Welcome to Chai Life LET’S BUILD COMMUNITY… TOGETHER Things are looking up at Federation – literally – as our Annual Campaign is increasing, our Foundation is growing and Sinai Residences, the largest capital project since the construction of our South Campus, is rising from the ground. It is with great pride and optimism as the new Board Chair that I am calling upon every member of our Jewish community to help build on these successes. Let’s join together and embark on a new era of possibilities – one that takes us even farther forward in caring for others and sustaining Jewish life locally, in Israel and throughout the world. To those who have supported Federation’s vital work, I thank you and urge you to spread the word to others. To those who have not yet joined our Federation family, I invite you to support our campaign… volunteer your time... join us on a mission… or create a Jewish legacy. The opportunities are endless. Your involvement is welcome and essential. To all of you, thank you for the opportunity to serve this incredible Jewish community of ours. Let’s continue to build it… bigger, brighter and stronger!

FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH I often refer to Federation as a “link”… connecting our past to the present, one generation to the next and all of us to each other. As Jews, we are all interconnected, and the stronger the links, the greater the community. Our Jewish community is making those vital connections in more and more meaningful ways. There couldn’t be a stronger link from past to the present than new Board Chair Al Gortz. It was around Al’s law office conference table that our Federation was founded nearly 35 years ago. Today, he sits at the head of our community table with the same sense of purpose and drive. Alongside him are bright young leaders linking to our Jewish future. Our strongest link as a community is the “promise of tomorrow” that extends far beyond our board rooms and our bustling Jewish campus, where Sinai Residences is rising from the ground. I urge you to become a strong link in the Federation community as we continue to grow and fulfill this promise. B’Shalom,

AL GORTZ: STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE To use a metaphor from baseball, his favorite pastime, it would be safe to say that the life of new Federation Board Chair Al Gortz touches all the bases. At home plate is Jane, his childhood next-door neighbor, high school sweetheart and wife of 47 years, with whom he has built a wonderful family and legacy of giving on a strong Jewish foundation, starting with their daughter Alison, son-in-law Michael Gross, and continuing with their two granddaughters, Danielle and Jessica. On the bases are his successful career as an attorney and partner with Proskauer… a commitment to community leadership that has spanned nearly four decades, including Federation from its inception… and, of course, his beloved New York Yankees. Al has often quoted Yankee greats as he moved up the ladder of leadership to the ultimate board vote that named him Chair at the Federation Annual Meeting on April 8 – a day when he considered himself to be in Lou Gehrig’s immortal words “the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” But it was probably a quote of the head-shaking variety, courtesy of Yogi Berra, that best summarizes the era that Al enters as the organization’s new volunteer leader. “It’s déjà vu all over again.” The state of Federation today is strikingly similar to what it was in 1979, when a 34-year-old rising star at Proskauer joined a small team of local community leaders seeking to break away from the Palm Beach Federation with the goal of better serving the needs of Jews in Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Highland Beach. The legal documents, in fact, were signed in Al’s law office and the growth of the Jewish community since then has been nothing short of a grand slam as the Jewish population has burgeoned from 15,000 to 130,000 and Federation has moved from a tiny storefront to a sprawling 100-acre campus, the largest of its kind in the U.S. As Al stated in his Annual Meeting speech, “After five economically challenging years, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County is once again on solid fiscal ground with an Annual Campaign on the rise and our Foundation’s pledge of ‘Promises Kept’ resonating in every corner of this community. We have a new cadre of young leaders working at all levels of governance – giving of their time and resources. Community partners are connecting with Federation as never before. And we are doing something we haven’t done in a long time – we are building again – with the Sinai Residences – adding to our diverse portfolio of community services.” As Federation Board Chair, Al sits on the Board of Managers of CCRC Development, LLC for Sinai Residences, which is rising from the ground as majestically as the new Yankee Stadium, further fulfilling the vision of Federation’s team of founders nearly 35 years ago. “I was able to get involved at a young age because the community was new and anyone with the time, energy and commitment could make a significant impact,” he recalls. “There were not a lot of hierarchies back then. It was a fortunate set of circumstances. I feel the same sense of excitement today as I did back in 1979. We again have the same types of opportunities to continue to build a community that is now in its early adulthood.”
Continued on Page 41
“Imagine what this community could be like if no child was left hungry; if no frail senior was left without proper care; if every Jewish family that wanted a Jewish education for their children could access it; if our entire Jewish community of all ages felt that special connection to Israel and stood in solidarity and support. That is our Strawberry Fields, our Here Comes the Sun. And my personal mission is to work with all of you to make sure our Federation’s vital work is on everyone’s lips, on everyone’s minds and in everyone’s hearts.” - Matt Levin, President & CEO
“Thirty-five years ago with a Jewish population of 15,000 and great excitement, we embarked on this journey. As the Beatles would say, I’ve Got that Feeling
Again. Our campaign and endowments are increasing. Young leaders are involved at all levels. Community partners are connecting as never before. And we’re building again, with Sinai Residences. Let’s join together in this new era of possibilities to further engage our 130,000 Jewish neighbors.”

When we look at all our Federation has accomplished over the past three dynamic years, much can be explained by taking a look at who was steering at the helm. Ellen R. Sarnoff has been serving our Jewish community with her whole heart, soul and New York drive since she moved to South Florida in 1993.

To the great good fortune of our Federation and our community, she brought every bit of that experience and wisdom along with her trademark perseverance, dignity and verve to her remarkable three years as Chair of our Board.

“Ryan has blossomed since he started attending Camp Kavod. Our staff and I are proud of his enormous growth socially, emotionally, and recreationally. He demonstrates confidence in embracing new activities that have become part of his life.” Marianne Jacobs, ~ Director of JCC Special Needs Programs.
Bringing special
joy
through camp… Ryan, age 8, is about to enjoy his fourth summer of the swimming, gymnastics, field trips, and crafts he loves. But if not for the Adolph & Rose Levis JCC’s Marleen Forkas Camp Kavod, Ryan would likely miss his chance at summer camp. And without the JCC’s other Helene & Roy Schwedelson Special Needs Programs, he’d miss out on many programs and activities that have enriched his life. With Ryan’s early autism diagnosis, his parents searched for places where he would thrive. They found it all on the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County campus. The largest full-day special needs camp in Palm Beach County, Camp Kavod serves campers ages 4-22. Their days are filled with the highest quality programming, as professional staff enable each camper to have fun while acquiring essential life skills. Ryan’s mom Jenn loves the, “inclusion activities that give campers the chance to use the beautiful campus.” Ryan’s family is also thrilled with his year-round participation in the other special needs programs on campus. He receives a Jewish education at Otzar Sunday School, builds social and fitness skills at Fit & Fun Sports, and enjoys bike rides with his family on his adapted tricycle provided by Project Ride. “Camp Kavod has made the greatest impact in our lives. Everyone says hi to Ryan and shares in his milestones. Our family is grateful for this experience and happy to be part of the JCC community,” says Jenn, “I want to guarantee that Camp Kavod and all the special needs programs are there forever.”
Graduating
to
Jewish leadership… Elyse and Melanie are graduating from high school, ready to take on the world. With knowledge and values deeply embedded through day school educations, these extraordinary young women are wellprepared for college as well as Jewish life and leadership.
Elyse and Melanie are grateful for their Jewish foundation, and plan to continue making a difference. They thank Federation for its strong support of their schools, and enjoy seeing students and Federation “come together as one Jewish community.” Elyse used her love of Israel as a springboard for involvement at Weinbaum Yeshiva High School. She inspired others by leading WIPAC (Weinbaum Israel Public Affairs Committee), attending policy conferences, and organizing Israel Education Week. By creating the Freshman Mentoring program, Elyse feels she proved, “WYHS cares about each student and teaches us to care about others as family.” She also feels that, “My teachers ingrained the love of Torah, Judaism, community, and Israel that will carry me through for the rest of my life.” “Elyse represents the best our school stands for. I am proud of her leadership, all she has achieved, and her accomplishments for our community,”
JDC’s support was the difference between life and death for our family and we are so grateful.”
~ Leonid, Marianna’s father
says Shimmie Kaminetsky, WYHS Executive Director. “I know that she will continue to shine and contribute to the Jewish community in many ways in the future.” Melanie honed her skills as Key Club President and through Israel Club, tutoring and RPAC (Rosenblatt Public Affairs Committee) at the Claire and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt High School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy. “The opportunity to get involved and make a difference is so rewarding. I’ve had close, wonderful relationships with my teachers and experiences I couldn’t have in public school,” Melanie says. “I plan to remain connected and involved with the Jewish community in college and afterward.” “Melanie is an ideal graduate of our high school. She’s a knowledgeable and responsible citizen of the world, committed to Jewish values and lifelong learning,” says Principal Helena Levine. “Her innate desire to be connected to Judaism and her people has been apparent through all she does. Melanie’s quiet leadership and strength will take her far in life.”
Answering family
crisis
in Ukraine At age 14, Marianna loves performing and practicing music at the JCC in Mariupol, a city of about 500,000 in southeastern Ukraine. Because of the escalating crisis in the region, her father Leonid was furloughed
from his job at the airport, and her mother Elena is unable to find work. Their shaky situation hit an unbearable low when young Marianna was hospitalized with a stroke. When her treatable condition required medicines and expensive tests, Marianna’s devastated parents found themselves unable to pay for her critical medical expenses. Thankfully, through the regular operations of Federation’s overseas beneficiary agencies, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), Marianna’s family is getting the help they desperately need with medical bills as well as groceries and clothing. With our help in partnership with these agencies, it’s hopeful that Marianna will recover and once again perform in the spotlight onstage at the Mariupol JCC. Marianna is just one of thousands of vulnerable Ukrainian Jews. With strong existing infrastructures and increased services, Federation’s overseas beneficiary agencies are committed to assisting during crises as well as in quieter times. To support ongoing vital programs and services in the Ukraine through Federation’s Annual Campaign, visit jewishboca.org/donate. Supplemental contributions to help our overseas partners meet emergency needs in the Ukraine may be made at jewishboca.org/ukraine.

NEW INITIATIVES
New Partnerships Open More Doors to Community Ever striving to share our message and enhance our vital work, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County reached even farther and wider into the community this season. With help from some visionary donors, we cultivated relationships with new community partners, including Festival of the Arts Boca and Boca West Foundation. Making new connections, together we are building a stronger, even more extraordinary community. Facilitated by Donna and Andy Robins, our Federation joined with Festival of the Arts for the Itzhak Perlman concert at Mizner Park Amphitheater on March 6. In addition, Federation’s Department of Jewish Education provided transportation and coordinated a unique opportunity for local day school students to attend Perlman’s fully staged rehearsal with Festival Orchestra Boca.

We are also proud that our Federation’s children’s services became a 2014 grantee of Boca West Foundation. With special thanks to the Foundation Chair Arthur Adler and to Federation donor Aubrey Strul, their March 31 Charity Golf Challenge and April 1 Concert for the Children featuring Diana Ross are helping many children through Federation’s beneficiary agencies. BUILDING LEADERS AND COMMUNITY This season, our Federation launched the Jewish Community Leadership Institute (JCLI) with a class of 22 Emerging Leaders from our Federation and community partner organizations. JCLI also offered programs for Federation and agency professionals and lay leaders. Chaired by Carol Smokler and Thomas O. Katz this groundbreaking, vital investment in our community’s present and future is sponsored and underwritten by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. JCLI’s goals are to prepare leaders to excel in their positions and to foster collaboration and partnership among our local Jewish organizations. Their first Emerging Leaders sessions featured “Models of Leadership,” presented by Rabbi Lauren Berkun of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, a center of transformative thinking and teaching that addresses the major challenges facing the Jewish people; “Insights into Jewish Values” with Rabbi Irwin Kula of CLAL - the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, joined by Tom Katz; and “Reaching the Jewish Community of the 21st Century: A Leadership Workshop,” with Rabbi Sid Schwarz of CLAL. In addition, Rabbis Kula and Schwarz as well as Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman, President of the Shalom Hartman Institute, presented substantial programs on key research, trends and programming for current Federation and beneficiary agency leaders. Full of inspiration as well as information, these large sessions have ignited profound discussions about our community and planning. Three more Emerging Leaders sessions are planned for the fall & winter, and a Newly Engaged participants group will be added to JCLI. For more information about the Jewish Community Leadership Institute (JCLI), contact Elana Ostroff at elanao@bocafed.org or 561.852.6080.

campaign As FRD Chair, and in my own philanthropy, I am passionate about Jewish continuity and well-being both now and into the future. So my recent trip to Poland with our March of the Living delegation was profoundly powerful on many levels. While our community sends teens to the March each year, this spring I joined 77 local adults on a parallel journey. Accompanied by survivors, rabbis and educators, we bore witness to remnants of thriving Jewish communities and at sites of the Shoah’s destruction. And we triumphantly marched from Auschwitz to Birkenau on Yom HaShoah with 11,000 people from throughout the world before our delegations joyously headed to Israel. Along the way, I made new friends also committed to keeping these memories alive. Each new relationship forged and each young person inspired and educated strengthens our community and our people today and tomorrow. How proud I am of our Federation’s support for the March through our Annual Campaign and our endowments.
Those who know my lifelong commitment to our global Jewish family will not be surprised that I’m writing from the JDC Centennial Celebration mission to Israel and France – and why I return from each mission overseas even more mindful of how critical our Federation’s work is, far beyond our own community. There is no greater inspiration than seeing our dollars at work and the positive impact of our funded projects on those they serve. There is no greater motivation to pursue our work than to realize how much more can be achieved with additional funds. I urge you to experience this for yourselves by joining a mission. As we see today in Ukraine, our ongoing global involvement is critical. Our beneficiary agencies JDC and JAFI have been able to respond immediately and sustain the most vulnerable Jews caught in the turmoil.
May we go from strength to strength,
I am proud of our community for understanding the meaning of K’lal Israel. Thank you for participating in this sacred work.

EJP Season Wraps with Miami Art & Style Our Emerging Jewish Philanthropists (EJP) celebrated their second successful season with a unique evening out. From the moment they boarded the luxury “Limbusine” on May 22, these exceptional younger families/households who contribute a minimum of $10,000 to the Annual Campaign showed just how much they’ve become an exciting, inspiring community. Their destination was the new world-class Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). Enroute they enjoyed sushi and drinks, and Bryan Drowos shared information about his spring mission to Azerbaijan and Turkey. In addition to its provocative exhibits, the museum visit featured an architectural tour of the stunning PAMM building and drinks on the terrace with a spectacular view. Dessert and stories from Helene Paul’s recent Partnership 2Gether Women’s Exchange week with Israeli “sisters” made for a quick return back on the Limbusine.

On March 30, hundreds of dedicated Super Sunday volunteers made their efforts count at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County‘s annual Super Sunday phone-a-thon. Together, they raised spirits, awareness, and – by the end of the day an impressive $501,990. With community support still being counted in the days that followed, the pledges kept coming in and adding up, as local residents continued to respond with resources to help meet the needs of the Jewish community locally and around the world.
“Everyone truly did count on Super Sunday. People of all ages and stages of life, of all Jewish backgrounds and from throughout South Palm Beach County joined in. They came together to help Federation reach out and count on the support of this community. The impressive turnout of teens to seniors and everyone in between made a great difference for our Jewish community and our people.” -Eric Lebersfeld
The spirit of community extended across ages. It was a family affair for the Co-chairs, Jill & Jeff Shavitz and Eric & Susan Lebersfeld, whose parents and siblings proudly cheered them on during a full day on the phones. Working the phones during three twohour shifts throughout the day and coming together for meals, volunteers kept the energy high in Zinman Hall as calls were made, pledges were excitedly announced, great raffle prizes were awarded, and the community synergy was palpable. Large delegations from AEPi fraternity in the morning and our local teens in the afternoon boosted spirits as well as the fundraising efforts. The Super Sunday Mitzvah Project Food Drive added another dimension, collecting non-perishable food and personal toiletries to stock the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services.

A WINNING BEGINNING...
WALT FRAZIER LEADS OFF INAUGURAL MEN’S PROGRAM
I
t was a night for the highlight reel. Our Federation scored big when basketball legend Walt “Clyde” Frazier tipped off the inaugural Men’s Programming event, captivating the crowd of 165 committed, action-driven, community-minded men on April 30 at Woodfield Country Club. The evening was the first in a series of engaging experiences and original programming designed to build a men’s team of dedicated, philanthropic leaders to champion the Jewish community locally and globally. Goal oriented, community driven and inspired to take action, the men’s programming group is creating exciting opportunities for men. As they build their community of giving together, they’ll be exploring interests from sports, music, gourmet food and wine appreciation to travel missions.
Frazier’s legions of fans – and Federation’s founding Men’s Committee - span the generations. As intended, the Hall of Famer brought his legendary “A game” to unite men of all ages with his inimitable style and shining example. Matthew Elfenbein, an FAU Sophomore active in Hillel served as the enthusiastic emcee. For more information about men’s activities at Federation, contact Felice Naide at felicen@bocafed.org or 561.852.6084.

Dorothy Seaman Department of Women’s Philanthropy Continuing Our Journey Together Several weeks ago I accepted the gavel as Women’s Philanthropy Chair full of excitement and happiness. With so much to accomplish for those who must depend on us in the year ahead, I am grateful for the many amazing women walking alongside me on this journey. We travel in the footsteps of the extraordinary women whose work we continue. From personal conversations to powerful events, together we’ll be educating and engaging many more women throughout our community who are unaware of the vital needs faced by our neighbors right here and our Jewish family around the world. The road to success is always under construction. The pride we take in our work; the enthusiasm, passion and commitment we share; and the knowledge that the funds we raise and contribute have a powerful effect on countless souls will guide us on a widening path to make our vision a reality. Together, there is no limit to the extraordinary things we can accomplish. From strength to strength,

Women’s Philanthropy Celebrates Leaders as Judi Schuman Takes the Gavel
I
n support, celebration and sisterhood, 85 caring, dedicated women came together for the Dorothy Seaman Department of Women’s Philanthropy 2014-15 Board Installation. They gathered for the brunch program on March 31, 2014 at the Levis JCC Sandler Center on the Federation campus. Following an inspiring d’var Torah from Debra Halperin, Installation Chair, Margaret Kottler, led the moving ceremony that honored leaders both current and past. Special recognition was given to Emily Grabelsky, outgoing Chair of Women’s Philanthropy; Judi Schuman, incoming Chair of Women’s Philanthropy; and Rebecca Appelbaum, recipient of the 2014 Dorothy Seaman Leadership Award.
“We recognize all who have led the way and continue to share their wisdom and skills to help us achieve our mission. Yesterday’s leaders give way to tomorrow’s leaders and with each generation, we can look at the world with new eyes and innovate new approaches.” -Margaret Kottler Turning over the gavel after two years as Chair, Emily Grabelsky celebrated Women’s Philanthropy’s accomplishments, including an increased campaign, maintaining the greatest number of Lion of Judah Endowments in North America, the growing Pomegranate giving level, and successful outreach events that have brought new engagement and gifts.
“I am honored to be standing up here today, but I am not really standing in front of you. I am standing with you, beside you, intertwined in your arms, shoulder to shoulder with each of you, my role models, mentors and friends.” -Emily Grabelsky
Federation President & CEO, Matthew C. Levin, recognized the women for their dedication and success through many challenges. He also thanked Wells Fargo Private Bank for their generous 2014 sponsorship of the Department of Women’s Philanthropy.

Young Adult Division (YAD) YAD Around the World Meet the new friend I made in Baku, Azerbaijan on a recent JFNA National Young Leadership Cabinet mission through Federation. Aytadzh Akmedov, 10, and her brother Bakhruz, 15, dream of their future from the tiny, dilapidated, uninsulated apartment they share with their elderly grandmother and out of work parents. Every day they risk their safety to climb past moldy walls and exposed wiring down the bending, rotten wood beams held by rusty nails that pass for stairs to the ground floor where they share a virtual outhouse. How could this Jewish family survive and look forward on their government pension of only $170 per month? They can’t, but fortunately there are Jewish people including young adults like you and me who care. Our dollars do great work not only in South Palm Beach County; every year a portion of our Annual Campaign helps our Jewish family in more than 70 countries– including Azerbaijan. Because of us, Aytadzh’s family receives a card for food purchases, winter relief for heat, and access to Baku’s Jewish community center. So I ask: think of your many comforts and choices, then remember the difference we make for the Akmedovs and so many others here at home and around the world - and how great it feels when you can help. B’Shalom,
Young Adults Mix, Mingle and “Help the Hungry” at Spring Happy Hours A dynamic crowd of Jewish adults in their 20s to early 40s got together for YAD’s regular Wandering Happy Hour at Blue Martini in Boca Raton on April 24. The setting sun on the outdoor patio provided atmosphere for guests to sip cocktails and catch up with old friends while meeting new ones. The energy and excitement ran high as they heard about future YAD events and summer missions. Then it was Happy Hour with a twist on May 22 at the Jacobson Family Food Pantry in Delray Beach, a project of Ruth and Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS). The unusual setting offered the opportunity to spend an evening helping local residents in need of groceries. Young adults brought food to donate and toured the Pantry. They learned more about their impact on our community from Emily Einhorn, YAD Social Action Chair, Anne & Norman Jacobson as well as Cindy Orbach Nimhauser and Lori Warner of JFS. After preparing customized food packages for client deliveries, with the satisfaction of hands-on helping, the young adults enjoyed fresh drinks and snacks as they socialized and networked.

Young Adults Connect, Explore & Celebrate at TribeFest From March 16-18, a delegation from South Palm Beach County enjoyed comradeship with over 1,300 Jewish young adults ages 22-45 from across North America at JFNA’s TribeFest in New Orleans. Through presentations by dynamic leaders in politics, entertainment, music, art, food, religion and other aspects of Jewish life, TribeFest offered
attendees many ways to connect to their own Judaism and how they see themselves as part of the community. Together, our group participated in a volunteer opportunity through ReNEW Schools, by reading and providing books to underserved PK-2 students at Schaumburg Elementary School in New Orleans.
See how our travelers described their TribeFest journey: “TribeFest made me even more excited to return to my local community and plan new events, meet new people and get something new started. The breakout sessions allowed me to dig deeper into the issues that matter most to me.” - Emily Einhorn
“The highlights of my amazing TribeFest experience were meeting Joshua Malina of Scandal on ABC, creating new and lasting friendships with people from all over the US, and the fantastic breakout sessions.” - Melanie Tolchin
“TribeFest was a fun and innovative way to reconnect with my Jewish Identity, make unforgettable friends and connections, and hear inspirational talks and discussions.” - Tara Stiel
“The best part was the excitement everyone had in meeting one another and uniting as a young Jewish community. Thanks so much to the Federation for giving me the opportunity to attend Tribefest!” - Jeff Wong

business & professional Division (B&P) Growing Business and Community It’s hard to believe that our B&P Division’s second season is drawing to a close. Even more remarkable is how quickly we’ve lived up to our tagline, “Networking Redefined.” We’ve been privileged to work with our dynamic inaugural B&P Co-chairs, Gary Lesser and Bob Marton. From their impressive start, we’ll be working to reach even higher milestones of networking and fundraising. We’re looking forward to a new 2014-15 lineup of world-class Industry Icon speakers, to a second year of building business acumen and community through INSPIRE Mentoring, to watching more and more women redefine Business Casual, and to growing our generous cabinet far beyond its 50+ committed members. B&P INSPIRE Business Mentoring Pairs Celebrate Success of Inaugural Season INSPIRE, B&P’s new mentoring initiative, has been motivating, cultivating and equipping rising stars of business and philanthropy to lead our Jewish community to great new heights. In its first season, INSPIRE paired twelve of South Palm Beach County’s most accomplished entrepreneurs with some of the area’s most promising professionals for rewarding one-on-one and group exchanges. Capping off their success, INSPIRE mentors and mentees along with their spouses enjoyed an elegant cocktail and dinner reception at the Azura Clubhouse on April 6. Federation President & CEO Matthew C. Levin and INSPIRE Chair Rick Paul thanked the participants and presented certificates and awards. Matt also recognized Rick for his dedicated leadership.

Business Casual: Girls Night Out Gets a Greater Purpose B&P has reinvented the term Business Casual for women in South Palm Beach County this season with a series of innovative, casual, activity-based networking opportunities exclusively for women looking to build their professional and community alliances. Leaving the formalities of work back at the office, this growing group of dynamic women has enjoyed five exciting evening programs. Through Business Casual, they’ve created their own masterpieces at Vino Van Gogh, practiced the fundamentals of sushi rolling at Asia, enjoyed Making Passover Personal by creating seder plates at Craft It, and learned to bake challah at the Federation campus. Chaired by Tracy Kawa and Stephanie Midler, Business Casual headed to 365 SPA on May 29 to wrap its successful first season of learning, laughing and eating together while building business connections and a stronger community.

Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation Growing to Keep Our Promise Our Foundation’s ramped up efforts to build a legacy for our Jewish community are yielding results. In three years, our unrestricted endowment fund has grown from $5.8 to $8.3 million as more people keep their promise for the future. JJCF is also contributing more today to the Annual Campaign and special projects. We are grateful for the dedicated, skilled interim leadership of Steve Rose during this time of needed growth. Amid our success, it’s clear that more resources are needed to further secure our community’s well-being. Therefore, we are excited to announce that JJCF will welcome a new full-time Vice President when Cathrine Fischer Schwartz joins us in August. With 24 years of outstanding Federation experience, Cathy is currently President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford - where she has partnered with Hartford’s JCF, synagogues and agencies on an extremely successful community-wide endowment initiative. We deeply thank our lay and professional leadership for bringing us to this important transition, and look forward to Steve’s continued support as we open the next chapter of JJCF growth.

BUILDING LEGACIES ACROSS THE COMMUNITY
Gail K. Sack | Not long ago, Gail K. Sack made Boca Raton her home – and our Jewish community couldn’t be more grateful. A vibrant, active widow, Gail settled right in with her standard poodle, Molly, and became involved with our JJCF and Congregation B’nai Israel. A seasoned philanthropist, energy therapist and lay leader who traveled the world as a retail executive, Gail came to us from Greater Hartford, where she served as Federation Women’s Campaign Chair and as a leader at the Jewish Community Foundation and her synagogue. A veteran of (so far) fifteen missions to Israel and around the world, Gail received the Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award in Israel and was a National Women’s Philanthropy board member. To ensure that her love and support will always be there for her Jewish family, Gail has established a generous bequest through our JJCF including Congregation B’nai Israel in Boca Raton and our Federation. Through her LOJE gift and her unrestricted endowment fund for our Federation, Gail will be recognized as a member of the JFNA Star of David Society. Gail credits her profound commitment to her grandfather from Lithuania, a UJA Man of the Year and synagogue president. “My greatest joy is to give time and share my passion to build a Jewish future for our community and our people,” she says. “That must be our legacy.”
April & Roger Leavy | April and Roger Leavy moved to South Palm Beach County from New York in 1989 and, as donors and leaders, they’ve been demonstrating their growing commitment to the Jewish community ever since. Recently, they took their generosity to a new level with a three-part Legacy gift. Currently our Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy Campaign Chair, April knows her Lion of Judah Endowment will make her a Lion forever. The Leavys have also endowed Ruth and Norman Rales Jewish Family Services in honor of their parents’ interests, as well as B’nai Torah Congregation, where Roger served as President. “Our multifaceted gift perpetuates the values we received from our parents,” says April. “We believe in tradition and in preserving our Jewish heritage.” April continues, “The more invested we’ve become in the community, the more important it was to ensure that our care and support would continue. As relatively young business owners in manufacturing, an insurance policy was a wonderful way to leave our mark for the future regardless of our income later in life. And we hope to eventually take care of even more of our beloved community.”

They are among the remarkable 271 women of our community, and the largest group of its kind in the nation, whose endowments have ensured that their Lion of Judah gifts will continue to make a difference to countless people in need locally, in Israel and overseas forever. Led by Barbara Werner, Chair of Women’s Planned Giving and Endowments, they memorialized the LOJEs who have passed on, and celebrated newcomers to this powerful, prestigious sisterhood. This year’s Ultimate Thank You celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the LOJE program. Guests were encouraged to bring a cherished object or photo that helped them become the Jewish woman they are today. Guest speaker Amy Hirshberg Lederman led the group through an inspirational and interactive program, My Grandmother’s Candlesticks: Passing the Flame from One Generation to Another. The women also heard from Richard Steinberg, JJCF Chair, and Anne Jacobson, Federation Vice Chair of FRD.

Al notes that his work and philanthropic lives have always complemented each other. “Working hard to build a legal practice was never enough for me,” he says. “Personally, I felt I needed to serve the community in a meaningful way. If our history has taught us anything, it has taught us that if Jews don’t help other Jews, who will?” Swinging for the fences has brought many awards and leadership roles for Al, including past Chair of the Foundation. He has received both the James and Marjorie Baer Outstanding Young Leadership Award and the James H. Nobil Community Leadership Award. He has been the Mitzvah Society Honoree of the Jewish Community Foundation’s Professional Advisory Committee. Al has also received the Tree of Life Award from the Jewish National Fund, the Learned Hand Award from the American Jewish Committee and the Silver Medallion Brotherhood Award from what was then known as the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Now that he is the Chair of the Board, Al foresees a new era of possibilities and is calling on all generations of the Jewish community – from top-prospects of the younger generations to seasoned veterans alike – to pitch in and work together. As Yankee great Babe Ruth once said, “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.” Al stresses the importance of teamwork and sees it as crucial to the Federation’s continued success in tapping the unlimited potential of the local Jewish community and facing the inevitable challenges of the future.

JWF: Improving Lives for Jewish Women and Children In 2014, the Jewish Women’s Foundation of South Palm Beach County allocated $170,000 to nine projects in our community and in Israel, through a careful selection process by the JWF trustees. Here’s how four of these programs are changing lives for young women down the street and in our homeland: Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach - Jewell: Jewish Empowered Women Exemplifying Leadership And Learning: Through JEWELL, JWF is building our future leaders among local Jewish college women through Hillel. They engage in spirited discussions on contemporary Jewish issues, as well as in activism, advocacy and service projects that hone their leadership skills and philanthropic interests. Serving as role models and force multipliers on campus, they will be well-equipped to become our community leaders as young adults and beyond. Kol Israel Haverim - Cracking The Glass Ceiling – Promoting Young Women To Science For a second year, JWF is helping this unique program give young women from impoverished areas in Israel the tools to advance to scholastic excellence with emphasis on math and science. Through empowerment, role-modeling, meetings with successful women, and scholastic assistance, these students are on their way to a better and brighter future.
Center for Women’s Justice - Skill Building And Outreach Initiative For Civil Action Against Get Abuse: This initiative is enabling JWF to make its mark against GET abuse in Israel by delivering in-depth content to attorneys and academic institutions about the GET issue and targeting diverse new populations. The program also includes seminars and advocacy training, as well as outreach to Russian and Amharic speakers. American Friends of Beit Issie Shapiro - Beit Issie Shapiro’s iPad Project: JWF support for this project is providing cutting-edge services in Israel to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities by breaking down barriers. This use of iPads in educational, therapeutic and recreational context increases the children’s cognitive learning, develops and strengthens their motor skills, and promotes inclusion. Teachers and parents are seeing results at school and at home.

March of Remembrance Unites Christian and Jewish Communities to “Never Forget” Vowing, “Never again,” more than 600 Christians and Jews of all denominations joined Holocaust survivors and their families on the eve of Yom HaShoah, April 27. for a deeply moving ceremony that featured survivors, a concentration camp liberator, a March of the Living participant, Jewish and Christian clergy, and other local dignitaries. The March of Remembrance was planned by the Jewish Community

“In the camps, we promised each other that if we survived we would tell the story and now you are a part of that story.”
“It is vital that Christians stand with the Jewish people to say, 'Never again!' and be reminded of what happens when neighbors do nothing.”
“We are called by G-d in different ways, yet this light we create together can redeem us from the darkness of hate and discord.”

Five years after the release of the New York Times best-selling book, Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle, Israel’s emergence as one of the world’s titans of technology and entrepreneurship comes as no surprise. And in a remarkable opportunity to observe the 66th anniversary of the State of Israel, the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County brought some of Israel’s awe-inspiring contributions to the high-tech revolution right to Boca Raton on May 4 at Lynn University. The first such insiders’ view made available to the public, IMAGINATION ISRAEL brought together more than 600 members of the community for exciting live demonstrations of six innovations. Developed in Israel by leading entrepreneurs and scientists, several of these products are already benefiting consumers worldwide.
"What better way to celebrate Israel than to showcase the phenomenon explored in Start-up Nation with such amazing innovations from Israeli companies?" ~ Andrew Robins, JCRC Co-chair Investment in start-ups and new technologies is also an important way to financially support Israel, said Jonathan Medved. Brought by special arrangement to moderate IMAGINATION ISRAEL as a leader in Israel’s high tech scene, Medved was described in Start-up Nation as “one of Israel’s legendary business ambassadors.”

Israel produces astounding products that are changing the world we all live in for the better. ‘Start-up Nation’ has become a worldwide brand and a source of Jewish pride." ~Jonathan Medved, Moderator Rami Parham, MUV Interactive
What Medved describes as the chutzpah – the daring, cheekiness of Jewish culture that, “along with brains makes the impossible possible” - was evident throughout the program. In a prime example, Moty Avisar, a former Israeli Air Force officer now President and Founder of Surgical Theater, shared how his idea for the company’s software that enables doctors to practice on virtual images of their patients’ brains began when a neurosurgeon overheard Avisar talking about F-16 flight simulator technology in a Cleveland coffee shop.

Local Teens and Adults Return from Life-changing March of the Living Once again, a remarkable group of local high school students has returned from the March of the Living strengthened in their Jewish identities. On April 23, after months of preparation, 55 of them boarded planes to Warsaw to begin the renowned two-week trip that culminates this extraordinary Holocaust education program. This year, 77 adults from their 20s to 80s joined the student for their own powerful parallel journey. Intersecting along the way, both students and adults returned deeply committed to bearing witness to the Shoah and making sure “Never Again” remains far more than a slogan for their own generations and into the future. Accompanied by local Holocaust survivors, educators and Rabbis David Steinhardt, Josh Broide, Robert Silvers, and Yaakov Green they traveled to the depths of the Holocaust in the camps, the ghettos and the remnants of thriving Jewish communities in Poland. And they marched from Auschwitz to Birkenau on Yom HaShoah/ Holocaust Remembrance Day with 11,000 cohorts from 45 countries. From the ashes, they went on to discover the wonders of our modern State of Israel. They made new friends and observed Yom HaZikaron/Israel Memorial Day with poignant ceremonies in our Federation’s Sister City, Kiryat Bialik, toured historic sites, and, joyously celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut/ Israel Independence Day.
“Words cannot do this trip justice. Only by being at the camps and memorials can one get a sense of what our people went through, and our survivors were right there telling their stories. Amid the sadness, nothing is more empowering and meaningful than to touch the sites firsthand while knowing that we Jews prevailed despite the odds. For my wife Nel and me, it confirmed our obligation to pass on this knowledge and continue our traditions for survival of our people in generations to come.” -Jonathan Bloom, whose son Bronsen also traveled with the teen group
Recruitment for the next March (April 12-26, 2015) is getting underway for students entering grades 11 and 12 as well as adults. Visit www.molsouth.org or contact 561.852.6045 or mol@bocafed.org.
“After the main March of the Living, there were 11,000 Jews at Birkenau; even though it was the largest number of Jewish people I’ve ever seen, I realized that we all could have been killed in the same spot 70 years earlier. I definitely returned with new perspectives and a new passion for Judaism and Israel.” -Alana Steinberg, 12th grade 47 CHAILIFE

Israel Comes to Campus for 66th Birthday Celebration With music, dancing, flags, displays and even a visit from the Consul General, the Federation campus celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut, the 66th anniversary of Israel’s statehood on May 6. Amid a sea of blue and white, the ruach emanated from Dedication Plaza where the Department of Jewish Education and Donna Klein Jewish Academy collaborated on a program of professionally led Israeli folk dancing.
Throughout the day, DKJA and Zale Early Childhood Center classes paraded and danced, cheered on by residents of JARC, and Gould and Weinberg senior housing; students from Unicorn Village Academy; campus employees; parents and teachers. Just a few feet away in Zinman Hall, where Consul General Chaim Shacham began the day speaking with students, the classes toured DKJA’s amazing annual Israel for Real interactive exhibits.

561.852.3333 • www.ralesjfs.org Community Groups Brighten Passover for JFS Clients Since 1979, Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS) has been meeting vital community needs through a comprehensive range of help including food and financial assistance, senior services, counseling and mental health care, career and employment services, as well as a wide array of meaningful volunteer opportunities. This spring, through what have become their caring, generous Passover traditions, community groups once again helped ensure that JFS clients would be able to observe the holiday and experience its spirit. For many years, older senior JFS clients have enjoyed the JFS Model Seder. This year, 230 dressed in their best boarded special transportation to what for many is their only opportunity to observe the Passover tradition with companions and a festive meal. Once again, the costs were covered through Boca West’s Jewish Federation volunteers who raised funds through their neighbors; and from Debbie Belford. And, once again, thanks to Addison Reserve residents, Jacobson Family Food Pantry clients were able to observe the holiday for eight days at home. After raising $21,000, volunteers put together Passover food packages at the pantry and learned about the more than 600 neighbors helped by their efforts. Meanwhile, students from Donna Klein Jewish Academy, Hillel Day School, Torah Academy and Weinbaum Yeshiva High School as well as Levis JCC Zale Early Childhood Center conducted their annual pre-Passover food drive as families emptied their cabinets for their holiday and purchased groceries to donate. Students then sorted donations together in the JFS parking lot, and learned how much of a difference they are making to local individuals and families who truly need help to keep from going hungry.

Rabbis Make “A Night of Inspiration” a Night to Remember Through compelling personal stories, Judaic text and tradition, six local rabbis thoroughly engaged hearts as well as heads as they brought together an audience of more than 400 in a profound shared Jewish experience on March 24. Billed as “A Night of Inspiration: Six of Our Community Rabbis: One Night – One Stage – One Hour,” the program at Olympic Heights High School auditorium sounded intriguing with rabbis from Reform, Conservative and Orthodox movements. But “A Night of Inspiration” went far beyond, rivaling the creativity, depth and power of TED Talks as it lived up to its tagline: “We believe passionately in the power of Jewish ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world.”
Developed and moderated by Rabbi Josh Broide, the visionary program featured Rabbi Efrem Goldberg (Boca Raton Synagogue), Rabbi Dan Levin (Temple Beth El), Rabbi Yaakov Gibber (Boca Jewish Center/Shaaray Tefilla), Rabbi David Baum (Congregation Shaarei Kodesh), Rabbi Robert Silvers (Congregation B’nai Israel), and Rabbi David Steinhardt (B’nai Torah Congregation). Together, they represented examples of our community’s remarkable spiritual leadership.
