Welcome to Chai life Welcoming. Engaging. Reaching out like never before! dear Federation Family: I hope 2012 is off to a great start for you. Here at Federation, we are reaching out to our Jewish community in exciting new ways. In this issue of Chai Life, you will read about campaign programs, events and initiatives that welcome residents of all ages to our family. Back by popular demand is our $365 annual “Star” event for women, opening the doors to a new level of giving and participating in community, with a special pomegranate reception. Our metro Division’s new LEADS program is preparing new leaders in their 20s, 30s and 40s to strengthen our Federation’s future. Our JCRC is offering access to an exceptional series of educational programs, about the State of Israel for local schools and organizations through Jerusalem Online university – free of charge through a licensing arrangement. the annual Israel under the Stars celebration promises to exceed last year’s phenomenal turnout of 4,000 at the beautiful Sunset Cove Amphitheater, with activities and entertainment for the whole family. Development of the Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, a new Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), continues to move forward on schedule — with construction to begin before the end of the 2013 calendar year. this impressive undertaking will help alleviate local seniors’ need for housing, healthcare, recreational and social services. Our new community-wide Jewish education series that kicked off with “America’s Rabbi” Shmuley Boteach is just another of the creative ways we continue to engage our Jewish family across South palm Beach County. Our Federation is evolving to meet a diverse range of interests, all the while staying true to our essential mission: furthering the wellbeing of our Jewish family – locally, in Israel and around the world. Here’s to a powerful year of community! Best Regards,

ara, 52, and challenged with developmental disabilities, moved to the Jewish Association for Residential Care in 2001. the move was prompted by her sister Reena, who lived locally and longed for Sara to live near her family after the tragic passing of their brother. Because Sara’s aging parents were no longer able to care for her special needs, Reena recommended JARC.

tragedy struck again when Sara’s beloved mother was killed in a car accident. Devastated, she and her father continued their move to Boca and Sara soon discovered how much she loved the JARC environment. A few months later, Sara’s father died unexpectedly and, more recently, Reena and her family moved to Israel. Suddenly Sara found herself without any family around, in the midst of her grief. the saving grace, Sara says, is JARC. She loves the warm environment, the friends she has made and a routine that suits her. With no one to support her financially, she has essentially become the responsibility of our Jewish community.

Sara is one of many adults who cannot fully care for themselves due to disabilities and whose families are no longer able (or alive) to take care of them. Where would they be without people who care?

She is dedicated to helping others as program Coordinator for Owls for Israel at FAu. “We need to know the issues before we can take a stance,” she said. “Students can’t advocate until they’re educated.”

Soviet Jews like Lyubov would otherwise be left without life’s basic necessities.

L

yubov, 81, lives alone in a two-room apartment in moscow. Lyubov’s father was killed during World War II. Her father was a Rabbi, professor and doctor. After the war she went on to become an award-winning journalist and enjoyed success as a writer. She also got married and had a baby, but her first husband was killed in a plane crash when their son was 8. Lyubov remarried a Soviet diplomat, and her son grew up to become a surgeon. Shortly after he moved to Israel in 1992, her son was killed in a terrorist attack. What you might not expect is that despite a successful 40-year career and with a diplomat for a husband, Lyubov cannot afford food, home care and medication. She is not alone. With the fall of the Soviet union, those who worked hard all of their lives in the name of the State are left without any savings and only small pensions. there is no government safety net, not even for basic essentials. thanks to the Chesed welfare centers supported by Federation dollars, Lyubov receives meals on wheels, 12 hours of home care each month, fresh food packages, and emergency funds for urgent medical needs. Words cannot describe her thankfulness. 160,000 seniors in the Former Soviet union need similar kinds of services. Without the support of their Jewish family around the world, they would be left stranded.

A 21st century retirement lifestyle is coming to

Boca Raton.

Retirement communities being developed today reflect a brand new approach to living that is nothing like that found in communities of the past! These new communities reflect tremendous innovation in the entire concept of what senior living communities should be–and could be. The proposed Sinai Residences of Boca Raton will be a state-of-the-art model of this contemporary thinking in retirement community design, programming and lifestyle. Planning is well underway for the development of this community which will be located just off of Glades Road at the northeast corner of 95th Avenue on 22 acres on the campus of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. The community is sponsored by Federation CCRC Development, LLC, a not-for-profit entity. One of the community’s most valuable features will be the plan to offer Life Care. Only Life Care provides guaranteed access to a full continuum of the highest quality, on-site assisted living, memory support and skilled nursing care, if ever needed, and the financial certainty of predictable monthly expenses for the rest of your life. As a resident, if you ever need care, you know where you’ll receive it, who will provide it and what it will cost. For a community to keep pace with the vibrant, active, engaged lifestyles today’s seniors lead, it must also offer a comprehensive approach to enhancing every aspect of their lives–the physical, social, intellectual, spiritual, emotional and occupational dimensions. Services, amenities, programs, activities–even architecture and design–must address all of these areas.

Studies have shown that seniors who stay active and engaged in all of these areas can reduce the risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease by 75% and can stave off general health decline versus those who live out their lives in increased isolation in their own homes. Engaged seniors experience achievement by doing things like learning a new language, taking up painting, or learning to play a musical instrument. A supportive community lifestyle contributes to healthier, happier lives. Those who choose Sinai Residences for their future will find many new opportunities to explore the world around them. They can experience the satisfaction of volunteering, or the fulfillment of studying a subject that always fascinated them, but they never had the time to pursue. Restaurantstyle dining options will answer their desire to eat healthy. Innovative fitness programs and equipment designed specifically for seniors will be at their fingertips. Residents will also find cultural pursuits such as art, theatre, dance, crafts and avocational workshops. Lectures and classes may even be integrated with opportunities to travel, creating a complete social and intellectual experience.

Call (561) 477-6690 today to schedule an appointment to discover how Sinai Residences will provide the vibrant, energetic, engaged, 21st century approach to retirement living that simply does not exist in the area today.

Campaign In my role as FRD Chair, I am enjoying the day to day involvement with some amazing people — those wishing to support our community’s urgent needs today and those wishing to leave a Jewish legacy for the future. As I engage with donors and Federation’s lay leaders, I find my own commitment growing, and my hope for the future strengthened. It’s what inspired my husband Norman and me to link our name with the Jewish Community Foundation, and it’s what has heightened my sense of purpose. While it is so important to make sure today’s urgent needs are met, it is equally important to ensure a brighter future for our grandchildren and, G-d willing, their grandchilden. What I most wish to let people know is that there are so many ways you can leave a meaningful legacy in our community— and some do not require a large investment upfront. The more you learn about legacy giving, the more accessible you may find it to be. B’Shalom,

Are you feeling the growing power of our Jewish community lately? Happily, I am. We have seen a nice resurgence in attendance at many of Federation’s Country Club events— and there is a palpable feeling of community in the air. At our Major Gifts event, top donors came out strong with attendance over 300. A wonderful, elegant evening, we were graced with not only a first class speaker such as Dan Rather, but also with piercing stories from our recipients. In January, “America’s Rabbi” Shmuley Boteach kicked off our Federation’s new 3-part Community-wide Education Series. And in March, our Federation’s King David Society will welcome President Bill Clinton for an evening, sponsored by the Jewish Federations of North America for KDS members nationwide. I can go on, but you have a whole issue of Chai Life before you. Enjoy, speak out, join your neighbors and be part of our powerful community. Sincerely,

Anne Jacobson, FRD Chair

JOAN AND MYRON KAUFMAN GOLD COAST “We have been lifelong supporters of the Federation system and uJA, like myron’s father was before us and as our children are following us. We are spending more time down here at our Boca Raton home, so we felt it is our responsibility to support this community as well.”

LEE BRENNER THE POLO CLUB “most of my paternal family died in Auschwitz so I’m acutely aware that Federation is the large umbrella that helps keep the Jewish people dry in the rainstorm of existence. Giving to Federation is a personal pleasure as well as an obligation of the Jewish community to our posterity.”

LISA & BOB MARTON WOODFIELD COUNTRY CLUB “We have made the decision to donate to the JFSpBC out of our concern for the welfare of Jewish individuals and families in need of assistance not only in Israel and around the world, but right here in our very own community. At the same time, our involvement helps us maintain our family’s strong bond to our Jewish heritage.”

JONATHAN BLUM BOCA RATON “I had been involved with other charities and been to Israel several times, but didn’t know much about the Federation until I went on the pAC mission last spring. Getting to know the quality, good-hearted people involved and seeing all that Federation does in Israel was priceless. then, after visiting the campus and learning how much Federation does locally, I needed to be a part of it and contribute as well.”

Dorothy P. Seaman Department of Women’s Philanthropy Ways for Every Woman to Join in & Make a Difference Women’s Philanthropy heads into its “second semester” of the 2012 campaign year with great passion, power and purpose. Broadening our base, and with further education, we continue to increase the dollars raised by the philanthropic actions of our generous women. With greater understanding, they see how leaders lead and how, together, they make a profound difference in lives less fortunate than theirs. Our WP Officers’ careful event and program planning provides the backdrop, the setting in which concerned, like-minded Jewish women gather with a greater sense of community and the power to effect social change. The season’s calendar is designed to reach women of every age and lifestyle, but all have the same common denominator: caring. Each one of you can be part of WP’s efforts to continually raise the bar within our Federation, with the fervent hope to maximize the use of every dollar raised. Please join us in the power of the collective, as we make our community, our Jewish community and our world better. B’Shalom,

Nearly 100 Lions of Judah got an in-depth Middle East update from FAU’s Dr. Robert Rabil at the first-ever Lion Chat on November 28, 2011. Gathered at the beautiful St. Andrews Country Club home of Jane and Martin Greenberg, they enjoyed a “high tea” including crumpets as well as, of course, some spirited chatting. With Lions eager to continue this new opportunity to spend time together and learn, the second Chat was scheduled for February 8 at Barbara Feingold’s home in Addison Reserve, with Reuven Hazan of Hebrew University slated to provide an Israeli perspective on the Middle East. MARLEEN FORKAS, LOCAL PHILANTHROPIST.

Vibrant, active and as savvy as they come, Marleen

Forkas is a spirited force in local philanthropy, known not only as a major donor to our Federation, but also as a fervent supporter of an impressive range of local organizations and interests. CHAILIFE 24

J

ust recently, her generous donation named the marleen Forkas Camps at the Adolph and Rose Levis Jewish Community Center (Federation’s largest founding agency), helping to make the special Jewish camp experience available to children whose families could otherwise not afford it. prior to that, she endowed the marleen Forkas Chair of Contemporary Jewish Issues at the Jewish Federation of South palm Beach County, ensuring high profile speakers (in perpetuity) for the annual Lion of Judah Luncheon— an investment she hopes will attract even more woman donors at the $5,000 level and above. And, in 2005, she and her beloved late husband Harold funded and named Florida Atlantic university’s first-ever alumni center, making the university’s longtime dream a reality.

says marleen has been a pillar of our community since moving here over 20 years ago — especially when it comes to Jewish giving. “Her philosophy of recruiting donors by leading with her own magnanimous gifts has worked wonders. there is hardly a family in South palm Beach County that hasn’t been touched by marleen’s commitment to our people,” he says.

And yes indeed that was marleen, sans her famous trademark hatwear, letting her curly locks free and strutting her stuff in Boca’s Ballroom Battle last year to benefit the George Snow Scholarship Fund, combining two of her favorite passions: supporting education and dancing.

marleen is also equally motivated to support Jewish values in our community. As a LOJE (Lion of Judah Endowment: a woman who commits $100,000 or more in perpetuity to fund her Annual Campaign gift), she is determined to get younger women involved in the program. Currently, our Federation boasts the highest number of LOJEs in the country and ranks among the top three in its number of Lions as well (women who commit at least $5,000 every year to the Annual Campaign).

According to marleen, there is no reason why you can’t have fun AnD raise money for a cause you believe in. this also

What are we here for if not to help others?” asks marleen, eyes aglow. “tzedakah is probably the most important thing you can do with your life. explains why you will see her cheering on the FAu Owls from the stands; and why her home is adorned with souvenirs from dances, theater performances and sporting events, as well as memorabilia from charity functions of all kinds. She even has a gigantic pink costume bra on display (which she designed and created) from a recent walk for breast cancer research, as well as a rhinestone-studded hardhat from the FAu Alumni Center groundbreaking ceremony. “What are we here for if not to help others?” asks marleen, eyes aglow. “tzedakah is probably the most important thing you can do with your life.” Given her philanthropic record, marleen clearly not only walks the talk, she dances it too. marleen’s dear friend and advisor michael Weinberg, who is also a major donor to our Federation and a board member,

When marleen heard that the JCC needed a new donor to step up to support camps, she thought she would be a perfect fit. “I wanted to do something that would really help kids. I believe that an investment in a child’s future pays the best dividends— and that a great camp experience builds character, social skills, confidence and self esteem.”

marleen explains, “Because families are spread out more now – parents living here with their children living up north – their values aren’t as rooted. So we have to build upon the importance of tzedakah in our community. that’s why I want younger women involved with Federation’s Lion of Judah program.” And that is what compelled marleen to fund, in perpetuity, the cost of the keynote speaker for the women’s premier event of the year: the Lion of Judah Luncheon. “I wanted us to have the very best speakers who can talk about contemporary issues of interest to our women. my hope is that it will continue to promote high attendance– which is now at about 400 – and draw new women into the fold,” she says. “Also, I’m not sure most women in their 40s realize that they can become a LOJE through their insurance policy, and that it’s much less expensive than they realize. you can endow at every level... and from little acorns grow big trees,” she smiles. The Marleen Forkas Chair of Contemporary Jewish Issues ensures that our Federation will bring the highest caliber speakers to the annual Lion of Judah Luncheon: 2012 Campbell Brown, Award-winning Journalist/Broadcaster 2011 Nancy Lublin, Dress for Success Founder 2010 Gloria Allred, Attorney for Women’s Equality and Justice

POWER OF COMMUNITY 2 0 1 1 A n n u a l R epor t

29 CHAILIFE

Dear Federation Family: Our 2011 campaign year was clearly one of reaching out to the community in new ways and engaging neighbors of every generation. As you will see in the Year In Review that follows, we have laid the groundwork for wonderful new initiatives to take hold and bear fruit in coming years. We’ve also continued working as diligently as possible to maximize every resource available. We achieved our campaign goal of $14 million and also raised an additional $500,000 to fund specific priority needs in our community. None of this could have been accomplished without the efforts of leadership and volunteers from our general campaign, country clubs and women’s philanthropy. We are proud to report that two families— both of whom are dear friends and longtime contributors to our Federation— stepped forward with magnanimous gifts. Anne and Norman Jacobson’s generosity has named the Jewish Community Foundation, which reflects their deep belief in the importance of

strengthening our Jewish future for generations to come. And Jack and Marilyn Pechter named our Federation’s Local Safety Net Services Giving Center in Jack’s parents’ honor through a very benevolent gift from the Pechter Family Foundation. During the past year, we also entered the active development stage for the Sinai Residences of Boca Raton to become a reality on Federation’s campus. This impressive Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) will not only address a dire local need for senior housing, it will also create a new revenue source for our Federation. We are forever mindful that if not for the support of neighbors like you, our Federation could not come to the aid of thousands of Jewish people in need or brighten the way for future generations. On behalf of all of our recipients, Federation lay leadership and staff, thank you for your continued support and generosity.

Best Regards,

Ellen R. Sarnoff Chair, Jewish Federation

YEAR IN REVIEW 2011 The past year saw a wonderful array of new initiatives and had us reaching out to our community — and our sister city in Israel — like never before. From enriching and engaging events to exciting new ways to give and get involved, Federation expanded its approach to reaching new and prospective donors alike. The results? Nothing short of impressive. Here are just some of the year’s highlights:

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN:

The 2012

More than 300 volunteers turned out for a super successful Super Sunday. We “Powered Up, Plugged In and Participated” to raise more than $632,000 from over 1,000 donors. We also introduced a teen initiative that brought in $65,000 through Facebook, Twitter and text messaging.

brought a significant increase in attendance over the previous year, as well as continued growth of the Ketubah Society led by our largest lifetime contributors Phyllis and Harvey Sandler. We welcomed four new Ketubah members: Bill Newman, Dollsey & Seymour Rappaport, Ellen R. Sarnoff (Federation Chair) and Ruth Weinberger.

Major Gifts Event featuring Dan Rather

Through our Federation’s new Adopt-a-Project initiative, our community took on eight new projects to benefit important local programs that would have otherwise gone unfunded. From serving a Passover seder for local seniors to enabling young adults to discover the wonder of Israel, our community groups came together to make great things happen.

Our Women’s Department remains among the most successful in the country, with the highest number of LOJEs (Lion of Judah Endowments) and among the top three in its number of Lions.

This past summer, 12 of our Federation’s NextGen participants joined a life-changing mission to Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, where they met recipients of a wide-range of programs.

We introduced the Pomegranate Program— a new level of giving for women, with a minimum annual donation of $1,800 per year, its own beautifully crafted pin and special events.

“Decks, Dots & Desserts,” the 2012 season opener for our Department of Women’s Philanthropy that featured a fun evening of Canasta and Mah Jongg, was the first of several events reaching out farther to women of all ages throughout the community.

METRO DIVISION: Our vibrant Metro Division geared for those under 45, continues to expand and hold fun, engaging events where newcomers through community leaders meet to socialize and network. Our 2011 Ben Gurion Society Event with Jewish Comedian Gary Gulman drew an impressive group of new and longtime participants.

ANNE AND NORMAN JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION: Our Foundation launched its community-wide Create a Jewish Legacy program, partnering with local synagogues, day schools and Jewish agencies to ensure a brighter future through planned giving and endowments. Eighteen members of our Jewish Community Foundation’s Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) shared a remarkable experience on their Israel mission, with site visits to Kiryat Bialik and more to see an array of programs and people we help support. The cutting edge hands-on philanthropists of our Jewish Women’s Foundation allocated $135,000 to nine programs that change the lives of Jewish women and girls in our community, and overseas in Israel and Russia.

JEWISH COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL (JCRC): Our Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) advocates on behalf of the Jewish community. From securing unanimous passage of a new Florida law making it more difficult for state banks to invest in Iran, to advocating in opposition to cuts in Medicaid funding, the JCRC helped make good things happen. In May, the JCRC brought together 4,000 residents for a rousing Israel Under the Stars at Sunset Cove Amphitheater to celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel Independence Day. This year’s celebration will take place on April 26, 2012.

ISRAEL AND OVERSEAS:

CHAILIFE 32

Federation’s P2K program completed plans to bring together teens from Kiryat Bialik (our sister city in Israel) and local teens to work jointly on musical pieces. P2K also continues its Women-toWomen Initiative and family and educator exchanges.

During the summer of 2011, more than 60 teens and 10 adults of the JCC’s Boca Raton Maccabi team traveled to Israel for sports, activities and learning, along with a visit to Kiryat Bialik. Three young Israeli swimmers joined the Boca team for two weeks.

DEPARTMENT OF JEWISH EDUCATION: Our Federation’s community outreach efforts for the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School drew a resurgence of students into its two-year program which features a curriculum developed by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Our community’s March of the Living delegation of 48 local teens also observed Yom HaAtzmaut in Israel and visited sister city Kiryat Bialik, where meaningful friendships were forged– and now continue over the internet. More than 8,000 students participated in the March last year.

FEDERATION’S DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL NEEDS: Federation’s Department of Special Needs responded to hundreds of requests – from preschool inclusion to housing for seniors with disabilities. The department launched its community web page, accessible (at no charge) to schools, synagogues, agencies, educators and parents interested in enhancing the lives of those with special needs. Each year, more than 500 individuals with special needs are served.

SPECIAL PROJECTS: Our vision for the future of our campus remains on track – the centerpiece of which is the Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, an upscale Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) with 232 units, 48 assisted living apartments, 60 skilled nursing suites, and 24 units for memory support. Sinai Residences will serve a dire need for local seniors and bring in revenue which will help offset campus costs. Construction is scheduled to begin prior to the 2013 calendar year.

FINANCE AND OPERATIONS: At no financial risk, our Federation has completed refinancing of the HUD Gould House, which will allow for many significant building upgrades amounting to an estimated $1.5 million for senior life. Our Federation received a

$467,000 competitive Florida

Clean Energy Grant to upgrade our campus chillers and provide new, energy-efficient lighting and solar panels.

A

t 19, Ari was no longer eligible for school-based services that helped him learn to manage his autism. His parents knew he

would thrive in a residential setting. they also wanted Ari to do meaningful work each day and have a chance to socialize with his peers. When an adult child has special needs, his parents not only have to plan for their own lifetime, but also for his entire future. that can be daunting, especially when you don’t have the financial resources to do so. Fortunately, friends told Ari’s parents about the Jewish Association for Residential Care (JARC). During the family’s initial visit, they were nearly in tears. the staff at JARC realized Ari’s unique abilities. Ari now participates in his group home and works as a member of a vocational team. His parents know that without the care and support of local residents, their son’s chance for an independent life with dignity – and happiness – might not have been realized. JARC receives funding and support from our Federation.

hey say home is where the heart is. I have never felt that to be so true until now,” says Romi, 21, a Boca Raton resident.

“I went on Birthright Israel in may and, within four months, I was back in Israel. It was the experience of a lifetime! the trip led me to make huge life changes. I am now volunteering at a school in Israel, teaching English. I also work at a center for children with motor disabilities, and once a month I volunteer in a soup kitchen. Israel changed my life.” Romi says she is deeply grateful to all those who make Birthright possible. “It is such an important opportunity that changes lives and creates a strong and enduring bond to our Homeland.” Taglit-Birthright Israel provides the gift of first-time educational trips to Israel for Jewish young adults ages 18 to 26, and is supported through Federation funding.

ix years ago, yael had two toddlers, had no income and had just gotten divorced. She could not hold down a job. then someone recommended a program called STRIVE, which provides young people with training and life counselors. yael started the program

lacking all basic work skills. the STRIVE staff paired yael with a mentor who taught her these skills. She also worked on taking full responsibility for herself and her actions. When yael graduated, she was hired by a cellular firm. today, she is the manager. “If I hadn’t gone through STRIVE,” she reflects, “I would have never achieved so much. I know how to approach a boss, how to excel at my work, and how to think for the future.” STRIVE is a program of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which is supported through Federation funding.

Metro LEADS Class Readies Young Adults to Step Up The dress was casual, the atmosphere inviting and informal. But the focus could not have been more serious among the young adults at the first Leadership Education And Development Series (LEADS) program: critical local safety net needs and services, and preparing to take responsibility in the Jewish community. Thirteen South Palm Beach County women and men in their late 20s to early 40s are stepping up to leadership through the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Metro Division’s inaugural LEADS class. On January 15, the Levine Board Room buzzed with their ideas and energy. Their seasoned peers Bryan Drowos, Metro Co-chair and Federation Board member; Rabbi Joshua Broide, Founder and

Director of the Boca Raton Jewish Experience and Outreach Rabbi at Boca Raton Synagogue; and Larry Blair, Chair of Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service and Federation Executive Board member shared their experiences as they guided discussions and interactive activities about leadership. Blair was joined by a JFS recipient and Beth Levine, JFS Director of Administration, in orienting and inspiring the group regarding the agency’s vital programs and services. Beginning February 15, the LEADS sessions will be facilitated by Angela Lutin, a motivational coach, Wexner graduate, and author of Play Big. Metro Division is generously sponsored by The Sandelman Foundation. The Drowos Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and Marcy Robbins, MWR Consulting are the LEADS program sponsors.

Metro Packs the Funky Buddha Lounge with “Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad” With standing room only at Funky Buddha Lounge on January 19 in East Boca, Metro Division’s night of comedy and music with “Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad” proved it once again: for young Jewish adults, Metro events are the place to be and be seen. Anne & Norman Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation

Planned Giving Opportunities A planned gift involves making a charitable donation that can financially benefit both you and the values you care about. When you make a planned gift, the resulting fund is designed to meet your charitable goals: Endowment Funds: Unrestricted Endowment Funds are the community’s “savings account” that may be used in times of emergency or other general needs. Designated Endowment Funds are “special purpose” funds that name a field of interest to which the income and/or principal of the fund is dedicated. Donor-Advised Philanthropic Funds: As your “charitable checking account,” the fund generally bears your name (or another individual selected by you) and affords you the opportunity to offer recommendations for distribution of the fund’s assets to charitable organizations of your choice. Supporting Foundation: Suitable where substantial sums are involved, a Supporting Foundation is a separate, non-profit entity managed by its own board of directors, including both family and Jewish Community Foundation appointees. Bequests/Trusts: Naming the Federation as a beneficiary for a specific amount or percentage of one’s estate, in either a will or trust, will create and perpetuate your Jewish legacy. Life Insurance: By purchasing or transferring ownership of a policy to the Federation and naming Federation as the beneficiary, you can achieve both income and estate tax savings. IRA/Retirement Plan Assets: By naming the Federation as a beneficiary of your plan, the gift avoids both income and estate taxes and generates an estate tax charitable deduction. Charitable Gift Income Plans: These plans can be customtailored to fit almost any situation where there is a need for current income, coupled with long-term philanthropic objectives. This can be achieved through several vehicles such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. Charitable Lead Trust: A Charitable Lead Trust allows you to transfer property to your children or grandchildren while making a significant contribution to the Jewish community. We have great news to report from our Foundation over the past few months. First and foremost— its new name: The Anne and Norman Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation. That is right! We are so fortunate to have these dear friends of our Federation step up to the plate with a magnanimous gift that so strongly supports our community into the future and reflects their deep belief in Jewish philanthropy. Not only was this a most generous contribution, it was a smart one, too. The Jacobsons took advantage of the Charitable Lead Trust option which, given historically low interest rates, comes with tremendous benefits. In December, our Foundation was proud to help facilitate the official communitywide kick-off of our Create a Jewish Legacy initiative (read more below). And we’re happy to report that our Foundation investments with the Chicago Jewish Community Foundation’s “pooled” portfolio of over $650 million have weathered the economic climate quite well. We’d like to acknowledge Rich Steinberg, our Investment Committee Chair, who has been leading our team in this area. Wishing you a healthy and prosperous 2012, David Pratt Elyssa Kupferberg Chair Co-chair

JCF Engages Community to Prepare for the Future Through Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL), the Anne & Norman Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) of South Palm Beach County is actively developing partnerships with local synagogues, schools and service agencies to ensure a strong, vibrant community through planned charitable giving. Thirty engaged leaders from throughout our Jewish community kicked off our JCF’s Create a Jewish Legacy initiative on December 6, 2011 at the offices of Proskauer. They learned how, by working together, we have the power and ability to make a major impact in securing our thriving Jewish community for future generations to come – with a wealth of customized resources including consulting and coaching, administrative support, marketing and training through our JCF. CJL Co-chairs David Katzman, CPA, and Anne & Norman Jacobson were joined by special guest Liora Herman from the Atlanta CJL Program in the presentation; Mark Schaum, Esq., CPA, rounds out the local CJL team as Vice Chair. The community momentum has moved into the first of a series of CJL Training Institute Sessions on January 31, where organizations were able to sign on to CJL as official partners. Bryan Clontz, President and Co-Founder of Charitable Solutions, LLC, facilitated “The Changing Philanthropic Conversation.” For more information, contact 561.852.3173 or micheleb@bocafed.org.

Just as they plan for their own families’ future, a number of caring, committed men have stepped up to ensure the long-term wellbeing and security of our Jewish community. By seeing that their annual gifts to Federation continue through our Jewish Community Foundation, they are ensuring the longevity and continuity of our community for generations to come. Endowing a Federation Annual Campaign gift with a permanent PACE fund (Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment) can be accomplished easily through many planned giving vehicles that financially benefit the donor, while furthering the values he cares about. When a man permanently endows his annual campaign gift to our Jewish Federation with a current or deferred gift of at least $100,000, he becomes a member of the prestigious Men’s PACE Honor Society. Speak to your trusted financial and/or legal advisor or have a confidential conversation with one of the Foundation’s professional staff to help you design your lasting Jewish Legacy. Contact Ida Novack at 561-852-3342 or idan@bocafed.org. Hear why from a few of the men who know from experience: Having been actively committed to our Jewish Federation since helping found the Gold Coast Division, I was well aware of just how much our annual contributions are needed and how much they accomplish. With PACE, I knew that one planned gift would allow me to continue to make a difference where it was most needed among our Jewish family. -Ed Burns

Years ago, in my 60’s, I realized I was one of many Federation donors advancing in age, who would not be here in years to come, and that many of our gifts would not continue unless we made some provision. The logical answer was to endow my annual gift with a PACE commitment, which I easily accomplished through an insurance policy purchased in the name of the Federation, and with a bequest in my will. -Jim Nobil, Past President of JFSPBC Our Foundation is the future of our Jewish community. It is incumbent for all of us in the community to help plan for this future, and we must lead by example. With the example of my own gift, I am more comfortable in suggesting that my clients plan philanthropically and asking others to do the same. -Tom Kaplan, Immediate Past Chair, Jewish Community Foundation As an annual donor to Federation I wanted to ensure my gift would live on long after I am gone. It is my responsibility as a Jew to make sure that my commitment to my community and our people is insured. -Jonathan Sahn

Planning & Allocations and Israel & Overseas It’s in the Planning: Behind the Scenes, Two Committees Ensure Federation Allocations Are a Wise Investment Our Planning & Allocations (P & A) and Israel & Overseas (IOC) Committees work painstakingly throughout the year to assess needs in our community and the world, to evaluate programs and services designed to meet these needs and, when necessary, to prioritize the allocation of dollars at home and abroad. These committees hold the Jewish community’s pivotal role in addressing vital needs in our own neighborhoods and among our global Jewish family.

planning & allocations (P & A)

ISRAEL & OVERSEAS (IOC)

Our area is home to one of the largest populations of elderly Jewish seniors including many Holocaust survivors. The extent of this and other local Jewish community needs often surprises residents. But the 35 members of Steve Mendelsohn, Michael Rose, P & A Chair P & A Co-chair our Federation’s P & A Committee are very familiar with them. Each year, this vital committee and its professional staff enable the Federation to meet its obligation to plan for and address community needs to the best of its ability.

The 19 members of our IOC Committee are making sure our Federation dollars are truly doing a world of good - meeting with overseas partners, studying needs and program impact, and Betty Kane, Carlos Romero, IOC Chair Vice Chair weighing options for the best possible recommendations to address next year’s global concerns with the resources available.

Three P & A Task Forces recommend funding in different areas of concern: Safety Net Services, chaired by Jeff Newman; Jewish Education, chaired by Michael Beckerman; and Jewish Life and Learning, chaired by Rabbi Dan Levin. A fourth Task Force, Community Outreach is chaired by Debra Halperin. “We are privileged to have leaders in our community who step up to tackle the difficult task of establishing priorities among many worthy programs and services.” -Steve Mendelsohn, P & A Chair

Recognizing the importance of its planning functions for the benefit of the community, the Federation also engages experts in their fields, such as nationally recognized Dr. Michelle LaRocque, Director of Community Special Needs Services. These experts compile information and collaborate with local beneficiary agencies, participating as consultants in the course of the Planning & Allocations process. Through community coordination, the Committee’s recommendations for allocations enable the Federation to leverage resources available for maximal impact. For more information, contact Stuart Silver, Vice President of Planning and Allocations, at 561-852-6090 or stuarts@bocafed.org.

Half of our Federations’ IOC funding is allocated as powerful “Core,” providing JAFI and JDC with the support essential to their critical primary activities. In 2011, Federations could choose to allocate 10% of their Core to one funding area, and our IOC selected JDC’s Fighting Jewish Poverty. With many choices for our remaining elective IOC funding, our Federation is currently supporting JAFI programs: Partnership 2000 (P2K) in our Sister City, Kiryat Bialik; Summer Camps in the FSU; MASA Israel Journey; Ben Yakir Youth Aliyah Village; and Nativ Immigrant Soldier Identity; JDC programs: PACT (Parents and Children Together), FSU welfare relief, and Chamah elderly assistance; as well as the Ethiopian National Project (ENP). “Our dedicated volunteers strive to make the most deliberate, responsible decisions possible to further the life-saving work we do in collaboration with our overseas partner agencies.” -Betty Kane, IOC Chair

The Mollie Rosenthal Memorial Fund of our Jewish Community Foundation also supported two Israel projects last year: JDC senior employment training in our Partnership 2000 (P2K) Sister City, Kiryat Bialik; and bomb shelters at JAFI senior housing. ETHIOPIA The Jews remaining in Ethiopia are gradually being brought to Israel. Through Jewish day schools, youth activities and instructional sessions for adults, JAFI is preparing them for aliyah and an optimal absorption process in Israel. Once in Israel, they are welcomed and supported by many programs of JDC, JAFI and ENP.

Making a Difference

AROUND THE WORLD POLAND As many as 25,000 Jews reside in Poland amid high unemployment, inadequate infrastructure and extreme disparities. Working with Polish Jewish organizations, the JDC is providing critical basic sustenance and care to elderly Holocaust survivors and vulnerable families, as well as youth clubs, camps, student organizations, and leadership training.

the dollars we raise in South palm Beach County reach far and wide, helping Jews in more than 70 countries through our overseas agency beneficiaries American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) and the Ethiopian national project (Enp). Here are a just a few glimpses to pique your interest. Learn more at www.jewishboca.org/ioc.

THE FORMER SOVIET UNION For nearly 20 years, the cornerstone of JAFI’s youth activities in the FSU has been its network of summer camps. These intensive summer experiences provide children and teens with a compelling and fun introduction to their Jewish heritage, and serve as a cultural lifeline for their families. Many participants then enroll in year-round Jewish programming and long-term programs in Israel.

ISRAEL One in three children in Israel lives below the poverty line. Nearly 350,000 children (one in six) are at risk of neglect or suffering abuse, often at home. Many are likely to drop out of school, become alienated or delinquent. JAFI’s Ben Yakir Youth Village offers the critical nurturing and services that change the lives of hundreds of youngsters.

INDIA With a huge population and significant poverty, India’s government social services cannot possibly meet all the needs of its poor and elderly Jewish population. The JDC provides a home for the aged, as well as financial help, health care and Jewish cultural and educational programs for all ages to the small Jewish community with roots that go back to ancient times. 51 CHAILIFE

Jewish Education Whether it’s called a commission, an initiative or a department, the mission remains the same, to be able to provide fresh opportunities for Jews to come together to engage with their history and heritage; to collaborate and ‘conspire’ with community partners, synagogues, day schools or agencies in the goal of promoting Jewish renaissance; to offer innovative programs and inspiring presenters to seed or deepen one’s sense of Jewish journey and connectedness to each other. These are the purposes of Jewish education and enrichment in our South Palm Beach Jewish community. They are rooted in the sense that though we grow as individual Jews and as discrete families, we blossom as a people connected, and as a community conjoined. With warmest wishes we say to you, ‘Let My People...KNOW and GROW.’

In its ongoing attempt to offer innovative technology programs, DKJA is pleased to announce the implementation of a new iPad Pilot Program that will eventually encompass the entire school. At the 2011 summer administrative retreat, the DKJA leadership team attended an iPad training session presented by Apple representatives. Participants learned how the innovative tablets benefit students of the mobile native generation. “Mobile natives are students who grew up with mobile technology at their fingertips. They have a natural aptitude for assimilating to a mobile curriculum easily and effectively, using it to their advantage,” said Technology instructor Michael Luetjen. “These students will benefit greatly from our iPad Pilot Program.” Thanks to a generous anonymous donation restricted to the Media Center/Library, a dedicated bank of iPads will be utilized to implement a new Media Center Lower School initiative. Although mobile technology is still relatively new in education, research has already shown the versatility and advantages that tablet computing offers, from student engagement to differentiation and collaboration, to name two. Founding Agencies JEWISH ASSOCIATION FOR RESIDENTIAL CARE (JARC) 561.552.2550 • www.jarcfl.org JARC receives an “A”! The Jewish Association for Residential Care, a non-sectarian organization, provides group homes, apartments and vocational training for adults with developmental disabilities. JARC strives to assist each individual in becoming all he or she is capable of being and we encourage this growth in a caring, nurturing environment. JARC’s mission, in partnership with clients’ families, is to promote independence, dignity and self-respect in order to create more fulfilling lives. JARC’s programs were recently monitored by the Delmarva Foundation, an agency contracted by the State of Florida to review programs serving persons with developmental disabilities. JARC is proud to announce that all of their programs, Adult Day Training, Group Homes, and Supported Employment, received an “A” rating. Every year, these programs are required to meet increasingly stringent standards, while the funding continues to be cut. This year alone, hundreds of students with developmental and intellectual disabilities graduated from local high schools. In the past, they would transition into community employment or an adult day training program, such as the JARC Mel & Edith Clayman Training and Resource Center. Sadly, due to budget cuts, there was no funding available for these graduates to receive services. They are left to sit home, often losing the skills they had gained in school. Those who were fortunate to be employed in the community no longer have the support services they need to ensure continued success. JARC strives to assist these families through grants and scholarships to provide life-sustaining services they so desperately need. RUTH RALES JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE 561.852.3333 • www.ruthralesjfs.org JFS Grows with Community Needs Ruth Rales JFS has been committed to enhancing and improving the quality of life for all members of the community since 1979, offering help, hope and humanity through a comprehensive range of programs and services including food and financial assistance, senior services and youth mentoring, counseling and mental health care. The agency continues to grow and change in response to community needs, with many recent developments, thanks to a dedicated, caring staff, volunteers, board and supporters. At a lively November first birthday party, the Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center celebrated having quickly become a vibrant hub of vital activities for hundreds of seniors and volunteers each week. As residents face continued economic challenges, JFS stepped up community food drives and stretched dollars further through partnerships with BJ’s Wholesale Club and a significant grant from the Walmart Foundation. Affordable psychiatric and psychological care have extended the range of counseling and mental health services. The generosity of the Viner Family Foundation and Hands on Tzedakah added a case manager for families and children in crisis. The new Caring Doctor’s Program, in partnership with the Palm Beach County Medical Society, provides short-term, affordable pro bono health care to uninsured adults ages 19-64, from area doctors who receive sovereign immunity. Holocaust survivor assistance grew by more than 100% to a caseload of nearly 250, through the Claims Conference, and a supplemental campaign that raised nearly $100K. A demonstration grant from Retirement Research Foundation, significantly expanded the kibbitz & ride volunteer driver program, now serving over 100 seniors.
