president’s message As I finish my term as Federation President, it seems appropriate to look back on our accomplishments over the last two years. I set two primary goals for my term.
steve ellenberg president
First, I thought it important for the Federation to increase its profile in the general community because I believe that the Jewish community has much to offer Silicon Valley and because by increasing our profile in the general community we would increase our standing in the Jewish community. I believe we have taken many positive steps in that direction. Through the leadership of City Councilperson Rose Herrera, the Federation, in conjunction with the City of San Jose has sponsored Jewish Heritage month for each of the last two years. This year, the event was chaired by JCRC board member Geoff Jackson. It is an awesome sight to see the Israeli Flag flying for a full week at City Hall. In addition through the efforts of Diane Fisher and the Jewish Community Relations Council, we have engaged in many outreach events with public officials and other communities. Diane spoke out against hate crimes in an OpEd in the Mercury News last fall, in response to the horrible murder of two Sikh men. Last year, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren addressed our community on the subject of immigration. These outreach efforts are important to promoting Jewish values including the centrality of Israel to our community. Second, we needed to confront the decrease in federation giving that started in 2008. We convened a blue ribbon committee and followed that with an extensive strategic planning effort by the Federation Board. As a result of this process, the Federation has started funding specific initiatives this year in addition to the allocations that we are making to our local agencies and overseas through Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Agency for Israel. This calendar year we will begin funding a teen philanthropy program to be administered by the APJCC and increase our community’s senior programming. The decision to fund these initiatives was made through extensive surveying of our donors and an examination of our community’s needs. In the future, we hope to add initiatives both overseas and locally where we believe there is an opportunity to improve our community. I want to thank the many volunteers who devote so much of their spare time to doing the hard work necessary to make our community successful. I also want to pay tribute to the Federation’s dedicated staff. Over the last two years, the Federation Board challenged the staff to think differently about the Federation’s operations. Jyl Jurman, Cathie Whalen, Arielle Hendel and the entire staff responded to the challenge with fresh thinking and devotion to improving our mission. Last, I want to thank my wife Susan and my children Zachary, Molly and Naava for their love and toleration of the many hours it takes to serve as Federation President. This job is both challenging and rewarding. I look forward to serving this community for many years in the future.

c eo’ s m e s sag e “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.” -Tony Robbins This past year, the leadership of the Jewish Federation took on the daunting task of developing a strategic plan. Part of the process was to assess our strengths and weaknesses and to determine a path for our future. We worked with a consultant who simultaneously worked with the East Bay Federation to tackle some of the same issues. This effort was done with grants from The Koret Foundation and The Jewish Federations of North America. We elicited opinions from all segments of our community and hope we captured the essence of the collective in our newly minted strategic plan. When we embarked on this endeavor, Rabbi Jim Brandt, CEO of the East Bay Federation, expressed our simultaneous efforts to develop a new narrative of vision:
jyl jurman ceo
Ø Imagine a community in which the greatest challenges and the most exciting opportunities to strengthen and build the Jewish people are discussed, studied, and understood. Also imagine that we come together to determine how we can have the greatest impact and drive resources to where they are needed most. Ø This is the vision at the heart of the Community Impact Model. Through this new vision for Federation, we will have the opportunity, capability, and capacity to come together to tackle the principle challenges of our local community and work with our global partners to take collective action on behalf of the Jewish people. The most fundamental decision was to adopt a community impact model for funding that we are calling initiatives. Basically, this means the Federation wants to leverage our community’s capacity and inter-agency collaboration. Moving forward we also recognize the need to focus on Planned Giving and Endowment, work with other agencies to leverage the power of our communities, continue to define and promote initiatives and, provide leadership recruitment and training. In addition, we have committed to: •
CONVENE our Jewish community to identify key challenges and opportunities and to develop strategies to address them
•
SERVE our community by providing the venue for leadership, priority setting, discussion, decision-making, and funding of communal projects and initiatives
•
STRENGTHEN relationships with donors and partner organizations to increase funding and address shared-goals
Change involves disruption and risk, as long-held perceptions, brand messages and practices shift. We must meet these challenges head on with courage and dignity. strategic planning committee Sheryl Lewis, Chair Matt Blecher Steve Ellenberg Arnnon Geshuri Steve Green Al Guggenheim Jeff Kanel Judy Levin Tina Rosenblum Joel Rubnitz
This has been a tough process which required many difficult conversations. Ultimately, all plans become a compromise between idealism and realism – I think we struck a balance which reflects our community’s interests and aspirations. I want to thank all the community members who cared to join us in the process. Ultimately, my goal for the Federation is to be nimble enough to respond to individuals’ philanthropic interests and financially secure enough to maintain the necessary infrastructure for a thriving, caring Jewish community. As always, I invite you to join us in our work. Some say it’s holy work – I say it’s wholly fulfilling. Finally, I would like to thank Steve Ellenberg and the Board of directors for their extraordinary effort this year. Steve will be stepping down as President this year having accomplished all he set out to do. Thank you for your time and effort on our community’s behalf.

Mikvah The Mikvah of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley opened in 2009 and has been serving a wide spectrum of the Jewish community. In 2011, nearly 150 people immersed in the Mikvah. Rabbis from synagogues as far south as Monterey and as far north as Foster City have made use of the Mikvah for immersion of those entering the Jewish community by choice. One prospective convert came from South Carolina and completed his immersion here in Los Gatos. The Mikvah has an active steering committee which presented two very well received events. They produced Ruach Nashim which brought together women of a wide spectrum of Jewish observance to explore mikvah as part of their personal spirituality. The committee also created a wonderful program: Afternoon with Mayim Bialik in May. The event attracted over 175 people. Several of the attendees were inspired to immerse in the mikvah by Dr. Bialik’s personal accounts. Deborah Zimmer chairs the Mikvah committee. The Mikvah has a cadre of 15 Mikvah guides, 11 women and 4 men who volunteer to accompany people to the Mikvah for conversion, monthly immersion, before marriage, before Shabbat and Holidays and at times of life transition of all kinds. Our Mikvah is most often used for traditional immersion experiences, but many community members are discovering the meaning in immersing surrounding health, birthdays, pregnancy, renewal, job change and more. Jan Rose is the chair of Mikvah Operations and arranges for all immersions, gently and respectfully enabling people to have the most meaningful experience at the Mikvah. Rabbi Leslie Alexander, Jewish Community Chaplain, serves as the Rabbinic Advisor and staff to the Mikvah committee. Rabbi Avi Lebowitz, of the Jewish Study Network, is the rabbinic supervisor of the mikvah and Len Connolly, the Levy Family Campus facilities manager maintains the mikvah to the highest standards.

Chaplaincy Rabbi Leslie Alexander has served as the Jewish Community Chaplain for 14 years. She created this position and has forged long standing relationships with the Silicon Valley community. Rabbi Alexander serves seven hospitals in the Silicon Valley area. She visits patients and is a Jewish connection at Kaiser Santa Clara and Kaiser San Jose (Santa Teresa), O’Connor, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, St. Louise (Gilroy), El Camino Los Gatos and Good Samaritan. She sits on two hospital ethics committees, Good Samaritan and the Neo Natal committee of Valley Medical. Rabbi Alexander serves as a community resource for individuals and agencies seeking assistance with Jewish information, referrals for life cycle events and limited counseling on religious issues. She works in tandem with several local hospices to offer religious visits to patients. The community chaplain works along with the local Jewish mortuary to provide Jewish burial for those in need or without family. The chaplain does funerals and unveilings for unaffiliated individuals that the chaplain has visited regularly during hospitalization. Rabbi Alexander also serves as Jewish chaplain for the San Jose Fire Department. An example of the additional activities of the community chaplain in the month preceding this report include teaching a hospital staff about Jewish customs and laws surrounding illness and death, attending an ethics consult at a hospital in response to physicians desire for ethics guidance in regard to a patient, working along with a hospital in structuring written religious information for staff resources and involvement in the dedication of a hospital meditation room. This position is funded in part by a generous grant from Wells Fargo Bank.

PJ Library The PJ Library program of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley is completing its fourth year. Nearly 800 children in our community, aged six months through seven years old, receive the high quality, colorful, Jewish books, which are offered to families at no cost. The program is funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation in Massachusetts, the Jim Joseph Foundation of San Francisco and now, several generous local funders who are ensuring the continuity of this unique and powerful program. Programs encouraging families to participate “beyond the books” are offered by our program on a monthly basis in cooperation with a large cadre of “constituent partner” organizations, synagogues, schools and local agencies with whom the events are offered. PJ Library also does wider community outreach in cooperation with malls and other secular organizations to expand the reach of the program. The PJ Library program is so successful due to the extraordinary effort of its volunteer committee led by Eleanor Dickman.
PJ Goes To School In the past year, the Jewish Federation and five local pre-schools, Temple Emanu-El, Sinai Nursery School, the APJCC, Congregation Shir Hadash and Gan Aviv (South Peninsula Hebrew Day School) applied for the opportunity to be a part of a new beta test of PJ Goes To School for 3’s and 4’s classrooms. We are proud to report that we were invited to join the program, which offers a large selection of PJ Library books sent monthly to each school along with curriculum guides and program ideas for how to convey the Jewish values in the books. PJ In the Classroom participating schools also receive hands-on teacher training three times as year locally, led by the director of the national program.
Sifriyat Pijama B’America In April, our Federation was again honored to be approached by Sifriyat Pijama B’America, the PJ Library book program in Hebrew. Sifriyat Pijama B’America is being funded by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, the Adam Millstein Foundation of Encino, CA, and the Israeli Leadership Council. Yavneh Day School was invited to be the location at which families can sign up for the books. Current enrollment in the program, will deliver books eight times a year to children of Israeli families, ages 3-6. By grant guideline, guaranteed enrollment has to occur only when the family engages with the local community day school and has an experience helping to introduce them to the possibilities for their children’s Jewish and secular education. Only 27 day schools nationwide are included in this opportunity.

Shalom Baby The Shalom Baby program of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley delivers a gift bag and does a “mazel tov” community outreach visit to parents of newborn Jewish babies in our area. The program is chaired by Elise Wolf. These deliveries are made directly to the hospital when possible and home visits are also made when that is more convenient for the parents. Deliveries are also made for adoptive families. Examples of what the gift bags include are: a beautiful, laminated guide to celebrating Shabbat with babies and children, information about the PJ Library book program to which the parents can subscribe on behalf of their child, an information and help guide about Jewish birth traditions and how to connect with community, information about the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley Programs and other communal programs, a stuffed animal, hand-made blankets donated by the “knitzvah” group or the Girl Scouts, under the auspices of Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley and a copy of the latest Jvalley.news. Several hospitals in the area contact us (with families’ permission) when a Jewish child is born. Local preschools, pediatricians, family members and friends also make referrals. The program has just received a grant from the Myra Reinhard Foundation which will assist in the continuity of the program. Shalom Baby is always delighted to have the assistance of the community in conveying the news when a baby is born.

Campus Seven years after opening the doors, the campus continues to be the central address for Jewish life in the South Bay. It continues to be the home to the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley, B’nei Brith Youth Organization, Yavneh Day School, and PSA Soccer Academy. This year, a myriad of events were hosted on the campus including: an international soccer match, Project Noah, Chanukah Palooza, Holiday Boutique and Mah Jongg tournament, Jewbilee, two Red Cross blood donations, voting polls and a plethora of private and corporate events. Private parties are renting the auditorium for Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremonies and parties, weddings, and Quinceaùeras. The campus also serves youth year round with academic, camping and afterschool activities. The maintenance staff works diligently to maintain the commonly used space to ensure an easy transition and minimum wear and tear between school and camp sessions. With all this activity, it has been incumbent upon the Governance Committee to stay abreast of the routine and emergent maintenance of the facility. With over 14,000 weekly visitors, the campus wear and tear can be significant. Towards that end, the Governance Committee approved the updating and upgrading of the auditorium. The new auditorium is a draw for event rentals and community events. A hearty thank you to the committee for their work on the remodel. With the apt fiscal guidance of the Goverance Committee, the campus has been safeguarded to facilitate its many visitors and is in a position to absorb the ongoing maintenance. In fact, the CAM (common area maintenance) charge has been maintained flat which assists all campus agencies with their overhead and budgets. The Governance Committee has also reviewed all significant vendors for the campus resulting in retendering of bids. The Jewish Federation continues to oversee yearly testing of life safety equipment in compliance with local ordinances. Key personnel were trained in emergency shelter operations.

JCRC 5772 began solemnly, with the tenth anniversary of 9/11. JCRC helped us reflect on our communal response to this horrific event by bringing together local government and interfaith groups. Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Howard May, the commemoration event held at the McAfee Center included a screening of the powerful documentary Love Hate Love, a film about the transformative capacity of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The heroic power of the individual to confront evil touched us again later in the year, with the panel exhibit on the righteous Portuguese diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes. So many people asked, “How is it I never knew this story?!” Learning the story of a man who decided he would “rather stand with God against Man than with Man against God”, when he provided the largest single rescue operation during the Holocaust, has been life-changing for many. The JCRC hosted the 21-panel exhibit at Archbishop Mitty High School, at the Santa Clara County Government Building, and at the Addison-Penzak JCC, and over the course of those six weeks, hundreds of people learned about the Sousa Mendes legacy. That legacy came alive when we heard from Prof. Nathaniel Deutsch, co-director of the Jewish Studies Department at UC Santa Cruz, speak about his own father who was saved by Sousa Mendes. The final JCRC program of 5772 was the Interfaith Economic Justice Seder, graciously hosted by Doris and Rick Davis. The seder was led by Rabbi Pressman with singing led by Cantor Meeka Simerly. A creative hagaddah was prepared that allowed guests from San Jose State University and the Interfaith Council on Economics and Justice to experience the most widely celebrated Jewish holiday. No one who attended will ever forget the wonderful klezmerstyle clarinet and guitar duo that graced the entire evening with joyous music-Father Jon Pedigo and Rabbi Berkenwald! Catholic-Jewish relationships in Silicon Valley got a boost, and the Muslim and Christian participants couldn’t help but feel the power of music too. Along with key programs such as these, the 24 board members of JCRC kept busy throughout the year building relationships as they put Jewish values into action. With the help of a grant from the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, funded through MAZON, JCRC had a Hunger Fellow this year from September through April. Through screenings of Food Stamped, a documentary produced by a local Jewish couple, a greater understanding of poverty and the food stamp system was gained by students at Yavneh, Beth David and Shir Hadash Hebrew High, and Hillel. More than 150 low-income people from the east side of San Jose were successfully helped through the process of applying for food stamps by the JCRC Hunger Fellow. Tikkun Olam is alive and well at the Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, and our community is a bit better as a result.

Wallenberg Leadership Program The Wallenberg Leadership Program (WLP) is a Federation leadership program designed to give young emerging leaders the insight and skills that will help them in their personal and professional lives and empower them to lead the Jewish community into the future. It is open by invitation to young couples who have a strong commitment to our Silicon Valley Jewish community. WLP gives ambitious 25-45 year-olds the tools they need to develop leadership skills, gain a deeper understanding of our local and overseas Jewish communities, and learn to effectively address the issues and challenges facing us today as a Jewish people. Upon completion of this eighteen month program, graduates should be inspired to serve on committees and/or boards of our local agencies and synagogues. Women’s Philanthropy The Women’s Philanthropy Board is a group of dedicated, passionate women who year after year ask members of the community to donate through personal connections and hold wonderful events which educate and delight. This year was no exception. The board was led by co-Presidents, Ginny Baird and Susan Gavens. Together the women met monthly to discuss many and varied topics. We started the year with a discussion of Viktor Frankel’s Man’s Search for Meaning with Rabbi Yoshi Fenton (now with the Bureau of Jewish Education); solicitation training with Julie Krigel, Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign Chair; women in politics with the leaders of Project 2012; the importance and etiquette of lobbying at the local, state and national levels with Diane Fisher of the Jewish Community Relations Council; Israel-American political relationship with Tom Johanix of AIPAC; addressing local needs with Cherie Ravel of the Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley; Torah Study with Rabbi James Greene of the Jewish Center for Jewish Life and Learning at the APJCC; and, we had a special presentation from Ruth Sporer, the first President of the Women’s Division of the Jewish Federation. Ruth emphasized that while much has progressed in the building of a local Jewish community, the need for the women to meet, educate and inspire has not changed since 1967. The Board also supported many local programs through their volunteerism. The women prepared a Shabbat dinner for the students at Hillel of Silicon Valley in December. The proceeds from the third Annual Holiday Boutique chaired by Barbara Bleadon and Susie Brenner and, the third Annual Mah Jongg Tournament chaired by Karen Guggenheim and Doris Katz went to support the APJCC’s Maccabi Games scholarships and JFS’s Embrace-aFamily program, respectively. These two annual programs continue to outreach to women in the community. The highlight of the programming year was the Mollie Katzen event in February. Many thanks to the The First Republic Bank for sponsoring this very special program. Karen Guggenheim was honored as the Janet Berg Award winner for her outstanding volunteerism throughout the community. The standing-room-only event was chaired by Madelyn Isaacs.

Young Leadership The young leadership of the Jewish Federation world took on a new direction in 2011. Getting away from a traditional board or committee dedicated only to the Federation, a council of young leaders were convened to focus on the Silicon Valley Jewish community as a whole. The “Tribal Council”, as it was named, is made up of 22 young (20’s and 30’s) Jewish leaders in the Bay Area (mostly South Bay and Peninsula) and these adults meet on a monthly basis to discuss collaborative programming, shared resources and obstacles the different groups face. The 22 representatives are volunteers and/or staff from many of the local Jewish organizations and come with diverse outlooks on observance, Jewish life and the Jewish people. Convening this group has allowed Federation to have a place in various young adult happenings, as well as continuing to be a resource for the age group in a way that is most beneficial to the groups involved. Collaborative events in 2011-2012 included Chanukah and Purim extravaganzas, as well as a social action evening in partnership with the Religious Action Center (RAC). Many of the Tribal Council participants, as well as those involved in local organizations, attended the 2012 TribeFest, a three day conference hosted by the Jewish Federations of North America. The conference was held in Las Vegas during March and was attended by nearly a dozen Silicon Valley participants, where individuals could engage in conversations about multiple facets of Judaism, from spirituality to tikkun olam (repairing the world). Planning is underway for TribeFest 2014.

Communications In September 2011, our community newspaper received a facelift. Moving from the Jewish Community News (JCN) to the hipper, new JValley.news, the paper now features the same simchas (celebrations) and community calendar highlights as before, with even more community news and interactive columns dedicated to the community. The community newspaper went online in an interactive format in Fall of 2010 and has had over 25,000 online readers since the launch of the online site. Supplemental information can be found between issues (the paper is published bi-monthly) online at the Federation website (www.jvalley.org) or on the community blog (www.levyfamilycampus.com.) The community blog is now in its second year and features photos, upcoming events and news relevant to the Jewish community. Hosted by the Jewish Federation, numerous community members guest post to the blog with their content and offerings. In addition to the Federation blog, Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley staff also guest blogged for the Campbell and Los Gatos Patch sites, bringing Jewish community news and insight to these more secular venues, welcoming the unaffiliated and uninvolved. With the launch of the new website in 2010, readership began to hit all-time highs. The Federation is pleased to announce that over 1,000 new visitors explored JValley.org in 2011-2012, with the most popular page being the community calendar. The community calendar features events from all of the local Jewish organizations. In addition to our print communication and website, the Federation sends out a weekly e-mail which averages an open rate between 23 and 42 percent depending on the content. These rates are well above the industry average (just over 20 percent.) Federation content and updates can also be found on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, FourSquare, LinkedIn and various community websites.
