Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI) is the world’s largest youth and music network with member organizations and partners in more than 80 countries, developing demand-driven programs that empower youth on local, national and international levels. JMI is a “glocal” non-governmental organization that enables young people to develop through music across all boundaries. Over 36,000 diverse musical events are held each year in JMI’s 63 member organizations alone, reaching almost 5 million young people aged up to the age of 30. For 66 years, JMI has been ‘Making a Difference through Music’, using the power of music to bridge social, geographical and cultural divides and create an international platform for intercultural dialogue.

A message from the President
Making a Bigger Difference I am sitting at my computer ‘travelling’ the JMI-world online, and I’m impressed. I’m charmed by the pictures from the work of the Pembroke Academy in the UK. I’m enthralled by the documentary on JM Germany’s summer opera. I’m looking at delightful clips of the Youth Orchestra of Neojiba in Brazil. I feel extremely happy about the Choral Crossroads in Cyprus, of all the Imagine festivals, the growing Ethnos, the Music Crossroads activities, the young audiences concerts, competition winners, and so, so many other things. There is today fortunately a lot of this to be found on the internet. You can sense it, you can get a vivid image of it and you get easily amazed. But still, this is not the real thing. To experience the true depth and the profound impact of all our programs, projects, concerts, camps, workshops, you have to be there, because the core of what we are working with is about something unique and special that happens between us when we play music together, when we experience live music together – when we interact and react. This exchange and human communication is also a main ‘raison d’être’ for our entire network. “No man is an island” – we have so much to gain if we unassumingly and with curiosity take advantage of all the experiences, ideas and know-how that during all years has been embedded in our JMI network. Music can make a difference. Working cleverly and working trustfully together it can make an even bigger difference. Sincerely Yours, Per Ekedahl President

our credo For 66 years JMI has recognized music as an important tool for building sustainable human development cooperation, as music brings people together, breaking down barriers, creating platforms for dialogue and boosting the creative potential for innovative sounds and musical landscapes. Our main objectives are for young people, musicians and audiences to have access to music. Providing opportunities for young people to explore different realms of expression, imagination and creation through music improves not only young people’s mental well-being and confidence, but can be a catalyst to growth and change. As such we advocate for quality formal and non-formal music education for young people and greater music learning for young audiences. JMI takes an important role in providing opportunities for young people’s personal development. Young musicians are given the chance to perform, gain visibility, and make careers from the skills they have worked so hard to develop, providing them with confidence to take their first important steps in their musical careers.
The world of tomorrow belongs to the young people of today. They are the agents of change, and music is one of their most powerful and dedicated means, a true language of expression. JMI works to help young people realize their dreams through music because we believe that their voices must be heard. Engaging with music can help young people develop the self-esteem they need to assert themselves within their personal and community spheres, taking action in directly shaping the norms, values, beliefs and principles of tomorrow and the course of their future in their respective society. Every event is based on the belief that the powerful force of music can positively affect young people’s lives.

The Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra (UNESCO Artist for Peace)
Bringing forth a new symphonic sound to world audiences Âť www.jmwo.net
In 1949, JMI created The Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, the first international youth orchestra of its kind. Partnering with key international orchestras and working with top class young musicians, soloists and conductors including Zubin Mehta, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Dutoit, Yakov Kreizberg and Kurt Masur. The orchestra has to date toured in over 30 countries, bringing together around 5,000 musicians and touching an audience of 2 million people. The Orchestra was bestowed the title of UNESCO Artist for Peace in 1997. After successful run for 60 years, JMI has paused to rethink the new Orchestra model for the future. We are set for discovering symphonic music of the world and bringing it to the world audience, the new plan set to re-launch the orchestra as of 2012. Following the adoption of the new artistic concept by the JMI AGA in Tanzania 2010, JMI has, in full support and cooperation with JM Germany, established partnership with the Berlin Philharmoniker.

The Young Audience Music Awards
The search for shining eyes…
s
» www.yama-award.com
The Young Audiences Music Awards recognizes the best productions from around the world dedicated to young audiences between the ages of 0 and 18. These performances must exhibit the qualities of an experience that awakens something deeper within audiences, connecting them with rhythm, culture, harmony and humanity. An internal pilot of the awards was conducted internally in 2008 with the first public award taking place in 2010. Young Audiences productions create access to quality music performances for young people and children, bridging the gap between art and pedagogy. Performances often bring across a positive social message or aim to sensitize young audiences to different types of music that they would not normally be exposed to.

JMI Meetings & Trainings
Building capacities, strengthening relationships, doing more together. Over 220 professional staff and more than 2000 volunteers cater for the annual local and international activities of the JMI network. The JMI Platform Meeting serves as a focal point for JMI members’ representatives to get together, exchange opinions and ideas, discuss and steer all international JMI programs and initiatives. Some 45 members of JMI Commissions, Committees and Working Groups came together February 2010 in Belgrade; to follow up and pursue the works of each entity on the spot, preparing for the reports and presentations at the 65th JMI AGA in Tanzania. An Orientation Workshop focusing on strategic planning for network working entities was held to strengthen the JMI Strategy 2011-2015. The 65th JMI Annual General Assembly was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from the 18th to the 21st of
July under the title ‘Unite through Music’, it has focused on Music Crossroads International, a flagship JMI project, in connection with the MCI Inter-Regional Festival showcasing youth groups from Africa with selected guests from European IMAGINE Festivals. In addition to participating in network development discussions, representatives of JMI member organizations from around the world took part in a workshop focused on the future JMI development strategy, and a donor panel outlining prospects for funding youth music organizations in Tanzania. The AGA laid the grounds for the development of the new JMI strategy for the period 2011-2015, redefining JMI as a development organization and placing the international JMI programs as key careers of the JMI
brand, mission and development objectives. The JMI Executives Meeting is a unique platform that gathers the executive officers (directors, general secretaries) from our member organizations. It enables them to debate strategic development issues from an executive perspective. Following the adoption of the JMI Strategy 2011-2015 the latest Executives Meeting in Brussels, Belgium held in November 2010 focused on monitoring and evaluation mechanisms and instruments for evaluating JMI Programs and Action Plans. It was held on the occasion of the celebration of 70 years Jeunesses Musicales in Belgium.
