The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) inspires people to value and steward the plants of the world. Founded in 1891, NYBG is the most comprehensive botanical garden in the world and an integral part of the cultural fabric of New York City, anchored in the Bronx.
For more than 130 years, NYBG has served as illuminator and muse for fashion designers, perfumers, artists, horticulturists, scientists, historians, and architects from around the globe.
Our 250-acre National Historic site is home to renowned exhibitions, immersive botanical experiences, art and music, and events with some of the most influential figures in plant and fungal science, horticulture, and the humanities.
We’re also stewards of globally significant collections, from the rare botanical works of the LuEsther T. Mertz Library to the plant and fungal specimens in the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium, the largest such collection in the Western Hemisphere.
Our expert scientists work across New York City, the nation, and the globe to document the plants and fungi of our world—and find actionable, nature-based solutions to our planet’s dual climate and biodiversity crises.
At NYBG, we’re committed to helping nature thrive so that humanity can thrive.

Herbarium Collections
The William and Lynda Steere Herbarium is the centerpiece of NYBG's botanical research program and one of the largest herbaria in the world. The Herbarium holds a collection of more than seven million preserved specimens. All groups traditionally considered plants –flowering plants, conifers, ferns, mosses, liverworts, and algae, as well as fungi and lichens– are represented in the Herbarium collection, which is particularly strong in specimens from the Americas.

Living Collections
Our 250 acres support over one million living plants in collections of tropical, temperate, and desert flora, arranged in and around historic buildings, meadows, and swaths of the original old-growth forest that once covered New York City.
Together, NYBG's collections are the foundation on which our design stories are built, infused with the colors, patterns, fragrances, and wonder of nature.
