n April of 2005, a fresh voice announced his arrival on the international stage with a stunningly inventive document titled Live at Stubb’s. Six years later, Matisyahu returns to theSPREAD renowned 1Austin venue that MATISYAHU helped to launch his career with Live at Stubb’s, Vol. II, a new CD-DVD package that demonstrates the continued originality and increasing depth of this longtime New Yorker’s craft. Inspired by the runaway success of the original record, which spawned the hit single “King Without a Crown” and has to date sold nearly 700,000 copies in the United States, Matisyahu says he always knew he wanted to make another live album. “Performing is such a big part of what I do,” he says, “and there’s a lot about that live energy that you just can’t catch in the studio. So for me it was simply a matter of figuring out the right time to do it.” He chose well: Last year Matisyahu released Light, a David Kahne-produced studio disc on which he jumped boldly from hard-edged dancehall and ska-inflected New Wave to laidback pop-rock and acoustic folk-soul. The album took Matisyahu well beyond his stylistic comfort zone and charted the growth of his vocals from traditional reggae toasting to a more dynamic, emo7

tional place. But it didn’t necessarily show off his onstage evolution. “I’ve played so many shows and gone through so many metamorphoses as a performer,” he says. Especially valuable was the opportunity to showcase that evolution at the very club where his career really took off. “It was kind of a return-to-roots occasion,” he says—albeit one where we see how far he’s come, as well. Part of that transformation has been fueled by Matisyahu’s new band: Brooklyn’s acclaimed Dub Trio, which includes guitarist D.P. Holmes, bassist Stu Brooks and drummer Joe Tomino. The singer first came across the group—as fate would have it—while in Austin recording the first Stubb’s record. “I remember seeing their name at a record signing and being intrigued,” he says. “So I got one of their records while I was on tour, and there was this one song I couldn’t stop playing.” Shortly thereafter, Matisyahu spent an entire day walking around Boston writing lyrics to the tune. “I love the way they bounce back and forth between really beautiful music and heavier, harder-edged stuff,” he says. “I knew right then that I wanted to work with them.” Last year he booked a show with Dub Trio at a small club in Brooklyn. “We just did an improv set after maybe one rehearsal,” he recalls. “It felt so right.”

8

That improvisational spirit looms large throughout Live at Stubb’s, Vol. II, which pulls primarily from Light and Youth, Matisyahu’s 2006 full-length. “Dub Trio understand the concept of space,” he says, “which for a vocalist is great, because that leaves a lot of room for me to really get into my lyrics in new ways.” Here Matisyahu uses that room to dig deeper into his sound than ever before, shedding new light on its hip-hop, rock and reggae dimensions to the vocal delight of the enthusiastic (and demographically varied) Stubb’s crowd. That audience was central to what Matisyahu set out to accomplish with Live at Stubb’s, Vol. II. After all, the fans were the ones who enabled his return to the venue in the first place, affording Matisyahu the opportunity to extend the legacy Stubb’s represents. In fact, one crowd member made a lasting contribution. “The night before the show I took a picture of my tour bus in the hotel parking lot and posted it on Twitter,” Matisyahu remembers. “Someone sent back a tweet saying they’d figured out which hotel it was and asked if they could come say hi. I said sure and a couple of kids showed up; we hung out for a few minutes on the bus. Then the next night at the show I’m pulling people up onstage during ‘King Without a Crown’ and one of them is the kid from Twitter!” The singer laughs. “So the last clip on the DVD is actually me giving him a high-five.” The appreciation, no doubt, was mutual.

D

udu Fisher is known throughout the world for his stirring performance as Jean Valjean in the hit show “Les Miserables,” but his career began in his native country of Israel many years before. After three years of service in the Israel Defense Forces, Fisher studied at the Tel Aviv Academy of Music and studied privately with some of the great cantors of the previous generation. He was only 22 years old when he was invited to become the cantor of the Great Synagogue of Tel Aviv. Along with his synagogue duties, Fisher also traveled throughout the world, bringing traditional Hassidic, Yiddish and cantorial music to new audiences. During a trip to London in 1986, he happened to see a performance of the musical Les Miserables. It was an event that changed his life. When word was released of the show’s forthcoming production in Hebrew, Fisher knew that he had to audition for the show. The rest is history. Fisher became a superstar who has performed his role as Valjean on Broadway, on London’s West End as well as in a command performance hosted by the Queen of England.

11

Although Dudu Fisher is not the first Israeli actor to achieve success in the theater and musical world, Fisher did achieve a first of a different kind. As an observant Jew, he was the first actor on Broadway and the West End to be excused from performing on Friday nights, Saturday matinees and all Jewish holidays. Fisher’s career, which has included thirty-eight recorded albums, has been rich and extensive. He sang the role of Moses in the Hebrew version of Stephen Spielberg’s The Prince of Egypt, performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded an album of show tunes with the London Symphony Orchestra and has performed for the Thai Royal Family and for President and Senator Clinton. As the first Israeli artist allowed to sing in the Soviet Union in the days before perestroika, he performed to thousands of Jews thirsting for Jewish culture. In the theater, Fisher has played leading roles in the productions of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Kol Nidre by Lalo Shifrin and Avi Koren, Over The Rainbow and Stairways to Heaven. In 1999, Fisher’s first one-man show, Never on Friday, opened at off Broadway’s Jewish Repertory Theater. Lawrence Van Gelder of the New York Times called the show, “A display of a vocal talent that resists confinement and is an explosion of religious faith that is reflected in the show’s title. Mr. Fisher possesses the spectrum of talent to make it work.” In 2002, Dudu again thrilled his audiences with a one-man show, Something Old, Something New, which was written by Richard Jay-Alexander, 12

Dudu’s Broadway “Les Miz” director. He opened to rave reviews. Victor Gluck of Back Stage wrote of Fisher, “The energy that Fisher radiates on stage can light a small city.” Fisher’s accomplishments also include his starring role in the film The Road to Glory, acting as host on an Israeli television series and appearing on innumerable radio and television programs throughout the world. It is safe to say that Dudu Fisher has excelled in every aspect of his profession. Most recently, Fisher brought back Yiddish and Klezmer music with an ongoing production for the Yiddishspiel Theater in Israel and audiences are thrilled by his latest show, Jerusalem. The tour of this show began in Jerusalem and he continues to travel through the states and Europe with the production. Fisher also recently completed filming an Emmy-nominated PBS special In Concert From Israel in the valley of Beit She’an, which premiered in Florida and can now be seen in more than 35 cities throughout the United States. And finally, a dream-come-true solo performance took place in Carnegie Hall on October 25, 2009 to an enthusiastic audience as part of an East Coast 2009 tour which will be followed by another tour in the winter of 2010. From the Opera House in Sydney Australia to Madison Square Garden in New York, from the Budapest Opera House to the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, from Singapore to Sao Paulo, Dudu Fisher spends most of the year traveling around the globe bringing joy to millions of people. He is happily married and the proud father of three children. 13

Keen to thousands of songs of that era, Jason adds his own finesse to classics as he mimics the singer/ songwriters who composed them. Howard Kaye enjoys listening to people’s stories, asking questions and offering sound advice. It’s an ideal set of skills for helping clients in his life insurance business, hosting seminars on creating wealth and interviewing guests on his new WXEL-TV show, Around Town with Howard Kaye. “I really like to make a difference in people’s lives,” says Kaye, the 45-year-old president of the Howard Kaye Insurance Agency, Inc. in Boca Raton. For Kaye, that means educating prospective clients about the ways life insurance can be used in estate planning to reduce taxes, build wealth, create an income stream or leave a legacy for a charitable cause. It also means giving back to the community - both locally and globally. Kaye and wife Pamela are active volunteers and philanthropists. He serves on the executive board of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and the boards of the Adolph and Rose Levis JCC and Congregation B’nai Israel. Last year, he helped to organize a reunion in Miami for 35 of the 70 surviving passengers of the SS St. Louis, the American passenger liner that left Hamburg, Germany in 1939 carrying Jewish refugees. After both Cuba and the United States turned the liner away, the vessel had to return to Europe. “This was the 70th anniversary of the voyage, which was a watershed moment in world history,” says Kaye, who recently founded the National Foundation for Jewish Continuity, which focuses on educating younger generations about the past. The foundation’s online St. Louis Project presents passenger stories, photos and video histories (also posted on YouTube). Today, Kaye looks forward to interviewing guests from throughout Palm Beach County in South Florida on his 30-minute evening talk show, which airs Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and again on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. on WXEL TV. While Kaye’s involvements are so broad, he can take all these different aspects of his life and use them in his everyday insurance business helping people by utilizing his concepts such as The 401-KAYE Plan, Maximize Your IRA, Give Your Estate Away Twice and Create Your Own Inheritance. 25 As published in Boca Observer
