Welcome to the 2009 festive Christmas edition of Cruise Ahoy, jam packed full of gifts and bonus offers and some really special competitions – not forgetting some more amazing cruise deals for you to turn your mind to some sunshine as the nights become darker and longer and the weather progressively worse – don’t you just love England?!!! November has been yet another exciting month at Jetline – I attended World Travel Market earlier in the month – the biggest annual travel convention in the UK and made some more fantastic contacts with suppliers to be able to offer you even more great deals in 2010. I’m looking forward to attending the launch of the world’s newest, largest and most exciting cruise ship in the world, Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas next week, watch out for my reports coming soon. My life is so tough! I really hope you are looking forward to Christmas and I am so excited to bring you lots of bonus goodies and treats, along with all the latest news from the world of cruising. Don’t miss some important information along the way: frequently asked questions and directions on how to book free car parking in Southampton if you have booked a Royal Caribbean Independence cruise. Also apply to become a roving reporter, win a Christmas hamper, my special Christmas bauble offer and more!!! As always, Cruise Ahoy is also filled with fantastic exclusive cruise holiday deals we’ve pulled together just for you. There is a little teaser about our soon to be launched loyalty scheme and if you’re thinking about booking a cruise in the New Year pre register now for all the forthcoming offers and we’ll take all the work off your hands. I’m taking the team here at Jetline HQ out on a Christmas party next week to let their hair down and to say thank you for all their hard work throughout 2009 – maybe, just maybe there will be some photos to follow! So all that remains for me to say is a very Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year to each and every one of you and I really look forward to continuing to help you with your cruise holiday requirements in 2010.
Happy Christmas!

Transatlantic Cruising Why you should try it! by Martin Tanner
New York
The reaction of many people when confronted by a Transatlantic cruise is ‘How boring’ or ‘Why on earth would you want to do that?’. Having now notched up 3 Transatlantic crossings and looking forward to my fourth one next year – I wanted to put the case across for how marvellous this type of cruise can be.
6
WHO ARE THEY SUITABLE FOR? If you want a regular cruise with ports of call or badly suffer from the effects of motion – then these cruises are probably not for you. These cruises are ideal for those of you who have cruised lots of times and are looking for something different. They are also perfect for people who lead busy lives in the work or home environment and want to totally relax without distraction and let someone else do all the work.
WESTBOUND: Travel to the States in Style. Each day at sea is 25 hours long and arrive refreshed in tune with local time. That is without the jet lag - wanting to go to sleep 5 hours before everyone else and waking up in the early hours of the morning.
Transatlantic cruises should be referred to as Transatlantic Crossings. Then the whole meaning of Transatlantic completely changes. A CROSSING is a means to get from one side of the Atlantic to the other as part of a greater holiday experience in North America instead of flying.
PLUS: The potential to shop and buy things that you would not normally buy because of the flight home is irresistible. No restrictive luggage weight allowances and much less chance of breakages if your purchases are not being thrown into the hold of an aircraft or squeezed into the overhead storage.
For this reason Transatlantic Crossings are also ideal for people who like their land based holidays but want to try out the cruise experience.
ON A TYPICAL CRUISE: For me as an experienced cruiser – my most pleasurable days on a typical Caribbean or Med cruise are the ones at sea. Because the chance to visit a whole range of exotic ports is accompanied with:
EASTBOUND: Enhance your holiday experience with the knowledge that you have not got to go to the airport, through all that security and board a cramped and impatient flight overnight back to the UK. Why end your hard earned holiday in this way when you can turn this horrible end journey on the flight into the most comfortable and relaxing journey home possible?
• Shall we book any excursions? • Shall we get off and do our own thing? • Where can I get some local currency? • Let’s get back to the ship before the lunch time buffet closes. • Will I see everything I should see at this or that port of call? • How long will the Queue be to get off and back on? Hence the reason why I much prefer the days at sea and find that a Transatlantic cruise is my favourite cruise option for uninterrupted relaxation. ON A TYPICAL BEACH HOLIDAY: For many beach goers the intention is to relax and do absolutely nothing. There is always the vague promise of taking time out to see something of the local area. Ultimately many people find their favourite spot beside the pool or umbrella on the beach and God forgive anyone who takes that spot before they get there !!! Generally they end up having spent a week or two completely relaxing, being lazy and having seen nothing of the local area. If you are one of these then you will love a Transatlantic Crossing.

If you’re considering a complete escape, you don’t need to look much further than the unspoilt waters and wilderness of the ‘Great Land’ of Alaska where you can marvel at glistening glaciers and magnificent mountainscapes. With its unique wildlife, fascinating gold rush past and surprisingly mild climate, Alaska really does make the holiday of a lifetime. Alaska is the largest state in the USA, a sparsely populated land of immense natural beauty, diverse wildlife and breathtaking adventure. At one-fifth the size of the lower 48 states, Alaska has 3 million lakes, over 3,000 rivers, 17 of the USA’s 20 highest peaks, 100,000 glaciers and 15 national parks, preserves and monuments. Soaring snow-covered peaks, glaciers and fjords, bears, moose, salmon-filled rivers and the shrill call of eagles echo the grandeur of this state, which offers an experience like nowhere else on earth.
is a unique place rich in history & natural beauty and exploring this magnificent destination from the luxury of a cruise ship, coupled with a land based tour is the ideal package.
No matter if you’re on the rocky shoreline, in the rolling countryside, or on a towering mountain, Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is both a popular tourist destination and the centre of commerce and transportation for the region; 40% of the state’s population lives there. Lake Hood is home to the world’s largest seaplane base, the main form of transport in Alaska.

revolutionary new sites and museums. Some of the facilities are top-notch establishments technologically, while others continue to provide an authentic look at the area’s ancient past, and have remained unchanged for decades. Alaskans have a strong sense of culture, and they want to stay faithful to the traditions of their ancestors. You don’t have to go looking for breathtaking scenery in Anchorage; it is everywhere, and will surprise you at every turn. The horizon is glorious, and the mountains and ocean create magnificent backdrops. Seventy-five miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles in area, the Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most impressive, a 300-foot wall of ice rising sheer and jagged from the ocean. It has been thickening and advancing toward the Gulf of Alaska since it was first mapped by the International Boundary Commission in 1895. This is in stark contrast with most glaciers, which have thinned and retreated during the last century. The Inside Passage gives the most complete overview of the communities

and surrounding wilderness preserves and parks in Southeast Alaska. Almost every popular small town in Southeast Alaska will be a part of an Inside Passage itinerary, introducing you to Alaska’s state capital - Juneau - a Norwegian fishing village, a native town built on the timber industry, the gold rush of 1898, and the historic Russian capital of Sitka. The level of variety and charm within the Inside Passage will leave you never knowing what to expect in the next port of call, each with its own charm, character and history. Some destinations can only be visited by a small ship, giving you a real look at these wilderness towns. While not in port, you can visit some of the most pristine and dramatic wilderness areas and parks, such as Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Misty Fjords National Monument, and Tracy Arm Wilderness Area. These are amongst the most dramatic locations you can explore in southeast Alaska, offering the most dramatic views of glaciers and sheer granite walls reaching 3,000 feet out of the water.
Many photographic opportunities will exist in the Inside Passage. It is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and you have opportunities to spot mountain goats, bears, whales, porpoise, sea otters, dolphin, and moose. While visiting many of these ports, there are very special opportunities to take advantage of including kayaking, hiking, biking, visits to museums and native cultural centers, flight seeing, river rafting, train rides, dog mushing and ice climbing and street walks. Fairbanks, Alaska’s second-largest city, situated at the northern end of the Alaska Highway, is a trade and transportation centre for the Interior and Far North regions, and gateway to the state’s real frontier. From mid-May through to July, visitors can enjoy more than 20 hours of sunlight a day, but in winter the short days are mostly a pink-and-indigo twilight with about four hours of real daylight. So if all this has whetted your appetite for an Alaskan adventure, call one of our Jetline cruise specialists right now to find out more about some of our great holidays with Princess, Holland America & Celebrity Cruises. 9
Cruise Industry News Most cruise lines spend December preparing for the busy booking period ahead in January. Many have released details of new price programmes in December where the trend is to increase prices. The level of bookings and period of time in advance when people book constantly surprise us. We have recently seen increases in airline fares and a trend to reduce flying capacity / frequency of flights. All of this has meant that prices are going up and availability is going down! Here at Jetline Cruise we are dedicated to continue to bringing you the best possible deals so despite any fluctuating prices you can rest assured our Cruise Specialists will find you the lowest price available.

Disney to base Dream ship in Barcelona Disney Cruise Line is targeting the UK market to lead its European growth ahead of basing one of its ships in the region for the next two summers. Speaking as the company unveiled details of its new ship Disney Dream (pictured), which launches in 2011, the line’s chief executive Tom Wolber stressed that the main challenge was the lack of awareness among UK consumers. “People like Disney, but they have no idea that Disney has a cruise line and we have never marketed it in the UK because we only had two ships,” he explained. But this is changing from early next year when the line’s first major marketing campaign kicks in to promote Disney Magic’s five-month European season, when it will operate four 12-night Baltic sailings from Dover and a series of cruises from Barcelona. A Kids Sail Free offer giving a free child place for every fare-paying adult is already running and the company is planning more promotions for the New Year, including plans to boost trade training and familiarisation trips. Wolber expects Americans to account for most of the passengers on Disney’s European sailings - up to 90% - but he said UK demand for both the Baltic and Mediterranean cruises “had not disappointed” and said advance bookings for the Baltic were going “exceedingly well”. “We have to start somewhere in Europe and the UK market has a strong affinity with Disney and Florida, and it is the biggest cruise market in Europe,” he added. Call Jetline now to find out more about the Kids Sail Free offer and other promotions! 10
‘Strictly Come Dancing’ inspires P&O Contest Following the popularity of TV show Strictly Come Dancing, a search has started for a couple to dance as part of the naming ceremony for P&O Cruises’ new ship Azura. The cruiseline will be hunting for the UK’s top dancers during their forthcoming dancing at sea competition. The initiative follows Thomson Cruises running dancing contests on board its ships which proved to be highly popular with their guests who have been inspired by the recent trend back towards Ballroom and Latin dancing. The P&O Cruises’ competition will be held on 12 winter cruises as ballroom dancing becomes one of Britain’s most popular pastimes and the winning couple from each cruise will be invited to a semi final in Southampton on April 9, 2010. Six couples will then get an exclusive tour of the ship and stay on board for the final the following day. The ultimate winning couple will stay on for the VIP naming ceremony on April 10 and be invited to be part of the magical celebrations as Azura enters service. The dance competition will be held on the following cruises: Ventura Oceana: N925A E928, N929A E931 Arcadia Aurora: J919 R917, J922 R920 Oriana Artemis: X918 P922, X920 P925 Call one of our Cruise Specialists at Jetline today to book and secure your place onboard and don’t forget to pack your dancing shoes!

The Most Famous Oceanliners in the World
December 2007 saw a new Queen join the Cunard fleet, Queen Victoria, the second largest Cunarder ever built. Distinguished by her red and black livery, Queen Victoria is a true Cunarder proudly upholding their famous heritage and traditions. She was ceremoniously named, by royalty, in her home port of Southampton on 10 December 2007. Her interiors are warmly reminiscent of a more gracious era with a dramatic three-tiered Grand Lobby and sumptuous marbles, woods, plush carpets, rich fabrics and soft furnishings that simply exude elegance.
A
s you embark, you’ll encounter the dramatic three-tier Grand Lobby, whose magnificent staircase and eye-catching artwork offers a lavish taste of life aboard. Walk around the ship and you’ll see elaborate chandeliers adorn the Queens Room double height ceiling to enhance its calm grandeur. The Winter Garden is all light and relaxation, very much colonial in tone, with decked floors and leafy foliage – its glass roof even opens to the warm breeze. Elegant and stylish, every public room will create a unique ambience where Cunard’s renowned White Star Service™ will continue to surpass expectations.

9 night cruises aboard MS Zuiderdam ADD ON 2 Extra Nights in Vancouver and Rockies Train from £249pp
Ssshh – Don’t tell everyone !!!
With Holland America Line – it is necessary to book early because the American market recognise it as THE premium 5 cruising brand enjoying a luxurious and sophisticated experience. Their modern fleet of cruise ships are spacious, have less passengers onboard relative to their size and are tastefully decorated with works of art and fresh flowers throughout. This company oozes service, quality and style – aimed at the more select and discerning cruiser. The Zuiderdam is our favourite class of ship. These wonderful Vista class ships are just over 80,000 tonnes and carry less than 2000 passengers. The teak decking around the pool areas are one of the many attributes which set these ships apart from others. The Lido pool area has a retractable canopy ideal for cooler climates – whilst the sea view pool area at the back of the ship is perfect for a farewell drink to watch your last port of call fade into the distance.

Travel in style and make the journey across the Atlantic one of the most pleasurable travel experiences you can do. The great thing about these holidays is that it combines absolute relaxation and escapism with the high energy frenzy of New York – mixing both shopping and sightseeing together. THE SHOPPING: There is no better place to shop than in New York. Prices when converted to £ Sterling are much cheaper and there are lots of great stores selling goods which you would not find in the UK. A pair of trendy Levis would cost on average in the Uk around £60 - Go to the Levis store on Lexington Ave (opposite Bloomingdales) and you get the pick or every size, colour and style imaginable for $50 or £31. Crate & Barrel On Madison Ave and Pottery Barn on Lexington & 59th are superb home wares stores with amazing stuff which you can’t help but want! You must visit Tiffanys on 5th Ave and the huge underground Apple Mac I-Pod store close by next to Central Park. For Fashionistas – load up with bargains at Abercrombie & Fitch and Banana Republic on 5th Ave. Jimmy Choo, Armani, Calvin Klein and a whole host of designer stores can be found nearby. For the Budget conscious Old Navy on 34th St opposite Macy’s is a must – I can guarantee you will buy at least a t-shirt there. Daffy’s store also opposite Macys is a bargain for designer underwear. Then of course there is Macy’s Dept Store just down the road from the Empire State Building and great for lunch! THE VOYAGE: There is a lot to occupy your time on board: Late mornings in bed with room service to get you going. A leisurely breakfast, a stroll on deck and perhaps a lecture from one of the guest speakers on board. Look out for the historic wall murals dotted around the ship depicting the history of Cunard. The only Planetarium at sea makes for a great afternoon

NORWAY, SCANDINAVIA & RUSSIA 11 night cruises from the UK aboard MSC Opera NO NEED TO FLY CRUISE FROM DOVER
KIDS GO FREE*
FREE CAR PARKING IN DOVER
No need to fly - cruise from Dover. Unlike many Scandinavian cruises the MSC itineraries from Dover tend to sell quickly each year as they are competitively priced compared other cruise lines. With FREE car parking and FREE kids places - these offers are unbeatable. We particularly like these itineraries as all three of include Amsterdam which is sadly not included on many Northern Europe itineraries. AMSTERDAM: The heart of Amsterdam and is only a 5-10 minute walk from the cruise terminal. Amsterdam city centre is contained within a series of interconnected concentric canal rings and so its great to explore the city by boat. Whilst in Amsterdam you must visit the red light district (of course just for a topic of conversation on your cruise), Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and the Magere Brug for an iconic shot of the double leaf Dutch draw bridge connecting both sides of the River Amstel. The MSC Opera is a friendly ship at just under 60,000 tonnes with a good range of facilities including several entertainment lounges, theatre, casino, spa, 2 swimming pools, 3 restaurants and even an English pub. After several years of operating cruises from Dover MSC have enhanced the choice of food on board to specifically to cater for the UK market.
