WELCOME TO CHAI LIFE FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH In these final weeks of my three-year tenure as Chair of our Federation’s Board of Directors, I want to take this opportunity to share my overwhelming gratitude and pride. It has been my true honor and privilege to lead this remarkable community alongside such talented, dedicated lay and professional colleagues, and I am filled with pride at all we have accomplished together. Our Federation today is not only enduring – with unprecedented breadth, we are thriving, growing and fully prepared to take our vibrant, diverse Jewish community from strength to strength into the future. As many of you will remember, I stepped into this office in April 2011 at a time of extended transition in our Federation’s professional leadership as well as continuing challenges within the overall economic climate. I established an office at the Federation, attended meetings and events and, Blackberry in hand 24/7, immersed myself in ensuring that the face of our Federation and our Jewish community would remain solid and stable. In the process, I strengthened dear friendships and formed wonderful new ones for whom the wellbeing of our community and our people is of the highest priority. Setting a standard of commitment, we knew that together we would weather the transition with perseverance and dignity, poised for future success. And, with a diligent CEO search of more than a year, led by Raymond Zimmerman, we accomplished all we had hoped for and more. A true highlight of the past 18 months as Chair has been working with and watching the strides being made with our President and CEO, Matt Levin. Strong, confident, skilled and wise, visionary about our community’s unparalleled potential while cognizant of our accomplishments and challenges, Matt joined our Federation ready to lead us to greater strengths and achievements. You can feel the transformative revitalization here in our Jewish community. It’s all around us, at our events and meetings; in our increased Annual Campaign and endowments; from the engagement of our young leaders to the honoring of our longtime supporters; through our growing affinities and partnerships among agencies, synagogues and beyond; and, most essentially, in our expanding ability to meet and plan for the vital needs of our Jewish family. How thrilled I am to look around at how far we’ve come, and how grateful I am to have had this opportunity to help galvanize our Federation at such an important juncture. I look forward to working with our Federation’s leaders in their new tenures, and with all facets of our community in new capacities.

Nourishing neighbors one meal at a time… Sylvia, 97, lives on her own in Delray Beach. With poor mobility and minimal vision, she struggled to maintain her independence. Living on a limited Social Security income, she also could not afford to keep a balanced kosher diet, nor did she have the strength to grocery shop. Enter the Ruth and Norman Rales Jewish Family Services Meals on Wheels program, with support from the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Last August, JFS Meals on Wheels began delivering ample, delicious kosher meals to Boca Raton and Delray Beach seniors, providing nourishment and hope for Sylvia and others like her. Some, like Sylvia, qualify for a financial subsidy and pay $3.50 or nothing per meal, while those able to afford full price pay $7.00. Specially prepared for seniors’ tastes and dietary needs, the food is prepared by residents and professionals at the Jewish Association for Residential Care (JARC) and delivered to clients’ homes each Friday by friendly volunteers. “Words can’t describe how much Meals on Wheels improved my life. I couldn’t prepare meals on my own or afford the food,” says Sylvia. “Now, every Friday, I look forward to the delivery of my delicious kosher meals. They put everything
right in my fridge for me. I love the variety, too - chicken, tilapia, meatballs, dairy... everything is so good. I am so very thankful for Meals on Wheels.”
Igniting the passion for our homeland... FAU student Matthew, 19, of Boca Raton has a new nickname -“chamud”- which is Hebrew for “sweetie.” That moniker was bestowed upon him by Lital Pendler, the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) Fellow at Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach, in light of Matthew’s enthusiastic commitment to Israel programming on campus and beyond. A Tel Aviv native, Lital has created activities and events that expose students to Israeli life and culture. She enthuses, “It’s so rewarding to see students like Matthew get involved with Israel-themed programs. We’ve held culinary events, Israeli movie nights, discussions, photography exhibitions, music events and socials so students can discover their personal connection to Israel.” Birthright Israel inspired Matthew to further build his commitment to Israel and bring his passion back home to his peers. Matthew has been a catalyst for others to learn about Israel and also participate in the highly successful Blue and White Party held in January.
Adam, a recent graduate of the Hadracha College Initiative, explains, “As a counselor, you ‘own’ your Judaism. You have more opportunity to learn about it and pass on that excitement to others.”
Lital says, “My goal is to enhance the Israeli experience for students so that they can have their own personal relationships with our homeland.”
CHAILIFE 6
“Lital encouraged me to go on Birthright, which was lifechanging. After I came home, I felt 100% connected to Israel and wanted to take an even more involved role on campus to share that connection. Lital offered me leadership opportunities that allow me to make a difference,” Matthew acknowledges. “I can’t wait to go back, and I’ve been encouraging all of my friends and acquaintances to discover Israel for themselves.” Federation supports Hillel’s Israel programming, including the JAFI Fellowship that brought Lital to our community, as well as Birthright. Lital says, “My goal is to enhance the Israeli experience for students so that they can have their own personal relationships with our homeland.”
Building Jewish identity around the campfire… Growing up in secular families in the Czech Republic, Sara, 19, and Adam, 22, had little exposure to Judaism. But spending summers as campers at the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) Camp Szarvas, they grew connected to their Jewish heritage and looked forward to the day they could become counselors. Through a Jewish leadership program, Hadracha Madrichim sponsored by JDC and supported by our Federation, Adam and Sara’s dream came true. They were
trained to become counselors in the Czech Republic, using a specialized curriculum about Judaism and leadership. Adam, a recent graduate of the Hadracha College Initiative, explains, “As a counselor, you ‘own’ your Judaism. You have more opportunity to learn about it and pass on that excitement to others.” The discovery of their Jewish identities led several of the counselors-in-training to bring their love for Jewish tradition and customs back to their families and secular communities. These pioneering young Jewish leaders recently held a Kabbalat Shabbat experience at a hotel in the Czech Republic that likely hadn’t seen a Jewish ceremony in 70 years. They created and led the service, baked challah, lit Shabbat candles, gave drasha (Torah commentary), and created a moving and memorable experience for all. Sara, now in the Hadracha collegiate program, says, “Every summer at Szarvas was special. I loved and admired each of my counselors, and it was my dream that one day my campers would feel that way about me. I want to stay part of it and share my excitement about Judaism with my campers.” JDC’s most recent counselor training in the Czech Republic was held last October with a record number of local young Jewish leaders.
“Words can’t describe how much Meals on Wheels improved my life. I couldn’t prepare meals on my own or afford the food,” says Sylvia.

Breaking Ground for the Future
I
t was a glorious morning when more than 400 people gathered on a field on the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County campus on January 28, 2014. Surrounded by local rabbis, government officials, Federation and beneficiary agency leaders and building partners under an elegantly decorated tent, 200 future residents celebrated their homecoming with the official groundbreaking for Sinai Residences of Boca Raton. The ceremony also marked a momentous occasion for the Federation and our entire Jewish community. “Sinai Residences of Boca Raton is the most significant building project for our Federation since we opened our original buildings on this campus 25 years ago,” said Matthew C. Levin, Federation President and CEO. “This is yet one more historic indication of the remarkable renaissance we are experiencing in our Federation and our Jewish community.”
9 CHAILIFE
With Sinai Residences, the Federation campus will be home to South Florida’s newest planned Life Care community, a 22-acre, $250 million development west of Boca Raton. Over 85% of the 237 luxury apartment homes have already been reserved, and we look forward to our new neighbors unpacking in 2015. “The creation of Sinai Residences will enable the Federation’s unused land to generate revenue that will help fulfill our vital mission of caring for our community and our people, while the project itself serves the needs of our area’s growing senior population,” said Levin. “Of course, a project of this magnitude was developed through careful analysis and planning over many years,” said Mel Lowell, Federation’s COO who has been integrally involved since its inception. “In 2007, Federation leadership began researching how to best utilize our vacant land. After engaging external experts for a feasibility study of the land and our local population, and conducting thorough due diligence, it was determined that a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) would be an ideal direction for the Federation.” Simultaneously, after completing the Federation’s comprehensive senior services study, lay and professional leadership recognized the unmistakable need for a Jewish environment where local seniors could comfortably and happily reside – with the best in care, unsurpassed programming and a strong sense of community. “Sinai Residences is all of that and more,” said Levin. “Like our Federation, Sinai Residences will care for people today and tomorrow. With today’s cost of care, this is a way for seniors to really ensure their future.” As a planned Life Care community, Sinai Residences guarantees residents access, from the moment of move-in if needed, to a full continuum of the highest quality care, at a predictable monthly
cost and with refundable entry-fee options. In addition to the independent living residences, the on-site continuum of care will include 132 suites for additional stages of care. Sinai Residences will offer the highest standard of engaged senior living. The full array of luxury services and amenities will include hospitality, recreational and social services, cultural and academic pursuits, as well as fitness programs, and gourmet dining with a kosher option available. Sinai residents will also enjoy front-row access to the wealth of activities on the Federation’s campus. After years of thoughtful planning, it’s exciting to see all the pieces finally come together,” said Wesley E. Finch, a Vice Chair of Federation and President of Federation CCRC Development, LLC that is governing and developing the project. “Upon completion, Sinai Residences of Boca Raton will be the centerpiece of our campus. We are creating an environment that is attracting the active, future residents who will become a vital part of our vibrant community.” Jerry and Eleanor Schlakman, who currently live in Boca West Country Club but will move to the Sinai Residences upon its completion, agreed. “Sinai Residences of Boca Raton provides the ‘three C’s’ that we need at this stage in our lives: comfort, care and community,” said Jerry. “We are thrilled to find a community like Sinai Residences being built just around the corner from where we live now and in an area of which we think so highly.” Beyond the three Cs, Sinai Residences offers a unique opportunity to live within a multigenerational Jewish community surrounded by educational programs, cultural opportunities and children of all ages. “Sinai Residences will provide a maintenance-free lifestyle designed for seniors who continue to pursue life with vigor,” said Amy Linder, Director of Marketing for Sinai Residences. “So far that is certainly what we have seen in our future residents.”

PROFILES IN GIVING
Wesley Finch: A Remarkable Federation Asset
I
t’s a beautiful thing when one’s professional and philanthropic lives collide. And that’s exactly what happened for Wes Finch, Founder (1981) and Chairman of The Finch Group, in 2006 when he was asked to join the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Budgeting and Finance Committee. Wes has been involved in over $2 billion of primarily real estate oriented ventures over the years, ranging from government-assisted housing to high end condominiums at prices up to $3 million. And this rich and impressive three decades-plus in real estate development and management couldn’t have better prepared him for his Federation journey ahead – including his visible role as President of the Board of Managers of Federation CCRC Development, LLC, the Federation subsidiary now developing Sinai Residences of Boca Raton. Farther behind the Federation scenes, this remarkable volunteer has served as President of the Jewish Community Facilities Corp. (which owns and manages the entire 100-acre Federation campus) since 2010, and Treasurer for both the Federation CCRC Property Corp. and Operations Corp. Wes has also served on the Federation Board since 2009, and as a Vice Chair since 2010. After joining the Budgeting and Finance Committee and reviewing the Federation’s assets, Wes immediately saw an opportunity to “monetize” some unused Federation land, netting the Federation over $7 million to date. He understood the importance of a project that could fill a critical local need while bringing a significant financial return to the Federation for decades to come. “We have one of the largest populations of Jewish seniors in the country right here in South Palm Beach County,” Wes said. “As I watched my own mother live to be 96, with her last 18 years in a CCRC where she was comfortable and busy all the time, providing a high quality environment for seniors became a goal of mine. We spent countless hours exploring ways we could meet this growing population’s needs for quality housing in a safe, secure, Jewish environment.” After the LLC Managers’ extensive research on other CCRC projects around the country and significant due diligence, they made the final decision to turn part of the Federation campus into the Sinai Residences. Seven years and thousands of volunteer hours later, that vision has become a reality. The Sinai Residences at Boca Raton celebrated its groundbreaking on January 28, 2014. “It’s rare that an organization can have a committed lay leader with great expertise in an area of such primary concern,” said Mel Lowell, Federation COO and Board of Managers Treasurer. “Wes has tremendous national credibility, both personally and through his business success, that match remarkably with our needs and our land.” Mr. Finch credits the success of the CCRC to his colleagues on the CCRC Board. Wes’s gift of time, knowledge and commitment to the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and his role in envisioning, developing and executing this Sinai Residences project will not be soon forgotten. “Wes is a truly benevolent individual dedicating endless hours to the CCRC, the Federation and the South Palm Beach County community,” added Lowell. “His understanding of the development process and his commitment and dedication to this project are truly unmatched.”

TAKING OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP TO THE NEXT LEVEL After careful preparation, our Federation has just launched the first Jewish Community Leadership Institute (JCLI) with 22 participants from Federation and other Jewish groups. This vital investment in our community is chaired by Carol Smokler and Thomas O. Katz, with sponsorship and underwriting by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. JCLI’s goals are to prepare leaders to excel in their positions and to foster collaboration and partnership among our local Jewish organizations. The first three sessions include, in sequence: Models of Leadership, presented by Rabbi Lauren Berkun of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America; Insights into Jewish Values, with Rabbi Irwin Kula of CLAL - the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, joined by Tom Katz; and Reaching the Jewish Community of the 21st Century: A Leadership Workshop, with Rabbi Sid Schwarz of the Clergy Leadership Incubator Program. We look forward to sharing more information and photos from this important new initiative.

CAMPAIGN From my vantage point as FRD Chair, I am privileged to see all the vibrant growth and energy of our caring Jewish community. A full 750 of you saw and felt it at THE EVENT. It was unmistakable at the groundbreaking of Sinai Residences, and among longtime donors at our Golden Gathering. Our Annual Campaign and endowments are growing, as our Marketing & Communications team’s remarkable work reaches out and resonates powerfully.
As our 2014 Annual Campaign approaches its half way mark, I could not be more optimistic. Our lay and professional leaders have been hard at work, and hundreds of our donors have attended a diverse array of inspiring events. Throughout our community, committed supporters are opening their homes for parlor meetings, bringing friends and colleagues to the Federation campus for Discovery Day tours, and sharing our important mission.
Even as I write this, we’re shaping a bright future by launching the first Jewish Community Leadership Institute to foster collaboration and help Federation and community leaders excel.
Our two new 18-month campaign initiatives launched just a few months ago are yielding great results. Aiming to add 100 new donors at $10,000+, Make a Major Difference is already counting 55 new Major Donors. Everyone Counts has added more than 300 brand new donors toward the goal of 1,000.
Our transformative November days in Israel forged incredible bonds among lay and professional leadership, synagogues and organizations on our first Jewish Community Leadership Mission. It left me with no doubt that this would be an extraordinary season. And it truly is!
Now, we are gearing up for Super Sunday, reinforcing our Federation credo that Everyone Counts. Together, we are building our community one person at a time.
May we go from strength to strength,
Thanks to all those helping in this sacred work. Anne Jacobson, Financial Resource Development Chair

KING DAVID SOCIETY GETS AN INSIDER BRIEFING ON GLOBAL JEWISH SECURITY Members of our Federation’s prestigious King David Society (KDS) got a true insider’s perspective on global Jewish security on January 28. KDS Co-chairs Larry and Diane Feldman opened their beautiful home in Boca Grove to this deeply committed group of generous philanthropists who contribute $25,000 or more to our Federation’s Annual Campaign. Following wine and hors d’oeuvres, the group heard from Josh Schwarcz, Head of Security for The Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), about an issue of compelling importance: Rescuing and Protecting Jews from Terror. Schwarcz shared details of the Toulouse, France terror attacks never made public, and security measures
taken in other countries and communities since. He also revealed covert ground operations and evacuation efforts in the most at-risk communities today. The King David Society is a community of philanthropists who share a passionate concern for issues that affect the worldwide Jewish Community, and set inspiring standards in philanthropic giving. It was a morning of inspiration, friendship, and a deeper connection to the mission of Federation as seen through the eyes of women.

THE EVENT

A SOLD OUT CROWD CELEBRATES ALL THE GOOD WE DO TOGETHER For a second year, our Jewish community came together in all its vibrant diversity with one purpose: to celebrate all the good we do together. From our synagogues, partner agencies and schools... from longtime leaders and donors… to newcomers… and multiple generations, a sold out crowd of 750 filled the Boca West Country Club with ruach at THE EVENT 2.4.2014 with guest speaker, Mandy Patinkin. Beginning with a colorful showcase of community resources, through a program highlighted by powerful personal stories, it was truly a night of revitalization and rededication amid the festivities. “Looking out from the podium,” said Federation President & CEO Matt Levin, “I saw not a sea of tables, but the faces of our rabbis, agency leaders, donors – the caring leaders, contributors, volunteers and friends whose generosity and commitment to our people make this Jewish community such a remarkable place to live, give and grow together.” And, together, we honored those for whom the good we do has made a vital difference. With gratitude, courage and joy, they came to the microphone to let us know that, together, we are truly bringing the words Feed, Protect, Teach, Inspire, Save and Comfort to life every day for our Jewish family, near and far. We also heard from new resident and donor Samy Dwek about how, after living throughout the world, he chose our extraordinary community for his family to live a vibrant, fulfilling Jewish life. Yet, unmistakably, there are far more stories of hope to be written. Thanks to THE EVENT’s dedicated leadership team of Chairs: Michele & Larry Blair, Eydie & Ira Holz, Lisa & Stephen Mendelsohn, Jennifer & Craig Zeuner; and Founding Chairs: Debra & Larry Halperin, our community is charged up and ready to meet that challenge and write that next chapter together. DOROTHY SEAMAN DEPARTMENT OF WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY Shalom! Our 2014 Annual Campaign is proving to be one of the most successful ever! I am so proud of how our Women’s Philanthropy leadership has collaborated with women throughout the community to promote meaningful, intellectually stimulating fundraising programs and opportunities for learning and discussion. In addition, our increased face-to-face, campaign-focused “Jewish Conversations” have resulted in a more successful campaign in which our women feel a true sense of pride and ownership in the difference we make for those in need right here and around the globe. As we approach Purim, it’s important to remember how every woman has the ability to make that difference. Like Queen Esther, it is by proudly supporting our Jewish community and working with those around our table that we have the strongest impact. Our Women’s Philanthropy Department shines as brightly as Queen Esther’s crown! Let’s work together to bring our 2014 Campaign Season to even greater success!

The “pride” of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County roared once again at their annual ingathering, as they celebrated their “Moments, Milestones and Miracles.” The 2014 Lion of Judah Luncheon brought more than 400 Lions together on January 15. Of all ages and from throughout the community, amid tears and laughter their roar from The Polo Club was heard throughout our community and around the world – where their dedication and generosity do so much for so many of our family in need. Inspired by the deeply personal, powerful moments shared on video by luncheon Co-chairs Monica Goldstein and Margie Marlowe, and Lion Vice Chair, April Leavy, the Lions reflected on their own turning points - when they knew in their hearts and minds that they just had to leave the sidelines and join in creating miracles. The real miracles of the afternoon came in the stories of Elinor, Alex, Isabel and Rachel. The lives of these members of our own community have been transformed by the generosity and efforts of South Palm Beach County’s nearly 800 Lions, who are so instrumental in the Federation’s work to make a vital difference. Among the milestones celebrated, the pride welcomed 42 new Lions, and eleven LOJEs who had endowed their Lion gifts since the last luncheon. With 269 LOJEs, South Palm Beach County continues to lead the nation. Three dedicated LOJEs who had passed away in the past year, but who, as Lions forever, continue to make miracles by saving and enriching lives were honored as Barbara Werner, Vice Chair, Planned Giving & Endowment, led a candle lighting ceremony for Sylvia Fried, Helen Goldband and Elaine Kofsky. The Marleen Forkas Chair of Contemporary Jewish Issues generously underwrote the featured speaker, Patti Stanger, Jewish entrepreneur, philanthropist and third-generation matchmaker best known for Bravo TV’s docu-series “The Millionaire Matchmaker.”

POSITIVELY POMEGRANATE EVENTS SHARE POWER, PASSION, PURPOSE Our Pomegranates made a splash into the community with three “Positively Pomegranate” outreach events at beautiful homes late in November. Bringing together more than 60 community-minded women for inspiring and educational gatherings, each event provided an energizing and enjoyable way to make new friends and learn more about the vital work of Federation. Each outreach featured Success Coach Karen Marcus, who shared her “Top 10 List for Living Your Best Life.” The outreach events were followed up by a morning of fashion, food and fun at Saks Fifth Avenue in Boca Raton for the annual Pomegranate Thank You Event. These women making an important difference in the world through the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County came together on January 23 for a light breakfast, made-to-order gourmet coffee, and more words of
wisdom from Karen Marcus on empowerment and feeling your best. Pomegranate Vice Chair, Kathy Green, and Event Chairs, Stephanie Midler and Debbie Weisman, welcomed the guests and introduced the Giorgio Armani Professional Team for a make-up presentation including a tutorial with the latest trends in cosmetics. The Federation’s Pomegranate giving level honors women who contribute between $1,800 to $4,999 to the Federation’s Annual Campaign. One of the seven fruits named in the Bible, the pomegranate is said to contain 613 seeds, one for each of the mitzvot or commandments found in the Torah. By wearing the Pomegranate pin, these generous women are reminded of the Jewish lives they improve, rescue and renew. But, even more, it calls to mind the work that is yet to be done.

YOUNG ADULT DIVISION (YAD) Young, Inspired & Jewish Just Like Us To our young, committed caring Jewish people: you are not alone. Yes, a friend might not join you at a YAD event the first time you ask. And thank you for passionately sharing how Federation changes and saves lives or asking for a gift – even though your coworker might not “get it” at first. But not only are you not alone here, where YAD continues to grow and thrive – there are people just like you all around the country ready to make a difference. Nearly 2,000, including four from our community, are descending on New Orleans in March for JFNA’s annual Tribefest. This sea of young Jewish humanity will be immersed in Justice and Inclusion, Faith and Culture, Jewish Life, Innovation and Leadership. After hands-on service projects by day, they’ll mingle, dine and dance at Bourbon Street-style Purim parties by night. Some will return with a newfound understanding of the Federation system’s annual commitment to our Jewish family worldwide. Some will be empowered to take on leadership roles in their local YAD. They’ll have made new friends or even found a soul mate. And they’ll know there are so many young people, just like us, working together for a bright Jewish future. B’shalom,
Bryan Drowos Chair, Young Adult Division (YAD)

“BAKE A DIFFERENCE” – THE RECIPE THAT KEEPS ON GIVING More than 100 community-minded young adults, families and neighbors from South Palm Beach County volunteered their time and decorating skills at the new and exciting mitzvah project, “Bake a Difference” on November 17. They worked alongside some very special residents from the Jewish Association for Residential Care and others to decorate and personalize 1,840 Chanukah cookies and 600 holiday cards. The delicious goodies were packaged along with notes of greeting and were distributed at the Thanksgiving dinner hosted by Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services and the Adolph and Rose Levis Jewish Community Center. The annual communal meal benefits seniors, special needs adults and community members in our area who are alone or cannot make a festive meal for themselves. Emily Einhorn, YAD Social Action Chair, led a wonderful event that brought many elements of the community together. The cookies went fast, but the love and spirit of tzedakah behind them meant much more to both the recipients and the participants.

YOUNG ADULTS CELEBRATE THE SEASON IN BLUE AND WHITE More than 100 young Jewish adults in their 20s to early 40s from throughout South Palm Beach County celebrated Chanukah at the second annual “Blue and White Party” on December 7. Reserved exclusively for the Young Adult Division, Il Bacio Bar & Lounge on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach set the perfect scene to hang out with friends, meet new people and dance the night away! With a mix of tradition and today, the evening featured latkes, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, and the guests brought gifts for children in need. YAD Chair Bryan Drowos briefly described Federation’s important work, and our local and global impact. Federation President & CEO Matt Levin dropped in to socialize with the next generation. The event was led by YAD Social Chairs, Lawrence Melcer and Margot Shooster, and Blue & White Event Chairs, Lauren Friedman and Richard Koblick. The night’s festivities were made possible through the generous support of the Sandelman Foundation.
YOUNG ADULTS WANDER FROM SALT 7 TO KARMA AND BEYOND FOR HAPPY HOURS With a growing turnout each month, the Young Adult Division attracts almost 100 Jewish adults in their 20s to early 40s for Wandering Happy Hours. With pulsing excitement and energy, new friends sip cocktails and schmooze with like-minded peers and learn a bit about making a difference in the community. On November 7, they wandered to Salt 7 on Atlantic in Delray, where gorgeous weather allowed participants to mingle
on an outdoor patio as well as in a posh party room. And on January 16, unruly winter temperatures didn’t hold them back from a great evening in the sleek, modern atmosphere of Karma Sushi Steakbar in Boca’s Mizner Park. BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL DIVISION (B&P) On the Move for Business and Community With all the activity and enthusiasm, it’s hard to believe this is only our second B&P season. We just keep making greater strides as the Jewish community’s business hub. With two new initiatives, we’re bringing together professionals and entrepreneurs from a wide range of professions and industries in even more ways. Redefining the term Business Casual, we created a new series of fun, activity-based networking opportunities for women. At the same time, we’ve launched our inaugural INSPIRE mentoring program. With twelve pairings of promising entrepreneurs with local captains of industry, we’re cultivating business leaders for tomorrow as we build our Jewish community. We’ll be recognizing their commitment at the season’s 4th Industry Icon Event on March 26.
B&P INSPIRE: CULTIVATING TODAY’S BUSINESS LEADERS FOR TOMORROW An innovative Federation mentoring initiative, INSPIRE is sparking, motivating, cultivating and equipping the rising stars of business and philanthropy to lead our Jewish community to great new heights. Offered through the Business & Professional Division (B&P) of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, INSPIRE pairs accomplished mentors with the area’s most promising entrepreneurs for deeply enriching and rewarding one-on-one and group exchanges. Designed to help sharpen business acumen and foster a more philanthropic mindset, these powerful partnerships will not only benefit all participants, but will also help keep our Jewish flame burning brightly for generations to come. The INSPIRE participants gathered at St. Andrews Country Club on January 7 for an elegant Cocktail Reception Kickoff. They heard from Federation President & CEO, Matt Levin and the chair of INSPIRE, Rick Paul, with a chance to meet, mingle and get to know each other amid cocktails and a seated dinner. The B&P Division is generously sponsored by Bibby Financial Serivces. INSPIRE is presented by BNY Mellon Wealth Management.

BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL DIVISION (B&P)
BUSINESS CASUAL: GIRLS NIGHT OUT GETS A GREATER PURPOSE The Business and Professional Division of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County has redefined the term business casual. Adding fun, purpose and value to the phrase, they’ve created Business Casual – a series of innovative, casual, activity-based networking opportunities exclusively for women looking to build their professional and community alliances. Leaving the formalities of work back at the office, this group of dynamic women is strengthening their business connections while forging new friendships and building a better community. Chaired by Tracy Kawa and Stephanie Midler, the new series launched on December 18 at Vino Van Gogh in Delray Beach. The women had fun with step-by-step instructions on how to recreate a painting, plenty of laughs, and great food and wine. The second part of the series was on January 13 at Asia for Sushi & Sake 101 with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and an interactive lesson in the art of creating sushi rolls taught by a professional chef. The series continues on March 20 at Craft It in Deerfield Beach for Making Passover Personal. Register online at jewishboca.org/businesscasual.

GIVING & GROWING TOGETHER
2013 Annual Report
VISION
Rooted in Jewish values, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County seeks to inspire and galvanize local residents and organizations to build and sustain a strong, caring, vibrant Jewish community for today and tomorrow.
MISSION At the hub of the Jewish community, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County strategically engages donors, supporters and community partners in addressing and planning for current and future needs of the Jewish people locally, in Israel and around the world. The Federation accomplishes these goals by: building Jewish community and developing Jewish communal leadership; promoting Jewish identity, education and engagement; caring for the vulnerable; advocating for the well-being and security of the Jewish people and standing with Israel, their spiritual homeland.

BREAKING NEW GROUND & WINNING NEW HEARTS Dear Federation Family: What a pleasure it is to reflect on the past year, which was marked by tremendous achievements, outstanding leadership and an overriding sense of Jewish community that extends beyond our campus. It seems the excitement that stirred in the early years of our Federation has been rekindled with more donors of all ages joining us, popular new events right out of the gate, and a bustle around campus that has invigorated us all. For the first time since the most recent recession, our Annual Campaign increased by $600,000 last year. Endowments are also on the rise and there seems to be good news at every turn— from receiving a coveted 4-star rating by Charity Navigator to drawing sold-out attendance for new initiatives such as THE EVENT. We’ve cultivated partnerships across our Jewish community and, after seven years in planning, we have broken ground for the stunning, state-of-the-art Continuing Care Retirement Community, Sinai Residences of Boca Raton. We’re also building for the future with our new Jewish Community Leadership Initiative. Through all of it we have never lost sight of the people who have stood by us through thick and thin. So this year we have dedicated a special event called the Golden Gathering specifically to honor those loyal, longtime donors who have been supporting Federations for 18 years or more. You cannot have such accomplishments without dedicated lay and professional leadership, and our Federation is fortunate to have both— all smart, vibrant and fully committed to our cause. It has been deeply satisfying for each of us to be part of this wonderful organization, especially during the past year. We hope you, too, feel a sense of accomplishment knowing you helped make extraordinary things possible for so many. Warm Regards,
Ellen R. Sarnoff Chair, Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Board of Directors
Richard Steinberg Chair, Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation
Matthew C. Levin President & CEO, Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County

YEAR IN REVIEW
2013
Buoyed by an increase in donations and an influx of new givers, our Federation is growing, vibrant and revitalized. We’ve created new partnerships and rekindled old ones. We’ve launched exciting initiatives that welcome donors of all ages and all levels of giving. Our leadership has never been stronger or more resolute in addressing the needs of today and the future. And we have broken new ground literally with a stunning state-of-the-art Continuing Care Retirement Community being built on our campus. Following are just a few highlights from this banner year for our Federation.
CHAILIFE 46
COMFORT
Federation is committed to caring for the community’s large population of seniors, including 250 local Holocaust survivors who receive meal preparation, home cleaning and personal care services.
ANNUAL CAMPAIGN: BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL DIVISION (B&P). In its second year, B&P continued its successful Industry ICON events, grew its cabinet to nearly 50 members and added Business Casual, a networking series for women. It also launched the INSPIRE mentorship program, pairing local business icons with entrepreneurs from our community. COUNTRY CLUB COMMUNITIES AND NEIGHBORHOODS. Committed leaders and volunteers once again educated their friends, neighbors and acquaintances about the importance of our Annual Campaign. EMERGING JEWISH PHILANTHROPISTS. These active younger major donors rocked with Bon Jovi, mingled with top speakers at private receptions and took part in a mission to Cuba where they connected powerfully with each other and our extended Jewish family. EVERYONE COUNTS. We embarked on a campaign to bring in 1,000 new donors of all ages and giving levels, over 18 months. KING DAVID SOCIETY (KDS). These distinguished philanthropists enjoyed an intimate insider briefing on the Middle East with the Wall Street Journal’s Bret Stephens, and a private reception with Dr. Kenneth Stein. MAJOR GIFTS. The Sandler Family Major Gifts Event featuring David Gergen broke attendance records; welcomed new Ketubah Society members, Anne and Norman Jacobson; and honored Debra and Jerry Kramer, and Beverly Saltz and William Newman. It also launched the Make a Major Difference Campaign challenging our community to bring in 100 new major donors to Federation over 18 months.
PRIME MINISTERS COUNCIL (PMC). Our Prime Ministers Council (PMC) added three new families to this top giving level. At national PMC events and missions, members receive access to world leaders as they meet and network with peers in world-class venues. WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY. With nearly 800 Lions of Judah, the roar of our pride is heard around the world. Attendance at January’s Annual Lion of Judah Luncheon topped 400. Our Pomegranates and communities drew women to an array of outreach events, and 28 travelers joined our Women on a Mission trip to advocate in Washington, DC. YOUNG ADULT DIVISION (YAD). Through YAD, young adults came together to learn, laugh, make a difference and enjoy being Jewish. They celebrated Chanukah YAD-style, had an “I Love the 80s” party, cleaned the beach, were taught by rabbis, decorated cookies with JARC residents, and enjoyed happy hours at local hot spots. THE EVENT. A sold out crowd of 750 from across our vibrant, diverse Jewish community came together for a second year to celebrate all the good we do together. Jewish organizations showcased their offerings, aid recipients shared their compelling stories and we heard from guest speaker Mandy Patinkin. SUPER SUNDAY. More than 300 volunteers kept the phones ringing and donations pouring in as we raised more than $550,000 for those in need. Our teen initiative drew dozens of students to join in the cause.

FEDERATION PROGRAMS: LEADERSHIP. Thirty of our Jewish community’s key leaders spent five transformative days in Israel on our Federation’s first Jewish Community Leadership Mission. Created to build bonds among lay and professional leadership, synagogues and organizations, the experience exceeded all expectations. Federation also prepared to launch the first Jewish Community Leadership Institute to foster collaboration and help Federation and community leaders excel. JEWISH COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL. Celebrating Israel’s founding, IsraelFest65 drew nearly 3,000 attendees of all ages to enjoy live music, children’s activities and display tents showcasing local Jewish resources. In addition, more than 1,500 people viewed Holocaust photographs unique to the Simon Wiesenthal Center at Federation’s Courage to Remember exhibit and programs. JCRC also hosted Legislative Send-off and Wrap-up events, as well as Teen Service Day. PLANNING & ALLOCATIONS. This committee, charged with annually assessing local needs, distributes funding according to our community’s priorities. Last year, P&A directed aid to benefit seniors, individuals with special needs and local Holocaust survivors, provided for Jewish day school scholarships and enhanced opportunities for innovative Jewish learning. P&A also funded outreach and engagement initiatives across the denominational spectrum and funded the advocacy efforts of our JCRC. ISRAEL & OVERSEAS. Through the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and the Ethiopian National Project (ENP), Federation touches the lives of thousands of the most vulnerable in our Jewish family worldwide. Our Partnership 2Gether (formerly Partnership 2000 or P2K) continues to build bridges of friendship with our sister city in Israel, Kiryat Bialik, by engaging in exchanges among women, educators, professionals, and students since 2002. BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL COMMUNITY BUS. Young Jewish adults truly “returned home” during their 10-day trip to Israel on our first dedicated Birthright Israel community bus. The 22 to 26-year olds, hailing from South Palm Beach County, were accompanied by two Federation staff members throughout their inspirational journey to the heart of the global Jewish community.
DEPARTMENT OF JEWISH EDUCATION. DJE’s School Educational Services offered an array of professional development programming for more than 500 teachers in our early childhood centers, congregational schools and day schools. Chesed Day once again brought more than 500 day school students to learn together on the Federation campus. Twenty-eight local residents completed the two-year Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning curriculum, and 80 post-graduates attended weekly classes. Fifty-two high school students participated in the March of the Living. PJ LIBRARY® INITIATIVE. More than 1,100 local families raising Jewish children have been receiving Jewish books for their youngsters through the new PJ Library® - South Palm Beach County Partnership. Hundreds of families have also enjoyed PJ Library activities around the community, including a kickoff concert with PJ Library performer, Rick Recht.
FEDERATION AFFILIATED CORPORATIONS: FEDERATION TRANSPORTATION SERVICES (FTS). FTS provided 52,000 trips last year, assisting senior and disabled clients with transportation to doctors’ offices, grocery stores, pharmacies and local congregate hot meal sites. FTS also transported students from Donna Klein Jewish Academy, Hillel Day School and Adolph and Rose Levis Jewish Community Center to offsite school and camp activities. JEWISH COMMUNITY FACILITIES CORPORATION. This subsidiary of the Federation continued operation and management of the 100-acre campus with more than 300,000 square feet of building space including schools, apartment and office buildings, and training, cultural and recreational facilities. FEDERATION CCRC DEVELOPMENT, LLC. This independent, not-for-profit entity owned by the Federation has been governing and developing Sinai Residences of Boca Raton. This vibrant, modern continuing care retirement community that will occupy 23.5 acres on the Federation campus is expected to open in late 2015. As of March 2014, over 197 parties have reserved their new apartment homes.
WITH ITS LAUNCH OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (JCLI), FEDERATION IS COMMITTED TO BUILDING COMMUNITY FAR INTO THE FUTURE BY FOSTERING LEADERSHIP AT ALL LEVELS FOR LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS AND SYNAGOGUES. 49 CHAILIFE
JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION: ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN. The Promises Kept Campaign, launched just over a year ago, continued to strengthen efforts to meet the needs of our community well into the future. Its progress included a number of unrestricted gifts, including a very substantial commitment from Debra and Jerry Kramer. CREATE A JEWISH LEGACY. In its second year, CJL continued its successful partnerships with 15 local agencies, schools and synagogues all working to secure our Jewish community’s future through planned gifts that benefit their organizations. The partners, who shared their best practices at the annual CJL Town Hall Forum, have so far achieved over $10 million in commitments.

PROFESSIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE. The growth of the JJCF to over seventy million dollars in combined assets is largely due to the PAC who have encouraged their clients to establish current and legacy charitable gifts through trusts, bequests, life insurance policies and donor advised funds. With over 100 members, the PAC provided networking and educational opportunities. Members also participated in our remarkable PAC mission to Israel.
RESCUE
Federation directly supports 17 Chesed Relief Centers throughout the Volga Region of the Former Soviet Union, serving approximately 6,000 poverty-stricken elderly Jews, nearly half of whom are not considered victims of Nazi persecution.
JEWISH WOMEN’S FOUNDATION. As an incubator for informed Jewish philanthropists and leaders, JWF raises and directly allocates funds to special programs for women and children. JWF celebrated its 10th anniversary and allocated to more than 8 projects locally and in Israel. During the past 10 years, JWF has granted well over $500,000.
LION OF JUDAH ENDOWMENT In 2013, 11 more women joined our LOJE program, ensuring their generous annual Lion gifts to the Federation in perpetuity. Now with 269, our community continues to lead with the highest number of “Lions Forever” in the country.
THE JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION (JJCF) HAS GROWN ITS ASSETS TO MORE THAN $70 MILLION, AS CUSTODIAN FOR FOUNDATION, AGENCY AND SYNAGOGUE FUNDS. JJCF ALSO FACILITATES PLANNED GIVING FOR 15 LOCAL JEWISH INSTITUTIONS THROUGH ITS CREATE A JEWISH LEGACY PROGRAM. 51 CHAILIFE

MAKE A TAX-SMART INVESTMENT IN OUR JEWISH FUTURE THROUGH THE JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION As a philanthropist, you care about the future of our Jewish community – but you also want to protect your own financial future. That’s where the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) of South Palm Beach County may be appropriate. JJCF offers charitable gift plans and tax-smart strategies that will help you realize your philanthropic goals and your personal legacy by establishing: • A Donor Advised Fund or “philanthropic bank” in which the assets are invested and you may make recommendations for distributions to charitable organizations. • An Endowment Fund, such as LOJE and PACE, to perpetuate your annual commitment to the Federation/UJA campaign. • A Designated Endowment Fund, to provide annual support for specific programs. • A Charitable Trust, Annuity or UniTrust, to provide annual income to you and benefit the charity in the future. • A Charitable Lead Trust that will provide the funding for a charity for a specific number of years (typically 20) after which the principal is transferred to another person. The Trustees of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation are empowered to protect your “donor’s intent” by monitoring the allocation of your funds long into the future. Additionally, when you establish an Endowment Fund or Trust through our Federation’s JJCF, you may also be recognized in local and national honor societies. For further information, contact Steve Rose, Vice President, Foundation at 561.852.3114. JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Honoring the Past & Strengthening the Future For nearly 30 years, the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) has been the steward for individuals and families to leave their heartfelt legacies. Transferring wealth and passing down Jewish values, these visionary benefactors are ensuring the wellbeing of our people for generations to come, and the continuity of programs and services they hold dear. JJCF has grown to more than $70 million in combined assets as custodian for Foundation, agency and synagogue funds. At our first Golden Gathering in February, we honored longtime donors whose generosity has established this community and strengthened its future. And, as we look to grow our unrestricted endowments and our Promises Campaign, more of us – from Golden annual donors to relative newcomers - are recognizing the importance and satisfaction of investing in the future of our community and our people. Our dedicated, skilled Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) members and our experienced staff stand ready to help find the right vehicle for each individual or family interested in leaving a meaningful legacy.
GOLDEN GIVERS THANKED FOR 18+ YEARS OF GENEROSITY AT BAGELS WITH GOLDA Their long-term commitment reveals a remarkable thread of caring for their neighbors and the Jewish people. They are bound together by a deep-rooted pride that nourishes the seeds for future generations. The Federation’s Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation… showed its appreciation for the Golden Givers who have contributed to Annual Campaigns for 18 years or more. On January 22, the JJCF presented a collective thank you for more than 100 Golden Givers with a Golden Gathering breakfast event. They were invited to enjoy Bagels with Golda, a one-woman, audience-participatory show featuring Joan Wolfberg as Golda Meir. Dorothy Wizer, Golden Gathering Chair, welcomed the guests and offered a personal story on what giving means to her. Dorothy, who has endowed her Federation gifts in both the South Palm Beach County and Richmond, VA Jewish communities, was followed by other longtime, dedicated contributors who shared their own “golden moments.”
After a slide presentation of “then and now” Federation milestones, Elyssa Kupferberg, Vice Chair of JJCF and Chair of Foundation’s Endowment Campaign, thanked these Golden Givers for all they have done in the past and will continue to do for future generations through their legacy endowments. He rolled it around the block with a sign ‘Help the Israeli Army - Buy my toys’ and returned with $6.50. When I announced his contribution at our temple, pockets opened. Profile In Giving
TOM KAPLAN: SECURING OUR JEWISH FUTURE When it comes to philanthropy, most donors understand the concept of making an annual gift to a charity, but few understand the opportunities to truly “leave a legacy.” Thomas R. Kaplan, the 2014 Mitzvah Society honoree, combines both of these charitable acts and takes the mitzvah of giving to another level. Tom utilizes his role as President of Kaplan, Krauss & Levine, LLC, a local life insurance and estate planning firm, and his leadership positions in numerous philanthropic and professional organizations, to encourage people to think charitably. He advises his clients and colleagues to take the extra step by endowing their gifts to ensure that we will always be a strong, vibrant Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County where future generations will thrive. What inspired you to become involved in the Jewish community? Growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, my parents were always very involved in our community. As a young boy, I started my volunteerism at the JCC in Pittsburgh. My involvement and satisfaction have strengthened over my past 30 years in Florida. Among my many charitable activities, I was the first Chair of Financial Resource Development for our Federation, as well as Chair of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation, and I was President of the Adolph and Rose Levis JCC. I continue to volunteer my time in leadership roles, including on the JFSPBC Executive Committee and as South Palm Beach County Chair for Israel Bonds. Why is legacy giving so important? To have a strong Jewish community in the future, we need to start to plan for that today. I tell my clients, that the Annual Campaign is like a “checking account,” and the endowment is a “savings account” for tomorrow. By leaving a legacy, we can guarantee there will always be a strong, secure future with continued programs to serve our Jewish community for generations to come. What is your professional philosophy on planned giving and philanthropy? I see myself as a catalyst for charitable giving. I believe it is the professional’s role to educate his or her clients (and colleagues) to help them develop a philanthropic vision. How would you advise other professionals on developing planned giving opportunities? The members of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation’s Professional Advisory Committee approach planned giving from a variety of fields. My advice cuts across all professions. Many people, if asked, would want to leave a legacy. It is vital for professionals to actually ask the questions of their clients that could create gifts that will secure the future of our community and our people. I like to say it is a “win-win-win” for all – the client, their family and the Jewish community. By simply asking the right questions, you can make spectacular things happen.
For ten years, the Mitzvah Society has recognized professionals who have been instrumental in leading their clients to make planned gifts to the JJCF. Tom Kaplan received the 2014 Mitzvah Society Award on March 4 at a cocktail reception at Addison Reserve Country Club. 61 CHAILIFE

$2.4 MILLION GIFT PROMISES TO TRANSFORM NEWLY NAMED RUTH & NORMAN RALES JEWISH FAMILY SERVICES
t has been just under two years since Norman Rales passed away, yet he and his family’s support of the South Palm Beach County Jewish community and specifically Jewish Family Services continues to grow. In December 2013, the beloved sons of Norman and his wife Ruth Rales (also deceased), all of whom reside outside the state, announced a $2.4 million gift on behalf of the Rales family to the newly named Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services ( JFS), a community partner of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. With this generous donation, JFS will create the “Center for Families and Children,” which will reach an underserved demographic in the South Palm Beach County community. According to JFS President and CEO Danielle Hartman, the four programs falling under the center’s umbrella include: Vocational & Employment Services, Domestic Abuse Education & Action Program, Financial Assistance Program, and Counseling & Community Outreach. “This gift is truly transformational for our agency and the individuals we support,” said Hartman. “The Rales brothers believe in the services we provide to the community. We are thankful for their trust in our agency as well as their continued support exemplified by this investment.” “Our parents came from humble roots,” said Steven, Mitchell and Joshua Rales. “Neither of them could afford to attend college and our father was raised in an orphanage in New York City during the depression. As a couple, Norman and Ruth Rales’ ambition was not solely to achieve the American dream for themselves and their children but to assist others less fortunate than them in achieving that same dream. The work of the Ruth & Norman Rales Foundation, and in particular its partnership with JFS, illustrates their commitment to helping others. This is our effort to continue to build upon the foundation of our parents’ good work. We consider this truly to be an honor and a privilege.” Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services gratefully acknowledges Create a Jewish Legacy for providing the tools to support its growing legacy giving program. CJL Community Partners: Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center, B’nai Torah Congregation, Boca Raton Synagogue, Congregation B’nai Israel, Congregation Shaarei Kodesh, Donna Klein Jewish Academy, Hillel Day School of Boca Raton, Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach, Jewish Association for Residential Care, Jewish Education Center of South Florida, Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services, Temple Beth El, Torah Academy of Boca Raton, Weinbaum Yeshiva High School.

EXPLORING OUR HOMELAND & BUILDING COMMUNITY TOGETHER: OUR FIRST COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP MISSION
Visiting an IDF Base in Israel’s far northwest corner made clear what it takes to maintain secur ity for our Jewish family in this geo graphically tiny country.
T
hirty of our key Jewish community leaders spent five IOC transformative days in Israel together in November. Intended to build bonds among lay and professional leadership from our Federation, synagogues and organizations, our Federation’s first Community Leadership Mission exceeded all expectations. The emotions and senses, as well as impact on our community, cannot be summed up by telling you the sites explored, the high level expert briefings, or even the visits to some of the extraordinary things our community’s generosity helps make possible. After following in the footsteps of our homeland’s history and geography, sacrifices and security, human services and entrepreneurship, what stands out most is having experienced them together.

Many in the group hadn’t met before. But, as our Federation leaders, rabbis, agency heads and key volunteers learned and prayed, danced and sang, laughed and cried, toured and ate with each other, they grew together as friends and leaders of a community united in caring and embracing our vibrant diversity. They’re still bursting with nachas (pride) and running on all the ruach (spirit) they raised. And they returned committed to spreading and strengthening the bonds we’ve been forging – before, during and after the mission - to create a new kind of South Palm Beach County Jewish community. A community in which, from our diversity, we stand as one for Israel, we rise as one to preserve Jewish identity, and together we answer the call to understand and care for each other – at home, in Israel and wherever our Jewish family is in need.

JEWISH COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL (JCRC)
JCRC AND AGENCIES BRIEF LEGISLATORS BEFORE 2014 SESSION The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) brought State Senators and Representatives who serve the area to the annual Legislative Sendoff on January 21, 2014. Approximately 50 persons, including legislators, staff from state and federal government officials’ offices, leaders of the JCRC and beneficiary agencies attended the breakfast briefing at Jewish Association for Residential Care (JARC) on the Federation’s campus to hear vital concerns of the Jewish community which will be considered during this year’s session in Tallahassee.
comprehensive services. Andrea Kalkstein, an Associate Vice President at Federation, addressed the funding needs of Federation Transportation Services, which provides door-to-door service for seniors and persons with disabilities.
Andrew Robins, Esq., JCRC Co-chair and emcee for the briefing, and Matthew C. Levin, Federation President & CEO, greeted the legislators and acknowledged the essential partnerships among the Federation and its beneficiary agencies.
Drawing on his experience in the U.S. House of Representatives and as a former Florida State Senator, Congressman Ted Deutch urged all in attendance to reach out and work together to accomplish what is needed.
Robins reminded the legislators that, “an essential fundraising priority of our Federation has been to develop resources to support programs for the elderly, for the hungry, for Holocaust survivors and for those with special needs. Unfortunately, the needs of our residents exceed the resources we can develop on our own. Therefore, the much-appreciated support of the legislators present and their colleagues is critical to the welfare and survival of many in our community.” Presentations from three beneficiary agencies highlighted local human needs and how much is at stake amid shortfalls in funding for services. During her briefing, Dr. Debra Hallow, JARC Executive Director, shared the powerful story of a client who accompanied her onstage. Danielle Hartman, President & CEO of Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS) spoke on a number of areas covered by the agency’s

Bernie Friedman, Esq., longtime lobbyist for Florida’s Association of Jewish Federations, reported on additional areas of concern which will be part of the 2014 legislative session, including state-funded business initiatives with Israel.
Following the agency briefings, the state government officials in attendance addressed the audience, assuring them that they would advocate on the community’s behalf. State Senators Maria Sachs and Joseph Abruzzo, and State Representatives Mark Pafford, Lori Berman, Bill Hager and Dave Kerner then each discussed concerns they share with the Federation and its beneficiary agencies. Together, they addressed issues including funding for Holocaust survivors and those with special needs, mental health care and further state divestment to help deter Iran’s nuclear capability. By bringing together key stakeholders, decision-makers and service providers, the JCRC’s annual Legislative Sendoff is one of the many vehicles through which the Federation carries out its role in coordinating planning for the well-being of our community and our people.

JEWISH DAY SCHOOL STUDENTS COME TOGETHER TO LEARN MEANING OF CHESED More than 500 first through fifth grade students and 50 educators from our community’s diverse Jewish day schools gathered at the Federation campus on December 11 to learn about the Jewish responsibility to take care of the people around us. Filling Zinman Hall with colorful uniforms, kipot and ruach, the 1st through 5th grade students from Donna Klein Jewish Academy (DKJA), Hillel Day School and Torah Academy learned about the concept of chesed. Marla Weiss Egers, Federation’s Executive VP of FRD, explained that, “The Federation isn’t a building or a campus, but a group of Jewish people helping Jewish people they know and Jewish people they don’t know.” Then, fifth graders decorated caps for children living with cancer through Stack the Caps — Paint the Caps while grades 1-4 decorated tzedakah cans with clay, jewels and 18 pennies. This year, students chose to direct the tzedakah donations to our Federation. The younger children were led by 30 middle schoolers from Hillel and DKJA, who were prepared by 15 high school students from DKJA and Weinbaum Yeshiva High School. Chesed Day was sponsored by the day school community and organized by the Federation’s Department of School Education Services.
CONGREGATIONAL & DAY SCHOOL EDUCATORS JOIN FOR 2ND ANNUAL ETHICS INSTITUTE Nearly 150 local day school and congregational school educators came together at the Federation campus on November 4 to learn about Bullying: Fostering Empathy and Action in Schools. This 2nd annual Rosenfeld Ethics Institute featured a four-hour highly interactive, multimedia full group session followed by grade-level breakouts. Educators explored the roots of bullying and the power of each individual to be a catalyst for change. They were introduced to individual, classroom and school-wide strategies and school action plans by Jan Darsa, Director of Jewish Education and Mary Johnson, Senior Historian for the renowned Facing History and Ourselves, and by Dr. Anita Meinbach of the University of Miami. Participation was free of charge through sponsorship from the Jack and Harriet Rosenfeld Foundation Program in Jewish Education at the University of Miami School of Education, Facing History and Ourselves, and the Department of School Educational Services of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Students needed to answer and explain how they got their answers. As part of the E2K program, DKJA was invited to participate in this universal competition, executed through the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (the parent organization for the program). Problems required high-level analytical thinking. The students needed to ‘figure out’ values for variables in different contexts. They employed trial and error, as well as mathematical reasoning. 561.852.3333 • www.ruthralesjfs.org Community Spreads Holiday Spirit While Chanukah was extraordinarily early this year, the spirit of community giving lasted well into December. JFS was able to brighten the holidays for many thanks to the generosity of an array of local groups. The annual “Woodfield Feeds the Hungry “ project not only raised significant funds for the Jacobson Family Food Pantry, but also helped teach a new generation to care for and take care of others. Families collected and packaged food, made cards for donation bags, and delivered a delicious meal to those in need. The Polo Club once again raised funds to purchase gift cards for children, and their generous donations made such a difference in the lives of so many. Stonebridge collected food, assembled attractive packages and made deliveries to seniors in need. They also gathered donated Chanukah gifts for local children who would otherwise go without. At their annual holiday party, the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Federation’s Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation also collected gift cards for local residents in need. And The Giving Tree at Temple Beth El donated gift cards for lowincome seniors, as well as for the children in JFS financial assistance client families. This outpouring of caring and love for those in need in our community was deeply moving. JFS is truly appreciative to all of the different sections of our community that came together to make the holidays special for those who rely on the agency in so many ways.
