HONORING HAROLD FOX, OBM For 50 years, Harold Fox (OBM) served the most vulnerable families in greater Charleston as the Chair of Jewish Social Services and later Jewish Family Services. Harold worked humbly and quietly behind the scenes to support families in crisis, and helped rebuild their lives in Charleston. Harold’s legacy lives on through the Harold Fox Endowment for Jewish Family Services, which supports families today, and will continue to do so in perpetuity. To honor Harold’s work, consider donating or leaving a legacy gift to the Harold Fox Endowment for Jewish Family Services. For more information, please contact Sara Chesley at 843-614-6494 or saras@jewishcharleston.org.

The Charleston Jewish Federation could not do anything without the support of our donors and volunteers.

PLAN. ADVOCATE. FUNDRAISE. MENTOR. WELCOME. For more information on how you can get involved, please contact Judi Corsaro at 843-614-6480 or judic@jewishcharleston.org. Rebecca Engel at843-614-6484 or rebeccal@jewishcharleston.org.

THANK YOU Dear Friends: When you invest in YOUR Jewish Federation, you support the well-being of the entire greater Charleston Jewish community. The money raised through the Annual Community Campaign is allocated to support local Jewish entities through a competitive process in which all Jewish organizations are invited to apply. In addition, funding is allocated to our partner organizations to support programs in Israel and around the world, including Birthright, Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), American Jewish Distribution Committee (JDC), and World Ort. YOUR Jewish Federation works hard to obtain funding from sources other than the community campaign. In 2017, YOUR Jewish Federation received $313,689 in grant funding from local and national foundations, which helped cover the expenses for initiatives and services provided to our Jewish community. Overall financial resources were up 23%. YOUR Jewish Federation: • provides national initiatives and resources to the community that individual organizations and congregations would not be able to access; • allocates money for local initiatives at 14 local Jewish organizations; • helps engage the unaffiliated population and promote opportunities for families and individuals to participate in Jewish life on their own terms; • provides initiatives that support community members at all stages of life, from birth to older adults; and • spearheads and provides funding and/or professional support for community-wide events, task forces, and other opportunities that benefit our entire Jewish community. None of this is possible without you and we thank you for your support. We have Chai expectations for 2018!

Stuart Tessler, President

Judi Corsaro, Chief Executive Officer

YOUR FEDERATION ENGAGES THE NEXT GENERATION

Shalom Baby and PJ Library are examples of programs that help families in the greater Charleston area connect to their Judaism on their own terms. Supporting these initiatives is an investment in Jewish life for the next generation and beyond.

SHALOM BABY PLAYGROUPS

Shalom Baby supports Jewish families in greater Charleston by celebrating and welcoming them and their new baby into the Jewish community. Individual home visits support new parents and monthly get-togethers connect families to Jewish life. Shalom Preschool, organized by Shalom POPs (parents of preschoolers), is for families with children who have aged out of the Shalom Baby playgroups. The groups meet monthly helping create connections among young Jewish families

Shalom Baby Playgroup

“For the first time since moving to Charleston I feel like I’m building a community I want to be a part of. Without Shalom Baby, I don’t know if we would have found that.” – Alexa Galtman

PJ LIBRARY & PJ OUR WAY

Local Sponsors Linda & David Cohen Sandra & Howard Peskin Anita Zucker Gina & Sam Shapiro in memory of Freddie & Milton Kronsberg (OBM).

Over 450 local Jewish children receive PJ Library and PJ Our Way books each month thanks to a partnership between the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, the Charleston Federation, and generous local sponsors. According to Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s team of independent evaluators, 100% of inter-faith families who participate in PJ Library say the program has increased their confidence to engage their children around Jewish traditions, values, and customs.

YOUR FEDERATION DEVELOPS LEADERSHIP

NAGID 360

NAGID 360 is a dynamic group experience for a select group of local young Jewish professionals. While exploring Charleston’s diverse, vibrant and growing Jewish community, this second cohort learned how their campaign dollars have a direct IMPACT on local organizations. They did this by participating in a giving circle and allocated funding after providing the local organizations with the opportunity to apply. After graduating from the leadership program, participants have engaged in an array of different leadership roles within the Jewish community. Four of the participants formed an advisory committee for YAD, and are helping to plan and provide opportunities for young Jewish adults to engage in Jewish life on their terms. Another graduate joined the Federation board. Others are actively engaged in Jewish life and are participating in their synagogues, Jewish Studies, Chabad, JCC WOW, and Addlestone Hebrew Academy.

YOUR FEDERATION CARES FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE JEWISH COMMUNITIY MEMBERS

Charleston Jewish Family Services (CJFS) provides financial and emotional support and assistance to those in need in our community, regardless of age or affiliation. CJFS provides the following critically-needed services to community members: CJFS offers services and referrals for older adults facing the challenges of aging through the Senior Outreach Initiative. The goal is to maintain the independence and dignity of senior adults while keeping them connected to Jewish traditions and community. A priority is to take care of local Holocaust survivors. In 2017, the initiative provided the following services: • Phone points of contact with seniors: 5,512 • Visits to seniors, including home, hospitals, retirement centers, and nursing facilities: 511 • Assists with transportation: 68 • Out-of-state adult children requesting assistance for their senior parents living in Charleston: 6

Our Senior Outreach Initiative creates opportunities for Holocaust survivors to connect, including (left-right): Dinny Adkins, Ann Fields, Sylvia Zealberg, Joe Engel, Charlie Markowitz

Emergency Financial Assistance and Counseling: CJFS steps in to prevent a temporary setback from becoming a permanent crisis, working with a client in a holistic way. CJFS offered assistance in the following ways in 2017: • 113 times: Housing and utility assistance • 98 times: Medical assistance • 33 times: Transportation assistance • 4 times : Other emergency assistance (furniture, food, disaster relief) • 311 times: Counseling and case management sessions.

Ann Fields, one of our wonderful local Holocaust survivors had been driving around in the summer heat without air conditioning in her car. When the CJFS staff found out that she need some financial assistance to get the air conditioning in the car fixed, they immediately provided the funding.

“I could not have done it without your help. I am so lucky to have so many people care for me.” – Ann Fields For years, the Sherman House residents received groceries from the Kosher Food Pantry (KFP). In 2017, CJFS expanded their services to include weekly Kiddush get-togethers, Jewish intergenerational programming with PJ Library children, and special Jewish holiday celebrations. Residents have been enjoying these various activities, and Jewish senior residents from surrounding West Ashley neighborhoods have been attending as well. In addition to the Sherman House, CJFS distributed 21,079 pounds of food to needy individuals and families.

“Our collaboration with Jewish Family Services connects our residents to their Jewish community.” – Sandy Slavin, Sherman House Executive Director

3ND ANNUAL FIREFIGHTER APPRECIATION PROJECT On Christmas day, 47 fire stations all over the Greater Charleston area received visits and special treats prepared and delivered by volunteers. The Firefighter Appreciation Project, an initiative created by the Charleston Jewish Family Services, is a way to give back to our community and specifically our first responders, who are always there when we need them.

LIFE & LEGACY IS SECURING OUR JEWISH FUTURE

LIFE & LEGACYTM, supported by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and the Charleston Jewish Federation, will help ensure the financial sustainability of Jewish organizations in greater Charleston for future generations. During the first year in this program, 215 Letters of Intent (LOIs) were signed, signifying a donor’s commitment to leave a legacy gift to the local Jewish organizations that matter most to them during their lifetime. When the entire Jewish community thrives, everyone flourishes together. In fact, most donors (60%+) who signed an LOI during Year 1 chose to check more than one box on the LOI form, indicating their commitment to two or more organizations.

A legacy gift is an after-lifetime gift, included as part of a will or estate plan, or by beneficiary designation of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. No gift is too small and each gift goes into a permanent endowment fund in the Jewish Endowment Foundation for the benefit of the donor’s designated organization(s). The power of legacy giving is that one gift will help the organization every year in perpetuity. Giving once means giving forever.

Each one of us, regardless of our age, wealth, or affiliation has the power to create a legacy gift that will live on long after we are gone. Will you leave your legacy for Jewish Charleston?

“That’s why we give back, that’s why we do estate planning and participate in Life and Legacy. It’s not for us. It’s for the generations that come after us, so that they can benefit from all the opportunities that we’ve had plus more.” – Edward Kronsberg, Legacy Donor

Because of You

SECURING OUR FUTURE FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY Endowments are critical sources of funding for organizations. In fact, philanthropic experts predict that any organization that does not receive 20% of its operating budget from endowments by 2025 will be in fiscal crisis.

The Jewish Endowment Foundation of Greater Charleston (JEF) is a supporting organization of two partnering organizations: the Charleston Jewish Federation and Coastal Community Foundation of SC. In 1996, the Jewish Foundation of Greater Charleston was established as a collection of “composite funds,” each created by a different donor for a distinct charitable purpose. At the end of 2017, the Jewish Endowment Foundation funds totaled $15,226,765. The community is close to our collective goal of $20 million by the end of 2020. Preliminary evaluations of these programs suggest success in reducing isolation and promoting feelings of health and well-being among participants. This funding has helped serve or train approximately 15,000 people, including Holocaust survivors, family caregivers, and professionals who care for Holocaust survivors around the country.
