EDITOR’S LETTER
hen I was growing up, one of my favorite memories was when the Sears Christmas catalog would show up in our mailbox. Inside was page after page of toys, with everything a little boy could possibly want displayed on those thin, glossy pages. Back then I would spend hours looking for what I wanted, dog-earing the corners and circling things with a marker until I had a good idea of what were the best things I could possibly have under the tree. Those were good times. Of course, that was before the Internet, and back then, the Sears Christmas catalog was the only way I knew what the latest G.I.Joe toy would be, and what the Transformers had in store for the coming year. And at my age, I was too young to pick up magazines at the store to discover new things; if it wasn’t in the latest comic book, I wouldn’t know about it. Today, I look down at my little boy, who’s not yet 2 years old, and think about how different his world is Ǥ ǯ ϐ through a catalog until the pages get worn and folded over, ǯ ϐ Christmas. I’ll probably get an email from my kid with the title “X-Mas 2016” and everything laid out nice and neat. That’s the way things are today. That doesn’t mean that it has to stay that way, though. Since the beginning, Jetset magazine has done a Holiday Gift Guide around the holiday season, and as we were putting it together this year, I started thinking back to that old catalog. We may not have the latest toys from Hasbro inside, but instead we have all of the fun things that you may want as an adult. Want this year’s hottest gadget? ϐ celebrate the holiday season. No matter what it is, we have some of the best holiday items that any Jetset reader will want all on these pages — and it’s quite the list. Of course, that’s not all that we have in store with this issue. This month we’ve really spanned the globe to bring you some of the hottest spots on the planet, bar none. For ǡ ϐ ǡ ǡ Mediterranean destination that would be excellent to see during these winter months. If that’s not enough, get your ϐ ǯ ǡ ϐ to pick out a solid wine in our Drinks section. No matter what you do this holiday season, make sure to take time out of your busy schedules to hang out with your family and spend some quality time. For me, I’ll be at home with the wife and kid, looking forward to the days when I get his Christmas wish list.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER
T
here really is nothing like the holiday season. Everyone gets together with their families, cuddles up around the ϐ gifts with laughter bouncing around in the background. It really is a great time of year, and one of my favorites. Of course, this also means it’s time to get out and do some shopping, which is easier at some times than it is Ǥ ǯ ϐ buy gifts for? Truth is, we probably all have someone in our life who has either got it all or doesn’t have enough, which gift could perfectly satiate their needs. I’ve got a friend who’s like that, and every year I rack my brain to try to come up with an idea for the perfect gift — something that he’ll really enjoy, but also something he really wants. Every year it’s a struggle, and sometimes I hit the mark, sometimes I don’t. When it comes to America’s wealthier citizens, this Ǥ whatever they want, how do you get them something that they don’t already have? They want for nothing, so what could they possibly want? The answer to that dilemma is right here in our November/December issue. We’ve spent the past few months searching for the best and brightest gifts out ǡ ǡ Ǥ And to make things more interesting, we even polled our staff to get some of their top pics for the new year, with things that they may want personally or lust after themselves. Between all these choices, we’ve got a pretty wide variety of products, and we’re sure you’ll ϐ Ǥ

THE UNINTENTIONAL PRIVATE AIRCRAFT CHARTER COMPANY BY DAVID NORTON
Starved for time and looking for luxury that matches their success, many corporate leaders are considering the purchase of a private jet. But what some don’t know is that the purchase itself can put an owner in jeopardy by essentially creating a new commercial aircraft charter company by accident. This scenario can arise when owners don’t pay attention to rules dictated by both the Federal Aviation Administration and the Internal Revenue Service. Fundamentally, if a corporate aircraft owner is accepting compensation from anyone who borrows that aircraft — even ‹ˆ ‹–ǯ• Œ—•– ”‡‹Â?„—”•‡Â?‡Â?– ˆ‘” –Š‡ …‘•– ‘ˆ –Š‡ Ď?Ž‹‰Š– ƒÂ?† even if it is only payments by the individual who owns the company in the ϔ‹”•– ’Žƒ…‡ — then the aircraft company has essentially become a …‘Â?Â?‡”…‹ƒŽ …ƒ””‹‡”Ǥ ”‘Ď?‹– Â?‘–‹˜‡ ‹• Â?‘– ”‡“—‹”‡†ǥ Â?‘” ‹• Â?‘Â?‡–ƒ”› remuneration as long as the owner receives something of value in ”‡–—”Â? ˆ‘” –Š‡ Ď?Ž‹‰Š–Ǥ Operating a commercial aircraft charter means abiding by a more stringent set of regulations and paying more in taxes. New aircraft owners may try to mitigate their risks (and maximize income tax breaks) by creating a subsidiary “limited liability company,â€? with the aircraft as its only asset. Although this move is intended to protect the “main company’sâ€? assets, the creation of the LLC can actually ruin the best defense in a liability claim since the LLC is essentially an illegal commercial carrier. But don’t be discouraged. While making the decision to purchase a private jet can be both exhilarating and daunting, by learning the rules and setting up the right structure „‡ˆ‘”‡ signing on the dotted line, owners can guard against potential pitfalls on their way to the open skies.

DYNAMIC TRAINING The deadlift, bench press and squat are your foundational exercises. They’re great for strength, learning proper form and all-around muscular development. Once you’ve mastered them, add to them! If you like to deadlift, add an upright row and a military press. That’s one rep. If you love doing pull-ups, do a leg raise at the top of every rep. Better yet, do a leg raise at the top and bottom of every rep. You’ll get ϐ ǡ matches your routine. Some of these exercises are advanced, so always make sure your form is close to perfect — that’s why the foundations are so important.
REBOUND Small enough to travel with and set up right in your hotel room. Don’t worry about having extra-high ceilings! Actually the goal is not to bounce as high as you can but to apply enough force and control so you don’t go too high. Mini-trampoline routines are excellent for the joints. This type of workout is also great to cleanse the lymphatic system. Plus, it’s fun.
USE A KETTLEBELL A not-so-secret secret of Russian strongmen, kettlebells will increase your strength just by using them for a similar movement as you would a dumbbell. If you use 30-pound dumbbells for front raises, start doing single-arm kettlebell swings with 30 Ǥ ϐ ǡ handle heavier dumbbells because of the core strength you’ve built. And yes, women, especially, should use kettlebells, almost exclusively.
FUNCTIONAL TRAINING
ǯ ϐ routinely perform every day, then you’re risking an injury. Once you start mimicking your daily activities in the gym, you want to strengthen the muscles you most commonly use, and strengthen the muscles that are weakest or overcompensating. Then those same daily activities won’t take so much out of you anymore. If you’re an athlete, move in the gym the way you move while playing your sport. If you walk all day, practice walking while holding heavy dumbbells at your sides. If you sit at a desk all day, strengthen your posture, neck and back. Practice relaxation exercises. If you’re an analyst and your job requires your left brain to be on overdrive, learn meditation. And if you’re a pit crew girl, then start doing core work and throwing around hot tires in the gym!

Take a moment to look around. What can be seen is a formulation of once single systems, traditions, strategies and information, now all producing new useful technologies. Phones can perform jobs once only a TV or computer could do, and iPods make Discmans unnecessary. There are mixed martial arts, pilates, hatha yoga and EFT. All kinds of labels are being destroyed. Even because of some raw foods’ high-quality nutrition value, desserts can be called dinner and dinner, desserts. What are the possibilities when a drug can be called a natural remedy and a natural remedy a drug? The Greek physician Hippocrates, known as the father of western medicine, stated an important truth: “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.” The modern world is seeing a return to food being used as medicine. Now, more than 2000 years since Hippocrates’ lifetime, natural ϐ Ǧ be introduced. This is the ultimate re-naturalization. ϐ ǡ Ǥ It has obtained an IND — Investigational New Drug status Ȅ ϐ Ǥ ϐ ǡ they can be. Dr. Sung Baek explains, “Our goal is not to turn our naturaceuticals into drugs, but only to label them as such. The message we want to get across is that a food cannot only be a medicine, but can also be as potent as a drug — just as potent as any other drug, and still as effective.” ǡ ϐ ϐ to catch onto: tonic herbs that can be taken every day with no side effects. These are necessary because of the constant change in a body’s needs, requiring a different diet from month to month, or even day to day. Other herbs that are categorized as tonics can still become toxic for these same reasons. Herbs that work at the energetic level cannot. It’s sometimes said the modern-day life expectancy has improved much because of the advancements in medicine. This can be misleading, especially if based on the perception that medicine can only be found in a chemical pharmacy. In some major aspects, yes, things like antibiotics have been proven to save lives in the days when it was new. Medical science has evolved since those ǡ Ǥ ϐ Ǧ
more important to improve upon than anything else. Foods, herbs and medicines people use on a daily basis are forms of communication too. They tell the cells and organs in the body to do their jobs better Ǥ ϐ to have a quality of life to enjoy all other technologies. The real contributors to our increased average life span are really genetics and information. How do genetics get better with every generation? It’s because of new information learned that is put to use. When does an advance occur in certain areas over others? It’s how that new information is used. When it was discovered that scurvy could be cured with vitamin C, that was certainly an advance in medicine, but it didn’t involve making a new medicine. ϐ that new medicine could be used. Instead of synthetic vitamin C pills made in a lab, it was found that the vitamin C from limes was the answer. Similar solutions are appropriate for many common ϐ Ǥ for decades, and a peak is being reached. It’s out with the old and in with the new and old combined. Probiotics are a great example of how the mindset of doctors is changing in order to offer the best treatments to their patients. Instead of killing all bacteria with antibiotics, probiotics are being used to replace the good bacteria, protecting the immune system so there are no negative side effects. The body is built up and can regulate itself instead of killing what is unwanted synthetically. Botanicals strengthen the body too. Botanicals are what nature

When botanical medicine is ingested, where there’s a need for it, it breaks apart and becomes useful. If there is no use for it, then it has no effect on the body and there’s no harm done. main source of information was through schooling. Now we live in an information-rich world. There’s no lack of information anywhere. Thanks to Google, we have access to the biggest library — the internet — and it can be shared, globally, more easily than ever. It’s only the willingness to seek it out and knowing who to trust that is necessary. It’s not uncommon now for patients who are keeping up with the times to know more than their doctors. Western medicine has made patients too passive in the process of their own healing. The best doctors today are working with their patients — with the ‹Â?ˆ‘”Â?ƒ–‹‘Â? –Š‡› Ď?‹Â?† ƒŽ‘Â?‰ ™‹–Š –Š‡‹” ‹Â?–—‹–‹‘Â?ÇĄ Â?‘– ƒ‰ƒ‹Â?•– –Š‡Â?Ǥ They are acting as assistants so people can take control of their health and learn. Prevention is the key to start approaching health differently, although it’s just a starting point, and only a positive effect of a different mindset. In other words, it’s better to prevent getting sick rather than wait to get sick and then heal. An even better approach is to make a goal independent of a negative concept. How often are goals reached that are based on a problem instead of possibilities? Not many. And if they are reached, it’s temporary. “I want to lose 20 pounds.â€? “I want to beat my depression.â€? TAPPING THE BARREL One-on-One With Eddie Osterland, Master Sommelier BY KEVIN WHIPPS For the past year here at Jetset, we’ve spent some time introducing ϔ ǯ ϔ sommelier, Eddie Osterland. But as it turns out, Osterland has quite a story of his own to tell. We recently sat down with him to talk about his past, his future, and the industry as a whole. How did you decide to get into the wine business? I’m feeling great on my own, living in Hawaii, going to graduate school, making enough money to live, and thinking that this is great. And one night, the maître d’, at about 10 minutes to 6, comes walking ǡ ϐ and key — it’s the thing the wine steward wore in the restaurant. Then I was working with a professional taster in France, which I thought was really great. NO 5: METROPOLITAN GRILL Eat your next amazing steak in a historical setting. The Metropolitan Grille in Seattle, Wash., is situated in an intimate location inside the Marion Building, which was built in 1903. To get the best results, they use only corn-fed USDA Prime beef shipped in from Nebraska, as well as American Wagyu located in Idaho. Then the meat is dropped onto mesquite charcoal to lock in all of those juices needed in an amazing steak. If you want something really special, try the Chateaubriand which is carved right at your table, and top it off with a Smokey Met, the Metropolitan Grill’s own special martini. 820 Second Avenue Seattle, Wash. 206.624.3287 November . BIG TIME BUYING A YACHT OR JET DOESN’T HAVE TO BREAK THE BANK BY KEVIN WHIPPS
T
here’s no doubt about it, buying a yacht or a private jet is an expensive proposition, even when just looked at on the surface. But once you delve deeper, there are other costs, such as the crew, maintenance, storage fees and everything else that comes with owning a piece of machinery for upwards of $3 million. Even more troublesome, if you don’t use it very often, those maintenance bills start to grow, as these machines need to be used to stay in tip-top shape. So what are you supposed to do if you want a private jet or yacht, but don’t necessarily need it every day? The answer lies in fractional ownership, a concept that allows ϐ ǡ original price. Although there are some people who think that this is just a way for the less fortunate to seem richer than they actually are, it can be a very smart decision both in the long term and on ϐ Ǥ

ou know the scenario: you’ve got just one day to see Chicago and everything it has to offer. How do you squeeze it all in? With a good plan and some solid insider tips, that’s how, and fortunately, we’ve got it all covered.
8:00 AM: Fly into Chicago by private jet and land at Chicago Executive Airport, the third-largest airport in the Chicago area. Meet your private car and get your palate warmed up, because it’s time to grab some chow.
8:30 AM: Time for a healthy breakfast, so try Protein Bar, a healthy favorite among the locals. Try the Crackberry, a granola mixed with your choice of yogurt, fresh bananas and açai berries, plus it’s only 345 calories with 6 grams of fat.
9:00 AM: Go ahead and do something touristy, it’s the beginning of the day and you deserve it. Hit Millennium Park and check out The Bean, the famous chrome statue situated in front of the Chicago Opera Theatre. Take some pics and spend a moment here, because it’s beautiful. 10:00 AM: Go south and see the John G. Shedd Aquarium, which isn’t quite as touristy as you’d think. Walk around the mammoth campus and take it all in.
11:00 AM: Hop on a water taxi (no seriously, they’re a blast) and enjoy the wind from Lake Michigan as you head toward Navy Pier. People-watching is just part of the fun here.

12:00 PM: Lunch time, so now it’s off to The Signature Room at the 95th, where the views will take your breath away.

The surrounding area is pretty nice too, so make sure that you take it all in. 3:00 PM: Go just a touch farther and check out Wrigley Field, the second-oldest baseball stadium in the MLB. If it’s baseball season, catch a game — it’s totally worth it. If not, at least take the tour, because ϐ Ǥ ǯ whole curse thing, natives are a bit touchy after 103 years.

Formerly known as the Sears Tower, this building now has a glass viewing area that puts spectators out 4.3 feet from the building and up 1,353 feet in the air. Hope you’re not afraid of heights. 7:30 PM: Finish the night off right with dinner at Sixteen at Trump International Hotel & Tower. ith the allure of name-brand boutiques, high-end restaurants and world-famous Broadway shows, no one ever questions why New York City appeals to the millions who visit each year. Museums, however, aren’t always a part of the itinerary. They should be, because the galleries and salons that make this must-see list are hardly the dusty artifacts of yore. Instead, these museums embrace technology, encourage interaction with the artists and even excite jaded New Yorkers — along with teaching patrons a thing or two in the process. outed as the New Las Vegas, or Asia’s Monte Carlo, Macau is truly a luxe destination. With nine Michelin-rated restaurants, 33 casinos, dozens of palatial resorts and home to the Macau Grand Prix, this sunny destination has quickly turned into a second home for many elite travelers. Once a Portuguese colony, the Macanese culture has become an unconventional combination of Portuguese and Chinese tradition, making for a vibrantly cultivated destination. Every year it seems a new resort casino is built, hoping to outdo the last. Amid this chaotic neon landscape, lies pure and utter luxury; ϐ Ǧ ϐ Ǥ ǡ guessing and pay close attention to these elite standouts.

Ladies in Red THE RED FERRARIS OF THE RALPH LAUREN COLLECTION By Emmanuel Lupe Photography Provided By Ralph Lauren
A
merican fashion designer Ralph Lauren developed his brand around the image of an elite, American lifestyle, and in the process built one of the world’s most successful fashion empires. After high school, he took business classes at night school and worked in sales by day. While working for a tie company, he was inspired to begin designing his own neckwear, and in 1967 he went into business for himself, changing his last name to Lauren and marketing his unique line of ties under the name Polo. From the inception of his brand, Lauren’s creations were characterized by a moneyed style that evoked the look of English aristocracy, as adapted by the sporty, East Coast American elite. In 1972, Lauren debuted what would become his signature piece: the mesh sport shirt, available in a variety of colors and featuring his trademark emblem of the most aristocratic of athletes, the polo player. The Ralph Lauren style became a nationwide phenomenon ͳͻͶ ϐ The Great Gatsby in clothing from his current line. Lauren’s vision appealed to a wide spectrum of people, and his label quickly turned into an empire. Seeing how his clothing was associated with a certain lifestyle, in 1983 he expanded his business to include a range of home accessories that would eventually include pillows, throws, bed and bath products, furniture, and household paint. Ralph Lauren is also known worldwide for his outstanding automobile collection. A selection of the most prestigious sports cars from the 1930s to the present day was recently on view for the ϐ ǯ ± ± Ǥ outstanding cars, chosen by curator Rodolphe Rapetti and put Ǧ ǡ European automobile history. With this collection, Ralph Lauren showed that the automobile is a major art form created by the ǯ ǣ ǡ ǡ ǡ Ǧ Benz, Jaguar, Porsche and of course, Ferrari, the high point of this unique collection. Patiently assembled over several decades by the fashion designer in a quest for speed and performance, it includes some of the most extraordinary jewels in the crown of European automobile history, with beauty as its common denominator. Within Lauren’s collection are some of the most elegant and innovative cars in automotive ǡ ϐ Ǥ

1958 FERRARI 250 TESTA ROSSA The 250 Testa Rossa, nicknamed Red Head, owes its name to the red camshaft covers of its V12 3-liter engine. Made by Carrozzeria Scaglietti and adapted from a design by Pinin Farina that introduced a torpedo-shaped body, the car had a headrest that stuck out above the bodywork and integrated headlights behind a protruding plexiglass windscreen. The very particular line of this vehicle proved to be primarily functional, rather than aesthetic. Indeed, the originality of the pontoon fenders enabled the wheels to remain ϐ Ǥ 168 mph, its 300 cv engine carried it to victory on numerous occasions, including in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1958, 1960 and 1961. Lauren’s car is the 14th of 34 similar examples produced by Ferrari.

NATIVE SON JOSÉ BOISJOLI BRINGS BRP INTO THE 21ST CENTURY BY KEVIN WHIPPS IMAGES PROVIDED BY BRP

n America, we have Henry Ford, and in Canada, they have J.-Armand Bombardier. Although most people located south of The Great White North have never heard of him, just walk through the streets of Montréal and you’ll see his name plastered on everything from buses to subway cars and everything in between. Fact is, he’s a bit of a legend around those parts, so much so that the person in charge of running one of his companies has a heavy responsibility on their shoulders. Today, that man is José Boisjoli, the current CEO of BRP. But before we get into his story, let’s go back to Bombardier, the man who started it all. Although Canada is an easy area to navigate today, prior to World War II, traveling anywhere in the Eastern providence of Quebec during the winter was quite the task. What Bombardier wanted to do was build a personal motorcraft that could traverse the snowy grounds with ease, and become a one-man car for the winter. But this was no easy task; in fact, while in the middle of building one of his prototypes during the worst part of the
winter, his son fell ill. With no way to transport him to the nearest hospital located miles away, he was forced to watch his son die. That drove him to complete the project quicker, that way he avoided more potential suffering in the process. His basic concept works like this: put skis on the front of a vehicle to steer and control the movement. Then put treads in the back to provide traction against the snow. The unique

Bombardier’s brilliant idea was to use rubber treads instead of metal, and pair two pieces of rubber together, linked side by side with metal teeth designed for digging into the snow. But he couldn’t turn the treads with regular tires, and he wanted to use those tires because it would help with ride quality. Instead, he connected the treads to a gear that ran down a shaft and connected to the transmission on the drivetrain. This kept the track aligned and moving forward, but also allowed for movement with the 106

IN TUNE PATRICK DEMPSEY GOES FROM ACTING TO RACING BY KEVIN WHIPPS INTERVIEW BY EMMANUEL LUPE
atrick Dempsey has owned many titles over the years, including Broadway actor, vaudeville performer and even “McDreamy,” the nickname he earned in his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on ABC’s popular drama Grey’s Anatomy. But recently, he’s added another title to his resume: professional race car driver. And believe it or not, he’s actually pretty good. But before we get into the nuances of his life behind the wheel, Dempsey’s story prior to the racetrack deserves to be told. Dempsey didn’t start his life wanting to be an actor. As he was growing up in Maine, the plan was to become an Olympic long skier, so he focused most of his time and energy on the slopes. But in the off season, he would ride a unicycle just for a bit of fun. “I picked up the unicycle and I got involved in a vaudeville troop,” Dempsey explains. “I started performing and got used to being in front of an audience, and then I started acting. One thing led to another, and all of these opportunities came up. I found myself in New York City, acting — quite by accident, actually.” It was the 1980s, and although he wasn’t quite old enough to strike out on his own, he went ahead and did it anyway, running away to join the theater in New York. The opportunities started to come after that, and he appeared in some pretty big movies of the era, culminating with the 1987 classic Can’t Buy Me Love. Things were looking promising for the young actor with the striking good looks.

But then things started to stumble a little bit, with the roles becoming less prominent, and a lesser man might have given up on his dreams. But not Dempsey. “I had to kind of stick it out, and I’m glad I did, because it really taught me a lot, going through that experience. I had a lot very early on, so I learned what that was like, and then I learned what it was like to be cold and not getting the roles,” Dempsey recalls. “I was always working, but it was also ϐ Ǥdz As a result, Dempsey is very humble — not the kind of stuckup Hollywood actor that many others might be at his stage of the game. “I think it makes me appreciate everything I have now that much more,” he says. “And it makes me work that much harder.

Because I know that the door can be open one minute and then closed the next, so you have to constantly stay ahead and keep looking down the road.” This modesty is part of his charm, and in part, why he was able to land the role of Dr. Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, the character that pushed him to the forefront again in 2005. But it wasn’t as easy as one might think. “Well, at the beginning, I didn’t know [the show] was going to get picked up after we did the pilot; I had no idea it was a mid-season replacement,” Dempsey says. “ABC, at the time, didn’t think too highly of it. All of the [other] shows, they had these great expectations, [but] they didn’t do as well. And then we came mid-season, and the whole thing exploded.”

The Skip Barber Racing School has locations all across the country, including one at Laguna Seca raceway in California. Once Dempsey took the course there, he moved on to other schools, and just became hooked. “For me, it was a great escape — a really nice place to relax, to challenge yourself mentally and physically,â€? he says. “I like the camaraderie a lot, and a lot of guys I started with, I’m still racing with, which is good.â€? It does seem like a rather cliche thing for an actor to do, but in Dempsey’s case, it makes more sense than most would think. “It reminds me of the ski racing,â€? It came with a lot of hard work, but it was certainly a life-changing moment.â€? On the surface, Dempsey may seem like just another pretty face, but it turns out he’s much more than that. He’s a father, a husband, a charity worker, and — oh yeah — an actor. Grey’s Anatomy is in its eighth season, and still going strong, but if it ever happens to have a hiccup in the future, Dempsey has it all covered. After all, he is a professional race car driver.

As anyone who’s ever watched a Winter Olympics has noticed, the Swiss are pretty damn good on a pair of skis. That can be attributed to the proximity to world-class peaks such as the Matterhorn, Jungfrau and other parts of the Alps. There are a large number of ski resorts throughout the country, enabling ϐ run. When researching potential visiting locations, make sure to check the number of black, red and blue runs to get a gauge on the intensity of skills needed (remember, the Alps dwarf pretty much everything in the continental U.S.) as well as the basics, such as the times of the last lifts and the apres-ski offerings in the area. Some must-visits include: Zermatt, which boasts the highest (3,900 meters) as well as one of the biggest (394 kilometers) ski areas in the country; Le Chable has the highest accessible vertical at 2,480 meters; and Zuoz at St. Moritz is regarded as the best snowboarding runs in Switzerland. Of course, there also those travelers in life who, while they respect the skills of a person traveling at high speeds down a mountain in only a pair of goggles and boots, prefer to test their sporting skills in other ways. For them, we suggest the other national sport of Switzerland, Schwingen (pronounced schwingen). of Goliath-defeating fame) was to be carved from a block of Carrara marble more than 17 feet tall. After seeing unsuccessful starts by two different artists, the “hunk” of marble sat abandoned for two decades until a 26-year-old named Michelangelo Buonarroti persuaded the Opera del Duomo in 1501 that he was the right man for the job. Three years later, the completed work was considered too artistically groundbreaking — and too heavy — for its intended location. Instead, “David” was placed outside Palazzo Vecchio (at that time, city hall) where it remained until 1873, when it was moved to the Galleria dell’ Accademia. The copy of the sculpture standing in Piazza della Signoria, however, remains heavily photographed, as taking photos of the real one is forbidden. Despite the “David” replica’s presence in Piazza della Signoria, there is one public place in Florence that is even more famous: San Giovanni Square and the adjacent Piazza del Duomo, the spectacular views of which nothing could have prepared me for. When I reached Via della Oriuolo, the street opened up to reveal a scene much larger Ȅ ϐ Ǥ John, and beyond it, the elaborate facade of the enormous Duomo,

The baptistry, one of the oldest buildings anywhere in the city, is where all Florentine Catholics were baptized from about 1100 through the 19th century. Particularly famous are its bronze doors, which feature relief sculptures depicting scenes from the Bible. The north and east doors were designed by Ghiberti and took 20 years to complete. Michelangelo dubbed the east pair the “Gates of Paradise” — a phrase by which they are still known today. ϐ ȋ Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower), the Duomo is certainly a sight to behold. The Last Judgment frescoes on the ceiling of the Duomo
The cathedral’s construction began in 1296 in the Gothic style by Arnolfo di Cambio, a Tuscan architect and sculptor who also designed Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio and the Basilica of Santa Croce (where the exalted Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli are all buried). After di Cambio’s death in 1302, many different architects contributed their expertise, and by 1418 — more than 120 years ϐ Ȅ ϐ Ǥ ǡ in Rome with his good friend Donatello, was to have the honor of ǯ ϐ Ǥ In that age, no one knew how to construct a dome of such unprecedented size. Brunelleschi, however, showing extraordinary skill in the areas of mathematics, architecture, physics and engineering, managed to complete the job using ingenious methods, including the invention of a contraption to hoist the more than 4 million bricks required for the project. Completed in 1436, the octagonal dome was considered so brilliant that upon Brunelleschi’s death 10 years later, the Florentines buried him in the church’s crypt, alongside their popes and Florentine bishops. Venturing inside the Duomo, I discovered the interior to be unexpectedly sparse, but I was told this is because many of the original decorations have been relocated to the adjacent Museo dell’ Opera del Duomo (Museum of the Works of the Cathedral). Nevertheless, there are still some prominent features, namely the lovely stained glass windows and oversized clock above the church’s entryway. Unusual to modern viewers, the timepiece tells 128

Here, at the order of Cosimo I, the ceiling was covered between 1568 and 1579 with a mosaic of restored frescoes collectively called The Last Judgment. Although Renaissance experts consider them as a whole to be “uninspired” (as they are the work of more than one artist and therefore inconsistent in technique and vision), the frescoes are colorful and individually spectacular.
