HYDROGEN HEATING FROM RINNAI

Decarbonisation and NetZero ambitions are prominent issues in global political agendas, forcing debate and discussion that focuses on potential future energy resources. Throughout these dialogues, hydrogen has been identified as a potential energy source for the global mass market. The applications for hydrogen are many: industrial process, vehicles and building stock are key areas for deployment. A key reason in hydrogen’s identification as a mass market energy solution focuses on hydrogen’s clean content. Hydrogen is environmentally benign and therefore releases no CO₂ emissions. Decarbonizing the industrial sector is vital in cutting heavy emission releases. This includes the steel and chemical industries, both of which are responsible for large CO₂ emissions. The traff ic sector believes hydrogen can deliver reduced emissions whilst powering long haul vehicles and local public transport – note the recent London buses example. Hydrogen is also likely to be integral in domestic energy provision. Future energy mixes of green, cleaner gasses containing hydrogen blends are considered viable replacements of fossil fuels. HYDROGEN HEATING FROM RINNAI Chris Goggin maps out his company’s view and adaption to the changing marketplace in the heating and hot water arena on the road to NetZero avenues for hydrogen deployment, transfer and consumption to be ma de possible. The construction of hydrogen clusters will supply local residential and commercial buildings with locally sourced hydrogen. The Hynet Northwest programme has made considerable advancements in this area. One consideration is to link these clusters to the central transmission network to supply the whole of the UK. Elsewhere away f rom the UK, there has been development of a comprehensive hydrogen strategy aiming to create a carbon neutral Europe. To further the development of carbon neutrality across Europe, the ‘European Clean Hydrogen Alliance’ an organization comprised of policy makers along the entire hydrogen value chain has been founded. This alliance concentrates on providing viable t e c h n o l o g i e s , i n v e s t m e n t opportunities and political advice which aims to form political decision making on cleaner energies. Germany has advanced preparations towards a hydrogen economy

with a detailed national hydrogen strategy set up in 2020. The Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal and Norway have also developed their respective national hydrogen strategies. UK recognition of a hydrogen economy is also advanced and a national hydrogen strategy is set to be released soon. As a result, appliance manufacturers are preparing to adapt their products to accept cleaner gasses. To be prepared for a changing technological horizon, Rinnai is assisting future standards for both blends and 100% hydrogen. Hydrogen undoubtedly maintains the potential to be a cornerstone of the European energy transition. For hydrogen to become Europe’s fuel of choice, hydrogen must be produced CO₂-free and based on renewable energies, as so called “green” hydrogen. To date, no large quantities of green hydrogen have been produced, limiting hydrogen’s mass market potential.

Production capacities must be created, as well as pipeline and distribution networks; transport and storage facilities. In addition, uniform technical standards remain to be defined. At present there are no harmonised standards fo r t h e p e rce n t a g e o f hydrogen that may be added to existing gas grids. The percentage varies between zero and ten percent across European countries. European harmonisation is a long-term undertaking. There are two issues which demand attention within the heating market. The first issue which requires research and data gathering centres on the proposed dispersal of a 20% hydrogen mixture into the national gas grid. The second point of focus is the development of hydrogen as a CO₂-free fuel by 2030 - 2050. Additional tests to collect insights into future hydrogen gas blending rates are being carried out by gas utility companies in the UK, Germany and The Netherlands.

In anticipation of a future transition to hydrogen, Rinnai’s commercial range of water h ea te r s h ave u n d e r t a ke n a n d p a s s e d a s e ri e s o f rigorous verif ication tests that demonstrate their ability to accept hydrogen fuel gas blends of 30%. Rinnai is also positioning future products to receive CO₂-free pure hydrogen. Testing has begun on Rinnai’s Next-gen 100% hydrogen gas ready appliances. Pete Seddon, Technical team leader at Rinnai UK explains further: “The specif ication of hydrogen differs from natural gas, meaning that flame sensing devices will need modif ication, along with some other components. The temperature within the appliance is very similar however, meaning that durability and reliability won’t change. Other positive elements associated with hydrogen within appliance combustion is that the heaters can be constructed in such a way that they are the same size as natural gas variants, simplifying appliance replacement and

maintaining continuity. The Wobbe index for methane and hydrogen is also very similar, whilst the eff iciency of the appliances is also like that of natural gas condensing variants.” The UK hydrogen strategy will be released alongside the Heat in Buildings strategy, which is expected to mandate hydrogen ready equipment. The growth of UK hydrogen clusters continues at pace and hydrogen blending is expected in the short term. Rinnai is well placed to deal with any current and future heating requirements and endeavours to support customers and par tners throughout Rinnai’s future hydrogen decarbonisation pathway.

The construction industry is full of a variety of different trades, from civil engineers to plumbers to electricians. And, of course, painters and decorators are often last – but not least – on the job, putting the finishing touches to a project.

his got us thinking. How long did it take to put the f inishing touches on the most iconic buildings in the world? Here, we cover how long it took to paint some of the world’s most renowned buildings.

The Sistine Chapel The Sistine Chapel is in the unique position of not only being one of the most recognisable landmarks on the planet but also as the home of the most famous ceiling, and developer-update.co.uk

arguably the most famous painting, in the world. Michelangelo’s masterpiece, which features his most famous piece of work, The Creation of Adam, spans over 3,600 feet of ceiling and wall. It’s easy to see why it took the artist four years to complete the whole artwork! It was certainly worth it – it’s considered one of the most significant pieces of art in history. Originally, Michelangelo was reluctant to agree to the

project because he primarily plied his trade as a sculptor, but Pope Julius II wouldn’t take no for an answer. The artist compromised with the Pope, who originally wanted the painting to feature the 12 Apostles, and instead created nine scenes from the Book of Genesis. No wonder it took four years to finish off this stunning piece of history! The art has been restored a number of times in the hundreds of years since it was first painted. A 1566 renovation saw the work repainted by Domenico Carnevale which, for years, remained undetected. Annibale Mazzuoli and his son undertook a further three-year restoration mission between 1710 and 1713, which included repainting some of the work,

and there have been multiple smaller-scale maintenance projects in the 1980s and 1990s. While not quite as intensive as the original completion of the painting, it takes quite some work to preserve!

The Eiffel Tower The quintessential French monument gets repainted more than you’d think – on average, every seven years! Made from wrought iron, the tower must be maintained with fresh coats of paint frequently so the metal doesn’t corrode. In order to complete this vital task, painters first must strip the tower, clean it, and rustproof it before painting. At 324m tall (1,063 ft), that’s a lot of puddle iron to treat and then paint.

The tower has been many different colours over the years, starting off with “Venice red” paint in its early years before transitioning to reddishbrown, ochre brown, and yellow-brown, before the “Eiffel Tower brown” we all know today was settled on. Jotun has been the paint supplier of choice for a few years now, and it was recently announced that the tower’s colour will once again change. For the 2024 Olympic Games, the tower will be repainted in a golden colour, which more closely reflects Gustave Eiffel’s vision for his work.

In each repainting, approximately 60 tonnes of paint are used by 50 painters trained in working at great heights to paint a total surface of 250,000m². Even with so many painters on the job, the course of painting the tower can take between 18 months and three years. This is because the tower can’t be painted if it’s wet or too cold.

It’s estimated that th e repainting of the White House in 2019 took a week, with the West Wing alone needing around 1,363 litres of paint. It can take up to 30 coats of paint to effectively rejuvenate the historical building, giving you an idea of the magnitude of the project!

The White House As its name states, the US presidential residence is famed for its bold white colour. This requires a lot of upkeep, receiving a new coat of paint every four to six years. It’s estimated that around 2,591

GOOD MANAGEMENT IS KEY TO A ROOF’S LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE By Kevin O’Connell at IKO Group Dependent on the products and materials used, a flat roof’s waterproofing should last between 20 and 40 years. Good maintenance will also contribute to its performance and longevity. But which proactive steps need to be taken when a waterproofing system reaches the end of its serviceable life? Roofing purpose When deciding on a waterproof ing system for a flat roof application, it’s important to consider what it’s meant to do. An appropriately-designed and correctly-installed solution will prevent a prevalence of standing water, which in-turn will protect the structural integrity of the building itself. Water carries immense weight and when left to pond, it could lead to the breakdown of the roof’s coating which will leave the roof susceptible to the UV degradation. As an example of the immense strain it can bring to bear, 1mm of water per m2 equates to 1kg. Therefore, that same level of water across a 5mm x 30m2 surface would be akin to two adults standing on a roof. Long-standing water can also promote vegetation growth in the form of plants and fungi; wildlife that can penetrate a flat roof’s surface and cause untold damage to the building itself. As well as keeping a roof dry, a good waterproofing system should ensure it achieves regulatory levels of thermal performance. In poorly insulated homes, roofs account for 25% of a building’s heat loss. It is crucial, therefore, that the insulation supplied as part of a build-up offers an effective barrier to energy escape whilst being of suitable thickness to prevent the obstruction of door and window thresholds. Its design should also take into account roofs with plant installations, walkways and safety features such as guardrails and hatch systems. Monitor to prevent major repairs Good management can be achieved by gaining an understanding of your roof stock. Is it old or is it new? Are there other plans for the building that could impact the roof? New windows may provide less ventilation than old ones; therefore will an extension be required to facilitate such an installation? Prevention is better than cure, a saying that is particularly pertinent to roof ing management. Neglecting to act upon tell-tale signs of a roof’s degradation can transform a seemingly minor maintenance issue into a major repair project that potentially comes at great expense to a property owner in order to keep it weathertight and its occupants safe. This worst-case scenario can be avoided by keeping a periodical look-out for signs developer-update.co.uk

of natural wear and tear which indicate a roof’s performance is in danger of being compromised. These visual sirens might include elements such as lap joints becoming loose or in the case of an asphalt roof, the appearance of surface lumps and creases, or even blocked outlets. Getting the balance right In terms of appropriate waterproof specification for flat roofs, property owners must strike a balance between the ‘nice’ to have, with the ‘need’ to have. To ensure this thin line is more easily navigated, it’s important to decide upon a level of spending by drawing up a budget. This should take into account future plans for the roof asset and the building itself. HISTORIC ENGLAND LEAD BY EXAMPLE AND SPECIFY STELLA ROOFLIGHT

Historic England (formerly known as English Heritage) has specified and installed a Stella bespoke conservation rooflight at their York Regional Office.

As part of a programme of works, which included several fire safety improvements throughout the building, Stella was approached by specialist heritage surveyors, Smith & Garratt to design a bespoke conservation rooflight. The design of which would need to provide suitable ventilation for the building’s communal stairwell. Aside from the design functionality, the rooflight would also need to satisfy strict Conservation requirements, as the building is deemed of significant historic and architectural interest. As all Stella rooflights incorporate slender steel frames, which sit flush within the roofline, they were the ideal choice for maintaining the heritage of the building. developer-update.co.uk

The Stella team worked closely with Smith & Garratt and specialist contractors CG Building & Restoration Ltd on an innovative design that would meet the approval of Historic England and the Planning committee. Stella Rooflight Director, Paul Trace, said: “When Historic England approached us to help obtain planning permission, which had previously been rejected, for the refurbishment works at the head office, we were only too happy to help. We came up with a unique rooflight design with electrically actuated central openings that would provide the solution they were looking for, while at the same time satisfying the planners.” The 2185mm (w) x 2050mm (h) rooflight consisted of four

Doors & Windows 31 casements, of which, the two centre side hung opening panes are electronically operated by two pairs of high performance chain actuators and designed to open out 90 degrees to provide the required ventilation. The two remaining side panes were of a fixed design and were at the same level as the opening casements; which was an important detail in satisfying the planning requirement. As with all Stella rooflights the frame was manufactured using marine grade 316 stainless steel, with a C5 coastal powder coating to protect against rust and prolong the lifespan of the rooflight. A bespoke handmade

hardwood liner provided a stunning internal finish. A high specification glazing consisted of a BioClean Natura Self-Clean and Solar Control outer pane with a black warm edge spacer (Argon Gas), and a Planitherm One Low E inner pane. Due to the considerable size and weight of the rooflight, CG Building carefully craned the rooflights into position and fixed them into place, finishing the job using a pre-formed lead flashing kit provided by Stella Rooflight. Historic England’s head office is situated at 37 Tanner Row in the Micklegate Ward of York

city centre. The impressive fivestorey, end-of-terrace red brick building is Grade II Listed and lies within a Conservation Area. Originally built as a railway hotel in the 1850s, originally ‘The George Hotel’, latterly ‘The North Eastern’, the property today serves as the modern offices of Historic England – the Government body that helps people care for and enjoy England’s historic environment.
