Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County

IMPACT TODAY. IMAGINE TOMORROW.

Welcome to Chai Life This publication is produced by the Marketing & Communications Department of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. PUBLISHED FALL, WINTER & SPRING

IMPACT TODAY. IMAGINE TOMORROW. THE TIME IS NOW. We are at a unique moment in time in the history of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Federation has just completed its third year of growth with more than 600 new donors joining our ranks and an unprecedented number of past supporters reinvesting in the organization. Beyond the numbers, our leadership rolls are burgeoning with participants of all ages and our community partnerships continue to expand – since 2012, funded agencies have increased from 32 to more than 50, including eight local synagogues. With our Jewish family growing and community table expanding, there is a strong feeling of optimism about the future. But, as always, many challenges lay ahead. Locally, we have one of the largest senior populations in the country with the demands for hot meals, home care services and transportation at an all-time high. Israel needs our help more than ever in dealing with the lingering effects of war and the ever-present social challenges associated with a rapidly growing society. And our Jewish family in the Ukraine continues to suffer from a war that cast an even darker shadow on an already poverty-stricken region as another cold winter approaches. While we have one of the largest and most densely populated Jewish communities in the country, we are also facing demographic changes that call for a new generation of donors to emerge and establish their presence. The time is now for them to answer the call. If you have been supporting Federation with your resources, time and expertise, we ask that you increase your investment – not just in our Annual Campaign to take care of the pressing needs of today, but also in our Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation to secure your dreams for tomorrow with a planned gift or endowment. If you have not been involved, there are more ways than ever to engage – a long list of exciting events and programs for all ages and stages, our various affinity groups including our new Men’s Division, volunteerism and leadership opportunities, missions, advocacy and more. The best place to start is a tour of our incredible Jewish campus – the largest of its kind in the U.S. at 100 acres. However you decide to get involved, we hope that you will be inspired by our mission to care for those in need and build our Jewish community… and ultimately help us Impact Today and Imagine Tomorrow.

DIGNITY Born with intellectual disabilities, Tom Tessmer, 77, was fortunate to have parents who cared for him most of his life. In fact, his father, a star quarterback in Michigan, gave up a promising career in sports to be more available for his son. When his parents passed away, Tom was left in the guardianship of his aunt and then her husband, who ultimately placed Tom at the newly opened Barry Clayman House, now part of the Jewish Association for Residential Care (JARC). That was 1987 and Tom was one of JARC’s very first residents.

Tom’s inheritance funds did not come through as planned so, for the most part, the expenses of his full-time care have been absorbed for more than two decades by JARC, a beneficiary agency of our Federation. JARC Executive Director Dr. Debra Hallow says that, like Tom, more than one-third of JARC residents no longer have a family of origin. She says the other residents and staff become their family. In Tom’s case, he has a close circle of friends. He loves to talk about sports. He has a job on the environmental services team and participates in activities, including the Exceptional Theater Group. In fact, Tom recently thrilled the staff by getting down on one knee to belt out a rendition of Al Jolson’s “Mammy”— quite a surprise for this low-key guy. Through our community’s compassion and generosity, Tom is happy, active and well cared for. Our Jewish family ensures that he does not stand alone in the world.

SOLIDARITY Daniel Fogel, a local boy, spent this past July fighting Hamas in Gaza. Deeply affected by his Jewish education and leadership experiences as a Boca Raton teen, he headed to Israel for a year after graduating from Spanish River High School. “Doni” was part of Nativ, a life-changing program that brings young adults to study and volunteer in Israel - and is now supported by Federation through MASA. After college, Doni returned to Israel to join the Israeli Defense Forces, receiving two citations for bravery. With no immediate family there, Doni served as a Lone Soldier, part of an important Federation-supported program that places IDF volunteers from other countries with host families in Israel. “The Lone Solider program connected me with a family on a kibbutz,” Doni says. “When I got off base, the food was made, the laundry was taken care of, and my kibbutz siblings were eager to play games with me. I had my own room in a real home where I could rest and recharge before heading back.” Now 31 and an IDF reservist, Doni continues to live in Israel, with his wife Tamir. “Fighting in Gaza was difficult,” he reflects, “but the love and support of my family and my hometown community in Boca Raton reinforced the need to persevere and ensure - to the extent I could - the safe future of the State for which I was fighting.” CHAILIFE 8

UNDERSTANDING Imagine a classroom of public school students learning about the horrors of the Holocaust for the very first time. Fortunately, they are learning through a thoughtful and sensitive curriculum prepared under the leadership of the Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education at FAU (CHHRE). Established in 1996 by the Florida Department of Education, the Center supports the implementation of the state’s mandate for Holocaust education; it was partially funded by the State but now must rely entirely on contributions from private individuals and organizations like our Federation. Dr. Rose Gatens, Director of the Center, explains, “Through these studies, public school students come to understand and recognize human behaviors that are related to prejudice, hatred and genocide. They engage in open discussions about the differences that divide people, and they learn to celebrate diversity instead of fearing it.”

A NEW YEAR OF BUILDING LEADERS AND COMMUNITY Only last season, Federation launched the Jewish Community Leadership Institute (JCLI) with the goals of preparing leaders to excel in their positions and to foster collaboration and partnership among our local Jewish organizations. JCLI’s first class of 22 Emerging Leaders from our Federation and community partner organizations have begun their second year of learning and growing together. Their new season began in September with “StorytellingEffective Communication for Impactful Leadership” with Rae Ringel, a certified executive coach and former UJA Director of Professional and Volunteer Development. “Core Values for Jewish Leaders” in October featured a panel of some of our own community rabbis. Rabbi Efrem Goldberg of Boca Raton Synagogue, Rabbi David Englander of B’nai Torah Congregation, Rabbi Dan Levin of Temple Beth El and Rabbi Robert Silvers of Congregation B’nai Israel spoke in a powerful program moderated by Rabbi Josh Broide, now the Federation’s Director of Community Engagement. Chaired by Thomas O. Katz and Carol Smokler, JCLI is building on the great success of its first year. Once again, JCLI will make experts available in professional development programming for Federation and agency staff. And a class of newly engaged leaders from the Jewish community will begin soon.

Voices Community

In the first edition of this new Chai Life feature, heads of our four local Jewish Day Schools, all Federation beneficiary agencies, responded to one question. The remarkable contributions of these educational leaders and their schools to their students, our Jewish community and far beyond are unmistakable.

of our

Helena Levine, MSW Incoming Head of School Donna Klein Jewish Academy As I enter my tenth year at Donna Klein Jewish Academy, with the incredible support of our Board of Trustees, current Head of School Karen Feller, administration, faculty and families, I look forward to embarking on my new journey as Head of School beginning January 2015. My personal mission comes from Exodus 19:6, "To educate generations of Jewish leaders towards being a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." I am proud and honored to be part of an institution whose mission and vision have a clear purpose rooted in our tradition. As a K-12 school that aims to always keep the end in mind, we create a program where "A graduating senior... is a knowledgeable and responsible citizen of the world, committed to Jewish values and lifelong learning." Our goal is to inspire our students to become the best they can be academically, spiritually, emotionally and socially. We strive to create an environment where students are encouraged to develop a genuine thirst for learning and a desire to make a difference in the world, thereby securing a strong future for the Jewish community as well as the world at large. As future Head of School at one of the most recognized Jewish Day Schools in the world, I am humbled and honored to continue a legacy of creating the Jewish leaders of tomorrow.

Rabbi Adam Englander Head of School Hillel Day School of Boca Raton The very existence of Hillel Day School is predicated upon our mission to secure and enhance the Jewish future. Without that commitment, we may as well close up shop. Over the course of their years in our school, we hope that our children, first and foremost, gain an appreciation for the notion of “Lilmod al menat l’assot” - that their Torah learning is designed to lead to action. G-d has an overarching mission for every Jew and that is to act in accordance with Torah/Jewish values so that meaningful impact can occur. Living this type of life is, by definition, designed to make the world a better place. Our students must understand that this mission is part of their spiritual DNA, handed down to them from their ancestors Abraham and Sarah. Connected to this goal is our desire to ensure that each student understands the reality of “Areyvut” - that each Jew is responsible for one another. This goes way beyond altruism and acts of kindness. It’s a deeply rooted belief that if a fellow Jew is lacking in any way, so am I. We are like one interconnected body. If our foot suffers a significant injury, we will appreciate the negative impact on the rest of the body. So it is with the rest of our people, and in reality, all of mankind. Curriculum, projects and programs are designed in such a way that children learn about and act upon these ideals from a very young age. I am very optimistic about the Jewish future!

What would you like your students to have gained during their education at your school, to secure and enhance the Jewish future?

Rabbi Reuven Feinberg Dean Torah Academy of Boca Raton Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karlitz, one of the greatest sages of the last century, popularly known by the name of his magum opus, “Chazon Ish,” once compared every Jewish child to an uncut diamond. “It is the responsibility,” he said, “of every Jewish educator to be a diamond cutter, to bring out the brilliance, beauty, sparkle and dazzling potential of every Jewish child.” At Torah Academy, it is our mission to develop the awareness deep within every child that they are indeed a precious diamond, with the majestic makeup for greatness that lies within them, waiting to be tapped. We teach our students to recognize the nobility and grandeur inherent in every human being and the obligation that one has to live up to their greatest personal potential. I think of the world of tomorrow and how challenging it will be for the next generation, yet I am still optimistic about our future. When I see the sparkle in the eyes of our students, I am confident that they are not only learning how to meaningfully practice their heritage but also exhibiting their commitment to the Land of Israel while mastering a diverse academic curriculum. I see a resourcefulness that they are acquiring, a resiliency for problem-solving, and a passion for invention that tells me they are already taking ownership of our Jewish destiny. This educationally directed, limitless energy and focused commitment propel young Torah Academy graduates to transition into trail blazing leaders of the Jewish Community of the future.

Rabbi Jonathan Kroll Head of School Weinbaum Yeshiva High School To secure the Jewish future, our students need to gain a love for Judaism, for Torah learning, and for Israel. To enhance the Jewish future our students need to develop the self-confidence to make a difference, to follow the Jewish tradition of seeing the world not just as it is but imagining it as it ought to be. Essentially, these two goals of securing and enhancing the Jewish future parallel the dialectic between the values of humility and confidence. Our students need to develop a deep understanding of Jewish learning, an ability to analyze text, and an appreciation that our tradition possesses a rich and profound wisdom, while recognizing with humility that the world of Jewish learning is vast and that there is so much more for them to learn. On the other hand, that humility needs to be balanced by pride and confidence in their own abilities to shape the Jewish future. Jewish learning and leadership need to be experienced in high school with great energy, joy, and excitement so that our students are not just capable of securing and enhancing the Jewish future but are passionate about doing so. We want our students to understand that, as Modern Orthodox Jews, our foundation is rooted firmly in the Torah and that we embrace the best of what the world at large has to offer. Identifying with Modern Orthodox values allows our students to be uniquely poised to assume leadership positions in the Jewish world and the world at large as they secure and enhance the Jewish future.

Rabbi Josh Broide Joins Federation A familiar face at Federation is becoming more so, as Rabbi Josh Broide becomes our first Director of Community Engagement. We know “Josh” from his pivotal roles at meetings and events, through our P&A Committee and Outreach Task Force, March of the Living, and as a vital advisor. He’s also well-known and highly regarded throughout our Jewish community after fourteen years of professional service, most recently as Outreach Rabbi for Boca Raton Synagogue. “I couldn’t be more excited about this important step,” said Matt Levin, Federation President & CEO. “For two years, we’ve been particularly dedicated to building dynamic new partnerships and strengthening existing ones with our synagogues, agencies and organizations, to the benefit of our entire Jewish community. With his unique combination of education, skill, experience and magnetic presence, Josh is ready to bring us even closer together.” At Federation, Rabbi Broide will also continue to direct his nationally recognized Boca Raton Jewish Experience. For Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services, he’ll provide chaplaincy services. “He’s truly a gift to our community,” said Larry Feldman, Federation’s King David Society Co-chair and Chair of the Marketing Committee. “Josh has an amazing ability to connect people with the beauty and wisdom of our tradition. His vibrancy and joy are absolutely contagious.” Josh looks forward to “bringing the community into our Federation and bringing Federation into the community for the benefit of all… wait til you see what’s coming!” A recipient of our Federation’s James and Marjorie Baer Outstanding Young Leadership Award, as well as the Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education, Josh has also been lauded by JFNA as a Jewish Community Hero, and by the National Jewish Outreach Program.

campaign My new season took off in high gear alongside a group of our dedicated Federation women, at the September International Lion of Judah Conference in New York City. We never fail to return from ILOJC charged up, full of ideas and even more powerfully committed to work for the well-being of our Jewish family both near and far. I was so deeply honored to represent the women of our community by receiving the Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award before my SPBC sisters and 1,400 passionate Lions from around the world. With great generosity and determination, our women are truly a driving force that enables us to do so much good for our Federation.

Every New Year brings opportunities of hope and promise for the Jewish people. Situations in Israel, in Ukraine, in Europe and beyond, as well as hunger, frail Holocaust survivors and family misfortunes in our own community remind us of our critical role in delivering that hope and making good on that promise. Our 2014-15 Annual Campaign follows two years of increases in numbers of contributors and dollars raised. But far too many in our Jewish family near and far still wait for help.

One quite remarkable woman has joined our Federation in a pivotal professional role this season. In August, we welcomed Cathrine Fischer Schwartz as Vice President, Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation. Her extensive skills and experience bring a vital addition to accelerate our increasing endowments for the future of our community and our people.

The New Year also brings us opportunities for reflection and renewal… time to consider the mark we wish to make. So I ask, “What do YOU value?” If you value safety net services for our neighbors in need, or building and preserving Jewish identity and community, or supporting Israel and our global family – one organization is here every day of every year: the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

With gratitude,

I invite you to put your values into action.

KING DAVID SOCIETY MISSION TO CHINA Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an March 8-17, 2015 Optional extension to Hong Kong March 17-20, 2015 Steeped in history and rapidly emerging as a world power, today’s China is a fascinating mix of the modern and the ancient, the dazzling and the quaint. Together we’ll tour imperial palaces, climb the Great Wall and explore winding back streets. And we’ll encounter the incredible Shanghai Jewish community – founded by Baghdad Jews in the 1800’s, a refuge for thousands fleeing the Holocaust and the Russian Revolution, and, though small, still going strong today.

Profile in Giving B

Betty Kane: A Destiny Shaped by History

orn in Egypt in the mid-1940s, our Federation’s Campaign Chair Betty Kane traces her roots all the way back to 15th-century Spain. Her own early years in Cairo at a unique time in Jewish history shaped her worldview and inspired a life devoted to the Jewish people.

“Jews were long welcomed and respected in Egypt, where they thrived and contributed greatly,” she remembers. “For two generations, my family led a gracious, secure life steeped in tradition and community. During the Shoah, the Jews of Egypt were spared the terrible fate of those in Europe, where my relatives in France perished.” But the creation of the State of Israel in 1948 marked a major shift. “We would tape all our windows when rocks were thrown during demonstrations,” Betty recalls. Soon, a military coup brought increased uncertainty and new laws restricted Jews’ lives and professions. Following the 1956 Suez crisis, the Jews were ordered to leave Egypt. “They packed their lives in a suitcase, leaving behind homes, businesses, a cherished history,” she remembers. “My family found refuge in Paris, but my father, placed under house arrest in Cairo, could not join us for 16 months. They took away our passports and our material goods, but they could not take away our spirit, our Jewish values.” Within a few years, hundreds of thousands of Jews fled Arab lands where they had lived for centuries. Betty notes, “It was the Jewish community at large - no UN relief agency - that came to the rescue of those who had lost everything. It was the most eloquent expression of Jewish responsibility.” At 16, Betty traveled to Israel with a youth group. “I felt an immediate connection with this young nation of pioneers, immigrants and refugees committed to forging a nation for all Jews,” she recalls. “This small, fledgling country— which had just absorbed the remnants of European Jewry—was now caring for tens of thousands who had fled Arab lands. The very notion of Jewish sovereignty was intoxicating— Jewish destiny in Jewish hands! I could not help but think, “had there been an Israel, there could not have been a Holocaust. The Jews would have had a sanctuary.” As a law student in France, Betty met her husband Herb, a New Yorker living and working in Europe. Settling in America, they became involved in their Jewish community of Cherry Hill, NJ. Soon, the Yom Kippur War broke out. “Herb came home overwhelmed with emotion. He sat me down and said, ‘Don’t be angry or worried, but I did something irrational. I just donated more than we should to the Federation— but I felt we must.’” In 1976, the Kanes went on a life-changing National UJA mission to Israel. “It reignited a passion in me which determined my path,” says Betty, who continues to travel the world, observing Federation dollars at work and coming home “even more mindful of how critical is our work.” While raising two sons, Betty served as UJA Campaign Chair in her community and, nationally, as National Women’s Philanthropy Chair, President and life member. She has been on the JDC board since 1993. Prior to becoming Campaign Chair here, Betty chaired our Israel and Overseas Committee. “The federation system is an incredible community, organized and proactive with a steadfast mission: the betterment of the Jewish condition locally and worldwide,” she reflects. “And everyone can participate!” CHAILIFE 20

Desserts, Dialogue & Compelling Speaker Open EJP Season With a riveting presentation and dynamic company, our Emerging Jewish Philanthropists (EJP) began their third season on October 28. Warmly welcomed to the home of Ellen and Jon Channing, they were joined by guests interested in learning about this exciting and inspiring community for Federation’s younger major donors. Nearly 50 attendees enjoyed desserts, socializing, and intensive dialogue with Kasim Hafeez - a radical Muslim turned Zionist and proud supporter of Israel. Raised in a Muslim community in the UK, Hafeez learned strong anti-Western, anti-Israel, and anti-Semitic beliefs from an early age. Reading The Case for Israel by Alan Dershowitz as a teen changed his views, and he began speaking out about the lies being told about Israel, the threat of radical Islam and human rights. After speaking, Hafeez answered many in-depth questions one-on-one. Chaired by Gail and Warren Greenspoon, EJP brings together younger donors whose households contribute $10,000+ to our Annual Campaign. They enjoy concerts, intimate gatherings at donors’ homes, private expert briefings, and missions abroad. Contact Dana Vizner at 561.852.3270 or danav@bocafed.org.

A sold-out crowd kicked off the men’s season in high gear with a firstclass evening at Prime Cigar & Wine Bar in Boca Raton on October 13, 2014. Of all ages, they were mesmerized as Whiskey Ambassador David Laird from William Grant & Sons shared his knowledge of the spirit. Through a thick Scottish accent, Laird explained to the group that whiskey is not a party drink. “It’s meant to be enjoyed when you gather with friends and share stories,” he said. While sampling, the men even tasted a new scotch not yet released, as they enjoyed high-end cigars. Many observed that a great social atmosphere helps them connect and form rewarding alliances they may not normally find. “Just looking around the room, it was clear that the men enjoyed learning about whiskey and spending a most enjoyable time together,” said Chuck Lichtman. “We all look forward to getting together again at more Men’s Division opportunities to learn and have fun as we help the community.” Federation’s Men’s Division is generously sponsored by BNY Mellon Wealth Management.

The Pride Roars through the Big Apple at ILOJC (September 2014)

S

ome of South Palm Beach County’s most resonant Lions roared across New York City during a few action-packed September days. They joined members of the pride from around the world for the biennial International Lion of Judah Conference. Just to start, our own Lions enjoyed two days of special activities together, visiting the Center of Jewish History and hearing from Rabba Sara Hurwitz, a Modern Orthodox spiritual leader and educator who grew up in Boca Raton. They also enjoyed watching and even modeling in a fashion show at Bloomingdales. And with dinner, testimonials and even poetry, they personally lauded our own Anne Jacobson, our 2014 KipnisWilson/Friedland honoree, before she formally received her award later in the week. At the conference, our Lions heard from some of today’s most respected speakers on issues affecting our Jewish community at home and abroad. The plenaries and dynamic breakouts included highlevel leaders from JFNA, governments in the U.S. and Israel, the nonprofit world and philanthropy - all inspiring and increasing the Lions’ capacity to do their vital work at home. Led by Conference Co-Chairs Phyllis Liss and Ellen Channing and Pre-Conference Activities Chair Janice Obuchowski; Lion Vice Chair Eydie Holz; Women’s Philanthropy Campaign Chair April Leavy and Women’s Philanthropy Chair Judi Schuman, our delegation took full advantage of the ILOJC New York experience. Our conference participants also contributed more than half a million dollars to our Federation’s Annual Campaign.

Committee

Lauren Koblick, 30 Engaging and identifying our young Jewish adults is very important to me. I encourage my generation to commit to Jewish values and create a base of strong adult leaders to ensure our future.

Bryan M. Drowos, 35 YAD Chair

Eric Marbach, 31

Throughout history, the Jewish people have survived and thrived in large part due to the high value we place on caring for one another and for community. This ignites my passion for Federation’s great work. YAD inspires our young community to find their passion and provides opportunities to continue and add to this legacy.

I’m involved with the YAD Committee because I feel it is important to stay up to date on vital Jewish concerns, and to help our Jewish community as much as possible.

Emily Einhorn, 29 Social Action Co-chair YAD is a way to engage in my community and help make its future bright. Working with other young adults on social action and outreach is a fun way to meet people and learn about our incredible Jewish community.

Jeremy Cohen, 31 Yudi Gross, 34 YAD provides me with an important avenue to connect with young Jewish adults, give back to our community, promote Judaism and stay connected to Israel. Erika Lewin-Harris, 39 Social Action Co-chair

I’ve always believed in being involved to ensure a thriving Jewish community. The next generation must always build the future, so YAD plays one of our community’s most critical roles. With like-minded peers, we can truly shape the future of our community and beyond through Federation.

I grew up in Boca Raton, where I now live with my own family. YAD has the perfect vehicles to give back to my community, help people in Israel, and teach my children the importance of mitzvot. Shayna Martinoff, 35 In my mid-20s, on a JFNA YL Mission to Israel, I felt an amazing connection to my Jewish heritage and a responsibility to help those in need. After working at Miami Federation, I moved to Boca 5 years ago and joined YAD. As a mother, I know the importance of a strong Jewish community for our children and the future.

Robert Weingard, 28 Social Co-chair On Birthright, I made lifelong connections with our homeland and friends. I thought if 50 young people from all over the world could forge this incredible bond, why not do the same thing right here? I’ll be living here for many decades and want to help build our Jewish community and continue Federation’s important work. Sarah Lippy, 25 Recently relocated here, I became involved with YAD to not only meet a circle of likeminded people, but to also continue my parents’ and grandparents’ leadership as an active, lifelong participant in helping ensure our Jewish future locally and around the world.

YAD Happy Hours Travel the World without Leaving Florida Dynamic and growing crowds of Jewish young adults from their 20s to early 40s keep mixing and mingling with great company at YAD Happy Hours. In July, during Operation Protective Edge in Israel, attendees gathered at Saltwater Brewery in Delray Beach and experienced more than great craft beer and camaraderie. They learned about the Federation’s Israel Emergency Campaign, heard a first-hand experience of Israel under siege and watched a riveting video of an Israeli soldier who had recently participated in the Federation’s Birthright trip. In September, the nearby Atlantic Ocean and beach created the feel of being transported to a tropical island at Sandbar at Boston’s in Delray Beach. The crowd was captivated by a High Holiday message from Rabbi Josh Broide. Fall also brought a true Oktoberfest at Biergarten in east Boca, complete with a traditional polka band and authentic German beers. The event was attended by more than 100 people including one newcomer who commented on how much the young Jewish community needs opportunities like YAD Happy Hours to build both personal relationships and professional alliances. business & professional Division (B&P)

Women’s Business Casual Stirs Up the Night Federation’s B&P Division has redefined the term business casual. Adding fun and purpose to the phrase, they’ve created Business Casual – a series of innovative, activity-based networking opportunities exclusively for women looking to build their professional and community alliances. These dynamic women had a great night sharing their business connections while learning to create wok delicacies at Asia on September 4. They’ve also created their own masterpieces at Vino Van Gogh, designing Passover Seder plates and more. Chaired by Tracy Kawa and Stephanie Midler. Business Casual continues at 6 p.m. on December 2 with Golf 101 at the Golf Academy. Contact sonnis@bocafed.org or 561.852.3128.

Business & Community Connect after Work: B&P Networking Happy Hours About 170 Jewish professionals from a wide array of fields were on the move, meeting and making new connections at the B&P Summer Networking Happy Hour on July 15. The energy was high as they enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres amid the finest in networking at NY Prime in Boca Raton. The guests heard from Dan Levine about the personal value and professional benefits of getting involved with the B&P Division. They also heard from Rich Steinberg, Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation Chair, about his compelling recent mission to Israel as the rocket attacks began. Then the new season’s first B&P Networking Happy Hour drew a crowd at Asia Restaurant in Boca Raton on October 22, for another great evening connecting and getting to know each other in a casual setting.

OPERATION PROTECTIVE EDGE

OUR COMMUNITY RESPONDS

While Hamas had the vast majority of Israel’s population within the range of rocket fire –all of Israel was within reach of our help! South Palm Beach County responded quickly and generously to our Federation’s Israel Emergency Campaign. In only two weeks, our community raised more than $550,000 to care for thousands of families, elderly and disabled. And 100% of these contributions were immediately sent to provide vital programs and services right where they were most needed. Because of our Annual Campaign, Federation’s overseas beneficiary agencies were already in place and able to respond in Israel at a moment’s notice.

IMMEDIATE RELIEF FROM THE LINE OF FIRE FOR MORE THAN 45,000 CHILDREN These kindergartners took cover daily as teachers worked to maintain a degree of normalcy and calm. Our partner agencies helped 45,000 children and teens who live near Gaza with much-needed respite in summer camps, youth villages and field trips away from continual sirens and explosions. And they helped ease the fear and confinement with activities for extended periods in bomb shelters.

CHAILIFE 38

LIFE-SUSTAINING EXTRA HELP FOR 20,000 OF ISRAEL’S MOST VULNERABLE Trapped in her home by unending sirens, this 94-year-old would have been isolated if not for visits by a helper from our beneficiary agency. Many seniors and Israelis with disabilities unable to reach safety in the 15 seconds were confined to shelters or safe rooms. Our partners made sure they had food, medicine, assistance, companionship and reassurance.

When our family in Israel endured more than 4,500 rocket attacks this summer, running and hiding amid countless sirens, our community came together immediately in solidarity and support for our homeland. Of all ages, from all neighborhoods, denominations and Jewish backgrounds, we raised one voice and reached helping hands across the globe to embrace our brothers and sisters under siege as one with our caring community. Our Federation and its Jewish Community Relations Council rallied more than a thousand people, not once but twice - first to “bring back our boys” days before hearing the three Israeli teens were viciously murdered, and then to bring the community together in solidarity for Israel’s efforts – and right - to defend our homeland through Operation Protective Edge.

Dozens of community members, including local rabbis and our delegation to the JFNA CCD Mission traveled to Israel to show that we are truly one family,. They experienced first-hand the stark realities faced by Israelis under siege. Many others visited soon after the conflict.

TRAUMA SUPPORT FOR 15,000 ISRAELI RESIDENTS Rushing to bomb shelters during continual attacks and warnings took its toll, especially as the weeks went on. Federation supported vital counseling services to address immediate trauma and prevent long-term damage among Israelis most affected – including many children and Holocaust survivors.

Our delegation joined more than 600 top leaders of Federations and JCRCs, members of the Conference of Presidents and key government leaders at the National Press Club in Washington, DC for the urgently scheduled national Leadership Assembly for Israel.

AID TO DOZENS OF COMMUNITIES HIT HARDEST Home alone when the alarms went off, an elderly woman emerged to find that this was all that was left of her house. Federation support quickly bridged gaps between rising emergency and rebuilding needs and frontline communities’ capacity to meet them.

JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION What Do You Value? The community we enjoy today is the sum total of many people’s plans, dreams and values… educating our children, helping the vulnerable, ensuring the safety of Israel, fighting antiSemitism... to name just a few. You may ask yourself, “What Do I Value?” and “How Will I Pass On My Values?” Whatever your goals, interests and circumstances, there’s a planned giving option available through our JJCF to match your values and passions with the community’s needs. You can secure vital Jewish community programs today while ensuring that you’ll be remembered beyond your lifetime. A lasting Jewish Impact is within your reach through the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation, where your values live on.

JJCF Selected for Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s Life & Legacy Program The Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation is pleased to announce that its Create a Jewish Legacy program has been selected by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) to participate in Life & Legacy, a twoyear partnership to promote afterlifetime giving to benefit Jewish day schools, synagogues and social service organizations. Through training, support and monetary incentives, Life & Legacy motivates Jewish organizations to secure legacy gifts, steward donors and integrate legacy giving into the philanthropic culture of the Jewish community. Only a handful of communities throughout North America are accepted to participate in Life & Legacy each year, and the

communities that have been involved have had overwhelming success, collectively raising millions of dollars in after-lifetime giving. Create a Jewish Legacy will hold at least four training sessions this year, with both the curriculum and instruction provided by the Grinspoon Foundation’s Life & Legacy staff. CJL currently has 15 community partners, all of whom will be invited to apply to be part of the Life & Legacy program, thus making them eligible for monetary incentives if benchmarks are met. The “Why Legacy, Why Now” kickoff and information session will be held on Monday, December 1, 8:30-11 am in Zinman Hall on the Federation campus.

CJL Community Partners: In August, we welcomed our new Federation Vice President of JJCF, Cathrine Fischer Schwartz. who most recently served as President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford Cathy brings us 25 years of outstanding Federation experience, including extremely successful community-wide endowment initiatives. Profile in Giving

Craig Donoff: Working From the Heart

T

he array of photos and awards that line the walls of Craig Donoff’s office are testament to his priorities on family and service as well as his ability to connect with some of the world’s most eminent people. As Founder and President of a successful estate planning law firm for 40 years, it’s also clear his advice is highly respected. So, when longtime client Naomi Myers, z”l, considered the legacy she would bequest through her estate, she turned to Craig. And the answer came easily. “Naomi had been my client for 25 years. She knew about my son Chase, who had autism, and about the struggles that Chase and our family faced as a result,” says Craig. Their talks led to creation of the Chase Donoff Special Needs Program, part of the Naomi and Saul Myers and Rose and Leon Barrows Endowment Fund for Children with Special Needs that was given to our Federation’s Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation in August, a year after Naomi’s passing. For more than a decade, Craig and his daughter Lindsey, a partner at his firm who worked with Craig on the Myers endowment, have campaigned for local programs and access to education and services for children with special needs. “When Chase was young, every day he traveled by bus 45 minutes each way to the closest place,” explains Craig. “We had resources for the assistance he needed, but what happens to parents who don’t? It’s an enormous strain emotionally, financially and physically, and this program will help give parents a break from the full-court press of caretaking.” Chase passed away in 2006 at age 19 from an autism-related seizure. Shortly after, the family established special needs after-school and camp programming in his name at the YMCA of Boca Raton. “It’s an unbelievable feeling to know you are impacting families—giving kids with special needs a fun place to socialize and not feel isolated— and giving their parents some much-needed respite,” Craig says. “Now, many more families will benefit through Naomi’s generosity.” “Through our Federation, the endowment in Chase’s name will help identify and fill gaps in local programming,” explains Federation President & CEO Matthew Levin. “Further, as seed money, it can motivate others to contribute to the Fund or make an annual gift that will help us benefit children with special needs. This is all thanks to the generosity of Naomi Myers, and the vision and stewardship of Craig Donoff.” Raised on North Miami Beach, Craig’s commitment to South Florida’s Jewish community runs long and deep. His involvements have included AIPAC, Temple Beth El and Israel Bonds, as well as our Federation and Foundation boards. A longtime PAC member, Craig was named the third Mitzvah Society honoree for his generosity and leadership. “I’m fortunate to have worked with great Jewish philanthropists who inspired, educated and supported me,” he says. “When I moved to St. Andrews in 1982, my older neighbor engaged me in the annual campaign. I learned about all Federation does to better so many lives. It feels so good to help, and to now be a role model encouraging others.” “As an estate attorney I find generous clients are drawn to my Jewish involvement and giving,” he says.“I listen. I ask. I don’t push. But if I’m able to help them consider a meaningful philanthropic opportunity, I do.”

Tax Saving Strategies It’s been a banner year on Wall Street and many stocks have increased in value. Giving appreciated stock directly to the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation can significantly increase the amount of funds that you have available for charitable giving while providing you with a larger tax benefit. You are entitled to a tax deduction for the full fair market value of such gifts, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income, and you pay no capital gains tax on any appreciation. The tax savings leaves you with additional assets that can fund charitable gifts! Charitable contributions of long-term securities (those held for more than one year), including stocks, bonds, and mutual fund shares, remain one of the most taxefficient ways to establish a donor advised fund (DAF). You benefit from an up-front deduction and you can choose which qualifying charities receive distributions at a later date. The next time you rebalance your investment portfolio, the DAF can be the repository for some or all of your appreciated securities. Another strategy to consider is creating a charitable remainder trust (“CRT”) funded by appreciated stock. In addition to avoiding the capital gains tax, the CRT provides you with a current charitable deduction as well as an income stream. Donors 70 ½ or older can continue to donate up to $100,000 from Roth or traditional IRAs without including the amount of their IRA withdrawals in gross income. The IRA Charitable Rollover allows for distributions directly to charitable organizations; normally, the IRA owner would have to pay tax on the IRA funds prior to claiming the deduction. This is especially helpful for donors who don’t normally itemize!

Groundbreaking Technion/FAU Partnership Announced at Federation The Institute of Technology (Technion), located in Haifa, and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton announced an historic new collaboration at a reception hosted by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County on September 16, 2014. About 300 local residents including many Federation supporters and friends listened as the partnership between FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and the Technion’s Ruth and Bruce Rappaport Faculty of Medicine was made public. The collaboration is the first Technion American Medical School (TeAMS) program in Florida. It includes FAU’s College of Medicine among a handful of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada, which have established partnerships with the Technion — a science and technological university established in 1912. The partnership will expand scholarly ties, develop student programs and promote international and intercultural understanding, advancing medical and scientific initiatives between Florida and Israel. In a pilot initiative, the exchange will enable FAU medical students to enroll at Technion for extended studies. Following a welcome to Federation from Albert W. Gortz, Federation Board Chair and a member of FAU College of Medicine’s Advisory Board, dignitaries described the history and work of both institutions and highlighted the benefits to be derived from the association. The audience heard from John Kelly, President of FAU; Nancy Aronson, President, South Palm Beach County Chapter of the American Technion Society; Eliezer Shalev, MD, Dean of the Technion Faculty of Medicine; David J. Bjorkman, MD, Dean of FAU’s College of Medicine; State Senator Maria Sachs and Chaim Shacham, Consul General of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico.

PARTNERSHIP2GETHER Building Family and Community with Israel

Our Federation’s Sister City may be located across the globe but, since 2002, we’ve been getting closer and closer to our extended family in Kiryat Bialik, north of Haifa in Israel. Through Partnership 2Gether (P2G), we’ve been building living bridges between residents and institutions to enhance both communities. Coming together around common experiences and needs, women, teens, schoolchildren, educators and other professionals take part in exchanges and visits. They’ve created an ever-strengthening multigenerational Boca-Bialik family that enthusiastically creates opportunities to spend time and work together. Here are just a few very recent examples…

A Moving March of the Living Visit “Going to Kiryat Bialik for Yom HaZikaron (Israel Memorial Day), where I laid a wreath at a high school ceremony, changed my outlook on everything. Every single person in Israel knows someone who has lost a loved one in the military. Everyone has a sense of ownership and cares about each other and their whole community.” -Ian Finkelstein

P2G Women’s Exchange Reunion About 20 local participants in our current and three previous Federation’s Partnership 2Gether Women’s Exchanges with Kiryat Bialik came together with Israeli chefs in October for a special reunion. They’ve built lasting relationships, staying in touch electronically and scheduling further visits with their KB “sisters.” Our current Women’s Exchange participants will return from Israel in November with warm hearts and wonderful stories.

Maccabi Games Open Homes and Hearts At the summer Maccabi Games hosted by our Levis JCC, athletes from Kiryat Bialik competed as part of our South Palm Beach County team. Enthusiastic members of our community opened their homes to host them. “It was our pleasure to host Noa & Paz. The girls were lovely and I know we have made lifelong friends.” -Talia Klein “All I have to say is that we miss the boys dearly, and look forward to seeing them in the near future! Our whole family built friendships with the boys and their families for many years to come.” -Alyson & Shay Lev

It was very gratifying to see the positive effect upon the Ethiopian community in education, employment and health. Children who might have been “lost” to society are becoming educated and participating positively in all areas.” -Frank J. Weinstock, MD, FACS

“Our students talk constantly about their time in Kiryat Bialik and keep in touch with their new friends through social media. They meet so shyly as strangers, their relationships blossom into lasting memories and shared bonds, and they depart with hugs and tears - as if they have known each other forever. -Kim Beame, Director of Education, Congregation B’nai Israel

DKJA 8th Graders Find their Second Home “Visiting Kiryat Bialik is taking our students to their friends. We bring them to their second home, help them see Israel through hands-on activities and hikes as well as interaction with its people. Meeting peers from Kiryat Bialik helps our students realize, first-hand, how similar they are – their interests, pop culture and much more – which only strengthens their ties to Israel.” ~Liat Luel-Rochberg, Middle School Music Teacher at Donna Klein Jewish Academy

Birthright Israel Community Bus Connects in KB When our Birthright Israel Community Bus explored Israel this summer, local young adults traveled with eight young Israeli peers. Adding immeasurably to the experience, these soldiers and students from Kiryat Bialik and other parts of Israel provided a wealth of information as well as a view of Israel through their eyes.

UKRAINE UNREST CONTINUES FEDERATION IS THERE As unrest and violence persist in portions of the Ukraine, so does concern for our people there. Among the largest and poorest Jewish populations worldwide, Ukrainian Jews are profoundly affected by the political and economic instability that have wracked the country this year. The extremely volatile conflicts have put many Jewish people and institutions in turbulent environments where personal and community well-being and security are greatly at risk. With lessons from our painful history close at hand in the Ukraine, we must stand ready to care for our Jewish family, whatever may come. And we are there - by supporting our overseas partners through our Annual Campaign and as part of JFNA’s national call to action for increased needs in Ukraine. Amid bombings and shootings, deprivation and displacement, Federation’s overseas partners on the ground, including the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), keep rising to the challenges as they emerge and shift. Through them, we are providing food and shelter, medicine and counseling, cooking and heating fuel. We have bolstered security for Jewish institutions, expanded summer camps and youth programs, and responded to rapidly rising inquiries about aliyah Ukrainian immigration to Israel has tripled since the start of 2014!

“The gunfire was terrible, everybody ran for their lives. We were hiding in the basement, scared. When I came back and saw my house, it was indescribable. We were just left on the street and that’s it. What I felt was emptiness.”

“You go outside and you don’t know whether you’ll be able to come back home and keep your kids safe. The sirens and explosions scare them to death.”

“We have no running water, no sewer systems, not enough food, no electricity, no heat. No working gas stations so no transportation. And the stores are empty. Thousands of us are suffering, devastated and lost.”

“People couldn’t leave their houses and had nothing to eat, so we made deliveries by bicycle, on foot, sometimes under fire. We show that we still care and we are still with them.”

“Thank G-d we found shelter. They are finding places for everyone, and no one gets left on the street. From the bottom of my heart I thank those who are helping us. I don’t know what would happen without you.”
