OUR FEDERATION PICKS UP TWO SOUTH FLORIDA ADDY AWARDS! The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County was the proud recipient of both a gold and silver ADDY, which were presented at the awards ceremony on March 4 in Fort Lauderdale. The ADDY award is the highest regional honor an organization can receive in advertising. We captured a silver for our ground-breaking “Fedstock” Campaign, promoting an historic weekend of first-class music and family fun at Mizner Park. And we brought home the Gold for Federation’s “You Have the Power” Annual Campaign Video, which can be viewed at jewishboca.org. Congratulations to the talented and creative marketing posse led by Senior Vice President of Marketing & Corporate Development Andy Rose.

WELCOME TO CHAI LIFE This publication is produced by the Marketing & Communications Department of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

A WARM HELLo

From Ellen R. Sarnoff, Incoming Chair of the Board What an honor and privilege it is to have the opportunity to serve as Chair of the Board for the 2011-2012 Campaign year. I have many goals in mind for the coming year. I especially wish to bring back those donors who have been disenfranchised, to address their needs and to bring our family back together again — stronger and more committed than ever. I consider this to be a pressing priority and will do my best to lead our Federation in this direction. I also want to emphasize our “Create a Jewish Legacy” program for those who wish to leave a permanent mark of their generosity in our community, and who want to help fellow Jews for generations to come. And finally, I’d like to help further cultivate the next generation of Jewish leaders in our community through our Federation’s extraordinary Next Gen program. I am thrilled that I will be working closely with our Federation staff and leaders on these initiatives, and am confident that we have much to look forward to in the coming year.

Our Outgoing Chair

Annual Meeting 2011 Federation leaders and supporters gathered in Zinman Hall on April 14 to “honor the past and embrace the future” at the 2011 Annual Meeting. While celebrating the fundraising year, guests toasted outgoing Chair Cindy Orbach Nimhauser and enthusiastically welcomed new Chair Ellen R. Sarnoff, as well as recognized recipients of several major awards.

With bittersweet feelings, we say thank you but not good-bye to Cindy Orbach Nimhauser, who has served as Federation Chair this year. Deeply committed to the Jewish people, Cindy kept us inspired and on course with her vision of a friendly, accessible Federation for all donors, local residents and employees alike. Her office door was always open, and her candy bowl always full – with oatmeal as well as candy. But that's not what we love best about Cindy. From being a cheerful leader at Fedstock to her marathon hours at Super Sunday and her reasoned and strategic thinking at endless board meetings, Cindy led with her whole heart and soul — as well as the expertise of a seasoned professional. On behalf of the entire Federation family, thank you Cindy, for your most valuable service to our Federation.

"I

t was a challenging year, but an encouraging one as well. We've made some progress. We're working closer together as a community, particularly increasing communications between our beneficiary agencies and Federation leadership. I am so excited about what the Continuous Care Retirement Community will mean for local seniors. We've enhanced our Women's Philanthropy Department and the Metro Division and are reaching out to the younger generation more than ever before. Now as the Jewish Agency for Israel's Director of Community and Donor Relations for the Southern Region, I look forward to continuing to work closely with our Federation and remaining as a trusted advisor, donor and friend." — Cindy Orbach Nimhauser, 2010-11 Federation Chair

F E D E R AT I O N

Dear Friends:

CAMPAIGN

You know it’s going to be a memorable campaign year when it starts with a mission to Budapest and Israel! To have witnessed firsthand the amazing work that Federation does overseas gave me all of the inspiration I needed to begin a new campaign season. We needed to come out of the gate strong, and start strong we did! Our Campaign Cabinet meetings, and the big “Campaign Ignition” kick off, proved to energize community leaders so that they had everything they needed to speak on behalf of our Federation. After three challenging years weathering one of the toughest economic climates of our lifetime, everyone was sufficiently excited about promoting the work of our Federation, including many promising new initiatives. I am already looking forward to finding more ways to “re-ignite” our community in 2012, so stay tuned… I’ll be back! Best Regards,

Joseph Mishkin, Campaign Chair

11: 0 2 y a d n Super Su Counting! & $632,000

By 5:30 pm on Super Sunday, March 27, 300+ volunteers of all ages had teamed up to raise $632,000 to help the community, from more than 1,000 donors. Two morning shifts filled Zinman Hall with compassion, dedication and ruach from all streams of our vibrant Jewish community. The very full and most rewarding day was co-chaired by Jodi & Jeff Harris and Naomi & Rich Steinberg. Once again, we proved how much our community cares – and that there’s nothing like Super Sunday to show it!

Adult Chairs: Jodi & Jeff Harris, Naomi & Rich Steinberg

Ellen R. Sarnoff, Cindy Orbach Nimhauser

In a Super Sunday innovation we’re sure to see repeated, the afternoon shift included a new “Make Your Bubbe Proud” initiative. Teens texted, tweeted, Facebooked and called their way to raise $65,000 – more than 10% of the entire day’s total. Our young future Jewish community leaders learned together, met other Jewish teens, earned community service hours, and helped the Super Sunday efforts by volunteering in all capacities. During the afternoon, while teens pulled out all the stops to raise funds through new media, the telephone calling continued. Families put together Passover food packages for those in need, children did Passover art projects and got their faces painted. Congressman Ted Deutch and his family manned the phones, as Gabi Cohen turned 6 with the party theme Start Tzedakah Early. A Balloon Drop ending was dramatic for all, and the day ended with lots of pizza and other treats. The day’s total continues to rise, with Super Sunday follow-up activities. 6

Evening of

Power 2 011 M AJOR GI F T S E V EN T

Major Gifts Event a Night of Elegance, Innovation, Optimism, Philanthropy The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s upbeat and up-to-date Major Gifts Evening of Power informed and inspired nearly 250 top Federation donors, celebrating their generosity as well as Israel’s high-tech entrepreneurial prowess. The Federation season’s most prestigious event was held at St. Andrews Country Club. Chaired by Amy & David Ross and Robin & Gary Rubin, the night of elegance, innovation, optimism and philanthropy raised nearly $1.4 million for the Federation’s Annual Campaign. The keynote from Saul Singer, co-author of Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle, provided a unique insider’s view of Israel’s latest high-tech developments, the stories behind them, and why Israel has the leading edge. His presentation was illustrated by a hands-on "taste of entrepreneurship" showcasing four cutting-edge Israeli companies. “Israel’s technological preeminence not only makes us proud,” said Joseph Mishkin, 2011 Annual Campaign Chair. “It also provides us with critical strategic lessons, courage and strength to meet so many growing, vital needs in local neighborhoods, in Israel and worldwide. And these achievements are great not only for Israel, but for the world - in commerce, education, medicine and far more.” “We carefully planned a positive, reinvigorating evening, from the cocktail reception and high tech expo, through the dinner and Saul’s keynote.” said Robin Rubin. “Tonight’s message about Israel as a driving force in global high-tech entrepreneurship is one that needs to be shared widely.” “Our major donors’ compassion and generosity continue to inspire us all,” said Amy Ross. ”Each one of them makes it possible for us to do so much good for our Jewish family in need. Our power as caring community members together truly changes the world.” Also co-chairing the evening were Amy and Robin’s parents, Phyllis & Harvey Sandler (Prime Minister’s Council), Pamela & Howard Kaye (Leadership Gifts), Mildred & Abner Levine (King David Society), Marissa & Jeff Hollander (Joshua Society), and Wendy & Robert Pressner (Crown of Judah Society).

Ketubah Society Members Honored Technology was joined by tradition at the Evening of Power, with a Ketubah Society Hall of Fame display honoring those whose cumulative Federation gifts total $1 million or more. “Our Ketubah Society recognizes those who have stood with our Federation through the years,” said Ellen R. Sarnoff, Financial Resource Development Chair, who welcomed new Ketubah Society members : Meryl and Ron Gallatin, Marilyn and Jack Pechter, and Drs. Carol and Irv Smokler. “As the Ketubah, the traditional Jewish marriage contract, signifies the commitment of life long support and loyalty of one to another, our Federation’s Ketubah Society honors those who have so generously demonstrated these sacred values toward our global Jewish family,“ said Sarnoff.

“Men’s Sports & Casino Night Out” Ups the Ante

Men who avidly care about sports as well as those in need went all in for a deluxe casino night at St. Andrews Country Club on March 29. They heard former Yankee Mike “Pags” Pagliarulo speak on the state of baseball and pro sports and played poker, black jack, craps and roulette. Chaired by David Ross, the evening also featured prizes, prime networking and great “game day” food & drink with the guys. Former Major Leaguers Andy Raffa, Dave Austen, Jay Tessmer and Jeff Juden were also on hand.

WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY

Women’s Philanthropy: Promise, Passion, Purpose and Pride As the 2011 Campaign year draws to a close, Women’s Philanthropy (WP) can be proud of its accomplishments. Our WP Officers are part of the remarkable ongoing collaborative effort that defines us as “Women as Philanthropists.” The Federation benefits from our shared successful vision, as the dollars raised by our generous women continue to represent more than half the campaign. WP makes our Jewish community stronger and more vibrant, while meeting the myriad of needs of the youngest to oldest, among local residents to those in Israel and overseas. We’ve created new ways for women to engage, launching our new Pomegranate level and our hugely successful Mom’s Time Out outreach program. “Promise, passion and purpose” is not just our Pomegranates’ tagline, but truly states what WP represents. WP links our past to our present to ensure the future of our Jewish community. Each of you can add your mark by making a difference. Dorothy Seaman Department of Women’s Philanthropy is Generously Sponsored by

Meryl Gallatin, Women’s Philanthropy Chair

Women’s Philanthropy Board The caring, generous women at the Women’s Philanthropy Board Installation Celebration on April 1 were clearly united and moved by their shared values, history and work together. The success and rededication of their sisterhood suffused Zinman Hall as they welcomed their incoming officers and wished a sincere farewell to those outgoing. The brunch, chaired by Doris Beck, brought spring indoors and into their hearts.

LUNCHEON

A very breezy day was no match for the fortitude of 133 of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s most generous women on January 26. They gathered for the 2011 Crown of Judah Luncheon in an elegantly decorated tent overlooking the lake at the beautiful home of ML Bedowitz. Celebrating their shared passion for philanthropy, the women heard from Professor Alan Dershowitz on “How to make the case for Israel to our children and grandchildren.” Wendy Pressner presented Leona Brauser with the first Clarice Pressner Award for her enduring leadership of Women’s Philanthropy at the Federation. Debra Kramer and Marianne Lerner of Boca West were honored for becoming Prime Minister’s Council Lions.

Having cut expenses significantly in 2009, our Federation entered the 2010 season ready to work harder than ever and eager to succeed. While the country still struggled in the midst of one of the most challenging economic periods in history, we focused on creating new strategies in order to re-engage donors and reach out to our entire Jewish community. Our ambition paid off with the full rollout of our “Donor Choice” program, the “Adopt-A-Project” initiative for country clubs and the creation of the “Pomegranate” program for women donors, which is a brand new level of giving. Looking toward a brighter Jewish future, we began the community-wide marketing of “Create a Jewish Legacy” to further promote planned giving and endowments. And, to reach out to Jews of all ages, we launched our first multi-generational Fedstock festival event which drew more than 7,000 local Jewish residents to Mizner Park for a weekend of first-class entertainment and family fun. Finally, we set a bright, new tone for a rejuvenated Federation by changing our messaging and focusing it on one positive uplifting word: power. You have the power to feed, save, rescue, comfort, inspire, educate…and to change the world. These seeds are sure to bear abundant fruit in the coming years, welcoming more Jews to our Federation family and expanding our good work to ever more people in need. We thank you for your continued support and dedication. Exciting times are on the horizon and each of us feels truly honored to help usher them in. B’ Shalom,

POWERING UP WITH NEW INITIATIVES

We reached out and listened to current and potential donors and heard their preferences in giving loud and clear. As a result, we now offer more choices for donors to direct their gifts to the area of Jewish need that speaks most passionately to their hearts. The Donor Choice Program, which was softly launched in 2010, is being fully implemented this year.

Adopt-a-Project Adopt-A-Project is a unique new opportunity for country clubs, geographic areas and divisions to support a specific project from one of our local and/or international beneficiary agencies. Some of these projects also provide participants with hands-on volunteer experiences. From a reunion luncheon for Holocaust survivors to feeding the hungry in our community to hosting a Passover seder for seniors, Adopt-A-Project has been eagerly welcomed by all.

THE Pomegranate LEVEL The new Pomegranate program, and the pin worn by its members, have been specially created for women who donate a minimum gift of $1,800 to our Annual Campaign. Pomegranate women are invited to special events, luncheons and seminars. Participants are informed of the special meaning behind being a Pomegranate — and all of the goodness that comes with that title. By wearing the stunning sterling pin, Pomegranates are reminded of the Jewish lives we have improved, rescued and renewed. They are also ever mindful of the work that is yet to be done.

CREATE A JEWISH LEGACY This year, we’ve stepped up efforts to promote “Create a Jewish Legacy,” which is a community-wide initiative facilitated by the Jewish Community Foundation of South Palm Beach County (the “Foundation”) to create a stronger, brighter Jewish future locally. Our goal is to promote the establishment of planned gifts to benefit our local agencies, schools and synagogues, the Federation and its international partners. The results could yield hundreds of millions of dollars in endowments that will perpetually fund essential programs and services in our Jewish community, in Israel and around the world. To date, all of our Federation’s founding beneficiary agencies are on board as well as four of the largest local synagogues. We expect additional agencies and synagogues to participate as we continue to promote the program throughout our community.

FEDERATION CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT: Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, a Continuing Care Retirement Community Our Federation’s vision for the future of our campus remains clear and on track. A centerpiece of that vision is development of Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), on a 22-acre parcel at the north end of the Richard & Carole Siemens Jewish Campus. A CCRC offers a blend of: housing, health care, hospitality, recreational and social services; plans include a life-care benefit which offers discounts for independent living residents on assisted living and nursing care. Sinai Residences will have 232 independent living units, 60 assisted living apartments, 60 skilled nursing suites, and 24 studio suites for the memory impaired. After years of planning and following extensive due diligence and feasibility studies, the project is being developed by an independent not-for-profit entity, Federation CCRC Development, LLC, that will be owned by our Federation. The idea originated from the Federation’s

desire to monetize available land on the Federation campus, thereby creating a revenue source for other aspects of our mission. In addition, the CCRC serves a material need within our community. Once stabilized, it can generate a projected annual cash flow ranging from $1.5 to $4 million. The first phase of financing for the Sinai Residences will consist of the issuance of a tax-free $9 million pre-development industrial revenue bond for preconstruction costs over the next 24-36 months. This will fund the cost of pre-marketing for the project, design development and other pre-development costs. The extensive market research conducted for Sinai Residences has been extremely positive, and we are excited to begin the formal pre-marketing phase once the pre-development financing closes in March. For more information about the Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, please contact Sarah Bitton at 561-852-6015 or sarahb@bocafed.org.

JEWISH COMMUNITY

FOUNDATION Create a Jewish Legacy Today

Chances are you already donate generously to one or more Jewish organizations. Now you can extend that commitment into the future with a legacy gift or bequest. A legacy gift is a simple and meaningful way to help guarantee a strong Jewish community for generations to come — and to support the causes you cherish. Your act of generosity can mean the difference between whether or not a neighbor eats today, an elderly resident receives a healthcare visit, a child learns about her Jewish heritage, or a Jew escapes violence and persecution. Please join us and lend your support for building a stable and vibrant Jewish future. As our parents and grandparents have done before us, we must now plan for our children. Let us all — individuals, families, agencies, synagogues — come together to ensure that no member of our Jewish family ever has to stand alone during a time of need. Learn more about Creating a Jewish Legacy in South Palm Beach County. Contact Marla Weiss Egers, Executive Vice President, Financial Resource Development at 561-852-3138 or email marlae@bocafed.org.

Four Generations of Family Philanthropy As David Kahn launches his career in his early 20s, he’s also started on his own philanthropic path – by joining his family members and setting up his own fund with the Jewish Community Foundation. His parents, Jeffrey and Deborah Kahn, and grandmother Joyce Kahn have longstanding JCF funds, and his sister Jennifer began hers with her Bat Mitzvah. The deep roots of this far-sighted, generous family go all the way back to the 1920s when Joyce’s father became involved in Jewish philanthropy. Jeffrey, a former JCF Chair and PAC Chair, and family appreciate their donor-advised funds, which allow them flexibility to easily vary their charitable contributions over time.

Jeffrey, Deborah, Jennifer, David and Joyce Kahn exemplify the value of setting up a donor-advised fund with JCF at all stages of life.

Mitzvah Society

Cocktail Reception

Professional Advisory Committee (PAC)

The local estate planning professionals of the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Jewish Community Foundation came together to honor their own at the 7th Annual Mitzvah Society Cocktail Reception on March 23. The room at St. Andrews Country Club radiated warmth and pride as 160 guests paid tribute to this year’s Mitzvah Society Honoree, David Pratt. Al Gortz and Don Tescher co-chaired the event, which began with Pratt’s brainstorm seven years ago. The Mitzvah Society recognizes the now 53 committed individuals whose client referrals have resulted in an Endowment gift to the Federation’s Jewish Community Foundation. Burt Moss and Steven Greenwald were inducted as new Mitzvah Society members at the reception. This year’s “repeat” Mitzvah Society members were also acknowledged: David Pratt, Marjorie Horwin, Al Gortz, Don Tescher, Elyssa Kupferberg, Mark Schaum, Marcy Robbins, Richard Steinberg and Adam Bankier.

paramount importance. Many of us have children who are first generation “Boca Ratonians” (if that is a word), and for those of us who will stay here, we will want our children to come back to live here, similar to other long-standing communities in the United States. Thus, we need to make sure that we have a thriving Jewish community for years to come. Q: Was tzedakah a strong tradition in your family or is it something you chose? DP: Philanthropy was not part of my upbringing, although my mother has always had a tremendous passion for helping others, and continues to volunteer at the ripe young age of 83. Tzedakah at a higher level is directly related to my professional success. I feel very fortunate in so many ways, and I enjoy giving back. Q: You chaired a PAC Mission to Israel in 2007; what was that like?

DP: It was the first time I went to Israel, and it was life changing; I made a commitment to return at least once a year. Going to Israel is like feeling as free as a bird; it is our country. It is where our history started, evolved, and will continue to evolve. It is the only place in the world where we are not in the minority, which is empowering. In May, about 30 professionals from South Palm and Palm Beach Federations and one person from Miami will make up our 2011 PAC Mission. It will be very special because of the united front of the Federations. There are a number of first timers on this trip, and my highlight will be seeing how they feel when they arrive and as they travel the country.

EDUCATION 600+ Day School Students Learn Meaning of Chesed More than 600 Grade 1-5 students from Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s beneficiary day schools gathered on the Federation campus for Chesed Day on December 9. From Donna Klein Jewish Academy, Hillel Day School of Boca Raton and Torah Academy of Boca Raton, they enthusiastically embraced the concept of Chesed, the Jewish obligation to be responsible for those around us. Following a program for all in Zinman Hall, they demonstrated their commitment through six hands-on helping projects in break-out groups. They also heard from the organizations and agencies that distributed the efforts of the morning to those in need: ChaiLifeLine, JAFCO, Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service Homebound, Yachad, JARC and Mae Volen Adult Care Center. The careful planning of school representatives convened by the Federation Department of Jewish Education’s School Education Services, and the synergy of bringing the schools together, led to a remarkable morning of learning, and action on behalf of others.

Rabbi Sugerman of WYHS is 2010-2011 Grinspoon-Steinhardt Teacher of Excellence Early Childhood Educators’ Conference “The Power of Documentation” 238 educators from South Palm Beach County’s Jewish early childhood centers convened recently at the annual Early Childhood Educators’ Conference. Together they learned with renowned specialist Dr. Judy Harris Helm about documenting children’s work. Both keynote and hands-on sessions presented how to capture and collect evidence of children’s learning, focused on both individual and class learning experiences. Effective documentation drives curriculum and collaboration in classrooms, telling the story and purpose of the experience.

The 2010-11 GrinspoonSteinhardt Teacher of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell, WYHS Head of School, Excellence Award has Rabbi Ben Sugerman been presented to Rabbi Ben Sugerman, a teacher of Judaics and psychology at Weinbaum Yeshiva High School. PARTNERSHIP 2000 PARTNERSHIP 2000 BUILDS LIVING BRIDGE OF FRIENDSHIP WITH ISRAEL

We are “Boca-Bialik”! P2K Chair in KB Gidi Shilo, KB Mayor Eli Dukorski

Though 6,500 miles away, Federation’s Sister City, Kiryat Bialik (KB) keeps getting closer through bonds of friendship, collaboration, and understanding. South Palm Beach County’s P2K Partnership with this growing community north of Haifa began in 2002 to create living bridges between residents and institutions. Both communities and their numerous participating women, teens, educators and other professionals continue to be immeasurably enriched as are the friends, families, students and co-workers with whom they share their experiences.

Pk Educators’ Exchange: Judaism and Environmentalism

Ten educators from our two communities came together this year both in Boca Raton and Kiryat Bialik (KB) to learn, to visit each other’s schools and to develop mutually beneficial activities and programming based on the teachings of Judaism and the Environment. Working with each other’s students and staying in each other’s homes, the educators connected personally as well as professionally, uniting as an extended Jewish family. The Israeli educators learned about the disastrous Carmel Forest fire as they Now, our educators stay in touch via Google Docs, the internet and Skype, and more were en route to South Palm Beach from Kiryat Bialik in December. One than165 students here and 200 in Kiryat Bialik are working together in a joint “Ecoparticipant, whose home near the fire was evacuated, told our students about the beauty of the Carmel Forest, the fire’s impact on the environment, Judaism” program. The educators have been accompanied at every step by Marilyn and the heroism of the firefighters and the police. Nachman, the Federation’s Director of School Educational Services “Together, we’re building personal and educational bridges, and planting seeds. Through P2K, our local students make meaningful exchanges with the students of KB. And the bridges they will build for our future are just what our educators today work so hard to facilitate.” - Carol Kolsky, Upper School Principal, Donna Klein Jewish Academy

The Carmel Forest must heal and restore itself, but our educators helped by clearing away the brush and low lying undergrowth.

“I had the opportunity to connect with my KB colleagues in a meaningful way that I am able to share with my temple community. This exchange has the potential to make Israel come alive for our students and their families through the personal connections and ongoing relationships that are difficult to otherwise create.” - Robin Eisenberg, RJE, Director of Jewish Learning and Living, Temple Beth El “P2K is a life-changing experiences. As Directors and Principals we will not only impact each other in so many ways, but also our teachers, students, parents, families and community. It’s an opportunity to act on something and see it come to life, and to touch our lives here and across the world in KB.” Cathy Berkowitz, Education Director, Mirochnick Religious School, B’nai Torah Congregation “The bridge we’ve built between KB and our synagogue has been incredible. Our students

Sitting in “The Khan of the White Donkey” in Tzfat, our educators from both communicate with each other through special lessons that we’ve put together as a team. This countries discussed the Judaic-Ecological experiences they had shared, and project’s ripple effect will have amazing results on our students forever.” – Kim Beame, MAJS, planned how they would expand this wonderful “Gesher Chai” (Living Bridge). RJE, Education Director, Barry Ira Graff School for Living Judaism, Congregation B’nai Israel

Our educators from both countries stood by the Mediterranean Sea and identified their exchange’s responsibility of “Sustainability” for the next generations.

Jewish Roots participants from KB visited us over Hanukkah.

The teens viewed a robotics competition for high school students from throughout Israel

While in Israel, our teens volunteered in the Carmel Forest, cleaning up after this winter’s tragic fire

Jewish Roots is an exchange between teens in South Palm Beach County and our sister city, Kiryat Bialik. Each year, both groups travel across the globe to stay in each other’s homes and share activities. They also keep in close touch by telephone, email and Facebook. The teens broaden their knowledge of Jewish life, deepen their Jewish identity and form relationships for a lifetime. This year, the Israeli teens visited us for Hanukkah, and six of our young people – Michael Fogel, Sara Gottfried, Glenn Marks, Abby Solomon, Gil Vizner and Jordan Zeldin had a whirlwind Purim trip to Kiryat Bialik (KB). Accompanied by Steve Schauder, Federation’s Director of Jewish Education, they made powerful connections with Israel and learned more about the vital role our Federation plays there. “I learned so much about the culture of Israeli teenagers, and I was surprised to find out how similar we all were - even though we live halfway across the world from each other!” - Abby Solomon “The Jewish Roots experience has opened my eyes to the wonders of Israel and its people. I have gained a new perspective on Israeli political affairs as well as Judaism. Israel has demonstrated to me that an amalgam of different people can harmoniously unify under a common nation, religion, and promise to create a beautiful society.” – Jordan Zeldin

P2K Women’s Exchange New friendships began in our current P2K Women’s Exchange when six women arrived in Boca Raton last year to celebrate Purim with their new “soul sisters”. The women stayed very much in touch via Facebook and video conferences. Then, during a remarkable week this past October, Mission Chair Rebecca Appelbaum, Rabbi Jessica Brockman, Monica Goldstein, Melissa Romero, and Dina Schwartz excitedly visited their sisters in Kiryat Bialik. The women were accompanied by Eliza Prince Atias, Assistant Director of Women’s Philanthropy. Their relationships continue to flourish as they work together to launch a fundraising effort in both communities to benefit children with special needs at the Kadima Elementary School in Kiryat Bialik.

The exchange group visited the playground in KB that was built through fundraising efforts of the previous Women’s Exchange.

The women explored Jerusalem on a walking tour.

The KB women visited us in Boca Raton last year for a Purim celebration.

“The dynamics, power, meaning and depth of the trip were incredible, and will be renewed many times over by this group and their continued connections and involvement.” Rabbi Jessica Brockman “We are forever friends! Sisters and benefactors of a great relationship.” Dina Schwartz

Enjoying a special night out in Jerusalem.

The women visited and cooked lunch together at the Ethiopian National Project Youth Outreach Center in KB 43

Inclusion and Our Jewish Community Inclusion is about community, about membership, about relationships, and about development. One of the goals of the Department of Special Needs Services at the Jewish Federation of SPBC is to provide more inclusive educational experiences to children with diverse abilities in a setting that enhances the strengths and supports the needs of all the children; and provides children with opportunities to build memberships and establish relationships. The Federation is working with the Jewish day schools to enhance the competence and confidence of professionals and families to support the education of all students. More than 7,500 locals of all ages kept the Mizner Park Amphitheater overflowing with love and nachas, inspiring music and joyful children, tie-dyed t-shirts, and the harmony, strength and vibrancy of a diverse and united Jewish community. It was Fedstock: Two Days of Love and Nachas, on December 18 and 19. The spirit and goodwill spilled far out of the amphitheater, through instrumental partnerships with dozens of local synagogues, schools and organizations; sponsors, underwriters and vendors; volunteers ages 17 to 88; the Jewish Federations of Broward County, Palm Beach County and Greater Miami; and widespread media coverage throughout the area. Matisyahu in Concert Saturday afternoon’s torrential rains gave way to starshine, as 2,500 concertgoers packed – and rocked – the house. The power, joy and pure spirit of Matisyahu’s unique sounds pulsated through the dancing crowd and far beyond. Afterward, Matis met with some loyal fans and VIPs backstage.

Teen Pre-Concert Program A pre-Matisyahu concert Havdalah program brought together 100 teen leaders and their advisors, in partnership with the Jewish Student Union and numerous synagogues, day schools, youth organizations and the Jewish Forums held at area high schools. These Teen VIPs were also personally greeted by Matisyahu after the concert. Jewish Community Festival Sunday’s free festival drew 2,700 people of all ages. Onstage were live music with JewJamm, Zumba and Woodstock co-creator Artie Kornfeld. Children played and learned in the “Smiles by Dr. Peter Wohlgemuth Kid Zone,” at 12 hands-on Jewish cultural learning activities presented by a dozen local synagogues, schools and agencies; they also climbed a rock wall, twirled hula hoops, danced and more. Grown-ups shopped with more than 25 vendors in a lively tented “shuk” marketplace, noshed on kosher treats, and learned about more than 25 synagogues, Jewish schools, agencies and organizations. Dudu Fisher in Concert The amphitheater filled again on Sunday, as 2,300 were enraptured by Dudu Fisher’s performance in the clear, crisp night. Fisher’s stories and renditions of Broadway classics to Hebrew and Yiddish favorites brought the crowd to laughter and tears, as well as to their feet for multiple standing ovations and encores. Later, Dudu enlivened the VIP Meet & Greet at the Boca Raton Museum of Art next to the amphitheater. Major Gifts Reception Dudu Fisher also appeared at an elegant Major Gifts VIP Pre-Concert Cocktail Reception at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. The Federation’s Major Gifts Division is generously sponsored by Kaplan, Krauss & Levine LLC, One Thousand Ocean, Proskauer, and Steinberg Global Asset Management.
