE. With health staff and trade associations continuing to lobby for improvements in worker protection by increasing the usage of FFP respirators, the resulting uplift in

volume would create a significantly increased cost burden for disposable masks and respirators. Disposable PPE also creates a major environmental challenge, with each item containing significant amounts of single-use nonrecyclable plastic materials. Reusable respirators and masks offer the potential to address both environmental and economic challenges. With the healthcare segment having expressed concerns over the ability to effectively decontaminate items

HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE 25

between use, this partnership between Mackwell Health and Whitebox provides the opportunity to address those concerns and introduce a reliable and more sustainable solution. Promoting a sustainable and economic approach to respiratory PPE, the Mackwell Health Whitebox can also be programmed to disinfect items used more broadly across the healthcare industry. For example, optometrists - who need to disinfect lenses and spectacle frames - or dentists - who rely on sterile dental implements with every patient - can leverage the Mackwell Health Whitebox for a sustainable solution to disinfection. Programmes have already been created to disinfect reusable respirators, as well as systems such as Mackwell Health’s own ProtectivAIR® UV-powered respirator system. Backed by government laboratory evidence, scientific models can be created for specific items of medical equipment, which allows the programming of automated treatment cycles, tailored to the object to be treated, to achieve a targeted level of disinfection. Through the Mackwell Health Whitebox, 4 log (99.99%) disinfection for reusable PPE can be achieved using cycles of between 30 seconds and 1 minute - depending on the item. Available in Mini, Micro and Wheelchair-sized boxes, The Mackwell Health Whitebox provides a practical solution for health staff, NHS Trusts, primary care organisations and other stakeholders in the Health and social care sector.

Portable, convenient and user friendly, boxes can fit wherever required, from benches to desktops. Andy Davies, Commercial Director at Mackwell Health, said: “Our partnership with Whitebox provides a unique solution that can greatly enhance the quality and availability of reusable PPE. Protective equipment is indispensable to the healthcare industry, but until now it has also proven costly and wasteful. Without solutions such as this, the situation will only get worse as more due diligence is rightly paid to protecting the workforce effectively. “The Mackwell Health Whitebox creates a sustainable approach to PPE, promoting a circular economy model that benefits the environment, increases the volume of quality equipment for health staff, and improves cost efficiency. We are proud to be partnering with such a forward thinking and innovative organisation as Whitebox, delivering its solution to make a positive impact within healthcare.” Erik Wikström, Managing Director and CEO of Whitebox, said: “We are excited to be entering the UK market by partnering with Mackwell Health, a like-minded company that has a similar vision to ours around infection control. Whitebox is determined to deliver a sustainable and reliable solution that helps to keep people safe, and this is only the beginning of a strong and innovative relationship that can make a real difference to healthcare.”
