2015 ANNUAL CAMPAIGN The Jewish Federation system is at the heart of Jewish philanthropy; it represents the best of “all Jews are responsible for one another,” and is a showcase to the entire world of what true charity can do to repair the world. Dedicated individuals, both lay and professional, work tirelessly on the Annual Campaign to raise the critical funding needed so that the Federation can pursue the good works that it does – in their local communities, nationwide, in Israel, and around the world. “TZEDAKAH IS NOT ABOUT GIVING; TZEDAKAH IS ABOUT BEING.” ~RABBI BRADLEY SHAVIT ARTSON
The Charleston Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign embodies the values and traditions of our Jewish community more than anything else we do. It says we will address a broad array of critical issues to see that no Jew in need is ever turned away. It is the focal point of giving which provides the unrestricted funding needed to answer the diverse Jewish needs in Charleston, Israel, and overseas.

The list goes on and on. None of these programs can be maintained by any individual. Rather, these activities are borne from the joint thinking, and the combined funding, of our entire community. When our resources are pooled together, we can accomplish more than any of us can do on our own. The following Annual Report will show you what your dollars can do. LOWCOUNTRY GIVING DAY 2015: ONE DAY. ONE HUGE IMPACT. This year, Charleston Jewish Family Services participated in Lowcountry Giving Day, an online giving event sponsored by Coastal Community Foundation. Thanks to support from The Pearlstine Family Fund (Edwin, Susan, Jan and Larry) and The Cohen Family Fund (David, Manuel, Elinor, Kim and Harris), individual donations made during the 24hour online fundraiser were matched, allowing CJFS to make a greater impact for the most vulnerable members of our community. Thanks to strong community support, CJFS was the first organization to reach 50 unique donors, securing an additional incentive prize of $2,500.00 from Palmetto Brewery, bringing our total to $127,825.00. We are grateful for the generosity and support of the nearly 200 supporters who contributed to CJFS on Lowcountry Giving Day and for our matching funders.

THE JEWISH ENDOWMENT FUND (JEF): OUR CHARLESTON JEWISH COMMUNITY ENDOWMENT The Jewish Endowment Fund’s mission it to encourage donors to endow their support of Jewish causes and the Jewish community. Since its founding in 1996, the JEF has awarded more than $2 million in grants. Legacy gifts through endowments help ensure that our Jewish community will continue to thrive for generations to come. The Jewish Endowment Fund (JEF) is a collaboration between the Charleston Jewish Federation and the Coastal Community Foundation. The 2015 Total Endowment is $10,745,815.00. Each of us has the power to create our Jewish legacy through after-life giving. When you endow a set amount or percentage of your estate to the causes that speak to you most, your dollars will not just make an impact once, but every year in perpetuity. “WHAT CANNOT BE ACHIEVED IN A

2015 ALLOCATIONS SNAPSHOT: YOUR IMPACT The Allocations Committee of the Charleston Jewish Federation is responsible for grant review, determination, and award procedure each year. The committee has streamlined the process in order to maximize the effectiveness of our grant dollars to local and overseas organizations. Organizations requesting program funding are required to demonstrate a financial NEED and the beneficial COMMUNITY IMPACT of the programming. NEED: To be considered for a need-based grant, an organization must demonstrate a funding gap between what it costs to run the program and expected revenue to run the program. IMPACT: CJF looks for opportunities for collaboration among organizations along with programs that have a significant impact in our local and international Jewish communities.

CJF takes into account the different priorities in each area of Jewish life, evaluates the proposals from each organization that applies for funding, and works with each organization to promote our partnership and shared goals.
In order to ensure that we are not duplicating our efforts, and to understand the impact that Annual Campaign funding has in the community, we require each organization to submit a follow up report to show how dollars were used. This is the best way we can ensure to our donors that we value every contribution to the Annual Campaign and that your generosity is making an impact on the most people in our community. Through this process, we are able to effectively utilize the funds raised this past year to financially assist both existing and new organizations to foster exciting and impactful programs which enhance Jewish life in Charleston, Israel, and around the world.

Funding for the Charleston Jewish Federation is an investment for our entire Jewish community. CJF promotes Jewish life and Jewish education, provide funding to our Israel and overseas partners, support vulnerable populations, and invest in our future by encouraging youth engagement and leadership development for our Jewish community. The Charleston Jewish Federation raised $1,037,861.12 in 2015 through individual contributions, grant funding, and endowment revenue. A portion of this funding is not collected until 2016 and is not spent until 2016. The distribution of funds for the Charleston Jewish Federation in 2015 was $926,969.81. This distribution includes funds spent to support CJF initiatives, as well as administrative and financial resource development costs throughout 2015. This distribution also included allocations to local and international partners from the 2014 Annual Campaign, which were distributed in 2015. 8

THOUSANDS OF LIVES. ONE COMMUNITY. We are proud to support the following community partner organizations through an allocation from the Annual Campaign.*
2015 PARTICIPATING COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS Addlestone Hebrew Academy. Funding from the Annual Campaign helped provide tuition assistance to 99 students representing 61 families at Addlestone Hebrew Academy. BBYO. Funding provided safe and reliable transportation for BBYO members to Jewish youth group conventions and workshops. Coming Street Cemetery. Funding helped offset the costs of maintenance and restoration of historic Coming Street Cemetery in downtown Charleston. Charleston Jewish Family Services. Resources from the Annual Campaign supported the cost of providing 145 counseling sessions and direct financial assistance to 41 families in need. Hadassah. The Charleston chapter of Hadassah used Annual Campaign funds to provide partial scholarships to local children for Camp Judaea in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Jewish Community Center. Funding from the Annual Campaign supported JCC programs focusing on Jewish life, youth, cultural arts and community outreach, and seniors.
2015 PARTICIPATING COMMUNITY CONGREGATIONS Congregation Dor Tikvah. Funding was used to increase the involvement of children and their families in youth programming at Dor Tikvah, with a focus on programming for children ages 2-8. Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. Support helped fund KKBE's High Holiday services at Memminger Auditorium, permitting 1,200 congregants to pray together in one space. Synagogue Emanu-El. Annual Campaign funding allowed Emanu-El to offer a Purim event at no cost to over 140 families. *All local synagogues and Jewish community organizations were invited to apply for funding.
