Welcome to Chai Life AFTER ANOTHER BANNER YEAR, THE BEST IS YET TO COME As we wind down our 2015 season, we celebrate yet another year of tremendous growth and success. Our Annual Campaign is on the rise for the third year in a row and the assets in our Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation are reaching unprecedented numbers. We are funding more agencies, engaging more young leaders and attracting more residents of all ages to our events – more than 3,000 attended our recent IsraelFest celebration in Mizner Park. Spirits are on the rise as well as we have added many new exciting programs and initiatives and most notably hired our first-ever Director of Community Engagement, Rabbi Josh Broide, who has been enthusiastically connecting unaffiliated Jews to local Jewish life. But that’s just the beginning. On the horizon this upcoming season are several new milestones. In addition to many innovative outreach programs and events, we will be embarking on our community-wide mission to Israel in November. On our Jewish campus, we will be celebrating the opening of the Sinai Residences, a Continuing Care Retirement Community, and the groundbreaking for the new Weinbaum Yeshiva High School. And we will be extending our caring reach to new agency partners, both locally and internationally, as part of a newly improved process of needs-based planning and allocations. Things are looking up as never before here at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. As we approach a new year, we invite you to join in the excitement and be a part of our vibrant, dynamic Jewish community.

A JOURNEY TO IMPACT From the Hub of Our Community Where Jewish Paths Converge: Our 2015 Annual Meeting
Emily Grabelsky, Dorothy Wizer
With applause and cheers ringing throughout the night, an outsider might have thought they had entered a rally rather than our Federation’s 2015 Annual Meeting. Indeed, on April 29, 260 Federation leaders and donors, rabbis and agency heads, volunteers and staff arrived at Zinman Hall with plenty to celebrate. We all came together at the hub of our community to kvell about the year’s shared accomplishments, pay well-earned tribute to our leaders, and look more strategically than ever toward needs and challenges that lie ahead for our community and our people.
Margie Baer, Bob Marton
Anne Jacobson, Richard Steinberg
From the moment the evening’s Co-Chairs Emily Grabelsky and Dorothy Wizer welcomed the crowd aboard, everyone knew they were in for a quite a ride! By video, we toured our Federation’s work across the campus and around the world. With Nominating Chair Roxane Lipton, the meeting welcomed the 2015-16 Board of Directors, including our first Chair Designate, Anne Jacobson; new Financial Resource Development Chair, David Pratt; new Campaign Chair, Larry Feldman; and new Treasurer, David Galpern. Five extraordinary members of our community were honored for their contributions to our organization, our community and our people. Dotti Seaman (z’l) was remembered with the JFNA National Endowment Achievement Award. Betty Kane, our brilliant Campaign Chair for the past two years, received the James H. Nobil Community Leadership Award. Bob Marton accepted the James and Marjorie Baer Outstanding Young Leadership Award, and the James H. Nobil Professional Achievement Award was presented to Tom Forlenza and Robyn Kimmelman.
“Looking around this room and back over the past year, as a Founder of this Federation I see this is the caring Jewish community we envisioned. It is a privilege to work with leaders who view their roles as a sacred responsibility and who share an emotional commitment to the vision and purpose so crucial to our success.” -Al Gortz, Board Chair in his remarks (read more at jewishboca.org/almessage)

“Yes, something very special is happening here as more people and entities come together in new ways to fulfill our mission. There’s a buzz out there about our success, but we’re only just getting started. I challenge all of us to spread the word, to collaborate, to close those gaps of people waiting for services, to prepare for a future in which our Jewish family will need us no less than they do today.” -Matt Levin, President & CEO in his remarks (view the video and speech at jewishboca.org/presidentvision)

mid a sea of blue and white, more than 3,000 local residents came together in solidarity and spirit to celebrate the 67th anniversary – and the miracles - of the modern State of Israel and observe Jerusalem Day at IsraelFest. The ruach and the aroma of falafel emanated from Mizner Park Amphitheater in East Boca Raton on May 17. The community’s vibrant Jewish diversity was on full display at what was by far the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s largest event of the year. The free community-wide celebration engaged all ages with an array of activities, headlined by the collaboration of two superstars of Jewish music, Josh Nelson and Neshama Carlebach. It also included children’s activities by PJ Library® in South Palm Beach County, a showcase of synagogues and Jewish organizations, a set by Kosher Rock, and bands from Weinbaum Yeshiva High School and Donna Klein Jewish Academy. Thanks to Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council, there was free admission to Israeli and Jewish-themed exhibits at the Boca Raton Museum of Art next to the amphitheater. The crowd heard from Chaim Shacham, Consul General of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico, Federation President & CEO Matt Levin and Board Chair Al Gortz, JCRC Co-Chair Andrew Robins, as well as support from U.S. Representatives Ted Deutch and Lois Frankel, and Boca Raton City Council member Scott Singer joined by Vice Mayor Robert Weinroth, and Pastor Tye Riter of REVEAL Fellowship. Held on Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day), IsraelFest also brought diverse community rabbis to the stage for a moving ceremony: Rabbis Josh Broide (Federation Director of Community Engagement), David Baum, Marci Bloch, David Englander, Efrem Goldberg, Menachem Jaroslawicz, Philip Moskowitz, Robert Silvers and Greg Weisman. As anyone entering the north gate of Federation’s campus can see, Sinai Residences of Boca Raton is well on its way to welcoming our new neighbors to state-of-the-art, active senior living at the start of 2016. Federation and community leaders, local Rabbis, project partners, and future residents gathered at the site on March 3 for a traditional “topping off” ceremony. Scheduled to mark the construction having reached the $250 million structure’s highest point, with blessings for the building and its more than 450 future inhabitants, the event had more to celebrate with the announcement that all 237 independent luxury units had already been fully reserved. It’s no surprise that the waiting list has kept growing ever since - given the project’s careful planning and highest quality as well as the Federation’s reputation. In addition to independent living, as a Continuing Care Retirement Community, Sinai Residences will also have suites for assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing care. “Built on 23 vacant acres, Sinai Residences not only serves our seniors’ need for a secure, luxurious home in an enriched Jewish environment, but will also help the Federation generate revenue to enhance the vital human services and programs we support,” said Melvyn Lowell, COO, Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, who has spearheaded the project since its inception. For this issue, we asked the heads of four of Federation’s local safety net services agencies to respond to one question. Their wisdom and compassion, creativity and perseverance exemplify their agencies’ vital contributions to those in need in our community.
Danielle Hartman, President & CEO Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services
Dr. Debra Hallow, Executive Director JARC
JFS was established in 1979 as the first agency of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. From the outset, JFS has been committed to identifying and responding to vital community needs. We continue to offer an expanding continuum of counseling and mental health services, along with food and financial assistance. Here are a just a few agency milestones.
At JARC, we specialize in helping extraordinary people lead ordinary lives. What does that mean? It means that every adult should know the joy of friendship, the satisfaction of doing work that is valued, and the comfort of being a loved and important member of a community.
In 1996, our Food Pantry was created to serve our hungry neighbors with food deliveries; in 2012, the Jacobson Family Food Pantry opened in Delray to meet the community’s increasing needs. Continually responding to our community’s needs, two years ago we began our Meals on Wheels Program to homebound seniors with help from the Federation. In 2010, the Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center opened. This center for seniors combines social services and cultural, social, educational and recreational programs. In addition, there is a full array of senior services, including case management, Holocaust survivor assistance, and the HOT Senior Assistance Program. In 2013, the agency was renamed Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services, recognizing the ongoing commitment of the Rales family and creating the Center for Families and Children. This transformative gift allowed JFS to expand its services in the areas of Career & Employment Services, Community Outreach, Domestic Abuse Education and Action, and Financial Assistance for families and children. I look back at our history of service to the community with pride, and look forward to our growth in the future. At JFS, our strong commitment remains- to provide help, hope and humanity to our neighbors. Visit ralesjfs.org
For us it starts with a simple philosophy: we carry a sense of responsibility to be the voice of people who don’t have a voice that is heard, to be the advocate for people who are unable to advocate for themselves. Our goal is not only to be voices and advocates but, more importantly, to assist our clients in using their collective voices and becoming their own advocates. Our programs include residential homes and apartments, community case management, and employment training. Through everything we do, we are developing life skills and growing friendships. At our recent Gala, we heard stories of how JARC has impacted the lives of families who need our services. From a single mother wondering who will care for and protect her child if something happens to her… to the mother of a son who was injured in a car accident over 40 years ago, now at peace knowing her son is being taken care of… to what happens when a client has no family – and JARC becomes their family. As we enter the 2015-2016 season we will be celebrating JARC 30! Visit jarcfl.org
What does your agency strive to provide for the Jewish community?
Sarah Franco, Executive Director JAFCO
Randy Colman, Executive Director Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center
JAFCO is a proud beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. JAFCO’s mission is to care for abused and neglected Jewish children and those with developmental disabilities, and to work in partnership with families and the entire child welfare community. The JAFCO Jewish Children’s Village is the only village of its kind in the Jewish community in the nation, offering emergency shelter, group homes, foster care, adoption services for children ages newborn to 18 and family preservation services to families without cost. The village ensures that if there is a child in the community in need of a safe home, JAFCO can provide that either privately or through the order of the court. Emergency clinical support is available 24/7 to our families.
While the Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center (Levis JCC) features hundreds of outstanding programs, services, classes, events, performances and exhibitions each year, it is so much more. A key connector in this community, the Levis JCC reaches and provides for thousands of individuals and families in a variety of ways. Members, guests, and the community convene at the Levis JCC to give children the highest quality educational foundation, one rooted in Jewish culture and tradition; children of all ages experience summertime fun featuring the best in classic and innovative day camp activities. Adults engage in stimulating, exciting art, culture & learning opportunities. Individuals with special needs and their families are supported and nurtured in a loving and inclusive environment. Quality fitness classes taught by top local instructors and a well-equipped fitness center ensure that health and wellness is within reach for all.
The JAFCO Children’s Ability Center provides family enrichment, resources, support and respite services for children ages birth to 22 who have any developmental disability. Our goal is to support the family from the moment of diagnosis and give the family a place to belong all under one roof. Services include intensive clinical case management, parent behavior training and support, sibling support, grandparent support, parent education, social and life skills training for the child, weekend respite during the day and overnight, summer camp with an overnight option, parent’s night out and family fun days. Emergency clinical support is available 24/7 to our families. Visit jafco.org
The Levis JCC is a place that thousands call home. Often, programming or services become a lifeline for participants. Financial assistance and scholarships make accessing quality education and camping experiences for children attainable. Adult programming connects those who are vulnerable, isolated, or searching for meaningful experiences with a network of friends who often become family. The Levis JCC embodies completely the concept of one Jewish home for all. Regardless of affiliation, background, financial situation, age, or ability, we welcome all to come together and experience what it means to be a part of our community. The Levis JCC makes a difference in people’s lives all through the year. Visit levisjcc.org
“Bring Back Our Boys” Resounds In
“May we continue to focus on what unites us rather than on what divides us.” -Rabbi David Englander
What a night for Jewish Unity. What a night for our community. In all our vibrant Jewish diversity, 500 of us from throughout South Palm Beach County - rabbis, community leaders and Jewish neighbors gathered in Zinman Hall at the Federation on June 3 to answer a resounding call. A call to honor the memories of Israeli teens Naftali Frankel, Gil-Ad Shaer and Eyal Yifrah, whose tragic kidnapping and murder by terrorists last summer so swiftly and powerfully brought the Jewish world together.
at Federation “We have proven here in our community that we can unite in spite of our differences. Because there is, and always will be, so much more that unites us than divides us.” -Matt Levin
The boys’ parents’ joint call to action was amplified by dignitaries and Jewish institutions around the world. With more than 1.2 million people participating worldwide, our event was the largest and most diverse in the nation! Powerful messages of unity resounded through the Hall from six local Reform, Orthodox and Conservative Rabbis: David Baum, Jessica Brockman, Moishe Denburg, David Englander, Menachem Jaroslawicz and Robert Silvers; from Federation President & CEO Matt Levin and Director of Community Engagement Josh Broide; and, on film, from bereaved mother Racheli Frankel and Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau. We were led in prayer and song by Chazan Choni Cohen. Their profound words, song and spirit made for a pivotal night that will long resonate throughout our community. Together, as a remarkable community, we recaptured and strengthened last summer’s peak of Jewish unity and committed to build further upon it. View a video of this powerful community event at jewishboca.org/unity. Local synagogues participating in the Jewish Unity Day gathering included: Anshei Emuna Congregation, B’nai Torah Congregation, Beth Ami Congregation, Boca Jewish Center/Shaaray Tefilla, Boca Raton Synagogue, Boca Raton Synagogue-WEST, Chabad Lubavitch of Central Boca Raton, Chabad Lubavitch of East Boca Raton, Chabad Lubavitch of West Boca Raton, Congregation B’nai Israel, Congregation Shaarei Kodesh, Congregation Torah Ohr, Delray Orthodox Synagogue, Temple Beth El of Boca Raton, Temple Sinai of Palm Beach County, Young Israel of Boca Raton.
“When you see someone not like you, respect them, don’t reject them.” -Rabbi Menachem Jaroslawicz
“Unity not uniformity.” -Racheli Frankel
“We may be on different branches of the tree of Judaism, but the roots of that tree are grounded in the same things: G-d, Torah and Israel.”
What a Year.
-Rabbi Jessica Brockman
What a Community.
“Our community is succeeding because we have made such an effort to come together! And others are watching our remarkable progress. Honoring the memories of Naftali, Gil-Ad and Eyal, we will continue to go from strength to strength in solidarity, in times of both celebration and challenge.” -Rabbi Josh Broide

Federation Campus Welcomes Makom Tefilla (Outdoor Prayer Space)
Boca West Foundation Partnership Helps Children in Need
On a hidden patch of Federation land under a banyan tree, something wonderful happened this spring - with the dedication of a beautiful prayer space of peace and serenity in nature. With a labyrinth, seating, tranquil landscaping and a colorful mural, Makom Tefilla beckons spiritual moments for individuals and groups of all ages. Spearheaded by Marianne Altschul and Donna Klein Jewish Academy, this exquisite campus addition came to fruition with collaborative support from DKJA, Federation, Marianne and Eric Altschul, and Sunquest Nursery.
Thanks to all those who went out on the green with the Boca West Foundation Golf Challenge on our Federation’s behalf, and to the many who enjoyed the Foundation’s Concert for the Children with Jay Leno. Together, they’ve boosted our Federation’s capacity to support help for children in need. Federation is proud - and extremely grateful - to once again be a beneficiary of Boca West Foundation's great generosity!

Rosenblatt High School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy gathered on the FAU campus to engage in a day of challenges as a way of getting to know each other – with ropes dangling from 20 feet above. telephone poles with metal spikes for climbing, and a rickety wooden bridge. Brought together by Federation’s JCRC and Department of Jewish Education, the students are teambuilding toward a community project, also of their choosing, in the coming school year.
We serve fewer clients per advisor than most wealth managers. With a 97% retention rate, apparently we’re on to something. There’s an old saying about quality versus quantity that applies fittingly to wealth management. Take on fewer clients per advisor and you can offer superior service to each. At BNY Mellon Wealth Management, we do just that. So our advisors — and the team of professionals behind them — can keep the client at the center of everything they do. It’s a unique approach that works. Because each client is exactly that — unique. So, if you’re ready for a different kind of wealth manager, maybe it’s time we spoke. Contact Robert M. campaign On completing my three years as your Financial Resource Development Chair, I could not be more proud of how our efforts and initiatives have yielded a stronger, more robust Federation and Jewish community. We’ve reached farther than ever to engage a wide array of residents in Jewish life. We’ve turned around our Annual Campaign. We’ve inspired and educated individuals, synagogues, schools and agencies to create Jewish legacies through our Foundation.
As I write my last Campaign Chair message, I am thrilled to report that we have surpassed our goal to date, having raised more dollars than anticipated and increased our donor base. Building on the growth of the last two years, we maintained our momentum with well-attended events and personal “Jewish conversations” which have raised awareness of our Federation’s mission and yielded new and increased gifts.
I’ve felt the excitement of our coming together in caring and solidarity. I’ve seen the relief and comfort of those who depend on us. Yet I also know how much more is needed by our Jewish family, and the untapped potential of our community to respond even further.
It was a privilege to have chaired our Federation’s Annual Campaign for the last two years. I am most grateful to all the leaders, volunteers and professionals who came with me on that journey. Your creativity, tireless efforts and personal commitment to our mission have been invaluable and greatly contributed to our success.
As Federation’s Chair Designate, I’m now honored and thrilled to work with David Pratt as our new FRD Chair. With so much experience and dedication, I know that he, and we, are ready to take our Federation to that next level.
I wish our new Campaign Chair Larry Feldman a hearty Mazel Tov, and pledge him my support. I know he will find, as I did, fulfillment and reward in this holy work of responding to Jewish needs and sustaining a strong Jewish community.
From strength to greater strength,

EJP Enjoys Dinner, Drinks and Dialogue with Author of THE Jew in the Lotus Federation’s younger major donors, our Emerging Jewish Philanthropists (EJP) enjoyed a night of spirit, inquiry and camaraderie with Rodger Kamenetz at Farmer’s Table in Boca Raton. Members enjoyed cocktails, delicious and healthy fare as well as inviting conversations. The guests were warmly greeted by inaugural EJP Chairs Gail and Warren Greenspoon, who are completing their term as Michele and Larry Blair step into the role. Kamenetz spoke about his work, including the acclaimed book, The Jew in the Lotus, the story of rabbis who make a holy pilgrimage to India to meet the Dalai Lama. Through EJP, younger families and individuals with gifts of at least $10,000 annually to our Federation enjoy being part of an exciting and inspiring community of givers. EJP-level contributors come together to express their Jewish values and help strengthen our growing community with an increasing sense of mission and purpose. They take part in exclusive programs and events such as concerts, intimate gatherings at donors’ homes, private meetings with select speakers and missions abroad. Super Sunday/Good Deeds Day Counts Up Over $400,000 and 20,000 Meals This Super Sunday, our Federation not only banked on volunteers making calls, and caring community members answering them in three shifts of the phone-a-thon. We also counted on another volunteer cadre to observe international Good Deeds Day by assembling kosher meal kits. And the community came through on both counts. The day started off with its first – and largest – gift from the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation and went on to raise $401,089 and counting for our Annual Campaign. Our volunteers also put together 20,786 meal kits for neighbors in need.

Working the phones in Zinman Hall throughout the day, volunteers just kept building that signature Super Sunday community synergy as calls were made, successful pledges excitedly announced and great raffle prizes awarded. They sat with colleagues from a school or agency, with neighbors from a country club, or with others who care deeply about our community and our people. Delegations from AEPi fraternity at FAU and local teen groups also boosted spirits as well as fundraising. Another amazing example of caring took place when more than 200 volunteers arrived for the Good Deeds Day project. Working together with precision in gowns and head coverings, they assembled mounds and mounds of wholesome ingredients into kosher meal kits for recipients of the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS. In another room, PJ Library® in South Palm Beach County taught younger children and their families about mitzvot through stories and crafts, including their own food project. #impact60

a soaring Launch for New Men’s Division From scotch and cigar sampling to a mission to Cuba, from sports celebrities and gourmet tailgate food to a serious look at terrorism financing, our Federation’s brand new Men’s Division took off fast, setting a high bar! Men of all ages who care about great times together as well as helping the community and the Jewish people will certainly have a lot to look forward to together for years to come. Starting with a committee of fifteen, and chaired by Stu Ganslaw, Gary Rubin and Peter Wohlgemuth, the new division’s programming and the men’s relationships just keep growing. Together, they’ve created a strong, connected fellowship of diverse, committed Jewish men. A sold-out crowd kicked the men’s 201415 season off in high gear with a first-class scotch & cigar sampling so successful it’s becoming an annual event. Sports night featuring Cris Carter packed the house with men from throughout the community - including many new donors drawn by the evening and the division. The Men’s Mission to Cuba also sold out. Twenty-one travelers – including 10 first-time donors - took a short flight to a world away for an eye-opening experience. As they met members of our Jewish family whose lives are so different from theirs, their understanding of Federation’s work and their commitment grew - as did their powerful sense of brotherhood that buzzed throughout the community. Spring brought an event focused on a matter of deepest concern as men “followed the money” to learn who has been funding terrorism. Committee member Chuck Lichtman hosted the evening at his waterfront home, with international expert, Dr. Jonathan Schanzer. Exciting plans are underway for men’s activities next season! Installation Celebration Reflects & Rededicates A year of sisterhood, growth, social action and impact
2015-16 Women’s Philanthropy Officers
Against a vibrant backdrop at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, nearly 100 women came together on April 27 for the annual Women’s Philanthropy (WP) Installation Celebration. In an elegant morning chaired by Gail Greenspoon, with joy, laughter and tears they remembered their year together, as they looked to the year ahead.
Judi Schuman, Eydie Holz
Among the highlights, Rani Garfinkle shared her powerful experience from a recent mission to France, and Robin Siegal spoke of her transformative year in Chapter Two. Lion of Judah Vice Chair Eydie Holz received the Dorothy Seaman Leadership Award for her outstanding work as a leader and philanthropist. A ceremony of installation and rededication was led by Immediate Past Chair Emily Grabelsky.
Adele Lebersfeld, Marjorie Marlowe, Barbara Werner, Helena Levine
Noting “48 new Lions, 7 new LOJEs, 28 new Pomegranates and many new friendships,” and urging the women to do even more, Judi Schuman reflected on her first year as WP Chair as “a most wonderful season of togetherness and hard work.”
Larry Katz, Wells Fargo; Gail Greenspoon
“We are building community every day, and inviting women to join us whenever they can and however they’d like – whatever their stage of life or resources.” -April Leavy Women’s Campaign Chair
Rising to hands-on Social Action, WP board members enjoyed songs and companionship with many Holocaust survivors at the JFS Nosh & Nachas programs. And teaming up with PJ Library® moms and grandmas, our women raced through the aisles at Winn Dixie at two winwin Supermarket Sweep “foodraisers” for the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS.
Our Lions took on New York at the biennial International Lion of Judah Conference, learning, bonding and celebrating Anne Jacobson, our Kipnis-Wilson Friedland honoree. Then, nearly 300 women across generations started the year inspired and motivated at the Season Opener – The Power of One, with Jeannie Opdyke Smith the daughter of a renowned Righteous Gentile, and speakers from Federation’s overseas agencies.
“Women’s Philanthropy is growing stronger, younger, and more vital every day. The energy we’ve captured is palpable, and our path forward looks vibrant and promising. We are a force with momentum, passion and the power of effective action.” -Judi Schuman, Women’s Philanthropy Chair
Chapter Two launched its inaugural “class” of women at a new point in their lives. Growing together and deeply motivated, they learned about our community, our people, our philanthropic landscape and some keys to future leadership roles. A new class will begin next fall.
“Our educational and social programming throughout the year features great speakers and important topics, not to mention a host of volunteer activities. Women can participate in exciting activities and make new friends while giving back to those in need.” -Eydie Holz, Vice Chair, Lion of Judah
Positively Pomegranate brought women at this donor level to the Griffin Gallery with Jane Weitzman, a Jewish philanthropist and the woman behind one of the world’s most successful shoe brands.
Dina Burg, Allyson Kroner, Alicia Spero, April Leavy, Joan Hauser, Robin Siegal, Barbara Lushan, Tracy Kawa, Lynda Gillinov
Jane Weitzman, Judith Beiner, Joan Hauser
“Our common thread is ‘tikkun olam,’ repairing our Jewish community both locally and globally. We have great knowledge from our past and women of action in the present. Like a family, we are a bridge to the future. Join us on our journey!” -Barbara Lewin, Vice Chair, Planned Giving and Endowments
Two riveting guest speakers at the Lion of Judah Luncheon received standing ovations. Julie Goldwasser spoke of Federation’s profound support throughout her toddler son’s cancer diagnosis and treatment. Then, Linor Abargil shared her journey from being crowned Miss Israel to a brutal rape, to becoming Miss World and, subsequently, an attorney, anti-rape activist, wife and mother. Elaine Roberts, Linor Abargil, Jill Rose, Barbara Lewin

YOUNG ADULT DIVISION (YAD)
Young Adults Give Back in Social Action Federation’s Young Adult Division headed to the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS in Delray Beach for the YAD Gives Back social action project. Attendees had the opportunity to give back to the community and help those less fortunate. Several dozen young adults in their 20s to early 40s brought food to donate, and spent the evening making sandwiches and preparing food packages for those in need. They also enjoyed drinks and snacks, spending time
together, making new friends - and learning more about YAD from Emily Einhorn, and about the Food Pantry from Shari Waknin, JFS Vice President of Programs. Be sure to follow YAD on Facebook facebook.com/youngadultdivision for upcoming events, photos and news! To learn more about YAD, contact Brian Sarran at 561.852.3165 or brians@bocafed.org.
Comedy Night Live Shows YAD is No Laughing Matter! Nearly 300 young adults spent Saturday night, June 3, enjoying the hilarity of Dan Ahdoot, tunes by DJ Nic, and mingling with YAD friends old and new. The event’s CoChairs, Marissa Gart and Robert Weingard, kicked the program off enthusiastically, discussing why they are proud to be a part of the Young Adult Division and the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Rabbi Josh Broide, Federation’s Director of Community Engagement, passionately shared the importance of giving at a young age and the vital work of the Federation, which helped raise over $5,000 on the spot! “What a night!” said Rabbi Broide after the event. “In spite of all the polls and statistics that say the younger generation isn’t interested in Jewish communal life, almost everyone at Comedy Night sealed a pledge card with a commitment to aid the Jewish community and our people. They are the next generation that is going to make an impact. It was the most successful appeal we have seen with this age group.” The evening was capped off by a hysterical performance by Dan Ahdoot, who closed to a standing ovation. Audience members will be sure to catch Dan’s new show, Dan Derailed, this fall on Fox! CHAILIFE 30

Women Go Business Casual for Networking, Fun and Learning Entrepreneurial and professional Jewish women of all ages just keep redefining “Business Casual” in South Palm Beach County with Federation’s B&P Division. For two years, a steadily growing number of these dynamic multi-taskers have been building personal, professional and community relationships while learning and enjoying evenings together in creative, informal settings. They’ve also discovered the rewards of being involved with and contributing to Federation as an organization that does so much for our Jewish community and far beyond. During the 2014-15 season chaired by Tracy Kawa and Stephanie Midler, they rolled sushi at Asia, practiced their swings at the Golf Academy, made hamantaschen and Purim baskets at Premium Kitchens, and enjoyed a spa night at FACES365. Their earlier explorations also included baking challah and designing their own seder plates while exploring the holidays. Answering Anti-Israel Challenges and Anti-Semitism on Campus
O
ne has only to follow the mainstream news to know that anti-Israel activities and anti-Semitic incidents are increasing alarmingly on American college campuses - from the Ivy League to state universities to liberal arts colleges and more. Looking more closely, ADL has reported a 38% increase in anti-Israel events during the 2014-15 academic year, and a near doubling of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns. Amid this growing concern, a number of local residents began reaching out to our Federation. They wanted to be sure their teenaged children and grandchildren would be prepared to anticipate and effectively address antiSemitism and anti-Israel hostility and falsehoods.
Pro-Activity at Local Colleges Fortunately, our Federation, its Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), ADL and other advocacy organizations have worked proactively over the years with Florida Atlantic University and other local colleges to foster secure, nurturing Jewish campus life. FAU is ready, willing and able to address campus discourse that crosses the line into anti-Semitic hate speech. The Federation has also long supported Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach as well as Hillel-Florida, through which students engage in enriched Jewish programming including Israel advocacy training and activities. Our funding enables the presence of a JAFI Israel Fellow with Hillel on local campuses to familiarize and educate students about Israel and empower them to stand up for the Jewish state. Our support for Birthright also prepares young adults for pro-Israel efforts.
Raina Goldberg, Executive Director of Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach reports that Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a group prominent in the BDS movement at many schools, has a small following without significance at FAU. She finds the students she encounters on local campuses “proud to be Jewish and to support Israel.” While SJP still has a negative presence, she explains that they are not growing or vital. “On the other hand,” says Goldberg, “Hillel participants are positive, informative, knowledgeable - never arguing and extraordinarily active in sharing their knowledge, love and enthusiasm for Israel on the breezeway every week and in many creative programs. Friendly and approachable, they make learning about Israel fun. They’re making a difference and their influence is growing.” Tara Levy, an FAU senior active with Hillel agrees, “As the leaders of tomorrow, we are changing how people see Israel. We’re learning how to articulate real information and our feelings and passions in ways that are positive.”
Preparing Our High School Students Many of the students in our area’s public and private high schools leave our heavily Jewish and pro-Israel community for campuses throughout Florida and the U.S. This calls us to prepare them for what they experience on campuses throughout the country. Our Federation and its Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation have been supporting Israel advocacy preparation for high school students through an array of groups including JerusalemU, Stand With Us, March of the Living, Israel Action Network, BBYO, JSC, NCSY, schools and synagogues.

This year, when our JCRC Director, Stuart Silver, Goldberg, and JerusalemU Managing Partner Matt Weisbaum were approached to join in an adult presentation, they quickly developed a program. It was so well-received that, with talking points sharpened and interest growing, they’ve continued speaking together at public libraries, country clubs, private homes and senior centers.
Noam Tansman, a junior at Claire and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt High School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy believes “it’s important to learn about Israel advocacy now because we’re bound to be faced with those who wish nothing more than to be rid of Israel. History shows it’s vital to know the facts and learn how to advocate on behalf of our people and our homeland.”
But increasing anti-Israel and anti-Semitic campus activity and the groundswell of local concern made clear that it’s time for us to intensify our collective efforts.
“We need young people prepared to step up, speak out and act,” says Jill Rose, JCRC Co-Chair. “The first step is awareness; the second step is a community-wide effort to address the problem. We’re on our way.”
“The community wants us to be proactive in making sure that our Jewish children have comfort and confidence in a wide range of situations regarding Israel and Jewish identity,” says Silver. “Our goal is to develop a comprehensive approach to providing young people with accurate information and resources to advocate on Israel’s behalf and to refute unfounded accusations.” In 2012, our Federation began partnering with the internationally acclaimed JerusalemU to provide educational resources for young people about their Jewish identity and Israel through local groups at no cost. The organization creates curricula and lesson plans for teens, college students & adults, and is most known for its feature films Beneath The Helmet, Israel Inside and Crossing the Line 2, a recently updated film about anti-Israel activities and anti-Semitism on college campuses. “We can no longer expect that our kids will naturally be pro-Israel, so we have to be more proactive in engaging and educating them,” says Weisbaum. “Our films are engaging and thought-provoking, sparking a lot of dialogue. So many young people don’t realize the extent of the issues, or have the knowledge and confidence to speak up about them.”
The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement is a global weapon to delegitimize, isolate and punish Israel through economic and political pressure. BDS works to target and manipulate influential entities and the public toward grassroots action against Israel in academic, commercial, social and cultural areas. Here are some of the recent pro-BDS activities on campuses across the United States: Israel divestment resolutions passed by student governments Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) petitions Residence halls and fraternity houses vandalized by swastikas and warnings Apartheid Walls and Mock Evictions Moves to ban Israeli products Protests of recruitment for Birthright Israel Israel Apartheid weeks
JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION The Critical Role of Unrestricted Endowment In today’s world, we have a lot of choices. With over 300 channels to watch on cable, a myriad of coffee variations at Starbucks or the dizzying number of apps available for our phones, it can feel like we’re living a customized life. In fact, many donors choose to invest in the community through the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation because we offer a customized approach to philanthropy. At the same time, our Foundation’s Unrestricted Funds play a critical role in the health of our community. During the recent economic uncertainty, funds from our Unrestricted Endowment prevented the insolvency of two of our community agencies. It has been there to provide monies in recent years for two Israel Emergency Campaigns. More recently, the Foundation’s Unrestricted Funds provided a large grant to safeguard the Jews of Ukraine and, closer to home, we made a grant to the Jewish community in Houston to help them deal with the results of recent flooding. With unrestricted assets approaching $14 million, the Foundation follows a conservative spending policy which ensures that these critical funds continue to grow. Each year, 4% of the Unrestricted Funds flow to the Federation’s Annual Campaign and are allocated to the crucial programs and services provided by our Federation. So while Foundation will always provide customized philanthropic solutions for our donors, giving to the Unrestricted Fund also ensures a lasting Jewish impact to meet both the expected and the unexpected needs of our community.

A modest lifestyle. A powerful legacy. Century Village resident Irving Eckhardt leaves JJCF its largest unrestricted bequest He dressed modestly, traveled infrequently, drove an 11-year-old Honda and lived at Century Village. Yet Irving Eckhardt, who passed away at 91 last September, left the largest unrestricted bequest ever given to our Federation’s Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF). He also left generous bequests to Federation beneficiary agencies including the Levis JCC, JARC and JAFCO, as well as other Jewish organizations in Florida, Connecticut and Israel. Longtime friend Sydney Savelle of Boca Raton describes Eckhardt as “an extremely nice, honorable and good man with very simple pleasures. He wasn’t into material things, and accumulated wealth over his lifetime with some quality stock choices. In the end, had a lot to give.” Savelle says that a few years after permanently moving to Boca Raton, Eckhardt began asking him, and his wife Betsy, about local Jewish charities and the work they do. “I took him around the community for agency visits, to meet some of the beneficiaries. I also introduced him to my estate attorney, Mark Schaum.” Schaum says that Eckhardt, “...was an attractive, affable man who flew under the radar. You wouldn’t think that he had much money. He told me that some people thought he needed psychological help for living so modestly, and explained that if he felt he was denying himself, they’d be right— but he never felt that way. He had no interest in impressing anyone. When he met Sylvia Altman, who became a dear friend, I jokingly told him he’d started dressing better.” Schaum, a member of the JJCF’s Mitzvah Society and Professional Advisory Committee (PAC), says Eckhardt took his time to consider his charitable options and asked a lot of questions. “He was interested only in Jewish charities and in deciding on a fair amount for each organization,” said Schaum. “He decided it was a good idea to split the sizeable remainder of his estate between our Federation, and the New Haven Federation, where he established a fund in honor of his parents, Nathan and Ida.” Elyssa Kupferberg, a JJCF Vice Chair, PAC and Mitzvah Society member, and Wealth Manager to Eckhardt, says, “Irving Eckhardt was a true mensch who left a legacy to two Federation communities. His gifts will impact future generations for years to come.” “Irving Eckhardt left a way for the community to remember him forever— by creating a lasting Jewish legacy,” reflects Matthew C. Levin, Federation President & CEO. “Now and far into the future, his great vision and generosity will further Jewish interests and benefit so many Jewish people who will never know this modest man.”
JJCF’s “Create a Jewish Legacy” Brings $8.6 million in Commitments for Community in Three Months
T
he Create a Jewish Legacy program at the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation, in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s LIFE & LEGACY initiative, has brought in $8.6 million in legacy commitments since the program officially started collecting declarations of intent in February, 2015. Volunteer teams from 15 CJL local organizations have been busy talking to dedicated supporters about how they envision this community in generations to come. Those legacy conversations have paid off in the form of almost 60 legacy commitments from 50 individual donors in just three months. The South Palm Beach County Jewish community was chosen to participate in the LIFE & LEGACY initiative in August, 2014. The 4-year program, which provides training, support, and incentive grants to participating organizations, aims to assist communities in promoting after-lifetime giving to benefit local Jewish organizations. Create a Jewish Legacy partners in South Palm Beach County have taken part in four educational events in the past six months, with four more, including a community-wide celebration, slated for the coming year. CBIZ is the corporate sponsor of the local “Create a Jewish Legacy” initiative.

PAC Powers Up with Impact Israel Mission “Visiting a Moshav community bordering Gaza, where the Iron Dome only provides a 3-second warning for an incoming missile, their daily plight became a reality to us.” -Larry Blair
When members of our JJCF Professional Advisory Committee returned from PAC’s recent Israel mission, by all accounts the trip had lived up to its promise of something to stir every soul. Their timing meant that they even experienced the power of Israel’s Memorial and Independence Days like sabras. And, of course, the special PAC camaraderie resonated throughout the week. Co-chaired by Larry Blair and Matt Kutcher, the mission took this committed group of estate and trust attorneys, financial wealth advisors, accountants and insurance professionals through an ambitious itinerary. From first-time to seasoned Israel visitors, together they experienced it all, from Israel’s history and holy sites to an eye on its future with cuttingedge technology and briefings from top experts and officials. From military bases on the Gaza border to Shabbat at the Kotel. From outdoor adventures to seeing our community’s dollars in action. From ziplines to tunnels to dancing in the streets on Israel Independence Day. From forging bonds with our Sister City, Kiryat Bialik, to reflecting on their powerful, growing sense of belonging and commitment to our community and our people. It was no surprise they returned home deeply moved, thoroughly energized and even more ready to make a difference.

JWF Announces $125,000 in Grants at Reception with Israeli Fashion House Leader The Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF) of South Palm Beach County announced their allocation of $125,000 in 2015 grant awards at their annual Granting Wishes Cocktail Reception on March 11, 2015 at Boca Rio Golf Club. Nearly 175 guests gathered for the inspiring announcement, and to share a remarkable opportunity to hear Sharon Tal, Head Designer of Maskit – The Israeli Fashion House. Maskit was founded in 1945 by Ruth Dayan to empower impoverished women immigrants by employing them to design and produce authentic art and crafts. Both new and prized vintage Maskit fashions were on display in the U.S premiere of the revived couture brand. In little more than a decade, our local JWF has awarded more than $986,000 to fund programs that exponentially raise Jewish women’s and children’s abilities, education and independence locally and globally, in categories including education, health and abuse prevention and economic security. These dollars are all donations from the JWF donors, called Trustees.

Strengthening “Family” in Israel with Our Sister City Since 2002, our community has been creating an everstrengthening multigenerational “family” in Kiryat Bialik, our Federation’s Sister City north of Haifa in Israel. Through
Partnership 2Gether (P2G), we’ve been building living bridges among residents and institutions to enhance both communities. Here are just a few very recent examples:
Women’s Exchange Spins for Special Needs
A Special March of the Living Visit
Our latest P2G Women’s Exchange filled every bike at Flywheel Sports to raise funds for the special needs program at Ort Bialik High School, a project shared with their KB sisters.
On their Israel leg, this year’s March contingent got to know students at ORT Bialik High School, enjoyed a concert with a world-traveling special needs student chorus, and sent wishes for Israel and the Jewish people aloft with balloons.

PAC Renews Relationships
Congregation B’nai Israel students met peers from KB in New York City for a Jewish Heritage trip, then hosted them at home. More CBI teens who stayed with new KB friends in Israel will reunite with them in Washington, DC and Florida.
On their Israel Mission, PAC members visited KB program sites and enjoyed time with friends old and new in their homes.
JFS Social Workers Welcomed in KB Two JFS lead social workers were welcomed like family in KB for a P2G professional exchange to visit programs for seniors, children and families, and to share expertise.

With banners proclaiming their purpose, 250 walked half a mile in solidarity from Boca Raton Christian School to Temple Beth El. At the temple, more than 500 joined in a deeply moving ceremony featuring survivors, children from participating synagogues and churches, local Jewish and Christian clergy, other dignitaries and world class music from
violinist Gil Morgenstern along with Cantorial Soloist Michelle Auslander Cohen. The 2015 March of Remembrance was a regional, collaborative effort uniting the Southeast Florida community through churches, synagogues and community groups. Planning for the event included, among others, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and its Jewish Community Relations Council, Victory Church, Boca Raton Interfaith Clergy Association, Boca Raton Christian School, Temple Beth El of Boca Raton, and The Flame Society.

JCRC Brings Lessons from Holocaust to High Schools Earlier this year, our JCRC once again brought together powerful Holocaust Education assemblies at Boca Raton Community, Olympic Heights and Spanish River high schools. More than 2,300 students heard from and had interactive discussions with survivors, and educators including Dr. Rose Gatens, Director of the Center for Holocaust & Human Rights Education (CHHRE) at FAU, a Federation beneficiary. The programs demonstrated the significance and lessons of the Shoah toward sensitizing a new generation to the depths to which hatred and bigotry can fall. Planning for a third year of assemblies is underway. CHAILIFE 44

March of the Living Makes Impact in Poland and Israel for Local Teens and Adults After months of preparation, a record 80 of our high school students boarded an airplane to Poland for the 2015 March of the Living, the capstone of this remarkable Holocaust education program. And 34 additional Marchers embarked from our community on their parallel 5-star Adult Bus trip, intersecting with the teens at powerful points along the way. With local Holocaust survivors, rabbis and educators, they traveled the depths of the Holocaust in camps, ghettos and remnants of once thriving Jewish communities in Poland. They observed Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Remembrance Day on the iconic annual March of the Living from Auschwitz to Birkenau with more than 12,000 cohorts
from more than 45 countries. From the ashes, they went on to discover the wonders of our modern State of Israel, celebrating Yom HaZikaron/Israel Independence Day with a jubilant march through the streets. After two weeks, both students and adults returned deeply bonded to each other and the Jewish people, prepared to bear witness to the Shoah and ready to ensure that “Never Again” remains more than a slogan far into the future. Recruitment for next May’s 2016 March of the Living is underway for teens and adults. For more information, visit molsouth.org, email mol@bocafed.org, or call 561.852.6013.
“Far from Boca Raton, I saw we are a tiny part of the world’s population, facing too much anti-Semitism. I also saw that we endured the toughest hardships, yet we never give up. The March helps us grow into willing, determined warriors who will fight for Israel and our people in college and far beyond. Am Yisrael Chai!” -local teen “I never wanted to go back to Poland, but I am so glad I did. It was such an emotional experience and I made such friends among the young people. Every Jewish child should go on this trip. It will change their lives.” -Genia Kutner, age 86, Holocaust survivor traveling with our teens “On this deepest and most meaningful journey, we saw the very worst of what was done to our people, and their resilience. We are heartened that the newest generation will bear witness to atrocities of the past and know we continue to survive and thrive.” -Howard and Lynne Halpern, Adult Bus travelers
“Returning from the March, my daughter told us she’s ‘never before felt so close to Judaism and so much love for Israel.’ She will carry this throughout her life, and surely further our Jewish family.” -parent of a local teen 45 CHAILIFE

Israel Comes to Federation Campus for Yom HaAtzmaut Dedication Plaza at the center of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County campus was a joyous sea of blue and white on April 23, in celebration of the 67th anniversary of Israel’s statehood. The Federation and Donna Klein Jewish Academy collaborated on a program of professionally-led Israeli folk dancing with Silvio Berlfein of Horah Entertainment. Throughout the day, DKJA and Zale Early Childhood Center classes paraded and danced, cheered on by residents of JARC and Gould and Weinberg senior housing, parents, employees of the many entities on the Federation campus, DKJA’s Claire and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt High School students and campus visitors.
FAU Professor Helps Our Teachers Combat CyberbullYing Dr. Sameer Hinduja, Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at FAU and Co-Director of the Cyberbullying Research Center, led 65 local day school and congregational school educators in a program to better understand and develop an action plan to address cyberbullying and unsafe social networking. He provided a wealth of information including legal principles, and clarity on intervention when incidents originate offcampus. A member of the Research Advisory Board for Harvard University’s Internet Safety Task Force, Dr. Hinduja stressed that it takes a coordinated effort to shape and enhance the existing social and relational climate across a school to improve attitudes and behaviors. The teachers used cell phones to answer key questions in real-time interactive lessons.

DAY SCHOOLS Donna Klein Jewish Academy (DKJA) • 561.852.3300 • www.dkja.org DKJA recently joined more than 100 Jewish high school students from across North America in Los Angeles, California to compete in the 2015/5775 RAVSAK Moot Beit Din. The Claire and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt High School at DKJA team, led by Asher Gritz, Macayla Gritz, Dana Lipson, and Abraham Waserstein with the support of their advisor Rabbi Baruch Plotkin and teacher Lydia Zafrir, earned second place in the Brandeis division. dimensions of Jewish law through creative engagement with contemporary situations. Each team of students prepared a written decision and presented an oral argument before a panel of rabbis, scholars, and lawyers, in response to a case. This year’s case focused on social media, Internet privacy, and communication ethics. Examining Jewish legal perspectives on privacy and Lashon Harah (derogatory speech), each Moot Beit Din team responded to the question: Does a school administrator have the right to suspend a student based on information acquired from the app SnapChat?

Distribution Committee (JDC) travelled with a small JFNA delegation to visit affected families and individuals including those displaced from their homes. Amid “dire challenges evident everywhere,” they witnessed Federation’s two international partners – the JDC and the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) – working tirelessly. Cities in eastern Ukraine have become combat zones with bombed out homes, businesses closed and incomes cut off. Jews in Donetsk, Lugansk and the surrounding areas have either fled the region or remain trapped, cut off from the rest of the country. Unable to leave their war-torn areas where food, water, fuel, medicine and other necessities are increasingly scarce, thousands of vulnerable Jewish children, families and the elderly depend on our partners, whose perseverance risks their personal safety – and on our compassion and generosity. Some are attempting to resettle in safer parts of Ukraine, leaving belongings and often loved ones behind. For the first time since the aftermath of World War II, Jews in Europe are displaced. Amid disorientation and grief, they try to subsist with little or no income. Our partners are there, helping with necessities like housing, senior care, activities for children, and preparation for aliyah for those seeking new lives in Israel. “Our home visits amid such great needs, limited resources and uncertainty were unsettling and upsetting,” says Etta. “People are shattered, disbelieving, and struggling to find hope and stamina. But our Federation partners are working 24/7, afraid to rest and committed to bringing each and every Jew compassionate care and dignity. They are the brightness in a region where hope is scarce.” Our Federation has always been committed to providing a safety net for the most vulnerable Jews in the world – no matter where they live. During this multi-year crisis, Federations across North America have raised an additional nearly $5 million to help our partners provide vital aid to Ukrainian Jewish communities. But far more help is and will continue to be needed.
