from the ceo How we help when tragedy strikes One of the commonly used taglines of our Federation and others is “No gift touches more lives.” If you’ve read any of our materials, visited our website or seen a Federation video recently, you are likely aware of the basic facts: • we support Jewish life in Silicon Valley, domestically and in over 70 countries, including Israel; • we support humanitarian needs, not political campaigns; • we feed the hungry, educate the young and assist the elderly. The same gifts that provide this support to hundreds of thousands of people worldwide also provide the platform we rely on in times of immediate and intense need. This platform allows the Jewish world to respond immediately when disaster strikes, such as the recent tragedy in Nepal. When hurricanes, tsunamis, floods or earthquakes occur, the Jewish Federation and our partners are on the ground with humanitarian relief - often within hours. When a donation is made to support those affected by disaster, our platform allows for 100% of the donation to go directly to those affected. When you support the Jewish Federation, you are supporting the Jewish world and promoting Jewish values for all people. Your gift to the Federation allows us to respond to needs, locally and nationally, big and small, as they arise. Thank you for being a part of our network and supporting the needs of our community. No gift touches more lives. Jyl Jurman, Federation CEO

Two views of Israel By Rabbi Melanie Aron I have two images that remain vivid from my month in Israel this winter. The first is a candidates’ night sponsored by the Jerusalem Post and the Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel, and the second is a bus ride in Haifa along the spine of the Carmel. A few weeks before the election, I joined several hundred English speakers in a crowded basement in Netanya, to hear from representatives of seven of the parties on the ballot in the then upcoming election. These included the Likkud and Zionist Camp (Labor), Meretz on the left, HaBayit Hayehudi and Israel Beyteinu on the right, and the center parties of Yesh Atid and Kulanu. Most were represented by native English speakers, born either in the U.S. or U.K. who had made Aliyah as young adults. The audience was quite divided, with loud support both for the smaller left and right wing parties, support in greater proportions than these parties ultimately pulled in the election. The Arab List was not represented, nor were the ultra-religious parties Shas, Yachad, and United Torah, though issues related to religion in Israel and Israeli Arabs were hot topics in the question and answer period. I was blown away by how publically the representatives of the Jewish Home (HaBayit HaYehudi), and Israel Our Home (Yisrael Beyteinu) parties expressed anti-democratic positions, and by the willingness of others in the room, including the Likud representative, to designate these positions as unacceptable and even fascist. The spectrum of views expressed was much broader than one typically experiences in the American Jewish world and the disagreement was quite intense. If the only experience I had in Israel on this trip was that candidates’ night, I would have come back to the U.S. with concerns about the chronic instability of Israel’s political system, and about Israel’s future as a Jewish and Democratic state given the enthusiasm expressed by some for Naftali Bennet or Avigdor Liebermann. In the actual election, Bennet’s and Lieberman’s parties each lost seats as compared to the number they had in the past. The second image in my mind is quite different. Most of my visit was spent in Haifa, a city often likened to San Francisco because of its hills and beautiful views of the bay, but which could also be considered like northern California in its diversity and comfort with pluralism. The Technion, where my husband Michael was being hosted, is located in a religious neighborhood, and relations between the Orthodox and secular residents were comfortable. The Ahmadiya neighborhood in Haifa, home of teachers, engineers and of the head of the Arab List in the recent election, is very much part of the city. Visiting in Kababir there is no sense of crossing a line and being in a different world as you have in Jerusalem when you enter the Arab neighborhoods on the east side of the city. In Haifa you see the emergence of Israel’s Arab citizens into the middle class which leads to competition for jobs, education and housing, but which is ultimately a good sign for the future of the country. My ride on the bus along the spine of the Carmel touched many neighborhoods and I heard Hebrew, Arabic, Russian and Amharic. People sat together and spoke without tension. One moment that made an impression on me was when students from the Arab town of Issafiya, who attended Christian Arab private schools downtown, greeted Jewish Israeli students who attended Jewish schools but with whom they had social ties through sports and other activities. Haifa reminded me of Atlanta’s slogan in the 1960s, the “city too busy to hate.” While Jerusalem, is called “the city that prays,” and Tel Aviv, “the city that plays,” Haifa is known as the city that works. More diverse than Tel Aviv and perhaps not as much fun, it absorbs religious difference much more calmly than Jerusalem. Two moments, two images. An image of discord. An image of concord. Both are snapshots of what exists today. May they carry the seeds of a strong and peaceful future!

Shir Hadash loans Torah scroll to Israeli Reform congregation Facilitated by the World Union of Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) Shomrei Torah project, the Rosh Pina Reform Congregation (RPRC) received its first Torah scroll from Congregation Shir Hadash with a Hachnasat Sefer Torah ceremony on March 20.

Congregation Shir Hadash’s Rabbi Melanie Aron, who was on sabbatical in Israel, was able to personally attend the ceremony. “We were inspired by the Rosh Pina Reform Congregation’s strong community connections and commitment to bringing Reform Judaism into schools, as well as their commitment to regular worship,” she said. “We look forward to a strong and enduring relationship with Rosh Pina as they grow and prosper as a congregation.” RPRC’s Rabbi Goal Ben-Chorin noted that “the two congregations are now building bridges through Torah.” The Hachnasat Sefer Torah ceremony took place in the 130-year-old courtyard of the building that RPRC is temporarily calling home. Musicians played as congregation members brought the Torah Scroll into the synagogue. Portions of the scroll were then aloud, including the opening verses of the Torah, the middle verses instructing congregants to love the re’a, and finally the concluding verses. The local family that built RPRC’s first Ark then attached the parochet, the ritual curtain that adorns the Ark. The parochet was hand made by one of RPRC’s founding members two years ago. Six other community families had earlier chosen verses and embroidered them onto material prepared by yet another family. The belt was then wrapped around the Torah, forever binding tradition, innovation and the Rosh Pina community together. It can be a challenge for a young congregation to acquire a kosher Torah scroll, the most basic and central Jewish spiritual object. The WUPJ’s Shomrei Torah project works to pair established Reform congregations who can temporarily spare a Torah scroll with congregations that need one. Congregation Shir Hadash first participated in the Shomrei Torah project in 2010, by loaning a Torah scroll to a congregation in Germany. After a few years that scroll was passed on to a new congregation in Sha’ar HaNegev, Israel. When the Sha’ar HaNegev congregation was able to secure their own Torah scroll, the scroll was made available for a new loan. “In our early days, Shir Hadash received a Torah scroll that survived the Shoah from the Westminster Torah Project,” Rabbi Aron explained. “We were happy for the opportunity to return the mitzvah.” To date, the Shomrei Torah project has succeeded in sending over 100 Torah scrolls to progressive congregations around the world.

l cal news Community generous in donating time and food for Passover By Lori Cinnamon, Coordinator of Volunteer Engagement, JFS SV Jewish Family Services wishes to thank their Passover Food Drive community partners for their help in collecting much needed food for vulnerable families and seniors: Jewish Federation, AddisonPenzak JCC, Congregation Beth David, Congregation Sinai, Congregation Shir Hadash, Temple Emanu-El, South Peninsula Hebrew Day School, and Yavneh Day School. Support from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program combined with community donations enabled JFS to pack 480 Passover packages: 270 Passover packages for families and seniors in need, as well as 210 individual Passover bags to seniors in retirement homes and nursing facilities. Many volunteers devoted their time to help those in need celebrate the beautiful and vital tradition of Passover. These dedicated men and women took the time not only to pack and deliver Passover food, but also to share their time with frail seniors and have wonderful and meaningful visits. Over 35 visits were made with seniors in their residences during Passover. Young people in the community helped with strong participation, too. The Jewish Federation NextGen group sorted food from the Passover Food Drive and helped get out a Passover mailing. The Congregation Beth David JET group packed large food packages. Yavneh students and two b’nai mitzvah teens came with friends to decorate and pack small food packages for seniors in retirement homes and assisted living facilities. The wonderful JFS Chaplain Aides participated too by leading meaningful services and seders for our seniors in facilities. All in all, the community came together to make Passover happy for many appreciative families and older adults.

“L’Dor V’Dor”: Hillel of Silicon Valley thanks community for support By Barbara Illowsky, Event Chair “I can’t wait for next year!” “Don’t change a thing!” “We loved the entertainment!” “Keep up the fabulous work!” “The student greeters and tables were terrific!” These comments and others werecheard throughout Hillel of Silicon Valley’s (Hillel SV) annual fundraiser luncheon on March 15, this year titled “L’Dor V’Dor” (“From Generation to Generation”). Over thirty students graciously welcomed, performed and educated the 130 community members about Jewish life on our South Bay campuses and at the Hillel House. After ten years of “Pillars of the Community,” Hillel SV changed not only the event name, but also the program style. Students greeted the community as they arrived at the Fourth Street Garage in downtown San Jose, guiding them up the elevator to the seventh floor. Students set up tables in the reception area, showcasing the activities on campus, at the Hillel House, in the community, and in Israel. Attendees experienced this “tabling” much the way a college student might do on the campuses. While students and donors mingled, they enjoyed Helaine Green’s challot and Sheila Taylor’s fine wines. (Well, just the donors sipping the wines, of course!) They were also given the opportunity to enter the raffle to win one of several exciting items, such as a “night out on the town,” Celebrity Forum season tickets, and more. Once inside the banquet room, Board President Andrew Katcher, just back from two weeks in Israel, welcomed the attendees; Rabbi Hugh Seid-Valencia led motzi; and everyone enjoyed a buffet luncheon. Entertainer Robert Strong delighted the audience with jokes, magic, and family fun. He was also the emcee, auctioneer, and led the donating for the Werba Family Student Initiative. This year, Hillel SV recognized Jack Moore and Bonnie Slavitt Moore with an extremely deserving “Community Leadership Award.” The award recognizes their philanthropic investment in the local Jewish community, especially in Hillel SV, and their donation of time, mentoring, and expertise. Also honored at “L’Dor V’Dor” were students Amber Artman of San Jose State University and Kyle Gerner of Santa Clara University, for their leadership and dedication. Robert Strong was not the only entertainer of the event. The students dazzled the crowd as well. They sang “Gesher Tzar Me’od” and wrote and performed a dramatic skit about the increasingly frequent challenges they face as Jewish students on college campuses. They highlighted the disturbing and more common atmosphere of animosity toward both Israel and Jews. The students also produced an uplifting slide show of the fun experiences they have, including learning, Shabbat dinners, and tikkun olam. According to Sarita Bronstein, Hillel SV’s executive director, “The students enjoyed the event very much; they are already looking forward to next year’s!” Special thanks go to The Arcadia Companies, Loring Ward, and Werba Rubin Wealth Management for their multi-year sponsorship of the annual fundraising event. Hillel SV truly appreciates their and the community’s support, investing in our students’ transition as they become our future leaders. As Board President Andrew Katcher exclaimed, “I couldn’t be prouder of the fantastic students, staff and board members who put this amazing event together. I’m honored to be associated with the Hillel SV organization and can’t thank the community enough for its support of our organization.” Toda Raba!

All three of Kehillah’s teams made the National Junior Classical League Championships. Both Latin I team (Jacob Fernandez, Avi Kaplan-Lipkin, and Ben Darnell) and Advanced Team (Jonathan Nozik, Jacob Kaplan-Lipkin, and Noah Weiss) took the California State Championship, Advance team for the third year in a row (Mark Treitel is also normally part of the team but was unavailable for this particular event), an outstanding achievement against 17 other schools in the division. Latin III team (Mat Grinberg, Renny Glasner, and Sam Feldman) also made it to finals. (Also on Latin III team are Abigail Amit and Indiana Podbere, who were unavailable for this particular event but contributed to making it to CAJLC semi-finals.) l cal news Jewish American Heritage Month By Diane Fisher, Community Relations Council Director This May is the ninth Jewish American Heritage Month since it was proclaimed by President George W. Bush. May was chosen after the 350th anniversary of American Jewish history was celebrated in May 2004. We share the month with Asian and Pacific Islanders; a plethora of ethnic celebration months are found on the calendar. These celebrations provide a sense of pride for the group celebrating what is beautiful, meaningful and valued in its culture. California and the Bay Area are particularly rich with cultural celebrations, as a minority-majority state and a region where diverse cultures have garnered respect and appreciation. That said, Jews in general are still a bit hesitant to be publically Jewish. We all know that Jewish culture has deeply affected American culture—where would TV be without Seinfeld, where would lunch be without bagels. But outside of New York City, Jews tend to keep a low profile. In the face of recent Anti-Semitic incidents, it seems a particularly important moment to raise the bar for celebrating Jewish American Heritage month. Following a flag raising and proclamation ceremony on May 12 sponsored by Vice Mayor Rose Herrera, the Jewish Federation is going all out this year with a party in the plaza at City Hall on Sunday, May 31 from 3-5 pm. The Reggae/World Music Band Lior Ben-Hur will perform, sharing his Sol Tevel Project as well as his latest songs. Bring your kids, your friends and neighbors of all stripes, and take the afternoon to enjoy and be proud of Jewish American culture. More information on the May 31 event is on the back page and at www.jvalley.org/jah.

The National Junior Classical League The National Junior Classical League is an organization for middle and high school students in classical courses. NJCL proudly holds the honor of being one of the largest academic youth organizations in the world. There are over 50,000 members in approximately 1,200 chapters, located in almost every state and in several foreign countries. Established in 1936, the organization seeks to promote the study of Latin and Greek, to benefit students and teachers alike, and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of classical antiquity.

A Shavuot nighttime experience including learning and reflection on the themes of darkness and light and culminating in a modern interpretation of Tikkun Hatzot, midnight meditations initiated in the Talmudic period. Cheesecake will be served of course!

The California Junior Classical League Convention We believe an acquaintance with the civilizations of Greece and Rome will help us understand and appraise the world of today, which is indebted to the ancient civilization in its government and laws, literature, language, and arts. The California Junior Classical League was founded in 1955 to provide a forum for Latin students to compete in a wide range of academic, art, and athletic contests, both individually and by chapter. Kehillah Jewish High School Coupling the best of the Silicon Valley mindset with rich traditions, Kehillah Jewish High School attracts those who seek world-class academics in a supportive community, empowering them with the knowledge and strength to flourish in a rapidly changing world with Kehillah as their anchor, their beacon, and their identity. At Kehillah, students embark on a journey of self-discovery guided by a community of passionate educators. They graduate with the knowledge, values, and community that enable them to create extraordinary futures.

9:30am Special Shavuot program for kids, teens and adults. Choice of traditional Shavuot service or “I Love to Leket” experiential pilgrimage stations. 11:30am Book of Ruth skit Siyyum (finale). 12:00pm Free Shavuot picnic lunch to follow. Bring dessert in a basket to share. And a can of fruit for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Song Leader Boot Camp By Adam Sprintz Song Leader Boot Camp (SLBC) is an inspiring, programmingpacked conference for song leaders. It is a yearly event in mid February where 100+ song leaders from around the US come together to improve their song leading skills the minute they walk through the door! The magic of SLBC is that every song leader who comes has a different method of leading and has something to share about the art of Song Leading. As a 17-year-old high school junior and a third time participant, I found the course selection to be varied and new. An important aspect of SLBC for me is making connections. I took classes, played guitar, sang and connected with Junior Song Leading teens from around the US. But most people who attend are adults — song leaders, cantors, even rabbis. Others I connected with are famous song leaders — Ellen Allard, Rick Recht, and Sheldon Low just to name a few! These amazing Jewish artists have inspired and influenced me to advance both my guitar and leadership skills. Each time I attend SLBC I become aware of additional skills I can improve. I recognize that song leading is more than just playing a guitar and singing in front of a group — interacting, being poised and confident in front, controlling and choosing what to play and say, and engaging the group with enthusiasm are equally important. The SLBC is a rewarding convention and I am grateful that I got a chance to improve my skills!

l cal news Freedom Seder for over 150 attendees By Galina Chyorny On April 5, one hundred and fifty five people came together in the auditorium of the Levy Family Campus to say “Next Year in Jerusalem” at a community Passover Seder for Russian-speaking seniors. In the spirit of the Passover song Dayenu Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley would like to thank those supporters without whom the event would not have been possible. This event was Rabbi Ilana Baird and children at Freedom Seder generously funded by Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, and supported by many volunteers. Dayenu! — that alone would have been enough for us. Rabbi Ilana Baird led the Seder with tradition and humor. Dayenu! — that too would have been enough. Volunteers of all ages helped reach out to the participants and set up the tables. Dayenu! — it would have been enough. But, the event had all that, along with an excellent meal from caterer Lucy Fried and classy entertainment from pianist Caroline Menipaz and her daughter. Many who had been to prior Freedom Seders, along with some for whom this was their first Seder experience, called to say thank you for the wonderful time they had. As Rabbi Baird said at the conclusion of the evening, “If not in Jerusalem, let’s meet right back here, same time, same place.” Sounds like a great idea!

Santa Cruz Hillel welcomes new staff member Faced with a troubling rise in anti-Israel and anti-Semitic activity at UC Santa Cruz and Cabrillo College, Santa Cruz Hillel has taken the proactive step of hiring Jocelyn Robinson as Israel Engagement Professional. Jocelyn will be working as the point person to respond to anti-Israel activities on campus by supporting and empowering students who want to stand up for Israel as well as working to expand the number of students connected to Israel in this way. Jocelyn will also collaborate with organizations and communicate with supporters and community members regarding what is happening on campus. Jocelyn spent two years as Santa Cruz Hillel’s program director and was responsible for developing many pro-Israel events that highlighted Israel’s numerous contributions to the world. She was also deeply involved with working with students responding to and opposing two prior anti-Israel BDS resolutions before the UC Santa Cruz student government. In addition, Jocelyn brings first-hand knowledge of life in Israel from her numerous trips to Israel and leading multiple Birthright trips. Jocelyn is uniquely qualified to fill this need. In thinking about this role, Jocelyn commented, “I think that it’s important that our students have extra support, now more than ever. When it comes to Israel, students are facing more hostility, more misinformation, and more efforts to treat Israel differently and more harshly than other countries.” Santa Cruz Hillel is incredibly grateful to the numerous rabbis, community leaders, parents and friends who came together to fill this important need. For information about this new staff position or any other matter affecting Jewish life at UCSC or Cabrillo College, please contact Santa Cruz Hillel Executive Director Jim Atkins at jim@santacruzhillel.org or (831) 426-3332.
