Dear Readers,

A

in her family is immune-compromised and the family needs to quarantine. Therefore, in order to cheer this girl up they figured they would get her a snow cone machine, rather than them each getting a prize for themselves.

These are local girls...in fifth grade!

I couldn’t stop thinking of this story all week, and I think it’s worthy of sharing.

As we enter the week of Tisha B’Av we often think of how much sinas chinam there is and how we have so much to work on. That may be true, but there is also so much ahavas chinam.

What these fifth grade girls did is not an isolated event. Our community is filled with people who consistently do amazing acts of kindness for one another. But, unfortunately, that doesn’t usually get the press. With all that is going on now there are so many opportunities to care for each other. Perhaps that’s a silver lining to this whole thing— the opportunity to increase ahavas chinom.

Sometimes, though, it takes thinking like a fifth grader— giving up our inhibitions and self-consciousness and just doing it.

In the merit of all of the good deeds being done by Klal Yisroel for each other may we merit the coming of Moshiach and the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash.

lthough I am grateful that our kids have camp this summer, I do sometimes find the daily carpooling to be somewhat annoying. But taking into account all that has transpired over the past few months, this is at most a minor nuisance to be dealt with. One nice thing about picking up my kids from camp is that I get to hear in real-time how their day was. It usually involves reports of water fights, slurpees and fun surprise activities.

But one day this week my ears perked up when my daughter was talking about what transpired in camp that day. She related how the head counselor called all of the girls together and pointed out two fifth grade girls and told the whole camp about something that they did. The story amazed me.

There was a fundraising drive for a certain tzedaka organization that the girls were raising money for. In return they were able to pick out presents, depending on how much they raised. These two girls pooled their money and told the counselor in charge that they wanted a snow cone machine. The counselor asked the girls why they don’t just each get something for themselves because it’s hard to split a snow cone machine.

The two girls told the counselor that the snow cone machine was not for them. They explained that they had another friend who was unable to attend camp because someone

Dear Editor, The American Press Institute defines the job of a journalist as “[Journalists] should be as transparent as possible about sources and methods so audiences can make their OWN ASSESSMENT of the information.”

Regarding the responsibility that journalists have to citizens, the API says, “They must strive to put the public interests and the truth- above their own self-interest or assumptions.” The API is no conservative think-tank; it is led by a man named Tom Rosenstiel who has slammed Trump for his comments about the media. Despite Mr. Rosentiel ignoring his own organization’s definitions about the job of a journalist, he calls Trump’s comments “Orwellian”. President Trump has repeatedly slammed the media as the ‘enemy of the people”. With recent journalism patterns, President Trump has been proven correct per the definition from the API. Bari Weiss, who has also repeatedly slammed President Trump, last week resigned from the NYT and slammed the environment which made her come to this

decision. She writes, “[There was] constant bullying by colleagues who disagreed with my views.” One of the media’s own journalists is slamming the way the media is. Andrew Sullivan is another Anti- Trump reporter who also resigned for similar reasons. The commonality between these journalists is that they’re both anti- Trump, but now admit the problem with the “woke” media that President Trump has slammed for years. The API set down guidelines for journalists, it is a shame the media doesn’t listen to them. The socalled “journalists” out there are the “enemy of the people”, they only care about their self-interests or assumptions (Jim Acosta, Don Lemon, etc).

Trump is a disruptor of the status quo. He points things out which are wrong which have been tolerated for too long.

It is about time that journalists start working for the truth and the people once again!

Dear Editor, This Tisha Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Av there will be a fascinating video being shown by Project Inspire which will feature Rabbi Shlomo Freifeld Ztâ&#x20AC;?l and Rabbi Ronnie Greenwald Ztâ&#x20AC;?l. As a girl who grew up in Far Rockaway in the eighties and who spent years at Camp Sternberg I can tell you that although these were two very different individuals, they are well paired due to their mutual love for Jews. Rabbi Freifeld lifted broken neshamos, starting in the sixties, and Ronnie looked after all of the girls in Camp Sternberg, and anybody else he crossed paths with, but had a special place in his heart for those who had difficult situations.

He cared for them as if they were his own children. He made them feel accepted and loved. I urge everyone to watch this video on Tisha Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Av. Sincerely, Chani W. ‘Black Forest Rambo’ Nabbed in Germany

German police nabbed a fugitive popularly known as ‘Black Forest Rambo’ after six days on the run.

The criminal named Yves Rausch, 31, was caught hiding in a patch of bushes “with four guns visible in front of him.” German police said that they had been summoned to his hideout after receiving two tips from a passerby who claimed to have seen

him walking alongside a dirt road.

Besides for the four weapons, Rausch was carrying an axe and a machete. “I am relieved, happy and grateful that this exceptional situation for our town has come to an end,” said Oppenau Mayor Uwe Gaiser.

The saga began after German police were summoned to a hut in Baden-Württemberg after passersby reported seeing a “suspicious” figure wearing camouflage gear and carrying weapons. After being confronted, Rausch held four police officers at gunpoint and stole their firearms before disappearing into the Black Forest.

The next week saw Germany gripped by one of the country’s largest manhunts in his history as a large force of several hundred emergency services and helicopters were sent to look for him. The search included 2,530 officers, tracking dogs, and German special forces.

Rausch is believed to be homeless and authorities said that he managed to evade them for so long due to his extensive knowledge of the local area. “We assume that the 31-year-old moves confidently through the rough terrain around

Oppenau and knows the area very well,” police said.

Iran Halts Execution of Three Young Protesters

Iran’s highest court temporarily halted the execution of three anti-government protesters following a viral online campaign.

Amirhossein Moradi, Mohammad Rajabi and Saeed Tamjidi were arrested after participating in massive anti-government protests in November. They later confessed to a slew of offenses including sabotage, armed robbery and illegally fleeing the country, and were slated to be put to death this week.

But after the Supreme Court

decided to uphold the sentence on Sunday, millions of Iranians took to social media to voice their anger against the decision. The Persian hashtag #do_not_execute was used more than 8 million times in 24 hours as citizens expressed their opposition to the executions.

President Donald Trump also showed his support for their plight and tweeted messages of support for the three men in English and Farsi.

Iranian newspapers also joined the campaign, printing banners reading “Hold on” and “477”, in reference to an amendment in Iranian law that allows the chief of the judiciary to overturn verdicts.

As public anger rose, the Supreme Court announced that it would reexamine the death penalty, temporarily staying the executions.

The men will now appear before a judge again and will be allowed to present new evidence.

Iran executes more people every year than any other country in the world besides China. According to human rights groups, 251 people were put to death by Iranian authorities since January, including to the opposition journalist Ruhollah Zam and two Kurdish men.

Mexico Probes Video Showing Cartels using Advanced Military Gear Mexican authorities are investigating after videos surfaced that show cartel gunmen using advanced

military-style armored vehicles.

“The propaganda video attributed to a criminal group is being analyzed to confirm its authenticity and when it was filmed,” confirmed Security Minister Alfonso Durazo. He added, however, that “no criminal group is capable of successfully defying the federal armed forces.”

In the video, at least 70 heavily armed paramilitaries belonging to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) can be seen outfitted with

high quality military equipment. The gear includes factory-made military vehicles, firearms with advanced telescopic sights, and body armor.

The military-style jeeps were reinforced by heavy 50 caliber beltfed machine guns while another 20 pickup trucks had specially designed holes for gunners. The vehicles were emblazoned with the CJNG’s coat of arms and appear brand new.

The footage suggests that cartels have managed to get their hands-on

up Newsight is collaborating with Sheba Medical Center to identify and classify evidence of coronavirus in the body in less than a second, using a sample of fluid – blood serum or saliva. Concrete results of the trial are expected within the coming months.

Newsight employs spectral technology (using light waves) to develop advanced image sensor chips for 3D machine vision and spectral analysis. The sensors have been integrated in dozens of devices and solutions in various fields including robotics and automotive industrial manufacturing. The use of spectral technology to detect the presence of pathogens is not new, but to date, has necessitated a cumbersome, costly device. The new innovation being piloted with Sheba involves a cost-effective chip.

Experts from Sheba’s Infectious and Tropical Disease departments are already working with Newsight.

Initial studies of the device’s ability to identify the coronavirus has shown an accuracy of close to 100%.

Newsight and Sheba’s ARC Innovation Center intend to establish a joint company that will make the instant COVID detection test commercially available to the medical community worldwide.

“Newsight is yet another outstanding example of how Sheba Medical Center and the Israeli start-up ecosystem are working in tandem to reinvent existing technology to battle the scourge of COVID-19,” said Dr. Eyal Zimlichman, Chief Medical and Innovation Officer at Sheba.

With most restaurants forced to close due to the rising rates of in-

fection, Tel Aviv’s ‘Go Noodles’ has found a novel way to operate: preventing staff and customers from having any physical contact throughout their dining experience.

Go Noodles’ new setup features a giant touch screen at the entrance of the restaurant that is to be used by customers for ordering. After the food is prepared, it is placed in a glass locker while the code to open it is sent to the customers via SMS. Done properly, the innovative system ensures that there is virtually no risk of catching the deadly pandemic. Servers do not interact with customers, the store does not accept cash, and all orders must be paid for online.

“I came up with this concept a year ago with no connection to the coronavirus, from a business and financial need,” said Shmulik Gal, the restaurant’s manager. “As fate would have it, the coronavirus broke out a few months ago and this thing gained major significance.”

Gal had originally come up with the idea prior to the global COVID-19 outbreak. The Tel Avivian figured that with rising overhead costs, operating a “bare bones” system with no servers could save money. But with eateries limited in how they could open for business, Gal realized that the time had come to turn his vision into a reality.

“People are looking for less contact with others, less intermingling, less touching,” Gal said. “I think this thing has a lot of strength and people will embrace it.”

As of last Thursday, a search of the word “Palestine” in Google Maps yields only the West Bank and Gaza Strip without any additional identifying information. However, the two aforementioned technology giants had never listed Palestine in the first place.

After the discovery, Palestinian and other left-wing activists circulated an online petition demanding that Google and Apple recognize ‘Palestine’ as a country. “We’re all deleting Google Maps until it acknowledges the #FreePalestine’s rightful place on the map,” tweeted prominent activist Issa Amro from Ramallah.

Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Riyad Al Maliki fired off an official complaint to the tech behemoths that blasted them for submitting to Israel’s “pressure and blackmail.”

“Removing Palestine from the maps was not a coincidence. Rather it was a prelude to the implementation of Washington’s Middle East plan and the last nail in the coffin for the Palestinian issue,” said Maliki.

The minister added that Google and Apple “may be able to remove the name of Palestine from the maps, but they will not be able to remove it from the souls of the Palestinians, no matter how long it takes.”

The Hamas terror group also weighed in, stating through a spokesperson that the two companies are complicit in “a denial of historical facts and a move that contradicts international and humanitarian laws ... making it possible for Israel to continue and violate international laws and decisions.”

The current controversy is not the first time Google has been accused of erasing the State of Palestine. Four years ago, the search engine giant

was condemned by the Forum of Palestinian Journalists ‘condemning’ Google for not marking Palestine on its map service.

IDF Topples Hezbollah Drone Shooting Music Video

The IDF hacked a Hezbollah drone that was videoing a music video the terror group was producing for its leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The Iranian-backed militia had been using one of its drones to shoot footage of the Hezbollah band performing a rendition of a popular anti-Israel song. But after the drone crossed into Israeli airspace, hackers hijacked the drone and sent it crashing down to earth. “IDF soldiers spotted and monitored a drone infiltrating Israeli airspace from Lebanon earlier this evening,” confirmed the IDF in a statement. “We will continue to operate to stop any attempt to violate Israeli sovereignty.”

Bolton Warns That Trump will Turn his Back on Israel Former National Security Advisor John Bolton warned that President Donald Trump was liable to turn on Israel should he win a second term.

In an interview with Israel’s Army Radio, the former senior Trump administration official said that a president without any pressure to be reelected would be free to embark on policies that would hurt Israel. While acknowledging that Trump had largely promoted pro-Israel policies during his first term, Bolton said that this was mainly an effort to please his base.

Should he win a second term, Bolton continued, Trump would have more leeway to embrace Iran similarly to how he engaged North Korea to the detriment of its southern neighbor. According to Bolton, who has since written a tell-all book about the mercurial president, Israel needs to act in its own interests until the US goes to the polls in November, and disregard any pushback from Trump.

“Trump is motivated much more by domestic American politics, which is why if it turns out he is reelected in November, we don’t know what he is going to do once he is freed from electoral constraints,” Bolton said.

“Which is why anyone who is concerned about what happens in the Middle East should worry about what happens in a second term.”

“I think the next few months are an optimal time for Israel to act in its own national security interests,” Bolton said.

When asked if Biden would be good for Israel, Bolton replied that both the Democrat and Trump were equally bad for the Jewish State’s wellbeing. He also went on record supporting the recent series of suspicious blasts at Iranian nuclear sites but said that he had no idea who was behind it.

“I don’t claim to have any special knowledge as to how these various events happened. They seem clearly aimed at the Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile programs,” Bolton said.

“I think whoever is doing it, they have my complete support. Maybe it’s dissidents inside Iran, maybe with outside support, maybe a combination.”

Anti-Netanyahu Demonstrations Turn Violent

Dozens of protesters were arrested after demonstrations against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu turned violent on Saturday evening.

For months, thousands of self-employed Israelis and leftist activists have been rallying on Saturday evenings throughout the country against Netanyahu. In recent weeks, the protests have swelled in both number and intensity amid the country’s worst economic crisis in its history.

In Jerusalem, the protests began in Paris Square and poured into nearby streets. Chanting “Corrupt, Go Home,” throngs of people marched

to the Prime Minister’s Residence where they scuffled with law enforcement. Fifteen people were arrested after attacking police officers and were denied bail.

In Tel Aviv, thirteen protesters were taken into custody after blocking traffic, hurling heavy objects at police officers, and lighting dumpsters on fire. Police called in reinforcements after the throngs turned violent and refused to disperse.

The protesters belong to a slew of assorted groups with different objectives. While the “No Way” NGO wants Netanyahu to resign due to his multiple criminal indictments, the ‘Shulmanim’ movement wants increased financial assistance to self-employed Israelis whose businesses were gutted by the coronavirus.

The scenes of so many people crammed together during the worldwide coronavirus pandemic led Likud lawmakers to call for a ban on rallies to prevent increased infection.

“To approve mass demonstrations that pose a health hazard to all Israeli citizens, while closing many businesses that adhere to the guidelines on the other, is absurd,” said Likud MK Miki Zohar.

Justice Minister Avi Nissenkoren rejected Zohar’s demand, writing that he would do everything in his power to safeguard the “sacrosanct” right to protest as is customary in a democracy. “Even under limitations, we will ensure civil rights,” Nissenkorn wrote on Facebook. “The fundamentals of democracy are important during regular times, and even more important during emergencies.”

Netanyahu to Fire COVID-19 Panel Head

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would fire MK Yifat Shaha-Biton from her post as the head of the Knesset’s COVID-19 panel on Saturday.

Netanyahu’s decision to axe the young lawmaker came after she defied the premier and refused to shutter gyms, restaurants, and beaches.

Shasha-Biton had told Channel 13’s ‘Meet The Press’ television program on Saturday evening that she would not accede to the prime minister’s orders unless he presented data showing that gyms were known causes of infection.

Despite Netanyahu’s anger, Shasha-Biton dug in her heels and maintained that she would not destroy the livelihoods of so many Israelis if there was no obvious health imperative justifying it. In a series of tweets after being fired, the Likud legislator declared that she was prepared to be removed from her senior position if it meant assisting struggling small business owners.

“I am a member of the coalition and respect the decisions of the government. A key part of the Knesset’s work is to review the work of the government. When there are mistakes, they need to be corrected,” tweeted

Shasha-Biton.

“My job is to examine the best ways to fight the virus, to maintain the mental and physical health of the citizens and to save the livelihoods of tens of thousands of workers,” she added. “I entered politics for one purpose: to serve the people of Israel.

If I have to pay a personal price for it, I will accept it with love.”

Shasha-Biton’s refusal marks a rare case of public insubordination vis a vis Netanyahu from a serving Likud member. The clash between the two politicos comes amid rising public anger against sudden largescale shutdowns meant to combat the spread of the coronavirus that are not backed by data or medical opinions.

On Thursday, Netanyahu ordered hotels and restaurants to shutter for the weekend and after 5 P.M. on weekdays effective immediately.

However, the timetable for the closures was delayed until Tuesday after hundreds of establishments signed a petition vowing to defy the order.

Saying that the lockdown was thrust upon them with no notice, the restaurants said that they would lose considerable sums of money from the food they were now forced to throw away.

revealed in late December 2019 that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer during a regular medical checkup.

“It is with inconsolable grief and enduring sadness that we announce the passing of US Rep. John Lewis,” said the Lewis family. “He was honored and respected as the conscience of the US Congress and an icon of American history, but we knew him as a loving father and brother. He was a stalwart champion in the on-going struggle to demand respect for the dignity and worth of every human being.”

“He dedicated his entire life to non-violent activism and was an outspoken advocate in the struggle for equal justice in America. He will be deeply missed.”

Born to a poor sharecropper father in Alabama, Lewis took an active role in the civil rights movement in the 1960’s after meeting Rev. Martin Luther King. The last surviving member of the ‘Big Six’ civil rights activists, Lewis participated in the lunch counter sit-ins and the Freedom Riders.

In 1963, Lewis organized the March on Washington and spoke shortly before King took the podi-

um for his iconic ‘I Have A Dream’ after his passing was announced on speech. Oregon Sues Over Federal Agents in Portland Oregon’s Attorney General has sued the US government over its use of unmarked federal agents to battle

radical Antifa rioters in Portland.

In the lawsuit, Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum asked for a restraining order that would remove agents from the Department of Homeland Security, US Marshals Service, US Customs and Border Protection and the Federal Protection Service from Portland’s streets.

“These tactics must stop,” said Rosenblum. “They not only make it impossible for people to assert their First Amendment rights to protest peacefully, they also create a more volatile situation on our streets.”

Rosenblum added that using militarized agents are “entirely unnecessary and out of character with the Oregon way.”

“The federal administration has chosen Portland to use their scare tactics to stop our residents from protesting police brutality and from supporting the Black Lives Matter movement,” she said. “Every American should be repulsed when they see this happening. If this can happen here in Portland, it can happen anywhere.”

The lawsuit came after video clips surfaced showing heavily armed and masked agents detaining Antifa rioters in Portland and putting them in unmarked cars. The vehicles then speed off to an unknown location.

The agents also used crowd dispersal methods such as tear gas and rubber bullets to battle rioters who attempted to destroy a courthouse and police station in the Oregon city.

The agents belonged to a patchwork of outside agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, the Customs and Border Patrol, and the US Marshals Service and are operating without the approval of the mayor, the state, or local municipalities.

MLB to use Artificial Crowd Noise Despite a total ban on fans from entering the ballparks, baseball

players will take to the field next week to the roar of an adoring crowd.

Like professional soccer, Major League Baseball (MLB) executives decided to pipe in crowd noise during games to avoid strange silences and keep America’s pastime as familiar as possible. As part of the plan, stadium sound engineers will be given a soundtrack of 75 different crowd noises including booing and standing ovations that can be played at their discretion.

The crowd reaction was originally created for the ‘MLB The Show’, which developed the artificial stadium soundtrack to make the video game sound as realistic as possible.

But with only athletes being permitted to enter ballparks, Sony En-

tertainment was asked to provide a variation of the crowd noise for all 32 MLB stadiums to use once the season gets underway.

The crowd noise is only one part of an elaborate plan designed to make games seem as authentic as they were before the devastating pandemic hit. Stadiums will still feature in-game announcements, walk-up music, and video highlights and will place cardboard cutouts of fans in the empty seats in order to mimic the in-game experience.

“There was some reticence when you first talk about crowd noise in an empty ballpark because you don’t want to do something that is distracting,” said Chris Marinak, MLB’s Executive Vice President for strategy, technology, and innovation. “It is heard in a way that is natural with the play of the game and on-field. The sounds do match what is happening.”

The idea was taken from the UK’s Premier League, which adopted artificial crowd noise when resuming competition earlier this year. The NBA is also said to be collaborating with 2K Sports prior to its reopening in Florida.

A Japanese baseball team, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, were not going to play baseball in a stadium devoid of fans so they came up with an imaginative replacement: dancing robots.

When it was announced that due to COVID-19 no fans will be allowed to attend, the team’s management commissioned over 20 robots to dance to the team’s fight song in the otherwise empty stands.

Chris Dens, 30, of Brainerd, a Minnesota man who got bored of regular water skiing took his hobby to the next level by going out on the lake wearing 11-foot stilts. Dens took on the challenge after seeing a video of Glenn Sperry water skiing on 8-foot stilts.

Dens started on 3.5-foot stilts, worked his way up to 6.5-foot stilts and finally made it happen on 11-foot stilts. The skier, a founding member of the Brainerd Ski Loons Water Ski Show Team, plans on making stilt skiing part of next year’s ski show.

Missing Dog Made 60-Mile Journey to Family’s Former Home

A dog that was missing from her Kansas home for a week turned up at her family’s former home – 60 miles away in Missouri.

A family in Lawson, MO was surprised to find a dog on their porch and even more surprised when they checked the canine’s microchip and discovered that

the 4-year-old golden retriever belonged to the house’s former residents. They discovered Cleo’s owner, Drew Feedback, had posted about the missing canine on Facebook about a week earlier and the reunion was arranged - about 60 miles away.

Both families said they are at a loss to explain Cleo’s long journey which would have required the canine to cross a river to make it back to her former home.

Community No Camp? No Way! We Nageela B’Simcha Forever!

s a New York-based sleepaway camp, Nageela wasn’t able to host campers as usual this summer. This was crushing news for many of our kids who depend on us as their home away from home. However, that decision didn’t stop us from presenting our programming in a different way -the show must go on and not just on Zoom!

In the past two weeks, JEP/ Nageela has hosted in-person events and an overnight with campfires,

boat rides, and much-craved camaraderie. Our camp parents said it best with their gracious feedback: “Camp Nageela and the entire staff is AMAZING! Thank you all for being kind, generous, and making all of our kids feel like they are your close family members!”

“I really just wanted to take the time to say thank you. Gabriella has been on cloud nine. Thank you so much to you and the amazing staff for organizing the overnight and all of the virtual activities. It

an social distancing be compatible with social events for singles? With government and medical guidelines preventing in-person activities for the foreseeable future, YUConnects has been re-imagining meeting opportunities with activities that are more popular, and even more successful, than ever before.  â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the Plan? Building Wealth in a Pandemicâ&#x20AC;Śand Beyondâ&#x20AC;? was a unique singles Zoom event created for the Covid crisis - and the new dating era. Last Wednesday, nearly 90 young professionals were provided key financial planning guidance by Stacey Zrihen, the senior financial advisor for Achiezerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Westwood Financial Management Program. Her interesting and clear PowerPoint presentation explained budgeting basics, the difference between an ETF and a Mutual Fund and current investment strategies, plus much more. The Zoom chat allowed the participants to ask about student loans, savings priorities and a host of other queries appropriate for the millennial crowd. What made the event stand out more than any other informative Zoom lecture, were the breakout rooms that followed. The men and women â&#x20AC;&#x153;movedâ&#x20AC;? into smaller online groups of 10-12 people, with a friendly matchmaker/facilitator. Savings

vs. spending attitudes and financial preparedness for marriage led to interesting and lively conversations.   â&#x20AC;&#x153;I rarely go to a singles event which offers information on important topics like financesâ&#x20AC;? said one 28-year-old woman. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad I was able to attend!â&#x20AC;? An additional benefit was that a virtual event was able to accommodate participants worldwide. One young man joined from Israel (it was 4 am for him!) and others joined from Wisconsin, California and Ohio. YUConnects staff and the volunteer matchmakers have been following up the numerous requests after the event, encouraging everyone to accept a one-on-one video chat or phone call with a participant. Many agree with â&#x20AC;&#x153;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a callâ&#x20AC;? concept and are now broadening their horizons.  Since the event on July 15th, a number of new couples have already connected and chatted privately. Traditional opportunities to meet often revolved around college campuses, camps, workplace or weekly Shabbos meals with friends.  Those avenues are now largely closed.  Creative methods are necessary to connect men and women in an appropriate and meaningful fashion.

Former Lawrence Resident Alex Grossman Teams Up with LA Rabbi to Create International Jewish LEGO Masters Competition

A

s soon as they heard that camps would likely not open for the summer of 2020, their brains immediately kicked into thinking gear. Rabbi JJ Duchman and Alex Grossman both grew up in different camps since the ages of 4 and 5. They understood what it meant for children not to be either in sleep away camp, or even day camp for one Summer.

JJ Duchman is currently the Youth Program Director at Young Israel of Century City in Los Angeles. For five years he worked as the Program Director at Yavneh Hebrew Academy and he ran their Summer Camp for five years as well. Alex is a preschool teacher at Yavneh Hebrew Academy and an ABA Therapist. They have been involved in running various programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities over the years. When JJ approached Alex with his idea to !!!‫בס"ד‬

develop The Jewish LEGO Masters, she immediately jumped on board!

JJ and Alex had a rough time narrowing down the semi-finalists,

but after much debate they chose 14 families. These 14 families were elated to hear the news of them moving onto the next level. Their parents filmed them to capture their reactions on video which were priceless!

Through emails they kept everyone posted on their Instagram page @ jewishlego, where personalized posts were posted for each winner.

A Zoom conference with the finalists was arranged where their next challenge was announced. The challenge was to build “Summer 2020,” the way each contestant imagined it.

Everyone has different perspectives on life during a pandemic so it will be interesting to see them express their outlook on the summer during this time.

Contestants have been working around the clock to finish their pieces! Was it mentioned that challenges were required to be completed in just 3 hours?! Each family filmed themselves (mostly using a time lapse), to show how they executed their plans in the allotted time. Just last week, JJ and Alex held inter-

views for the finalists. Alex interviewed three families in NY while JJ interviewed two families in LA. The contestants from Montreal, Arizona, London, Australia, Pennsylvania, Florida and Texas were instructed by Shawn, the videographer, on how to set up interviews from their homes.

Shawn is hard at work in LA pulling everyone’s content together to create the first episode which streamed on July 9th.

Pheffer Amato Distributes Masks and Hand Sanitizer to Local Synagogues

T

his past week, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-South Queens) delivered masks and hand sanitizer to synagogues throughout her district.

Since the start of the pandemic, Pheffer Amato has delivered masks and hand sanitizer to dozens of religious institutions as congregations are able to increase their capacity indoors.

“As we continue to move through our phased reopening, temples all over my district are eagerly welcoming back their congregants – a great sign of a return to normalcy,” Pheffer

Amato said. “I love personally dropping off the supplies and catching up with the community. Every little bit helps, and I’m happy to do my part to help my community return from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic safely.”

HANC Plainview Creates Lending Library

W

ith the Public Libraries having limited resources available and parents nervous about the “summer slide” more than ever, students at HANC Plainview (both Nursery and Elementary level) now have access to over 300 brand new books. The Al and Claire Rothschild Memorial Lending Library opened last week, and families can request up to three books per child via Google Form and pick them up. Each family has a personalized library bag for picking up requests and dropping off returns.

by School Librarian, Francie Gold-

berg, whose mission is to foster a love of reading and keep up the momentum of reading physical books despite the current pandemic. During the school year, she held weekly Facebook Live Storytimes and had faculty members read bedtime stories as “Mystery Readers” once a week.

“Parents had asked for access to the School Library while school was closed but there are so many books unaccounted for right now, and funding the library is never a top priority, so I really could not afford to lose any more materials by allowing parents to take out books for their children from there. These conversations

also made it clear that parents need access to books for their children to read, and not just ebooks, so I immediately jumped on the opportunity to fill this need for our school community” said Mrs. Goldberg.

There are board books, beginner readers, early and middle grade chapter books as well as graphic novels, fiction and non-fiction for every level of reader. The library follows the cleansing protocols of the American Library Association so no books are passed directly from household to household.

The Al and Claire Rothschild Memorial Lending Library is made pos-

sible through the generous donations of the Rothschild extended family along with a few other families who wish to remain anonymous. Each book has a special dedication inside in the hopes of continuing the legacy of Al and Claire Rothschild who believed one grows through reading, and you can never stop learning because there is always something new to explore. This collection will be used throughout the upcoming school year, to ensure that whether the classroom learning takes place in person or virtually, all HANC Plainview students will have access to physical books.

COVID-19 Rent Relief Available

T

he past four months have been extremely challenging times for many community members. COVID-19 presented a health crisis that our country has not seen in over 100 years! In addition to the health crisis, many community members are struggling with the COVID-19 financial crisis. With unemployment numbers through the roof, many are struggling to pay their rent.

The N.Y.S. Department of Homes & Community Renewal (HCR) has released 100 Million dollars to assist community members behind on their rent due to COVID-19.

The COVID Rent Relief Program will provide eligible households with a one-time rental subsidy that will be sent directly to the household’s landlord or management company.

Applicants will not need to repay this assistance. The COVID Rent Relief Program is not first come, first served. Applications will be accepted throughout the two-week application period. HCR will prioritize eligible

households with “greatest economic and social need” accounting for income, rent burden and percent of income lost.

The rental assistance payment will cover the difference between the household’s rent burden on March 1, 2020 and the increase in rent burden for the months the households is applying for assistance. Households can apply for up to four months in rental assistance.

The JCCRP has been an HCR partner for over 20 years, assisting community members with eviction prevention, landlord-tenant mediation, first-time homebuyer workshops and many other community enhancement programs.

World Mizrachi Defies COVID-19 Hurdles to restore gap year funding for international yeshiva and seminary students in Israel

W

orld Mizrachi is leading an unprecedented coalition of 50 Israeli yeshivot and seminaries spanning the Torah spectrum to restore gap year funding for international yeshiva and seminary students in Israel that was withdrawn owing to the severe COVID-19 crisis.

Each year, over 3,000 post-high school young adults pursue advanced Jewish studies at Torah institutions in Israel which are part of this coalition. The Emergency Campaign aims to ensure that every American, British and Canadian gap year student from affiliated institutions can participate in the coming academic year.

To reverse a shortfall in scholar-

ship subsidies, the World Mizrachi coalition is launching an emergency crowdfunding campaign on Monday, July 27, 6 Av, ahead of Tisha b’Av. Masa Israel Journey together with the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Government of Israel will provide matching funds of 3:1 for a significant amount of the emergency campaign subsidies target.

Mizrachi also plans to launch a Gap Year Division to support and advocate for Torah institutions across Israel, as well as the students and global Jewish communities they serve.

Making a Difference While Making a Living

W

hat do an accountant, a locksmith, an office manager, and a dentist all have in common? While not traditional educators, over the past two years, each has made a major positive impact in the life of a struggling youth.

They have been willing to open up their professional spaces to share with a young adult who was seeking direction or meaning in life. By offering internships and entry level positions, the accountant, locksmith, office manager, and dentist -- among many others -- have given our young people not only real life skills and experience -- but also a sense of belonging and value they had not found before.

You see, when a young person who has not found social or academic success in the traditional yeshiva system is given the opportunity to succeed in a professional setting, amazing things can happen. When a teen who has never experienced real progress and success has the op-

portunity to shine through work, an inner fire is lit. Doors that were previously slammed shut can open wide.

It is this belief in every young adult in our community that inspired Mrs. Yael Wedeck and Mrs. Rivka Ariel to found Work At It in 2018.

Distressed by the growing trend of young people in our community leaving the educational system and experiencing a lack of direction and purpose in their lives, Wedeck and Ariel crafted programs to help these young people discover their strengths, locate meaningful employment, and find a sense of purpose.

Chazaâ&#x20AC;?l teach us about the value of hard work, and how the benefit from one who is able to sustain himself with his own work is in fact even greater than one who is G-d-fearing (Berachot 8a). The Rambam in Hilchot Talmud Torah 3:11 adds that this was the practice of the early sages, Chassidim HaRishonim, and encourages all of us to continue in this way. Giving a young person the

opportunity of getting the feeling of success and productivity that comes along with a job well done is truly an incredible gift.

By partnering with Work At It, professionals from all fields have been able to make real, significant improvements in the lives of young people, while reaping benefits for themselves and their businesses. For some teens, a full time job involving intense manual labor provides the physical exertion that they need to feel strong and accomplished. For others, shadowing or assisting a skilled professional gives them hope and a vision towards the future.

Finding a mentor who cares for their wellbeing and believes in their abilities can be absolutely transformative.

Involvement in real world experiences of all sorts can be impactful in so many ways.

Work At It attracts young people with all types of talents and skills, each charting his or her own path.

New Dirshu Program for Bachurei Yeshivos Starting This Rosh Chodesh Av “Bezechus HaTorah” Program Will Provide Bachurim with a Unique Opportunity

e are living in unprecedented times! Since Purim, many of our holy yeshivos have not been functioning regularly. Although boruch Hashem, in some places throughout America there has been great improvement, there are still so many bachurim who are not in their regular misgeres, framework of a yeshiva. In Eretz Yisrael and Europe things are even less stable.

So many camps are closed or running on a limited basis. Thus, our most precious treasures, our bachurei yeshivos, upon whose learning the world stands, especially those who do not have a framework of a regular yeshiva or camp, are

having a much more difficult time structuring their day in ways that are optimum for their ruchniyus.

Rebbeim and Roshei Yeshivos have expressed their feeling that for many bachurim the present matzav is a crisis situation.

As bein hazemanim was approaching, several gedolei Roshei Yeshiva expressed their concern for the welfare of the continued shteiging of the wonderful bnei yeshivos.

They felt the need to create some kind of framework to offer bachurim the structure so necessary for continued growth in learning and protection from the various nisyonos that characterize our times.

Prominent among these Roshei Yeshiva was HaGaon HaRav Boruch Dov Diskin, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva at

Yeshiva Orchos Torah, the yeshiva established by HaGaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, zt”l.

The Importance of Structured Learning For Bochurim in the Age of Corona Rav Boruch Dov approached the hanhala of Dirshu in Eretz Yisrael and begged them to create a special learning program that would start with the advent of the upcoming bein hazemanim that starts on Rosh Chodesh Av. The program would include tests and generous stipends thereby encouraging a framework for spiritual growth during this difficult time-period.

In addition, Rav Diskin went to the senior Rosh Yeshiva of our time in Eretz Yisrael, HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of the Ponovezh Yeshiva to ask for his advice and bracha. Not only did Rav Gershon enthusiastically endorse the idea, but he also signed a letter encouraging bachurim the world over to join.

Numerous other gedolei Eretz Yisrael who were approached were similarly deeply pleased, and encouraged Dirshu to undertake the program and called on all bachurei yeshivos to join the program.

In addition to Rav Gershon,

those who signed the special kol korei included the Sar HaTorah, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, shlita, Chacham Shalom Cohen, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshivat Porat Yosef, the Vizhnnitzer Rebbe, shlita, the Sanzer Rebbe, shlita, and HaGaon HaRav Shimon Baadani, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva Torah V’Chaim.

In America, too, HaGaon HaRav Yeruchem Olshin, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva, Beth Medrash Govoha of Lakewood, penned a special letter praising the program. HaGaon HaRav Elya Ber Wachtfogel, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Zichron Moshe, South Fallsburg and HaGaon HaRav Aryeh Malkiel Kotler, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Beth Medrash Govoha of Lakewood, endorsed the program as well.

Rav Olshin: It Is Incumbent On All Bnei Torah To Strengthen Themselves In his letter, Rav Olshin addresses the bnei yeshivos directly. “Now, as bein hazemanim - a time that always needs chizuk and especially this year - approaches,” the Rosh Yeshiva added, “it is incumbent on all bnei Torah to strengthen themselves with all of their might, especially in light of the rifyon that we have just sustained.

“How important, therefore,” Rav Olshin writes, “is the amazing work of the Dirshu organization that has designed a specific, detailed learning program starting on Rosh Chodesh Av wherein bachurim will be able to strengthen themselves in learning Torah and mussar with yegiah, according to a specific schedule…”

“Bezchus HaTorah Yinatzel Haolam” The program, entitled “Bezchus HaTorah Yinatzel Haolam” or “The Bezchus haTorah” program for short, will focus on learning Perek Keitzad Mevarchin, the 6th perek of Masechta Brachos, which is a very practical, geshmake limud.

Every weekday, the participants will learn one amud of Gemara with Rashi and Tosafos while Friday and Shabbos will be consecrated for chazarah. Thus, two and a half blatt will be learned every week and all ten blatt of the entire perek will be learned between Rosh Chodesh Av and Rosh Chodesh Elul.

Another component of the program will be daily mussar learning with Dirshu’s Kinyan Chochma program. The limud will be the fifth perek of Pirkei Avos with the commentary of Rabbeinu Yonah and the sixth perek with the commentary of Rashi.

There will be a test on Wednesday, 29 Av/August 19, and Dirshu will be giving a very substantial stipend for excellent results.

The program is open to all mesivta and beis medrash bachurim.

In addition, Dirshu will be making shiurim available on the phone from gedolei marbitzei Torah and Roshei Yeshiva on the perek. There will be shiurim in pshat on the blatt with Tosafos, as well as iyun shi-

urim. The tests will only be on the Gemara, Rashi, Tosafos and mussar but the shiurim will be available as extra aids for learning.

In the letter to bachurei yeshivos the world over, the gedolei Roshei Yeshiva and Admorim of Eretz Yisrael write, “We call on our beloved bnei Yeshiva to strengthen themselves in Torah learning and constant review.

The Dirshu organization should be praised for establishing a special program starting on Rosh Chodesh Av for bnei yeshivos who need great chizuk to continue toiling in Torah.

“Learning, especially at this time, a time of difficulty for klal Yisroel, has a special quality…

“May we all merit that in the zechus of Torah and those who learn Torah the entire world will be saved and may we merit the salvation of Hashem in the blink of an eye.”

“The Program is a Great Yeshuah for Our Bachurei Yeshivos” Indeed, Rav Diskin related, “I see this carefully planned and constructed program by Dirshu as a great yeshuah for our bachurei yeshivos. Every bachur wants to shteig, no bachur wants to have a yeridah, especially now during this difficult period for klal Yisroel but the lack of a framework and the fact that so many of our bachurim are not in a structured environment means that a program such as this can be both a tremendous way to grow in Torah while serving as a profound yeshuah for bachurim.”

Dirshu’s hanhala member, Rabbi Avidgor Bernstein, adds, “I am certain the very geshmake limud and the fact that so many bachurim all over the world, whether it is Eretz Yisrael, America, France or England, are joining and learning the same thing, will bring a great yeshuah and make for a wonderful achdus through Torah. That itself is a wonderful thing.

Indeed, we are living in unprecedented times and it is only in the zechus haTorah that the world will be saved. That zechus rests in the hands of our wonderful bachurei yeshivos!

ur great teacher Moshe begins his final oration to the Jewish people in this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Torah portion. He reviews for them the history of his stewardship of the Jewish people over the past 40 years.

He recounts the miracles and tragedies that befell the Jewish people, from the Exodus from Egypt until

the very day that they now stand at the banks of the river Jordan preparing to enter the land of Israel. It is a very detailed oration. Apparently, all the major events and issues, the highs and lows of the sojourn of Israel in the desert of Sinai, are remembered and recounted. He spares no detail or criticism as to what went wrong, and at

the conclusion of this book, his love for the Jewish people is fully on exhibition by the manifold blessings that he bestows upon them.

Moshe mentions the heroes that arose to champion the cause of Torah and the Jewish people at moments of crisis, and he also tells us of those who fell short, i.e. how their acts of commission or omission led the Jewish people astray. He points out that heavenly guidance nurtured the Jewish people during this entire long span and assures them that the Creator will not abandon them in the future. But he also says that the Creator will hold them responsible for their behavior and their loyalty to Torah.

What is striking to me is that Moshe omits any mention regarding the construction of the Mishkan/Tabernacle from his recollection of the history of the Jewish people in Sinai. Yet, in the text of the holy Torah itself, a great deal of space and detail is devoted to this subject. All the commentators are hard-pressed to understand why many eternal commandments are merely mentioned or hinted at, while the construction of the Mishkan/Tabernacle occupies a great deal of space and detail.

Though I have not found many Torah commentaries that discuss this omission, I myself have thought about it at some length. I think that Moshe is communicating to us a subtle but vital lesson that will enable the Jewish people to survive national loss and destruction, exile and dispersion, and yet be able to rebuild itself physically and spiritually. Moshe is teaching us

that all physical structures, though they are the holiest of all human endeavors endowed with godly spirit, so to speak, they are nevertheless only temporary.

The Mishkan/Tabernacle lasted for hundreds of years in the desert and at Shilo in the land of Israel, but it eventually disappeared. The First Temple stood for 410 years but it too became only ruins. The Second Temple, which Herod rebuilt in enormous splendor and was one of the wonders of the ancient world, stood for 420 years. But it also was destroyed and disappeared. It is not the physical structure of buildings that has preserved the Jewish people until our very day. It is, rather, the Torah, its values and commandments, its worldview and systems of life that have enabled the Jewish people to survive and eventually prosper and rebuild themselves.

It is no accident that the majority of Jewish scholars follow the opinion that the third Temple will not be built by human beings, because it has to be eternal, and all human construction, no matter how grand, noble or lofty still remains only a temporary structure. Moshe, in his oration, speaks not only to his generation but to all later generations of the Jewish people. He does not dwell on physical structures which are always subject to ruin and replacement, but on the spiritual greatness of the eternal Torah that the Lord has bestowed upon the Jewish people.

Parshas Devarim/ Shabbos Chazon Tunneling to Yerushalayim

I

n Parshas Devarim, Moshe Rabbeinu begins to summarize our journey in the desert from Mitzrayim until we reach the land of Israel. He starts out by saying (Devarim 1:2), “Achad Asar Yom Meichoreiv Derech Har Se’ir Ad Kadeish barnea,” “Eleven days from Chorev [Sinai], by way of Mt. Seir until Kadesh Barnea.”

Rashi there explains “The [Jewish people] traveled [the entire eleven day journey] in three days. That is the extent to which the Divine Presence exerted itself for your sake to hasten your arrival in the land. But because you sinned, it led you around Mt. Seir for forty years.”

In other words, the eleven day journey was turned into a three day journey, which was transformed into a forty year journey. Therefore, the next Pasuk continues, “and it was in the fortieth year...”

In Eicha (3:9), we say, “Gadar D’rachei B’gazis Niseevosei Iva,” “He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone, He has made my paths crooked.” Based on this Pasuk, the Medrash in Eicha Raba (and in the Yerushalmi, Ma’aser Sheni 2:5) tells us that there were simple working Jewish men and women who lived in Tzipori, Tiveria, and even further north in Gilad, who used to travel to Yerushalayim every erev Shabbos to light candles and learn Torah in the Beis Hamikdash and then return home before Shabbos.

It was not possible in those days to make such a journey in one day, so the Medrash and Yerushalmi explain that they traveled via miraculous Michalos, tunnels. The Medrash explained, however, that these tunnels could no longer be found because “there were tunnels there, but they became concealed.” Based on this, the Medrash quotes the Pasuk in Eicha, “Gadar D’rachei B’gazis Niseevosei Iva,” - “He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone, He has made my paths crooked.”

These simple Jews had such a strong longing to be in the Beis Hamikdash in Yerushalayim that Hashem opened up a miraculous path for them in the form of those tunnels.

The Maharal in Netzach Yisroel explains this Medrash as follows, “There is a deep point in this Medrash... It is impossible to explain these tunnels under the ground at face value. It is clear that the explanation [of these tunnels] is that they represent a hidden and concealed force... until the future when the nature of this force will be revealed.”

The Yerushalmi cited above also tells the story of a man who found himself in a tunnel going the opposite direction. This man who lived in Eretz Yisroel was plowing with his ox when the ox ran away. He chased after it and followed it into a tunnel. When they came out on the other side of the tunnel, he suddenly

found himself in Bavel, Babylonian.

He asked some people he saw where he was and they told him he was in Bavel. They asked him where he was from and when he arrived. He explained that he was in Eretz Yisroel that very day and just got to Bavel.

They asked him how he got there and he tried to find the tunnel but he was unable to. The Gemara also connects this story to the Pasuk in Eicha, “Gadar D’rachei B’gazis Niseevosei Iva,” “He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone, He has made my paths crooked.”

The first story told of people who wanted to reach Yerushalayim so badly that Hashem created a miraculous path to the Beis Hamikdash for them. In the second story on the other hand, even if someone is already in Eretz Yisroel, if he spends his time chasing cows and Gashmius, physicality, those same tunnels take him into exile. We all have our “oxen” of this world that we are chasing, and just like the man in the story, we also do not know how to find our way back to Eretz Yisroel, to holiness.

The distance between exile and redemption is very great. But the physical distance is not as wide or as vast as the distance in our minds and our hearts. With great desire for Eretz Yisroel, the path to the land of Israel went from eleven days to just three days. But when we went off track and began chasing the wrong

things, that path suddenly became a forty year journey and then a two thousand year exile from which we do not know how to return. There are many political and economic obstacles to our return to the land of Israel, but the main obstacles are inside of us, in our minds and in our hearts.

Rebbi Yehuda Halevi longed for Eretz Yisroel so much that he wrote “Libi B’Mizrach V’ani B’sof Maariv,” “My heart is in the East, and I am at the end of the West.” With great longing, one can overcome all obstacles and bypass all stumbling blocks to return home. Because of his great desire, even though travel to Eretz Yisroel was extremely dangerous in those days, Rebbi Yehuda Halevi found a “tunnel,” and made his way back home.

The exile and Churban, destruction, have destroyed the paths back to Eretz Yisroel and redemption. But Chazal have revealed to us (Psikta Rabasi 32:10) that when the final redemption comes, the Aseres Hashvatim, the ten lost tribes will one day return to Eretz Yisroel from the oth-

er side of the Sambatiyon river via these tunnels to Har Hazeisim, the Mount of Olives. In addition, Chazal tell us (Kesubos 111, Yalkut Shimoni on Yeshaya 36:431) that at the time of the redemption, the tzadikim who have left the world will come to life and return to Eretz Yisroel via these same tunnels. “Micheelos Naasos

is so powerful that it can even bridge the distance between this world and the next to bring the lost tribes and the tzadikim who have left the world back to Eretz Yisroel.

Through these teachings, Chazal have revealed to us that the distance between exile and redemption and between this world and the next is

In this week’s Parsha, Moshe Rabbeinu says (Devarim 1:8, 21), “See that I have placed the land before you, come and inherit it... See that Hashem your G-d has placed the land before you, ascend and inherit it as Hashem the G-d of your fathers has spoken to you, do not be afraid and do not fear.” All that is required is not to be afraid. We did not get lost in the desert because of the other nations there, for political reasons, or any other cause. Rather, our journey turned into a forty year trip because of our mindset. Moshe explained to them (Devarim 1:26, 32), “You did not want to ascend... This is why you did not believe in Hashem your G-d.”

Shmuel Yosef (“Shai”) Agnon, the famous Nobel Prize winner and G-d fearing writer, wrote a story called “The Story of the Goat,” inspired by all of the Medrashim about the mysterious tunnels.

He tells of an old man who was very sick. His doctors told him that he needed goat’s milk, so he bought a goat. A short time after he bought the goat, she disappeared for a few days. Wherever they searched for her they could not find her. But after a few days, she returned on her own with a udder full of milk so rich and delicious that it tasted like it came from Gan Eden. Whenever the milk ran out she would disappear for a few days and could not be found until she returned on her own with an udder full of the most delicious milk. One day the man’s son formulated a plan.

He tied a rope to the goat’s tail and

when she left in the middle of the night, he felt the tug of the rope and followed her. He followed her into a tunnel, one of the Micheelos, and they walked through the tunnel for several hours, possibly several days.

When they came out on the other side, they found themselves on beautiful verdant hills with trees and plants blossoming everywhere. He saw Jews but they did not understand Yiddish. He asked them in Hebrew where he was and they explained that they were in the land of Israel, near Tzfas. He wanted to remain there for the day and then return to bring his parents to Eretz Yisroel but he saw people preparing for Shabbos and realized he would not be able to make the journey in time for Shabbos. He therefore wrote a note to his parents telling them that he was okay and in the land of Israel. They should just follow the goat and she would bring them to Eretz Yisroel to live with him.

He placed the note in the goat’s ear and allowed it to return and he went to live in Tzfas.

When the goat returned home to the Shtetl without his son, the boy’s father was broken-hearted. He did not find the note and assumed that his son had been torn apart by some wild animal. Ripped by grief, he brought the slaughterer, to kill the goat that brought him so much pain.

As they were skinning the goat after slaughter, the note fell out of its ear.

Seeing his son’s handwriting, the father read the note and realized that in his grief and haste, he had killed his only key to returning to his health, Eretz Yisroel, and to his beloved son.

The opening and pathway to redemption still exists. We do not see it or think about it, but it is there and can be unlocked if we desire to return.

Until we do, we still have Tisha B’Av. But when we believe in and long for the redemption, it is close and attainable. May we increase our desire for a world in which Hashem’s presence is revealed and merit to return through those hidden tunnels to Yerushalayim with the coming of Moshiach, may it be soon in our days.

Zev – My Friend and Chavrusa

I

met Zev the first time in Komorow. It was the summer of 1988 and it was the first year that I went to the Ronald Lauder Summer Camp on behalf of the Jews of Poland. We had very few participants during the weekdays but on weekends about twenty people joined me in studying Torah and taking part in the observance of Shabbos. Zbigniew was one of those who stayed with us during the entire two weeks. He introduced himself as Zev, which was great, since I would have had a hard time pronouncing his Polish name.

We took a liking to each other and he readily shared his life story with me.

Zev was born in 1953 to Jewish parents who married after the war.

They both survived the Holocaust and as a result vowed to conceal their Jewish ancestry and heritage. For many years Zev and his brother had no idea that they had any connection to Jews. Only in 1968, when the Polish government “encouraged” Jews

to leave the country, did his parents reveal the great secret to them. For various reasons his parents decided to remain in Poland, which left Zev stuggling with his identity. He was uncertain about who he was, since his mother (1920-2017) in order to

survive, was baptized during WWII in a Catholic orphanage run by nuns, and his father (1921-1980) lost his Jewish background escaping to the Soviet Union and joining the Red Army. Nevertheless, the knowledge that his parents had a connection to

Yiddishkeit, opened up a new chapter in his life. He connected himself to anything Jewish that still existed in Poland. The Yiddish theatre, the Jewish Historical Institute, the Nozyk Synagogue, and to the elderly Jews that chose to remain in Poland – still having serious doubts about his own Jewishness. He had no idea yet, that halachically he was Jewish. This came years later, namely in 1983, during the international commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising.

At that time, he met Rabbi Chaskel Besser z”l in Warsaw, who finally assured him that he was indeed Jewish.

In the late 70’s, Zev joined a group of younger Jews who formed a Jewish Flying University where they studied about their heritage and performed the rituals of their tradition. This group consisted mainly of intellectuals, and Zev was attracted to these individuals with whom he

had a lot in common. This group was also heavily involved in the Solidarity movement whose aim was to bring down the Communist regime.

Zev who was an academic, learned Hebrew and became engrossed in studying Jewish texts which absolutely fascinated him. This was the Zev that I met and got to appreciate in the summer of 1988.

Zev’s yearning for knowledge about his heritage was the subject of many discussions we had during that summer camp. He was bright and he was serious. I urged him to come to the United States where I could help him join a yeshiva. Since Zev had a fairly good command of the English language, my thoughts were to enroll him in a Baal Teshuva Yeshiva. Zev did not delay and on March 15, 1989, a little over six months after we met, I picked him up at JFK airport. On March 28th he joined the covenant between Hashem and the Jewish people when he had his bris where I was honored to be his Sandek. Zev lived by us for almost two months which was a wonderful opportunity for him to get fully acquainted with

day to day religious life. He observed Shabbos with us and with other émigrés from Poland and Russia, and together with our family and guests he celebrated Purim and Pesach. Zev

and undesirable elements. Zev was terrified about being in that area and we had to find a different solution. I sent him to Monsey to check out Ohr Someach, but we finally settled on Kol Yakov where he was welcomed

pressive and when he came to us for an off Shabbos, he was able to share his advancements with me.

The next phase of his life, Zev started on his own. Zev knew Julia from Poland, but at that time never thought of her in terms of marriage.

They met again in Brooklyn where she was living after she emigrated before Zev’s arrival. Julia was introduced to Pesi and me and joined us periodically for Shabbos or other occasions. Their relationship began to blossom and before long they both decided to tie the knot. After their decision to get married, we became extremely involved. We planned and made a beautiful wedding for them in 1993 inviting our family and friends. The Roshei Yeshiva and other bochurim from Kol Yakov greatly contributed to this festive simcha.

Anyone who we knew from Poland was invited and the atmosphere was charged with joy.

House. He kept that position until the national tragedy of September 11, 2001. Following that, he worked for many years as a private aide to elderly incapacitated men. Julia involved herself in the study of botany and horticulture which she loved dearly and earned a degree at Kingsborough College of Brooklyn. Zev was connected to the nearby Chabad Shul and would go there often to daven or for events like sedarim and seudos in the Sukkah. We invited them for special occasions to our home, such as Chanukah and Purim parties and we always sent them mishloach manos.

For many years we had a tradition to take them out for dinner to a restaurant which kept our relationship curren, and we would also speak by phone from time to time.

About three years ago Zev told me that his pension income barely covered his expenses. We started talking about the possibility of moving to a place where housing costs would be less. I was Baruch Hashem

Hershel Lieber has been involved in kiruv activities for over 30 years. As a founding member of the Vaad L’Hatzolas Nidchei Yisroel he has traveled with his wife, Pesi, to the Soviet Union during the harsh years of the Communist regimes to advance Yiddishkeit. He has spearheaded a yeshiva in the city of Kishinev that had 12 successful years with many students making Torah their way of life. In Poland, he lectured in the summers at the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation camp for nearly 30 years. He still travels to Warsaw every year – since 1979 – to be the chazzan for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur for the Jews there.

Together with Pesi, he organized and led trips to Europe on behalf of Gateways and Aish Hatorah for college students finding their paths to Jewish identity. His passion for travel has taken them to many interesting places and afforded them unique experiences. Their open home gave them opportunities to meet and develop relationships with a variety of people. Hershel’s column will appear in The Jewish Home on a bi-weekly basis.

Tulip Wines: A Noble Blend

s a major in the IDF, Ro’i (pronounced Ro-ee) Yitzchaki approached his senior officers with a proposal to take the soldiers under his command to do community work. His idea was initially rejected on the grounds that civilians volunteer to the army and not visa versa.

This didn’t faze him. He exudes a determination characteristic of someone who, upon encountering a wall, doesn’t veer left or right, but plows right ahead.

“I told my commanding officer that as acting father, mother and social worker to my soldiers everything about them, including their values, was my concern.”

Permission granted, Ro’i and his soldiers went out to work in civilian projects once every three months.

It was a life changing lesson that still serves him well today as the founder and CEO of Tulip wines, a boutique winery in the Jezreel Valley. Tulip is unique for more than its wines. It incorporates the production of quality wines with the employment of individuals with special needs living on Kfar Tikvah where the winery is located.

After his military service, and with encouragement from his family, he decided to go into business, while still learning economics and business administration in Tel Aviv.

He came across a wine tasting event in 2003. Delighted by the range of wines he asked his wine loving fami-

ly why they hadn’t tried making their own. They encouraged him to try it.

Having no idea where to start, he visited several wineries throughout the country, the last being the Margalit winery in the Shomron. The owner, Yair Margalit has a PhD in wine making. Ro’i asked him to be his adviser. Yair’s response was succinct and quite unexpected. He told Ro’i he was too young to start a winery, that he didn’t understand wine, and that he’d lose all his money.

Ro’i’s response was typical. “It was because of what he said that I decided to start the winery,” he remarks without a hint of humor.

He set himself a number of goals.

His first decision was to settle for nothing less than a top-quality product. Secondly, he wanted to make different wines, like his White Tulip, which has a previously untried blend

of Gewurtztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Thirdly, he wanted to create a business that would give back to the community. Keeping this in mind he met with Moshe Gross, the director of Kfar Tikvah. He told Moshe he wanted to start his winery in the village itself.

Moshe’s reaction was to welcome him with a hug. Ro’i began in a small room of 50 square meters. In the first year he made 500 cases of Cabernet and Merlot hawking his wares to restaurants and wine shops in Tel Aviv.

After a year Ro’i built the current winery at the edge of the village. Today Tulip produces over 25,000 cases of wine annually and exports to 12 countries.

Tulip’s vineyards are in the north of Israel, where the climate is more suitable than the central plain. The

annual harvest lasts from August through October. The grapes are brought to the winery where they begin the slow transformation into wine. The wine can sit in oak barrels anywhere from six months to two years.

“Wine needs to be treated like a baby,” says Ro’i. “It doesn’t speak, so you have to feel its needs. From pruning to harvesting through fermentation, there is just so much that can go wrong.”

He describes the winery’s worst year in 2015, when the country suffered three consecutive heat waves.

As a result the vineyards were covered in dust, which effected the photosynthesis of the grapevines.

A visit to the winery is nothing short of uplifting, completely defying one’s expectations. Ro’i’s small staff includes an office worker, the head chemist, winery workers and a manager. But in the middle of it all are six individuals with special needs who work alongside them.

Like every unique business method, the experiment of employing the village crew has its challenges. Besides for these challenges, COVID-19 has seen over a 30% reduction in sales both in Israel and abroad. Despite it all, the situation hasn’t dampened Ro’i’s optimistic enthusiasm.

He has also kept up his generous ways. Before Pesach he distributed 1,200 bottles of wine to the staff of a hospital in Kfar Sava.

Ro’i is dedicated to continue building Tulip for a long time to come. In the middle of the hot Israeli summer, Ro’i leased 45,000 square meters of land in Tel Farhi in Ramat HaGolan. It will be at least five years before he sees a return on his investment, but Ro’i isn’t worried. He insists Tulip is going to survive regardless of how long the pandemic lasts.

he artists of the Holocaust era had a story to tell. Though much has been lost, the remaining art is a testimony to the lives they lived and the horrors they encountered. Liz Elsby is determined to share their stories and preserve their legacies. Elsby is an artist, educator and tour guide at Yad Vashem the World Holocaust Remembrance Center Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, Israel. Elsby has been working at the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem (ISHS), since 2006. ISHS provides Holocaust education to diverse audiences from Israel and across the world, including training for educators to teach the Holocaust. It is the only school of its kind, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach of educating through art, music, literature, theology and drama.

“I was always really fascinated by the Holocaust,” shares Elsby. “My dad’s whole family came from Grodno, Poland and from Riga. Almost all of them were murdered either in Treblinka or Auschwitz…so that was always kind of there in the background. It’s not something my dad felt comfortable talking about, but I was always fascinated by the subject.”

Born in New York, Elsby and her family moved to Texas when she was 12. Illustrating and painting since she was a little girl, she was a National Scholar in the Arts and attended an art high school in Houston. She received a full scholarship and attend-

ed university for a year and a half in Philadelphia. Discontented with Jewish life in Philadelphia and Houston in early 1980’s, Elsby decided to join a Kibbutz Ulpan in Israel for six months. She made Aliyah to Israel in April 1984.

“That ‘six months’ turned into 36 years -- I’ve been here ever since. I was a little Jewish kid from Long Island when we moved to Houston and I was the only Jewish kid in the class.

I felt very disconnected. My family was very Zionistic and I always kind of dreamed of going to Israel.”

That as an artist you could still create art under such terrible circumstances and that the art wouldn’t only be what people think it would be – kitschy images of barbed wire and yellow stars – that people could go beyond that and find a place inside themselves. I became fascinated by Holocaust art and got into it more and more. I was very grateful that I had a platform at Yad Vashem.”

“Holocaust” art refers to the art created during the period of 19331948, from the year the Nazis came to power until three years after the war ended in 1945. Yad Vashem houses the world’s largest and most comprehensive Holocaust-era related collections, with a few smaller collections housed at other museums. Between ten and eleven thousand pieces of art survived, and Elsby explains that it is a mere fraction of what was created over those years, with most being lost or destroyed. Some artwork was entrusted to friends or hidden, but most was never retrieved, and many pieces were confiscated and destroyed by the Nazis as Jewish art. Much of the surviving Holocaust art comes from Theresienstadt.

Though her family originated from Poland, Elsby became very focused on Czech Jewry and Theresienstadt. Before her parents passed away last summer, Elsby would meet them yearly in Prague to visit the city and study Jewish life and the art of Terezin.

Theresienstadt/Terezin was a camp 30 miles north of Prague in the Czech Republic. Considered the “better“ ghetto, Theresienstadt was a hybrid concentration camp, transit camp and ghetto established by the Nazis during World War II in the fortress town Terezín, located in a German-occupied region of Czechoslovakia. It was named after Empress Maria Theresa who expelled the Jews from Prague during her rule in the 18th century.

and musicians, some of whom had achieved international renown, and many of these contributed to the camp’s cultural life. Many Nazi propaganda films were made at Terezin.

Jewish artists were forced to create artwork for the Nazis, and many Jewish artists fought back by creating their own artwork. Some of the art served to document reality, while some served as a means to find temporary refuge.

“For me, a piece of artwork that someone left behind who was murdered is almost like their tombstone,” says Elsby. “There’s nothing left of those people. Most of them didn’t leave anything written about themselves and some we don’t even know their name, but they left this beautiful piece of art or some kind of expression behind and that’s a monument to the fact that they lived. The more I talk about them, the more I give them symbolic life again. That’s why I do it.”

By 2013 Elsby decided to focus on the educational aspects of art and keep her own art more recreational and personal. Personally Elsby loves illustration, children’s illustration in particular, and is currently working on illustrating a book about a little girl in pre-war Krakow. She aims to portray Jewish life and show that the Jews had their own lives and identities just like any of us, not only through the lens of history and the Holocaust.

Elsby lives with her family in Kiryat Yovel, Jerusalem, not far from Yad Vashem. Elsby’s passion for the arts runs in the family. “My dad was very artistic even though he never really pursued it. Dad was in love with opera and classical music. Both of my

Her days are typically immersed in Holocaust education, filled with guiding in the museum, giving seminars usually about art and Theresienstadt. Elsby leads tours to Poland and Auschwitz and attempts to show visitors Jewish life before the war she has gone 23 times to date. Several times a year she is sent by Yad Vashem to visit cities across the US to teach about antisemitism and Holo-

ture to The Marion and Aaron Gural JCC of Cedarhurst. In introducing the lesson on “Art in The Shoah”, Elsby explains Holocaust artists were regular artists caught in the wheels of history, and likens the art of the Holocaust period to “the gravestone for those who don’t have a grave.”

There’s nothing left of those people. Most of them didn’t leave anything written about themselves and some we don’t even know their name, but they left this beautiful piece of art or some kind of expression behind and that’s a monument to the fact that they lived. The more I talk about them, the more I give them symbolic life again. caust education. She also works with “Echoes and Reflections”, an educational organization which would send her to the States to teach teachers, both Jewish and non-Jewish, about the Holocaust and how to teach it accurately and correctly. Elsby had recently taken on some of the social media responsibilities for the International School as well. These busy days are much quieter now with Yad Vashem temporarily closed to visitors and many of her other teaching and touring duties cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She relishes every opportunity to teach, even virtually. Elsby, who spent part of her childhood in the Five Towns of Long Island, New York, recently presented an online Zoom lec-

to power when Nussbaum went into hiding. “The Refugee” is Nussbaum’s 1939 painting depicting imagery of a wandering Jew in despair. Another evocative work several years later is Nussbaum’s “Self Portrait with Jewish Identity Card” (1943). This work is a dark and haunting self-portrait surrounded by smoke and shadows.

Far off in the distance Nussbaum places a small blooming tree, possibly representing a glimmer of hope that he still may have been holding on to. Nussbaum was found and sent to Auschwitz and murdered in 1944.

Another notable artist was Ilka Gedo (May 26, 1921 – June 19, 1985).

Gedo was a talented Hungarian painter and graphic artist. One early work was a self-portrait, faded and

with darkness over her eyes, though she was only in her early twenties at the time. Elsby shares the story that Gedo’s name was called for deportation from a group of Jews staying together in a home in the Budapest ghetto, when an older man steps up and takes her place. This selfless unknown rabbi was a remarkable example of the Jews who saved other Jews.

Gedo’s later work was a portrait with no head and with twisted hands; perhaps an expression of survivor’s guilt.

Gedo doesn’t paint again for 20 years.

When she resumes in the 1960’s, her art is all in the abstract style.

Elsby explains how art served as a testimony, and was especially valuable at times when several artists portrayed the same scene. Some of the art from Terezin bears witness to the horrors of the life of the ghetto, for example five artists who depicted the arrival of 1091 kids from Bialystok that were sent to Auschwitz a month later. Another illustrated incident was that of a public hanging in 1942.

Leo Haas was one artist who depicted the punishment of young men arrested for writing letters home to their parents in his drawing “The Hanging of a Ghetto Inmate”.

In places like Terezin, the artists that were forced to work for the Nazis would steal supplies and make secret art at the risk of their lives. Elsby tells of a July 1944 incident. “Four of the artists were caught for creating what the Nazis called “horror propaganda”, in other words, artwork showing the horrors of the ghetto. The group, including an art dealer and an architect, were arrested and sent to prison in a concentration camp called “The Little Fortress”. Only one of the artists survived the war.”

The horrific conditions in concentration camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau made it virtually impossible to create art in the other camps. There were some artists, however, who had been selected by their talent to work for the Nazis. Halina Olomucki was taken and forced to work, stenciling wallpaper by hand and making signs. Olomucki would steal paper and pencil and draw the women in her barracks at night. Knowing most of them wouldn’t survive, the women would beg her to draw them so that there would be some memory of them left behind. Olomucki was one of the very few Jewish artists who were able to create art in the extermination camps.

Much of the Holocaust art that was recovered was hidden in the ghettos. The Warsaw Ghetto in particular had a treasure trove hidden under the ghetto as depicted in Who Will Write Our History?, a 2018 film executive produced by Nancy Spielberg and based on a book by Samuel Kassow. The book chronicles the val-

iant initiative of Dr. Emanuel Ringelblum and the secret archive he created and curated in the Warsaw Ghetto under the codename “Oneg Shabbat”, or Oyneg Shabes in Yiddish.

More than thirty-thousand pieces of documentation was hidden by this group in their quest to leave evidence of their lives and experiences – artwork, interviews, essays and letters – all hidden under the city of Warsaw.

were murdered, many of the documents and art survived.

“This group of people knew that something terrible was going to happen in the ghetto. They wanted their voice to be the voice that would tell the story of the Jews, and not the voice of the Nazis. The Nazis showed Jews as rats in the sewers; they wanted the actual voice of the people so they went on this initiative to collect documentation. It’s an amazing story.”

Elsby remarks how the art had to come out of the artist even under unsafe and very limiting circumstances.

“It’s an amazing testament to the human spirit that you can’t squash that expression – they still created. What I also think is amazing is that one of the things the Nazis said is that Jews bring no beauty into the world, they only bring ugliness and they don’t create -- and every single piece of artwork is like a slap in the face of that Nazi ideology. Every piece of artwork brings some kind of beauty, brings something new into the world – that’s if they’re making art or making music or writing poetry or teaching kids-that’s all ways of bringing something positive into the world against everything the Nazis said. It’s a real act of resistance.”

Most communities didn’t have the ability to have an uprising like in Warsaw and there were about 100 uprisings in Nazi occupied Poland and most were doomed for failure from the start. Elsby views the art as a means of fighting back – both as a form of survival and rebellion.

Elsby is concerned for the education of the younger generations who won’t be growing up with Holocaust survivors. “You have to tell the story through the first person narrative;

it has to be the human story and art is such a human expression. Writers write, diarists write diaries and artists tell their stories through their artwork -- that’s their witness and that’s how they become an individual. So artwork really shows us that these were individual human beings and I think that’s the most important way to remember the Holocaust, not only through numbers and statistics …who were they and what were the individual stories? It makes it much more relevant for younger people.”

Elsby feels a loss of not being able to educate now, with Yad Vashem closed to visitors and most of her regular educational programing on hiatus. Two of her trips, a March of the Living tour and United Synagogue Youth trip kids to Prague, Berlin and Poland, were unfortunately cancelled for 2020.

“I think it’s really important to talk about because I think now, with all these things happening, this whole story is kind of getting lost -and we’re not going to have survivors soon. Everyone is so wrapped up with everything else happening in the world that it’s really the time to stand up now and remember these people and make sure their stories are told.

We owe it to them; they won’t be here to tell their own stories soon.”

“The ignorance is so astonishing with all of the terrible things coming out now – we have to be vigilant,” cautions Elsby. “We have to teach young people they’re our hope for the future, and I think to teach them to be able to relate to this is through the stories of individuals.”

One can look to the Diary of Anne Frank to see how much impact came through telling of the human story, and how her story helped masses of people understand history on a more personal level. In a modern age where images hold so much value, art can certainly play a tremendous role in bringing the history and the horrors to light.

What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters

Dear Navidaters,

I saw a great guy at my friend’s wedding last month who I am interested in dating. He was helping out the chosson and the family with different things and the bottom line is I’m very impressed. The issue is that I asked my friend to suggest it and she is not getting back to me. She just got married, I get it. But at the same time, it just seems so selfish that married friends seem to ditch their single friends as soon as they get married - you would think they’d be even more passionate to want to help. I have texted and called her but still no response. She knows it is about this shidduch because I could tell she has seen my text message, which was detailed, but she has yet to respond.

My questions to the panelists are: 1. How can I go about being suggested to this guy without sounding like a stalker?

2. Generally, why aren’t young marrieds more sensitive to their single friends?

The Panel The Rebbetzin Rebbetzin Faigie Horowitz, M.S. liana, save yourself frustration, wonder and brain space. Stop worrying about why your friend is not in touch with you on this matter. It could be that something has come up in her life since her wedding. It could be that she knows something about this fellow from her husband that she was asked not to disclose. There are a number of things that are possible besides the obvious one that she is caught up in her new life and is focused on that right now.

Focus your own energy on getting someone else to suggest the shidduch. Make some inquiries through his social circle and try to identify someone who knows him whom you can approach. Go about it that way and leave your friend out. You have time to call the newlywed couple and check if there is something you need to know if the dating continues.

Be your own woman and go for it.

Don’t generalize about your newlywed friends beyond the obvious. Move on and at the same time, think through why you can’t give the new couple the benefit of the doubt and why you can’t take the initiative on your own.

Could you be lacking understanding and maturity? Could you be dependent on others?

That is basically what you are doing.

I remember when my husband started Medical School the Dean spoke at the White Coat Ceremony. He described to the students’ friends and families in attendance in the most illustrative terms, “Trying

to keep up in medical school is like drinking water from a fire hydrant.”

The same is true for shana rishona.

I remember the day after sheva brachos like it was just yesterday. After seeing my husband off, lunch in hand, to his yeshiva carpool, I took our one car to work. On the way home I stopped at the grocery store to buy all the ingredients for my planned dinner. This wasn’t just any dinner.

I was going to make spaghetti and meatballs; not the type I make today that consists of onion and garlic powder, an egg, some breadcrumbs, chop meat and a jar of tomato sauce. No. This was far from that. This recipe from an exclusive new cookbook had red wine, minced fresh garlic, turmeric and my own tomato sauce made from a can of paste, extra virgin olive oil and a host of rare and exotic ingredients. The recipe actually called for blending onions in a blender. Who even does that? Apparently me, a new blissful bride wanting to impress her new husband. Of course, the recipe insisted that I buy kale before it was a thing, and when the spaghetti and meatballs were ready, I was to prepare a fresh spinach/kale salad on the side. It was going to be epic, that is; until it wasn’t.

As I finished making the meatballs and started making the tomato sauce I had attempted to push the empty tomato paste can into the garbage and that is when it all went downhill. There was blood everywhere. In my mind, my finger was hanging by a thread, after it had been sliced by the top of the can. I called my husband panicking. It was 6 PM and he was still in yeshiva, “You have to come home” I said, “I chopped my finger half-off!” “I’ll get a ride home, wrap it in tissues and keep pressure on it. I’ll be right home!” He said.

“My savior!” I thought. “Not even a doctor yet and he knows exactly what to do.” I felt lucky as I waited for his ride to bring him home. We then, like newlyweds horseback rid-

ing into the sunset, drove together to the emergency room. We waited for literally hours before being brought to a room, where we waited a few more hours. Apparently, a bleeding finger is not considered an emergency at Sinai Hospital ER of Baltimore. We were pinned as low priority as it gets.

Because, alas, as I was only to find out later, my finger was not broken but just had a minor cut. A kid with a cold was a higher priority than us. We sat in the waiting room. We laughed, I cried, we enjoyed just being together, we took selfies before it was a thing, and no - as far as I remember - we did not bother to call anyone. When we were finally brought back and seen, the resident physician put on a single steri-strip and sent us on our way with kind congratulations on our

you shidduchim, even if you found your bashert at their wedding. There are so many reasons she has not gotten back to you. Perhaps they are traveling somewhere exotic where there is spotty reception? Perhaps they are figuring out a stressful circumstance? Perhaps they are in the emergency room with a cut from making extravagant spaghetti and meatballs?

To answer your first question, as it seems this boy had a lot to do with your friend’s family, simply find out his name and pursue the avenue a different way. Ask your friend’s mother what his name is, and if she is not too busy with post-wedding details, ask her to suggest the shidduch. If she is not available to do so, call and ask a local shadchan to suggest it.

To answer your second question, as to why newly married couples don’t set up shidduchim enough, I have a

lot to say. To make a long story short: newlyweds should not be focusing on shidduchim. People think it’s no big deal to set someone up but the time, energy, and focus that it entails is way too much for most shana rishona couples to handle. Right now, they should be in their own world. If they seem to find the time, they can surely help, host mixed meals, and make introductions, but you cannot depend on them. They need at least a year to develop a routine together to be able to start looking outwards. Until then, the couple must solely work on their own new and beautiful relationship, and you as a good friend will respect that.

pass today’s convoluted and problematic shidduch process. More young people should follow your example.

What should be an exciting and romantic time in a young person’s life, has been artificially distorted into a stressful and traumatic experience.

Second, my simple, practical suggestion is for you to call the bride’s mother and ask for her assistance.

Request that she contact the young man on your behalf. Perhaps your newly married friend is simply too pre-occupied to respond right now, so don’t judge her harshly.

Third, I’m sorry to point this out, but, it is very possible that your friend’s non-response could be her polite, non-confrontational way of telling you that the young man is simply not interested in dating you.

But, don’t assume that this is true.

You should certainly follow up and call your friend’s mother.

Good luck, and remember, when you get married (B’EH): don’t forget your single friends!

is your dear friend! In a more just or sensitive world, maybe your friend would call you back. I think it would be the right thing to do.

Shana rishona, however, is a time when couples need to be focused on their newfound coupledom. As the other panelists explained, this is very normal and within reason, to be expected. With regard to your friendship, try to let this one slide.

Now is not the time to confront your friend with your feelings. If this behavior becomes a pattern over time

with her outright ignoring you, you will reassess your friendship then. But try not to mentally “go there” as she just got married. I hope she is in marital bliss. In my experience, couples begin to emerge from this “honeymoon” phase at around the one year mark and re-establish themselves with friends and family as a couple. They are working on their very identity as a couple right now (whether they realize it or not.) Often times, friends of the newlywed will feel a bit discarded and while this can be very sad and downright devastating for the friend, these feelings are kind of normal and expected as well. If you’re feeling in any kind of way, surround yourself with family and friends who are in a position to be fully present for you.

I encourage you to Pursue other avenues to be set up with this young man. I’m sure there are at least a handful of people that you know who

have a tie to him, considering you were at the same wedding. May you find your bashert very soon, and may you maintain your sensitivity toward setting up your single friends. It really is so important!

ena, I must tell you how shocked I was to read, “...if it drives you nuts when girls do not use proper grammar or spelling in their resumes, then toss all the ones with those errors in the garbage.” Had it been a work/job resume, I would fully agree. But we are talking about A POTENTIAL WIFE! A woman who uses faulty grammar or misspells could be the greatest partner in the world. There is absolutely no reason to dismiss someone for that reason. I think you owe your readers an apology for stating that.

You are giving the wrong impression of Torah-true shidduchim. And, by the way, I am a total stickler for good grammar and proper spelling.

Hi, Thank you for writing in, especially because you disagree with what I wrote. Disagreement brings up real conversation, which ultimately sparks growth. You bring up some valid points. Generally speaking, we ought to give people the benefit of the doubt and avoid jumping to conclusions when we see something questionable.

We are nuanced individuals who are a culmination of life experiences and it is not right to judge any individual based on one element of their presentation (personality, look, speech, etc). We have a duty to understand any underlying piece of a person before judging them. Kudos to you for striving for that within the context of grammar on resumes.

With that being said, as we do with Torah and halacha, let’s tailor our response to the person asking the question. Moshe’s question specifically stated that he felt overwhelmed with the amount of resumes he received and how similar each girl

appeared through her resume and how she was described. He asked for advice on how to deal with the massive amounts of resumes and avoid further burnout. After all, Moshe is looking for A POTENTIAL WIFE! In doing so, he should ensure that he is only going out with women who are actually eligible partners for him. My advice to him was to figure out exactly what he needs in a spouse and to find ways to screen for those things via her resume and speaking with references.

You should know that the example I used was actually from a man who has spent years dating and has found himself in the exact same position as Moshe. I reached out to him to hear more about his thoughts on the matter and this is what he said: “A woman who doesn’t know basic grammar or doesn’t even care enough to have her resume proofread by someone who does may have the potential to be a wonderful wife and mother, but there is no way she would be the greatest partner in the world for me. Being the greatest partner entails being on a comparable intellectual level and having similar personal values, and I have found from years of dating that I have never had good chemistry with girls that have these subpar resumes. If bad grammar drives me nuts, then it’s going to drive me nuts every time she sends me a text and will make it hard for me to respect her. That type of girl may be a wonderful wife, but for someone else.

If I had fewer options, maybe I would not be so selective. But, when you receive your fair share of resumes and need to filter them somehow, I think this is a perfectly legitimate way.”

I could not agree with this sentiment more, especially the last part. If a person is receiving an overwhelming amount of resumes, then he needs to put a system in place to filter through them based on his needs.

For the guy I asked that includes poor grammar and the underlying issues that come with it. It would

be irresponsible of him to look into and go out with girls who have poor grammar on their resumes after he knows that it does not work for him.

It is simply a mechanism to filter out character traits that do not work for a person.

Throughout my time in shidduchim, I have always equated the process to looking for a job. In both cases, you are networking with recruiters and using a resume, references, and interviews to fill a position. While the holiness and beauty is so different between filling the position of an accountant and a wife, the basic structure of both systems is pretty similar.

I would caution you to be conscious of this and understand that first impressions and reputations are vital down

to that period at the end of a sentence.

Within the confines of our system, for better or worse, reputation starts on a piece of paper and everyone is well aware of that. If a girl decides to dismiss that concept, then that is on her and she will have to face the consequences of certain guys saying no.

At the end of the day, it is all up to Hashem. If He wants two people to be together, then they will be regardless of the grammar on her resume; however, we have an achrayus to do our proper hishtadlus.

The Blessing of Uncertainty

Uncertainty - noun 1. The state of being uncertain 2. Something that is uncertain or causes one to feel uncertain

U

ncertainty is part of life and it most certainly sums up the last five months of life in this world. Covid-19 barreled into our lives, turning almost everything upside down and inside out. Many people were ill and too many passed away. Some people are still recuperating from weeks of being ventilated.

No one envisioned a world in which people work from home, Zoom learning at all ages prevails, and shuls were closed. Simchas have been significantly curtailed: many don’t know the venue until a few days prior to the big day. Who would have ever thought that the only consistently functioning Minyan in the world saying Kaddish and naming babies for over two months would be comprised of octogenarians and septuagenarians living in Sandringham Gardens in far-away Johannesburg, South Africa?

Here we are more than midway through July and there is some semblance of normalcy as we once knew it. Many shuls and camps are open this summer. Many people have returned to shopping in stores (albeit unfortunately, without too many masks in sight).

It appears as though our children will be able to be in Israel for Elul Zman and the next academic year.

The historic news that approximately 180 religious institutions spanning the spectrum of Judaism have pulled together so over 12,000 young Jewish men and women can attend yeshivas, seminaries and other programs is cause for joy. Yet the resurgence of Covid-19 in Israel has led to reinstituting many restrictions in order to contain its spread.

Uncertainty prevails.

We usher in the month of Av this week, which means that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur follow in about 60 days. Simultaneously, we are witnessing Covid-19 spikes and numbers that were heretofore impossible to contemplate. Shuls are

packed during the Yamim Nora’im: will we be in shul as we know it for this coming Yom Tov season? I, for one, would like to be.

Yet uncertainty prevails.

Schools. We are approximately 6 weeks away from the beginning of the school year, a time of hope and renewal for many people. Many colleges and universities have announced classes on line. I have not figured out how students in medicine, dentistry and allied medical professions will manage with virtual dissections: will their lack of handson learning and patient care have an effect on their future competence?

Our elementary, junior high and high schools have formed Reopening Committees comprised of different professionals to effect proper school openings. The problem is that the constant state of flux of information and misinformation makes it beyond impossible to formulate a stable reopening in which every person’s health is guaranteed.

Uncertainty prevails.

Couple all this with a rapidly

changing and evolving geo-political landscape that includes a United States presidential election in November.

Uncertainty prevails. Actually, it’s rampant.

In my own world, the phone rings daily and emails arrive with questions of uncertainty.

• “My parents have antibodies and they are begging us to come for Shabbos with our three small kids. We don’t have antibodies and our kids are in day camp.

Can we go? Oh – My 83-year old grandmother wants to come, too.”

• “We are making a Bris. Baruch Hashem, there are two complete sets of grandparents and several great-grandparents. Several live out of state. We’d like to get the family together. We are talking about perhaps 100 people. We prefer indoors during the heat and humidity.”

• “My 18-month old has a cold with a runny nose. My other children’s camps insist that we sign a daily form that the campers have not

been exposed to any one sick or who has a cold. What we should we do?”

Uncertainty on steroids.

So how is one to proceed in a world swarming with uncertainty?

Interestingly, uncertainty can be a positive thing. It can motivate us to action and lead to innovations.

We can still thrive during these trying times.

As a positive, uncertainty can get a bad name when in reality, it can be a positive thing. Uncertainty can motivate us to action and lead to innovations. We can thrive during these trying times as they push ourbuttons, causing us to (choose to) develop news “muscles” and skills.

The creative process will evolve into almost all aspects of life. Think of the classroom. The desks we once knew will become part of the time capsule called “Life B.C. – Before Covid.” New desks are emerging. Some schools are installing

desks with plastic shields so every child is socially distanced. Perhaps health-compromised teachers can teach remotely, and teachers-in-training or teacher–wannabes can circulate classrooms, making sure children are absorbing and applying what the “seasoned” teacher is teaching.

Cheese Banh Mi Sandwich

ith the 9 Days upon us, we are all seeking more dairy options. In my opinion, this sandwich is the one of the most amazing cheese sandwiches you’ll ever eat.

This sandwich is adapted from the Vietnamese Banh Mi Sandwich and is loaded with tons of flavor.

Yields 4 servings Ingredients 3- 4 slices sliced cheese of your choice, (Havarti, Munster, sharp Cheddar) 1 baguette, cut into 4 pieces, sliced in half lengthwise Pickled Vegetables: see below Cilantro, optional Green chilies, such as jalapeño Curry Lime Mayo: see below

Preparation To assemble, spread bottom half of baguette with a nice amount of Curry Lime Mayonnaise.

Add a layer of sliced cheese and top with pickled vegetables. You can also add cilantro, and, for a hotter flavor add sliced fresh green chilies. Top with baguette tops.

½ cup water 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or honey ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Pickled Vegetables Pareve Yields 8 servings 2 carrots, sliced 1 bunch radishes, sliced 1 daikon radish, sliced Pickling liquid ½ cup white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar

Preparation Combine all pickling liquid ingredients in a small pot. Bring to a boil.

Place vegetables into large jars, each vegetable in its own jar. Pour boiling pickling liquid over them and cover completely.

You can serve them as “quick pickles” after 30

minutes, or store in the fridge for a few days.

Preparation In a bowl, whisk all ingredients together; set aside.

Crunchy Honey Mustard Salmon

love crunch in my food. For me, that means soup nuts in my soup, croutons in my salad, and veggie sticks on my fish. I make this recipe fresh on weeknights and it goes straight from oven to table. My family gobbles it up - not a veggie sticks left!

Ingredients 2 pound side salmon fillet 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 2 teaspoon soy sauce 1 teaspoons olive oil 1 tablespoon honey 3 cubes frozen garlic 1 cup Heaven and Earth Veggie sticks

Preparation Pre heat oven to 350.

Place side of salmon on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

In a small bowl mix first 5 ingredients together and pour over salmon.

Press the veggie sticks on top of the sauce so they stick.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until cooked through.

Maybe Trump Shouldn’t Save the Democrat-Run Cities Besieged

A

s protests continue to spin out of control in Portland, Ore., President Donald Trump said last week that Democrat-run cities have become “like war zones” and that his administration will soon announce measures to restore order. For those alarmed at this prospect, the alternative is to let the cities burn.

Trump is right when he says that as “far-left mayors are escalating the anti-cop crusade . . . violent crime is spiraling in their cities.” In New York City, shootings during one week in June were up 358% over the previous year, while the number of police retirements has skyrocketed 411% -- a vote of no confidence in the city’s left-wing leadership. In Atlanta, murders are up 86%. In Minneapolis, shootings are up 47%. In Philadelphia, shootings involving children are up 43%, and 96% of the victims are black. In Chicago, 106 people were shot during a single weekend in June, 14 of them fatally, while this past weekend, 64 people were shot, and 11 died. All these cities are run by Democrats.

Then there is the spineless response of these local Democratic leaders to violent protests in their cities.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan called the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest, which took over several city blocks and a park, a “block party” and compared it to the “summer of love” -- only to see multiple assaults and two murders take place in the police-free zone she permitted to exist for nearly a month.

In Portland, Ore. -- a hotbed of antifa violence -- mayhem has raged for nearly two months as violent protesters have set more than 100 fires, looted business and done millions of dollars in property damage to local businesses. Rioters have attacked police with rocks, glass bottles, soup cans, frozen

water bottles, bricks and fireworks, according to court documents filed by police. The mayor seems unable or unwilling to quell the violence.

Trump declared that enough is enough and that he and Attorney General William Barr will soon unveil a plan to “to straighten things out.”

But maybe he shouldn’t. The genius of

There is an argument for just letting those experiments play out. After all, we are told elections have consequences. Well, the people in those cities voted for weak Democratic mayors and city council members. Maybe if they experience the consequences of

Or they can move. As Milton Friedman explained in “Capitalism and Freedom,” the beauty of our system of dispersed power is that, “if I do not like what my local community does…

I can move to another local community… If I do not like what my state does,

I can move to another. But if I do not like what Washington imposes, I have few alternatives in this world of jealous nations.” In recent years, growing numbers of Americans quit high-tax blue states such as California for lowtax red states like Texas. If disastrous fiscal policies can spark this kind of migration, maybe disastrous policing policies will do the same.

Of course, the counterargument is: What about the people in Portland, Seattle and other cities where violence is out of hand who did not vote for feckless Democrats? Why should they be subjected to violence? Moreover, although wealthier residents may be able to pick up and leave, the poorer citizens of these cities who depend on social assistance and public housing don’t have the resources to do so. And what about small business owners who have poured their life savings into enterprises that have been looted and vandalized? If they pick up and leave, they lose everything.

It’s unfair to leave these Americans defenseless. And it’s arguably the president’s responsibility to do something about it. (c) 2020, Washington Post Writers Group

The Jews who Dropped the A-Bomb

he most destructive bombs ever used in combat were the two atomic bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima

and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th, 1945. A few days later, Japan agreed to an unconditional surrender and many historians believe that with-

out the bombs the war would have continued on for months with untold casualties. The creation of the bombs and the Jewish scientists who were instrumental in the Manhattan Project are well documented. However, it was the men of the 20th Air Force and the 509th Composite Group (CG) that actually planned the raids and dropped the bombs. Many Jewish

The plane of choice was the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. The heavy bomber had four engines, cabin pressurization and most importantly, for the atomic bomb missions, had a range of over 3,000 miles. Sixty Five B-29s of the Silverplate series were designed for these missions and Lt. Col. Paul Tibbets handpicked

Trinity Site in New Mexico and the bombs were sent to the B-29 base on Tinian in the pacific. A plane named the Enola Gay, piloted by Tibbets, dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and the Boxcar, piloted by Major Charles Sweeney, dropped the bomb on Nagasaki.

cans were preparing for an attack on Japan itself when the decision was made to drop the bombs and shortly thereafter the war was over. Many of the Manhattan Project scientists were appalled that their creation was used on civilian targets which led Jewish physicist Leo Szilard to write an article entitled “President Truman Didn’t Understand.”

The planes were saved from the scrap heap with the Enola Gay on display at the Smithsonian outside Washington and the restored Bockscar can be viewed at the U.S. Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. The men, including the three Jewish officers depicted in this article, who flew the missions were the best B-29 crews in the Army Air Corps and are remembered 75 years after the bombs were dropped for their part in ending World War II.

Operator Sergeant Abe Spitzer studied at Johns Hopkins to become a mechanical engineer but left college to join the Army Air Corps. He was sent to work on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

He served as the officer in charge of radar maintenance with the 509th Composite Group throughout the group’s training period. During the Atom Bomb missions he was the radar counter-measure observer and was tasked with making sure the bombs didn’t explode too early. He was to make sure the Japanese “did not jam the bomb’s fuse frequencies and prematurely detonate the Fat Man” (the name given to the bomb that was sent on the Nagasaki mission). He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions while on this most famous mission. Decades later Beser visited Hiroshima where survivors of the bomb put his mind at rest by expressing their understanding that the fighters were doing their duty.

Also on board the Bockscar for the Nagasaki mission on August 9th was radio operator Sergeant Abe Spitzer from the Bronx. He also flew on the Great Artsie for the Hiroshima mission on August 6th. He said of the destructive power of the bomb, “Below us, spread out almost as far as I could see, was a great fire, but it was like no ordinary fire. It contained a dozen colors, all of them blindingly bright, more colors than

The purple light was changing to a green-blue now, with just a tinge of yellow at the edges, and from below the ball of fire, the upside down sun, seemed to be following the smoke upward, racing to us with immeasurably fast speed - although, we at the same time, though not so quickly - were speeding away from what was left of the city.”

Two other B-29 Superfortresses flew as escorts on both missions.

First Lieutenant Charles Levy was the bombardier for the Great Artsie on the Nagasaki mission. While on the August 9th mission he was the photographer and took the famous photo of the mushroom cloud over the city. He was originally supposed to fly on the Bockscar but the crews were switched because of a complication stemming from flight equipment.

As to whether the missions were necessary is still debated in both military and political circles. Controversy surrounds as to whether the Japanese were going to surrender anyway, as they were losing most of their conquests from earlier in the

Let My People Go

I

’m not sure what to wear?! After all, I’m just taking a little stroll around the neighborhood. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I want to wear a robe or something like that.

But usually, who will I actually run into on a Friday night, when the men are all in shul?!

But, now the neighborhood is -a shul! I walk out of my house, turn the corner, and voila, I’m suddenly parading down the center aisle of the men’s section. This is not something I was expecting. A neighbor-possibly, a moving car - every once in a blue moon, but a resounding Licha Doddee- not usually on my radar.

Men are standing and shuckling, spread out along both sides of the road, in formal suits no less, chanting, unabashedly in unison...And why am I the one who feels out of place?!

This certainly gives a new boost to the concept that G-d is here, G-d is there, G-d is truly everywhere!!!!

Still I’m feeling like, hey, a little heads up would be nice, before I found myself standing there like a deer in the headlights. I do an about face thinking I’ll just walk the other way. But then, I’m thinking- what if there’s the famous “other Shul” around the other corner?! So, I start pacing my own tiny, secluded blockback and forth, back and forth. And suddenly, I am hit with the eerily familiar sensation - I’m being quarantined once more, this time on my own little block.

This morning, Monday, 8 am - I’m feeling freer. I can escape in my car. I’m off to a meeting. I’m driving down a road and suddenly

- I almost take out a chazan!!! The other prayers are tucked into various driveways along the street, but

I know he feels he’s in a powerful position, because he’s literally in communion with the Lord. But still

But, now the neighborhood is -a shul!

I walk out of my house, turn the corner, and voila, I’m suddenly parading down the center aisle of the men’s section.

the chazan is planted squarely in the center of the road. Hasn’t he watched the news?! People are actually leaving their homes again and utilizing these things called vehicles in the roads; you know the kind that can actually demolish a Bimah.

he doesn’t have to ask for an actual miracle to remain in one piece. Drivers are just not expecting a tefillin wrapped Rebbe to be front and center in their path. Don’t get me wrong - it’s a wonderful thing to see that men are devoted to the command-

ments. But they need to be up in the latest practices.

Everyone is trying to make sure dates and weddings still happen. Therefore, they reserve other people’s porches and yards for the events, roomy enough to allow for social distancing. Isn’t it possible to do Shul’s the same way?! Or is it like the concept that the Torah was given in the desert because it’s owned by no one, thus available to everyone.

In other words, maybe they are feeling - let’s pray in the public domain so that maybe all the prayer energy won’t just be attributed to the one family whose property it takes place on.

Let me assure you men right here: If somebody dates on your porch you are not responsible to pay for their wedding. And just because someone gets married in your yard their kids do not become your grandchildren. So, men, if you volunteer your yard to host prayer- sorry to say - you don’t get all the benefit of the answered prayers either. But you do get a Mitzvah!

And all you other guys, I’m betting that G-d will hear you, even from some neighbor’s yard.

So guys, can you consider giving the cars and especially the neighborhood women a little more freedom to move about. In other words, as a famous biblical saying goes “Let my people go (by)!”
