Federation: The Central Address for our Jewish Community By Stewart Harris, Chair

As Federation Chair, I often speak about what we do as an organization and answer questions about the scope of our work. Most people know that we’re dedicated to raising funds to further the welfare of Jews locally, in Israel and in more than 60 countries around the world. That means everything from feeding people and rescuing them from harm’s way to helping them re-connect with their Jewish heritage or giving them a place to turn in the face of anti-Semitism. I always like to add that the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County is also the central address for this community. It’s a concept worth talking about. Because Federation is not affiliated with one particular stream of Judaism, it’s a place for all Jews to feel a sense of belonging and community. Whether you go to synagogue every week, just on the high holidays or you do not affiliate at all with a synagogue altogether, it doesn’t matter. Any of us can feel there is a connection through Federation, an umbrella organization that looks out for all Jews everywhere and speaks out for Jewish needs and concerns. I see it like a circle. We all contribute to take care of those who are less fortunate, and we are all tied together by this sense of responsibility, by Tzedakah. The giving — and our connection through giving — is what completes the circle. I’m proud to be part of a community and an organization where there are so many generous people who understand what it means to come together as one strong, unified family that is dedicated to improving the lives of others.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT DOTTI SEAMAN – A MOST SPECIAL GIFT Dedicated philanthropist, longtime Federation lay leader and current Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) Co-Chair, Dorothy P. “Dotti” Seaman of Boca Raton committed a gift of $1 million to the Federation that renames its department of Women’s Philanthropy in her honor in perpetuity. Now called the Dorothy Seaman Department of Women’s Philanthropy, this division of Federation’s Toby Weinman Palchik Center of Jewish Philanthropy (CJP) has been at the forefront of women’s giving, accounting for 49% of Federation’s Annual Campaign of more than $20 million and leading the nation with 208 Lion of Judah Endowments, which represent women who have established a minimum endowment of $100,000 to perpetuate their Lion gift to the Women’s Campaign of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Seaman, who has been involved with Federation’s Women’s Division since 1993 and served as its chair from 2003 to 2005, says the inspiration for her gift was simple: “I’m dedicated to Federation’s mission of furthering the welfare of Jews. I want to make sure that the children, who are our future, grow up to be caring, involved and dedicated to Jewish causes.” As Campaign Chair for the Women’s Division, Seaman had the opportunity to visit Eastern Europe and to take part in three overseas missions. “I met with the people who receive help and assistance through programs funded by Federation, and I was literally blown away,” she said. “To see the children’s schools and summer camps and the many people in need... changed my life. Those experiences can never be duplicated. Federation gave me a very clear meaning and purpose: to help others and to ensure Jewish continuity. And the close relationships I have made — the friendship that I enjoy with so many people through Federation — feel like family to me.” According to Jewish Federation of South Palm

Beach County President and CEO William S. Bernstein, “Dotti has created an incredible legacy in this community in terms of philanthropic giving and her commitment to Jewish needs.” Last year, Federation presented her with the coveted Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award, honoring her extraordinary service to the community through women’s philanthropy. Said Bernstein: “We are profoundly grateful for her active involvement and many years of dedicated lay leadership. She has left an indelible mark on the hearts of so many people here.” Bernstein also points out that this is the second million dollar donation from a woman in this community this year. “Toby Weinman Palchik’s million dollar gift helped us open the doors to Federation’s Center for Jewish Philanthropy in March. And now, to have another woman donor make a contribution at this level, within only six months, is unique for any community. It sets a new standard for women’s philanthropy and the incredible things it can accomplish.” Federation Director of Supplemental Philanthropy Anita Shalley, who has worked with Seaman for many years, says “Dotti is a true role model and has been instrumental in solidifying women’s philanthropy in South Palm Beach County. “When Dotti learned of our need to grow our Lion of Judah Endowment program, she immediately stepped up to the plate and made arrangements to fully fund her gift,” reports Shalley. Seaman was also the first to make a major gift to the Jewish Day School Scholarship Endowment through the Community Foundation, and she established the Seaman Family Scholarship Fund for the Jewish Education Commission to benefit the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School. Shalley says Seaman honored the legacy of her beloved late husband Larry by endowing his annual gift created a $100,000 memorial fund in his name that will support the cultural arts

program at the Jewish Association of Residential Care (JARC), one of Federation’s four primary beneficiary agencies. To Federation Campaign Chair Ellen R. Sarnoff, “Dotti is a genuine friend and true mentor.” Sarnoff proudly holds up a book given to her by Seaman, titled Friends to the End; The True Value of Friendship. She opens to a quote that says ‘genuine friendship is founded on a shared vision.’ “That is absolutely the truth with Dotti,” says Sarnoff. “Dotti has made my life better in every way. She is always calm, always patient, and she always invigorates and inspires me. We are so lucky to have her in this community, and I am so fortunate to have her as a friend and a role model.” Seaman said her “big hope” is that her gift may inspire other women to give as well. “The women in this community are true leaders,” she said. “They are empowered, they are involved and they have the money. They’ve already made a huge impact, and I expect them to step up to the plate and even surpass men in their giving levels.”

“My philosophy is if you have it, share it. Do something meaningful with it. I have received so much by giving, more than I can ever express.” – Dotti Seaman 3

Major Gifts

FEDERATION ANNOUNCES NEW THEME, CHAIRS FOR MAJOR GIFTS EVENT

To kick off its season of giving, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County is rolling out the red carpet, literally, for its Major Gifts event. Themed “Grandeur of Giving,” the Federation is pulling out the stops for one grand and meaningful evening for all of its Major Donors. The Ball will take place on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., December 18, at the Great Hall of the Boca Raton Resort & Club. All proceeds benefit the UJA/ Federation 2008 Annual Campaign which supports critical programs and services for thousands of Jews locally and around the world. Past Vice Chair of Campaign Steve Bedowitz says Federation’s Major Gifts Donors (those who give at least $10,000 per year) account for nearly half of the money raised for the campaign every year. “This year, for example, the 423 donors who make up our Major Gifts category have contributed more than $10.5 million dollars to our Annual Campaign,” says Bedowitz. “This enables us to do so much for Jewish needs right here in our community, in Israel and in 60 countries worldwide. Our annual Major Gifts event is a big thank you, a way to honor those who continue to give so much, and a way to inform our major donors of the needs in the upcoming campaign year.” Judy Levis Markhoff and her husband, Paul Markhoff, will serve as The Major Gifts Event Chairs. Levis Markhoff, Federation’s largest female contributor to the UJA/Federation Annual Campaign and the immediate past chair of the overwhelmingly successful “Dancing with the Stars” Main Event last February, says she’s excited to do something really different with this year’s season opener for Federation’s major donors. “Being part of Federation’s Major Gifts category reflects one’s deep sense of responsibility and connection to all of humanity. So, I thought it would be special to have one magnificent evening that brings together all of the Federation’s major contributors. Can you imagine how powerful this will be? And, I kept thinking ‘old world, new Federation,’ combining an old world renaissance theme with a new season of giving for the Federation. ‘Old and new’ is also a bridge between our longtime philanthropists and the donors who are coming to the Major Gifts event for the first time,” explained Levis Markhoff. “So far, everyone is excited about the theme, including some of our younger contributors who want to be more involved,” she says. Levis Markhoff and her husband Paul additionally oversee the “Prime

eXcitement BUilding For maJor giFts: KeYnote speaKer mariane pearl and celeBration oF siX Valiant soldiers From israel deFense Forces Mariane Pearl will be te keynote speaker for the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Major Gifts event “Grandeur of Giving” this December, it’s largest and most important fundraiser of the year. Mariane Pearl stepped into the world spotlight in January 2002, when her husband, The Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, was kidnapped by a militant Islamic fundamentalist group in Pakistan. For nine days, the world watched spell-bound as Mariane, then five months pregnant, calmly and articulately appealed for her husband’s release. Then, on February 1, Daniel Pearl, who was called “the American Jew” by his captors, was beheaded, triggering worldwide outrage. His last words on a video circulated by the militant group were, “My father is Jewish. My mother is Jewish. I am Jewish.” Mariane told CNN after Daniel’s murder that “his pain and my pain will help change the world.” She said she was “determined not to be broken,” and wrote the book A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Daniel, which was also released as a film this year, staring Angelina Jolie.

Major Gifts Event Chairs Judy Levis Markhoff and her husband Paul say they are thrilled that Mariane accepted Federation’s invitation to be the keynote speaker for this important event. “Everything I know about her inspires me,” says Levis Markhoff. “Her compassion, courage and strength are a unique example for all of us.” Paul Markhoff said that when he and Judy saw the movie A Mighty Heart, they were both profoundly moved by Mariane’s story and her refusal to give in to prejudice. “She has a captivating story to share,” says Markhoff.“ Special guests will also include six soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces, including: a fighter pilot who participated in last summer’s second Lebanon war; a female field intelligence officer who commands a women’s battalion in the West Bank; and a combat doctor who has served extensively in the Gaza Strip. Federation’s Major Gifts event “Grandeur of Giving” will take place on Tuesday evening, December 18 at 5:30 p.m at the Boca Raton Resort and Club. IRA BILL GIVES DONORS MAJOR TAX ADVANTAGE For the second year in a row, qualified individuals can use their IRAs to achieve their philanthropic goals with the Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County with no adverse tax consequences. Under the Pension Protection Act, individuals 70½ or older, for a limited time, can instruct the trustee of their IRA to make a direct distribution of up to $100,000 per year to the Foundation. The gift counts toward the individual’s annual IRA distribution requirement. This charitable IRA rollover opportunity is only available for gifts made by December 31, 2007. Unlike a cash withdrawal from an IRA, an individual’s direct contribution will not be taxed as income. The gift will not be eligible for a charitable tax deduction, but it will not count toward the annual percentage limitation of a donor’s other deductible gifts. The direct contribution cannot be made to donor advised funds, supporting organizations, charitable remainder trusts or in exchange for gift annuities. Donors are encouraged to earmark their gifts to:

6

• the Federation/UJA Annual Campaign • the creation of a permanent endowment fund to perpetuate your annual gift through a women’s Lion of Judah Endowment Fund (LOJE) or the Forever Fund. Funds can also be used to make up the difference for annual campaign endowments that are underfunded. • the creation of permanent endowment funds for Federation’s partner agencies for a specific field of interest through the Jewish Community Foundation. • to create a perpetual endowment for your favorite charity through the Jewish Community Foundation. Financial advisors are also encouraged to inform their clients of the new legislation and giving opportunities. The Federation’s prestigious Mitzvah Society recognizes professionals who have referred clients to the Jewish Community Foundation, resulting in a closed gift. Mitzvah Society members are recognized annually at a special cocktail reception. For further information, contact the Jewish Community Foundation at 561-852-3157.

Women’s Philanthropy dorothy seaman department of

POISED FOR a new campaign season As the face of philanthropy changes, so is the way that people choose to express their philanthropy. The Dorothy Seaman Department of Women’s Philanthropy offers women a variety of ways to be involved in the Jewish community, including but not limited to our annual campaign events, endowments, Metro Women and Jewish Women’s Foundation. Our department is one of the first-ever in the country to integrate all aspects of women’s philanthropy under one roof. Because women’s philanthropy is a driving force in this community — accounting for nearly 50% of the annual campaign — we have a real opportunity to flex our philanthropic power and make a difference in the lives of Jews living here in South Palm Beach County, in Israel and in more than 60 countries around the world. Share in our success! We’re proud to report these stunning accomplishments from our 2007

Campaign Year (statistics from 8/30/06 through 8/30/07):

• Over 5,100 women contributed over $9.6

million to the 2007 annual campaign (the overall campaign raised over $20.2 million)

• We have 873 Lions in our community

(women making annual gifts at the $5,000 level and above), making us number 2 in the nation, second only to New York!

• Seventeen women committed to becoming

Lions forever this year by establishing a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) fund — bringing our total number of LOJE to 205. This represents commitments of over $26.5 million in current gifts and future expectancies.

• South Palm Beach County leads the way

with the largest number of women who have established Lion of Judah Endowments

(LOJE) nationally.

• 2,900 women in the U.S. have endowed

their Lion-level gifts at a minimum of $100,000. This perpetuates nearly $440 million to Jewish federations across the country. Lions grew to more than 16,000 strong nationwide.

• Over 400 women came together to hear our sisters from Israel speak at the Dottie Lipson Educational Journey, our department’s premiere community wide-educational outreach event.

• The Jewish Women’s Foundation has grown to 59 Trustees with nearly $370,000 in assets and $590,000 in total commitments. Over $40,000 has been distributed to fund programs that work to empower Jewish women and girls.

For just $1 a day, $365 per year, over 400 women of diverse ages and backgrounds take the next step to support the Jewish community and making the world a better place. We encourage you to attend this special community-wide luncheon and enjoy the inspirational words of award-winning actress Camryn Manheim on March 4, 2008. lion of Judah

The Lion of Judah program recognizes women who make generous individual gifts at the

$5,000 level and above to the Annual Campaign. Those who contribute at this level attend such exclusive events as the annual Lion of Judah luncheon and the International Lion of Judah Conference, and are also encouraged to wear their Lion of Judah pin with pride. Glorious and stunning, the Lion of Judah pin represents sisterhood and connectedness, leadership and power. It provides a benchmark for women to continue to advance into new spheres of giving as they achieve greater economic success. And, it allows women to take active roles in securing their Jewish future and forging new opportunities for creative philanthropy. When you become a Lion, you have a unique opportunity to influence the global agenda with the Jewish values of compassion and loving kindness. Join the South Palm Beach County’s pride of Lions at our luncheon featuring Brigitte Gabriel on January 24, 2008 at The Ritz. lion of Judah endowment (loJe)

The Lion in you can roar far into the future through the Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE). This esteemed program recognizes those women who have established a minimum endowment of $100,000 to perpetuate their Lion gift to the women’s campaign of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Those who make the commitment to be a “Lion forever,” receive a “flame” that is added to the Lion’s paw on their pins. This extraordinary

group of women is invited to celebrate their new level of philanthropy at our annual Lion of Judah Endowment Ultimate Thank You. This year’s special event will take place on March 5, 2008 aboard the luxurious Holland America’s Premier Ship the M.S. Maasdam. metro women

Metro Stop:

SWANK DEFINED. METRO DIVISION ROLLS OUT RED CARPET FOR ‘SIGNATURE EVENT – A NIGHT OF OLD HOLLYWOOD’ The dress code is ‘Hollywood chic.’ And pretty much everything else about this star-studded evening follows suit: Smartly dressed valets at the ready. The big lit-up marquee. The red carpet. The paparazzi. Low lights and cool sophistication. Even Marilyn and Brando will be sauntering about striking a pose for photo opps. In fact, on Saturday night, November 3, a Boca Raton venue will be so completely transformed into a swank old Hollywood dinner club that guests will wonder what coast they are actually on; and what decade they’ve suddenly stepped into. It’s the Metro Signature Event of the year, the official kick off to the UJA/Federation 2008 Annual Campaign— and the one evening in which each of Federation’s Metro Divisions (Women’s, Community and Business) join to dance, toast and celebrate a new season of giving. Metro Signature Event Chairs are: Talia & Hal Klein, Wendy & Elliot Koolik, Ollie & Jonathan Louis, Jill & Ted Deutch and Debra & Larry

Halperin. Couvert is $95 with a $365 minimum family contribution to the 2008 Campaign. Event Chair and Metro Board Co-chair Jill Deutch said, “We wanted to capitalize on the Metro Division’s growing appeal to Jewish members of the community in their 30s, 40s and 50s by hosting an event that no one will ever forget. Planning literally began in April, and once we announced the Old Hollywood theme, everyone wanted to participate. Have a great time for a great cause, what could be better?” In addition to the high style ambience, professional dance-floor lighting and non-stop music, guests will enjoy premium cocktails and gourmet hors d’oeuvres for much of the night.

This special evening is graciously made possible by Metro Division Sponsors Sandelman Foundation and Regions Bank. Metro Signature Event sponsors are The Boca Observer and MThree production company.

Event Chair Wendy Koolik said that “even the raffle prizes will all be true to the Hollywood theme: a five-star fashion make-over; a dazzling necklace from acclaimed designer Jennifer Zeuner; and some big surprises. No stone will be left unturned,” she promises.

For more information or to reserve your place at the Metro Signature Event: A Night of Old Hollywood, call Lenore Waldman at (561) 8523155 or email lenorew@bocafed.org You may also reserve online at jewishboca.org/signatureevent.

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception and hors d’ouevres, and a full hour of networking with other businesspeople,

The couvert is $36 per person. Metro Business Chair Eric Altschul will act as moderator, directing a wide-range of questions and opening up the discussion for audience input. to life. The Hebrew word for Life is the word Chai composed of two Hebrew letters which have a numerical value of 18, thereby making it one of the very special Jewish numbers. The letters are Het and Yud, the eighth and tenth letters of the Hebrew alphabet respectively. The most popular Jewish phrase using the word is “l’chaim” when drinking a glass of wine or spirits toasting “to life!” Through all of the travails of the Hebrew-speaking world of Jews, the phrase “Am Yisrael Chai,” has become among the most popular, meaning: “The people of Israel live!”

Israel mission RAFFLE WINNER ANNOUNCED, EXCITMENT BUILDS FOR FEDERATION’S COMMUNITY-WIDE MISSION CELEBRATING ISRAEL’S 60th BIRTHDAY When Jeff Hilowitz of Boca Raton got the phone call from the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County telling him that he and his wife won roundtrip airfare to Israel to attend Federation’s community-wide mission next November, he said they literally started “jumping for joy.” “The last thing I thought when I filled out the raffle form was that I’d actually win. We have never won anything. And to go to Israel, for us, that’s very special,” he said. Hilowitz was one of more than a thousand local residents who completed a raffle ticket at Israel Under the Stars, the annual celebration of Israel Independence Day held by the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), Federation’s public policy arm, at Mizner Park last April. They will join at least 200 other South Palm Beach County residents for what is shaping up to be Federation’s largest mission in 17 years. Set for November 15-23, 2008, Federation’s Israel @ 60 Mission will take place during a time of excitement and celebration as thousands of Jews from around the world gathered for the United Jewish Communities (UJC) General Assembly. Featuring five itineraries tailored to different interests, this mission promises to have something for everyone. Tracks include: ‘First timers;’ ‘Business and Technology;’ ‘Arts and Culture;’ ‘Adventure Seekers;’ and a special ‘General Assembly’ track for those interested in attending the UJC’s business meetings. Robert and Pamela Weinroth of Boca Raton, signed up for the Mission as soon as they found out about it. “Even though it’s a year away, we’re already getting excited,” said Robert. “Our first trip to Israel was with the Federation, and it was the perfect way to go. We saw an oasis of high technology and a westernized so-

ciety of hard working people, with a deep sense of pride in their Jewish state,” he said. “We also saw breathtaking beauty. We have since gone back twice, and each time we feel like we’ve come home. There is such a sense of being with family. We have never felt so safe as we do when we are walking around Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or other cities in Israel. We are eagerly looking forward to another jam packed itinerary. Pamela has signed up for the Adventure seekers Track while I am going to be more interested in the business and political presentations,” explained Weinroth. Hilowitz says Israel has a very special place in his heart because his father, who is a Holocaust survivor, also served in the Israeli military in 1948 during the War of Independence. “My dad says the very proudest moment in his whole life was when Ben Gurion saluted his squadron after their victory. And I remember when Ariel Sharon was asked who his greatest heroes were. Sharon replied that it was all of

the Holocaust survivors who fought in the ‘48 War, because they came to fight for Israel even though they had nothing left. When I was in Israel 11 years ago, I felt that tremendous pride reflecting on my father’s experiences. There is nothing like it.” Federation’s Israel @ 60 Mission is limited to 200 community members, with reservations made on a first-come, first-served basis. The first 60 people who confirm their reservation with a deposit, will receive a $200 discount off the total cost of the trip. From November 15-23, 2008, Federation’s “Israel @ 60” mission will unite the South Palm Beach community in support and celebration of the State of Israel. Mission Co-Chair Dale Filhaber lauded the sponsors, “We could not be more proud to have these two leading area businesses on board. They clearly understand that visiting Israel is a major statement of solidarity and foresee the wonderful impact this mission will also have on our own community. The excitement just keeps building with the addition of their support and their vision.”

relatives in Israel, I know personally the great significance of this Mission.” Lewin continued, “This also builds on our inaugural sponsorship of Federation’s Metro Business last year.” Kluger Peretz Kaplan & Berlin had already agreed to sponsor Federation’s Metro Business for the second year in 2007-2008 before it learned of the opportunity to sponsor the “Israel@60” mission, and signed on for the additional commitment. Stuart Silver, a partner in the Firm, explained that the firm’s gift emerged from a “strong desire to support a milestone event for this community. His enthusiasm is shared by others at Kluger Peretz Kaplan & Berlin, including Michael Chesal, Eleni Pantaridis and Brad Shraiberg, all of whom attended the first recruiting meeting for the Mission. “There are already seven to eight of us who hope to participate on the Mission,” Silver said.

Gerald Lewin, Goldstein Lewin co-founder and co-managing partner, shared, “This is both a significant time to celebrate Israel, as well as a time of great concern. We wanted to do something very special for the people of Israel as well as for our community. Having lived in Israel as a child after leaving Lithuania, and with many

Jewish Community Relations Council

ELECTED OFFICIALS’ STAFF EXPLORE FEDERATION AND ITS BENEFICIARY AGENCIES Staff from federal, state and local elected officials’ offices recently spent an activity-packed morning touring the 83-acre West Boca Raton campus of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, where they learned about vital services offered by Federations’ beneficiary agencies. In all, 16 staff members attended from the offices of: Congressmen Ron Klein and Robert Wexler; State Senators Dave Aronberg, Jeff Atwater, and Ted Deutch; State Representatives Ellyn Bogdanoff, Susan Bucher, Richard Machek, Maria Sachs and Kelly Skidmore; County Commissioner Burt Aaronson and Tax Collector Anne Gannon. They were shown how our wide array of human services addresses many of their constituents’ needs — and how many critical community needs go unmet and require additional resources. The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), the public affairs voice of the Federation, organized the event. The visitors were welcomed by Steve Mendelsohn, JCRC Chair and Bill Bernstein, Federation President and CEO. “We are most fortunate to be represented by so many talented, caring and committed leaders,” said Bernstein. “We cannot thank you enough for everything you do as our liaison to your offices, helping people in need and drawing resources to our community – including significant funds for the Federation and agencies to help meet those needs.” This year, state allocations include transportation and case management for seniors and the disabled; Holocaust survivor assistance; and a pending grant toward development of Ruth Rales’ Senior Center in Delray Beach. Referring to Federation’s comprehensive 2005 Jewish Demographic Study, Dick Jacobs, Federation Vice President of Community Planning said, “Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Highland

Beach form a Jewish community like no other: 49 percent of all households have Jewish residents. The Jewish population has increased from 1,000 in 1970 to 131,000 today.” He also explained that this area has the highest median age, at 71, of any U.S. Jewish community; Miami’s is only 51. Forty percent of this Jewish community is 75 or older; ten years ago this number was 29 percent. Many are here without family, and an increasing number live below the poverty line.”

support but do not need 24-hour supervision proudly welcomed small groups to their light and spacious two-bedroom apartments.

Jacobs explained, “Many Holocaust survivors need particular care. Meanwhile, the population of Jewish children has doubled in the last decade. The needs are extensive and growing,” he concluded.

The Mental Health Players, who dramatize serious issues in their outreach programming, offered a live-action example by portraying legislative staff fielding a call from an elderly woman with multiple needs, and facilitating follow-up discussion. “They really nailed our role and how we feel handling such difficult situations,” said Stephanie Kunkel of State Rep. Kelly Skidmore’s office. Aaron Nevins of State Rep. Ellyn Bogdanoff’s office added quickly, “While we wouldn’t do constituents’ hurricane shopping for them, we do try to help everyone.”

The bus and walking tour began at Jewish Association for Residential Care (JARC), which provides group homes, apartments, vocational training and placement, and activities for adults with developmental disabilities. Karen Tamoney, JARC Living and Learning Director, thanked the visitors for their offices’ efforts to obtain funding and help JARC become a state-supported employment service provider. Visitors toured areas where clients were engaged in culinary training, environmental services, mail fulfillment, and computer training. At the Adolph and Rose Levis Apartment Complex, residents who benefit from

Dr. Jaclynn Faffer, Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service (RRJFS) Executive Director, explained that their agency’s “services are difficult to show because most of them are behind closed doors— and difficult to tell because listeners tend to tune out painful situations and difficult cases.”

Ruth Rales’ staff outlined their many affordable services for all ages and backgrounds, provided throughout the community. They have a wide sliding fee scale, and accept many insurance plans. Programs include psychotherapy; free support groups, a drop in center for those with

severe mental illnesses; elderly and disabled case management and other services; a food pantry; extensive outreach programming; violence prevention in schools; mentoring opportunities and more for 400 volunteers; and storm disaster preparation and relief, particularly for the elderly and disabled. They are also preparing to build a comprehensive senior center in Delray Beach. After a working brunch, the visitors returned to touring. Elise Dolgow, JCRC Director, described campus features, including two HUD-subsidized housing facilities, the Holocaust Pavilion, the schools, and cultural buildings. Mary Anne Dalton, Assistant Vice President, Federation Transportation Services, Inc., thanked the state legislative offices for the dollars that enable 17 buses and 14 passenger vans to make approximately 7,500 one-way trips per month for seniors and the disabled, in the Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Highland Beach area. The vehicles, however, are aging and in need of replacement.

The tour finished at the Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center’s (JCC) Phyllis and Harvey Sandler Center for Jewish Life Enhancement and the Adolph & Rose Levis Alzheimer and Day Care Center, which share a 25,000 square foot building. Sally Oken, JCC Associate Executive Director, gave an overview of the array of programming, primarily for seniors – including those who live in the campus’ HUD housing, and caregivers who drop off loved ones off next door. Lynne Weinstein, Adult Day Services Director, said, “The Levis Center enables adults of all ages with Alzheimer’s disease or other impairments to remain in their homes. Our unique, non-institutional setting has two levels of care to better address our clients’ needs and abilities. As a subcontractor for the Long Term Care Diversion Medicaid Waiver, we are able to provide our nonsectarian care to people from throughout the community. However, our area’s need far outstrips available government resources.”

National Security and the Threat of A Nuclear Iran Opens JCRC’s ‘Stop Iran Initiative’ NOV 15 “National Security and the Threat of a Nuclear Iran,” a community-wide evening program, will inaugurate the new “STOP Iran Initiative” launched by the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. R. James Woolsey, former CIA Director and Co-Chair of the Committee on Present Danger, and Ofer Bavly, the new Consul General of Israel – Miami, will provide this special briefing on Thursday, November 15, from 6 to 7:30 pm in Zinman Hall on the Federation’s West Boca Raton campus. The JCRC invites the entire community to this event on a topic of critical concern to all. There is no admission charge. “This event marks the beginning of our STOP Iran Initiative. Americans must understand that Iran is close to developing nuclear weapons, and has an established record of supporting terrorism and abusing human rights. This situation poses a grave threat to global security,” said Steve Mendelsohn, JCRC Chair. “Like other JCRC’s throughout the U.S., we are making sure the

As the government staff were leaving, Wendi Lipsich, longtime District Director for Congressman Robert Wexler, summed up the morning for them, “You can see why the Federation and agencies are the first places I call. They offer a multitude of services in one stop for people of all backgrounds, they do it so well, and they never say no. This great resource makes our jobs easier, and they could do so much more with our help.” The Elected Officials’ Staff Briefing and Tour is part of the JCRC’s ongoing work with government officials. Other activities include the annual Legislative Send-Off and Wrap-Up, personal tours and meetings with officials, and mobilizing grassroots advocacy. For more information about the Jewish Community Relations Council’s government advocacy, contact Director Elise Dolgow at (561) 852-6080 or elised@bocafed.org.

threat of a nuclear Iran is on the front burner in our community,” he added. “The JCRC will be engaging diverse community partners in concerted efforts to raise awareness and unite our community to advocate for a safer world,” said Eric Matheson, STOP Iran Chair. “There is a growing clear consensus that a nuclear Iran poses a threat to much of the free world, not just to Israel, to which Iran poses the most immediate and direct threat. Therefore, we are seeking out other groups and organizations to share resources and provide forums for our local communities, to do whatever we can to support our local, state and government officials and deter Iran from continuing on its current course,” he continued.

Alan Bergstein, Stacey Schacht, Rabbi Simcha Freedman, and President & CEO Bill Bernstein (not pictured) attended the September 24 rally in New York City protesting Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s address to U.N.

Following the keynote speakers’ remarks, an interactive dialogue will be facilitated by Andrew L. Rosenkranz, Florida Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League. For additional information on the event, to request resources, or to learn how your organization can participate in the “STOP Iran Initiative,” call the JCRC Office at 561-852-6080 or email staceys@bocafed.org.

FEDERATION BRINGS ISRAELI TEENS TO JCC MACCABI ARTSFEST IN BOCA RATON

Scanning the lunch tables through the buzz of animated conversations and Israeli music, it was impossible to tell which 12 of the 109 Jewish teens participating in the second annual JCC Maccabi ArtsFest were from Israel. Halfway through their week of learning, performing, and exhibiting together, in Florida Atlantic University’s Grand Palm Room in Boca Raton, the Israeli youth were completely comingled with their counterparts from South Palm Beach County, throughout the U.S., and South America. “At first, it was easy to tell the Israeli teens apart, because they clung together,” noted ArtsFest Chair Stephanie Owitz Greenberg, “but now we’re looking through every cluster to gather them to lead the after-lunch activities. With their help, we’ve infused this week with Israeli culture.” “I was shy at first,” Yuval Dotan, a 14-yearold musician, concurred, “but the American kids really reached out to us, and the activities helped us get to know new people. Then it was too much fun and too interesting not to be with them!” Yuval was one of ten Israeli teens able to participate in ArtsFest through the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Partnership 2000 (P2K) initiative. Now in its fifth year of exchanges involving students and educators, law enforcement and security officers, business leaders, government officials, and others, the program was formed to strengthen bonds between our local community and its Israeli “sister city,” Kiryat Bialik, a suburb of Haifa. The teens’ journey began a year ago. Federation’s Israel and Overseas (IOC) Director Elise Dolgow explained, “When our P2K Committee learned that the 2007 JCC Maccabi ArtsFest would take place right on the Federation campus, we jumped on the opportunity. We knew that bringing teens here from Kiryat Bialik would be a wonderful gift to both our communities.” In addition, two Israeli teens originally from

26

Ethiopia were able to participate in ArtsFest through the generosity of Adolph & Rose Levis JCC President Maurice Plough, Jr., and his wife Margie, via the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry (NACOEJ). Built on the successful model of the JCC Maccabi Games ®, which have grown to draw thousands of Jewish teens from around the world each summer for sports competition, the ArtsFest mission is “to inspire Jewish teens (entering grades 8-12) through a dynamic combination of workshop, performance, exhibition, community service, social activities, and fun to develop their individuality through the medium of artistic expression while strengthening their bonds to their Jewish heritage, community, and Israel.” Along with other out-of-town ArtsFest participants, the Israeli teens were placed with local host families, – whose welcome provided another source of amazement.

JCC Maccabi ArtsFest teens and delegation leaders Carmit Gilad and Talit Sukenik from Israel strike an artful pose.

ArtsFest Israel delegation members Ester Araro from Yavneh, Yuval Donat and Gali Yechiam from Kiryat Bialik.

But forging personal relationships with other teens across barriers of language and geography seemed the most outstanding feature of the Israeli youths’ experience. “For arts, you don’t need language to communicate,” discovered Gali. Crossing 6,500 miles, these relationships fulfill some of ArtsFest Chair Stephanie Owitz Greenberg’s greatest hopes for the week. “It’s the beginning of a lifetime of connections and relationships, from email pen pals to cultural and business collaborations and support of our homeland.” Local teens can build these bonds through the Jewish Roots Initiative P2K project. This joint venture of the Jewish Education Commission with Donna Klein Jewish Academy and Weinbaum Yeshiva High School involves 40 teens from these and other area public and private high schools. Teens engage on varied levels, from local discussion groups and activities to “Gesher Chai,” a living bridge in which students from South Palm Beach County and Kiryat Bialik live

ONE MISSION. 3,600 MORE DREAMS. During this summer’s 2008 Mission to Ethiopia and Israel, Dorothy Meyers Wizer, Federation’s Vice Chair Campaign, along with Senior Vice President of Financial Resource Development Jason Shames and Vice President of Campaign and Community Development Marla Weiss Egers, traveled to see first-hand how donations from local residents are being used to help 3,600 Ethiopian-Jews prepare to relocate to Israel. About 110,000 Ethiopians have

already made the transition over the last 20 years, through the help of the JDC and funding from Federations across the country. Shames, says “It was like going to a place where time stopped. There was no running water, no toilets, no electricity. We showed up in a village where kids don’t have shoes— and where no one has used a toothbrush before. It was the opposite of life in Boca Raton.”

Below is a gallery of memorable images from the trip.
