ulturally speaking, two things seem to happen in an era of rapid social change and transformation. Artistic creativity peaks, while contrarians and antiheroes come into their own. We collectively love to witness the rise of the rebel: those who renounce pedantic codes of conduct and welcome uncertainty without fear. We dedicate this issue of Jetset to such intrepid outliers, the bold revolutionaries who sidestep the status quo. We’ve tapped our boldest, bravest voices to contribute to this issue. Daymond John’s How to Launch a Successful Brand details his devotion to surrounding himself with the best collaborators and mentors. Dr. Demartini’s feature on subjective bias and unrealistic projections one can impose onto others is a great exploration of mastering your own narrative. Barry Labov’s Matching Patterns in Business demystifies how companies come up with the “next big thing”, giving readers invaluable insight into solving challenges by identifying patterns. We can’t think of a more timely occasion to publish such perspectives, especially Ken McElroy’s engaging article on the difference between the mentality of consumers and producers in Mindset Matters. I remain incredibly proud of what the Jetset team has created on the pages that follow. In our lifestyle coverage, we present the dramatic reveal of Maison Hennessy’s Paradis Impérial in Shanghai. We’re also thrilled to share a portfolio of jaw-dropping resorts from around the globe in our travel editor Si Si Penaloza’s Genre-Defying Hotels. Lifestyle guru Colin Cowie brings us an inside look at private jet hospitality in High Altitude Hosting. Grand Cayman’s copious delights come into divine focus in A Moveable Feast for the Senses. I task our team with bringing readers fresh, reverse thinking in every issue. So much is shifting around us in the world of politics, business, pop culture, and social media as we cultivate creative content under our phenomenally talented team. From our profile of acting legend Samuel L. Jackson to our ongoing Jetset contributor Robert Kiyosaki, we shine the spotlight on inspiring personalities that I hope will provoke robust conversation. It’s an honor to feature an acting legend like Jackson in an issue brimming with bold ideas. Sincerely,

SkyFan Business Jet
Business jet design has been stagnating for decades—a simple tube, wings, and two engines—nothing disruptive— just evolutionary. Frontline Aerospace’s SkyFan eight passenger clean sheet design will change this by radically improving the overall aircraft efficiency. SkyFan has solved the long-standing challenges of business jets—namely dramatic range and productivity improvements, fuel efficiency, noise reduction with short takeoff and landing. Its centerline ducted fan radically improves propulsive efficiency and when coupled to mature GE turboshaft engines enables SkyFan’s massive range (5,200 nm) with a thrust to weight ratio near 1 to 1—fighter jet performance. All while achieving fuel economy of $1 per nautical mile. These innovations create SkyFan’s revolutionary capabilities.

t’s been more than eight decades since Jean Bugatti’s highlyacclaimed Type 57 SC Atlantic was unveiled to the world. The coveted model’s cutting-edge design, rendered by the eldest son of the brand’s founder, set the stage for the future of the renowned automaker and is still regarded as one of the most valuable automobiles in the world. Perhaps Bugatti’s unprecedented automotive instincts led him to keep one of the four rare Type 57 SC Atlantic coupes. His personal vehicle, affectionately named “La Voiture Noire” (translated to “The Black Car”), would ultimately go missing amid the intense war-time climate of the World War II era and its whereabouts remain a mystery to this day. With only three Type 57 SC Atlantics still in existence, the elusive model sits atop virtually every avid collector’s wish list and continues to increase in value, with some experts estimating its worth in the hundreds of millions. This year, in connection with its 110th anniversary celebration, the legendary nameplate has unveiled a remarkable new “La Voiture Noire,” a stunning and entirely fitting homage to the original luxury coupe and its beloved creator. JETSETMAG.COM
With an elongated frame and aggressively lower stance, the new La Voiture Noire’s one-of-a-kind design exudes Bugatti elegance and sophistication in its purest form. Featuring an artfully crafted profile with perfectly integrated bumpers and a windshield that melds seamlessly into the side windows, La Voiture Noire is certainly one of the most beautiful works of automotive haute couture to date. From the intricately interwoven carbon-fiber body that’s been meticulously coated in an immaculate deep black finish, to the provocative single piece tail light and illuminated Bugatti badging, La Voiture Noire epitomizes the essence of luxury. A single center line fin running from end to end helps meld the uniquely stylish design of the highly-revered Type 57 SC Atlantic into its modern successor. Under the hood, La Voiture Noire inherits the same 8.0L W16 workhorse that’s helped establish the brand’s unrivaled reputation as the premier force in supercar manufacturing. The 1500hp powertrain configuration is on par with Bugatti’s other impressive and highly successful models, while still providing what is likely the most exquisite and perfectly curated Grand Touring car in history. With a final price tag of $18.9 million (USD), the ultra-luxurious La Voiture Noire is certainly a unique work of art and now holds the title of “world’s most expensive new car,” after overtaking the Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta and Rolls Royce Sweptail, both of which we covered just last year. Only one rendition of the new La Voiture Noire will ever be brought to life, an enduring and fitting tribute to the legendary vision of Jean Bugatti. Unsurprisingly, one fortunate connoisseur has already called dibs on this extraordinary supercar about which the rest of us can merely dream. ISSUE 2 . 2019 2017

THREE CREATIONS BY MASTERS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE PROFICIENCIES REACH THE ‘POINT OF ELEGANCE’ BY ANNE-MARIE PRITCHETT
T
he ‘point of elegance’ is the occasion where everything comes together at the exact right moment. For Maison Hennessy, it’s when the art of alchemy meets the art of selection; for international artist Arik Levy, whose exquisitely designed new crystal decanter serves as a vessel for the finest Hennessy blend, Paradis Impérial, it’s the moment when you cannot add or subtract anything from a creation; and for Maison Louis Vuitton, it’s when heritage, expressions of creativity, and the art of travel harmonize into a perfectly tailored masterpiece, such as the Hennessy Paradis Impérial Trunk and Nomad Case.

“When Arik designed the facets of the carafe, it wasn’t just to create attention. It was also a way to almost make it like a diamond.” - Bernard Peillon, chairman & CEO Hennessy
Arik Levy
It’s about time Paradis Impérial gets its place in the spotlight. For more than two centuries, an unbroken family of Master Blenders—the Fillioux family—has been cultivating, aging, tasting, and watching over the Hennessy family’s vineyards and eaux-de-vie library to assess future potential and to determine the best blends, the proper timing, and the best aging methods. Of the 10,000 eauxde-vie in any given harvest, only 10 have the potential to one day join the impeccable blend of Paradis Impérial. Renaud Fillioux de Gironde, the eighth-generation Master Blender, works with a multigenerational tasting committee to do just that. With a visionary spirit, he draws on his own knowledge and emotions while on the quest to find the piece de resistance. And, finally, it is here—the rework of Paradis Impérial—strong in heritage, ready to bask in its newfound glory. Moët Hennessy gave quite the introduction. The setting for the rerelease of Paradis Impérial, its opulent new decanter, and tribute bespoke Louis Vuitton travel trunk was stunning. Hennessy took to Shanghai to honor the special Cognac’s
legacy while freshening its look and giving it an artisanal trunk symbolic of the discerning drinker’s taste for travel and adventure. The ensemble embodies a lifestyle and a way of looking at the world—sharing values of tradition, authenticity, and quality with a passion for precision and elegance. Best known as ‘the Paris of the Far East,’ Shanghai was the ideal place for the Discovery Tour that took a distinct group of guests and international media on a journey to explore these extraordinary works of craftsmanship. This is a city deeply rooted in tradition yet open to a world of innovation and a Hennessy-style appreciation of the French art de vivre. It was nearly 150 years ago when Hennessy was first imported to China. The connection between the Cognac house and its dynamic Asian counterpoint naturally made sense as both share a convergence of past and present, tradition and innovation to create new pathways to the future. Hennessy’s obsession with excellence is apparent in everything they do. There is a heavy emphasis on creating both a conceptual and an emotional connection to their approach, which is why the collaboration with artist Arik Levy was ideal. “Arik does not do anything by chance. Everything is extremely intellectualized. When he designed the facets of the carafe, it wasn’t just to create attention. It was also a way to almost make it like a diamond. The crystal refracts light on the blend,” said Bernard Peillon, chairman & CEO Hennessy. ISSUE 2 . 2019

“When you come into action with the carafe, then you are igniting the whole system of generosity, exchange, feelings, friendship, family, tension or relaxation.” - Arik Levy The emotional connection, though, plays an even bigger role in Levy’s philosophy when designing any of his works and installations—which can be seen at prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. Levy is an artist who feels the world is about people, not objects. “When you come into action with the carafe, then you are igniting the whole system of generosity, exchange, feelings, friendship, family, tension or relaxation, and this is through a service ceremony and its different tools, each of which is treated like a sculpture.” The celebration in honor of Paradis Impérial and its ensemble was all about embracing this emotional connection. It truly was a sensual adventure starting with the unveiling of the Louis Vuitton trunk, which was designed to hold four magnums of Paradis Impérial, along with exclusive crystal vials and tulip glasses for tasting, and a single-magnum travel case nestled within the body of the trunk; a configuration allowing as many as 18 people to appreciate the Cognac experience together.

JETSETMAG.COM
Guests were then treated to the most exquisite tasting menu paired with the star of the show, Paradis Impérial—a graceful Cognac blend with a light structure and unique golden hue that features a delicate bouquet of crisp floral notes tinged with a smoky, spicy accent. This entrancingly luscious blend was transported in Levy’s striking vessel that balances curve and tension with a thoughtful faceted design. The greatest moment of the evening came with the service ritual where each guest, by their own hand, poured the premium Cognac from a crystal vial into their tasting glass creating a personal intimacy with the moment. Just as cigar aficionados seek out the perfect balance of flavors and musicians listen for the perfect pitch, the Hennessy Master Blender and Cognac enthusiasts around the world search for the crown jewel of eaux-de-vie blends that has reached the ‘point of elegance.’ Travel to Cognac to enjoy a special tour of the Founder’s Cellar and a Paradis Impérial tasting from April to October by reservation.

Inglenook, The Legacy and Art of Wine
By tami austin
t
here are many of us who can appreciate a good bottle of wine and some of us can acknowledge we may feel the same about a great film. After all, both can be interpreted as an art form with different forms of expression, but does all of this come easier to an Oscar-winning filmmaker? At Inglenook, located in Napa Valley, the art of bringing the right team together to produce extraordinary wine seems to go hand in hand with the filmmaking success of Francis Ford Coppola. Known for iconic films such as the The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now, Coppola has achieved success on many levels. Although he’s not a winemaker, he’s currently been in the wine business over 40 years; comparable to the 50 years he’s dedicated to filmmaking. Inglenook, founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, was Napa’s first estate winery. In the 1930s, Niebaum’s grandnephew, John Daniel, Jr., inherited the chateau and vineyards which he ran for twenty years. In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola and his wife, Eleanor, purchased part of the estate which included 1,400 acres and Niebaum’s Victorian home and carriage house. They joined their name with Niebaum’s and the property became the Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery. In 1995, the Coppolas purchased the remaining part of the original property, which included the Inglenook Chateau and approximately 90 acres of vineyards. Today, Inglenook remains the largest contiguous estate on the famed Rutherford Bench known for producing Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2011, with a vision of reuniting the historical Inglenook name with its vineyards, Coppola’s intention to honor the estate’s heritage and restore its legacy as America’s greatest wine estate was graciously fulfilled.

The Taste 2015 Rubicon — This Cabernet with a hint of Merlot is medium to full bodied with deep red, bold, color. COCKTAILS AND CANAPES AT CRUISING ALTITUDE BY COLIN COWIE

lying private is one of the ultimate luxuries, but there’s more to luxury than flying private. How you fly private is very important. If you own your own plane, invariably you have beautiful crystal, china, and silver on board. I see all the usual things every time I’m on a plane—it’s the same crystal glass or the same white plate with silver trim. Usually, it’s décor that came from the owner or someone on the staff. How is it that you want to entertain, and what is the spirit in which you’ll entertain? I co-founded Bespoke Host to help jet setters and the executive elite entertain with panache. We assess the interior of the plane while learning about your personal style and taste. Do you sway towards tradition or enjoy the appeal of modern and minimalistic? Or perhaps you prefer more ornate statement pieces. JETSETMAG.COM
For more than two decades, celebrated event designer and producer Colin Cowie has created some of the most talked about parties and events around the world. With clients like Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Ryan Seacrest, heads of state and foreign dignitaries, Cowie provides luxury experiences for the most celebrated people. He has designed and produced every conceivable type of celebration— from cocktail receptions to product launches to royal weddings. Having spanned the globe multiple times, he has traveled 13 million miles in search of the finest and most authentic experiences for his clients. A regular contributor on the Today show, Cowie provides expertise on event planning and lifestyle advice. He is also the author of 10 books on lifestyle and entertaining.
No matter the brief, my co-founder Christian Zavala is dedicated to delivering the best. Bespoke Host has searched and scoured the market from the traditional, high-end brands to the artisanal craftsmen who make custom-made, hand-beaten silverware, china, linens, and stemware. We come up with the look and the scheme for you, create the mood boards, and then personalize them to rather stunning specs. Everything from embroidered napkins to hand-selected monogrammed china is thoughtfully curated and brought on to reflect your own unique DNA. The great thing about this is that these bespoke elements become a part of your brand—they live on your plane. If you’re chartering a plane with Latitude 33 Aviation, Bespoke Host can customize a portable case for you that’ll house dinnerware for up to 8 people, beautifully embroidered or engraved and ready for travel. Founded and run by current, professional pilots, Latitude 33 offers one of the newest and most luxurious fleets of private jets available. When you get on the plane, you hand the case off to your attendant and take your seat. At the end of your trip, everything is cleaned, neatly packed and ready as you disembark. Like Bespoke Host, Latitude 33 Aviation offers expertise to make aircraft ownership and private jet charter service more enjoyable and personal. Raising the bar for luxury travel, they assist with aircraft management to facilitate smoother, stress-free aircraft ownership. Showing off a degree of craft cocktail polish is the new hallmark of high end entertaining. It’s one thing to have all the chic accessories, but quite an empty illusion if the contents taste like swill. For those who fear coming off like a poseur at the bar, we tapped Alex Chien, North American Brand Ambassador, House of Bombay for best practices on mile high mixology. “Chances are if you’re flying private anywhere, you’re usually flying someplace warm,” he muses gamely. “I like to “cocktail pack” for two drinking occasions: fun and heart. For fun occasions, I pack Gin, Lemon, Sparkling Wine, and Honey. Nothing says yacht weekend more than a French 75. For heart drinking moments, or quieter times: Gin, Martini Bitter, and Martini Rubino vermouth. I don’t know a better way to wind down the night than a Negroni because it’s a digestif, your tummy will thank you.”
This goes for yachts as well—whether it’s formal entertaining or a casual get together—you can select the most exquisite and versatile acrylic ware that’s perfect for a day on the water. Bespoke Host will even bring in gorgeous non-floral centerpieces, candles, and tasteful décor items. These, of course, come with a manual, so boat staff knows exactly how to bring our curated tabletop to life! All in all, it creates a seamless way to bring luxury with you anywhere you go. If you are more inclined to take on the task yourself, Christofle is your go-to one-stop shop. They have an incredible collection of china, crystal, and silver and are able to engrave and personalize everything from ice buckets to flatware. I particularly like their flatware caddies – they are compact, chic, practical and come in a variety of colors and styles. Another great resource for amazing tabletop collections is the 7th floor at Bergdorf Goodman. If you are seeking curation for tabletop and entertaining needs, Jung Lee in the new and trendy Nomad NYC is the place to go. ISSUE 2 . 2019

re the stars aligning for a resurgence in seafaring luxury geared towards the richest people on the planet? What recently I observed in Cayman’s marinas indicates an affirmative trend; attracting stylish multimillion-dollar recreational vessels, the islands stand at the ready for the increased revenue and prestige such fleets bring the islands. Grand Cayman, largest of the sister islands, is home to the capital of the Caymans, George Town. This cosmopolitan hub bustles with chic eateries, high-end shopping, art galleries, and museums. Three strikingly beautiful islands create the Caymans, consisting of Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. A haven for watersports enthusiasts, the translucent, deep water offers incredible diving, fishing, and yacht anchorage opportunities. Boldface A-listers, athletes, and business elite tend to gravitate to these islands to enjoy a luxury lifestyle without drawing unwanted attention. Tax benefits, privacy, preferred crewing requirements; all compelling reasons for high-net-worth clients to register offshore in Cayman. As a haven for wealthy foreign yacht owners to register their sea-going palaces, Cayman offers many of the same economic advantages as offshore banking. JETSETMAG.COM
The true gold carat Cayman experience? The culinary event of the year is not in San Francisco or New York; look no further than the annual Cayman Cookout. Every January, Cayman becomes the culinary epicenter of the western hemisphere when Michelin-starred celebrity chefs take over kitchens up and down the iconic Seven Mile Beach. Four days of drool-worthy experiences create an up close and personal vibe, unlike any other food festival I have attended. The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman once again hosted the Eleventh Annual Cayman Cookout. Created and hosted by esteemed Chef Eric Ripert – co-owner of Le Bernardin in New York City and Blue by Eric Ripert at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman. This year, Ripert was joined by an impressive roster of globally recognized culinary stars including José Andrés, Dominique Crenn, Emeril Lagasse, Nancy Silverton, and Andrew Zimmern. With events spread out across the hotel, each boasting a stunning location — is there anything sweeter than watching Chef Nancy Silverton of Mozza whip up her take on classic sauces with your toes tucked in the sand? We think not. Marrying the RitzCarlton Grand Cayman’s robust culinary vibe with the brain trust of the world’s most esteemed Michelin ranked chefs and tastemakers,
Cayman Cookout delivers a truly unparalleled celebration of epicurean expressionism and artistry. Staying at the divine RitzCarlton makes the most sense as a majority of the events (with the exception of a few off-site experiences) are held there. While at the festival, why not explore making Grand Cayman your winter escape? Camana Bay is worth a closer look, master planned over 685 acres, this New Urbanist mixed-use community spans sea to sound, offering a place to live, explore, relax and get inspired. Take a trip up the destination’s 75-foot observation tower, where you can admire beautiful sunken mosaics and sublime views. Promoting walkability, connectivity and sustainability through thoughtful and beautiful design, a visit to Camana Bay is a great diversion from overindulging at Cayman Cookout. What I loved most about the Cayman Cookout was the intimate experiences with these awarded chefs. With each event, attendance is capped, giving you an opportunity to interact with each chef. The Ritz-Carlton presents a rare opportunity to see them unbridled and hear their story. Pull up a front seat and learn from the best, all while feasting on tropical variations of Michelin starred signature dishes.
“The Cayman Cookout has evolved to embrace Cayman’s expanding gastronomic culture,” Ripert reflects as we kick back with a coffee in the hotel lounge. With world-renowned Ripert as the host, this food festival will always remain communal and intimate. You can casually chat up legendary luminaries like Emeril Lagasse while he personally serves you ridiculously divine bites. “While there are many prestige events in the line up,” Ripert notes, “the now legendary Barefoot BBQ and laid back Beach Bash create distinct avenues for getting up close and personal with the pros.” He’s very protective of the vibe and feeling of the festival, preferring to keep it convivial as opposed to institutional. He’s surely succeeded, as I found myself dancing barefoot in the sand next to José Andrés as fireworks detonated overhead at Barefoot BBQ. This feast week is a wholly distinct travel opportunity, further sealing Cayman as the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean. The interactive weekend features a top-notch Paramount Caviar lunch, tour of Stingray City, Champagne dinners, and unique epicurean experiences - all presented with chic Caribbean barefoot elegance on Cayman's famous platinum sand beaches.

Newfoundland, Canada A renown architectural beacon and a compelling model for preserving an imperiled culture, Fogo Island is a metaphysical metaphor for ethical travel. The Inn is central to a broader experiment in development, aimed at revitalizing a community hit hard by the collapse of Newfoundland’s cod fishery. The anticipation of the summer season on Fogo Island ushers in feelings of sweet anticipation for anyone who has dreamt of chasing reinvention at this highly lauded Atlantic coast jewel. Intrepid travelers who have made a pilgrimage to experience the rich, centuries-old history of this “Salty Narnia” come away enlightened. Fogo’s wildlife, visionary hospitality and unique way of life has a way of leaving an indelible mark. INSIDER TIP: Zita Cobb is the brains and chief bankroller behind the Fogo Island Inn. The inn and its artists-in-residence program is a savvy bid to use culture and tourism to revive the island. Fogo’s food is the main draw; Executive Chef Jonathan Gushue recently took part in a food-centered discussion at The New School in New York, following a soldout dinner at The James Beard House.

THE MANTA RESORT
Pemba Island, Tanzania Nothing defies logic like underwater living. The Manta Resort recently unveiled its Underwater Room, a three-floor suite that floats among hypnotic corals, featuring a submerged master bedroom with panoramic windows to appreciate local aquatic species. Located on the tropical Pemba Island in Zanzibar, the resort’s main draw is the natural reef lying just off its beach, a haven for divers and snorkelers alike. According to the resort, some coral has already begun forming on the room’s anchoring lines and a few of the reef’s more unusual inhabitants, like octopus and Spanish dancers, are easily spotted.

LAUCALA ISLAND
The Island of Taveuni, Fiji Red Bull magnate Dietrich Mateschitz spared no expense to create one of the world’s top tropical private islands. Laucala boasts the most stunning architecture in the South Pacific, not to mention an organic farm, a village of friendly staff, mechanics to service private jets, and a James Bond-worthy collection of posh marine vessels. Laucala certainly changed my perception of the luxury category in Fiji, or anywhere else for that matter. It is one of a handful of hotels I have visited that defies categorization. The island operates at a staggeringly high level but still feels completely natural.
INSIDER TIP: The island’s par-72 golf course gives players one jaw-dropping vista after another. It was designed by David McLay Kidd, the bright young architect who wowed aficionados with The Castle Course in St. Andrews, Scotland. Carved from a jungle that could dwarf King Kong, the course is ripe with drama and stunning elevations.
AMANJIWO
Central Java, Indonesia Nestled in a natural amphitheater, Amanjiwo faces the world’s largest Buddhist monument, the ninth-century Borobudur. Amanjiwo is a cultural crucible renowned for its architecture, the heart of which is a circular monolith, crafted from local limestone and rising to a domed centerpiece. The atmospheric entrance of the main structure was designed to frame the Borobudur UNESCO World Heritage Site in the distance, with adjacent soaring portals framing four encircling volcanoes. Visually arresting, to say the least. Only 30 guest suites are laid out in two crescent formations rimmed with high limestone walls, crawling with spider lilies.

CHIVA SOM
A hotel of beguiling extremes, La Mamounia takes you from luxuriously sublime to ludicrously simple pleasures in mere minutes. From the sybaritic splendor of the lobby to perfectly executed turndown service, this is where Dionysus himself would do date night. Imagine Mosque Koutoubia on steroids and you’re halfway there. The posh unveiling of this Arab-Andalusian masterpiece after a $170-million renovation drew out the star power of Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Orlando Bloom, and Salma Hayek.
Imagine being eye to eye with a canopy of leafy trees at Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses hotel in Kaikoura, New Zealand. Treetop-high suites are luxurious, with an inviting king-size bed in the center, and ridiculously impressive views. One end of the sky-high cabin features a wood-burning fireplace with two comfy chairs and dramatic vistas of snowcapped mountains; the far side leads you to a smartly designed ensuite, looking out to the seascape. Featuring an outdoor pool and a private deer park, this idyllic retreat was made for kicking back in wonderland.
Chiva Som has become the gold standard by which all destination spas are measured. Personalized programs cover everything from weight management and smoking cessation to skin rejuvenation and anti-aging regimens. Healthy food is a ritual here, and for many the dining is a main draw. The award-winning international spa cuisine is detoxifying, fat and salt-free and still somehow divine. The kitchen team spends their days devising low-fat ways of producing chocolate cake and ice cream, to much gastric fawning. Many ingredients are homegrown in Chiva Som’s own organic gardens.
Marrakech, Morocco
INSIDER TIP: The Moorish intricacy of La Mamounia’s 27,000-square-foot spa features fine Moroccan craft, arabesque screens and luminous mosaic tile. This is a spa retreat where guests disappear for hours on end. Navigating a rather palatial courtyard pool edged by ornamental lantern towers, the dark aesthetic ushers in an embryonic, deep-space spa odyssey.
Kaikoura, New Zealand
INSIDER TIP: The dining room at the Lodge is at the heart of the Hapuku experience. The Lodge’s Executive Chef Fiona Read is a powerhouse talent, gathering provisions from local gardeners, sourcing the best meat and fish from the farm or fisherman. Feasting on her simply exceptional dishes deepens an appreciation of what New Zealand has to offer.
Hua Hin, Thailand
INSIDER TIP: Several high-profile athletes have put Chiva Som at the top for body conditioning. Serena Williams checked in just after her first Melbourne Open win; David and Victoria Beckham are also big fans. Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, Jude Law and Hugh Grant have also come to be pampered into oblivion. ISSUE 2 . 2019

This barefoot luxury retreat caters to global celebrities and dignitaries drawn to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The trophy of this geographic jewel box is the privatelyowned Bedarra Island – one of Australia’s most coveted stays, catering to the most indulgent interpretation of “me time” imaginable. Just nine architecturally magnificent villas overlook the beach, surrounded by forest. The Point Villa, set in seclusion above monolithic boulders with crashing waves below, is favored by honeymooners. Blessed with fresh water springs to fill its pools and landscape, solar hot water also adds to Bedarra’s sustainable chic.
INSIDER TIP: No other island does privacy quite like Bedarra. Speaking volumes of the island’s sterling “fortress of solitude” reputation, both Jennifer Aniston and Salma Hayek checked in post-haste following break ups with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, respectively. When Cameron Diaz was between boyfriends, Bedarra got her as far from tinseltown as logistically possible. Winning favor with European royals, the isle’s physical inaccessibility makes it paparazzi-proof.

ave you ever lost your car keys and tried to find them by mentally walking through where you’d been since you last had them? It’s actually an effective method of finding something you’ve lost. Why? A lot of it has to do with how the brain stores and recalls information contextually, or based on the setting and circumstances surrounding an event. This way of storing information is what helps us identify patterns quickly, which is important in decision making. The more skilled we are at recognizing patterns, the better decisions we can make.
52
JETSETMAG.COM
Pattern matching is the brain’s natural tendency to see patterns in what we perceive, then to make connections with the patterns we already have stored in our memory to develop new patterns. We try to understand what happens in life by matching it to something similar that’s happened to us in the past. This pattern match then informs our responses. It’s not something we have to consciously think about; rather it’s simply the way our minds work. For example, you walk into a restaurant and are shown to a table. You see a chair at the table and sit down. How do you know it’s a chair? Your brain recognizes the pattern of what a chair looks like, whether it’s blue with four legs or grey with a pedestal. Another example is learning to read. The brain identifies patterns in the letters and how they’re arranged to form words. Then it recognizes patterns in the way the words are ordered to form sentences.
it and identifying the patterns. For example, if a company wanted to improve the customer experience, they could look for the patterns in customer behavior. How often do they complain? What are they complaining about? Why did they purchase in the first place? What drives their decision to repurchase? The data collected can help identify patterns. Looking at these patterns can then inform future decisions on how to improve the customer experience, which in turn feeds new patterns. Pattern recognition explains why experienced people are better at making decisions than inexperienced people. It’s not just a matter of education and natural talent. A person experienced in a certain area has created more patterns as they’ve made decisions and assessed the results. That’s why a more experienced person has a greater likelihood of making the right decision.
While pattern matching is innate to individuals, in business it requires a more deliberate effort. It’s not something that most companies do naturally. Business patterns must be discovered. Those that proactively seek out data to help them identify patterns have realized great success in developing products, brands, technologies, services and much more. Companies who come up with the “next big thing” are masters at pattern recognition. They look at existing patterns and develop new patterns in response to them. Take Uber for example. They identified a pattern of negative experiences in the taxi industry — difficulty hailing a cab, inconsistent experiences, dirty cars, unfriendly drivers. Uber took that data and disrupted the industry by creating a new pattern that flipped every negative in the taxi industry. They united the convenience of technology with transportation. Today, Uber is in 632 cities around the world. Pattern matching can also be used to solve a business challenge. It involves breaking a challenge down by analyzing the data behind
Creativity is also a result of pattern recognition. Steve Jobs once said, “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something.” He viewed creativity as a person’s ability to connect experiences they’ve had or observed, and synthesize new patterns. It’s about identifying patterns that are often quite different and combining them to create a new pattern. Mark Twain supported Jobs’ concept of creativity when he said, “all ideas are second-hand.” Innovation often comes from using existing ideas, combining them in different ways or modifying them to make new ones. As intuitive as technology is today, no machine has yet to compete with the human brain’s ability to match patterns. Like any muscle that grows stronger with use, the more businesses use pattern matching, the easier it is to detect new patterns that can inform ideas and decisions. Patterns are out there waiting to be discovered. What will they tell your business? ISSUE 2 . 2019

12 KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE RICH AND THE POOR BY KEN MCELROY
I
’ve been doing videos recently on the difference between the rich and the poor mindset and how that leads to success. The videos are free, so check them out if you like at Kenmcelroy.com. In doing my research on these topics, I find that people often fall into their own belief systems which are largely based on their individual past experiences. These beliefs are typically supported by the people they hang out with. Birds of a feather really do flock together. People live their own illusion which is fabricated from themselves.
54
What I have found generally is that the rich attribute success to abilities, hard work and spirit. The middle class believe it’s education and luck. The poor attribute success to initial capital, connections and sometimes even cheating. Not everyone fits perfectly into these categories, but generally these ring true with most people. I truly believe that some people see the world as abundant and others see it as scarce. Some people are producers and others are consumers and some are both. Which one are you? I was doing a talk last week with a friend and fellow Rich Dad advisor, Tom Wheelwright, who is a leading tax strategist. I found it interesting when he told me that most large taxes people pay are called “consumption” taxes. In other words, people who mostly consume pay the highest taxes. According to him, the tax code rewards producers and if you produce you get tax breaks. For example, there are numerous tax incentives for building and owning housing. This has certainly been true for my partner and me. We buy and build multifamily housing and employ almost 300 people, and for that we get huge tax breaks. It seems that being creative and providing jobs does have its financial advantages. Tom says, “If you want to know what the government wants, just look at what they offer in the form of an incentive.” JETSETMAG.COM
“A rich mindset is willing to invest resources with seemingly no reward right away. Not everything has a clear path to profitability. It’s about risk vs. reward.” - Ken McElroy
I’ve come to realize that just being a consumer is a significant liability and is expensive. Additionally, a consumer’s income is generally lower, typically in the form of a single paycheck, and their taxes are higher. The world rewards the producer. Producers generally are in the highest income and tax brackets and get the highest tax breaks and incentives. I strongly believe that the difference between the rich or the producer and the poor or the consumer is generally just their mindset. I also believe that your mindset can be altered and changed. I am living proof, and so are most of my friends. I found there are 12 basic philosophy differences in the mindsets between the rich producer and the poor consumer. They are listed below and in no particular order.
ISSUE 2 . 2019
55
Altitude // Estates #1 - Surplus of Resources A rich mindset understands that the first goal is to gain a surplus of resources, then to use that surplus to accelerate things. Accelerate education. Accelerate a business. Accelerate the next generation. The poor mindset immediately sees a surplus as an opportunity for consumption and their individual inflated lifestyle. Ego plays a huge part here.
#2 - Momentum A rich mindset seeks to spend its time, resources and energy on work that continues to pay off long after the effort has been invested. The rich mindset is all about getting a flywheel spinning. Building momentum. Creating systems that continue to generate value on their own. The poor mindset is all about the short-term returns. Hoursfor-dollars. Resources invested without an immediate return are resources wasted. As my good friend Robert Kiyosaki says, “Money is a claim on your time.” The poor don’t see this. #3 – Long-term Thinking A rich mindset is willing to invest resources with seemingly no reward right away. Not everything has a clear path to profitability. You have to take a chance and try. It’s about risk vs. reward. The poor mindset’s immediate thought is, “What’s in it for me?” Why pay money to fly to that conference, pay for the hotel and spend all the time when they’re not even paying you? The poor mindset sees no benefit to what they might learn or personal growth. #4 - Relationships A rich mindset seeks to build relationships based on trust, liking, shared values and mutual respect. People with a rich mindset help others and cultivate relationships with no expectation of anything in return. Relationships are viewed as long term. The poor mindset thinks, “I scratch your back, you scratch mine.” Relationships are viewed as short term.
56
JETSETMAG.COM
#5 - Reputation A rich mindset understands that its reputation is everything, that trust and respect are earned slowly, through hard-fought, bloody effort and that both can be lost in an instant. What they say and what they do are aligned and are very important. The poor mindset believes it can get away with compromising its reputation to make a quick buck. The poor see relationships and people as short term. They don’t realize that healthy people see them as toxic.
ISSUE 2 . 2019
57
Altitude // Estates
#6 - It’s not Personal A rich mindset knows that the world isn’t fair, and deals with reality swiftly, humbly and practically. It knows the world owes it nothing, that the universe is indifferent to its existence, that the default for life is suffering and death. All successes are improbable and should be appreciated as such. The poor mindset is consumed by the unfairness of the world and wastes time complaining about it. It feels the world owes it something and waits for it to be handed out.
#7 - Empowering Others A rich mindset celebrates the successes of others. It embraces the competition and often befriends it. You have two choices, tear down another person’s success or be inspired by the example. The rich build up, mentor and coach other people. The poor mindset feels jealousy and bitterness about the successes of others. It looks at everything as a zero-sum game. The poor see a ruthless competition and every person for themselves. #8 - Always Learning A rich mindset understands that it can never know everything and that something can be learned from everyone. A rich mindset is always reading and looking at what can be improved. The rich are open minded. The poor mindset deludes itself into believing it knows everything, and that opposing perspectives are wrong before even hearing them. The poor are know-it-alls. The poor are close-minded.
58
#9 - It Takes a Team A rich mindset understands that it cannot do everything, and that even if it could, it would create greater value by focusing on its core strengths. It knows that the right team is greater than the sum of its parts. Teamwork is the key to wealth. The late Jim Rohn says, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” The poor mindset deludes itself into thinking that it can do everything if it just works hard enough. The poor mindset doesn’t trust others. JETSETMAG.COM
#11 - Resiliency A rich mindset is resilient and sticks it out when the going gets tough, provided that the pursuit is worthwhile. It understands that the rewards are reaped by those who push through the difficulties of a pursuit precisely because the will to push through is scarce. The rich see failure as a strength and failure as an overall part of learning. The poor mindset sometimes sticks things out due to stubbornness and does not see the bigger picture. The poor sees failure as a weakness. #12 - A Lifelong Journey A rich mindset understands that there is no “I made it.” No “done.” Life is defined by challenges and continual learning. The poor mindset believes that one day they’ll be able to “retire,” to kick back and do nothing. That all work is simply “paying dues” on the way to a life of leisure. So much of life is our own preprogramming. If you can take an honest approach to where you are currently without bias, you can then begin the process of fine-tuning your mindset. As the late great Wayne Dyer said, “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.”

WILL EDUCATION PREPARE OUR YOUTH FOR A BRAVE NEW WORLD? By robert kiyosaki

hen I was a kid in the ‘60s, there was not much difference between the rich and everyone else. The rich lived in better homes and drove newer cars. My rich classmates had better bicycles. Their parents belonged to the country club and the yacht club. That was about it. The gap between the rich and the rest of us was not much of a gap. Back then, the gap could be narrowed... simply by getting a good education and a high-paying job. It’s a different story today. Today, the rich have their own private jets and the uber rich have their own rocket ships. Soon, the really rich will be flying to outer space . . . while the poor, middle class and the merely rich travel to Disneyland for rocket ship rides. I love traveling by private jet and writing for Jetset. Flying by private jet is one of the great rewards for years of blood, sweat and tears. I have not made reservations for a trip by rocket ship... yet. This article is not about discount airlines, private jets and rocket ships. My primary reason for writing this article is my concern for the widening gap between the rich and everyone else. An ever-widening gap is dangerous, for all of us. Throughout history, widening gaps lead to social unrest, violence, crime, and, in extreme cases, revolution. At the core of this problem is an obsolete educational system. Today, a good education can no longer close the gap between those who ride the bus and those who will ride rockets. In fact, a good
“Today, a good education can no longer close the gap between those who ride the bus and those who will ride rockets.” - Robert Kiyosaki education often leaves students strapped with school-loan debt and slim prospects for high-paying jobs.
The Rise of Socialism Income inequality gives rise to socialism. In the 2019 State of the Union address, President Donald Trump declared, “America will never become a socialist country.” Some in Congress applauded; many did not. Simply put, socialists believe in Robin Hood economics: Take from the rich and give to the poor. The Federalist.com reports that 51 percent of Americans under 30 hold a positive viewpoint on socialism. Years ago, Winston Churchill said: “If you are under 30 and not a socialist... it means you do not have a heart. And if you are over 30 and are not a capitalist... it means you do not have a brain.”

Altitude // Finance Bernie Sanders is over 30. What does that mean? So are Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a socialist, is 28 years old and the youngest woman ever elected to the U.S. Congress. She has a FICO score of 430. A perfect FICO score is 850. Although her FICO score would not qualify her for a home loan, she serves on the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee. AOC, as she is known, prides herself for paying her staffers a minimum of $52,000 of taxpayer money a year, yet she earned less than $26,000 as a bartender a year ago. Today, a year later, she makes $174,000 as a Congresswoman. Isn’t America great?
Back to the Future England has been a socialist country a lot longer than the United States. America started to become a socialist country in 1933 with the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt who instituted America’s most popular legislation: Social Security. That program is going broke today and, according to MarketWatch, Social Security has an underfunded liability of $13.2 trillion. Coincidently, 1933 was the same year Adolf Hitler rose to power. Before Americans vote for increased socialism, free education, free healthcare and subsidized housing, they may want to look back to the future, at merry old England today.
“When socialists cry, “Tax the rich!” the people who are really taxed are the middle and highincome working classes.” Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of England, once said: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”
62
The cry of all socialists is “tax the rich.” That sounds great in theory, but anyone who is really rich can afford to hire the best tax attorneys and tax accountants. Hence, the really rich pay little to nothing in taxes. It’s been said that “the really rich do not pay taxes.” And, in that vein, “neither do the really poor.” When socialists cry, “Tax the rich!” the people who are really taxed are the middle and high-income working classes. Today, the way to win elections is to jump on the tax-the-rich political bandwagon. AOC proposes a 70 percent tax on the rich. Senator Elizabeth Warren proposes a 90 percent tax on the rich. Bernie Sanders seems like a wimp next to those two political competitors. The problem is that when the middle class votes to tax the rich, the middle class are the ones who actually pay the taxes — the really rich and really poor do not. JETSETMAG.COM

The February 25, 2019 edition of The New York Times ran an article titled, Growing Up Lean and Giving Up on Capitalism. The article is about a 19-year-old man, Alex McIntyre, growing up in England. The article starts with: “Alex McIntyre was raised on budget cuts.” The youth center where he went to school was shuttered when he was 10. When he was 11, his mother’s housing benefit was shaved away, a casualty of the Welfare Reform Act. “Austerity, that’s what I know, that’s my life,” McIntyre said. “I’ve never known an England that was a different way.”
The article continues: Mr. McIntyre is the first in his family to attend college, part of a vast cohort of young Britons that was meant to embody upward social

“Rich or poor, educated or uneducated, employed or unemployed, we all use money. Why is there little to no financial education in schools? This lack of education on a vital life skill is, in my mind, criminal.” - Robert Kiyosaki mobility. It is a paradox that so many in this bulge, like their counter parts in the United States, are giving up on capitalism, convinced it cannot provide their families with a decent life. His grievance is generational: that the state has taken away benefits his parents and grandparents enjoyed, like low-cost housing and free education. Britons who came of age in the wake of the financial crisis of 2008 will, in many cases, be worse off than their parents. Born on the wrong side of skyrocketing property values, 30-year-olds, in many cases, are only half as likely to own homes as baby-boomers were at the same age. A third are expected to rent for their whole lives. Unlike previous generations, they are expected to foot the bill for an expensive education. The average graduate now owes the government more than 50,800 pounds, or $64,000, a debt to be paid back gradually after securing a well-paying job. The portion of Britons attending college has climbed to 49 percent, the highest level ever, but they will graduate into a historic spell of wage stagnation. Alex McIntyre was accepted into a special program for gifted young poor people, and accepted to Cambridge University, where he ate in a wood-paneled dining hall, served by waiters, an experience he called “hilarious.” Today he works as a kitchen assistant, a fry chef at a J.D. Witherspoons, a budget restaurant chain much like America’s Applebee’s, working the midnight to 8 a.m. shift.
As I’ve said, this article is not about private jets and rocket ship rides. And it is not about socialism, communism or capitalism. This article is about education. Education is more important than ever before. As stated earlier, when I was a kid in the 1960s, a good education and a good job could close the gap in income equality. Today, a good education is not enough. Today a “good education” is leaving millions of young people, all over the world, crushed under an avalanche of trillions of dollars in student loan debt... while most graduates are unprepared for the real world. Rich or poor, educated or uneducated, employed or unemployed, we all use money. Why is there little to no financial education in schools? It’s a question I’ve asked, again and again, for decades. This lack of education on a vital life skill is, in my mind, criminal. If our education system fails to prepare our youth for a rapidly approaching brave new world, social unrest will likely lead to revolution. And maybe, the next revolution is just what we will all need a rocket ship for.
Alex McIntyre has joined his local labor union, manned picket lines, joined protest marches and is attending group studies on Karl Marx. If Alex McIntyre lived in America, he might be campaigning for AOC. They are about the same age. The next day, The New York Times ran an article about China’s Premier Xi’s warning of escalating social unrest as unemployment rates rise across China.
Best known as the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad — the #1 personal finance book of all time — Robert Kiyosaki has challenged and changed the way tens of millions of people around the world think about money. Honest Advice for Entrepreneurs By Daymond John
I
launched FUBU in my early twenties. As many of you know, I started out sewing hats in the living room of my mom’s house with the money I made working at Red Lobster and selling them on the street corner. I managed to turn that into a $4 billion clothing empire. I am not bragging when I tell this very familiar story; I just want to remind you that anything is possible and take the time to carefully illustrate some of the steps that got me from Point A to B. It wasn’t blind luck, and it certainly didn’t happen overnight. For those of you who have launched successful brands of your own (of any scope and in any industry), then you know the tremendous amount of blood, sweat, and tears that go into building a brand. You have to live and breathe it. You have to represent it at every turn and constantly be thinking about how you can further it. It’s a painstaking process, but when it does finally take off, you feel immense pride and ownership in seeing your baby grow and evolve into something beyond you, something bigger with a life of its own.

“For those trying to launch a new brand, I cannot stress the importance of finding knowledgeable people in your field and doing the proper market research.” Invest in Financial Intelligence In my last Jetset article, I wrote about the importance of educating our new workforce for the jobs of tomorrow. I talked about the antiquated, inept nature of our education system and lamented the fact that people today are not taught basic financial intelligence. Kids come out of college with insane credit card debt. They are brought up in the culture of “you need money to make money.” But whether you are operating a billion dollar business or launching a clothing line or simply managing your portfolio, you need to have sound financial intelligence.
As a Jetset reader, odds are you have already scaled to great heights in your field. Every true entrepreneur has tales of success and failure, lessons learned and crises overcame. And when Jetset told me they were running their first ever Entrepreneur Issue — aimed at honoring and educating entrepreneurs both young and old — they asked me what I wanted to write about, what wisdom I had to share on the subject. My first thought was to offer five rules for those launching a brand for the first or fifteenth time. So whether you are young and hungry like I was, or far more seasoned and simply looking to break into a new field, here are a few things I wish I would have known back when I was that kid in Queens with dreams of a brand of my own. 68

This extends beyond going to business school and getting an MBA. Now despite the fact that I never went to college, I will never disparage higher education. But I will say that your education doesn’t stop when you grab that diploma. If you are a real entrepreneur, then your business education is a life-long work-in-progress. It never ceases. For those trying to launch a new brand (or any business venture), I cannot stress the importance of finding knowledgeable people in your field and doing the proper market research. Conduct cost analysis, interview people, study similar companies and market trends. The better your financial education, the better your brand. Period. And be smart with your money. Never let that financial education go to waste. Take Affordable Steps Don’t go out and try to build Rome in a day. If you have ten pieces of product that you can’t sell, then raising $10,000,000 to have a million pieces of crap just puts you in a far deeper hole. You may think you are doing great but you are really just leveraging your brand to death. One of the top reasons a lot of new entrepreneurs fail is not because they lack funding — just look at Silicon Valley, where thousands of VCs out there are just dying to inject nascent businesses with cash — it’s actually the opposite. Many businesses fail because they are overfunded.
“No matter where you are at, take affordable steps. Don’t overextend yourself or ever allow yourself to be dug into a hole.” If someone was starting a company and they went out and borrowed ten times what they are worth and mortgaged their house to fund it, I would tell them they are being extremely foolish. Same for the man with $100 million in assets who seeks a billion dollars in funding to launch a brand. No matter where you are at, take affordable steps. Don’t overextend yourself or ever allow yourself to be dug into a hole. For six years while I was launching FUBU I was still taking shifts at Red Lobster. Why? Because it gave me medical benefits, kept the lights on, and kept me fed (perhaps too well). Now I was only making about $35,000 a year, but over the course of six years, that added up to over $200,000. That’s over $200,000 that I didn’t have to borrow, $200,000 of debt that I didn’t have hamstringing my fledgling business. Never lose that mentality. Rethink OPM Everyone in business is familiar with the concept of OPM, or “Other People’s Money.” Countless billionaires built their entire careers off of OPM. (Heck, our new president has often bragged about his OPM prowess.) But one of my mother’s greatest contributions
to my financial education, was getting me to think about the “M” in OPM as something beyond money. Other People’s Manufacturing. Other People’s Mentoring. Other People’s Manpower. Other People’s Mindpower…the list goes on. Regardless of how much capital you have, you need to constantly be leveraging. You need to constantly be thinking of ways to utilize other people’s assets. When I got my first $50,000 order, I was ecstatic….until I realized I didn’t have the money to actually fulfill it. Determined to find a solution, I went to the printer who used to charge me $6.25 a pop to screen print a shirt. I told him to instead charge me $7.50 per shirt, ship the shirts directly to the retailer, and in turn the retailer would pay them. Why did it work? Because it was Other People’s Manufacturing. It was a win-win-win scenario. The retailer got to do business with someone they knew had an established business and could trust (not some kid in a busted Nissan), the printer got a new retail contact they could possibly exploit later (and an extra $1.25 a shirt), and I got paid without lifting a finger or (most importantly) giving up a single point of precious equity. Always be thinking about how you can utilize other people’s assets to benefit all parties. ISSUE 2 . 2019

“You must create trust with the people who buy your products and make them invest in you and your business.” Find a Way to Catch Fire When I was trying to make FUBU grow, I knew I needed the proper spokespeople to help it reach the next step. The biggest rapper on the planet at the time was LL Cool J, who had just signed a multimillion-dollar deal with The Gap. Lucky for me LL was from Queens and still lived there. We knew where he lived, so my crew and I camped out at LL’s house for hours, determined to talk to him. When he finally came outside, we showed him the clothes. LL was a businessman, he had financial education, so he was reluctant to wear a product for free when he was getting millions to wear another. But I convinced him that wearing FUBU would prove he still represented where he came from, still hadn’t forgot his roots. He reluctantly took some clothes. A little while later, The Gap aired a commercial featuring LL rapping while wearing nothing but Gap clothes...that is nothing except the FUBU hat they inexplicably let him wear (and mention by name when he spelled out the brand’s acronym in his rap). After that, our orders went through the roof. The next year, we cleared $300 million in sales. In one master stroke, my brand had caught fire. My advice? Find your LL. Find that one person or demographic or venue that is going to

best help drive your brand into the stratosphere (and at minimal cost). If you are launching a clothing company, you could borrow or spend a ton of capital on a massive marketing budget...or you could just mail one article of clothing to 100 demographically relevant celebrities with a hand-written note. If just one of them wears it on their Instagram, you just did more for your brand than a million dollar marketing campaign ever could. Know Your Brand...And Protect it at All Costs Your customers are part of your company’s ecosystem. You must create trust with the people who buy your products and make them invest in you and your business. Their belief in what you do will result in returns beyond imagination. But never lose sight of who your audience is, what they want, and above all else, what your brand is. I knew FUBU to its core. I knew that LL was the perfect person to help it grow. If I could have gotten a hat on Steven Tyler, I would have probably said no, because despite his legendary fame, he was not my brand. Never lose sight of your brand. Never lose sight of your core audience. Follow these steps and some day you might be telling tales of your brand in the pages of your favorite magazine.

A MORE BALANCED PERSPECTIVE CAN BE LIBERATING BY DR. JOHN DEMARTINI
A
re you truly objectively directing your life as an individual master? Or are you simply subjectively reacting to others and then justifying and rationalizing such reactions subconsciously as a social slave? In all probability, you have experienced moments in your life when you have had your perceptions of other individuals preoccupy space and time in your mind and emotionally distract you from being fully present. When this happens, you became temporarily run by your subjectively-biased perceptions of others around you. Many of your everyday emotional reactions can actually emerge from these subconsciously-stored encounters that you may have misperceived subjectively to be solely or predominantly pleasurable or painful instead of more objectively neutral, which such encounters eventually reveal themselves to be. An encounter that may initially be consciously perceived to be solely terrific or terrible can over a day, a week, a month, a year or five years reveal its other, initially unconscious, side. But why wait to gain the wisdom of the ages through the aging process when you can have the wisdom of the ages without it? Why not look for both sides synchronously and liberate enormous amounts of so-called subconscious, disempowered suffering? Whenever you subjectively distort your perceptions of others and become infatuated, attracted, enamored or obsessed and see them only or predominantly one-sided, they can begin to preoccupy and dominate your mind and subconsciously run your life. Conversely, whenever you subjectively distort your perceptions of others and become resentful, repelled, disgusted or angry and again see them only or predominantly one-sided, they can also begin to preoccupy and dominate your mind and subconsciously run your life. Anytime you unwisely put others up on pedestals or down in pits and become infatuated with or resent them, they can distract your mind, generate electronic brain noise and activate your amygdala’s desire centers. This can impulsively make you seek these individuals or can instinctively make you avoid them before you are even fully conscious of your behavior. Only when you have a perfectly and
synchronously balanced perception of others and see them objectively as whole and equilibrated are you set free from such biased judgments and subconscious emotional reactions that can so easily and insidiously run your life. If I approached you, introduced myself and then suddenly and heroically praised you with a serial biased statement such as: You are always positive, never negative; always kind, never cruel; always nice and never mean; always giving, never taking; always generous, never stingy; always considerate, never inconsiderate and always peaceful, never wrathful, you would immediately have your intuitive bullshit meter go off inside your brain/mind. You would think of the times when you acted out the exact opposite roles of what I just unwisely assumed and carefully projected. You would not have certainty about the heroic image that I unthoughtfully projected onto you. Certainty within will not spontaneously emerge with such a one-sided, subjectively-biased view. And, if I approached you, introduced myself and then suddenly and villainously reprimanded you with a serial biased statement such as: You are always negative, never positive; always cruel, never kind; always mean and never nice; always taking, never giving; always stingy, never generous; always inconsiderate, never considerate, and always wrathful, never peaceful, you would also immediately have your intuitive bullshit meter go off inside your brain/mind. You would think of the times when you acted out the opposite roles of what I just unwisely assumed and carelessly projected. You would not have certainty about the villainous image that I unthoughtfully projected onto you. Again, certainty within will not spontaneously emerge with such a one-sided, subjectively-biased view. But, if I approached you, introduced myself and then suddenly and more respectfully described you with a serial statement such as: You are sometimes positive and sometimes negative, sometimes kind and sometimes cruel, sometimes nice and sometimes mean, sometimes giving and sometimes taking, sometimes generous and sometimes stingy, sometimes considerate and sometimes inconsiderate, and sometimes peaceful and sometimes wrathful, you ISSUE 21 . 2019

Altitude // Inspire would immediately have your equilibrating intuition inside your mind think of the specific times when you acted out both complementary opposite roles of what I just more wisely and caringly projected. You would now have certainty about the more balanced and objective image that I thoughtfully projected onto you. Certainty spontaneously emerges in such a balanced view and mind. Absolutes in perceptions are infinitely improbable, subjectivelybiased and unrealistic projections you can sometimes unwisely impose onto other individuals. More balanced objective perceptions are more probable and realistic and can liberate you from the noise that emerges in your brain/mind from such unwise absolutes. When you are more balanced and objective with your perceptions, you bring blood, glucose and oxygen to your forebrain’s executive center and awaken greater self-governance and more fully super-conscious or transcendent actions. When you are imbalanced or subjective with your perceptions, you bring blood glucose and oxygen to your amygdala and hindbrain impulse and instinct centers and bring about subconsciously-originating emotional reactions. The former empowers you and allows you to run you. The latter disempowers you and allows you to be run from the world or others about. Ultimately, through time or inward presence you wisely learn that no other individual is worth putting up on a pedestal or down into a pit; no one is worth infatuating with or resenting, but everyone is worth putting in your heart. You may momentarily be too humble, or too proud, to admit what you see in others is actually already inside you. It may simply be in a form that has so far eluded you, but nothing is actually missing within the vast and whole you. You are both the hero and the villain, the saint and the sinner, the virtuous and the vicious, and so are all those around you in different place and times. You do not have to hopefully acquire or get rid of any part of yourself to fully love yourself. You deserve to be loved as you are and as the whole. Since the world of others around you is a reflection of the world within you, by asking intuitive questions that allow you to see both sides synchronously, you can center yourself and masterfully run your own life. You are here to be an objective master of your destiny, not a subjective victim of your history. So take command of yourself by balancing your view and opening your heart to your own and other’s full magnificence. SAMUEL L. JACKSON SHOWS NO SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN BY SI SI PENALOZA

ational treasure Samuel Leroy Jackson is everywhere these days. From Marvel movie trailers to Capital One adverts, not to mention the vast litany of performances on repeat on the cable cycle. At a seasoned 70, Jackson is an A-Lister in demand, showing no signs of slowing down. His two recent releases, Glass and Captain Marvel, have already grossed more than a billion dollars. All in a day’s work for the consummate pro who blasted his way into our collective consciousness as a bounty hunter, junkie, Jedi master, and perhaps most memorably as a freestyle evangelical hitman in the 1994 cult classic Pulp Fiction.

Jackson is not so much a scene stealer as he is a franchise stealer. Given enough wiggle room, he’ll walk away with another actor’s starmaking vehicle. Clint Eastwood and Tom Cruise came in second and third, respectively, behind Jackson in a study published in Applied Network Science that used an algorithm to measure various stars’ impact on pop culture. According to this one metric, Jackson is “the most influential actor of all time,” Indeed, his 120-plus film credits — from profitgenerating juggernauts like Jurassic Park and the Star Wars prequels to art house hits like Pulp Fiction — have earned a grand total of $7.4 billion at the U.S. box office, and a staggering $13.3 billion worldwide. He is officially the highest-grossing actor of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. On top of this accolade, every year the cult favorite gains millions of new fans across the globe, as teenagers come of age and see Pulp Fiction for the first time. A professional living legend at this point, Jackson challenges our notion of what style in your 70s can look like. Jackson is the kind of pop culture icon that inspires George Lucas to make a toast at his 70th birthday bash at Cipriani in Manhattan, the same intimate gathering where Stevie Wonder sang “Happy Birthday” to a humbled celebrant. While working the red carpet to promote his turn in M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, he showed off considerable swagger in structured velvet suits and chic cashmere caps. He rocks a purple suit like a boss, elevates any beanie with aplomb, and his high concept eyewear is always on point. His affection for translucent Alain Mikli frames and Kangol caps has led to some of his best looks. Coming of age in the segregated South, Jackson flourished in an atmosphere of radical politics. While a student at the historically black Morehouse College in Atlanta, he served as an usher at Martin Luther King Jr.’s funeral in 1968. He became increasingly involved in the black-power movement; in 1969, he joined a group that protested the absence of blacks on the board of trustees by notoriously locking JETSETMAG.COM
several board members in a building for two days. He was promptly expelled. Later that year, Jackson watched a performance by the Negro Ensemble Company and was ignited by the transformative power of performance. After working as a social worker for two years in Los Angeles, Jackson returned to Morehouse to pursue theatre acting and graduated in 1972. A thespian at his core, Jackson spent 15 years on the New York stage and didn’t become a movie star until his mid-40s. The secret to his success is like Dwyane Wade’s jump shot: he’s perennially on time, masters his delivery, nails his mark with brio. His work ethic inspires castmates to rise to his cruising altitude. That commitment manifests in his personal life, too. He’s been with his wife LaTanya Richardson, also a distinguished actor, for nearly 40 years. How did the Oscar-nominated actor come by his “coolest man on the planet” reputation? Rather earnestly, as it happens. He has often inspired filmmakers to cross the color line; his roles in White Sands, Twisted, and The Red Violin, for example, were originally written as white characters and adapted for Jackson specifically. He’s also known in industry circles for being an actor who can elevate bog standard material, adding a spicy kick to lackluster scripts. In his downtime, Jackson’s been known to hit the links with the likes of Bill Clinton, Michael Jordan, and Charles Barkley. He is simply obsessed with golf; the hard-working actor is so committed to the game that he often has a golf clause worked into his project agreements. His most memorable round came with the opportunity to play alongside Tiger Woods at the Dunhill Cup in St. Andrews. His most beloved course in America? Augusta National, where he played three times after filming Freedomland. Talk about a legendary wrap gift, courtesy of the film’s producers. Active on the celebrity golf circuit, Jackson even hosts his own charity golf event to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association.

He’ll low-key drop in to local dive bars and can’t resist the allure of public golf courses. He’s been known to spark up a convivial game with complete strangers. On one day off while shooting in Memphis, he joined a dozen black off-duty cops about to hit the links. He’s certainly not the type to fortress himself from the public with bodyguards. Taking the train, walking the streets and stopping for pizza like any other citizen keeps him grounded. Originating the Nick Fury role with panache in 2008’s Iron Man, Jackson reprised it two years later in Iron Man 2 and would play the part seven more times in 10 years. As Comicon legend has it, Jackson was “cast” as Fury without his knowledge back in 2002 when comic book writer Mark Millar was working on a Marvel comic called The Ultimates and modeled the character after his favorite movie star. Millar thought of Jackson as the world’s coolest guy but had no idea his idol was a besotted Marvel junkie. (Jackson is such a die-hard comic

aficionado that he routinely has new releases set aside for him at his favorite Los Angeles comic shop). Spotting his likeness in the Avengers comic panels, Jackson was taken aback and called his agents, who called Marvel — not yet owned by Disney — which sheepishly apologized and pledged to put him in the movie adaptations. That’s the way the story goes on how Jackson ended up landing the anchor role that ties together the most profitable superhero franchise in box office history. This year’s Captain Marvel release marked the end of Jackson’s nine-picture deal with Marvel. The film, set in 1995, cleverly incorporated makeup and CGI to deliver a younger Fury modeled on Jackson’s face from 1998’s The Negotiator. The good news? Jackson has no plans of retiring the character. He’s already wrapped Spider-Man: Far From Home (opening this July 5) and has reportedly said he would happily play the part into his 80s, joking to reporters, “I could be the Alec Guinness of Marvel movies.” We certainly like the sound of that. Here’s to many more years of movie magic featuring the legendary longevity of Samuel L. Jackson.

Semi-Private Flying Experiences Now Available to More Destinations By Jamie Wilson

he idea of traveling in a private jet appeals to almost everyone — how could it not? Imagine being able to just let the flight crew know you and the family will be heading to the airport in a few hours to depart for Mammoth Lakes for a ski vacation and to “please have the jet ready.” Or, perhaps you ask the flight crew to prepare the aircraft so you and your friends can travel to Coachella, one of the biggest music and arts festivals in the U.S. Unfortunately, a scenario like this is not reality for most, though — or is it? In the past, in both examples, the answer was that an experience similar to private jet travel was not a reality for everyone. But now, with departures from ACI Jet at John Wayne Orange County Airport (JWA), this experience is met with a resounding “Yes, it is a reality!” Since its inception at JWA in the summer of 2018, JetSuiteX has expanded from serving Las Vegas to now having daily flights to both Las Vegas and Oakland as well as seasonally to Mammoth Lakes and the Coachella Valley in Thermal. JetSuiteX is a “public charter” service that provides customers with the ease and convenience of traveling on a charter flight at the cost of flying a commercial airline. “We have received a warm reception in Orange County,” says JetSuiteX CEO Alex Wilcox. “The JetSuiteX experience is unlike any other in aviation today and both business and leisure travelers in Orange County have been flocking to this new way to fly between short distances. We look forward to what the future holds for this great destination.”
As the spacious interiors of their Embraer EMB-135 aircraft offer only 30 comfortable leather seats with business class legroom (compared to the 50 seats on the same type of jet for a regional airline), JetSuiteX makes the journey as memorable and satisfying as the destination itself. ACI Jet is the perfect pairing in this memorable journey. The travel experience is enhanced as soon as passengers arrive at ACI Jet for their flight where valets greet them upon arrival, quickly park their car and assist with baggage. Once inside the dedicated JetSuiteX lounge at ACI Jet’s private aviation terminal, passengers efficiently proceed through the check-in process and comfortably relax in the spacious and well-appointed lobby filled with complimentary snacks and beverages. No need to arrive hours before a flight either — many arrive just 15 minutes before departure. With the JetSuiteX “semi-private flying” experience, passengers can live much of the private jet lifestyle through all the convenience, comfort and time-saving it offers. Imagine going from living room to Coachella, the ski slopes, a Vegas show or the Bay Area in about two hours while actually enjoying the travel experience. About ACI Jet Founded in 1998 by the company’s chief executive and avid aviator, William Borgsmiller, and headquartered in California, ACI Jet is a recognized leader in private aviation services. The company enables aircraft owners and operators the freedom to focus on their businesses rather than their travel accommodations. Organically grown, from a single aircraft operation to a multi-base fleet operator, and privately owned since its founding, ACI Jet is the premier provider of aircraft ground support services and fuel, maintenance and inspections, full-service aircraft management and private jet charter services on the West Coast. SoCal’s New Luxury Private Hangar and Office Space By karen brost

ne of the earliest lessons we learn as children is to share with others,” says Ronald Rasak, visionary commercial real estate developer. “Sharing, kindness and generosity are fundamental lessons with lifelong value. By the same token, early childhood is a fairly low-risk environment in which to share — we’re talking about sharing construction paper and glue. On the other hand, if you own a multimillion-dollar private aircraft, the notion of sharing a space for that aircraft is rather unusual, especially when one considers the value of the asset. In my opinion, you deserve a lot more than just a spot in a shared hangar at an FBO.” It’s for this reason that Rasak developed CloudNine at Camarillo — a luxury private aircraft hangar model he plans to bring to select markets nationwide. Rasak’s view on shared hangar space is both perceptive and logical. If a person can easily afford to buy their own home, why would they choose to rent an apartment with multiple roommates? In the development of CloudNine, Rasak began with a parallel thesis. If a person can afford to own and operate a private jet, why on earth would that person choose to keep it in a shared space? “It’s not that we’re anti-FBO,” he adds. “Our theory is that owners of larger jet aircraft — if given the option — value higher levels of privacy, security and luxury than are found in community hangar storage options at most FBOs today.” After examining the market for large aircraft storage options, Rasak chose Camarillo, California for the first of several planned CloudNine developments nationwide — securing a brand-new, fiftyyear lease with Ventura County. The seven-acre campus includes its own private entrance through which aircraft owners and their guests and employees can enter the airport. Featuring ample runway space to accommodate even the largest of business jets, Camarillo Airport (CMA) is only a short drive away from the area’s most frequented — and congested — airports. “In the northern part of the LA basin, there’s not much choice when it comes to private hangar options,” Rasak continues. “Camarillo Airport is less than forty miles away from Van Nuys, Santa Barbara, Burbank and the Santa Monica Airport — which, incidentally, business jet operators recently lost the effective use of.” JETSETMAG.COM
For those interested in securing space in CloudNine at Camarillo, now is the perfect time to strike: customization of both hangar and office design are currently available for owners. While the planned development includes four 25,000 square foot hangars with some 5,000 plus square feet of office space each, Rasak notes, “We’re in the design phase — so if an aircraft owner desires, say, 30,000 square feet of hangar deck space instead of 25,000, there’s still a window of time before we finalize the layout.” But that window will be closing soon. “We’re already in talks on one of the four hangars.” The message for prospective private hangar owners is clear — move quickly. The market is embracing the CloudNine model with open arms. “Sure, not everyone wants a private, gated entrance to their hangar, a security system designed and maintained by the best in the world, or the lowest fuel prices and property taxes in the region,” jokes Rasak. “But we firmly believe that discerning private aircraft owners deserve more — and CloudNine will deliver features and amenities not found at any other private hangar complex in the country today.”
About CloudNine CloudNine is a luxury, private hangar complex for the discerning aircraft owner, available at select markets throughout the country. Created by visionary commercial real estate developer Ronald Rasak of RKR, Inc., the first CloudNine space breaks ground in Camarillo, CA in 2019 and will offer some 100,000 square feet of private hangar space. For hangar customization and pre-leasing information, visit RKRinc.com/cloudnine.

Where Fine Art Meets Fine Fashion By Anne-Marie Pritchett
I
t’s the attention to details, that wins the day. A great suit will make a man look sharp and feel confident; but it won’t help him stand out from others in the room. A unique fine art pocket square will set you apart and command attention. Pocket squares made their way into the fashion world in the 1920s and have evolved through the decades. From Cary Grant to Daniel Craig, the most dapper gentlemen have taken a once pragmatic accessory and turned it into a sophisticated (sometimes eccentric) embellishment that can truly show a man’s individual style. “Every accessory in a wardrobe communicates little details about a person. They say, ‘I am different, and you see that.’ This often-overlooked investment elevates your game,” says Tyler Bargas, Founder of Finley & Company. What sets the line of handmade Italian pocket squares apart from other brands is the proprietary artwork that graces each piece. These are not plain, plaid, paisley or polka-a-dot pieces of silk. Finley & Company luxury pocket squares fuse quality Italian craftmanship, fine fabrics and exclusively licensed artwork to produce limited edition designs that inspire stability, confidence and poise. Recently, the company was granted an exclusive license to create a capsule collection of three designs from Versace-famed Ilian Rachov. ‘Ballerina,’ ‘Golden Flowers,’ and ‘ROME’ are beautifully presented on 15” squares made of 100% silk twill. As always, each piece in the set has hand-rolled and stitched edges and is made in Italy. Other stunning collections include Carl Warner’s foodscape photography, legendary

body painting artist Craig Tracy, and Thomas Cole, a 19th century artist whose paintings appear in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There is no wrong way to wear a pocket square, except not to wear one at all. Whether a classic straight fold or a fanciful crown fold, there is excitement in the mystery within a Finley and Co. adorned pocket. Each piece holds vibrant color and intrigue, as only the wearer knows what lies at the centerpiece of the square—until he reveals it to admirers. The best pocket squares share these qualities: hand-rolled, handstitched edges, sleek proportions, exquisite artistry and fine materials that complement the design. Finley & Co. celebrates the individuality of style in each exclusive collection. Finley & Company pocket squares singles and sets are available at select fine men’s stores, custom tailors, private stylists and online at Finleyandco.com. Women’s scarves coming soon.

Why it Should Be Part of Your Capital Preservation Strategy by karen brost
g 88
old is a key part of any wise capital preservation strategy given its ability to shelter assets from volatility. With the stock market riding a roller coaster, global trade facing major challenges and the national debt spiraling out of control, smart investors are quickly moving their assets into precious metals. A recent World Gold Council survey of private wealth management firms for high-net-worth investors revealed a typical gold allocation of more than six percent, higher than other alternative assets such as agriculture and oil. A little-known law even allows U.S. citizens to own physical precious metals inside an individual retirement account. JETSETMAG.COM
Smart money is moving to gold because it’s a: 1. Hedge Against Inflation By definition, as inflation rises, the value of currency falls. Over the long term, almost all currencies have depreciated in value relative to gold. When inflation rises over a sustained period of time, gold becomes a hedge against rising prices. For example, the price of gold doubled between 2002 and 2007 because the dollar’s value fell 40 percent during that same period. While the amount and value of currency in circulation can fluctuate drastically, the total quantity of gold is extremely limited. Unlike paper currency, gold cannot be created, making it more stable and less susceptible to inflation.
2. Safe-Haven Asset During Volatile Times A safe-haven asset, like gold, protects investors against major loss during a catastrophe. Many investors bought gold during the 2008 financial crisis to protect their assets. Gold has been used as both a currency and store of value for thousands of years, and while currencies and securities can experience dramatic changes in value, including total collapse, gold has never lost all value.
When Is Gold Worth More Than its Weight? Most investors buy gold as a means of diversifying their financial portfolio, but did you know there’s also a way to diversify within precious metals? Certified rare coins (like a gold coin from the Old West or a modern-day rarity like a Gold Eagle in perfect condition) are based on supply and demand, like classic cars or fine art, rather than the commodities exchange. These coins can hold their value, or even go up, when the price of gold goes down. Investors may want to explore this market as a way to secure gold, while limiting exposure to the commodity price.
Storage at the Texas Bullion Depository includes: • Audits on all assets by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts • 100 percent all-risk insurance through Lloyd’s of London • Convenient process for deposits, withdrawals and liquidations • Online account showing current holdings by ounce and comparative value in dollars • Photographic evidence of items in your portfolio
Investors interested in using gold as a means of wealth preservation and asset protection will find the combination of the U.S. Gold Bureau’s Large Portfolio Metals Trading program and the backing of secure storage at the Texas Bullion Depository to be a wise solution that can help to provide stability and long-term protection of buying power for generations to come. Act Now to Protect Your Assets To learn more about investing in gold and silver, call the U.S. Gold Bureau’s Account Executive team at (800) 885-GOLD or visit USGoldBureau.com/jetset. Acquisitions of $25,000 or more receive preferential pricing. Ask about complimentary storage offers available at the Texas Bullion Depository.
3. Liquid Direct Investment Many investors buy gold to benefit from anticipated increases in the price of gold. As an asset with dwindling supply and consistent or growing demand, gold is expected by many to increase in price over time, regardless of macro-economic factors.
Secure Storage at the Texas Bullion Depository Many investors are interested in owning gold and silver but are unsure how to store it. Until recently, there were few safe options for individual consumers. Private storage facilities are unregulated and often uninsured. This changed when Texas lawmakers authorized the country’s first state-backed gold depository in 2015. The Texas Bullion Depository (www.texasbulliondepository.gov) provides a secure location for individuals, corporations, estates, trusts, family offices, governmental agencies and even sovereign nations to store and insure their precious metal assets. It is an agency of the State of Texas, administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
