Save the world, one city at a time: Reinventing Cities
Calling all architects, designers, urban planners, entrepreneurs, artists, environmentalists and innovators: enter the Reinventing Cities competition
Nithurst Farm by Adam Richards Architects Nithurst Farm is a minimalist farmhouse located in Upperton, United Kingdom, designed by Adam Richards Architects. Situated on an open field within the South Downs National Park, the newly built family home is formed of structural concrete wrapped with brick, and topped with a black zinc roof. The volumes progress in a step-motion, starting with the single-story entrance at the north and elevating into a three-story tower, expressed as a grid, toward the south. The entrance reveals a darkened vestibule presented in the form of exposed concrete walls.
Nine cities – Cape Town, Chicago, Dubai, Madrid, Milan, Montreal, Singapore, Reykjavik, and Rome – invite proposals from multidisciplinary teams of development experts and professionals. Teams can submit comprehensive plans to reimagine 25 outdated, underused areas across these cities, into carbonneutral, resilient urban development projects.
30 percent of global resource consumption. The reality of the climate emergency means a whole reimagining of how we build and structure communities. Reinventing Cities channels the innovation and creativity of businesses and individuals to illustrate the promise of cleaner, smarter development.
As the threat posed by the climate emergency becomes increasingly urgent, Reinventing Cities accelerates the decarbonisation of cities around the world to create new, more sustainable models of urban development.
The first Reinventing Cities competition, launched in 2017, generated inspiring projects and proposals that will fundamentally change the way people live and work. Winning proposals included the largest wooden building in Iceland, the first zero carbon neighbourhood in Paris, the largest urban solar farm in Texas, and the first zero-carbon social-housing project in Italy.
Buildings account for about half of C40 cities’ greenhouse gas emissions. Common construction materials like steel and concrete are responsible for more than

The concrete is left purposefully raw, and are softened by brass accents and white oiled pine floorboards and reclaimed stone. Bouygues to start £115m Canterbury Riverside scheme Bouygues has got the go-ahead to start Canterbury’s £115m mixed-use scheme in the Kingsmead area of the city. The firm’s development arm Linkcity has exchanged contracts with the council and Hyde Group to bring forward the project on the site of a former coach park. It will involve building a multiplex cinema and restaurants, 491 student rooms and 189 affordable flats. Bouygues UK has been appointed as the main contrac-
tor for the scheme, which will be delivered using modern methods of construction. With all agreements now in place, construction will begin imminently. The new student residences and commercial elements will complete in Autumn 2021, with residents moving into the new homes in 2022.
Town Centre Regeneration Reaches Milestone Plans to rejuvenate Stevenage town centre have taken a major step forward. Contractor Mace has submitted a planning application to regenerate 14.5 acres of the town centre, known as SG1. It will eventually provide more than 1,800 high-quality new homes, 3,500 sqm of retail and commercial floor space, a new public square and a new park, as well as a Public Services Hub and a new primary school. Inspired by the original building blocks and the unique heritage of the New Town, SG1 will also complement the new developments across the town that are already underway at the north end of Queensway and on the Town Square. Kevin Cowin, Director at Mace, said: “This is an ambitious and carefully crafted proposal that expresses our confidence in Stevenage town centre. We aim to revitalise the town centre by introducing new homes, vibrant activities, community facilities and inviting public spaces. Our vision
is to deliver a thriving, successful and attractive heart to Stevenage which will serve the needs of local people and businesses for decades to come.” The planning submission provides an outline proposal for the 14.5 acre masterplan which is divided into 10 development plots. It also contains a detailed application for the first two plots in the first phase which includes the area of Swingate South Car Park and Swingate House, as well as the former police building on Southgate. The first phase proposes 760 new homes in the town centre. Future phases will add new retail and commercial floor space in addition to further new homes.
The creation of new green spaces and tree planting is a central theme for the masterplan proposals. There will be increased biodiversity and new planting in an attractive new Garden Square adjacent to The Hub and the historic Town Square, a new public tree-lined boulevard, and a new park and pond at the new Southgate Park to the south of Queensway. A new mini square which will be known as ‘Arrival Square’ is also planned to greet visitors at the bottom of the access ramp to the railway station and welcome people to the town centre. Kevin Cowin added: “During our consultation on the SG1 masterplan over the summer, one of the key things residents and town centre businesses told us was the importance of creating attractive welcoming public spaces where people can meet and relax. Our planning application responds to what local people have told us.”
At the centre of the masterplan fronting onto the Town Square will be a new Public Services Hub for the people of Stevenage. The Hub will be the focal point for a wide range of public services, including NHS health facilities, a new public library, the voluntary sector and Council services. developer-update.co.uk

Egyptian stone structure in a new guise: Embassy of Egypt by Promontorio The design of the Egyptian Embassy building in Lisbon is a modern interpretation of the long tradition of monolithic stone structures in Egypt. In the process Promontorio Architects have skilfully combined the ideas of security and a safe haven with a representation of the culture, values and history of the country. The new Egyptian embassy in the affluent Restelo district of Lisbon takes its place among numerous villas built in the forties and fifties and bordering the roads, whereby many of the villas have been converted into diplomatic representations. The architecture of the Egyptian building is largely determined by the high security requirements that an embassy has to fulfil. The Egyptian embassy has a central position on the property and is surrounded by gardens. Access to the public entrance and the underground car park is provided through large security gates.
The monolithic building is comprised of various volumes offset and angled to result in several balconies and exterior areas. The façade is formed out of dark, precast panels of glass-fibre reinforced concrete (GRC), a material that displays a particularly high degree of tensile and flexural strength thanks to its combination of sand and glass-fibre. Installed as part of a post-and-lintel structure, the panels are covered in a bas-relief pattern produced using a mould custom-made for the project. The pattern, which imitates the geometric motifs of Egyptian culture in an understated way, creates interesting shadow effects that enliven the solid mass of the façade. At the same time the anthracite-coloured pigment of the concrete accentuates the Egyptian embassy’s monumental appearance and forms a strong contrast to the slender bronze-coloured window profiles. Inside the building, sharp lines are drawn between private and public areas. Private uses are located in closed-off rooms, screened off from scrutiny from the outside world, and public ones are restricted solely to atrium areas, meaning visitors can be seen at all times in the building. Panels made up of vertical timber slats start on the staircase balustrades and continue onto the walls, enveloping the spaces. The texture and grain of the wood create a pleasantly warm atmosphere in the solidly constructed building and form a contrast to the white stone slabs in the rest of the interior. The large atrium, the building’s centrepiece, is flooded with natural light from a large skylight. A lattice of traditional Egyptian patterns inserted below the glass lends interest by creating a play of light and shade on the white stone of the floor.

Alligator park plan for £230m mixed use London site Developer Avanton is hatching plans for an alligator park and farm to be a feature of its £230m mixed use scheme in south London. The Old Kent Road site contains an iconic gasholder which is set to be turned into a feature of the four acre housing and industrial project. Avanton’s alligator plan would see the reptiles housed within a series of deep waterfeatures within the gasholder alongside a visitors’ centre and educational facility. Part of the 48.8 metre high gasholder frame would be shrouded with special shielded glass to create a conservatory and the warm conditions alligators need to thrive. Other alternatives being explored for the gasholder frame are to transform it into a striking art-like architectural feature within the gardens and parkland of the new development.
Within the skeleton of the gasholder there are optional plans for a pavilion, water features and gardens, providing a central feature for the residential and commercial buildings within the new development.
Performance Plywood Hanson Plywood share the benefits of Performance Plywood®for construction projects
(particularly rain). The wood can be disfigured by fungi as well as attacked by wood boring insects including termites.
Marine Plywood has been used in construction applications in the belief that the product will be a higher quality of plywood. Marine Grade Plywood was not originally intended for construction applications, it was produced for the ship building industry.
Essential elements of plywood for EN 636–3:
In today’s world the availability of legal and sustainable hardwoods to produce Marine Grade Plywood is very limited, which makes the product relatively expensive to produce. Construction specifications should be satisfied with products that are fit-for-purpose taking into account the application and the particular performance criteria required. With this in mind, Hanson Plywood have worked to develop and present a product that is specifically intended for the construction industry and offers full technical and environmental classifications. Performance Plywood® is the result of this work and is a reliably branded hardwood plywood produced specifically for construction applications. It is CE marked and tested to meet EN 636 Use Class 3 thus making it suitable for use as structural components in exterior conditions. The product carries FSC® chain of custody and is FLEGT licenced to verify legality under the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR).
Use in Exterior Conditions EN 636-3 specifies the requirements for plywood for use in external applications as defined in Use Class 3, where the moisture content will frequently be above 20 per cent. Use Class 3 is defined fully in EN 335:2013 but essentially it outlines situations in which wood or a wood-based product is above ground and exposed to the weather
Bonding quality The bonding quality of the plywood needs to comply with the requirements of Bonding Class 3 of EN 314-2.
Biological durability It is important to assess whether the durability of the plywood is sufficient for prevailing climate conditions. If it is not sufficient, then it is worth considering another solution such as the preservative treatment on the plywood. Guidance on factors affecting durability can be found in CEN/TS 1099. When specifying plywood for Use Class 3, appropriate surface and edge coating should also be considered.
Legal and Sustainable Performance Plywood® is imported from Indonesia and is FLEGT Licensed. Following the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s implementation of a robust timber legality assurance system (SVLK), the country has fully complied with the legal requirements set out by the European Union. Indonesia is the first country to offer FLEGT Licensed timber products that are fully compliant with EUTR requirements. In addition to this attestation to legality, the timber in Hanson Performance Plywood® is sourced from FSC® forest management units. Performance Plywood® not only adheres to a long list of applicable standards, but also follows a strict due diligence process. This ensures the product is safe, and fit for use in a multitude of applications, specifically construction.

Keeping your garden in tip top condition this Winter During the winter months it’s easy for us to retreat to the warmth of the home instead of spending time in the garden, but it still requires a little maintenance during these colder months to ensure that it is fighting fit for the year ahead. Here are some handy tips for keeping your garden in great shape over the winter from garden specialists Oeco Garden Rooms so you can start planning your summer garden.
Lawn maintenance Winter is the ideal time of year to prepare an area for a new lawn; simply dig out the proposed area making sure to leave some clumps of soil on the surface. These clumps will be broken down by the frost, creating a great base for the new lawn. When maintaining your existing lawn it is important to realise that, on warmer days there will be some growth, but this can be kept to a minimum by not feeding the grass. However, if developer-update.co.uk
the grass does grow longer than you’d like you can cut it, but we recommend only cutting it down by a third. Grass that is too short can have a hard time surviving the colder weather, whereas grass that is too long can become brittle with the frost, so a happy medium is required.
13 It is important to keep weeds and moss under control throughout winter as they can quickly take over your lawn. It is also a good idea to regularly rake fallen leaves and other debris so that the grass still has access to the sunlight.
Winter plant maintenance As the temperatures drop, the plants that are not killed by the frost prepare to go dormant until the warmer weather comes. Cut off any blackened stems and clear out any dead foliage such as annual flowers and vegetables to prevent diseases from spreading to other areas of the garden. Spread a thick layer of mulch over all of the remaining plants and soil; this keeps the temperature much more even so that the plants can acclimatise much faster without being stressed; fallen leaves from any trees on the property also make a good source of mulch so don’t discard them.
Gardening tool maintenance Gardening equipment such as lawnmowers are rarely needed during the winter, so it is the perfect time to service it. Sharpen the lawnmower blades and ensure that the engine is serviced to keep it in tip top condition. Empty any remaining fuel or check that the electricity lead is well maintained before storing away. Drain all of your hoses to prevent frost attack and wrap hessian fabric around any external taps and pipes to protect them from the cold. Tools which will not be needed such as lawn edger’s and pruning shears should be wiped clean and all metal parts sprayed with a lubricant like WD40 to prevent corrosion. For tools which will still be in use such as garden spades and forks, these should be cleaned off after each use.

HemingwayDesign creates new logo for Dreamland’s 100th anniversary year
developer-update.co.uk
Dreamland Margate has once again teamed up with HemingwayDesign to create a striking new logo for the amusement park’s 100th anniversary.
15
The family-led design studio has created the unique Dreamland 100 brand for use throughout 2020, when the iconic amusement park will celebrate its centenary. HemingwayDesign’s approach was to take influence from the retro style of Margate’s seafront promenade and bring it up to date with a touch of modernist minimalism. They have produced a striking new wordmark for the centenary aimed to appeal to lifelong Dreamland visitors and new fans alike. In a series of playful animations, the logo comes to life by reflecting the motion and energy of Dreamland’s rides – the drop of the Scenic Railway, the spinning of the Hurricane Jets, the drama of the Pendulum and the constant activity across the park - and forms the primary visual language throughout both print and digital. The brand celebrates Dreamland’s heritage with the slogan: 1000 smiles per hour, 100 years, 10 decades, 1 Dreamland. While a leisure venue has existed on the Margate site since the 1870s, it was not until 1920 that John Henry Iles transformed it into the pleasure garden and amusement park Dreamland – and opened the famous Scenic Railway to the public. When the re-imagined Dreamland opened in 2015, HemingwayDesign was appointed to create the brand and design proposition. Their work garnered significant media coverage and awards, and made Dreamland one of the most sought after locations for photo shoots, music videos and family fun in the UK. 2019 has been Dreamland’s most successful year since reopening, welcoming more than 700,000 visitors to the free-to-enter park throughout the season. A series of large-scale events, new art commissions and festival fun is being planned for the amusement park in 2020 to mark the landmark anniversary. Acts already announced include Mike Skinner (DJ set), DJ Spoony, Faithless (DJ Set), The Levellers and a huge line-up for the
Soundcrash Funk and Soul Weekender in May. Dreamland can also reveal that it will host two major international music acts on the park in the summer, each with a 15,000 capacity – the biggest events since the 2017 one day takeover by Gorillaz. Dreamland CEO Eddie Kemsley (F) said: “Our 100th year will celebrate the future of Margate and Dreamland as well as its past. “Dreamland is one of the most important and striking attractions in the country, it is part of our cultural heritage. So much love and hard work has gone into preserving and celebrating this cherished seaside attraction over the past ten decades; we are immensely proud to introduce it to a new generation of Dreamers and to give them something sensational to talk about in 2020.
celebrations on weekends and school holidays from 7th to 31st December. The park is free to enter, and guests can book tickets for the new Grotto Experience in advance (which includes rides). For the remainder of 2019, dreamers can also bag tickets for shows from Fabio & Grooverider, Soul II Soul, The Cuban Brothers with DJ Yoda, and the Chase & Status (DJ Set) New Year’s Eve party. For more information and daily opening times, visit www.dreamland.co.uk.
“Not only do we have a huge line up of events in the works, but we also look forward to sharing stories from our past – and celebrating our loyal customers – with the rest of the world. “This year will go down in Dreamland’s history books as one of the greatest ever – watch this space.” Dreamland is currently open for the Winterland Margate festive developer-update.co.uk

Other features include: • flue up to 30+ metres for concentric • Turbo Fan • Built-in controller as standard on both internal and external models
The new Rinnai Sensei N Series water heater range offers a new and more compact and enhanced combustion design that allows for easier installation and enhanced operational performance together with increased levels of serviceability.
• Cascade Cable assembly allows up to 24 water heaters to be connected and function as one total and complete system Any number of N-series Rinnai water heaters can be manifolded together enabling the largest capacities on the market.
All components in the range are designed and manufactured by Rinnai, and this ensures maximum quality and reliability from the industry leader in commercial continuous flow water heating products and systems.
• Frost Protection – minus 15°C on the internal versions and minus 20 °C on the external versions
The Rinnai Sensei N Series is the first ever continuous flow hot water heating unit manufactured with stainless steel heat exchangers to be available in the UK - this gives a greatly extended working life at optimum performance to each of the four models in the range. Added to this is the Sensei N Series market leading extended warranties. The four models are: the N1600i giving 954 litres per hour; the N1600e (external) also giving 954 litres per hour (at 50 degrees); the N1300i giving 775 litres per hour and the N1300e also giving 775 litres per hours of developer-update.co.uk
• Built in flue damper • Air inlet filter
• New PCB Design • Controller as standard – Lockable, set up of appliance, Temperature set up to 75°C • Maintenance Monitor for engineers
19 temperature controlled at 50 degrees. The two 1600s have load profiles of XXL and are water efficiency class A rated, while the 1300s are load profile XL and are also water efficiency class A rated. Rinnai manufactures over 2 million hot water heating units each year and so can offer advantageous cost savings for installers and end users. The N Series are probably the most competitively priced type of their kind currently available to the UK sector. All the range are also low-NOx and the Sensei N Series utilises Rinnai’s patented advanced burner technology with a 13-1 turn down ratio – the largest on the market – with extremely quiet operation. Integral controls on the units enable the water heater to achieve high efficiencies because of advanced burner control and high modulation ranges. In reducing Legionella proliferation, Rinnai has developed additional ‘SMART’ controls for secondary return DHW systems in the form of an advanced temperature control system which allows for safe running of water at 42°C core temperature during the day and 60°C overnight. The advanced burner controls with the Sensei N Series models ensure that all the appliances are well ahead of the NOx requirements set within ErP. The current level of permissible NOx set by ErP is 56 mg/Kwh. The Sensei N Series range have been third-party tested at 28 mg/Kwh making them one of the greenest water heating appliances available.
As the units do not incorporate storage their ‘green credentials’ are further recognised by BREEAM and score additional credits under the building regulations. The industry uptake of Rinnai’s continuous flow heater systems are proven to be more energy efficient than conventional storage
systems and are increasingly the experts’ preferred method of hot water provision. Rinnai units easily cater for any size projects that need high volumes of water at intermittent times of day. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW.RINNAIUK.COM developer-update.co.uk

Yourkeys have just taken a massive step towards dramatically changing the way property is bought and sold by completing the first fully digitised end-to-end property transaction. The company, backed by The Mortgage Advice Bureau amongst others, ties together all of the major stakeholders in the transaction including conveyancers, mortgage brokers, lenders, housebuilders and estate agents. Putting the above transaction into context, Yourkeys have reduced the time to reach exchange of contracts from the industry average of 63 days, down to just 11 days. This milestone achievement by the Yourkeys team is a gamechanger for the industry as a whole. Yourkeys CEO, Riccardo Iannucci-Dawson is the pioneer behind this tech revolution and recognised back in 2017 that the house purchase process was completely fragmented. “The problem is that there are lots of companies involved in each transaction and their systems don’t talk to each other. We saw the opportunity to build a data layer that pulls together inputs from everyone involved in the process.” No easy feat when you consider that there are thousands of legal firms and financial advisors nationally. “This was a huge challenge but working with our partners, we achieved it and now have over 2,500 companies directly integrated into the platform.” he added. Digging a little deeper into the magic behind Yourkeys, the technology pulls together over 200 data sets from multiple sources to reduce buyer onboarding time from weeks to just minutes. In practical terms, this is a huge leap forward for conveyancers who are tasked with collating a tonne of information at the start of the home purchase process. With the Yourkeys tech in place, ID verification, anti-money laundering checks, mortgage applications and dozens of different documents are pulled together in minutes which developer-update.co.uk
can be instantly passed down the supply chain. The result is a dramatic acceleration of the process and a better customer experience all round. Yourkeys pulled together some major companies from the sector, including The Conveyancing Association, The Mortgage Advice Bureau, HMLR (Land Registry), Search Acumen, LEAP, Redbrick Solutions, Convey Choice, UK Finance and many more to make the magic happen. Dawson commented, “We knew we needed to work with the most forward-thinking partners to completely revolutionise the process, an innovation long overdue!” Peter Beard, Sales Director of MBU Capital, who performed the first transaction on their development in Stevenage said: “This is revolutionary, not only for us but for the market in general. The problem with the sales process has always been that there are too many people involved with no oversight of what’s happening. Yourkeys stitches all the pieces together to give complete transparency to all involved without any additional work or input of information.” Yourkeys are currently focussed on the new build sector however Dawson says that the technology will be adapted for the second-hand market by Q2 2020: “We’re aiming to complete 10,000 transactions nationally in 2020 with at least 60% coverage of all legal firms and IFA’s, and that includes the second-hand market. We already have some big nationwide companies ready to trial this new functionality, so it’s very exciting times.” www.yourkeys.com

Panasonic runs CO2 Commercial refrigeration training with Hawco A specialist commercial refrigeration and CO2 awareness training day was held at Panasonic UK HQ in Bracknell with distributor Hawco and some of their customers.
Attendee, David Jupp, Director of Castle Fridge Ltd who has been in the commercial refrigeration industry since 1982 commented, “the training day was very informative, I learnt a lot and believe the future is exciting for commercial refrigeration and the use of CO2. Over the next five years I think that we will start to see colossal changes within the industry with the adoption of more natural refrigerants such as CO2.” Laura Fleming, Area Sales Manager North with experience in Commercial Refrigeration in the UK for Panasonic, informed attendees about the ten-year history in CO2 commercial refrigeration that Panasonic has with their range of condensing units. The range was first launched in Japan in 2001, with now over 10,000 units sold (as of the end of November 2018). The key factors to the success of the range are reliability, the compact size, the unique two stage developer-update.co.uk
compressor, the easy installation and the use of the natural refrigerant CO2. Attendees were reminded of the EU F-Gas regulations and the phase out that will be coming into force in 2022 which will ban certain refrigerants for use in new installations. These regulations are being driven by environmental concerns, where legislation is requiring the increased adoption of ‘alternative’ refrigerants of which CO2 is one. CO2 is a very attractive natural alternative with a zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) and a GWP (Global Warming Potential) equal to 1 (compared to a refrigerant like R404A with a GWP of 3922). Indy Tharnvithian, Technical Specialist Manager for CO2 at Panasonic added “When installing the Panasonic CO2 range just two settings are required – vacuum mode and
evaporating setting – everything else is pre-set. Obviously if need be, settings can easily be modified with alarms that will indicate any wrong settings. If installers register on the Panasonic Pro-Club website, they will have access to commissioning tools that includes a cooling capacity calculator, pipe calculator and EEV quick selection tool.” Indy further provided insightful tips on safety issues when working with CO2 and the importance of the subcritical and transcritical pressure testing required along with the smaller pipe sizes in addition to looking over a unit in operating mode.
29
Indy also stressed the importance of attending a certified CO2 training course to ensure confidence when working with CO2 and to future proof installer businesses as CO2 is more widely adopted as a commercial refrigerant.
specifically developed for small to medium capacity applications within the retail and food service sectors and is particularly suited for installations in small supermarkets, convenience stores and garage forecourt retail operations.
David of Castle Fridge further added “I will most certainly be looking to complete the recommended CO2 City & Guilds training. Due to the complexities of installing CO2, installers will have to have a higher level of training and will thus hopefully remove some of the current issues around bad installations. Installers would be foolish not to receive the appropriate training and may be left behind if they do not invest in CO2”.
The CO2 Cold Chain units work well for both refrigerated and freezer showcases, as well as walk-in freezers and cold rooms. An ideal solution suited to provide refrigeration within the restaurant and hotel sectors.
The Panasonic CO2 range available in the UK currently has both 2kW and 15kW condensing units where the larger units can also work together if a larger capacity is required to provide 30kW. The range has been
Mervin Chumun of Hawco highlighted to attendees, “Hawco has access to the complete package for installing the Panasonic CO2 range, whereby we are currently offering free commissioning plus support to help with compliance to ensure the units are correctly installed. Furthermore, Hawco are able to supply evaporators with compatible controllers for a complete system.”
The team at Hawco have built an enviable reputation across the UK for their knowledge and expertise in the commercial refrigeration sector. The team offer design and in-depth product knowledge, helping customers to improve efficiency, minimise energy consumption and move to lower GWP refrigerants. The Panasonic range of CO2 condensing units feature a highly efficient two-stage rotary compressor, unique to the Panasonic units (covered by a five-year warranty). The units are compact in size, light weight and have low noise levels, making this solution ideal for small supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations. If you would like to attend a future training course or for more information on the range, please visit www.aircon.panasonic.eu or www.hawco.co.uk/co2. developer-update.co.uk

BAN ON FOSSIL FUEL HEATING TO IMPACT NEW HOMES FROM 2025 Last year the Government announced that it had introduced a new consultation to set out its plans for the Future Homes Standard. This includes options to increase the energy efficiency requirements for new homes from 2020. The aim of the new standard is to bring all of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, a target seen as one of the most ambitious in the world. New and existing homes account for 21% of emissions, and despite recent efforts to lower those emissions much more still has to be done. With climate change now a major crisis and coinciding with the release of the CCC (Climate Change Committee) report last year, underfloor heating expert Wunda Group is raising awareness about what the standard means and how it’s over floor heating solution can help homes comply. As part of the UK’s journey to the 2050 target, the Government has committed to bringing in its Future Homes Standard in 2025, and anticipates that an average home built using the new guidelines will have 75-80% less carbon emissions than one built using the current energy efficiency requirements. It is expected that this will be achieved through very high fabric standards and a low carbon heating system. The standard was created to address the need to ban fossil fuel heating systems, such as gas boilers, from new homes by 2025 and how vital it is to replace them with low carbon heating systems. This means a new home built to the Future Homes Standard might also be fitted with triple glazing and walls, floors and roofs that significantly limit heat loss. Chapter 2 of the Future Homes Standard discusses how the roll out of low carbon heating systems will lead to world-leading levels of energy developer-update.co.uk
efficiency. An excellent example of a sustainable heating system is Wundatherm, Wunda Group’s leading underfloor heating product. Compatible with sustainable heat pumps, solar panels or any existing gas/oil boilers, the Wundatherm underfloor heating system can run at temperatures as low as 35°C and can be laid by any competent tradesmen including builders, carpenters and tilers. Once installed, Wundatherm only requires a plumber to connect the system to the heat source and an electrician to fit the simple controls, and is designed with a ‘fit and forget’ reputation that is reliable, durable, maintenance-free and future-proof. Wundatherm is a new Rapid Response® system that’s extremely durable, incredibly easy to install and eliminates mess and drying time without the need to dig up floors. The lightweight low profile boards are just 16 or 20mm thick, heat up in minutes and are suitable for any floor finish including carpet, vinyl, Karndean, Amtico, laminate, wood, ceramic and stone tiles. Once installed, floor heating pipe is laid into the preformed grooves in the boards and the system is ready for immediate use. Wundatherm is extremely affordable and is virtually maintenance-free with a lifetime guarantee. Wundatherm consists of pre-formed aluminium coated boards that deliver rapid response heating and are bonded instantly to the floor with spray adhesive. Once in place, high output 16mm floor heating pipe is laid into the pre-formed grooves in the boards, looping around to a heating manifold, with up to 150 sq. metres taking two people just two days to install. The Wundatherm system takes minutes to reach operating
temperature, unlike screed which takes up to 48 hours, and creates a comfortable heat as the boards come factory fitted with thick aluminium for fast heat transmission and the continuous leak-proof pipes carry a lifetime guarantee. To complement the whole system, there is a range of matched traditional hard-wired thermostats, as well as wireless and smart controls via an app on mobile devices to offer users complete remote control of the system.
33
The UK needs to help the housing industry to be able to deliver in 2025, so by implementing an achievable change to the current energy efficiency standards in 2020, the economy is a step closer to making new homes more energy efficient and future-proof in readiness for low carbon heating systems. Wunda prides itself on first class quality and customer service, providing free technical support
six days a week, and provides the specialist service of detailed layout plans for all bespoke systems free of charge to trade customers. With these layout plans to hand, tradesmen can have complete confidence in laying the boards and installing the Wundatherm system.

38 The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon is a vibrant hub detailing the stories of the people and landscapes of North Devon. The brick building dates back to 1872, and was bought in 1887 by William Rock to house the North Devon Athenaeum, before the District Council purchased the property in 1988 and it became the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon.
P latform lift enables access for museum extension Bristol based architects, Ferguson Mann, were designing a two storey extension to the museum and needed a cost effective public access solution to enable visitors to see the upper floor exhibits and meeting rooms. After researching the market, the client was impressed by the Optimum 100 platform lift from Ability Lifts. The unit offered an extra wide platform of 1220mm, with an impressive lifting capacity of 500kg whilst offering a low power consumption and competitive running costs. After being shown an installed unit, the architects agreed, and an Optimum 100 was specified for the job. Devon Contractors of Exeter secured the main contract for the works, and placed the order. Ability Lifts worked with the architects and the main contractor to establish the final finishes and ensure that the builders work for the lift was carried out smoothly and on plan. The lift was specified with colour contrasting glazed doors and automatic openers, whilst a grey coin pattern flooring gives a durable finish on the platform. The unit was manufactured in a larger-than-standard width to give a footprint of 1350mm x 1560mm and an internal platform of 1220mm x 1480mm. The unit comes with a warranty of 12 months parts and labour, 5 years on motor and gearbox and 10 years on drive chains, to give trouble-free ownership for many years to come.
