ou could describe the theme of Issue 2 of Jetset as “Anything is Possible.” Because we here firmly believe that the only true limit is your imagination when it comes to finding what you want and getting what you need. Our “Dream Makers” feature is an in-depth guide that shows what is (virtually anything) and isn’t (practically nothing) available for the discerning traveler with the necessary resources. This piece is all about luxury concierge services, and what’s out there if you have someone you can trust in your corner who really knows how to make it happen. The same holds true on the luxury auction market. I’m sure you’ve heard tales of rare, original works of art being sold through the top auction houses at prices in the mid nine-figures. But what you’ll discover is that no matter your price range, there is something out there for you (again, if you have a little help). We’re confident you’ll find this oftentimes intimidating and esoteric world a little easier to navigate after you read my feature story on “Winning Luxury Auctions.” For our cover story we sit down for an exclusive interview with one of the most successful actors of her generation, the lovely Scarlett Johansson. We reexamine her incredible body of work and discover how she prepared for her latest physically demanding role. We learn that she is certainly not afraid to take risks, but what about you? How do you feel about cage diving with great white sharks or high-altitude low-opening parachuting? Does an extreme climbing vacation where you sleep affixed to a mountain 3,000 feet above the ground sound fun to you? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then our extreme luxury travel adventure story (“Unplugged”) is right up your alley. For the less adventurous, as always, these pages are packed with the finest in luxury goods, resorts, and destinations on earth. Our debut “Trending” section helps bring you all the latest lavish things, places, and trends you need to know about. Elsewhere, we show you other incredible new things like custom, 24k goldplated iPhones and souped-up McLarens. And our favorite shark (Daymond John), author (Robert Kiyosaki), and real estate maven (Ken McElroy) all have fascinating articles on how markets are changing and people need to get with the times; while our favorite entrepreneur (Barry LaBov) and doctor (John Demartini) each give valuable advice on managing our time effectively. Once again, reading their insight is akin to attending a weekend seminar with some of the world’s preeminent business minds. We also go one-on-one with inspirational young golfer Sydney Cox. And instead of simply listing more one-of-a-kind spectacular golf destinations around the world, we’re showing you how to enjoy those spectacular courses even more…by using them to work on your game. Our comprehensive guide to elite golf academies is a feature that any avid golfer should find invaluable and entertaining. And if it helps lower your handicap in the process, consider it just another example that yes, anything is possible. Enjoy Issue 2 of the greatest luxury publication out there, and stay dialed in to the affluent lifestyle at JetsetMag.com.

et those dreams of a delivery drone dropping off a box at your front door (or your pool, if their aim is off) roughly an hour after you’ve ordered a product on Amazon fade away. That technology rumor is so 2015. The hot new trend in the aeronautical industry is a drone that can — at roughly the same speed limit on an American freeway — efficiently deliver the world’s most precious cargo...you. Created by Guangzhou, Chinabased company Ehang, the Ehang 184 Passenger Taxi Drone is a low-altitude autonomous aerial vehicle reportedly now in the United States undergoing further testing that could be a potential game changer in the world of transportation.
18
JETSETMAG.COM
This human-sized drone can sustain a single passenger as long as they weigh under 220 pounds, and Ehang promises a comfortable cabin environment and stable flight experience. If you’ve been to Dubai in the past year, you may have caught a glimpse of this aerial marvel gracefully navigating its way through a slalom course of skyscrapers on one of its 100 successful manned test flights. Aside from space-age convenience and an off the charts overall cool quotient, the drone was designed to fly and land safely, with engineers focusing on providing dynamic balance and wind resistance. Plus there’s room for a suitcase ( just in case wherever you fly yourself is worth staying the night).

eadquartered in Stetten, Germany with branches across the globe, Novitec’s reputation for high-performance automotive augmentation is well known amongst motorsports enthusiasts and exotic car owners alike. Working exclusively with a handful of distinct manufacturers, their masterfully engineered designs can be found on many of today’s hottest models. Having already worked on a range of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, and Rolls-Royce vehicles, we had no doubt that when Novitec got their hands on this McLaren 570S Coupé, the final product would be nothing short of perfection. Thanks to our friends at McLaren Scottsdale, we had the unique opportunity of taking this exquisite machine for an extended test drive and the results were mind-boggling. The impressive 0-60 time of 2.9 seconds was immediately apparent and the noise produced from the twin-turbos spooling up in concert gives the model a true race car sound and feel. A seven-speed gearbox with paddle shifters contributes to a variety of driving modes to further elaborate on the JETSETMAG.COM
570’s already unique handling abilities, while the all-aluminum engine block has been precisely tuned to compete with the likes of its rival: the famed Porsche 911 Turbo S. For Novitec’s part, a lightweight carbon fiber aero kit has been added which includes a front lip spoiler, side rocker panels, covers for side air-intake vents, rear-bumper side covers, an aggressive rear wing, and a dual-branch rear window air box for increased airflow to the engine bay. Bespoke wheel and tire treatments from McLaren
“As with any McLaren, aerodynamics play an important role in the 570S and provide much more than just aggressive styling.”
Scottsdale coincide with customized suspension components to provide additional enhancements, while Novitec’s optional three-stage engine tuning gives 570S owners the opportunity to add an extra 76 hp to their inherently powerful stock configuration with upgraded engine management software and premium quality exhaust systems. If you have been looking for your next great supercar, your search may be over.... To learn more about the Novitec McLaren 570S, visit JetsetMag.com for the exclusive, extended review.

MOBIADO OFFERS A MORE ELEGANT MOBILE SOLUTION BY TY FAHLMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAHREL OLSON

s a member of the affluent community, you pride yourself in your individuality and pursuit of the finer things in life. You don’t drive the same car as everyone else; you don’t wear the same clothes, build the same house, or wear the same watch. So why are you carrying around the same cell phone? It’s a simple question, one that I must admit I have never thought to ask. But the innovators at Mobiado have been asking it for years, and built their entire company on the belief that successful people deserve a better phone. Implementing the same technology used in producing precision parts for the aerospace and luxury watch industries, Mobiado has always sought to create more elegant and sophisticated mobile devices. Their creations are always eye-catching works of art, with exquisite details like fine 24k gold and engraved original artwork. But their latest “Grand7” line of iPhone 7s may be their finest works yet. Featured over the next three pages, these phones are CNC machined from copper and plated with either pure 24k gold or rhodium before being precision cut with a unique design and embossed with a sapphire plate bearing Mobiado’s distinctive griffin logo. The Grand7 elevates something that is usually an afterthought to the status of fine luxury goods. After spending time with one, you develop the same attachment you feel to your favorite timepiece, making it hard to go back to a plain old iPhone. Because when you think about it, you may have the Plus, or a few more gigs of storage, but at the end of the day you are still walking around with the same exact phone in your pocket as the person next to you on the street. Our cellphones are one thing that despite class and social standing, are all created equal. At least until now. Mobiado.com

Having a couple married at the Vatican and blessed by the Pope, and arranging a private, candlelit dinner for a couple underneath the Statue of David while Andrea Bocelli serenaded them. So yeah, it’s safe to say this man knows a thing or two about making the impossible possible for his clients. When I ask him what people should look for when selecting a concierge, he immediately says it all begins with trust. “It should always be a conversation, not a transaction,” he says. That means making sure that they really understand who you are. A capable concierge should know everything relevant about you. “Be prepared for a lengthy interview process,” Sims says. The best concierge services will vet you, not the other way around. “We only take about five percent of applicants,” he adds, “we want to make sure that our applicants fit the level of quality we expect from our members.” Good concierge services will do everything possible to understand who you are and what you are looking for from them. Are you someone who travels three to four days a week? Where do you travel to? Do you travel alone? What type of hotels do you like to stay at? What type of restaurants do you like to go to? They should know everything about you and your proclivities. “If you love a certain kind of Scotch, only drive Italian cars, only stay at hotels with spas, and never miss a Kentucky basketball game,” your concierge should know that, Sims says. Takeoff // Luxury Be Prepared to Pay...Within Reason If the answer is “yes,” then you are eventually going to have to sign a contract. Almost every luxury concierge charges an annual membership fee. These can range from a few thousand to a few hundred thousand, depending on how comprehensive the service promised is. But “the best service is not necessarily the most expensive,” Sims says, “I would be quite suspicious of a company charging you a lot up front for a membership.” Where the primary costs are incurred is for services rendered. Expect to spend appropriately for incredible services (alas, if you have to ask how much a Vatican wedding costs, it’s probably not for you)…but still be leery of exorbitant mark-ups on tickets and services. “If you look online and see Super Bowl tickets are going for 5k and your concierge bills you 20k for a pair, you probably need to find a new concierge,” Sims jokes. The Experience of a Lifetime Now the fun part. Your concierge should be able to open every door that you either couldn’t or didn’t know how to open on your own. That hot new restaurant everyone is taking about? Give them a ring and you have a table on a Friday night. That exclusive new club
36
Reputation is Everything You also want to know the reputation of the service you are selecting. Most luxury concierge companies do not advertise; they gain business solely off of referrals and word of mouth. So chances are, if you are sitting down with a concierge company for the first time, you were told about them by a friend or read superlative reviews online. “All concierge services claim to be in a class of their own,” Sims says, “few actually are.” So be sure to ask your friend or research what exactly the concierge you’re looking at specializes in — is it everything you need and more? And most importantly, “Make sure they aren’t looking at it as a transaction, but as a relationship,” Sims says. “As with any committed relationship, you have to ask yourself first, ‘Do I really want to be in a relationship with this person?’” JETSETMAG.COM

For instance, if U2 is your favorite band, then of course your concierge should know that. But instead of you asking them for front-row tickets when you hear U2 is coming to town, your concierge should be asking you if you want to attend the private concert Bono is playing next week in LA that nobody knows about. “That’s the difference,” Sims says, “it’s all about the little details, it’s all about going the extra mile.” Sims says that the David dinner and Vatican wedding were not his clients’ ideas...they were his. “Let your concierge’s imagination be an extension of your own,” he says, “let them turn your dreams into reality.” Thinking of adding a luxury concierge to your list of professionals? that even the gorgeous models are lining up outside trying to get in? You’re on the list. Game 7 of the NBA Finals? You’re sitting next to the player’s bench. If you can dream it, they should be able to do it. And more so, they should be reliable. “Everyone can promise tickets to the Oscars,” Sims says, “but not everyone always delivers.” (If you have been using a concierge for a while and find that they are not always good at fulfilling their promises, it may be time to part ways). And while most concierge services promise the same thing in terms of access to events, restaurants, and entertainment, you want one that will always go the extra mile. Say you want to drive a Ferrari while on vacation in the South of France. “Anyone can find a luxury car rental service in almost any city,” Sims says, “you don’t need a concierge for that.” You need someone who creates an experience. “But what if we got you a vintage Ferrari, and had you drive it along the countryside with a legendary driver?” Sims asks, filling with excitement. “Then we took you touring an incredible collection of

he demand for the best of the best when it comes to rare and exquisite treasures is as high as it has ever been for the people that can afford them, and that rings true at every collecting level and category. Technological advances over the past 10 to 15 years have brought greater access to information and images, making it easier than ever to connect buyers to the world’s most expensive, rare, and desired artwork, wine, furniture, real estate, and jewels. Welcome to the ultra-exciting, ultra-affluent world of luxury auctions. With connections across the globe, the two most iconic names in the luxury auction industry remain Christie’s and Sotheby’s. So Jetset connected with these legendary New York auction houses to learn where latest trends are skewing, discover some of the basic dos and don’ts of the luxury auction world, and find out what the most spectacular “must-have” items have been selling for lately. Because, regardless of your net worth or knowledge of fine collectibles, to many, the world of luxury auctions can be an intimidating one.
Edvard Munch (1863-1944), Pikene på broen (Girls On The Bridge) Signed E. Munch and dated 1902 (upper right), oil on canvas, 39 3/4 by 40 3/8 in. (101 x 102.5 cm.) Painted in 1902. Estimate in excess of $50 million. Sold for: $54,487,500
Something for Everyone There’s no question that the art sales in the eight and nine figure range generate the biggest headlines and leave jaws hanging from Monte Carlo to Beijing, London to Beverly Hills. But believe it or not, for savvy and astute buyers there is value to be found in the luxury auction world. There are original paintings by recognizable and renowned artists that sell for roughly the same amount as luxury vacationers spend for a single night in a five-star villa. In some online sales, a knowledgable and prepared buyer could pick up an original de Kooning or Warhol for a few thousand bucks, and it is not uncommon for investors to have their choice of all kinds of interesting items in the $5,000 to $10,000 range.
Doing Your Homework But first things first, it certainly pays to be knowledgeable about what you are interested in potentially bidding for. Christie’s offers roughly 350 auctions throughout the year in over 80 categories, including all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewelry, photographs, collectibles, and wine. The range of items stretches from original Picassos to vintage Bourdeaux, from brand-new Jeff Koons balloons to ancient jewelry, with price points just as diverse, starting at $200 dollars and ending north of $150 million. Education is absolutely imperative, and on top of the research you can do on your own, the leading established auction houses have ample resources available for potential buyers to make sure they are entering an auction with as much knowledge and expertise that they can find. I spoke with Sotheby’s Executive Vice President Hugh Hildesley, one of the true leaders and visionaries in the industry. He shared phenomenal insight and stressed to me that his company is incredibly focused on preparing all their clients and buyers to be as ready as possible before the bidding starts. “Our advice is to come to exhibitions and take a good look,” he says, “[to] talk to the specialists to have them explain why the item is a good option for them or not.” He says they explain to potential buyers why exactly an estimate is what it is, exactly what condition an item is in, and how it might fit into their current collection. “The research done before bidding is absolutely essential,” he adds. “Our specialists will tell you to spend up to a certain amount for an item...and then to be careful.” Of course the world’s finest collectibles that many people deem priceless always have a price if someone is willing to pay it. That’s why the auction model is tested and proven to be a successful vehicle for moving pricey objects for over 250 years, and while auction houses are the most traditional venues, there are complementary channels to buy and sell, including private sales and online-only auctions. It usually just comes down to what is more convenient and accessible for the client. But no matter how someone decides to sell or buy, it is imperative to be educated and prepared. JETSETMAG.COM
A Magnificent & Important Cased Pair of French Silver-mounted Rifled Flintlock Pistols By Nicolas-Noel Boutet, Versailles, the case dated ‘1825’. Price realized: $1,805,000
A Changing Industry It’s worth noting that in an industry that has been around for two and a half centuries, the most change it has ever seen has come in the past 10 years. According to Hildesley, the two primary reasons for this are the Internet, and the growing influence of Chinese buyers. “The market overall has gone global, as opposed to local,” he says. The Chinese market (or Asian market in general) has begun to influence trends in the auction world, while technology has fundementally changed the way people bid. “15 years ago, if you told me I could buy something by clicking online, I would have said that is not going to happen,” Hildesley says. “Well guess what? It is happening all over the world.” He goes on to tell me that online buying in 2016 at Sotheby’s alone was $155 million (representing a 20% increase from 2015), and “of the buyers who buy online, 53% are new clients.” As for the Chinese influence, he makes a point to stress the fact that Chinese buyers come motivated, loaded with liquidity, and ready to buy. “They do their homework, Hildesley says, “they are very fussy about quality. They spend new levels of price for the very best things including Imperial Chinese art, contemporary art, wine, watches….”
Big-Ticket Items The staggering price tags of the more expensive lots is one of the most fascinating aspects of the industry. In some cases, it’s hard to believe how just astronomically immense the winning bids are. A Christie’s spokesperson paints a picture for us of the most expensive items they have sold in one of their auctions. “The most expensive lot that we have sold at Christie’s was Picasso’s Les Femmes d’Alger (Version ‘O’),” she says, “the painting set a new world record for the most valuable work of art ever sold at auction, $179.4 million.” The piece was sold in a curated auction entitled “Looking Forward to the Past,” part of Christie’s 20th Century Week back in May of 2015. The total for that week was $1.726 billion and is still the highest total for a single week of sales in auction history. Recently a Klimt oil painting sold for over $56 million at Sotheby’s London after being estimated at $45 million, and a Richter painting entitled Eisberg from a private European collection sold for over $21 million in London. Hildesley says that the stratospheric sale prices are understandable when you apply the proper reasoning to the equation. “It’s not a surprise when you understand the background that’s created the value,” he says. “If something is really rare, one of a kind, in perfect condition, and clicks all the boxes, with the wider market that we now have, you’d expect higher prices.”

“The research done before bidding is absolutely essential. Our specialists will tell you to spend up to a certain amount for an item...and then to be careful.” Of course when dealing with world treasures of such immense value, the vetting process is no small feat. The first step is having an item appraised. For instance, Christie’s will review up to six items for free. Potential bidders are all required to open an account, where they provide basic information like their name, address, and contact info. (For certain transactions, financial references or a deposit may be required as a condition before allowing you to bid.) As for the actual processes of bidding, there are several different methods for people to choose from to make their bid, including in person, on telephone, or in absentia. I was curious to find out what the atmosphere is like when the highest priced items are being bid on by well-funded aspirational future owners. Is it acceptable to cheer? Just what is the vibe and energy like when the auctioneer rolls stratospheric digits off his tongue, pitting multiple bidders against each other in order to make sure the highest price possible is secured? Takeoff // Auctions Christie’s spokesperson explained what the room is like. “It really depends on the auction,” she says. “For our 20th Century Week in May and November, they are ticketed events and the auction room is fully packed.” But for other sales it varies. “Some collecting categories are pursued by collectors and dealers who prefer to bid in person,” she goes on to say, “while others have very active telephone and online bidding via Christie’s LIVE.” Noteworthy collections such as Elizabeth Taylor in 2011 and Joan Rivers private collection in 2016 brought in “huge crowds” both to Christie’s galleries and auctions.

Falling in Love Hildesley says the lucrative online auctions are certainly different than the live auctions they conduct all over the world, but nonetheless special in their own right. “You try to create the buzz online because it is happening so quickly,” he says, “it’s not as exciting as an auction in a room with real people, but it’s still pretty exciting because things are clicking along pretty fast.” Christie’s and Sotheby’s have both been around a very long time, and have become experts at adapting to changes in technology, buying trends, and worldwide wealth distribution. Above all, they know what matters in the fast-paced world of high-priced auctions. Because at its core, buying rare and expensive treasures still comes down to one thing. “You only buy what you fall passionately in love with,” Hildesley says. “Because as in life, it doesn’t get better later...you have to be in love from the beginning.” Here’s to falling in love.

any know Sydney Cox as a professional golfer, but the passionate, spirited Oklahoman has proven herself to be so much more. Last year, she entered the Miss Jetset competition to honor her late father’s battle with cancer, and as she made her way to the top of the Miss Jetset Final Five, the devoted philanthropist and fitness guru inspired countless individuals along the way. With that in mind, I was eager to get together with Sydney for an exciting afternoon of golf at Desert Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, to learn more about what exactly drives her.

I meet Sydney on a blissful, 80-degree afternoon, and I am instantly struck by how humble and genuine she is. Before we tee off, I ask her how she got into golf. She tells me that when she was young, her family moved from a small town just outside Oklahoma City to the even smaller town of Chandler. At the local course there, golf memberships were just $35, allowing an 11-year-old Sydney (who came from humble means) the opportunity to try the sport. “It’s kind of one of those things where you just fall in love with it and in a way...you obsess over it,” she says. “At the end of the day, you know you just have to work to get better, and I wasn’t going to stop ‘til I got to where I wanted to go.” I have never played with Sydney before, but I know she’s sponsored by WinStar and I’d heard of her reputation from the Symetra, CN Canadian Women’s, and Australian tours. After a few holes, I begin to see her true competitive nature. “You have to learn how to shoot 65,” she says, “you have to learn how to handle the pressure of whatever golf throws your way.” Sydney’s hard work at a young age lead to a full scholarship at Oklahoma City University. It was during her Junior Year there that she lost her father to esophageal cancer. In his honor, she poured her heart and soul into golf, winning the NCAA Women’s Individual National Championship the following year. (Nowadays, Sydney writes her father’s initials on a golf ball every time she plays.) The Miss Jetset competition gave Sydney another opportunity to honor her father, and the more she learned about the B+ Foundation, the more she gained inspiration. “Seeing all they do is truly remarkable,”
she says of the organization, “[they] help support kids’ foundations all over, including St. Jude’s in Oklahoma City, a place close to my heart.” And despite coming in just short of the title, she’s extremely proud of the work she accomplished. “I think when you see the check for $240,000, that is when it really sets in,” she says, “the thought that I raised so much money for a cause so close to me instantly wiped away that disappointment.” The sun begins to set as we approach our final hole and I ask Sydney how the contest changed her life. “It took me out of my shell a little bit,” she says. “It took me away from just being a ‘professional golfer’ and helped me showcase the person that I always knew I was.” (Her notoriety from the competition lead to appearances at Dodgers games and speeches for organizations like the Edmond Women’s Club.) “I am adventurous and always seeking new opportunities and new ways to be driven and I feel like this competition took all of my greatest assets and put them into play,” she adds. As she stares down her final putt, from a good 10 feet, I ask Sydney what her overarching philosophy in life is. “Fall in love with whatever you want to do because when you fall in love with something you work harder, you aim higher, and you achieve better, she says.” She taps the ball with surgical precision, sinking the putt. A polite little smile comes across her face. She turns back to me. “Fall in love so that you will never stop striving to be the best and changing as many lives as you can along the way.” I’ve only known her for a few hours, but she’s already changed mine. e at Jetset take pride in showcasing the most opulent resorts with the finest amenities. But for some, a tranquil visit to the beach, a leisurely round of golf, or a quiet day at the spa is a little too...boring. No, some crave a little more excitement and adventure in their luxury vacations. So for that reason, we have scoured the globe to bring you the most thrilling, over-thetop, and unbelievable (yet for the most part, still luxurious) vacations imaginable. From swimming with great white sharks to sleeping atop mountains, these are the finest experiences for those who like to live life unplugged.
GREAT WHITE SHARK DIVING What’s more exhilarating than being face-to-face with the largest predator on the planet? Admittedly, diving with a great white shark is not for everyone, but for thrillseekers, it’s usually somewhere on the bucket list. There are only four places in the world to stare down one of these majestic beasts, and the first is right here in the US. Just 28 miles off the San Francisco Coast, the Farallon Islands offer a great place to cage dive with a White Shark, and Great White Adventures is the most reputable service in the area. The next closest place for an encounter is Mexico’s Guadalupe island, which from July to October offers perhaps the most crystalclear vantage of any white shark diving locale in the world. SolmaV is a luxury vessel that departs from Ensenada for five-day adventures implementing their one-of-a-kind three-person submersible cage for dives up to 30 feet. If your desire is to see these beauties out of the water, then False Bay/Seal Island in South Africa is the place. Apex Shark Expeditions offers an incredible “Shark Trail” package. And lastly, Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions in South Australia is the only company to put a cage on the ocean floor and offers epic threenight excursions. ISSUE 2 . 2017

HALO PARACHUTING Pioneered by the military, this more extreme version of skydiving has developed a fervent following of thrillseekers in recent years. Traditional skydiving involves opening a parachute at a high altitude after free-falling for a short period of time, whereas HALO (or “High Altitude Low Opening”) jumpers open their shoots at the lowest possible altitude, resulting in a long, intense freefall, and one of the most breathtaking experiences one can possibly have. Incredible Adventures is a great company out of Tennessee offering the service, but a warning: HALO jumping is not for the faint of heart.
CYCLING DEATH ROAD Its name evokes fear amongst cyclists and locals alike. Known as “Camino de la Muerte” or “The Death Road,” this veritable “Mount Everest for cyclists” in Bolivia offers a descent of more than 11,800 feet and will test even the most skilled rider. As scenic as it is deadly, the journey takes you from the stunning snow-covered high-altitude plains and mountain ranges of La Paz all the way down to the depths of the misty Amazonian Jungle in just under five hours. As you descend, the terrain only gets more treacherous, making this a true test of rider’s limits.
EXTREME MOUNTAIN CAMPING If traditional camping fails to rouse your adventurist spirit, try sleeping 3,000 feet above ground while affixed to a mountain. It’s certainly not for the timid (or height-averse), but the thrill of extreme mountain camping is one of the most awe-inspiring outdoor experiences one can have. Utilizing portaledges (metal-framed hammocks with sturdy bases), this activity allows you to go on multiday vertical excursions that test you to your core. Some of the best locations are Sahale Glacier in Washington State, Cerre Torre along the Chilean border, and the dense ice caves of Antarctica.
THE HELIXOT XO 6.2 BACKPACK If you are seriously thinking of shark diving or attempting the dusty Death Road, then you might want to invest in one of these handy innovations. Perfect for inclement environments, this ergonomic, fully-waterproof, fully-submersible, abrasion-resistant backpack will keep your most prized possessions (phone, laptop, food) safe from the elements in almost any situation — on land and in water. With a padded abdominal strap, locking cap, and quick-release strap buckle, this is truly the ultimate adventure companion.

Educating for the Jobs of Tomorrow By Daymond John
A
t this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, I had the pleasure of visiting with one of the nations’s top auto manufacturers. This enlightening meeting gave me a little insight into how they do business and helped get me up-to-date on everything that they’re working on. The most exciting thing? Their new technology concerning self-driving cars. I am always looking towards the future, and I am convinced — especially after visiting with this automaker — that autonomous vehicles are going to play a huge role in our future. But something they shared alarmed me. They told me they can’t find enough technicians to service these vehicles. How could that be? I wondered.

It really speaks to a larger problem in our country, one that begins in the classroom. Kids these days are going to college for four years, and getting out two-hundred or three-hundred thousand dollars in debt. This places a tremendous burden on them as they begin their careers. Imagine starting a basketball game down twenty points; your chances of success aren’t great, are they? And the worst part is that fifty percent of these kids in school today will end up retiring with a job title that doesn’t exist any more. Think about that for a second. Think about the massive amount of debt these kids are acquiring, and remind yourself that many of them are studying for job titles that will be either antiquated or obsolete. On the other hand, as countless jobs disappear, others (many in entirely new or developing sectors) are being created. The automaker I met with said that they can find tons of traditional mechanics — the kinds that work at bodyshops and dealerships — but the specialists they actually need are scarce to say the least. The week after CES, I went and spoke at the Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) Summit and Construction Dealer Expo (CONDEX), and they told me that whether it is for crane operators or technicians or bulldozer operators, their job listings are vacant for 15 months. 15 months! Meanwhile, another 5,000 steel workers will probably have gotten laid off by the time you read this…. Unlike my fellow shark Mark Cuban, I am not a political guy. People that know me know that I steer clear of heated debates and try not to get involved in public political discussions; it’s just not who I am. I have met our new president several times, and I know many people who have done business with him. There are things I like about him, and things I don’t. I didn’t support him, yet there are
definitely some things I agree with that he has proposed. But there is one thing in particular he has said that frustrates me, one thing he has really hammered on that I feel is somewhat disingenuous. Frequently throughout the campaign (and now in the White House), President Trump has talked about how he is going to bring back manufacturing and coal mining jobs. He has gone to the plants, hosted members of these communities, and made several firm, declarative promises. Now I understand where he is coming from; he wants to acknowledge the people that feel like society doesn’t care about them (and in many ways, the forgotten blue collar workers in the Rust Belt are the reason he got elected). But I feel like he is doing these people a grave disservice. He doesn’t want to tell them the truth. But if we truly care about them (as I believe he does), then we have to be honest with ISSUE 2 . 2017

them. The truth is that many of these people’s jobs are not coming back. The world has changed, manufacturing has changed, and energy is changing as well. Many jobs that have been shipped to China or Mexico are gone for good. But where some see despair, I see opportunity. What if we taught these steel workers to become crane operators? What if we taught these coal miners to work at solar plants? And what if we taught our truck drivers to become autonomous car techs? The car manufacturer I met with told me that these technicians can earn up to $150,000 a year. Even better, they only have to go to school one year, not four like so many of these kids who are piling on debt to learn an antiquated trade and pray for a 50k a year starting salary. The crane/bulldozer operators and machine technicians I learned about at CONDEX? They can make over $200,000 a year. And these are just some of the “blue collar” jobs; the tech companies of tomorrow are literally begging for more well-trained technicians and programers. I could go on, but the fact is that there are countless good, high-paying jobs out there in new and emerging industries.
“We need to start being honest with not just our blue collar workers, but our kids as well. They deserve it.”
We just need better education. Schools in this country (at all levels) are antiquated. I could dive way in depth on this topic, but that is a different article for a different time. All I am going to say is that we need to start being honest with not just our blue collar workers, but our kids as well. They deserve it. Reality check. Not everyone who graduates high school should go to college, and not everyone who goes to college is going to become a doctor, teacher, or lawyer. But everyone who goes to college will leave with massive amounts of debt. So why not start at the beginning and find the right path for each student before they learn useless information and pile on tremendous debt? I am also a realist. I know that educating workers who have spent years in dying industries to learn a new trade will be tough. But it’s not impossible. And it’s far easier to reform our education system from grade school to trade school to make sure that we are training our workers for the careers of the future, not the careers of the past. Now, as a Jetset reader, you may be wondering how exactly this all applies to you. But this issue goes way beyond moral responsibility. These are the people that will make our businesses successful for generations, and our financial future is directly tied to theirs. So let’s start being honest with them. Let’s start really educating them. Our future depends on it.

HOW TO CREATIVELY COMBAT OUR SHRINKING ATTENTION SPANS BY BARRY LABOV
M
any of us at one time or another have owned a goldfish. Whether it was via an ill-fated birthday present or a lucky toss at the local carnival, the domesticated crimson fish has played a role in most American childhoods. They swim around, seemingly happy, but often never make it past a few weeks, let alone a few months or years. However, thanks to a recent study by Microsoft, the goldfish may finally have one up on us. The study revealed the average human attention span has fallen from twelve seconds in 2000 to a mere eight seconds today. Goldfish, on the other hand, have an average attention span of nine seconds.
ISSUE 2 . 2017
79
Altitude // Industry
No, this doesn’t mean that we’re doomed to the same fate as our flake-loving friends. But it does, however mean that in business, we need to use innovative methods to capture and hold people’s attention, and get our message across before the next distraction arises. Because that average attention span of eight seconds is the amount of time you have to get a short-term response to a stimulus. If you’ve succeed in capturing someone’s attention before the time is up, then you have additional opportunities to hold their attention. Research has also shown that the average adult can focus on a single activity for about 20 minutes. That means when it comes to communicating information to customers or employees, it’s important to avoid long presentations that will lose their attention. If the information you need to convey is going to take longer than 20 minutes, then it’s recommended that the information be broken into small, bite-sized chunks of learning. These short bursts help sustain your audience’s attention so that they can better absorb what you’re conveying without missing a portion of it due to distraction. Within the 20 minutes you have to convey your message, there are a number of different methods that can be used to sustain your audience’s attention. In training (as well as in sales), gamification (or the application of typical elements of game playing) has been
shown to be an effective tool. Gamification is using game mechanics to motivate audiences toward desired actions through competition, achievement, and status. It can provide the motivation people need to maintain their focus on a topic. Another way to sustain attention is through collaboration and knowledge sharing. Letting your audience spend time working together, share ideas and best practices, and help each other solve challenges is a highly effective way of sustaining their attention. In addition to a traditional one-way method of delivering information, letting an audience engage with and learn from each other can help keep them focused. The decrease in attention span over the last 16 years is primarily attributed to the digital age. The greatest temptation is something within arm’s reach of us at all times — our phones. Texts, social media, and the Internet are all distractions that can take our attention away at any moment. One way to avoid these digital distractions is to provide technology breaks when the audience can check their phones, respond to texts, and so forth. Otherwise, their phones remain silent and their computers remain closed. This is a good method to use in meetings as well. More of us are taking laptops to meetings these days. With a computer in front of you, it’s tempting to multitask and not give your full focus to the purpose of a meeting. However, if you have everyone close their computers at the beginning of a meeting and let them know you’ll be taking technology breaks, you are more likely to sustain their attention and get more valuable focus time. Maintaining attention isn’t only important for training and during meetings, but also for the work we do when we’re alone. According to a 2015 study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, a disruption as short as 2.8 seconds doubles your chance of making an error. Looking at our phones may only take a couple seconds, but it’s enough to cause a disruption in one’s thinking. Those distractions take mental energy that would normally be reserved for the task you’re trying to complete, and can result in mistakes you otherwise wouldn’t have made. As attention spans get shorter and shorter, it becomes increasingly important to use creative methods for capturing and maintaining focus. Whether you’re training employees, explaining how to use a new product or feature to customers, or sitting in your office trying to accurately complete a task, maintaining attention must be a top priority. Knowing the limitations of the average attention span and ability to sustain attention, you can design your customer and employee interactions to most effectively convey your information. And then, hopefully, we can start beating the goldfish again.

HOW TECHNOLOGY WILL REVOLUTIONIZE THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY BY KEN MCELROY
T
82
JETSETMAG.COM
he next generation of home buyers and real estate investors have grown up buying and selling everything online. From clothes and shoes to televisions and cars, they are comfortable making almost all their major purchases right from their phones. So it’s only natural that eventually, they’d want to buy real estate online too. That’s why I believe that within the next 10 years, the majority of real estate transactions will be completed online. It’s what the next generation of home buyers will demand. And like all permanent changes, we need to embrace it.
If buyers use the Internet properly, then they don’t even have to get out of their pajamas. They can look at a satellite view of properties to see where they sit compared to freeways and other landmarks, and they can search for comparable properties. In fact, when it comes to residential property, from the time it comes on the market, they can completely vet it, write an offer, and get it to the seller’s real estate agent in under 90 minutes. In the old days, that process would take weeks. Some people have predicted that real estate agents and brokers will all lose their jobs in the near future. In fact, according to researchers at Oxford University, the potential for artificial intelligence computer algorithms replacing these jobs is estimated at between 97 and 99 percent. But I disagree. Because no matter what happens, real estate professionals will have a role. In fact, the biggest challenge faced by real estate professionals isn’t whether technology will make them obsolete, it’s coming up with a new value proposition that reflects how they can help consumers in a tech-driven marketplace. If you don’t evolve to meet the needs of your customers, you’ll make yourself obsolete — no matter what industry you’re in.
Technology already has largely altered the economics of entire subsectors of the real estate industry; it’s changed the way that real estate developers and the investment community operate. Most strikingly, the need for physical space is already shrinking across most real estate subsectors. Entire retail chains and whole sectors are disappearing — or, in the case of video stores, have already disappeared — as consumers across the globe move online. Meanwhile, as online shopping delivery times become shorter, the need for warehouses close to consumers grows. In 2017, an estimated 1,080 department and specialty stores could close and an estimated 10,000 jobs could be lost just if Macy’s alone closes. (Conversely, according to National Real Estate Investor, Amazon is expected to add over 100,000 jobs.) Now I believe that brick-and-mortar retail stores will always have a role to play. Although in sectors such as books, music, and video, the majority of goods will be bought online. Sectors like health, beauty, and homeware are likely to prove more resilient. The secret will be to combine physical and online retail on a single comprehensive operating platform. For example, shopping centers that combine traditional shopping with restaurants, entertainment, and social life are likely to endure. Meanwhile, the requirement for traditional office space is also likely to diminish. As my colleague Daymond John wrote in our last issue, shared office spaces are becoming the norm for most startups. And telecommuting is still in its infancy and likely to grow ISSUE 2 . 2017

I think these trends are likely to alter real estate economics more than is currently anticipated. As I wrote in Issue 4 of last year, this next generation has grown up in the digital world and will dominate consumer spending and work culture. Social networks will help to determine where and how people want to live, work, and recreate. At the same time, shrinking technological barriers will make online shopping evermore appealing (perhaps even through the aid of drone delivery). And telecommuting will become more practical as things like accessing database applications become easier via new tablet computers.

For developers, technological advancements will make building more practical. The technology behind smart appliances, smart energy, smart building management systems, integrated distribution management systems, and city-wide energy management systems are continually becoming more advanced and affordable. Technology even has the potential to transform real estate asset managers’ own operations. They’ll make far more use of “mobility” technology that facilitates telecommuting, while also embracing data management techniques such as data warehousing. With real estate — a business where small numbers of people manage large amounts of data relating to tenants, buildings, and so forth — it is natural to expect a significant increase in use of data analytics. One emerging tech need will be in catering to the needs of an aging JETSETMAG.COM
population with new ideas for assisted living, accessible facilities, and creating a healthy environment that keeps the elderly out of the hospital as long as possible. And as consumers become less predictable, psychographics – where real estate demand is mainly driven by consumer personalities, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles — are the new demographics for determining real estate success. According to Mark Stapp, Executive Director of the Master of Real Estate Development school at Arizona State University, psychographics (or the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests and lifestyles) arose out of the consumer products industry and are intimately tied to real estate value. Keep an eye on the psychographic indicators. They may prove to be a good measure for real estate trends in the coming future.

Opportunities for innovation using technology abound across the real estate industry. Some of the biggest near-term opportunities for innovation are:
Property Management: Several companies are already competing for dominance in this category, most offering software that helps property owners and management companies oversee and easily track commercial real estate assets. Industry-wide adoption is still below ten percent though, so lots of opportunity for growth remains. Research and Analytics: Traditionally, commercial real estate developers would hunker down with teams of analysts using HP calculators and gathering demographic research to evaluate an investment opportunity. Today, open data initiatives in municipalities across the country — combined with creative needle threading by software developers — are changing this landscape, and much of the data is readily available via monthly SaaS licenses.
Listing Services/Tech-Enabled Brokerages: Contrary to the incumbents in the residential market — which are predominantly media businesses generating revenue from advertising — a real opportunity exists for tech-enabled commercial listing services that could level the playing field, acting as marketplaces, and replacing the less-efficient, relationship-driven model that still persists today.
Mobile Applications: By the very nature of their business, real estate professionals are typically on-the-go, pound-the-pavement types. Brokers, landlords, appraisers, and developers are constantly running around visiting

One can assume that many of the most successful applications serving this market will have a healthy and robust mobile component.
Residential and Commercial Lending: Regulatory changes have opened up opportunities for innovation in lending, and real estate lending is by far the largest subcategory. We’re starting to see a number of emerging companies target this area in different ways. Residential and commercial lending are different animals so my guess is that we’ll see a dozen worthwhile challengers going after each individual market. The real estate industry is vast and we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface when it comes to opportunity for technologyenabled innovation. Given the dollars at risk and the proportion of the broader economy that real estate represents, there is every reason to believe the category will produce multiple “unicorns” worth billions in enterprise value. The past few years have been the most thrilling yet for real estate tech, and I am excited to see what the next few will bring. You should be too.

TEACHING OUR CHILDREN TO BECOME CAPITALISTS BY ROBERT KIYOSAKI

hat did school teach you about money? Unfortunately, for most people, the answer is “not much.” If you did learn anything, what you probably learned was something along the lines of: “Go to school, get a job, save money, buy a house, get out of debt, and invest for the long term in the stock market.” That might have been great advice for the Industrial Age, but it’s obsolete in the Information Age.
As my friend and colleague Daymond John writes on Page 74, the job market is rapidly changing, and automation and technology are prime contributing factors. Foxconn, Apple’s primary manufacturer, just announced it is ordering one million robots...to replace three million workers. Students all over the world are leaving school crippled deeply in student-loans — the most onerous of all debt — and are unable to find the mythical high-paying job that could amortize that student loan. Our problems are systemic. In the 1970s, a person with $1 million in savings earned 15% interest, or $150,000 a year. A person could live comfortably on that. Today, $1 million might earn 1.5% interest or $15,000 annually, hardly a living wage for a millionaire. Today, savers are the biggest losers. And in 2008, approximately 10 million homeowners learned, first-hand, that their home was not an asset when the real estate market crashed and the mortgage on the property was greater than the resale value of the home.

Altitude // Finance Rich Dad Poor Dad was self-published 20 years ago on April 8, 1997, my 50th birthday. Why was it self-published? Because every editor working for a giant publishing house was like my poor dad, a well-educated academic without much financial education. My rich dad’s lessons on financial education disturbed the editors’ rigid academic beliefs on money… and we all know how comforting our beliefs are, even if they’re obsolete. 20 years later, my rich dad’s lessons on money are truer and more disturbing than they were two decades ago. Today’s savers are even bigger losers as interest rates drop below zero in many countries and robots continue to replace workers. Yet parents continue to advise their kids to do as they did: “Go to school, get a job, and save money.” To defend their lack of financial education, academic types often say, “I studied economics in school,” or “My child’s school has a great economics program.” They will often cite famous economists like John Maynard Keynes, Milton Friedman, Ludwig von Mises, or Friederich Hayek. These economists’ theories may have held some water 50 years ago, but today they are a leaking dam about to

burst. I prefer to listen to two of history’s most influential economic philosophers: Karl Marx and Ayn Rand. Both have profound opinions and teach different but insightful lessons. Having experienced both capitalism and communism, Rand’s views on both economic systems are potent. Her heroes continually oppose the “parasites,” “looters,” and “moochers” who are proponents of big government, big labor, and income redistribution. Meanwhile, Marx’s socialist views were so disturbing he was forced to move out of Europe and into England. Luckily, he eventually landed work with the New York Daily Tribune, and subsequently found a receptive audience in America, writing about slavery, class struggle, and class consciousness. In overly simple terms, he defined class struggle as the conflict between three classes: the aristocracy, the bourgeoisie, and the proletariat. During the Agrarian Age, the aristocracy was the kings and queens who owned the land; during the Industrial Age, it was industrial giants such as Ford, Rockefeller, and Morgan; and today it’s the tech wizards like Zuckerberg, Bezos, and Brin. aristocracy is the entrepreneurs, the ones who are truly free. Parents should be teaching their kids to join that class, yet when they say “Go to school to get a job,” they are advising their child to be a proletariat — someone who sells their labor for money. If the child finds a high-paying job, they join the bourgeoisie, becoming a middle-class person happy with basic aspirational comforts such as a college education, a decent house, a nice car. They are comfortable being comfortable, keeping up with the Joneses. They are happy to drive past the slums, tenements, and dwellings of the proletariat, making sure their kids do not go to school with “those kids.” Most of the bourgeoisie have a high-paying job; many are selfemployed specialists such as doctors and lawyers, or small business entrepreneurs. But they do not own the real estate or the production. These people work for money. In Rich Dad Poor Dad, my rich dad’s #1 lesson was “The rich do not work for money.” Shockingly, when I mention it, most readers JETSETMAG.COM
do not recall this lesson. I believe this is because they have been programmed to “Go to school and find a job,” instead of being the person who owns the production. Our educational system still trains students to be proletariat and bourgeois — rather than the people who own the land, the businesses, and the capital...the aristocrats. It’s a small wonder that we have millions of people who, like my poor dad — a highly educated government bureaucrat who sincerely believed he was helping others — are dependent upon government to provide them with a job, a paycheck, and a pension. My poor dad died a poor man — unemployed, willing to work but unable to find a job. I used to feel bad for him; now I just feel bad for the system that failed to educate him properly. Because our global financial crisis begins in our schools. The United States spends billions on teacher education, yet the gap between rich and poor grows worse. As Marx wrote: “Workers of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains.” As Rand stated: “You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.” Think of that the next time you hear someone say to a child, “Go to school to get a job.” Best known as the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad — the #1 personal finance book of all time — Robert Kiyosaki has challenged and changed the way tens of millions of people around the world think about money. He is an entrepreneur, educator, and investor who believes that each of us has the power to makes changes in our lives, take control of our financial future, and live the rich life we deserve. With perspectives on money and investing that often contradict conventional wisdom, Robert has earned an international reputation for straight talk, irreverence, and courage and has become a passionate and outspoken advocate for financial education.

THE POWER OF SAYING NO BY DR. JOHN DEMARTINI
Are you taking command of your life? Are you filling your day with truly meaningful objectives and actions that fulfill and inspire you? Or are you letting the overruling world around you determine your fate?
I
f you do not fill your day with high-priority actions that inspire you, it will fill up with low-priority distractions that don’’t. If you do not bring order to your life, disorder will rule your destiny. The former will empower and vitalize you; the latter will disempower and drain you.
ISSUE 2 . 2017
95
Altitude // Inspire
Regardless of fortune, status, or success, we all have the same exact amount of time every day, 24 hours. That’s it. And getting our most important and inspiring actions done each day is not about managing time; it is about focusing our attention (and intention) wisely during the precious time we have. There is no such thing as true time management. It is simply how you utilize the time you have that determines your fulfillment level. Your time is your life, and your life planning and management system can be judged by the overall fulfillment it produces In order to focus on your central bullseye of long-term/highpriority actions, it is important to first take command of your daily schedule and become a master of planning and delegation. I’ll say it again, when you fill your day with high priority actions, it doesn’t fill up with low priority ones. The former awakens your forebrain’s executive center; the latter uncages the unruly and distracted animal within. Since there can be more than one kind of high priority action, it’s wise to define them accordingly by prioritizing what is thought to be the highest of the highest priorities in each area or aspect of your life.
96
JETSETMAG.COM
When you are unclear about what your true highest priorities are and have difficulty saying “no,” distractions can consume your time, attention, energy, focus, power of concentration, and productive capacity. Such distractions can derail you from greatly achieving or fulfilling what you would actually love. If you are ambitious and desire great achievements, you must first master the art of saying “no.” Give yourself permission to say “no.” Saying “no” to low priority distractions and yes to high priority actions is the key to success. Focus on and stick to what really matters most. You cannot please everyone, so don’t even begin to try. Saying yes because you can’t bear the short-term pain of saying “no” will cost you far greater opportunities down the road. Your time is finite. If you don’t make your life about what you would love to say “yes” to, it will become filled with what you intended to say “no” to. Embrace the trade-off. If the answer to whether to do something or not is not a clear and definite yes, then make it a “no.” Say “no” gracefully and you will receive respect. Consider the benefits of telling people “no” and clearing away any burdening emotions. Take command of your time before others do and tell them the truth — or they may keep pestering and derailing you. Your intentional limits can help you become limitless. Integrity and occasional tactful bluntness get the job done. True friends or colleagues will respect you and your priorities and will honor your time. Many distractions initiated by others are opportunistic in nature. Gracefully, respectfully, and reasonably saying “no” may temporarily disappoint the opportunist, but eventually it will lead them to respecting you even more. No one respects a pushover. FOREVER FEARLESS BY TY FAHLMAN AND TARA HITCHCOCK

Scarlett Johansson plays The Major in Ghost in the Shell Image courtesy of Paramount Pictures
carlett Johansson first captured America’s attention in 2003’s Lost in Translation. As an unsure newlywed confined to both the Park Hyatt Tokyo and a marriage to a man she doesn’t quite know how she feels about, the then-18-yearold Johansson shined. Giving a masterfully restrained performance, she was all at once vulnerable and honest and wise beyond her years. Even though the former child actress had appeared in literally a dozen prior films, it felt as though we were discovering a provocative new talent for the first time. For her work in the film she would take home a BAFTA award for Best Actress, and in the subsequent years, appear in several interesting films — some that met her potential (Match Point), others that fell short (A Love Song for Bobby Long). But regardless of the project, she was always captivating, always ineffably distinctive. ISSUE 2 . 2017

Then, something strange happened. In 2009, when actress Emily Blunt had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict, Johansson signed on to portray the raven-haired good guy assassin Black Widow in several films in the nascent Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Iron Man 2. It may have seemed like a strange move for an actress whose only prior foray into blockbuster territory was the underperforming Michael Bay flick The Island, but Johansson made the role her own, and her sexy, dangerous character was arguably the best thing about the rather by-the-numbers sequel. Then came The Avengers (2012), shattering box office records, and two years later a gung-ho turn as the titular character in Luc Besson’s wild, surprise runaway hit Lucy. Johansson had reinvented herself yet again, but this time as...an action star? In proving that she could successfully open an original action film on her own, Johansson accomplished something that few actors, regardless of gender, can pull off nowadays. And while to many who had followed her fascinating career, the notion of the acerbic teenager from Ghost World becoming a guntoting, backflipping, action hero may have seemed somewhat improbable, Johansson has managed to make her transitions seem effortless. Simultaneously portraying action heroes in outlandish science fiction films — like her latest, Ghost in the Shell — and, on a parallel track, giving the most brilliant, fearless performances of her career in bold, smaller pictures like Her, Under the Skin, and Don Jon, Johansson seems to be currently firing on all cylinders, operating in complete mastery of her myriad talents. And thus it seems like a perfect time for Jetset to catch up with the actress, as she’s in the midst of a massive, global press tour for Shell. “I like the idea though of taking risks in life,” she tells us. “It’s important to take risks...otherwise, you never know what’s on the other side.” The film is certainly not risk averse — it’s a remake of the beloved, classic anime of the same name, in which the main character is ostensibly a robot. But as the films director, Rupert Sanders, tells it, “The more difficult the role, the better actor you have to have...I think this is such a hard role...she was the only person for me who was able to deliver that performance.” Years of working in front of the camera on sets both large and small have certainly helped Johansson hone her skills. She was born in Manhattan and grew up attending elementary school in Greenwich Village, during which time her mother would take her to auditions. Acting came naturally to the precocious Johansson, and by the time she was eight, she was appearing Off Broadway alongside then-heartthrob Ethan Hawke. The next year she made her film debut in Rob Reiner’s North, and by the time she was 18, she had worked for acclaimed directors like Robert Redford (The Horse Whisperer) and The Coen Brothers (The Man Who Wasn’t There). Anecdotally, it would seem that growing up onscreen either produces two kinds of adults: introspective, seasoned professionals like Leonardo DiCaprio and Natalie Portman, or troubled, dysfunctional cautionary tales like Macaulay Culkin and Lindsay Lohan. Scarlett Johansson is unquestionably the former. “Scarlett is very professional,” says her Shell costar Juliette Binoche. “It feels like she was born on a set...it feels very easy for her.” But despite how effortless her performance as the sentient android Major may seem, one cannot discount the tremendous amount of work that goes into a physicallydemanding film like Ghost in the Shell. “I was training so much,” she says. “My workload was so intense, that I had to live a very disciplined life.” To prepare for the role, she expanded upon her Avengers training, adding new skills to her repertoire, like tactical training, how to clear rooms with the Special Forces precision. It was grueling, rigorous work, “But I like that,” she says, “I like the discipline of getting up every day and going to the gym and eating a specific way. It helps me focus on my job.” Still for her, the challenge extended beyond the physical. “Actually the emotional challenge of playing JETSETMAG.COM

this character was more difficult,” she says. “These questions...really haunt her: ‘Who am I?’ ‘What is my purpose?’ ‘If my body doesn’t belong to me, then who do I belong to?’” Asking tough existential questions is an integral part of Johansson’s creative process. It also proves that she not merely coasting to a paycheck with these types of high-dollar films. Her mental preparation is no less devoted than with a picture like Under the Skin, and the parallels between the two film’s protagonists are glaring. “I think it’s just rare to have a character driven story in this particular genre...[one] that deals with these existential questions of identity and what it means to be human.” The film is a dazzling, visually sumptuous ride. And while it might not be quite as good as the sum of its parts, it is a fitting tribute to its source material and certainly does ask some provocative questions. Moving forward, Johansson has a pretty diverse slate of films on the horizon. There’s of course the next two mammoth Avengers sequels, filming simultaneously (the first of which, subtitled Infinity War, hits next summer). In June she takes another career leap, appearing as the lead in the raunchy, Bridesmaids-esque comedy Rough Night alongside seasoned comic force and SNL All Star Kate McKinnon. (Johansson also recently made her fifth hosting

appearance on SNL, proving her adept comedic chops.) And as for a proverbial “one for me,” she also has a role in indie darling Wes Anderson’s next film, the ambitious, stop-motion animated Isle of Dogs, due out in 2018. The actress is certainly at a place where she can choose almost any project she desires. One might argue that her star has actually never been higher. And yet, despite her success, she remains resolutely grounded. “She’s very straightforward,” Binoche says. “She’s not behaving like a big star...she’s just a human being.” The exceptionally private, recently divorced mother of one’s biggest challenge may be balancing being a “normal human being” with the our culture’s insatiable desire to pry into the lives of its famous people. But at 32, Johansson seems wiser, and more focused than ever. You get the inclination she is less bothered by the trappings of her celebrity and more focused on being a great mother and continuing to tackle “risky” projects like Shell. Because “of course there’s some loss that comes with risk,” she tells us, “but there’s also the excitement of the game... whatever that is.” Tara Hitchcock frequently appears on Good Morning Arizona with her “At the Movies” celebrity segment and is the host of Harkins Theaters’ Behind the Screens (HarkinsTheaters.com/BehindTheScreens).

ince their launch in late 2015, Zetta Jet has been steadily gaining buzz in the private jet world, separating themselves from other charter companies in record time. With an elite stable of international aircraft including Bombardier Global 6000 (the first with Venue CMS), Global 5000, Challenger 650, and (soon) Global 7000; ultra-long-range transcontinental capabilities — they’re the first and only Part 135 operator authorized to conduct Polar flights — and a truly personalized approach to service (from a mix of cabin configurations and varying interiors to personalizing the offerings on-board); Zetta has quickly become a favorite choice of business elite and celebrities alike. “We are committed to providing an absolutely unparalleled level of service and customer experience,” Zetta owner and Director of Sales Matthew Walter tells me aboard one of their gorgeouslyoutfitted Global 6000s. Collectively, Zetta’s entire management team brings over a century of industry expertise and knowledge to the game and their “objective with Zetta was simple,” Walter says, “we set out to create the ideal charter company.” That means making the entire experience from booking to landing so effortless

and bespoke, that you could never imagine flying with anyone else again. “We go the extra mile to give our customers the high levels of service, dedication, comfort, and discretion they require,” he adds. It is for precisely those reasons that Zetta has so quickly attracted such a vast, international celebrity client list, with stars like Vin Diesel taking to Instagram to praise the company’s effortless transcontinental capabilities across the Pacific Rim. When we needed to get megastars Josh Brolin and Michael Phelps to Houston for the annual Big Game Big Give Super Bowl charity event (coverage on Page 122), Zetta graciously offered up one of their Globals and made the entire experience as seamless and luxurious as possible. It gave me a chance to experience Zetta’s impeccable service and unique flying experience first-hand, and as someone who has flown his fair share of chartered flights, I am quick to say that they are in a class of their own. No detail was overlooked. And with a recent merger with Advanced Air Management and Asia Aviation Company Pte Ltd, the company shows no signs of slowing down in the near future. AvYachts Offers An Easier Way to Yacht By Matthew Von Daven
110
JETSETMAG.COM
I
n our last issue’s Yacht Buyer’s Guide, we went in-depth on everything we felt you needed to know about building, buying, insuring, staffing, and maintaining a yacht. And as we made overtly clear, it is quite a costly and time-consuming undertaking. But I am happy to report that if you wish to enjoy the thrills of yacht ownership but skip those painstaking steps, there is a much simpler (and more affordable) rout to travel. Just as we always advocate fractional over outright jet ownership, fractional yacht ownership provides a less expensive, less headache-inducing alternative for those who wish to own a yacht. And innovative company AvYachts is at the forefront of this rising trend in the affluent community. AvYachts provides all the thrills of owning a yacht without all of the hassle. According to their calculations, the average yacht owner only uses their yacht approximately four to six weeks a year. That’s it. The rest of the time, it is docking somewhere costing you money. You can of course try and rent it out, but that’s a huge hassle, and either way, you’re still employing a crew. With AvYachts, for only twenty percent of the fixed costs, you can enjoy your own personal yacht for up to six weeks a year — resulting in a cumulative cost that is significantly less than with chartering. It’s also considerably easier. AvYachts provides you with your own dedicated concierge, who makes the entire process as simplistic and streamlined as possible. First, you select your very own yacht based on your needs — anything from a 112-footer to a 164-foot superyacht — from AvYachts impressive fleet of new or almost new Westports (each with state-of-the-art technology and amenities).
Then, you get to personalize your yacht, including personal photographs, mementos, favorite wines, and monogrammed linens. Your AvYachts concierge and crew will always ensure that whenever you board your yacht, it is exactly how you left it. Next, the fun part. AvYachts has a brilliantly easy-to-use app that makes sure your yacht is always just a few clicks away. You either hop on the app or pick up the phone and schedule your next adventure, and AvYachts handles the rest. Your AvYachts Concierge can even arrange VIP transportation services to and from your yacht, including private jet travel at special reduced member rates from their aviation partners’ massive global fleet. Members also receive invitations to exclusive luxury lifestyle events across the globe. And if a full fractional ownership package is too much for you, they also offer three- and seven-day “Paradise Getaway” cards for those who wish to have their own little AvYachts adventure. Ultimately, what AvYachts provides is yacht ownership minus the hassle at a fraction of the cost. We couldn’t’’t find any real drawbacks with their service, and their annual ownership fees are fixed at twenty percent of the average yearly cost of the yacht ownership. Think about that. That means that you can take to the seas for six weeks a year (or on the high end of how much time the average yacht user typically uses their vessel), for just one-fifth of the price and none of the hassle. itinerary perfectly catered to your relaxation and wellness goals. Each day then commences with an exquisite “Morning Delight Treatment” (such as a Thai Yoga Massage), followed by a health-conscious catered breakfast in your villa. Then, throughout your day, you are free to indulge in whichever treatments you may desire (such as the patented “Personal Hydro Experience” or “Rainforest Indulgence Treatment”), before the day culminates with a therapeutic “Sanctuary for the Senses” turndown experience. They work hard to keep you in a constant state of pure relaxation. Aside from the comprehensive spa experience, the resort offers an assortment of activities. There are six restaurants, each offering unique cuisine. The signature restaurant, Saffron, serves authentic Thai food with plenty of ambiance, while there are two separate boat experiences, Ixchel and the Tapas Cruise, for romantic dining on the water. And Banyan Tree Mayakoba is home to the 18-hole, Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón golf course, site of the only PGA Tour event in Latin America, the OHL Classic. In short, this is one resort that certainly deserves your attention. BanyanTree.com/Mayakoba

respite from everyday stress. Resort cuisine, aptly named modern coastal, is fine, storied, and comforting – rooted in sustainable, locally grown and harvested ingredients. And an overfull complement of staff and wilderness guides provide respectfully intimate attention and anticipatory service to ensure your stay is both meaningful and enriching. An unparalleled menu of equestrian, marine, hiking, fishing, interpretive, and restorative activities changes daily and is personalized to suit you and you alone. hen it comes to American sports car racing, there is perhaps no greater test than the historic Rolex 24 at Daytona. Legendary watchmaker Rolex has been the primary sponsor of the event since 1992, and their acute attention to detail is omnipresent. The renowned, 24-hour endurance race emblematizes the extent of Rolex’s longstanding relationship with motorsports, and for good reason. This year’s race took place from January 27th-29th, and Jetset was invited as a VIP guest of Rolex for an event that represented the finest in both luxury hospitality and performance motorsports. After an intimate tour of Pit Lane from racing legend Hurley Haywood and a hot lap around Daytona’s legendary banked oval and road course in a Viper ACR, I joined the teams on the starting grid for an up-close look at each of the 55 cars entered in the race. Familiar luxury brands Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Lexus, Mercedes, JETSETMAG.COM
Winning Team: Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R
Porsche, and, in a much-anticipated return, American-bred Cadillac were all on-site to compete for this year’s trophy. Following the iconic “start your engines” command the race commenced to roars from the high-performance engines on Pit Lane and the cheers of enduring fans. The weather quickly shifted gears and rain became the driving force behind each team’s strategy with the #10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R prototype ultimately taking home the overall win. Other notable winners included Alegra Motorsports’ Porsche 911 GT3 R and Chip Ganassi Racing’s impressive #66 Ford GT. As it continues to cement the legacies of racing icons, the future looks bright with Rolex at the helm of this celebrated gathering of the world’s finest sports car brands and most esteemed racing teams. If you’ve never been to a high-powered, ultra-prestigious, historymaking race, then the Rolex 24 is an event you simply must attend.

Celebrating the Legacy of the Greatest By ty fahlman
f

ew figures have had the type of impact on the world that Muhammad Ali has had. As a fighter, he was legendary, with Sports Illustrated naming him the greatest athlete of the 20th Century. As an activist, he was iconoclastic, sparking change across the nation. And as a philanthropist, he was inspirational, raising hundreds of millions of dollars to combat Parkinson’s and other diseases around the globe. In short, he was a man who touched countless lives and enacted sizable change. His legacy casts a mighty shadow. That shadow was certainly felt on March 18 in Jetset and Ali’s hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona, as the stars turned out to pay tribute to The Greatest and raise money for Parkinson’s and other noble causes. In its 23 years, Celebrity Fight Night has raised over $127 million dollars, and it’s always an incredible evening of entertainment and celebration. But there was something extra special this year, the first since Ali’s passing. As 12-time Fight Night host Reba McEntire told me, “Tonight, he’s not in his wheelchair...tonight JETSETMAG.COM
he’s with us.” In addition to McEntire, Harrison Ford, Michael Phelps, Sharon Stone, and countless others came to pay tribute. (Even icons who couldn’t be there like Paul McCartney, Robert DeNiro, and Arnold Schwarzenegger taped messages played during the event.) It seemed everyone in attendance had fond or inspirational memories of Ali. “He never bit his tongue,” NFL icon and avowed philanthropist Larry Fitzgerald told me, “he spoke up for people who couldn’t speak for themselves...he’s the type of person you want to emulate.” Perhaps the most emotional speeches of the night came directly from Ali’s family. First, from Lonnie, his wife of over 30 years, who was at his side as he battled Parkinson’s. She told the crowd, “There’s such a love in this room...I know Muhammad’s here.” And then from Ali’s grandson, young Jacob Wertheimer. Soon to be attending Harvard, he impressed the entire room with his grace, eloquence, and composure. In summary, it was an incredible evening to honor an incredible man, and Jetset was honored to be a part of it.

BIG GAME BIG GIVE RAISES OVER A MILLION DOLLARS ONCE AGAIN BY TY FAHLMAN
W 136
JETSETMAG.COM
hile all Super Bowl parties are fun, only one raises millions of dollars for a number of wonderful charities, and it’s the one that Jetset is proud to be involved with once again. In its eighth year, Big Game Big Give has established itself as the most exclusive and refined of all Super Bowl soirees. Voted the “number one Super Bowl party” by ESPN The Magazine, the invitation-only event has attracted such celebrity hosts and guests as Mark Wahlberg, Adam Sandler, and Aaron Rodgers. Part of what separates BGBG is the fact that (unlike almost all other Super Bowl parties) celebrities are not paid for their attendance — they show up for the cause, and are proud to be giving back.
This year’s event was headlined by Academy-Award nominated actor Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), who told me that hosting the party was part of a concerted effort to focus more on philanthropy. “This is me saying ‘yes’ instead of saying ‘no,’” the admittedly-shy actor told me. Also saying “yes” were a number of charitable celebrities including all-time great Olympian Michael Phelps; Friends-alum David Schwimmer; future Hall of Fame running back Adrian Peterson; and Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe-winning rapper/actor/poet Common, who performed a lively set. Getting all of these A-list stars in one place at one time can be a logistical nightmare, and that’s why we have to extend a special thanks to our friends at Zetta Jet for going above and behind by lending us two of their large jets to help get Brolin and Phelps to and from Houston for the party. Thanks are also in order for avowed philanthropists Michael and Lisa Holthouse for graciously hosting the event at their palatial Houston estate. Overlooking the water, the stunning home provided the 700 attendees the perfect backdrop for this elegant celebration, while the décor and music embraced the Texas locale. The silent auction contained almost every conceivable piece of sports memorabilia (including a jersey signed by the man who would
be victorious the next day, Tom Brady). Meanwhile, Schwimmer did an outstanding job emceeing the event, shepherding the thrilling live auction with aplomb. Notable items for bid included a trip to next year’s premiere for the third Avengers movie (in which Brolin plays the villain), not one but two separate walk-on parts in Brolin’s next film, George and Tammy, a custom BBO Poker Table signed by every celebrity in attendance, and two separate entrances into the World Series of Poker Main Event complete with months of training by former WSOP champ Jamie Gold. Gold also co-hosted (alongside avid poker player Phelps) perhaps the most exciting way to donate your money this year, a private poker tournament following the event. Emceed by the always-entertaining Rob Riggle (whom I had the good fortune of being seated next to), the tournament was a tremendous success, raising hundreds of thousands and allowing guests a chance to test their luck alongside celebrities until the wee hours of the morning. In all, with over a million dollars raised, Big Game Big Give was a resounding triumph yet again. For information on next year’s event or possible sponsorship opportunities, visit GivingBack.org.
