Pleasure Beach Pleasure Beach project focuses on the pursuit of pleasure and its relationship with architecture. Our first task was to research various types of pleasures present in the British seaside and juxtapose them against an exaggerated version of that type of pleasure. This research was later conceptualized in an attempt to allocate ideas of buildings primary functionality and begin the further exploration of architectural responses. The research phase concluded with a trip to Blackpool to get familiar with the context and pick the potential site for the project. The town of Blackpool offers an incredibly rich environment for architectural intervention. Its unique condition, fostered by isolation and former success as a tourist attraction, remains globally relevant. It is an exaggeration of society in miniature, a scale model of global ideology, a revealing theatrical performance. It is a prime example of destruction and degradation, both physical and cultural. This old English town fell victim to globalization, struggling to maintain its former beauty and unique image in the sea of uniformity. Blackpool Tower was chosen as representation of the town driven by an idea of transforming the landmark to impact the context as a whole. In the end, design approach was influenced by a number of factors: deconstructivist precedents, absurdity of destruction in cinematography, and a range of development drawings and scale models.

Fictional B Movie Poster 4
Tokyo tower was chosen as an object to be destroyed with an aim to study random deformation and form creation patterns. Due to the popularity of kaiju (monster) movies in Japan, the city of Tokyo is the one getting systematically destroyed in cinematographic productions. It also happens to have a similar urban landmark to that of Blackpool – Tokyo Tower. Carefully created and photographed, scale models of Tokyo Tower are based on the analysis of a number of stills taken from films and animation sequences depicting the destruction of the tower, that
is, its scale model duplicate. New model images are then combined to create an accumulative image influenced by overlapping and manipulating somewhat controlled patterns of destruction. While manipulation is controlled, the image itself combines historical cinematographic precedents with their genuinely random deformations and organizes them in a specific and calculated way to create a reference starting point for design process.

Development Model 9
Blackpool Monster is an architectural parasite, lured out of the sea by the weakness of Blackpool, its failure to adapt to the changes within entertainment and tourism industry and cater to the modern society. Monster exists completely alienated from its surroundings and neglects its context. Much like Blackpool, as a city, neglects its contexts at a larger scale. Monster becomes an entirely self-sufficient and isolated holiday resort concerned with the internal rather than external. The way building interacts with its host becomes a simulation of city’s relationship with a tourist, the exaggeration of capitalism: taking away as much as possible while giving away as little. The parasitic structure becomes a mark permanently residing on the city’s iconic structure.
Moster Exterior Collage 10
Building firmly wraps itself around the existing structure of Blackpool tower penetrating it only to create additional circulation (new elevators and staricases are positioned within the tower’s structure). It drastically changes tower’s appearance which can be seen from many parts of Blackpool. Attached to an already dramatic structure, it pushes the boundary of exaggeration even further by overpowering the tower and rising above it to create an observation chamber and a bungee jumping platform for the most courageous visitors. New building acts as a vetical city, a sanatorium to be enhabited for a week-long stay. Even though the new building is completely separated from the existing, tourists can still access an existing observation platform via an old elevator system.

Internal spaces of the monster are allocated to provide a mixture of accommodation and entertainment venues for the guests of the resort. Designed to be self-sufficient, it offers a number of artificially enhanced experiences that replace the dull environment of Blackpool with a perfect holiday experience. During the night, when the building underneath the tower stands unoccupied, resort guests spill from their isolation to celebrate their stay in the existing key spaces below the tower: The Ballroom, The Circus, and The Arcade. Altered by an intervention of light and sound emitting machinery these spaces create unprecedented environments to be used for a variety of pleasure pursuits. Following drawings show internal spaces and inhabitation of the resort.

Symbiosis of the New and Old 24
Can Ricart
From the initial start of the project and visit of Can Ricart in Barcelona, the main goal was to preserve and capture the feeling of the building in its ruined state. Of something that ceased to serve a functional purpose and being slowly reclaimed by the nature. Taking inspiration from this process, design tries to imitate reclamation process by absorbing the site in its current architectural state and intertwining what already exists with a new building. The current state of Can Ricart was carefully rationalised, deconstructed and broken into geometrical elements, patterns and influences. These patterns were then mixed and reimagined to produce highly distinctive new geometry. The key intention was to keep as much as possible and juxtapose it to something radically new, modern, and even futuristic. Such approach uses two contrasting extremes in an attempt to emphasise their qualities of different architectural languages. Existing grid of Can Ricart was derived from the current Catalan vaulting layout. This grid was then used to orchestrate the rhythm of the massive new insertion on the site, a portal frame structure aimed to accommodate the machines to be built within. The ruined state of the site was captured via broken lines and sharp geometry. History of Can Ricart is embedded everywhere, starting from the roof angles, designed to provide spaces with natural north lighting, down to design of a junction that connects an old wall with a new steel frame.

Site analysis sets up the general theme, a main concept of taking the old and clashing it against the new. It follows the idea of two elements which can coexist in harmony and repel each other simultaneously. It becomes a narrative that unfolds to the observer taking the course through the building. At the first glimpse, observed on the approach to the building, it appears that the new structure dominates over the old. Existing grid is superimposed and clearly defined through the rib structure. It appears to be slicing the existing
walls of Can Ricart and dominating the facade. But as the visitor takes a tour though the building it becomes apparent that it was merely an illusion. On the inside, preserved brick factory walls become the key element as they slice their way through the new ribs - a visual effect achieved by the careful connection detailing and shadow gaps. Such arrangement creates a dialog between the two contrasting elements and makes the viewer question the importance of either.

The summer project, based in three architectural practices, was concerned with modernist landmarks of Newcastle, Gateshead, and Killingsworth. Our topic was the current state of modernist architecture and how it is perceived by modern public. Labelled ‘Urban Amnesia‘, the project focused on discovering and studying such landmarks and suggesting how they can be reinterpreted. I have decided to study Newgate Hotel, located right in the middle of Newcastle. Its prime location contrasted with its current use - a cheap getaway for a night out. It’s image of an outdated icon both ruined a great business opportunity as well as creating a massive solid of concrete in city’s prime location. A landmark people chose to ignore. Through the series of abstractions, site visits and actual exploration of the internal hotel spaces, I came up with a proposal to ‘soften’ the image. Redefine an outdated ideal of modernism, abandoned and forgotten, without completely replacing it. Resulting project creates a modern and welcoming space with a combination of new public spaces, sustainable energy generation and improved hotel experience for a full range of visitors. This new image tries to battle the uniformity of strictly old or new and blur the boundary of what is considered an architectural heritage. Maybe it is time to reconsider what we define as heritage and start to experiment with the omnipresent remnants of the modernist ideal.

Charrette 2013
Charrette is a week-long project in the beginning of an academic year which allows Newcastle University students from different years and courses (architecture, planning and landscape faculties) meet each other and create something in the course of one week. In 2013 our Charrette Condenser group was concerned with an archival task: recording and the work done by the other charrettes over the course of that week and presenting it via various media. This included sound and video installations, printed booklet of the work as well as web coverage of this highly intense week. The general task was to condense the whole week into the one media source. Leading web presence team, I was responsible organising collected information and creating a medium for presenting it to other students or anyone else interested. Main means of collecting it was photography. Vast amounts of pictures taken by our group needed to be collected, processed, and presented in the web. Due to the amount of photographs (and my natural laziness), I realised that the process needs to be automated. Thus, I created a system that automatically processed every picture uploaded to the Dropbox and forwarded it to be posted as a blog entry. Final version of the website featured a library of videos, sounds, and images. Live video of the final event - a presentation of a dozen other charrettes were streamed live to create the maximum coverage of the works created by the students.

Beach Hut The first project in architecture school was to design a beach hut - a small dwelling on the beach to inhabit any activity or personal interest student might possess. My original beach but (not presented here) was inspired be the natural curvature of the waves and encompassed some basic utilities and compact spaces for the activities such as reading and sunbathing. It also acted as a equipment storage for sea related sports. It was a very basic design, so I have made a decision to revisit it during the summer of 2012. Constant visits to the beach of my hometown with my family made me realise how little one actually needs to enjoy the seaside. There was no actual need to create a building - the whole experience of the seaside was to become, for a moment, closer with the nature, to lose yourself within the sand and sea. This realisation led to the creation of the new exceptionally minimalistic design of a beach hut. This design became a mixture of sculpture and installation created to mainly provide visual stimulation as well as some basic shelter from the elements: wind and sunlight. It is an attempt to capture the essence of what trip to the beach means to me and, hopefully, some other people, to create a stimulus for imagination. Is it a wave solidified as a creation of timber? Is it a shelter built out of the futuristic shipwreck? Who knows?
