Meet the Jetline team This months edition we are pleased to introduce another two valued members of our team – Gemma Medden and Justin Bond. Below you can find out a little more about them. Name:

Gemma Medden Copywriter Age: A lady never tells, oh all right 29 Married: Last time I checked Children: Darcey (2), husband (32) and a fat, grumpy cat (7) Cruise ships sailed on: None (will have to speak to my boss about this) Favourite cruise line: Erm, see above Hobbies: Reading, tidying up after family, running

Position:

Hi my name is Gemma and I have worked for Jetline for 18 months now. I have previously worked predominantly in a sales environment from the age of 16, selling everything from bathroom shower screens to catering equipment but made a career detour following the birth of my daughter a couple of years ago. I have always been a keen writer and after meeting Ian through my parents who are neighbours of his, started work for Jetline writing material for the companies websites and this beautiful magazine which you are reading now!

Name: Position: Age: Married or kids:

Justin Bond Cruise Specialist 25 No

Cruise ships sailed on: RCI Explorer of the Seas, Celebrity Century, Costa Fortuna, P&O Oceana, Ocean Village 2 Favourite cruise line: RCI Howzit...my name is Bond, Justin Bond I am delighted to be onboard with jetline Cruises as their newest Cruise Specialist. I came over to the UK 6 years ago from my home country of South Africa and have been working as a cruise specialist since then. Having previously worked with Ian, Martin and a number of key members of the Jetline Cruises team, I am relishing the chance to do so again, at a fantastic company like Jetline Cruises. You will be hard pushed to find an individual in this industry with the knowledge and passion that I have for the cruise product, and its customers I am a regular cruise passenger myself and love the style of cruising offered by

I adore going on holidays so writing about cruises has been an interesting new subject for me. I must admit, I have never previously considered cruising for a holiday but fast-forwarding 18 months I now am eager to try one for myself. I have been absolutely blown away by the sheer choice of cruises on offer. The new ships entering the market are truly out of this world and the idea of visiting lots of destinations in one holiday is extremely appealing to me. Plus with a dynamite daughter to amuse, the children’s activities on board most ships sound a great option. Ian is a great boss to work for and indeed the only boss who doesn’t mind me scoffing chocolate at my PC and wearing pj’s to work (don’t worry, I work from home!) The whole team are always up for a laugh and I have been lucky enough to experience the joys of many of my colleagues singing skills at karaoke. For the best cruise advice and the cheapest deals around I believe there are no better people to speak to (although there jokes are pretty bad I must admit). Happy cruising and I hope you enjoy the magazine! Gemma

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and P&O to name a few of my personal favorites. I consider myself to be a well travelled individual, as you would probably guess, and since leaving my home country, I am ticking off destinations all over the world. If you want a cruise and stay in the United States, I can tailor the package to suit your needs, if you really want to visit the Far East, but are unsure of what line or destination would suit you best, then please, give me the opportunity to share my extensive knowledge with you For some of you, I know that you may be just as well travelled, and your choice of holiday isn’t just about the destinations you visit, but about the ship itself, and the facilities on offer onboard. Some prefer the intimacy of a smaller ship, and others like the liveliness of the larger, American style ships, whatever you want, there is a cruise out there that will suit you perfectly, and I can find it for you I look forward to speaking to you, and sharing in the making of what should be a very special Cruise experience. Change of plan for Celebrity Century Celebrity Cruises have announced the redeployment of Celebrity Century to the Mediterranean next summer. The new sailings replace the previously announced series of four and five night cruises from Miami between May and October 2010. Dan Hanrahan, Celebrity Cruises President, said: “Celebrity Century’s four and five-night Caribbean cruises are very popular, but discussions with our travel partners and guests in North America and Europe indicated even stronger demand for the ship in Europe next summer.” From November 2009 until early May 2010 Celebrity Century will continue to sail four and five night Caribbean cruises and as a prelude to its European season will be sailing on a 14 night transatlantic cruise from Miami on 20 May 2010, calling in at Ponta Delgada (Azores), Lisbon, Seville, and Malaga, before porting in Barcelona. Arriving on 3 June 2010 Celebrity Century will begin a series of 12-night, roundtrip Mediterranean cruises. Ports of call on the new sailings include Cannes, Nice, Provence, Sicily Rome, Venice, Ephesus, Athens and Dubrovnik. Guests with confirmed bookings on the cancelled Caribbean sailings are being contacted with the option to switch to a seven-night sailing on Celebrity Solstice, subject to availability, in a similar category at the same price paid.

Famed marine life artist Wyland paints Ruby Princess swimming pool An unusual event took place as Ruby Princess approached Venice, with passengers aboard Princess Cruises latest ship being treated to an impromptu special live event as famed marine life artist Wyland painted the bottom of the ship’s Neptune swimming pool. Known worldwide for his unique works featuring sea animals, Wyland is aboard the ship for special art events and meet and greets with passengers. However, painting the ship’s pool was not on his original agenda. Ruby Princess Captain Tony Draper suggested the idea to the artist after being inspired by watching ship crew members painting the Princess “seawitch” logo on the bottom of the ship’s other main pool. Wyland agreed to paint the mother dolphin and her baby as a way to increase awareness for his conservation message. Guests on board were invited to follow along with a live top-deck event hosted by the ship’s cruise director, including live video of the painting in progress broadcast on Ruby Princess’ Movies Under the Stars poolside screen. “This is certainly one of the most unusual ways we’ve ever painted a pool,” said Jan Swartz, Princess executive vice president. “But it’s a wonderful way to work with Wyland to address our shared concern with the importance of marine conservation, and to give our passengers a unique experience as they witnessed a one-of-a-kind artwork taking shape.” Marine life artist Wyland is an accomplished painter, sculptor, photographer, writer and SCUBA diver. His non-profit Wyland Foundation has supported numerous conservation programs since 1993, including the monumental Whaling Wall mural project – and epic series of more than 100 life-size marine life murals that spans 14 countries on four continents and is viewed by an estimated 1 billion people every year. Wyland and Princess Cruises have a long-time association. Many Princess ships incorporate his sculptures in the swimming pool areas, and are featured in his latest book “100 Whaling Walls.” Wyland’s artwork is also featured in the ships’ onboard art galleries.

Comedy Club Concept to debut on new Carnival Dream Continuing to reinforce its reputation for offering the most diverse entertainment choices at sea, Carnival Cruise Line will introduce the line’s first comedy club on its new 130,000 ton Carnival Dream. The club will feature six comedy shows on four different nights during each voyage. The new 3,646-passenger Carnival Dream – the line’s largest ship – is set to debut Sept. 21, 2009. Presented in the 425-seat Burgundy Lounge, Carnival Dream’s comedy club will highlight a wide variety of comedians offering both family-friendly and adult-only performances each night. Six 35-minute shows will be presented nightly, with show times at 6, 7:15, 8:30, 9:45 and 11 p.m., and 12:15 a.m. The last two performances will be R-rated adult-only shows. Carnival Dream’s comedy club will showcase the talents of both the line’s established comedians and up-and-coming performers, many of whom have appeared on television specials and in comedy venues throughout the country. “Guests choose a Carnival vacation to relax, laugh and have a great time, and comedy shows are one of our most popular entertainment offerings,” said Roger Blum, Carnival’s vice president of cruise programming. “On the Carnival Dream there will be 24 performances during each voyage, providing guests multiple opportunities to enjoy a highly talented roster of comics providing endless laughs in a fun and entertaining environment.” The Comedy Club will be one of several entertainment options to feature on the newest ‘Fun Ship’. There will be an unparalleled mix of entertainment and activity choices from early in the morning to late at night. Offered for the first time on Carnival Dream, Ocean Plaza is a stunning indoor/outdoor café/live music venue with activities and entertainment planned from 9 a.m. until 1 a.m. Here, guests can relax with specialty coffees and sweets while enjoying a variety of live music, from rock and roll bands to a Latin trio, classical pianists, solo singers and more. Located on Promenade Deck 5, Ocean Plaza will also serve as the venue for activities ranging from scrapbooking classes and trivia contests to karaoke, and art, spa and photo seminars. Jugglers and magic shows also will be presented, while the Fun Force, Carnival’s energetic acrobatic troupe, will amaze guests with their high-flying antics. Carnival Dream debuts 11 September 2009 with three 12 night Grand Mediterranean cruises operating round-trip from Rome (Civitavecchia).

lively restaurant and nightlife scene. There are a diverse choice of active land options on offer in the Caribbean as well, including snorkelling and diving off The Indians & Treasure Island in BVI; diving off Saba; river rafting in Dominica; a catamaran trip to Mustique and a drive-in volcano on St. Lucia. Head of UK sales and marketing Ian Buckeridge said:“Our reservations department received lots of enquiries for 2010 even before our schedules went up on our website. “They will call not only at vibrant port cities for pre- and post-voyage visits, but also at small and exclusive seaside towns and villages where the large passenger ships cannot go.”

Interview with Peter Shanks President Cunard Line.

1

There are many cruise lines out there in the 5-star premium market. Why should guests choose Cunard over the others? Cunard has the oldest and most respected brand in cruising and the youngest and most modern fleet of any cruise line. Travelling on an ocean Liner brings not only a sense of being part of history, but also delivers a wonderful quality experience. Over 98% of our guests say they will return for a future voyage. There is something very special about a Cunard Liner experience.

2

2010 is going to be an exciting year with the launch of the Queen Elizabeth, what is going to differentiate her from the Queen Victoria? Queen Elizabeth will be a sister ship to Queen Victoria, but very much with her own personality. The look, feel and ambience on board will give a modern twist to art deco and a sense whereby both our regular guests and first time guests will immediately feel at home. New features includes a Britannia Club dining room, a fun Sports deck bringing back the age of bowls, croquet and paddle tennis and a new “Garden Lounge” enabling people to feel as though they are sitting at Kew Gardens. Everybody is very excited about her - and with the name Queen Elizabeth she will bring an extra special touch of excitement.

3

With the Queen Elizabeth selling so well when launched is there plans for another ship after this? With three Ocean Liners Cunard are well placed for the next few years with the opportunity for guests to choose from Transatlantics, Mediterranean voyages, Northern Europe voyages, Caribbean voyages and further afield voyages through Panama Canal, West Coast of USA and Hawaii. If you add in the two World Voyages then with three liners Cunard are able to cover the world.

6

4

2009 has been a tough economic year, how have Cunard weathered the storm? Better than we could have expected earlier in the year. “The Cunard Sale” back at the start of the year offered many voyages at terrific value and these were much appreciated by many of our guests which meant we have had a successful summer 2009. We also have international distribution and therefore attract guests from around the world, which enables us to get good support from different markets under different market conditions. The UK in particular has had a very strong year as the Cunard brand continues to punch well above its weight.

5

Cunard are industry leaders for world cruise and world cruise sectors. Why should guests choose these? There is something very special about a world voyage on Cunard. With famous ships every port of call is a special event. Being on board Queen Mary 2 going into cities like Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai adds another element of excitement both to all of our guests on board and to the cities themselves. In the past we have been known to bring Sydney to a standstill and cause major traffic jams and everyone wanted to come down and see our liners. Imagine how much fun it is for our guests to be on the ship and see the whole of Sydney looking at them.

6

Would you explain a typical cruise customer of Cunard? Cunard has a wide appeal and a very cosmopolitan mix of guests. In looking for a different experience, it is often interesting to travel with other nationalities the mix of British, American, Australian and European guests makes everyone feel as though they really are experiencing something different. Some come to Cunard for a “once in a lifetime” experience - no reason why this could not become “three, four or five times in a lifetimes” - as once guests have travelled with Cunard they really feel the urge to travel with us again. So we attract people from all walks of life and of course the range of options on board the ship from

a Britannia stateroom right up to the top Queens Grill suites, boasting the largest space at sea, we can meet aspirations of many, many guests from around the world.

7

Cunard is known for white star service. Would you mind describing this please? One thing that makes Cunard really special are the people that work on board our liners. All aspects of our training come under our “White Star Service” programme. We have a White Star Academy whereby our staff are trained prior to joining the ship and whilst on the ship as well. This has led to a tremendous level of service, but more importantly a sense of shared pride amongst our staff. Our internal mantra is now “We are Cunard!” and if you go below deck and mingle with our fabulous staff, you will understand the real sense of pride in being part of the Cunard family. All of our staff, including myself, wear a White Star Service pin on our jackets and everyone who puts the pin on it really means something very special and that is really noticed by our guests.

A-Z Part

The Caribbean Islands explained

3

St Maarten

This is the final part of our A-Z on the Caribbean islands which started with our July edition. In this edition we are featuring the Saints and Tortola where the lesser known islands of St Thomas and Tortola have lots to offer. Once again we have tried to give a more practical appraisal of the islands to help you get the most from your visit and to help you save money. ST KITTS Another member of the British Commonwealth – St Kitts lies at the top of the Lesser Antilles chain close to Antigua. One can’t help but think that Basseterre the capital has been purpose built to receive the cruise ships. These moor at the cruise pier right in front of Port Zante and the shops – or rather cruise dollar relieving centres !!! Visit Brimstone Hill National Park known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies or the sister island of Nevis just a 45 minute ferry ride way. Get a good feel for the island on the scenic railway – originally built to transport sugar cane or chill out at one of the best beaches on the island Cockleshell Beach. This 2 mile stretch of white sand beach is relatively unspoilt and overlooks the island of Nevis- a shared taxi carrying 4 costs approx $21 per taxi. Try an invigorating natural Aloe Vera massage on the beach – it does wonders for your sunburn !!! St Lucia

bustling markets, & stunning volcanic scenery. Check out picturesque Marigot Bay the location of many films, trek through the rainforest and take a refreshing dip in a waterfall or be adventurous and take a jungle top zip wire adventure. The best beach is Rodney Bay with its white sands or longer Reduit Beach both north of Castries. Most ships moor at the Quayside, bigger ones such as the Queen Mary 2 anchor off shore.

ST MAARTEN Is part of the Leeward island chain just north of Antigua. This was settled at different periods buy both the Dutch and the French so there are two distinct halves to the island. The capital is Philipsburg where the cruise ships dock at the quayside. This is a delightful warren of narrow streets with interesting shops and leafy courtyard cafes. This is a wonderful place to wander around starting in Wathey Square where you will find a fine collection of West Indian Gingerbread houses. The French Capital is Marigot- worth visiting for its markets, café lined waterfront and the chic boutiques of Marina Port La Royale.

ST THOMAS

ST LUCIA St Lucia is the last of our BIG 3 islands in the Caribbean and also one of our favourites. Another lush tropical island and part of the Windward Island group. The capital is Castries in the North West and there is a lush verdant rain forest in the centre. This island is volcanic and is most famous for Les Pitons – 2 twin conical shaped mountains. St Lucia became part of the British Common wealth as recently as 1979. Unlike many islands St Lucia is not wholly reliant on the cruise ships and it exports much of its produce such as bananas, coconut, cocoa, nutmeg and sugar cane. Castries itself is not purpose built for the cruise ships and so its quite commercial. Therefore you have to get out and about to really appreciate what this island has to offer- with charming fishing villages,

To book call: 0800 923 1606

Purchased from the Danes in 1917 for $25 million ST Thomas is part of the US Virgin Islands - this is THE duty free shoppers paradise in the Caribbean. We never really understood this until we went there as all islands have shops selling jewellery and designer brands. Charlotte Amalie is the capital – and this quaint town is a joy to walk around with its cobbled streets and alley ways filled with the best shops in the Caribbean – but not so much “in your face” as the other islands. Unlike most of the other islands this is the US of A in the Caribbean – it’s clean, organised and well run and you may think that you are in one of the Florida Keys. Ships moor at one of the 2 cruise terminals; the closest to the town centre is Havensight Mall within walking distance. The furthest is at Crown Bay Harbour 4 miles to the west and approximately a 5-10 minute $6 taxi ride away. The best beach is Magens Bay approximately 6 miles away from the capital on the other side of the island. Magens Bay is voted one of the top 10 beaches of the world and is a 1 mile stretch of white sand. When entering St Thomas after visiting other ports of call you have to go through US immigration. This is usually organised on board ship before going ashore. If St Thomas is your last port of call - then usually you do not have to go through immigration again when you get to your home port in the US such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale or New York.

TORTOLA This the largest of the British Virgin Islands and as a result they drive on the left (as in the UK) – confusing the American tourists! Road Town is the capital and is nestled at bottom of a backdrop of mountains. The cruise terminal quay is in the centre of the bay at Wickhams Cay 1 with the expensive Wickhams Cay 2 marina off to the right and the tender pier off to the left for the larger ships moored in the bay. Both are walking distance to the shops – but Road Town is not the best of places to wander around. Just up an over the mountain on the other side of the island is the popular Cane Garden beach - this is a lovely palm fringed sweep of white sand. It takes about 10-15 minutes to get there with some magnificent views of the island and the cost is $6 in a shared minibus / taxi. There is an opportunity to swim with the dolphins in the dolphin sanctuary just to the South of Road Town. This may at first seem an exploitation of captured tourist scarred dolphins – but you quickly realise that is a sanctuary for rescued dolphins that are rehabilitated and are a joy to meet. Also another must here are the Baths at Virgin Gorda – the massive volcanic boulders which form secluded pools and grottos. Before you make any plans to get off your ship check how many cruise ships are in port – when we arrived there were 4 cruise ships in port which meant congested roads and beaches reminiscent of the heydays of 70’s Benidorm!

Admire its ancient palaces, castles, cathedrals, churches, museums, gardens and natural parks. The Grazalema Natural Park is a must-see.

Monument to the Discoveries, Lisbon What to expect Canary Island Cruises have been a popular cruise destination for many years and it’s easy to see why. By far the best way to fully appreciate the spectacular scenery and effervescent resorts of the Canaries, and in particular off the beaten track destinations, is by cruise ship. The busiest time for Canary Island Cruises is during the winter months with holidaymakers vying to escape to sunnier climates but cruises to the Canary Islands operate throughout the year with no-fly sailings from UK ports as well as fly cruises.

Ports to visit Possibly the best known of all the islands is Tenerife, a popular destination on Canary Island Cruises that boasts snow capped mountains, delightful sandy beaches and exclusive designer boutiques in its capital, Santa Cruz. It is an island of two halves, with the south hot, dry and arid and the north, green and lush with wild flowers growing profusely. Spain’s highest mountain, the 11,600 foot high Mount Teide is also located nearby, and well worth the effort of reaching the summit for the spectacular panoramic views of all the islands that can be had.

Forged from fiery volcanoes, the Canary Islands offer a unique blend of eerie moon-like landscapes, sandy beaches and bustling holiday resorts. As the islands are duty-free cruise passengers can stock up on cheap supplies and specialist goods such as leather as they spend their time on excursions away from the ship. The four major Canary Islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura are all popular sunshine stop-off points for the world’s best cruise ships, whether on mini-island cruises, or as part of a larger cruise itinerary.

Another favourite destination on Canary Island Cruises is Lanzarote, where most of its attractions are centred on the islands lunar-like landscape. An island borne of over 300 volcanoes, Lanzarote has miles of solidified rock serving as a fascinating reminder of what Mother Nature can do. In Arrecife you can visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in Castillo San José dating from 1776 or experience a camel ride through the continually hissing rocks of Fire Mountain.

Spanish is the dominating culture here but being so close to Africa stepping ashore at any of the Canary Islands offers a unique blend of Moroccan and Mediterranean cultures as well. Add these wonderful cultural elements to the beautiful all-year round sunshine and idyllic scenery and you have a guaranteed blissful stop at any and all of the Canary Islands’ ports.

La Palma

To book call: 0800 923 1606

Another worthwhile visit is Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. The third largest of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria offers a continent of contrasts. There’s the elegant capital, Las Palmas, where Columbus once called en route to the New World; lovely beaches and the Sahara-like sand dunes of Maspalomas; and inland, a volcanic landscape of valleys, gorges and mountains rising to 6,000 feet.

La Palma

L a Coruna is Galicia’s liveliest city and with Galician seafood ranked amongst the best in the world you can’t afford to miss some classic recipes, such as empanadas (large flat pies filled with eels or lamprey, sardines, or meat such as veal or pork).

When you travel around the island of Madeira it quickly becomes clear why it is known as the Garden Island - it is simply awash with colour from a breathtaking display of sub-tropical plants and flowers. So it is hardly surprising that large and colourful flower markets are one of the most arresting features of Funchal, Madeira’s capital. Locally made wicker furniture, lacework and tapestries all make good buys along with the ubiquitous Madeira wine. Funchal is also the base for tours to the islands botanical gardens; the fishing village of Camara de Lobos where Churchill went to paint; Camacha, the wicker centre; the levada walks, part of an ancient irrigation system; and to Reids Hotel for traditional afternoon tea. Some of the best views of the Portuguese capital Lisbon come as your ship cruises along the Tagus River. You pass the Belem Tower and the impressive Monument to the Discoveries with its statue of Henry the Navigator before arriving at the Lisbon cruise terminal. Although small for a European capital, Lisbon city does sprawl a little so you would do best to concentrate on three districts - Baixa, Bairro Alto and Alfama, each with its own distinctive style. Baixa has busy streets of inviting shops, cafés and restaurants while Alfama is the atmospheric old town with narrow cobblestone streets, medieval and Moorish-style buildings, Bairro Alto is another historic district with narrow streets and is a steep climb from Baixa so look out for the 100-year-old lift (Elevador do Carmo) near Rossio Square.

Dear Andrew Dear Jetline Cruise

Just thought I would let you know how much we enjoyed our trip. The package you put

Dear Andy Have just returned from our cruise of a lifetime with Cunard Cruises and we wanted to send you a quick note to say thanks for all your help with the booking. As first time cruisers we weren’t totally sure what we were after but with lots of patience from you we ended up with an unforgettable holiday. Now we have the cruising bug we’ll be calling you again soon for our next adventure! Kind regards, Mr. Mrs. S. Foster, Hertford

To Jo A massive THANK YOU for the cruise you organised for us. It was by far the cheapest we could find and you were so helpful, making sure all the paperwork was sent out promptly. Thanks once again. Oliver Brown, Basingstoke

Ship Focus

P&O Cruises Ventura

13 night cruises from £959pp

P

P&O Cruises are the UK’s leading cruise line, which is no surprise when you look back at their illustrious history. P&O Cruises first invented modern day cruising as we know it back in 1837 and today sail to over 180 different destinations in 72 countries worldwide. Ventura is the newest ship in the fleet, launched with great flair and gusto in April to rapturous applauds, it is the largest ship ever built for Britain. She’s taller than Nelson’s Column, wider than Pall Mall and more than twice as heavy as the Titanic. Ventura is a cruise ship of gigantic proportions. First impressions of Ventura are that she is as British as sausage and onions, with Boddington’s on tap in the bars and home-grown ship’s officers (one crew member for every three passengers). The interiors are contemporary but restrained and there is none of the extreme bling favoured by many new ships these days.

12

Who Should Go Ventura is a totally different concept for P&O Cruises. It has an informal feel, marketed as a newcomers’ ship and aimed at passengers who don’t know the cruising rules. Some post P&O passengers might feel it is ‘too big’ or ‘not for me’ and will most probably look forward to Azura, which despite being another big ship will have a more traditional feel. Noddy is the star attraction for two- to four-year-olds on Ventura. He has a house in their Toy Box area, a model of his car... and a cleverly thought-out play schemes which will mean children learn as they have fun. The huge zone for kids, taking up half of Deck 16, can take up to 850 children, supervised by a team of qualified and vetted staff. There are even cots for children to sleep while their parents are out enjoying the rest of the ship. The great thing is that it is extremely safe for kids, with ID’s checked twice before being allowed through security doors and cameras that discreetly record everything. Passengers without children will probably not even be aware that the kids’ area exists. It has been cleverly designed so nobody needs to go there without a reason. And Ventura isn’t just about families. Grown-ups, with or without the children in tow, have

a massive choice of things to do - from lively bars with cabarets and comedians to a relaxing spa, trendy restaurants and even an art collection from the Tate Modern. Facilities onboard Ventura include 15 passenger decks, 4 pools, a sports court for tennis or football, luxury spa, beauty salon and gym with ocean views. Unique features aboard Ventura include the first circus school at sea, ‘Cirque Ventura’, a digital Scalextric track, and the endless pool. Dining On Ventura you can chose Club dining, where you are allocated a restaurant and table, usually sharing with others, and a set time to dine for the duration of the cruise, or Freedom dining, which allows you to eat when you want, sitting with your nearest and dearest or sharing a table if you want. Dining is more than just about menus on Ventura, it’s about the whole experience which P&O devotes them to ensuring is magnificent. You can linger over exquisite six-course silver-service meals in one of the elegant main restaurants, Bay Tree, Saffron or Cinnamon. Then there’s a variety of authentic Spanish tapas dishes in the relaxed ambience of Ramblas. You can watch skilled chefs create delicious Pacific-rim

dishes in East, whilst families can spend time together in the Beach House, which is great for all ages. The buffet style Waterside restaurant also provides a high quality buffet style option. The White Room has been overseen by restaurateur Marco Pierre White. Here special occasions can be celebrated with fine dining, sophisticated Italian cuisine and fine wines. Staterooms Ventura has 1,546 cabins, of which 445 are inside, 1,101 are outside and 880 have a balcony. Some 23 are wheelchair accessible.

Entertainment and public areas Ventura boasts 12 bars on board and everything from spectacular deck extravaganzas to jazz, comedy and West-End style shows. You can be guaranteed that your evenings are full of choice and you can choose where you want to relax, laugh and entertained in the striking show lounge The Tamarind Club; dance the night away to Salsa and enjoy live musical acts in the Cuban-themed nightclub Havana or sip a delicious cocktail in the laid-back atmosphere of Metropolis.

The cabins are easily on par with top hotel rooms, spacious and beautifully furnished, with original canvas paintings on the walls, flat-screen TVs and splendidly fluffy duvets. Designed to offer the ultimate retreat, all rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, Egyptian cotton bed lines and those all important designer touches that provide a boutique hotel feel. Indulge with your complimentary Temple Spa pamper pack and experience an incredible night’s sleep on a Slumberland 8 deep ‘Gold Seal’ posture sprung mattress. Enjoy tea and coffee making facilities from leading designer Nick Munro, personal steward service and an in-cabin entertainment system complete with flat-screen television.

Ship Review of Grand Princess

by Ian Gilder

I

n November last year my wife Lisa and I were fortunate enough to be invited out to Fort Lauderdale for the naming Ceremony of the Ruby Princess. After 4 days of great hospitality we decided we would cruise on a Princess ship for our own family holiday for the very first time. After having a great cruise the year before going out of Southampton we decided we would again like to go from Southampton and plumped for the Grand Princess on the 1st August for a 14 night cruise around the Med. Ports of call were not particularly important to us as we have visited most of them but a good kids club for my two children (Lois 7 and Frankie 3). I am not going to go into all of the details on the ship but would like to give pointers on how you could get more out of your holiday if you choose to cruise on this ship. Things that I liked The kids club was absolutely first class and this is my first holiday in many years where we have managed to sit around the pool and actually relax and get a suntan. My kids loved the kids club and apparently Lois spent more time in there than any other child. After 10 o’clock at night they had slumber parties so Lisa and I could stay out watch the show and make a donation to the charity called Princess Cruises Casino. Nominal charge of $5 per hour but well worth it. At this point I would like to say if you are a gambler and like busy casino’s you are going to be disappointed. It was quiet every night.

If you do not have children I can recommend the Sanctuary area. This is an area where you pay a small cover charge for a big private cabana with luxury sun loungers. Very relaxed, very quiet and limited amount of people. TOP TIP – When you book your space you are booking a numbered bed. If you want one outside you will need to go straight to the sanctuary and book. I tried booking at 5pm on embarkation day for the whole 14 nights and all outside beds were already reserved. When I was on the Ruby Princes we ate in Sabbatini’s the speciality restaurant and the food was exquisite so we decided we would try one on the Grand. As I am a fussy eater we opted for the Steakhouse and booked ourselves in there for 2 nights. All I can say is exceptional. I ate arguably some of the best steaks that I have ever had at sea. My wife who loves fish was in her element as I don’t allow her to cook fish at home as I have a seafood allergy. After the first 2 nights we ate in there a total of 10 times. We had the same waiter Ody and Lubomir who was the supervisor was fantastic. I have been on many cruises and at times I am a little blasé nowadays. However I would like to congratulate Princess for a couple of the outside deck parties. The first started at 10pm at night at the back of ship and in my opinion was the best ever deck party that I have been to. The back pool was covered and they placed the band on there. Due to the design of the ship the upper decks could look down like a theatre so everyone could have a great view. They also had put pieces of string intertwined

over the pool. At first we wondered what it was there for but all became revealed a little later as they handed out streamers which people throw over the string. With the wind blowing and the lights it was amazing. Now my dislikes which luckily are not too many Due to going in peak time there were 500 kids of which 250 were teenagers. They monopolised the main swimming pool and kept on pushing each other in and dive bombing. After complaining to the front desk they said it was their parent’s responsibility and nothing they could do about it. This is not a norm on this ship but at peak times you expect children onboard. There are 3 other pools with 2 of them children free so you can get away. In my opinion the entertainment could have been better. If you liked quizzes you would have been in your element. You could do at least 4 quizzes every day and 2 of these would be at night in one of the main show lounges. The main shows were excellent and the speciality acts flown in were also very good. If you are old enough to remember ‘Opportunity Knocks’, I am certain you will remember Bernie Flint – he won 12 weeks running. He starred and was excellent. As I have mentioned above in general the whole experience was very good, a couple of minor negatives but overlooking those, the Grand Princess was a very good cruise experience. Taking out the families the average age was slightly older than what I was anticipating but a nice ship, great staff and a good alternative to the usual suspects.

Another great early booking offer for next year on board the MSC Musica – sister ship to the MSC Poesia. Below you will find special reduced prices which will increase at the end of this month. MSC seem have some of the best itineraries packing lots in and this one is no exception. We like this one as the itinerary begins and ends in Venice which has probably one of the best sailaways in the world as the ship sails up the Grand Canal past St Marks Square. Also unusually this itinerary includes an overnight stop to one of the most cosmopolitan party capitals of the Greek islands – Mykonos!

These are unique itineraries for a Canaries cruise as they include Rome and some of them include Lanzarote which cannot be found in most of the Canaries cruises featured in this edition of Cruise Ahoy.

This is for people who want incredible scenery, a chance to visit wildlife in its natural habitat and unspoilt charm. This early booking offer is currently priced with direct flights and an overnight stay in San Francisco. So you get the best of both worlds. Consider extending your holiday and spend extra time in San Francisco to explore Golden Gate Park, Hippy Haight Ashbury, Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf and of course a ride on a street cable car. We would also recommend an extension to your holiday by adding on extra nights in Vancouver giving you the chance to explore Whistler by train. Fly direct from London to San Francisco. Azamara - Small ships and unusual ports of call Unique Itineraries We have decided to feature Azamara again this month as we feel the itineraries we have selected below are unique with lots of unusual ports of call that the larger ships cannot get to. So if you have cruised lots of times and are tired of busy ports of call with 3 mega ships in at the same time – this may be the answer for something totally different. All in all a great way to explore a whole list of exotic destinations effortlessly in style. Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey are sister ships which are ideal for those cruisers who shy away from the large all singing all dancing super ships with more facilities than your local town. They have more of a club like atmosphere - being much smaller than most at just over 30,000 tonnes carrying around 700 passengers. They have a luxurious and quality feel which really appeal to the select where formal attire is never required. The main restaurant has open seating and there are a further 4 places to eat. The spa is excellent, the grand staircase is very impressive and the Looking Glass lounge is a great place to dance away the evening! There is also a show lounge, casino, 2 whirlpools, a swimming pool and much more.

This ship has always been marketed primarily to families due to the best children’s facilities afloat including a large fun water park. However – it also makes a great holiday for couples young and old particularly outside of school holidays. One of the best features on this ship is the Royal Promenade; this large indoor ‘shopping’ thoroughfare is a great place to sit

One of the Best Kept secrets

With Holland America Line – it is necessary to book early, as the American market recognise it as THE premium 5-star cruising brand. A cruise on Holland America Line cannot be compared to regular 4 star brands as their modern fleet of cruise ships are spacious, have less passengers onboard relative to their size and are tastefully decorated with works of art and fresh flowers throughout. This company oozes service, quality and style – aimed at the more select and discerning cruiser. Our Eurodam offers from Dover sold well throughout August and so we thought we would include them again in this edition – particularly since September will be your last chance to book these offers. The Westerdam Caribbean cruises were also extremely popular - a high quality cruise at a low price. For this month we have also added Alaska cruises on the Zuiderdam (sister ship to the Westerdam) as the itinerary includes Glacier Bay.

Plus we have also thrown in a mystery gift – revealed once you have made a booking!!!

Norwegian Sun is a comfortable 78,309 tonnes with 12 decks. Freestyle Dining means that you don’t have set dining times and tables to sit at, leaving you free to enjoy your cruise at your own pace. There are 12 dining options on board and 6 are included - the Four Seasons, Seven Seas, Pacific Heights, Garden Café, Tapas Bar and room service. For the remaining 6 there is a cover charge payable these include: Le Bistro (French), Il Adagio (Italian), Ginza (Japanese), East Meets West (Steakhouse), Sushi & Teppanyaki. Having tried the Teppanyaki – we highly recommend it.

This is one of our favourite cruise itineraries in the Mediterranean cruising from our favourite port. A short flight takes you to romantic and extremely picturesque Venice; which has one of the best city sailaways in the Med - as the ship glides past Saint Mark’s Square on its way out to sea. This mixed with the charm and varied beauty of the Greek islands makes a perfect Summer cruise. We always feel it is a shame to sail from Venice and not actually stay there; so with this offer we have included an overnight hotel stay. We have chosen hotels close to Saint Mark’s Square and are within easy strolling distance of all the historical sights and the Rialto Bridge. This area is also well connected by the relatively inexpensive water bus which also operates a service to the cruise terminal. Itinerary 1: Fly to Venice. Overnight hotel stay. The Mariner of the Seas The Mariner of the Seas was the last of the 5 Voyager class ships to be built in January 2004 and was the best of the Voyager class fleet with lots of upgrades and modifications to enhance the cruise experience. At 138,000 tonnes the big innovations of this class of ship are the excellent Royal Promenade (indoor shopping mall style thoroughfare), ice skating rink and rock climbing wall. The large whirlpool in the fitness centre area is particularly invigorating!
