Work Placement Diary 2021 Week 1

Initially, I was completely thrilled to have gotten the chase to do my Work Placement with Studio Output. I was a bit intimidated at first, because I was aware the industry is going to be a whole world apart from the studio pace, we’ve gotten used over the last 3 years. I found myself questioning where the work I’ve done has truly prepared me for an actually Work Placement Brief. I was constantly nervous, at the begging, because it meant that I had to pull off a load of great work within in a week/two, and I usually I’m quite picky, critical and slow when it comes to showcasing outcomes that I would consider good design practice. It turned out great in the end, I was quite fond of all the work I’ve done, and I definitely can see myself doing more self-initiated work. The week started off very early at 9 am with a meeting, where I’ve gotten to meet the team of Studio Output. I was also sitting in on different studio meeting they’ve had over the week, typically on Wednesday evening, surprisingly enough, as late as 7 pm. I’ve actually presented some of my own work that I’ve done over the week for the IWMI brief, and I was a fun experience, a bit daunting, as they were all professionals. They seem to have liked the work that I was doing. Apart from showcasing the work I’ve done within the studio, I’ve also had chats with each member of the team, where they explained their roles with in the studio. I’ve also had the pleasure to view loads of different project they have been working on during the week, which I found very helpful with my own brief. I was very pleased by the end of the week.

Week 1 Concept Boards

Day 1

The first day started bright and early, already at 9 am, I was anxiously waiting for my email invite for the initial Zoom meeting, which was followed by an extensive welcome meeting, where I was introduced to members of the team. We not only discussed their work, but I also had the pleasure of showing a bit of my portfolio as well. After a milion meetings, I was introduced to my ‘tutor’ , Charlotte, she and I went through the IWM brief, during the afteroon. After that, I’ve spent hours researching the IWM for futher exploration and designing which was scheduled to start on Day 2.

Day 3

Having now spent the entire day, contemplating which concept I wanted to use as my IWM Identity, Joanna incouraged me to create as many concepts as I can, she also encouraged me to explore a bit of type, having said ‘find atleast 10 different typaces that you know will do the job’. During my first few days, I was tasked to do a bit of research after the intensive analysis of the IWM brief. So upon that, I decided to use Adobe XD to create research and concept boards, where I would import references, brainstorm ideas and start designing, as well.

Work Placement Diary 2021 Week 2

I had my own ‘team’, which consisted of Charlotte and I, a Senior Designer working for Studio Output. We’ve quickly decided when to meet through the week, and worked through different hurdles that I have come across when I’ve received the brief. Charlotte was amazing at tutoring me, and sharing her knowledge with me throughout the whole experience. I was very relaxed and at ease, when showcasing all my work to her. I’ve learnt a lot. Ended up creating 4 different concept routes, over 100 artboard and 3 different mood boards in Abode XD over the course of 2 weeks, which was phenomenal. Charlotte was very supportive, and was I told by here, to keep her posted on all my other self-initiated work, after the Work Placement, which felt great and gratifying, in a sense. It meant I was doing somewhat of a good job. I’ve also meet up with Joanna, the Creative Director, a couple of times through the week. She gave me great pointers and I’ve continued on until the end of the week. I was very pleased that I’ve gotten to do a complete presentation for the whole team by the end of the Work Placement. I felt very proud and generally have a great time. My brief consisted of logo design, loads of concept branding and type research. The IWM Institute wanted a refreshed identity that would combine the contemporary with an omen to old stories. Charlotte and I, met up 3 times, during a workday, I’ve was really getting into the extensive work schedule and load, I’ve felt really at home by the end of the experience. I felt really focused and determined with the all the work I was doing. I also made a realization, that I love doing all it, meaning that I had chosen the right University degree for myself.

Day 5

Soon after, Charlotte told me to keep exploring the checkered pattern I have produced, as it went perfectly with my concept. It payed omage to the old historic stories the museum has housed, and it was a new way of using shapes and patterns as a graphic language. The IWM was looking for a fresh visual language, however we were instructed to keep the Institute standard with the colours and the logo, so that is why I went with the monochromatic primary colours. I also worked within Illustrator to develop new shapes apart from primary ones. Charlotte said it reminded her of an Adidas campaign by Studio Dumbar.

Day 7

I remember I was dreading pairing the Institute logo with the old IWM section that we had to keep, so I was putting it off until I had my graphic devices, typeface and colours all set up. It was quite a challenge because it was the first time I was actually designing an existing logo, not only that, but the logo had a prexisting part that had to be kept. Even when I tried to reinvent a new way to finesse it, the IWM block was disrupting my design. I also paired up the pattern I’ve done, with the keywords I have collected from the client brief. One big thing that I learned while I was on WP was to stick to a fast pace schedule.

Day 9

During my last few days, I learnt a bit about the way of presenting work, having worked on a fast pace pitch deck, I aquired skills in creating all other PDFs I needed for school work. I also practiced presenting my in front of the whole team, being I was a part of their weekly meetings. It was taunting at first because I nervous, but I ended up doing fine. Joanna ended up commenting on my my entire pitch deck and how well it ended up being. Everybody else, as well, was very pleased with the project outcomes, as they’ve done the same brief a while ago. A different perspective was well appreciated.
