life is a little simpler

Time-honored. Traditions are taken seriously. Craftsmanship is respected. Things are not slow, but we leave enough time for things to be done right. And the results show in every bottle. Boondocks Whiskey is brought to you by Whisky Advocate Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Dave Scheurich. And while you may have never heard his name, Dave has helped create some of America’s most recognized whiskeys over the last 40 years. But all this talk would make Dave blush. The real audience Dave cares about has enjoyed the drinks he created and has never given a second thought to the artist behind the scenes. And that’s just fine with Dave. His love, passion and expertise are legendary – and can be found in every bottle of Boondocks, what may well be his crowning achievement. Enjoy Responsibly.

JULY 21, 2016 | The Jewish Home

A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE By: Malkie Hyman

the atmosphere presented was always warm and comfortable. I would see them visiting other sick patients throughout the day. They wouldn’t leave until they put smiles on the people they went to see. My second to last surgery was a week before Pesach. As you can imagine, one of my concerns was what to do if I got stuck there over the Yom Tov. Would the hospital be able to accommodate my strict Passover diet? It took one phone call to Chesed 24/7 and all my worries were put to rest. They told me they would take care of everything. They actually turn the entire hospitality room over for Pesach. Women come to clean and stock cabinets with all Kosher for Pesach food. There would even be a Seder if I was feeling well enough to join. The amount of chesed that came pouring in that week was nothing short of miraculous. One nurse even remarked, “I don’t know how you people do it, but the generosity that I see pouring out from

I

t was the year 2007, Taanit Esther and as usual I was running late and rushing to Megila. I finally got my stuff together and as I entered the room where the Megila was being read, I was able to see that a table was set up with drinks and cake for after the fast. I took my seat next to a young boy and the Chazan opened his Megila scroll and laining began. Did I mention that this all took place in NY Presbyterian Hospital and that the young boy and I were both patients? At the time, I wasn’t aware of who made that night possible. I took it for granted that it was there and that it would always be there. I was in the hospital many times after that Purim and became aware of the amazing people behind all the Jewish Hospitality rooms in all the NY hospitals. These malachim go by the name of Chesed 24/7. From that moment on during the years of my illness, I never once worried about ending up in the hospital over Shabbat or Yom Tov. I always knew that my needs as a Jewish person would be met. Somebody always came around Friday afternoon to bring me Shabbat candles, fresh homemade chicken soup, challah, kugel and chulent. My family always had a clean made up apartment to stay at. I never once asked for people to come and visit me over Shabbat because I always had family with me. I found out that I never had to ask. Girls came by the hospital every Shabbat with a list of all the Jewish people there and went to visit them one by one. And not just a 5-minute “chesed visit.” The girls who came to visit me always came with smiles, stories. The nurses always assumed they were family because

total strangers is remarkable.” If this is not enough, Chesed 27/7 does this for 18 other hospitals throughout the NY Tristate area. The year is 2013 and it’s a week before Pesach and as usual I’m rushing again. My company is waiting for me down the hall, so I quickly gather my things and leave my room. As I walk down the hall, I can already hear my guests talking and laughing. I open the door to find my guests sitting around the table and eating lunch. My guests make room for me and so I sit down ready to enjoy a homemade hot meal. Oops, did I mention that I was in the hospital recovering from another surgery? And did I mention that all the food we were eating met my very specific surgical dietary needs? Everything was fat free and there was a freezer and fridge stocked with ice pops, Jell-O and chicken broth, the only foods I was allowed to eat at the time. This all took place again in Columbia Presbyterian. But the story doesn’t end here. As I was rushing to see my guests, I forgot to put my snood on my head and as much as I tried to look presentable, I was still in my pajamas covered with only a hospital robe. As we were eating a Rabbi walked into the hospitality room. I immediately remembered that my hair was not covered and that I was in sweatpants with a robe, not really Rabbi presentable. Embarrassed I said, “I'm so sorry that I'm not dressed appropriately and that my hair is not covered.” The Rabbi looked up at me and with a smile on his face and said, “in this room we are all the same and nothing else matters.” And with that he left me with a bracha, “may all the chesed that comes out of this room be a zechus for your complete refuah.” And THAT is the heart and soul of the organization. .

Dear Readers,

S

unday started out like all the others. The kids took their baths, the laundry was in the dryer, and the last things from Shabbos were finally put away. We wanted to do something fun for the kids; next Sunday is Shiva Aser b’Tammuz and we knew that we’d be home that day fasting. We decided to head to White Post Farms. The older kids would enjoy the water bouncers that they put up in the summer and the younger ones would enjoy the farm. We thought it would be perfect for the whole family. Bathing suits were donned, sunscreen was slathered on, and we started packing up the car. Right before we were about to leave we realized that our car keys were lost. We also realized that the keys we used to move our neighbor’s car were also nowhere to be found. Two sets of keys – both MIA. After fruitless searching, we decided to leave. We used our other set of keys for our car and our neighbors said that they had another set for themselves. No use postponing the trip; we’d have to search again upon our return. White Post is a very nice day trip for young kids. Located 30 miles away, during the summer and chol hamoed it seems to be a very popular excursion for families from Boro Park and Williamsburg. There’s something nice about being in a place with so many frum people. You know that if G-d forbid something happens, you can trust each other to come through – no matter what the other is wearing. The kids had a great time feeding the animals and sliding down the huge water slides. Their favorite part was the aviary where they were able to feed the parrots nectar. There were some very friendly birds that enjoyed sitting on the kids’ heads and arms.

But all good things come to an end, and at the end of the day we packed up the exhausted kids into the car. Throughout the day, in the back of our minds, we were thinking about the lost keys. We seemed to have searched everywhere. I knew that when we came home if we still couldn’t find them, I’d be sifting through the garbage to make sure my 2-year-old didn’t throw them out. About halfway through the ride home, my husband gasped. I know where I put them, he said. While he was packing up the car, he rested the keys on the roof of the van. That was where he left them. After hearing that, I sort of felt relieved. We didn’t need to search anymore; we knew where they were and they were gone. “I just feel bad for our neighbors,” I said. We would buy them another key fob, but sometimes someone likes the one that they had before. We got home and traced the blocks around our house to make sure the keys didn’t fall off when we started our journey. Oh well, we said, we learned our lesson. But then, my husband looked at the top of our car. Why? I don’t know. We had driven over 60 miles on our trip through highways and bumpy roads. Sitting in a groove on our van’s roof was my neighbor’s keys, just waiting to be given back to its rightful owner. I breathed a sigh of relief. I was so grateful. Hashem had watched over these keys throughout our journey. Wishing you a wonderful week, Shoshana

Dear Editor, Your article on Sophia Cohen was so wonderful, I felt that I was eating one of her delicious pops after reading the story. I am also truly amazed at how this business got off the ground. She is an inspiration to women all over and I appreciate how honest she is about owning a business. Things may be messy, she says, and that’s OK. What’s important is that your children know that you love them, are there for them, and are providing for them. And a few Urban Pops for dessert doesn’t hurt! Sincerely, Cheryl Gray Dear Editor, Congress adjourning and leaving Washington for a recess of seven weeks is actually great news. Our civil and economic liberties are continually at risk when any legislative body -- be it the New York City Council, New York State Legislature or Congress is in session. Elected officials on a bipartisan basis routinely pass legislation to increase spending, taxes, bor-

rowing and deficits. They also pass bills benefiting their “Pay for Play” contributors, funding pork barrel member items along with new rules and regulations infringing on our day to day lives. When Congress is not working, they can’t cause mischief and grief for the rest of us. I wish they would stay home even longer! Sincerely, Larry Penner Dear Editor, Sometimes I think that things are happening too fast around the world. Every day, sadly, we hear of another attack; we are bombarded by media regarding the upcoming elections. It’s starting to become too much and I try to close my ears to stop thinking about it all the time. Is the world changing so rapidly? Is it veering off course at an unprecedented rate? I don’t know. I wasn’t around long enough to know if this is how things happened fifty, seventy years ago. What I do know is that whenever I feel overwhelmed I remember that Continued on page 12

there is Someone Who is watching over us and making sure that all will be well. And that is a tremendous comfort. As the Three Weeks are approaching, aside from thinking about others and doing kindness for our Jewish brothers and sisters, I think that we should all take a few moments every day to thank Hashem for the little things in life that highlight His presence in our lives. It can be before you go to bed or before you daven Modim in Shemona Esrei. There are so many instances where one can see yad Hashem and what better time to be comforted by His Hand than in the Three Weeks of mourning? He is always there – no matter the time. Wishing you a safe, healthy summer, Tzirel Berger Dear Editor, This week, your dating column featured a letter written by someone whose friend is not well groomed. Many of your columnists felt that she may have slight depression. But I think that they are too quick to come to that conclusion. Some people may not be into their appearances but that doesn’t mean they have

It’s Summer! Have you played in the sand?

mental illness. Other people may have their heads in the clouds and aren’t going to be getting manicures every week. Other people are just too busy to be shopping all day. Would the columnists be saying that the person in question is depressed if the writer was writing about a boy who she knows? I think they would just chalk it up to a lack of training or parental guidance. I don’t know the person who the letter writer wrote about, but it’s nice that she is concerned about her friend’s appearance. It could be that her friend doesn’t even know that her lack of grooming is disconcerting. A good chat can certainly help. Sincerely, Dahlia H. Staten Island, NY

Dear Editor, Sitting at my barbecue this week, it was hard for me to enjoy. The mosquitoes were becoming ferocious and I came inside all bitten up. I hate to wear OFF all the time, so I did some research on “natural” ways to repel these blood-thirsty pests. Here are some plants that you can keep in your garden that can help repel mosquitoes naturally: Lavender Citronella Marigolds Basil Peppermint Garlic Rosemary Geranium I hope your readers can use this tidbit to have a more pleasant summer. Sincerely, Leora Rosen

The Week In News

A “Recently Radicalized” Terrorist

French police have identified the Muslim man who plowed his twenty ton refrigerator truck through two kilometers of Bastille Day celebrants in Nice, France, killing over eighty and wounding over two hundred. Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel drove the truck he recently rented and loaded up with artillery through the dense crowd, seeking to wreak maximum damage on the merrymakers. Bouhlel, a 31-year-old Muslim Tunisian, was killed after police shot at him during the rampage. Shortly after the finish of the annual fireworks display in Nice, Bouhlel shot through the crowd of thousands and was only stopped after police gave chase for three hundred meters. Witness Andy McArdy told CNN he saw the truck driving at high speed along the promenade and the driver “was firing a machine gun while driving.” He said everyone ran, many into a restaurant. “They didn’t know where to go, they were looking for an exit – they were hoping they’d find an exit out the back. They had to stay there for a couple of hours, but people wouldn’t even come out – they were so frightened – until the police came and said it was OK to come out,” he recalled. Two Americans, Sean Copeland, 51, and his young son, Brodie, 11, of Texas were killed in the attack. A French Jewish woman, Raymonde Mamane, 77, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday. Bouhlel’s fingerprints were identified on the inside of the killing ma-

chine. He was not unknown to the police, and was arrested previously for petty criminal acts, but he was never suspected of being involved with Islamic terror. Just a few hours earlier, the Islamist killer participated in the reveling, and even texted his brother a picture of himself laughing while out on the streets. While it appears that the terrorist had a somewhat lukewarm relationship with the religion whose cause he murdered innocents for – Bouhlel drank alcohol and indulged in pork on occasion – police believe he turned to the dark side of Islam fairly recently. French left wing president Francoise Hollande appeared to be fed up with the radical religion, saying, “We have an enemy who is going to continue to strike all the people, all the countries who have freedom as a fundamental value.” Shortly after the attacks, ISIS claimed responsibility, noting that Bouhlel acted under their flag. While the terrorist may not have been in active contact with the terrorist organization, ISIS encourages all young and believing Muslims to either join the cause and fight with the Caliphate in the Middle East, or to carry out lone wolf attacks abroad, much like the carnage in Nice. French Prime Minister Manuel Valls struck a defeatist note, allowing the possibility that Islamic terror may become something the world must learn to live with, much like car accidents and natural disasters. “France has been struck once again in her flesh, on the 14th of July, on the day of our national celebration,” Valls lamented. France will have to “learn to live with terrorism.” There have been nine terrorist attacks in France since January of 2015. 238 have been killed; 588 have been injured.

Too Many Russian Spies in Britain According to a former official at Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters, there are now more Russian spies in Britain than at the height of the Cold War. He may not have much hair, but whatever he has, he makes sure to take really good care of it. Recently, French President Francois Hollande came under fire for the exorbitant price of his haircuts when it was revealed that the Socialist leader spends nearly $11,000 a month on his presidential barber. The 61-year-old doesn’t seem to have the most unruly hair. Hollande defended his spending on the presidential barber, reminding the nation that since being elected in 2012 as a self-styled “Monsieur Normal” and defender of the poor, he has cut his own salary by 30 percent, reduced the Elysee Palace budget by 9 million euros and cut its staff by 10 percent. “You can reproach me on any-

thing you like, but not on that,” he chided, visibly uncomfortable with the subject. Declaring that he was not the person responsible for overseeing the maintenance of his locks, Hollande said, “Concerning the hairdresser’s costs, we used to use external contractors until now, and I preferred that it was handled from here.” Using a regular barber was just too plebeian. Critics expressed surprise that a leader whose hair is thinning could spend so much per month preening, when a posh men’s haircut in Paris costs about 50 euros ($56). There was no suggestion that the money was being used for hair plugs or other surgical hair costs. French media calculated that Hollande’s monthly hair maintenance is nearly four times that of an average French worker’s salary. The French aren’t too enamored with their leader and this revelation doesn’t deepen their love for him. New legislation put forth by Hollande has led to strikes across the country. It could mean that France won’t see too much of Hollande’s hair in the near future – barber or no barber.

Sweden Refuses to Air Film Connecting Islam with AntiSemitism

It seems that being politically correct in Sweden trumps honesty. State television channel Sveriges Television has decided it won’t be broadcasting a documentary which makes the obvious connection between radical Islam and anti-Semitism, because it would not be “politically correct” to do so. The documentary, “Watching the Moon at Night,” discusses the effects of terror on Jews and received funding from the Swedish Film Institute. But the television station insisted

on certain modifications to the film in order for it to air. Director Bo Persson claims that the TV station’s manager “tried to influence the film’s content. For us it was totally unacceptable that he should.” The film has already been shown in six other countries. So much for the Swedes being neutral.

Afghan Refugee Attacks Passengers on German Train

According to ISIS, a 17-year-old Afghan immigrant to Germany seeking asylum was one of their “soldiers.” The man wielded an axe and a knife

on a commuter train in Germany and slashed at least five people while shouting “Allahu Akbar” on Monday before running off the train. Police eventually found him and killed the terrorist. Before the attack, the teen recorded a video, which was released by ISIS after the attack. In the video, the terrorist gestures with a black knife and identifies himself as a “soldier of the caliphate,” threatening further attacks by the group “in every village, city and airport.” ISIS has also claimed responsibility for the recent attack in Nice, France, in which 84 people were killed and more than 300 were injured. The Islamic State leaders have called on followers to strike Western targets even without direct support or approval from the group’s formal structures. If an attacker pledges allegiance to the group before the attack, the Islamic State will typically claim the violence as its own. The terrorist arrived in Germany from Afghanistan more than a year ago. He lived in a group home for underage refugees in Bavaria starting in March before moving in with a foster family near Würzburg two weeks ago.

The attack will likely further strain German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s national response to the wave of migrants and refugees who have flowed into Germany since the beginning of last year. Faced with a migrant wave last August, Merkel threw open Germany’s doors, and many ordinary Germans greeted arriving asylum-seekers with flowers, food and clothing.

But attitudes have since soured as the nation confronts the difficulty of integrating the newcomers. A major turning point was at the beginning of the year, after an estimated 1,000 women were assaulted during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cologne. The attacks were mostly blamed on men of North African and Arab origin.

involved the alleged misuse of 366 million pesos ($7.8 million) from the state lottery agency, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. Arroyo thanked the court “for finally stopping the persecution I had unjustly gone through the last five years” and President Rodrigo Duterte “for allowing due process to take its course.” Arroyo was detained under former President Benigno Aquino III, who accused her of corruption and misrule. Aquino’s successor, Duterte, however, has said the plunder case against her was weak. Arroyo rejected his offer of a pardon because it would require that she be first convicted, preferring to fight the allegation. After the verdict, Arroyo, whose father was also a Filipino president and who was a classmate of President Bill Clinton at Georgetown University, announced, “It is my fervent hope that nobody else will suffer the persecution that had been levied on me through self-serving interpretation and implementation of the law,” she said. “And that the disregard for truth for which I was made to suffer be dealt with accordingly at the soonest possible time.” Arroyo, 69, finished her tumultuous nine-year term in 2010 but was arrested the following year on an election fraud charge, for which she was allowed to post bail. She was later charged with plunder. Despite her detention, she was re-elected to Congress in May. She stayed in a hospital rather than a prison because of her degenerative lumbar spine disease and neck ailment that prompted her to use a wheelchair and brace in public.

Accidental Blast Kills 2 Soldiers

An accidental explosion at an army post in the Golan Heights claimed the lives of two members of the IDF, including one from New Jersey, and wounded three others. The incident happened at seven in the morning on Sunday when Sgt. Hussam Tafesh, a Druze from Beit Jann, accidentally set off a grenade he was holding while talking to Sgt. Shlomo Rindenow, 20, who was originally from New Jersey. The IDF said it was still unclear why Tafesh was holding the grenade in the first place. Three other soldiers who were inside a nearby jeep were wounded. They are being questioned about the nature of the blast and whether there was an argument that preceded it. On Monday, the two soldiers were laid to rest. Shlomo’s brother begged for people to attend his funeral. “During most of his service my brother was alone,” Jeff Rindenow said. “He volunteered for the army because he wanted to be a fighter. We ask that at least in his last farewell he should not be alone. “After he was almost alone throughout his whole service, we hope that now, in his last moments, he will surrounded by love.”

Bombing on Light Rail Averted

A terrorist from the West Bank was stopped by police this week before he had a chance to board the Jerusalem light rail on Jaffa Road while carrying knives and three pipe bombs. An alert police officer stopped the Palestinian who was carrying a suspicious package and found a bomb inside upon examination. The terrorist was arrested and sappers were deployed at the scene to neutralize the bomb. The attempted murderer is in his 20s and is from Beit Ula, near Chevron. “This morning, thanks to the vigilance of the light rail security guards, a large terror attack was averted,” said Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat. “Our message to the public is to return to their normal routines, to remain vigilant and to never give in to terror.” Since October, close to 40 Jews have been killed in a rash of terror, including car-rammings, stabbings and shootings.

Military Attaché to Israel Tied to Coup

This past weekend’s failed military coup in Turkey has a close connection to Israel. Akin Ozturk, the former Turkish air force chief who has been named as one of the coup’s main instigators, was Turkey’s military attaché to Israel in the 1990s. He led the Turkish air force from 2013 to 2015. Turkey has laid the majority of

blame for the upheaval on Fethullah Gulen, a well-known anti-Islamist cleric who lives in the U.S., and has called on the U.S. to extradite Gulen. Gulen had left Turkey in 1999. But Gulen has categorically denied any involvement with the events in Turkey. “I condemn, in the strongest terms, the attempted military coup in Turkey. Government should be won through a process of free and fair elections, not force.” He added, “I pray to G-d for Turkey, for Turkish citizens, and for all those currently in Turkey that this situation is resolved peacefully and quickly.” On Monday, Ozturk and 26 other senior officers were charged with treason. The general, though, insisted, “I am not the person who planned or led the coup.”

OHEL Thanks These Five Towns Employers: Three Police Officers Murdered in Baton Rouge

Less than ten days after five police officers were brutally shot and killed in Dallas while protecting protesters at a Black Lives Matter protest, three more officers were shot and killed and another three were seriously injured last Sunday morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Gavon Long, an African-American 29-year-old man from Kansas City, committed the heinous act of murder because he was angry over police treatment of black people. Long, who used an assault rifle and dressed in black with a face covering while carrying out his shooting, used tactful movements to shoot at police officers while avoiding non-police. Long, who was a former Marine and served in Iraq, left a trail of social media postings and videos in which he railed against the police. “Violence is not THE answer (its a answer), but at what point do you stand up so that your people dont become the Native Americans…EXTINCT?,” he wrote

on Twitter four days before carrying out his attack. In one video that Long posted recently, he notes that he used to belong to the Nation of Islam, but says, “Don’t affiliate me with it; don’t affiliate me with anything.” His philosophy, though, seemed to be in line with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan’s philosophy. After the police shootings of two black men in Baton Rouge and Minnesota several weeks ago, Farrakhan proclaimed in a video that he posted online, “There is no freedom without the shedding of blood.” He added, “When you are willing and not afraid anymore to pay the price for freedom — don’t let this white man tell you that violence is wrong.” After the shooting, President Obama condemned the killings. But, as the Huffington Post gleefully noted, “Obama And Democrats Set A Trap For Trump After Baton Rouge.” In the White House speech meant to condemn the killing of the three police officers, the president seemed to pivot very quickly to politics. “We don’t need inflammatory rhetoric. We don’t need careless accusations thrown around to score political points or to advance an agenda. We need to temper our words and open our hearts ... all of us.” President Obama’s supporters understood

this to be a veiled way for the president to call out Donald Trump in advance for any strong statements that may be made at the Republican Convention this week. The president, though, did not address inflammatory statements by Louis Farrakhan and others, which may have incited the killings of the three police officers. A Facebook posting by one of the three police officers killed, Montrell Jackson, 32, highlights the difference between good and evil. Whereas Long spewed hate, Jackson, who was a 32-year-old African-American police officer, sought to spread love. Several days after the police shooting of Alton Sterling, which set off the protests, he wrote on Facebook, “These are trying times. Please don’t let hate infect your heart. This city MUST and WILL get better.” He added, “This city MUST and WILL get better…Any protesters, officers, friends, family or whoever, if you see me and need a hug or want to say a prayer. I got you.” This kind-hearted police officer recently celebrated his third wedding anniversary and had a 4-month-old son. Also killed was Matthew Gerald, 41, who joined the Baton Rouge police four months ago. He served three tours in Iraq. Gerald and his wife, a

The Hysteria of Pokemon Go

In the relatively short time since its release, the new Pokemon Go app has managed to revive both the nostalgia of the millennial generation for the Gameboys of its youth and the flailing Japanese videogame pio-

neer, Nintendo. If you haven’t played the game yet, or bumped into a human pillar stopped in the middle of a busy intersection while entranced by the game, you may need to get out more often. Pokemon Go seems to be as ubiquitous as the pocket monsters (English for Pokemon) people are racing to catch. The game is part of an exciting new technology called “Augmented Reality,” through which one can turn his or her smartphone into a lens with which to see a different world. In this case, one can use the phone’s camera to scout his surroundings for Pokemon which will appear onscreen, embedded in the person’s actual surroundings. Can’t find a monster? Well then it’s time to keep moving; perhaps there is one lurking behind the fire hydrant down the block. Just don’t try to fake movement by hopping on a treadmill; the app uses actual GPS to track a players’ movements and it’s his location – not steps taken – that cause a Pokemon to jump out. Once a Pokemon is found, it’s time to snag it with a Pokeball and add it to one’s collection. The game has caused some otherwise levelheaded individuals to do

some pretty monstrous stuff. There have been a number of car crashes reportedly caused by drivers too busy focusing on a Pikachu in front of them and not on the road signs. Then there’s the story of the two gamers who fell off a 90-foot cliff in California after sneaking over an “off-limits” fence in hot pursuit of a Diglett. The real fire department had to come and rescue them. As always, though, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. When can we say we’re too big for games?

All the Rage on the Road

If you’ve been feeling a little unsafe on the road these days, there may be a reason for that. A recent AAA study confirmed that at least eight in ten drivers in the U.S. have engaged in aggressive driving behavior in the past year. That includes minor offenses like honking or telling a lane-neighbor to “Shove Off!” but it also includes some dangerous actions like tailgating, something half of us have done recently. As expected, men were reported to be more aggressive than female drivers. In fact, men were three times as likely to report that they intentionally rammed into another vehicle (ouch!). And us Northeasterners are reportedly the worst at managing ourselves inside a car. “Aggressive driving is a bigger problem today than it was three years ago,” said Jurek Grabowski, director of research for the foundation. “We were really surprised by some of the results.” This confirms an earlier survey which found that two out of three drivers think we are a little more loony behind the wheel than we were three years ago. “We all have to be mindful about the way we drive and take a chill pill,” said John Townsend, spokesman for AAA Mid-Atlantic. Wise words indeed. No one knows the exact cause of our road rage, but it may have to do

with the lower gas prices we have had in the U.S. recently. Now that gas is relatively inexpensive, more people have taken to the road and congestion has increased as a result, leading to stressed drivers. “Everybody wants to get there faster, but the truth is you don’t get there so much faster that it makes [getting angry] a useful part of your day,” Grabowski said. “Sometimes it’s better — to quote John Lennon — sometimes you have to let it be.”

Police Lieutenant Acquitted of All Charges in Freddie Gray Case

After Freddie Gray sustained fatal spinal injuries while being transported by police, resulting in mass demonstrations, Baltimore’s state attorney Marilyn Mosby promised to bring the six police officers involved in his death to justice. To date, she is 0-4 — three officers were acquitted and one officer’s trial ended in a mistrial. Last Monday, Judge Barry G. Williams acquitted Lt. Brian Rice, the highest ranking of the six officers. Prosecutors alleged that Rice caused Gray’s death by failing to secure him in a seatbelt in the back of the van. Until a few days before the Freddie Gray incident, it was up to the arresting police officer’s discretion whether to fasten a seat belt on the detainee. Judge Williams found that prosecutors had failed to establish Rice’s level of training or his awareness of the new policy put in place several days before Gray’s arrest that removed officers’ discretion in deciding whether to secure a detainee in a seatbelt. Judge Williams noted that Lieutenant Rice’s “failure to seatbelt may have been a mistake or it may have been bad judgement,” but it was not a crime.

Another Chris Christie ally has been found to be guilty of corruption. Former Port Authority chairman David Samson, who was elected to the post by the governor, pled guilty to using his position to maintain United Airlines direct flights to his vacation home’s area in South Carolina, despite the fact that the route was never more than half-filled and it was not practical for United to keep. Earlier in the year, United forced its CEO, Jeff Smisek, and two lobbyists it had on staff to resign after learning about the arrangement. United now will have to pay a $2.25 million fine for their role in the government corruption affair. Samson now faces 24 months in prison. Samson was not named in the “Bridgegate” scandal, which is credited for bringing down Governor Christie’s standing with the public, but that scandal focused a spotlight on the Port Authority and eventually brought this to light. So much for Chris Christie throwing his weight around.

Army Warns Soldiers about Days of Rage

The world may seem like a dangerous place for anyone to travel these days. ISIS threatens with terrorism abroad, and rage filled protests have

taken up the streets in many U.S. cities. But for members of the police and military here, the sad reality is that in some areas they may be walking with large targets on their backs. The U.S. Army recently issued a warning to all of its members to avoid some 37 cities in these hot summer days as violent “Days of Rage” have been planned to protest police and military actions. While the “Days of Rage,” originally credited to the online hacking group Anonymous, may just be a false online rumor, the Army is not taking any chances with its members. Army spokesman Lt. Col. Jason Shropshire said the safety of soldiers and their families is a high priority. “For security reasons, we don’t discuss force-protection measures that we put into place at our Army installations or the specifics of cautionary advice we provide to our soldiers,” he said. The notice says that “being anywhere near these protests greatly increases the chance that you could become a victim of violence. When the mob mentality takes over, normally decent people can commit heinous acts.”

Trump and Pence: A Winning Duo?

Has Trump found his equalizer? The Republican presidential nominee has appointed conservative Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his running mate and hopes the party will follow his lead now that the wellliked GOP veteran is on his ticket. Pence, who served six terms in Congress before being elected to his current position as governor, is known for his smart fiscal record in Indiana. “Mike Pence is a man of honor, character and honesty,” Trump said. “Hillary Clinton is the embodiment of corruption. He fights for the people and he is going to fight

The Jewish Home | JULY 21, 2016

for you.” Pence is also known for his conservative views on social issues and his strong religious identity, which may help to appeal to a base of voters that Trump has alienated. Pence has disagreed with Trump in the past, particularly regarding Trump’s controversial call for a ban on Muslim immigrants. “A social and economic conservative with strong religious views and think-tank credentials, Pence could conceivably shore up some of Trump’s weaknesses among certain strands of the GOP base and some ideologically-committed conservatives inside and outside the Beltway,” the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics wrote. “Pence also fits Trump’s oft-mentioned preference for a running mate who knows politics.” Pence appeared to be ready to put aside any differences he has with the nominee and focus on winning in November. “Donald Trump understands the frustration and the hopes of the American people like no leader since Ronald Reagan,” he said. “As Ronald Reagan said, we are tired of being told that a little intellectual elite in a far distant capital can plan our lives better for us than we

can plan them for ourselves. Donald Trump gets it and he understands the American people.”

Race Relations have Worsened

We didn’t need a poll to tell us this, but a recent Rasmussen poll released on Tuesday revealed that most Americans believe that race relations have gotten worse under President Obama, America’s first African-American president. Sixty percent of respondents said race relations have deteriorated under Mr. Obama, the highest mark since he was elected eight years ago. That number is up 18 points since 2014, when 42 percent said the rela-

tionship between the races had worsened. Just 9 percent said race relations have gotten better under the first black president, and 28 percent said they have stayed about the same. Although most Americans said that race relations has worsened, white respondents were more likely than minorities to say that race relations have gotten worse. Sixty-six percent of whites responded that race relations have worsened under Mr. Obama, compared to 51 percent of minorities, including 38 percent of black respondents. A plurality of black respondents, 49 percent, said race relations are about the same. Republicans and Democrats are also sharply divided over the state of race relations. Eighty-four percent of Republicans and 67 percent of unaffiliated voters said things have worsened under Mr. Obama, compared to 32 percent of Democrats. How can we keep our country united? The parties differ in how to ameliorate racial discord. Republicans are more likely to put emphasis on parental and personal responsibility, while Democrats said the government has not done enough to improve the lives of black Amer-

icans. Young respondents echoed Democrats’ sentiments, while older respondents put the emphasis on parental and personal responsibility, like most Republicans said. 71 percent of black respondents said the government has not done enough to help black Americans, compared to 39 percent of whites and 43 percent of other minorities.

Lost and Found

More than 30 years ago, Chris Moody borrowed her mother’s ring when she went out roller skating one night. But at the end of the fun evening, the ring was lost. Moody’s mother received the ring from Moody’s grandmother, so it was a poignant loss. Fast forward 30 years and Moody’s mother is no longer alive. While Chris is shopping at a thrift shop, a ring on the counter catches her eye. Chris tells the employees that her mother’s ring looked just that and had the initials W.E. on it. After taking a closer look, Chris realizes that she is reunited with her mother’s ring once again. Although the price of the ring was $80, the clerks waived the fee for her. Now, Chris can wear the ring, remembering her mother who passed away more than 25 years ago.

Some Puzzling Words

is on the move – and so are its customers. You see, the currency at the Moving Food Truck is exercise. Want a burger for lunch? Better start walking. Patrons were first required to walk about 3.3 miles or run 2.5 miles before they chowed down. Need a squirt of ketchup? No problem! That’ll be another 500 meters.

The Moving Food Truck was created in collaboration with an anti-obesity group in Portugal. Portugal has some of the highest obesity rates in Europe, and the one-day campaign aimed to educate the public on what it takes to burn off a high-calorie meal. Think the exercise turned cus-

tomers away? Well, there were many who got off their couches and turned out to eat their lunch on the move; in the one day it was open, 20 cheeseburgers, 32 pizza slices, and 50 cups of soda were purchased – that’s 22,934 calories burned. Because, you know, this food is made for walking.

Do you know the answer to 21 down? Better keep it to yourself. Recently, a 91-year-old German woman couldn’t help herself when she passed by a crossword puzzle and filled in the blanks. But this was no ordinary puzzle. It was hanging at Nuremberg’s Neues Museum and was part of “Reading-work-piece” by artist Arthur Koepcke. The 1965 work is valued at $89,000, or at least it was before the nonagenarian wordsmith began scribbling solutions to the crossword clues. Now, the woman, who was among a group of senior citizens touring the museum, is being investigated

Christine has slapped Anita and threw water over her. She shut off the hot water to the apartment and cleared out their belongings from their shared cellar. In Germany, tenants’ rights are strongly protected and it seems that Christine was at her wit’s end. Last week, she decided that enough was enough. When the Hagemanns woke up and tried to leave their apartment, they found that their front door was blocked by a wall of bricks. Christine had it closed up while they slept. She left them a letter saying they could climb out of the window or use the exit from the basement. The police were called, but Christine refused to remove the bricks. A local fire brigade was called to tear it down. Police have been called to the home no fewer than 26 times. “I wanted to set an example, to raise public awareness,” Christine K said. “That’s why I had a friend brick up the door.” “We wanted to spend our retirement here,” the 77-year-old Mrs. Hagemann told Westen Allegmeine Zeitung newspaper. “She took our quality of life away.” “I’ve had serious heart surgery,” the 79-year-old Mr. Hagemann told Bild. “Every day there was something new. One day our mailbox was gone.” When he found the front door bricked up, he was “speechless,” he said. “As a student I witnessed the Berlin Wall. It felt the same again.” Finally, despite their assertions that they are in the right, the Hagemanns are going to move. You know what they say: good fences make good neighbors.

Roaches’ Sense of Direction for damage to property. She claims, though, that the artwork includes the phrase (in English) “Insert Words,” so she was simply following instructions. At 91, perhaps she should have known better.

Fight over Who’s Right Jörg and Anita Hagemann have been living in their rental property since 2012 but their landlady wants

them to move. Christine K, as she is known under German privacy laws, tried to evict them over a dispute of a shared garden. But the couple, who is in their seventies, has refused. Since then, the landlady has endeavored to make life miserable for them – and it seems to be working.

Hopefully you never see these in your house, but if you’re ever visiting a no-star coffee shop in Manhattan and you see some roaches running around, you’ll see that they have a lot to do. And they’re going places. In fact, roaches don’t need a map as they scurry through your cabinets. It

The Jewish Home | JULY 21, 2016

turns out, according to researchers, that these pesky insects have an internal GPS. The internal GPS is about the same used by rats and even humans, so they’re even more similar to us than we think (how comforting).

Now when you’re missing the paprika in your cabinet just ask your friendly pet roach. He’ll be happy to show you where it is.

A Recycled Reception Be happy that Kim and Dan Woolnough didn’t send you an invite to their wedding. In an effort to keep costs low, the British couple cut corners at every turn. Their frugality “paid off” – their nuptials cost only $4,000. The biggest thing they saved on was the food. But don’t think you missed out by staying on our side of the ocean. The food served was out-of-date that was destined to be thrown out. U.K. charity ReFuse, that sources food from local supermarkets, bakeries, and small businesses that would otherwise have gone in the trash, was responsible for arranging all the food. On the menu was tomato and red pepper soup, followed by vegetable curry or pasta, and a range of desserts. And if you couldn’t stomach the fare, don’t worry – guests were sent home with the leftover food lest some of it would be thrown out. The food wasn’t the only thing at the wedding that was secondhand. Kim wore a previously worn dress from a swap shop that cost $100. The invitations were made out of recycled paper. And even the rings were made from reused metal. The 24-year-old bride admitted, “Some of our guests thought it was a bit weird that we were having out-ofdate food for the wedding breakfast, but everyone said it was really tasty.” “We didn’t want to waste anything so we had to be quite creative.” I believe that’s putting it nicely, Kim.

Green Tea for the Orange Donald

Attention Donald Trump. Want to “cleanse your soul” and show people how smart you are? How about chugging some green tea? Recently, an Indian company gifted the Donald with 6,000 green tea teabags. Apparently, they think that the presidential hopeful really needs to drink their tea. “Our message is, please Mr. Trump drink the tea. For your sake, for America’s sake, for the world’s sake,” the company pleaded on its website. An online video shows an enormous box of tea being delivered to Trump Towers in New York. The accompanying message read, “Dear Mr. Trump, namaste from India, we are sending you lots and lots of natural green tea. It fights against harmful free radicals. It helps purify mind and body and regain a healthy balance. It has also proven to make people smarter.” 6,000 teabags is a lot; if drunk 4 times a day (!) it will last for four years, enough to calm him through four years of Hillary’s reign. The company, Te-a-Me Teas, set up a website, teafortrump.com, where people can tweet a message to Trump and urge him to drink the tea daily. “We firmly believe green tea can do a lot of good to people. We thought green tea will help him cleanse his mind, body and soul,” its spokesman said. A video on the website delivers the following message to Trump and the world. “Donald Trump has got the whole world worried; Mexicans, Muslims, Jews, blacks, women, immigrants…Democrats, Republicans. We can’t stop him, but maybe we can change him?” I’m sure that gallons of green tea will do the trick.

Yeshiva of the South Shore Brightens Savings

P

SEG Long Island announced Yeshiva South Shore is a recipient of a rebate of $86,280 for upgrading its facilities and participating in the PSEG Long Island Commercial Efficiency Program. “PSEG Long Island is building strong relationships with our local communities and working to maintain a high level of trust, understanding and service. Sponsoring programs that assist schools in achieving energy efficiency is just one way we accomplish this goal,” said David Daly, president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “I commend Rabbi Kamenetzky and the school families for joining PSEG Long Island in helping to make Long Island a safer and cleaner environment for our next generation.” Yeshiva of the South Shore upgraded the lighting systems throughout the building, replacing more than 970 fluorescent lighting fixtures and incandescent light bulbs with LED efficient lighting. Through these improvements, it is estimated the Yeshiva of the South Shore will save more than 165,500 kilowatt hours (kWh) and $27,700 a year on their electric bill – given that lighting accounts for the largest portion of energy used in commercial buildings, sometimes accounting for 25-30 percent of a facility’s total energy consumption, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. In addition to the savings the Yeshiva

will see on their electric bill, an upgrading to LED lighting will also dramatically reduce the District’s maintenance costs, as the average LED fixture and bulb has a 15-year lifespan. “The PSEG Long Island team worked diligently with our Yeshiva to brighten our children’s environment and help us ease the burden of our utilities expense,” said Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky, Dean, Yeshiva of South Shore. “The experience of having a utility company so well connected and concerned with the needs of their constituents, was truly, pardon the pun, enlightening.” Independent annual evaluations by Opinion Dynamics Corporation have found PSEG Long Island’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Programs to generate energy savings that are cost-effective. In their evaluation for 2014, Opinion Dynamics found that the PSEG Long Island Commercial Efficiency Program has a benefit/cost ratio of 3.2, which means that the program generated $3.20 in benefits to the utility and its customers for every $1.00 in costs to operate the program, including rebates. For more information on PSEG Long Island’s available residential and commercial rebates and incentives, as well as energy saving tips, please visit https://www.psegliny. com/savemoney.

Camp Simcha Special Girls End Two Weeks in The Greatest Place on Earth

A

s these words are penned, 120 girls living with chronic illness and medical challenges are packing their suitcases, exchanging addresses and phone numbers, and preparing to leave Camp Simcha Special, their refuge from a world where illness makes them different. “The end of a camp session is always sad, but for the children of Camp Simcha Special, the end of camp means leaving a very special world for another year,” explained Rabbi Simcha Scholar, executive vice president of Chai Lifeline, the organization that runs Camp Simcha/Camp Simcha Special. “Camp Simcha is an environment filled with love and acceptance. Its facilities are adapted to their needs, so they are no longer on the outside looking in. For many of our campers, it’s the only place where they feel they can truly be themselves.” The two-week respite allows campers, who range in age from 8 to 18, to emerge from their shells, try new activities, build new skills, and make friends with whom to share the challenges of their lives. Aided by trained counselors and specialists, campers learn that they can do anything to which they set their minds. For some, it’s learning to swim. For others, it is performing in front of their peers as part of camp shows.

Still others enhance skills in creative arts, music, or sports. The camp’s administrative staff works year-round to find special activities that can be adapted for children whose abilities may be compromised. This year, campers competed in a “Tough Mudder” built just for them. Counselors helped children complete the obstacle course that included scaling an incline, walking the plank, and slogging through inches of mud. The camp’s water-submersible wheelchairs, which can be hosed down after use, were pressed into service so that even the most compromised children could participate. Campers were eager to describe the course to a visitor. “The mud was so fun. I never did that before,” said a young girl. “We couldn’t stop laughing,” added another. Each year, the camp staff chooses a theme that anchors the session and every day. This year, camp emulated the colors of the rainbow, and every day the entire camp changed hues. Girls would wake up to a dining hall bathed in the day’s color, often reflected in the color of their counselors’ hair or their own painted faces. “Oh, let me guess! It’s Green Day!” cried an alumna who came to share in a special visiting day for former staff members. She hugged the campers she met on the way to the camp Carnival. Tour de Simcha

cyclists, who raised almost $1 million for Chai Lifeline’s children, rode through the camp gates and into Camp Simcha special on Pink Day. From above, the entrance plaza was a sea of pink punctuated by the jewel tones of cyclists’ jerseys. While there are things to do throughout the day and evening, sometimes the most important interactions come during the down time when children and their counselors relax and talk. Last year, Camp Simcha built a hammock park in the midst of a copse of trees. Situated in the intersection of two main camp

walks, it has become a favorite destination for breaks and talks that range from the silly to the profound. “Camp Simcha Special is a good place for kids to talk about what’s going on in their minds,” commented a counselor. “There’s an openness and acceptance here that they don’t find anywhere else.” As they prepare to say goodbye, campers agreed on what they would miss most about their magical reprieve from their everyday lives. “Everything!” they said. “We will miss every part of Camp Simcha Special!”

Shiva Asar B’Tammuz Program of Inspiration

T

orah Connections, a Flatbush-based group, will offer an awesome series of four chizuk lectures to the public on the fast day of Shiva Asar B’Tammuz, this coming Sunday, July 24 at the Yeshiva of Brooklyn (Boys Division), 1200 Ocean Parkway on the corner of Avenue L. The program will focus on the challenge of “Finding Meaning in the Three Weeks” from Shiva Asar B’Tammuz through Tisha B’Av when the Jewish nation mourns the destruction of our Batei Mikdash and other related national tragedies such as the Crusades and Churban Europe. The Kinos will begin with a talk at 3 P.M. by Rabbi Avrohom Schorr, the Rav of Beis Medrash Nezer Gedalyahu in Flatbush. Rabbi Dovid Orlofsky, internationally renowned speaker from Yerushalayim, will offer his insights at 4 P.M.

This week, campers at Ruach Day Camp enjoyed Purim in July, along with inflatable slides, an obstacle course and bounce houses, and cotton candy and sno-cones. The older bunks had a chocolatey time in Hershey Park. Late nights were so much fun, and the Girls vs. Boys Zimriah Competition was a blast!

At 5 P.M. Rabbi Mordechai Becher, Senior Lecturer at Gateways, will address the audience on how to make the Three Weeks more meaningful. Rabbi Ron Yitzchok Eisenman, Rav of Congregation Ahavas Yisroel in Passaic, will deliver divrei chizuk at 6 P.M. The program will conclude with Mincha and participants are requested to bring their own siddurim. The program is open to men and women with separate seating. An elevator is available and admission is $10 per person regardless of how many lectures one comes for. There will be a maximum charge of $25 per any one family. Torah Connections will also be organizing its Annual Tisha B’Av Program also at the same Yeshiva of Brooklyn location on Motzei Shabbos, August 13 and Sunday, August 14. Sponsorships are encouraged. For more information, please call (728) 998-5822.

Preparing for a Gap Year in Israel

W

hile recent high school grads are enjoying their summer in camp, relaxing or touring, moms and dads are certainly thinking ahead to, when in a few short weeks, their children will be leaving home for the first time. Stores and catalogues are full of suggested

college dorm accessories to provide the incoming students with some of the comforts of home. But what do you do when your child is leaving for a year to study aboard, specifically in Israel? Travelers are now severely limited by luggage allowances, as well as the usual electrical re-

quirements, and cultural and language barriers (and if you think these last two aren’t issues, you’ve clearly never dealt with customer service departments in the Holy Land). How can you possibly fit everything your child will need for the year in one or even two suitcases? Will your child be able to acquire what he or she needs to fill any gaps? For the past three years, Tamarim Concierge has been delivering just what students need, right to their dorm rooms, before the school year begins. Far more than just blankets, pillows and linens, the company delivers shelving units, small appliances, ironing boards, fans, Shabbat lamps, storage units, power cords, adapters – even small refrigerators! Once the school year is underway, Tamarim also helps bridge the 6,000 miles between parents and students. This first-time, long-term separation can be difficult on both ends, and Tamarim offers a wide range of options to make things just a bit easier. “I’ve used Tamarim Concierge on a couple of occasions over the past academic year,” shared Neal Goldberg, a Five Towns resident. “I’ve sent a care package to a lone soldier and when my daughter, who was in seminary, needed a last-minute delivery of supplies in order to be able to participate in a much-anticipated tiyul with her friends. In both cases Tammy and Tamar worked with me to do exactly what needed to be done within my budget and tight timeframe.” Tamarim works with clients to make it easy to send smiles and hugs from home with custom-made gifts. Surprise your child with a birthday balloon bouquet combined with an

A fun-filled week at Simcha Day Camp

Around the World with Camp Al Haderech

W

e had quite an exciting week in Al Haderech Juniors as we deliver… around the world! The fun started on Monday with our toilet paper fashion show. This activity is a yearly favorite, but this time, we did it with a twist! Every bunk had to design their toilet paper dress to fit the fashion of another country! We had the Statue of Liberty from America, a hula skirt from Hawaii, a kimono from China, and a British royal princess, to name a few! The creativity and excitement of the girls was incredible,

and it set the tone for a fabulous week. We continued our deliveries around the world to “Rush”ia on Tuesday while we “rushed” to win in our “Minute to Win it” activity. The Oreo Challenge, Bean Hunt, Straw Struggle, and Pitcher Pass were funny to watch! Our fun continued in Mexico on Wednesday with a fiesta at lunch…chips with salsa and a rainbow piñata! Every bunk got a prize from the piñata and enjoyed the fiesta. Some bunks even had a bonus trip to the park that day, and everyone enjoyed it immensely. Our trip day on Thursday was enjoy-

able, as well. The K’s, P’s, and 1’s enjoyed watching “Alice in Wonderland at the theater, and the 2’s and 3/4’s were excited to have their turn at All American Gymnastics. A good time was had by all! Friday took us to China, where we delivered the fun with a Chinese Auction! All week, we had Payday, where the campers earned Al Haderech dollars for their bunks for participating nicely, davening, benching, and exhibiting fine middos. Every bunk got to buy tickets with the Al Haderech dollars for a chance to win some exciting priz-

es! We also enjoyed our special Chinese snack, and we cannot believe that another week of camp is already behind us. All of the sports and specials kept is hopping…and happy! Looking ahead to next week, we’ve already begun practicing for our second annual Lip Sync event, as we “zip” our lips for next week’s theme…Zip Codes! The girls will definitely deliver impressive performances if their practices are any indication! Can’t wait for next week to enjoy more “We Deliver” Al Haderech fun!

F

ountaingate Gardens, the proposed Life Plan Community (also known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community) to be built in Commack, Long Island, has released a new video featuring the vision for the community. The video includes information from Herbert H. Friedman, Executive Vice President/CEO of Gurwin, the project’s not-for-profit sponsor. In addition, you’ll hear from the project’s developer, architect, sales and marketing partner and board of directors. “We’re eager to share our vision for the future of senior living on Long Island,” said Friedman, who noted that Gurwin has been a leader in caring for seniors for more than 25 years. “Creating Fountaingate Gardens – an active, independent living community – is the fulfillment of a dream to provide seniors with a wonderful new retirement option, and this video allows us to clearly define and communicate our vision. With a focus on the International Council on Active Aging’s seven dimensions of wellness – intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, vocational, emotional and environmental – we have been attracting active seniors who are

delighted to have this new option on Long Island. In fact, we already have more than 100 future residents who have placed priority deposits.” The new video provides glimpses of why so many Long Island seniors are contemplating the move to a Life Plan Community like Fountaingate Gardens. Photographs of models and renderings show representative examples of the spacious one- and two-bedroom floor plans in The Parkview and The Terraces apartment residences, some with dens and balconies, along with the beautifully landscaped grounds and fountains. Viewers will also have a sneak peek inside a representation of the extraordinary clubhouse, complete with on-site restaurants, a bistro, a theater, indoor heated saltwater pool, classrooms and craft rooms. The video can be found on Fountaingate Gardens’ website, http:// fountaingateli.org/, YouTube channel http://bit.ly/FGvid and Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/ FountaingateGardensLI/, and is also available for viewing at the new Fountaingate Gardens’ Information Center located at 50 Hauppauge Road, Commack, NY 11725.

A- Vice President-elect Andrew Johnson arrived in Washington ill from typhoid fever. The night before his March 4, 1865 inauguration, he fortified himself with whiskey at a party hosted by his old friend, Secretary of the Senate John W. Forney. The next morning, hung over and confronting cold, wet, and windy weather, Johnson proceeded to the office of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, where he complained of weakness and asked for a tumbler of whiskey. Drinking it

straight, he quickly consumed two more. Then, growing red in the face, Johnson entered the overcrowded and overheated Senate chamber. After Hamlin delivered a brief and stately valedictory, Johnson rose unsteadily to harangue the distinguished crowd about his humble origins and his triumph over the rebel aristocracy. In the shocked and silent audience, President Abraham Lincoln showed an expression of “unutterable sorrow,” while Senator Charles Sumner covered his face with his hands. Former Vice President Hamlin tugged vainly at Johnson’s coattails, trying to cut short his remarks. After Johnson finally quieted, took the oath of office, and kissed the Bible, he tried to swear in the new senators, but became so confused that he had to turn the job over to a Senate clerk. 5. C- President Franklin Roosevelt had John Nance Garner, Henry Wallace and Harry Truman as his vice presidents, but then again, he was elected to four terms. 6. E- He spelled it potatoe 7. Torah Thought

Parshat Chukat By Rabbi Berel Wein

T

he entire book of Bamidbar is a litany of bad behavior, poor choices and a lack of faith that dooms that generation – a great generation that left Egypt triumphantly and miraculously – to death in the desert of Sinai. But perhaps the most tragic event on a human and personal level is contained in this week’s Torah reading when the fate of Moshe is sealed. He will not be allowed to enter the Land of Israel. The Torah itself ascribes this punishment to the fact that Moshe smote the rock to bring forth water for the people instead of speaking to the rock. Though this

reason is emphasized a number of times in the Torah, the great thinkers and commentators of the Jewish people over the ages have searched for a deeper understanding of the cause that led to Moshe’s ultimate fate. Maimonides saw it in terms of a cumulative effect of incidents – albeit individually, perhaps not of major consequence – where Moshe was guilty of anger and of not fulfilling G-d’s will in exactitude. Other thinkers and commentators placed blame not so much on Moshe himself but rather on the circumstances of his leadership and relationship to that generation of Jews, those that now

would have to enter the Land of Israel, conquer and settle it. For various reasons, among them the awe and reverence that this new generation would grant to Moshe would border on the cult of personality, if not even idolatry he would no longer be treated as a human being, but would be elevated to the status of a deity. If nothing else Judaism is certainly an iconoclastic faith where human beings, no matter how great and holy they may be, remain human beings. However we view what the ultimate cause of Moshe’s fate was – some even attributing it to his being prone to anger – the pathos of the situation is inescapable, even to us removed from the event by many millennia. Reaching and living in the Promised Land was the goal that he had striven for his entire lifetime. That it was denied to him on the threshold of the entry of the Jewish people into their promised homeland, makes the event doubly sad and emotionally disturbing.

We all sympathize with our great leader and teacher but there is a great lesson of faith taught to us by the narrative of this incident. Human beings always attempt to ascribe simple and uncomplicated motives to human behavior, and even have the arrogance to do so regarding G-d as well. Upon reflection we can all recognize that there are many different factors and motives, causes and effects, which influence our choices in life and our behavior. But we are always hard-pressed to pull all the strings together and truly analyze our motives. It is only our Creator, Who, so to speak, sees the whole picture, knows all of the inner workings of the human psyche and soul and is able to judge correctly all of the issues involved in human behavior. This may be the ultimate reason why we are commanded to accept G-d’s judgment in all matters, even when it is beyond our rational understanding. Shabbat shalom.

The Observant Jew

I Am the Greatest By Rabbi Jonathan Gewirtz

W

hen a young boxer named Cassius Clay took the world by storm in the 1950’s and then won a gold medal at the 1960 Olympics, one would not have known that over fifty years later, he would still be one of the most famous athletes of all time. Known by the name he took in 1964 when he converted to Islam, Muhammad Ali was a self-promoter who had a remarkable career. He famously said about his fighting prowess, “It ain’t bragging if you can back it up!” Indeed, over the course of his career, he went largely undefeated and won numerous high-profile fights. With his rhyming taunts and his arrogant swagger, Muhammad Ali was someone you grudgingly had to respect as he won fight after fight. One of his most famous brags was the simple phrase, “I am the greatest.” He would repeat that over and over. When he died in 2016, many people started to compare his boxing record to that of boxers like Rocky Marciano and said that he wasn’t as good of a fighter. I don’t really know, and I don’t really care to know. Growing up, Muhammad Ali was in my periph-

ery. I never watched boxing matches but you always heard him quoted. He was an amazing showman. I think a large part of his success was a result of that showmanship, and not because he intimidated others fighters. Let’s digress for a moment to something I do know about: speeches. Have you ever heard a speaker begin by giving a reason why the speech might not be so good? For example, “I wish I’d had more notice before being asked to speak,” or “I’m not really a public speaker so please bear with me.” What they’re doing is giving themselves an out. “If I don’t do well, nobody can blame me because I warned them.” They essentially take the pressure off themselves by their self-denigrations. But not Ali. When he went out there with bluster and cockiness, he set himself up to have to perform. He is known to have said, “I said I was the greatest before I even knew I was,” and I’ll bet that he only became the greatest because he said it so much. There are a couple of reasons for that. First of all, a positive outlook creates success. When you see negativity ahead of you, and failure is an option, then

failure really becomes an option. When you don’t let failure in the door, you’re much more likely to keep it away. However, the more you repeat positive words, the more you will believe them. Your mazel will improve and valuable energy normally wasted on worry is freed up to achieve your goals. Then there’s the fact that when you make a public statement, you don’t want to look foolish. If you say you’re the greatest and then you lose, you’re proven to be a liar, or at very least someone out of touch with reality. Not wanting to be embarrassed is a powerful motivator. I’ve heard from R’ Benzion Shafier, of “The Shmuz” fame, that Muhammad Ali said that when you see a boxer lying on the floor as the referee counts to ten, it’s because he’s lost the will to stand up. Part of maintaining that determination not to be beaten is to care about your honor and make such outlandish claims that you’re more afraid of the embarrassment than of the physical challenge you have to face. I think these messages are so important for all of us who go through life battling the yetzer hara each day. If we dress as a Jew, we

should be mortified for our mode of dress to be contradicted by our speech or our actions. Can you imagine how ridiculous it would look for a man in a yarmulke to use foul language or stare at an inappropriate billboard on the street? How about a

twice before we do it ourselves even when we have a good reason or excuse. The idea is that if we want to stay at the top of our game, we need to keep repeating to ourselves and the Evil Inclination that we are G-d-fearing Jews. Only

The more you repeat positive words, the more you will believe them.

woman with her hair covered, her clothing modest, and she sits on the phone sharing gossip with her friends as if it were a mitzvah? By constantly telling ourselves how good and decent and passionate about Torah and mitzvos we are, we reinforce that message within ourselves. By making statements out loud, either verbally or via our manner of dress, we set ourselves up for major embarrassment if we don’t live up to our persona. Want another example? If we tell someone about the importance of coming to shul on time or of being calm and not yelling at your children, then we will think

then do we have a shot at remaining (almost) undefeated champs.

Between the Lines

Choose Your Own Adventure By Eytan Kobre

Life is the sum of all your choices. - Albert Camus

M

y son recently was reading Return to Atlantis, one of those Choose-Your-OwnAdventure books. Written from a second-person point of view, the reader assumes the role of the protagonist and makes choices that determine the outcome of the character and the plot. Apparently, rather than discovering untold riches, my son’s character met an untimely demise and was vaporized. When I asked my son if he was disappointed, he shook his head “no” and explained that he subsequently perused all the alternate endings and simply chose the one that had his character ruling the world. All’s well that ends well, I guess. Life, however, is not so simple. When Balak first asked Bilam to curse the Jewish people, G-d warned Bilam not to join Balak (Bamidbar 22:12). But, curiously, G-d told Bilam just a short while later, “Arise and go with them” (Bamidbar 22:20). What changed?

Nothing. G-d gives us the prescription for life, telling us what to do and what not to do. But G-d also gives us the power of choice, and He won’t stop us from making our own choices, however misguided they may be. G-d didn’t want Bilam to curse the Jewish people, but Bilam remained resolute in his desire to join Balak, and G-d would not stand in his way. In the end, Bilam’s own choices led him down a path of destruction – hung by his own petard, as it were – confirming that “a person is led down the path he wishes to go down” (Makos 10b; Bamidbar Rabba 20:12; see Tosfos, Shabbos 87a; Tosfos, Yevamos 62a). G-d gives us choices, and He won’t stand in the way of them, whatever the consequences. And, ultimately, we become the products of our own choices. Indeed, “every person has the ability to do good or bad; as such, the one who sins hurts himself… know that it is in your control and you will ultimately be required to give an accounting [of your own choices]” (Rambam, Teshuva 5:1-4). In that sense, we don’t just make our choices – we are

our choices. As a Danny Devito character once opined, “The choices we make dictate the lives we lead.” When Akavya ben Mehalel was on his deathbed, his son asked him for a recommendation letter so that the other sages of the time would accept him among their ranks (Ediyos 5:7). Akavya refused. “Ma’asecha yekarvucha u’maasecha yerachkucha,” he told his son. Your actions will bring you close, and your actions will distance you. You future is in your hands. Your choices and your actions will determine your fate. 1,500 years later, a man asked R’ Yehonasan Eybeshutz for a letter of approbation to bring to the Vilna Gaon to gain the latter’s approval. R’ Yehonasan wrote the letters “mem” and “yud” on each side of a piece of paper, folded it in half, and handed it to the man, who was puzzled but too daunted to ask for an explanation. Upon receiving the man and review the letter, the Vilna Gaon smiled knowingly. “Your master’s letter is short on words but long on substance. The letters stand for Maasecha Yekarvucha and Maasecha Yerachku-

cha. A most apt approbation. Because it is indeed your actions and your choices that will determine your standing here.” Many parents have a remarkable penchant for divorcing the choices they make for their children from the nearly-inevitable outcomes of those choices. They send their children to unsuitable schools and camps, permit them to associate with toxic friends, and tolerate their unbecoming behavior. But when the child becomes the product of these choices, the parents express shock and horror. Too often, as parents, we forget that our children largely are the products of our choices. A father once bemoaned to the Chofetz Chaim that his son had grown wayward in his late teens and early twenties. “You were the one who sent him away to the morally-corrosive and secular university in Berlin,” the Chofetz Chaim retorted. “What did you think was going to happen?” The sinning process is described as “the eyes see, the heart desires, and the body acts” (Rashi, Bamidbar 15:39; Tanchuma, Bamidbar 15). Yet the Torah warns us not to “wander after your

hearts and after your eyes” – the heart first and then the eyes – because even before the eyes see, the heart already has decided whether to look (Malbim, Bamidbar 15:39). By the time you are ready to look and consider your options, you’ve already made the decision. As my wife chides me when I consider cheating on a diet, “You’ve already decided to cheat; the only question now is pizza or hamburgers.” Indeed, this underpins the very notion of reward and punishment. Once G-d gave us the commandments, “no longer does bad and good emanate from Him; rather, the good deeds and the sins choose their own [outcomes]...it all depends on your actions” (Ha’amek Davar, Devarim 11:26). Reward and punishment are found in the acts themselves. Contrary to popular mores, reward and punishment are not strictly external manifestations of G-d’s perfect justice; often, rather, they are simply the natural consequences of our own actions. (Perhaps this explains why “the reward for a good deed is a good deed, and the reward for a sin is sin” (Avos 4:2).) Consider the smoker who develops lung cancer or

The challenge, in short, is to lead lives that embody Eleanor Roosevelt’s observation that “I am who I am today because of the choices I made yesterday.” largely are the product of poor life choices. And that is precisely why we must recognize that today’s choices dictate tomorrow’s reality. Shown the verdant mountain Gerizim and the barren mountain Eval, we were challenged to make a stark choice: “See, I am set-

Wow. Tough choice. Blessing or curse? Hmmm. I think I’ll take blessing. What’s the catch? The catch was that G-d wanted an answer “today.” Yet he used the visual of Gerizim and Eval – mountains far from where the Jewish people stood at the time. How

to see them? How could the Jewish people have been expected to make such a momentous decision “today”? And there’s the rub. Of course blessing trumps curse. It always does. That’s no challenge. The challenge is what we do today. The challenge is in living a life that recognizes that our

choices today decide our tomorrow. The challenge is to make the right choices even when it is not crystal clear which choices are right. The challenge, in short, is to lead lives that embody Eleanor Roosevelt’s observation that “I am who I am today because of the choices I made yesterday.” * * * Life is an unending succession of forks in the road. G-d affords us the privilege and opportunity of choice for our benefit (Michtav M’Eliyahu, Vol. V, pg. 160). He urges us to make the right choices – not because of what He does with our wrong choices but because of what we become from our wrong choices. In the frenzy of everyday life, the correlation between

53

today’s choices and tomorrow’s consequences is not always readily discernible. Sometimes we get so caught up in being the “chosen” people that we forget that, at our core, we are the “choosing” people – a people that strives to distinguish ourselves on the basis of the choices we make today, and our understanding of the impact those choices will have on tomorrow. As for which choices to make? That adventure is up to you.

A Fulfilled L fe

Submitting to a Higher Will By Rabbi Naphtali Hoff

Part I

T

he three week period which commence with the seventeenth of Tammuz and conclude after the ninth of Av has historically been a difficult time for Klal Yisrael. The Gemara (Ta’anis 26a-b) informs us that five misfortunes befell our ancestors on each of those dates. On the seventeenth of Tammuz, the luchos were broken, the daily sacrifice was discontinued (shortly before Churban bayis sheni), a breach was made in the city (the wall around the Har Habayis was breached on that same date), Apustamus (a Greek officer during the second commonwealth) burnt a Torah scroll or scrolls, and placed an idolatrous image in the heichal. On the ninth of Av it was decreed that (Bnei Yisrael) should not enter the (Promised) Land (for forty additional years, following the incident of the meraglim), both batei mikdash were destroyed, Beitar was captured (following the failed revolt of Bar Kochva), and Yerushalayim was plowed up. From the Torah’s perspective, it certainly cannot be considered coincidental that all of these tragic events occurred during this particular period, and specifically on these dates. Surely, Hashem intended to relay an important message to us. In order to understand this message, let us examine the explanations

of Chazal for the destruction of each bais hamikdash. Why was the first sanctuary destroyed? Because of three (evil) things that prevailed there: idolatry, immorality, and bloodshed… But why was the second sanctuary destroyed, since in that time they were occupying themselves with Torah, (observance of) mitzvos, and the practice of charity? At that time causeless hatred (sin’as chinam) prevailed. That teaches you that causeless hatred is considered of equal gravity with the three sins of idolatry, immorality, and bloodshed together. (Yoma 9b) It is noteworthy that despite their active violation of the three cardinal sins of idolatry, immorality, and bloodshed, those who lived during the first commonwealth were still collectively on a significantly higher spiritual level than their successors. It was they, not their successors, who merited an open revelation of Hashem’s presence. In five areas the first Bais HaMikdash differed from the second: in the aron, the kapores (aron-cover), the keruvim (the first three are considered as one), the fire, the Shechina, the spirit of prophecy, and the urim v’tumim. (Yoma 21b) More importantly, they were forced to endure a much shorter exile (70 years to nearly two millennia), and knew from the outset as to how long their exile would last. The former ones whose iniquity was revealed (by not hiding their misdeeds) had their end revealed

(through prophecy); the latter ones whose iniquity was not revealed have their end still unrevealed. (Yoma 9b) The obvious question is why is that so? After all, how can the three cardinal sins for which one is required to give up his life rather than violate (yehareig v’al ya’avor – see Sanhedrin 74a) be only equal to (or perhaps even better than) the transgression of sin’as chinam? I would like to suggest two possible approaches to answer this question. One is based on the idea that sin’as chinam really is not a graver sin than the “big three”. The reason as to why it brought upon the current, seemingly endless golus was the fact that it destroyed the communal framework necessary to overcome our personal deficiencies, leaving us susceptible to the rigors of individual assessment. The same idea can be observed regarding the two sinful generations of antiquity, the eras of Noach and Nimrod. The people of each period were punished severely for their respective misdeeds (deluge and dispersion). However, when one considers the nature of each one’s primary cheit, Nimrod’s generation emerges as the more decadent of the two. While the people of Noach’s time were wicked to each other (“And the world was filled with violence (I.e. theft)” – Bereishis 6:11), those from Nimrod’s time actually rebelled against Hashem Himself! (See Rashi to Bereishis 11:1) Still, it was the for-

mer, rather than the latter, which was completely annihilated. Rashi explains why this was the case. Now which (sins) were worse, those of the generation of the flood or those of the generation of the dispersion? The former did not stretch forth their hands against Hashem, whereas the latter did stretch forth their hands against Hashem, to wage war against Him. Nevertheless, the former were drowned, while the latter did not perish from the world. (The reason for this) is because the generation of the flood was comprised of robbers and there was strife between them, and therefore they were destroyed. But these behaved with love and friendship among themselves… How hateful is strife and how great is peace! (Rashi to Bereishis 11:9, quoting Bereishis Rabbah 38:6) Despite the fact that they were, as a whole, less sinful than the generation of dispersion, Noach’s generation was completely destroyed. The reason for this was because they failed to foster the requisite degree of love, peace and harmony with each other. Conversely, the dor haflaga excelled in this area. As a result, they were not destroyed, despite their sinful, rebellious nature. Israel Today

Gadna By Rafi Sackville

G

adna is a pre-army program designed to ready high school students for their impending army service. The word Gadna is an abbreviation for “youth battalions.” It was originally created by the Haganah, which eventually became known as Zahal, or the IDF. Gadna was established into law soon after independence in 1948. The program used to be an amalgam of military training, the teaching of Zionist history, and the promotion of the love of the Land of Israel. Today it is a four day program of discipline and military training. The intense program has traditionally been offered to 11th graders. The army recently changed this policy and has been experimenting with 10th graders. There were moments when the army thought they’d made the wrong decision. For while, not blatantly pronounced, the difference between 10th and 11th graders can have a lot to do with listening, particularly to authority. Because we were given only two weeks’ notice, there was not much time to prepare. Provided with four homeroom lessons to teach, we barely managed two. One was quite novel; the army is renowned for its use of abbreviations, many of which have become part of Israeli everyday speech. The idea was to teach as many pertinent abbreviations as possible. One lesson the army particularly wanted us to teach concerned interaction between schools, for the army base usually accommodates three, sometimes four, schools at once. Last year there was a fracas between two schools which resulted in all students being sent home. The physical transformation of our students not more than an hour after their arrival was remarkable. It took an adjustment seeing one’s stu-

dents dressed in uniform. There is something healthy and leveling about khaki that rids what might otherwise be material differences and disappears it behind baggy shirts and loose fitting pants. There they were already lined up in parade and standing at attention. The presence of teachers is superfluous. Our job is to wander around, take photos, and intervene on the chance there are problems. The young officers particularly request we don’t stand in front of them as it is off putting. My students are thrilled to see me and pose for photos that I send their parents. I’m surprised there’s less dissent among them. The resentment so many of them have against authority doesn’t exist here like it does in school. Most are pliant and willing. Their young officers wield more authority than teachers. That said, the fifteen students who declined to spend the four days away from home are the very ones who would have looked at the officers here with disdain and disrespect. There is one student who cries she wants to leave one moment and then can be found smiling among her friends the next. Like a child in a playground seeking her mother, she eyes me, lowers her jowls and demands to be taken home. By whom, I ask her? Teachers aren’t permitted to take students home. “But my parents can’t pick me up” (we’re half an hour away from Ma’alot). Then you’ll have to stay here, I calmly retort. This riles her. She cries. Our circular conversation is at an end and off she huffs until the next bout of pouting. Yet survive, she does. Most of the officers are girls in their early twenties, whose constant bark of quick command is as prevalent as students counting backwards from twenty as they lurch from exercise to exercise. And count down they

do...all day long. Sometimes they start at 5, or 10, but 20 is the most popular countdown number. They learn how to use guns which excites them to no end. More than anything else this had been the subject of their chatter before we left for Gadna: would they or would they not be allowed to fire live ammunition. There is a slight hitch in proceedings when the heavens open which makes the trek and use of the rifle range less than conducive to use, but the sun finally shines through and we line up outside the range after lunch. Student cameras are strictly off limits, but teachers are permitted to take photos. They request we take

in a special program designed to help their academic and social integration. His presence at Gadna was a psychological boost for them. In two years they will join the army and make wonderful soldiers, who will proudly serve our country. Relatively speaking they outshone the other ninety students. It is frustrating to note that their excellence in outdoor activities is not reflected in their achievements in school. After over a dozen years teaching in New York, I tend to feel that Gadna would have been a helpful tool to put some of my wayward students on the straight and narrow. There on an army base in the middle of some-

They learn how to use guns which excites them to no end. photos of them holding guns, a request which is repeated over and over. In particular they want photos of themselves while they’re on their stomachs firing. The last day ends with a ceremony that culminates in the presentation of awards to outstanding students. Presented by the officers, who had remained nameless until now, they reveal their names and call out the recipients of the awards. Readers will recall that I am a homeroom teacher to a very special class of youth at risk. Six of my students took the leap and participated in the course. I was thrilled to watch four of them receive various awards for excellence, including for most outstanding soldier. Ori, shown in the accompanying photo, was once considered a student at risk. Today he works exclusively with my students

where in verdant Galil my students couldn’t call in sick, couldn’t go home, and couldn’t not turn up to exercises. They were locked into a regimen that began at the crack of dawn and didn’t end until way after nightfall. I know many people, even some adults, that could do with a course like Gadna. I am optimistic and confident our students will make worthy soldiers when their time comes to serve. For all the classroom shenanigans we suffer at school I have seen past students just like them return on Yom HaZikaron, standing proudly at the flag ceremony, mature beyond their years. Their rite of passage is so different from that of children in chutz la’aretz. It’s part of what makes Israel so resilient. Rafi Sackville, formerly of Cedarhurst, teaches in Ort Maalot in Western Galil.

THIS WEEK, WE’RE TALKING TO…

Avnet Country Day School How are the Five Towns’ youngest residents spending their summer? Over the next few weeks, we’ll be speaking to different day camps to learn how their campers are spending their 12 weeks of summer vacation.

AVNET COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL IS NOT ONLY ONE OF THE LARGEST CAMPS IN THE FIVE TOWNS, BUT A CAMP THAT OPERATES ON TWO MAJOR CAMPUSES. THIS WEEK, WE SPOKE WITH DIRECTORS JEREMY FINE, WHO LEADS THE WOODMERE BRANCH, AND DANIEL STROOCK, WHO HEADS THE LONG BEACH BRANCH.

Thank you both for taking of your time. Camp is rocking, and we know that you’re busy making sure that all your 800 campers are smiling and having a great time. Daniel, you are the director of the Long Beach campus. Can you tell us about your campers? Daniel: We have approximately 650 children on our Long Beach campus this year. Avnet in Long Beach is for boys from ages 3 through entering 3rd grade as well as for girls from age 3 through entering 8th grade. After 8th grade, boys and girls can serve as CIT’s and we are proud to say, that many of our former campers return to work for us. Our camper population is extraordinarily diverse. Of course many HALB kids attend Avnet, but we also draw campers from YCQ, Shulamith, TAG, South Shore, YKLI, HANC, HAFTR and Har Torah that want to join in for the summer fun.

That sounds like a lot of children to supervise. How are the divisions divided? Daniel: We have four divisions. Our preschool, which we call Tipot, is led by Roni Shetrit. We have two divisions for first through third grade; Ma’ayanot Boys led by Moshe Spern and Ma’ayanot Girls led by Yael Greenberger. Our oldest division, which we refer to as Agamim and is led by Ariana Wolfson, experienced remarkable growth this year. While we are proud to have higher enrollment across all divisions, the Agamim in particular has experienced a growth of over 40%! Amongst other things, that increase can be attributed to the incredible Agamim trip schedule. They are scheduled for a trip to Hershey Park this week and they have already gone to see Wicked on Broadway! Our Program Director, Rabbi Nartan Farber, makes sure each group has an amazing activity to go to at any given time. This year we brought

Chani Weisfeld on board to inject even more energy into our Special Events Programming, and so far, with the help of her assistant Jordan Veg, she has done just that. Last week they ran the Avnet Amazing Race after which the parent phone calls and emails poured in with remarks of appreciation and thanks because their children enjoyed it so much! Malkie Behar runs our office all year round and she has a phenomenal ability to know and remember almost every Avnet family and what their particular needs may be. We begin each morning with an upper staff meeting which is an opportunity to discuss how things have been going, chat about improvements we would like to make, and focus on the special events of that day. Jeremy, tell us about the boys having a blast on the Woodmere campus. Jeremy: This year, we have 150 fourth grade through eighth grade

Excitin Camp Fe g ature! BACK F O THIRD R A YEAR! boys on the Woodmere campus. The boys are from all over – HALB, of course, South Shore, HANC, YCQ, YKLI, Har Torah, Yeshiva Darchei Torah, HAFTR, Ashar, MDS, and public school as well. With the help from all of our staff, we create a warm and friendly environment, which enables all the campers from different backgrounds to blend together so well. I know it isn’t Pesach now, but what makes Avnet different from all the other camps? Daniel: We began our staff orientation by pointing out to every one of our employees that parents have entrusted to us that which is absolutely most precious to them. And therein lies an enormous privilege and responsibility that we must FOCUS ON EVERY DETAIL! That’s the best way to keep every kid safe and happy. Our programming is spectacular as well, and that’s a draw for the kids. Crazy Hat Day is an enormously special day when the entire campus gathers together to show and celebrate their creativity and pride. It’s the kind of event that provides lifelong memories in the kids’ minds. Jeremy: I believe it is that mix of backgrounds I was referring to earlier. No matter which yeshiva or school one goes to, everyone is focused on the positive aspects of each other, we can all learn from each

other. When the boys come to camp, there is an achdus in the air which spills into all the activities. This summer we have added new programs and activities to our already existing top of the line sports leagues, run by HALB’s third grade Rebbi, Rabbi Werner. Following the craze of American Ninja Warrior, we built our very own obstacle course on campus that challenges the boys to become an Avnet Ninja Warrior. Since we feel strongly about each child being an individual and focusing on their own improvements, this activity is the perfect fit. Each time a camper attempts the course, he is aware of his previous time and challenges himself to do better the next time. Another new feature is our Sports Clinics and Avnet Adventure Program. The Sports Clinics, run by successful coaches from our Jewish community, includes Basketball, Hockey, and Softball. The boys have the privilege of being guided and taught by YU coach, Elliot Steinmetz; DRS coach and rebbi, Rabbi Steven Genachowski; and MAY coach and YIW youth leader, Zachary Kessler. Who knows? One day these

campers might play for these coaches – it never hurts to get a head start! Our Avnet Adventure Program is run by Rabbi Mordechai Picker. He has a lot of experience working with kids in many different camps, both day camps and sleepaway camp. This program has offered a change of pace for many boys who need something other than sports all day, every day. The boys are learning about camping and survival, that includes knot tying, fire safety, the miraculous “space” of Altoid tin boxes, and the many uses of a para cord. Ever hear of Knockerball? If not, I am sure you will be well familiar with it after this summer. Our campers were raving about this activity as one of the best yet and can’t stop talking about it. The boys were strapped into bouncy bubbles as they rolled, bumped, and collided their way through an unforgettable experience. And we cannot leave out the new and improved softball jerseys – we are known for them! Each team has their own sponsor and colors, giving the softball league as much of a professional feel as possible. Our Head Counselor, Rabbi Yeshaya Samet, always brings new and exciting activities and programs

to our campus. This past week we had a “Master Chef” competition. Campers competed by using interesting ingredients to make varieties of meatballs, sushi, lasagna and cupcakes. (I tried them all!) This is another example of using the campers’ different talents and making it count. Their mothers must love that! Jeremy: That’s not the only thing they love. We know that both the campers and their parents appreciate a longer day, that is why we have many of them spread out throughout the summer. For Late Nights, we take our campers to the Long Beach campus where they can use the pools and play sports on the beach. Other nights we host an NBA player for sports clinics and autographs or attend a Yankee-Blue Jay game. We are also sending our oldest boys in the 8th grade for an extended day at the Long Island Adventure Park ropes course. Our Chinuch program is also very goal oriented. We want the boys to have a feeling of accomplishment when they learn. Each age group has been assigned a Perek(im) in Meseches Avos and according to their level of learning, have been delving into the lessons and applications of the Mishna. At the end of the summer, parents will be invited to join in as the campers are mesayem (finishing) Pirkei Avos. The event will have

live music and will be a big, fun celebration. Daniel: I would describe the Long Beach program as a great balance. We offer an amazingly wide array of activities so the children who love sports will get plenty of league games and clinics. But we are not just a sports camp; there’s something for everyone among our long list of specialties: Art, Wood Shop, Zumba, Chinuch, Country Cooking, Music, Boot Camp, Karate, and so much more! As a matter of fact, some of our campers get to choose an activity in which they would like to “major.” Many girls chose to major in chessed and visit the nearby Grandell Rehabilitation Center. I was super pleased and proud of the interest in that particular major. The turnout was so great that we actually had to break the girls into two teams so that some girls could visit while others made cards for the residents. We will be introducing something brand new, this coming week, G-d willing. I don’t want to go into too much detail but I can tell you that it’s an incentive system that we’ve never used before but we believe will generate enormous excitement amongst the kids. To us, camp is an extension of the educational process of the school year and this will provide an opportunity for the kids to really focus on their achievements over the summer and feel pride in what they have accomplished.

Our swimming program is fantastic! We have three pools. Two of them are heated and the kids love to swim. During the Nine Days, we participate in the Chai Lifeline Swim-a-thon. The campers swim laps to generate funds which we donate to Chai Lifeline. For the past few years, we’ve raised over $15,000!

That’s really impressive! Jeremy, where do the boys in Woodmere swim? Jeremy: We go swimming at Swim and Scuba. It is a nearby facility that offers the benefit of swimming even when it rains because of its indoor feature. There’s a diving board and volleyball net in the pool which the boys love to use during free swim. It sounds like there’s a lot of fun going on on campus. What about trips off-grounds? Daniel: Well, I mentioned Wicked, which the girls loved, and Hershey Park. We go to Funstation, Adventureland, and the boys go to a Cyclones game. We send campers to Bounce and many other attractions. Every week, the preschool division and the girls go to All American Gymnastics in Oceanside, and the boys regularly go bowling. One of the highlights of my day is greeting the kids in the morning as the buses roll in and I invariably get to hear exciting declarations

about the day’s trips. Jeremy: We go on super trips. We are very careful to plan age appropriate trips. For example, on Thursday the 21st, the younger boys (4th and 5th grade) are going to play laser tag, while the older campers (6th, 7th, and 8th) are going go-kart racing. In a couple of weeks, the younger bunks will go fishing; the older ones will be paintballing. The entire camp already had a blast at Six Flags Great Adventure. In August, we have our three day Avnet Mesorah Experience. It is the perfect overnight for boys not yet ready for sleep away camp or with no experience. The boys will go to an unfamiliar place with familiar people, namely their current counselors, head counselors and friends that they have learned to trust. Wow! That sounds like a lot of fun! It seems like Avnet is a great mix of fun, friends and “fabulousness”! Enjoy the rest of the summer. Jeremy: It is! We have been so excited to hear the feedback from our campers and parents, telling us how much they love the program and are in general having a fun summer. Thank you for that, it means a lot and we value it.

Health & F tness

The Not-So-Sweet Truth about Added Sugars By Aliza Beer MS, RD

W

hether you are trying to shed weight or are just trying to maintain a healthier lifestyle, you probably are doing your best to steer clear of too much sugar. This is definitely a wise decision because excess sugar in our diets has been linked to obesity, dental cavities, heart disease, type-2 diabetes and many other chronic diseases. However, we must ask ourselves if we actually know how much sugar we consume on a daily basis. Most of us are probably consuming more sugar than we think and added sugars are to blame. Added sugars are the syrups and sugars that are added to many foods or beverages during production. These added sugars contain no nutritional value and simply add calories. Unfortunately, sugar is added to many different food and drink products and not just the “obvious ones.” So while you may not be eating cookies or gulping down bottles of soda, you are likely consuming sugar from other hidden sources that you would never have guessed contain added sugar. Yogurts, breads, condiments, sauces, energy bars, cereals, granola, and salad dressings are just some of the common foods that have sugars added to them. Leading brands of tomato sauce, such as Francesco Rinal-

di, have 11 grams of sugar in ½ a cup. Due to tomato sauce generally being added to foods such as pasta or bread (which are loaded carb sources), one could leave that meal with their blood sugar seriously spiked. Even these loaded carb sources, such as bread and wraps, often contain added sugar and not just the white flour options. Many whole grain wraps, English

“healthy” muffin can have up to 30 grams of added sugar! One also may find the latest “gluten free, whole grain, natural” cookies, which are also loaded with added sugars. Some leading brands of yogurt can have up to 22 grams of sugar in it while a serving a fat-free granola can have 19 grams of added sugar! In fact, Stonyfield’s organic, fat free vanilla yogurt has 25

The problem is that there are close to 60 different names for sugar. Most of us are unfamiliar with some of sugar’s aliases making it difficult to recognize how much sugar is actually in the food. Many people see a whole list of ingredients and assume that “sugar” is just one component making up an entire product of food. Manufacturers, however, will use all the different

In fact, Stonyfield’s organic, fat free vanilla yogurt has 25 grams of sugar. This amount of sugar is actually comparable to that of a candy bar!

muffins, and breads contain added sugars (up to 18 grams in some!) to enhance flavor. Low fat foods are another major source of added sugars to boost the flavor of the food. Another item that sneaks in the added sugars are “natural” muffins and cookies. Sometimes a bakery will boast of its “naturally sweetened” muffin, which is sweetened with honey. But this is just another way of saying sugar since honey is broken down in the body the same exact way as sugar. Also, more often than not these muffins are sold in jumbo size, so besides for the high calorie count an entire

grams of sugar. This amount of sugar is actually comparable to that of a candy bar! A Reese’s peanut butter cup bar contains 21 grams of sugar, which is less than many of these listed “healthy” foods. No matter where the sugar is coming from, your blood sugar and insulin levels spikes. Shockingly, close to ¾ of the packaged foods in supermarkets contain added sugars. So how are we consumers overlooking this? The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires food manufacturers to list all of the ingredients that are put in their products.

types of added sugars in the food and list them under their different names so we do not realize just how many of those ingredients are actually just sugar. Some of these include: agave, barley malt, beet sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, caramel, corn syrup, dextrin, high fructose corn syrup, honey, and molasses. In addition, anything listed in the nutrition fact label that ends in ‘ose’ is a sugar. Think fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, sucralose, and dextrose. By breaking up the amount of sugar from “20 grams of sugar” into “5 grams of fructose,” “10 grams of malt syrup,” and

“5 grams of sucrose,” companies are able to place these added sugars – which add up to a lot – lower on the ingredients list because ingredients are listed in decreasing weight order. Thus, it does not take pouring the 10 packs of sugar into your morning coffee to consume a substantial amount of added sugar. But if added sugars are in so many foods, how can one avoid it? Knowing how to spot these added sugars allows you to make healthier dietary choices. Try to buy pure whole grain bread, like Ezekiel bread or whole wheat or spelt matzah, to avoid consuming the added sugar. Additionally, by sticking to whole, natural foods that are not filled with added sugar, such as fruits (which contain only a small amount of natural sugar), vegetables, and fresh produce, you will be significantly lowering your intake of unnecessary sugars. By recognizing and limiting these added sugars, we can cut down on calories and improve our health in the long run. Aliza Beer is a registered dietician with a master’s degree in nutrition. Dr. Deb

You’re in Control By Deb Hirschhorn, Ph.D.

W

ho’s in control? Well, we know for certain that Hashem runs the world. But there is one area where He has relinquished control and that is your freedom to choose what to think. And that is the difference that makes all the difference in the world. That difference is the key to your happiness. No matter what happens. Viktor Frankl wrote about it in his iconic book on his firsthand experiences in the Holocaust, Man’s Search For Meaning: “We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way. “And there were always choices to make. Every day, every hour, offered the op-

portunity to make a decision, a decision which determined whether you would or would not submit to those powers which threatened to rob you of your very self, your inner freedom… “Even though conditions such as lack of sleep, insufficient food and various mental stresses may suggest that the inmates were bound to react in certain ways, in the final analysis it becomes clear that the sort of person the prisoner became was the result of an inner decision, and not the result of camp influences alone. Fundamentally, therefore, any man can, even under such circumstances, decide what shall become of him – mentally and spiritually” (p. 86-87, Washington Square Press, 1984 edition). Don’t get me wrong. As a doctor treating typhoid patients in the camps, he too became desensitized to death and pain. He could watch corpses being dragged out of the sick hut and then go back to eating his thin soup. But there are two things

he chose: 1. Don’t give up hope for the future. 2. Don’t give up my own humanity. How do you do that when death is certain? Frankl tells the story of a choice he was given: He could stay in the camp where he was or move to another camp where he would be treating the sick. He reasoned that since he was almost certain to die one way or another, he would at least feel like he did something useful by treating the sick before he, himself, would die. Perhaps this is the meaning of the pasuk from Aishes Chayil that “she joyfully awaits the last day.” The Rebbe of the Warsaw Ghetto, in his book, explains that she knows she served G-d faithfully. But perhaps it means even more: That she was tested and tried in many ways to lose her humanity and her faith – and still she did not. I remember when I was in college I called an older relative, Cousin Florence,

who was dying of cancer. I wanted to give her some words of kindness as best I could. Instead, she shocked me by asking me how I was! How were my studies going? What classes did I like? Who was taking care of whom, here? But even if I were to rationalize her thinking and say it was a great way to take her mind off of herself, the fact remains that she chose a way to do it that was completely unselfish. So did she lose hope? Well, she knew she was terminal. But she had hope to live the few days she had remaining with kindness and dignity. She made that choice and then she lived them that way. Perhaps that even made her smile.

NEUROSCIENCE

In the big debate over whether medications for depression are helpful, nowhere do advocates of medication assert that the anti-depressants will change a person’s thinking. To them, this doesn’t matter. They believe that your thoughts are gloomy because of the chem-

icals swirling in your brain. Actually, our Torah suggests otherwise: Our feelings come from our thoughts. This is what Frankl is saying and this is what the founders of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy are saying – Aaron T. Beck who wrote the eponymous book and Albert Ellis who wrote A Guide To Rational Living. “You Feel the Way You Think” is Ellis’ title for Chapter 2 of his book. You might be wondering if the thought comes first and the feeling comes later, where the chemicals in the brain come in. The answer, of course, is that they are brought on by the feelings; they go along with the feelings. There is a fascinating field called Social Neuroendocrinology. This field usually studies how hormones affect behavior, but in the last 10 years, it has also been looking at how behavior affects hormones. An interesting study on this concluded that testosterone has a bi-directional effect on aggressive behavior. That is, the behavior induces the se-

control our feelings because we can control our thoughts – or how much we want to invest in them – has been picked up with gusto by

person is to recognize that we may have a head full of thoughts but we don’t have to chase after them. That is, we don’t have to create a

ally neutral and safe. (Deep breathing also is associated with reduced blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones.)

She knew she was terminal. But she had hope to live the few days she had remaining with kindness and dignity.

contemporary society in the adoption of mindfulness meditation. That discipline puts all feelings and thoughts into the category of things we can create and can latch onto and worry about – or not. In the practice of meditation, a

train of thought, one leading to another. Instead, we can simply note the thought and distance ourselves from it; let it go by. By focusing on our breathing as we do this, it gives our mind something to attend to that is emotion-

The key to this practice, however, is the understanding that neither our thoughts nor our emotions need to control us; we can control them simply by where we focus our attention. As Eve Eliot put it so well, “An unpeaceful mind is the source

of an unpeaceful mind” (Annals of the American Psychotherapy Association, Winter, 2006). This all makes perfect sense when it is considered in the context of the total freedom that Hashem gave us to choose what to think. This means that we also have the freedom to choose how to feel, even under – or perhaps especially under – the worst of circumstances. Given how very little is under our control in this life, the fact that we can control our attitude about it is the difference in how we live it. Dr. Deb Hirschhorn is a Marriage and Family Therapist. cretion of testosterone and the testosterone in turn creates more aggression. Even more unexpectedly, when fathers decide to – and then do – participate in the care of their infants, oxytocin and prolactin, the “bonding hormones” normally secreted in new and nursing mothers, are found in the fathers’ blood! That is, while nature gives mothers a boost by secreting these hormones automatically, the actions of the fathers will change their blood chemistry. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is how grandparent bonding works, or for that matter, the bonding of adoptive parents with their new infants.

Turmoil in Turkey Erdogan on a Tear after Failed Coup By Susan Schwamm

W

hen it comes to global events, the words Pennsylvania and Turkey have probably never been in the same sentence before last weekend. What does the northeast state of Pennsylvania – a blue collar state with a penchant for smashmouth football – have in common with the Middle-Eastern country of Turkey – a place where smashmouth Islam and secularism are in an ever-present tug-of-war for control? Until last weekend, not much. But after the attempted coup last Friday in Turkey, its president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is pointing his finger at one resident of Pennsylvania as the driving force behind the coup. Although the standoff in Turkey was quickly quashed, the next standoff may be with a much more powerful foe: The United States of America.

An Imam in Pennsylvania

Fethullah Gulen, 75, lives a secluded lifestyle on a 26-acre gated property in the Pocono Mountains of Saylorsburg, PA. Gulen is the reclusive leader of the Gulen movement, a sect of Islam known as “Hizmet,” which means service. Until he went into self-imposed exile in 1999, Gulen was a prominent imam in Turkey. He practices what is considered to be a moderate brand of Sunni Islam, which embraces modernity. His philosophy not only gained him ardent followers, but blossomed into a powerful movement in Turkey which operates despite him being 6,000 miles away. The Gulen movement claims to support democracy, globalization, and progressiveness and prides itself in integrating tradition with modernity. It has millions of followers in Turkey and addresses

many of Turkey’s social problems through its schools, hospitals, banks and media outlets. It operates secular schools not only in Turkey but throughout the world. In fact, in the United States, the Gulen Movement is the biggest operator of chartered schools. For years, members of the Gulen Movement have been active in Turkish bureaucracies and have played a role in the police and judiciary. However, not everyone believes that Gulen and his followers are really moderates. Many suspect that they only practice a moderate form of Islam in order to fly beneath the radar of the secularist Turkish laws. Since the Ottoman Empire collapsed after World War I, Turkey’s official ideology has been secularism. Its judiciary and military worked hand-in-hand to eradicate religious Islam from Turkish society. Even so,

it’s not surprising that in a country where 98% of the population is Muslim, a large segment of the population continued to support Islamism, a belief that all aspects of social and government life shall be guided by Sharia and the laws of Islam. Over the past eighty years, numerous Islamist parties arose, but they were repeatedly banned by the courts or overrun by military coups. One of those was the Welfare Party, founded in 1983. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was a young member of that party; it was banned by law in 1998. Despite the radical secularism which clamped down on any form of Islamism, the Gulen Movement was allowed to operate and grow. Its members were even able to secure key government positions. Their way of avoiding the secularists, many believe, was by flying beneath the radar and coming across as human-

ists, rather than Islamists. Gulen once instructed his followers: “You must move within the arteries of the system, without anyone noticing your existence, until you reach all the power centers … You must wait until such time as you have got all the state power, until you have brought to your side all the power of the constitutional institution in Turkey.” Gulen may have just been a smarter Islamist than his predecessors.

An Islamist Disguised as a Reformer

In 2001, another dynamic leader came along. He, though, was clearly associated with Islamists, although he denied it. Recep Tayyip Erdogan started the Justice and Development Party at the time. The AKP, as the party is commonly called, quickly gained wide popularity through its moderate and pragmatic approach. Although many accused Erdogan of reincarnating an Islamist party disguised as being pro-democratic, Erdogan shrewdly adapted a platform that garnered wide support, even among secularists. He advocated democracy and promised to comply with European Union guidelines in order for Turkey to become a member of that group. This endeared him to secularists who always wanted to be embraced by the West. His promises of reform also earned him the support of the business community as well as the underprivileged. One of Erdogan’s most ardent early supporters, the one who gathered the power of his massive

movement, was Fethullah Gulen. Although the two supposedly had different Islamic ideologies – Erdogan arose from a more hardline view of Islamism – the two had the common interest of defeating the secularists’ stronghold on Turkey. The Gulen Movement also had much to gain by supporting the AKP party’s rise to power because its members would be able to access respectable positions within the bureaucracy. In 2002, Erdogan’s party won the most seats in the parliament and he became the prime minister. Erdogan adopted many of the promised economic policies and reforms necessary to be in compliance with European Union guidelines and actually ushered in an era of economic success. But on the religious front, the AKP began what many believed to be a push toward Islamism. The government lifted bans on females wearing headscarves in schools and reversed numerous other laws which were in place to ensure the secular culture of Turkey. Over time, the largely secular military became weary of the AKP, but they were unable to prevent the shift towards Islamism because on the economic front things were going well and Turkey was actually moving closer towards acceptance into the EU. Then Erdogan began taking steps against the Gulen Movement. In 2013, he shut down many of their schools and closed their newspaper. The Gulenists did not go down without a fight. Gulenist prosecutors sought to expose corruption scandal within the AKP party, which resulted in several AKP ministers being

Gulen in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania

forced to resign and tarnishing Erdogan’s reputation as a reformer. An angry Erdogan then raised the ante and designated the Gulen Movement to be a terrorist organization. Hundreds were then prosecuted over alleged Gulenist links. In December 2014, Erdogan’s government issued an arrest warrant for Fethullah Gulen. But by then Gulen was safely nestled in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains.

Attempted Coup

55 65

Late last Thursday night, as President Erdogen was vacationing in Bodum, word of a military coup spread. Soldiers had taken control of the two main bridges into Istanbul, and fighter jets flew over government buildings in the capital, Ankara. Tanks were deployed near the parliament buildings, and military helicopters circled overhead. The military took control of the state-run TV channel. They broadcast a statement that the military had taken over control of the country because Erdogan had been eroding democracy. They announced a curfew and declared martial law. The reporter who read the statement later said that she was forced to do so at gunpoint. Within a half of an hour of the announcement, Erdogan appeared on TV in a cellphone video from an undisclosed location. He urged the public to take to the streets and said that he was on the way back to Istanbul. He arrived in Istanbul before dawn and addressed thousands of flag-waving supporters outside Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, telling

them that he is in charge and that the coup won’t succeed. “They have pointed the people’s guns against the people,” he said. “They won’t succeed as long as we stand against them by risking everything.” According to military officials, the plotters had tried to attack Erdogan and had bombed places he had been at shortly after he left. Two F16s piloted by coup supporters supposedly even had Erdogan’s planes in sight, but did not fire at it. Officials claim that Erdogan “evaded death by minutes.” By daybreak images appeared on Turkish TV of troops surrendering. Turkish military officials announce that they had taken control of the country. In all, at least 290 died and more than 1,400 were wounded, according to Turkey’s Foreign Ministry.

Roundups Begin

In the immediate aftermath of the failed coup, the soldiers involved were rounded up and stripped, a sign of humiliation. Many soldiers were beaten on the streets by civilians and one was beheaded by a crowd on one of the bridges where the coup started. The Erdogan-controlled police rounded up more than 6,000 people, including many judges and high-ranking generals. Thousands of soldiers and officials from the justice ministry were discharged and 24,000 teachers were fired. Predictably, many of those arrested and fired are associated with the Gulen movement. This purge and the tepidness of the attempted coup leads

many to believe that the upheaval was staged as a pretext to rid the government of Erdogan’s enemies. Erdogan is promising the harshest punishment for those involved in the attempted coup. While at a funeral for his chief advisor’s brother, who was killed in a gun battle while resisting the coup, the crowd greeted Erdogan with chants that they wanted the death penalty – which is banned in Turkey – for the coup perpetrators. Erdogan announced, “We can’t ignore the people’s request in a democracy, this is your right.” At a rally in front of his home he responded to similar chants by saying, “We hear your request. In a democracy, whatever the people want they will get.” He said that he will determine if there is a legal way to dole out the death penalty to the perpetrators and added, “We will not delay this decision for long because those who attempt a coup in this country must pay.” It doesn’t take a Turkish constitutional scholar to conclude that Erdogan will likely find his legal loophole.

Erdogan Guns for Gulen

But Erdogan has made it clear that the real “prize” is Fethullah Gulen himself. As soon as the cloud of the coup lifted, by Saturday morning, and it was clear to all that Erdogan had full control of the government, he began pointing his finger across the Atlantic Ocean at his former-ally-turned-rival, Fethullah Gulen. He accused Gulen of being behind the failed coup. “I have a message for Pennsylvania,” Erdogan said in a televised speech. “You have engaged in enough treason against this nation. If you dare, come back to your country.”

Rounding up those associated with the coup

He added, “Turkey will not be run from a house in Pennsylvania.” If anyone thought that Erdogan was just blowing off steam, he seemed to salivate for Gulen’s return. In another address on Saturday, he addressed the United States directly. “Dear Mr. President, I told you this before: Either arrest Fethullah Gulen or return him to Turkey,” he charged. “You didn’t listen. I call on you again,

staged. “You can think about many motivations of people who staged this coup,” he said. “Some leaders’ stage … false suicide attacks to strengthen their hand.”

America Responds

As the U.S. attempts to take on ISIS, it cannot afford a falling out with Turkey, which borders Syria. Turkey, which since 1952 has been a

after there was a coup attempt. Extradite this man in Pennsylvania to Turkey. If we are strategic partners or model partners, do what is necessary.” He added that “any country that protects Fethhullah Gulen will be an enemy of Turkey,” a statement reminiscent of America’s post-911 position on those harboring Osama bin Laden. Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım echoed Erdogan’s sentiment. “I do not see any country that would stand behind this man, this leader of the terrorist gang, especially after last night,” he said. “The country that would stand behind this man is no friend to Turkey. It would even be a hostile act against Turkey.” Gulen has vehemently denied any involvement in the coup and subscribes to the theory that it was

member of NATO – a military alliance between western nations – plays a key role in the fight against ISIS. U.S. jets take off from an air base in southern Turkey to bomb ISIS targets. In the aftermath of the ISIS terrorist attack on the Istanbul Airport last month in which 41 people were killed, many believed that Turkey would strengthen its role in the fight against ISIS. But if Turkey has a rift with the U.S. they may diminish their involvement. Although ISIS poses a terrorist threat to Turkey, Erdogan sees the Kurds – who are the ones fighting ISIS on the ground in Syria – as a more existential threat to his government’s power, since approximately 20% of the Turkey population are Kurdish. If the Kurds gain control of land in Syria, the Kurds in Turkey may

seek independence as well. Therefore, when it comes to its campaign against ISIS, the U.S. has a flimsy ally in Turkey. That can all change if they give Erdogan the red meat that he wants: Fethullah Gulen. Secretary of State John Kerry reiterated on ABC’s This Week that “Turkey is a friend. Turkey is an ally. Turkey is an important coalition partner in the fight against ISIL.” He promised to consider an extradition request from Turkey and said, “If you have evidence of X, Y, or Z, please present it to us.” But he added, “We have very strict standards in order to protect people’s rights. We will go through our legal process.” Kerry told reporters in Brussels that the U.S. will honor its extradition treaty with Turkey. “There’s no interest we have in standing in the way of appropriately honoring the treaty that we have with Turkey,” he said. Within two days of Kerry’s statements, the Turkish government announced that they sent the formal extradition request to the U.S. “We have sent four dossiers to the United States for the extradition of the terrorist chief,” announced Prime Minister Binali Yildirim. He boasted, “We will present them with more evidence than they want.” Although President Obama may have a reputation of backing away from “red lines,” Recep Tayyip Erdogan has never been accused of such flimsiness. All bets are that a post-coup-empowered Erdogan will be a harder guy to play geo-political poker with. This leads to the likelihood that there will soon be a vacancy at a rolling 26-acre property in Pennsylvania.

Dating Dialogue

What Would You Do If… Moderated by Jennifer Mann, LCSW of The Navidaters

Dear Navidaters,

I’ve been dating now for about three years. I get set up a lot and most of them typically last for two or three dates. But there have been three separate women whom I dated for longer and things were going along really nicely. Until my problem kicked in. My problem is that I don’t seem to know how to seal the deal. I don’t know how to transition the conversation from the kind of shallow talk that goes on during early dates to meaningful conversation. I’m never sure what questions are too personal and what I should or shouldn’t say that is maybe too revealing about myself. So these relationships that seem to have so much potential initially, tend to eventually pitter out because they go nowhere meaningful. By the way, it’s not like I think of myself as a shallow person. I’ve worked on myself for many years, trying to grow as a person in important ways. But when it comes to taking what I’ve learned about myself into a conversation with a woman who I’m dating, I get very uncomfortable and unsure of what to say. I don’t even recognize myself on these dates. I was recently set up with Sarah, who seems like such a wonderful, sweet person. We’ve gone out twice already, so I already know what schools she’s gone to, which camps, where she’s lived, how many siblings she has, what her career goals are and so on. But I don’t really know what’s in her heart and I’m not sure how to get inside her heart. Any suggestions you have for me would be greatly appreciated.

The feedback from our readers has been remarkable. In order to facilitate further discussion, you can now continue the conversation anonymously on our website. Every Sunday, we will upload the weekend’s most recent edition of What Would You Do If to the dating forum at thenavidaters.com. Join The Navidaters and your fellow TJH readers in a comprehensive dialogue with regard to dating, relationships and marriage. The forum will be moderated daily for everyone’s comfort and safety. See you there! Disclaimer: This column is not intended to diagnose or otherwise offer resolutions to any questions. Our intention is not to offer any definitive conclusions to any particular question, but to offer areas of exploration for the author and reader. Due to the nature of the column receiving only a short snapshot of an issue, without the benefit of an actual discussion, the panel’s role is to offer a range of possibilities. We hope to open up meaningful dialogue and individual exploration.

t’s great that you recognize this issue and are willing to hear suggestions. It’s up to you to act on the suggestions of the panelists and professionals who respond in this column. Social skills and dating strategies are not hard to learn but they take practice. With time, you will be smoother at starting topics and talking about bigger topics. Preparing is key. Read up on some current events topics and prepare lists of envisioning topics such as how would you see yourself in a new community, as a parent, as a married child of middle age parents. Asking follow up questions can be practiced. There are games that people take along on dates for getting to know each other. “Perfect Matches,” developed by Joy Lieber, is popular with the frum crowd. A good dating coach will help you, too. I sense that there is something within you that is keeping you from opening up as well as getting into deeper realms with your dates. Perhaps you need to do some questioning of yourself and explore whether this just happens on dates. Are you unsure of yourself? Are you afraid to open up? Do you want to keep something inside? Do you have trouble with making new friends? Do you freeze at social occasions? Do you strike up conversations in shul, with co-workers and at simchas? Are these other areas difficult for you or is this problem happening just on dates? Me thinks otherwise. Dig deep and work on it with appropriate help.

ou seem like a really sweet, kind person. But your question smacks of the old Yiddish joke about the bochur who had no idea what to discuss on a date with a young woman. He’s advised to discuss food, family and philosophy. So he asks the girl three

questions: (Food) Do you like lokshen? (Answer: no.) (Family) Do you have a brother? (Answer: no.) (Philosophy) If you had a brother, would he like lokshen? (Bada-bing.) So you’ve managed the food and family and you’ve prolonged it from two questions to two dates. Now, you want to know what’s in her heart. You want philosophy, deep thoughts, the deep meaningful conversations that will take your conversation from superficial to something special. Now, my question to you is this: have you ever really gotten to know what’s in someone’s heart after meeting them twice? The answer is: probably not. You’ve gotten to know people well first by hanging out with them and spending time with them. And then, once you’re spending time with them, you get to know them by listening to them and knowing when to pause, when to listen, when to ask the gentle questions because you see the person wants to talk or needs some support. We pressure young people in our community to have “deep conversations,” as if these conversations will indicate to us how our future lives with these people will be. I remember distinctly one shidduch that my daughter made. The boy was completely smitten with the young woman in question. They enjoyed hours of talking about seemingly superficial things like their favorite books and they spent more hours playing board games together (they were both Trivial Pursuit fanatics). They just loved spending time together. But they’d never spoken about “deep” issues or their feelings about Big Important things like Israel, Zionism, Torah, etc. Mr. Smitten called my daughter in a panic about this: what do I do? My daughter told him that it didn’t matter. Given: you both have gone to seminary or yeshiva so you both love and believe in Torah. You think tzedakah is good. You love Israel. What matters is that you know that you’re both caring, sensitive people, that you respect each other and admire each other and that you’re dedicated to each other. Philosophies evolve

and change. It’s our reactions to other people’s thinking and a respectful understanding of the way they think and come to that thinking that matters. The couple is still talking, still happy, and, believe it or not, well over a decade later, still smitten. Your point on a date is to get so comfortable with someone, to have such a good time with them, that eventually you get to know what’s inside that person’s heart. Play the board game. Go for the long walk. Get a drink on the boardwalk. And ask her questions, open ones. “How was your day?” “What did you do?” “How did you feel when that happened?” Say things like, “It must be hard when…” or “That’s really amazing that you can…” or “What made you decide on that?” “That’s such an interesting way of thinking/dealing with…” If there’s a relationship to be had here, you will find long conversations evolving. And you’ll take your cues from her: you’ll ask additional questions once you hear her answers. A final note: I know a girl who was a Super Dater. Each boy she went out with wanted to marry her. How did she do it? Her goal with each date was to be a hostess and make the person feel special and good on the date. Super Dater also prepared. She kept a small piece of paper on her all week and would write short notes about things that came up during the week: an interesting story or encounter, a question that came up with a friend, a discussion with a co-worker. She brought these up on her dates. These sparked larger conversations, more philosophical ones, and kept the conversation more interesting and engaging than lokshen and theoretical siblings. You may want to try this yourself….

into your emotions, feelings, insecurities and yourself. That’s big, especially for a man. Secondly, I am impressed that you actually want to do something about it instead of pointing the finger at the girls you are dating. Which means you are a reflective, growth-oriented man. So I think you should be honest and open and tell it like it is. Tell Sara how you are feeling and that you feel you are stumbling in the area of digging deeper, and maybe with her help, you can begin the process. I think (and I believe most people agree), that it’s refreshing to see the vulnerable part in others. And it will be interesting and helpful to see how she reacts to that and what buttons you’ve pushed in her. Why don’t you talk about common values that you may or may not share? See if you can come up with either similar or even different ones. Values can be volunteering, family-centered living, political affiliation, healthy living, etc. See if you can come up with lifestyle similarities and differences like music, books, gym, love of food, traveling, etc. You can talk about how you envision your Shabbos table to look like – guests, dvar Torah, etc. Ask each other, “Do you think you are an introvert or extrovert?” “Do you consider yourself an emotional or intellectual thinker?” These type of questions shouldn’t be too difficult. I find that when I speak to my kallahs and ask them those questions about their chossonim, they don’t always have the answers. I tell them that now would be the time to find out and even if you ask it in an awkward way – it’s O.K. You can laugh at yourself. And observe how they react to your discomfort.

ere are a few suggestions you can try to move your dates into a more serious direc-

tion. Tell her that you want to learn more about her. She will love hearing that, though by telling her this, you should either have a question already planned that you would like to ask her, or you can suggest that on your next date, she comes prepared with one and you will do the same. See how that works for you. If it is successful, you can either do it again or see if questions and/or conversations come naturally on its own from there. Remember, you can always start off your question with “if this is too personal,” or “if you aren’t ready to talk about this subject or any

or what it’s worth, I have worked with single people who come in for therapy or coaching because they “don’t know how to seal the deal” or they want help “sealing the deal.” Oftentimes, not knowing how to seal the deal is code for “I don’t know how to form a meaningful connection” or “I am uncomfortable sharing of myself” as you allude to in your email. From you, I am hearing a lot of self-censorship going on. “Should I say this?” “When can I say that?” There is so much going on in your mind on your dates… you are secretly hard at work on your dates. This leaves you unable to relax and enjoy the company of the woman you are with. And I know this because you said that you don’t even recognize yourself on these dates. You seem like a fabulous, self-aware guy who is having some trouble in the connection department, and maybe in the self-esteem department as well (though I have been wrong before). Let’s talk about connection and why we feel connected to certain people and not others. True and meaningful connection is built upon two people slowly revealing themselves to each other. When we share intimate details about ourselves, we are inherently telling this person, “I trust you.”

I trust you enough to tell you my secret, my feelings, my desire, my shame, my guilt, my past, my quirks – you fill in the blank. The person being told the information feels special because she has been chosen to guard this intimate information, and it is then on her to return the message of trust. Do this enough times and voila … you have a relationship. But, we can only do this when we feel comfortable in our own skin. Before you can understand why you are having some issues getting into Sarah’s heart or the hearts of the women you’ve dated before her, I think it is worthwhile to explore the discomfort you feel when it is time to share, reveal or trust a woman. My intuition tells me your entry point to moving forward is for you to gain a greater understanding of your self-described discomfort when it is time to open up about yourself. What is it that makes you uncomfortable? I don’t know what they are, but I am certain that attached to the feeling of discomfort are some automatic thoughts. For some it might be, “Uh oh! She’s going to want to get engaged soon!” Or,

subject brought up, then it’s okay to say no and we can discuss it when you do feel it is the right time for you.” Then you automatically safeguard yourself from asking a question that is too private and you also win brownie points by showing her that you cherish her and her feelings. Malka Schulman, a CTACC and the creator of the Dating 4 Marriage Action Cards, actually takes you step-by-step through your dates with probing questions to ask with the goal of sealing the deal with the right woman. If you need the one-on one guidance, then a dating coach would be the ultimate way to go in order

“If I really let her in, she will see how unloveable I truly am.” Or, “Once she knows about ‘X’ she will think I’m such an idiot.” And still, for others, it is, “No one talked about feelings or personal stuff in my family. I feel awkward and uncomfortable talking about that stuff.” Try to find your automatic thoughts that pop up around the feeling of discomfort. This is the area that warrants some exploration and newfound awareness. When you have a handle on what you are dealing with, it is then that you can implement change! Because this has been ongoing, I think it would be helpful to talk this out with a therapist. For some people, specifically men, the idea of going for therapy is outrageous. I approach it from a practical standpoint. What you are doing isn’t working. You want change. What is the quickest way to get the desired outcome? (I’m trying to appeal to “guy think” over here. How’d I do?) Your level of self-awareness and your desire to “seal the deal,” er, connect, tells me that you have every reason to feel hopeful that you will have a meaningful relationship with a woman. Remember, you are only two dates in and Sarah wouldn’t be revealing what is in her heart to you right now. That revelation takes a bit more time for some people. Some final thoughts for you and the readers: You are allowed to be imperfect. You are human; you have a story, you

have a past and you have quirks. This is OK. If it is helpful, pretend the person you are dating is a friend. A huge component of a marital relationship is a solid friendship. How did you become friends with your close guy friends? Just because she has long hair and wears lipstick doesn’t make her a foreign creature. She’s just a person. Just like your friends. She goes to the bathroom, she fights with her mother, she has struggles, she is probably carrying a secret … just like your friends … just like you. As relationships progress, the natural order of things is to become more emotionally intimate. Prepare yourself, either on your own, or with a therapist for this intimacy. You are allowed to ask personal questions. And she will be asking the same of you. This is a relationship. If this idea feels foreign, undoable, or you are fumbling for words, take my advice and talk to someone. Good luck! Sincerely, Jennifer

I have always loved cold soups, anything from vichyssoise (a cold potato leek soup) to tomato gazpacho soup. This summer I was searching for a new twist on gazpacho soup and I developed this delicious combination of watermelon, tomato, feta and almonds. If you want to eat it with a meat meal, omit the crema and sprinkle on just the freshly toasted almonds. It can make a great appetizer for Shabbat day lunch or for a summer time brunch. It provides a light and refreshing burst of flavor to enhance any meal.

Watermelon Gazpacho with Almond Crema Ingredients

Preparation

Gazpacho 1 pound seedless watermelon, coarsely chopped (about 3 cups) 1 large beefsteak tomato, coarsely chopped, and seeded 1 English hothouse cucumber, peeled, coarsely chopped ½ jalapeño, seeds removed, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper

To make the Gazpacho: Purée watermelon, tomato, cucumber, jalapeño, oil, and vinegar in a blender until smooth. Transfer gazpacho to a large bowl; season with kosher salt and pepper. Cover and chill at least 1 hour before serving. Gazpacho can be made 1 day ahead. Keep chilled.

Crema ¼ cup almonds 2 ounces feta ¼ cup sour cream 3 tablespoons whole milk Olive oil (for serving) Sea salt Freshly ground black pepper

To make the Crema: Preheat oven to 350°F. Toast almonds on a rimmed baking sheet, tossing occasionally, until golden brown, about 8–10 minutes. (Alternatively, you can do this step in a dry small skillet over medium heat.) Let almonds cool, and then coarsely chop. Mash feta into sour cream in a small bowl until mostly smooth, then whisk in milk. Pour gazpacho into bowls. Top with crema and almonds, drizzle with oil, and season with sea salt and pepper. Crema can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and chill.

The Story Behind the Song By Riki Goldstein

Everyone knows his song, but few know the person who composed this classic tune. Tanchum Portnoy, a resident of the Five Towns, composed the melody over 40 years ago and yet the song is as familiar to the younger generation as it is to their grandparents. He was recently written up by Mishpacha Magazine, and we share their words below. Song: “Eitz Chaim” Composer: Tanchum Portnoy Year: 1972 Album: Tanchumim (1975)

I

t has been recorded by at least twenty artists over the years (including non-Jewish bands), but in essence, this enduring melody to the words “eitz chaim hi” belongs to a realm of music far more sublime than that of concert halls or studios, for it comes into its own when Yidden gather to daven in shul. In the forty-four years since Tanchum Portnoy composed his “Eitz Chaim,” he has heard it sung in shuls the world over (it’s the one with the flowing “de-e-rache-e-echa da-archei no-o-oam” in the second part, as opposed to the classic but more cantorial synagogue tune ending in the

tion singing together when the sifrei Torah are returned to their place of honor before Mussaf.” Portnoy was 22-years-old when he first picked up a guitar back in 1972. “I had been following Shlomo Carlebach’s singing. I never became one of his ‘groupies,’ but I was entranced by his music. It enthralled me, moved me, and affected me every time I listened. A friend helped me buy a guitar – and after learning to play four chords, ‘Eitz Chaim’ was the outcome.” Two years later, in 1974, Portnoy was ready to record some of his compositions on his first album, Tanchumim. Later he released Tanchumim

“I hear my music sung all over the world, by many who do not even know that I composed it. The same thing will happen to you. Just listen and enjoy every second.” chazzanus-style “hashi-iveinu Ha-hashem…”). “I’ve always been surprised at how widely sung it is,” Mr. Portnoy says. “I’ve been to shuls in St. Petersburg and Moscow, and to several cities in Europe, and heard ‘Eitz Chaim’ sung there. Congregations all over the States, Mexico, Australia, and Central America also use it in their nusach, with both the chazzan and congrega-

II, and his records – with some still popular vintage songs of the ‘70s – received an interesting distinction: His own musical mentor, Shlomo Carlebach, sang on the first record. It was extremely unusual for Carlebach to sing another artist’s song. “Everyone asks me how I got him to sing my music,” Portnoy says, and recounts the story. “I called him up and asked him and he said he had

thousands of his own songs to sing. I said, ‘Don’t say no until you hear it – maybe you’ll like it.’ He liked the songs enough to sing them, so he came to the studio. I remember that he came in very late, and he said to me, ‘Brother, I want to tell you something. I hear my music sung all over the world, by many who do not even know that I composed it. The same thing will happen to you. Just listen and enjoy every second.’ And he was right.” Carlebach sang “Shema Koleinu” and “Yimloch” on the new composer’s album, which was accompanied by the Neginah Orchestra. Tanchum Portnoy himself harmonizes on the album, but never takes a lead solo. While Tanchum Portnoy composed more than forty songs in the seventies, he always saw music as a hobby, not a profession. “I never had a band and I never went out to sing, so a lot of my songs remained unknown. ‘Eitz Chaim’ just had this unusual appeal. I think that the words and the tune come together very well. The projection of chords and notes is very pretty and very unusual, and it somehow speaks to the neshamah. ” Thousands of kallahs walked down to “Eitz Chaim” in the seventies and eighties. Uncle Moishy recorded a version with added English lyrics, bringing an old favorite to the younger generation. And to this day, mothers tell Portnoy (those who know his famous secret) that they sing this soothing tune to put their children to sleep

TANCHUM PORTNOY was always close to Shlomo Carlebach. He lived in Mexico for several years where Shlomo visited him on several occasions. Tanchum also traveled with Carlebach to Poland where he participated in Shlomo’s concerts and where they shared the only kosher salami in town (Portnoy had brought it from New York). Then one day, during a singing trip in Poland, the composer of over 3,000 niggunim turned to his protégé and said, “I wish I would have composed that song [Eitz Chaim].” It was the biggest compliment Portnoy could ever receive. at night. Portnoy knows that “Eitz Chaim” has found its way into Conservative and Reform temples too, where, lehavdil, it’s sung as a hymn. But Carlebach was right. Few people actually know that the composer of this classic is a self-effacing Jew from Long Island.

Notable Quotes “Say What?!”

For all of this loss, for all of this grief, for all of the cynicism, the tragedy in Benghazi has wrought upon America, I blame Hillary Clinton. I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son. In an email to her daughter shortly after the attack, Hillary Clinton blamed it on terrorism. But when I saw Hillary Clinton at Sean’s coffin ceremony, just days later, she looked me squarely in the eye and told me a video was responsible. Since then, I have repeatedly asked Hillary Clinton to explain to me the real reason why my son is dead. I’m still waiting. - Patricia Smith, mother of Sean Smith, who was killed in Benghazi, addressing the Republican National Convention

I’ve experienced so much in my short life and the past 3 days have tested me to the core. I swear to G-d I love this city but I wonder if this city loves me. In uniform I get nasty hateful looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat… Please don’t let hate infect your heart. This city MUST and WILL get better. I’m working in these streets so any protesters, officers, friends, family, or whoever, if you see me and need a hug or want to say a prayer I got you. - Baton Rouge police officer Montrell Jackson in a Facebook posting several days before he was killed along with two other police officers

A new report says that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently rejected an offer from Donald Trump to be his running mate. When Trump’s people asked why she rejected the offer, she said, “For the last time, I’m Whoopi Goldberg.” – Seth Myers

I don’t care what that woman up there, the mother, has felt. Her emotions are her own. But for the country in choosing a leader, it’s wrong to have someone get up there and tell a lie about Hillary Clinton. It’s not true. It’s logically not true. I think it’s wrong that they ruined their evening with this. - Chris Matthews, CNBC, reacting to Patricia Smith’s heartfelt speech

When asked about Bernie Sanders’ endorsement of Hillary Clinton, Clinton’s campaign manager told reports that the two actually had a fairly easy time in determining Sanders’ role in the campaign. Bernie will be in charge of translating her speeches for the hearing impaired. – Seth Myers

The game Pokémon Go is actually making people visit remote, potentially dangerous areas. On the bright side, they finally found a way to get people to attend the Rio Olympics. – Conan O’Brien

Let me be as blunt and direct as I can be: Western civilization is in a war. We should frankly test every person here who is of a Muslim background, and if they believe in Sharia, they should be deported. Sharia is incompatible with Western civilization. Modern Muslims who have given up Sharia, glad to have them as citizens. Perfectly happy to have them next door. - Newt Gingrich, on Fox News, several hours after the Nice terrorist attack

In the wake of last night’s attacks, we’ve heard more suggestions that all Muslims in America be targeted, tested for their beliefs, some deported or jailed. And the very suggestion is repugnant and an affront to everything that we stand for as Americans.

Political Crossfire

In Our Moment of Division, Who will Lead? By Michael Gerson

O

n April 1968 ,4 – the day that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed by a sniper – Robert Kennedy gave (arguably) one of the greatest American speeches not given by a president. Speaking in a tough section of Indianapolis, Kennedy informed the shocked crowd that King was dead, quoted Aeschylus on the wisdom that comes “drop by drop” from pain, and set out the ideal of a politics that could “make gentle the life of this world.” Kennedy urged Americans “to make an effort to understand” – offering empathy as the best hope in “rather difficult times.” Indianapolis was calm that night, but there were soon riots in 110 other American cities. So, on April 1968 ,5, Kennedy spoke in Cleveland, giving a brief speech, undeservedly neglected. “No wrongs have ever been righted by riots and civil disorders,” he said. “A sniper is only a coward, not a hero; and an uncontrolled, uncontrollable mob is only the voice of madness, not the voice of the people.” This balance between empathy and a concern for order is what many leaders strive for today. Our country is less riven than in 1968, but our leaders are not as

skilled, at least when it comes to rhetoric. We are not asking for Aeschylus, and would probably mock his appearance in a speech today, but it would be nice if politicians did not immediately fall into partisan ruts, or post Facebook banalities. What American leader is equal to explaining this moment and moving us forward? The question just echoes. President Obama, as he demonstrated in a fine speech on the 50th anniversary of Selma, can sometimes find the words. But he has become symbolic of the limits of symbolism. Many thought his election was a fundamental turning point on issues of race. But just 15 percent of Americans now believe his presidency has brought blacks and whites together. It is a failure not entirely his fault, but it contributes to an atmosphere of cynicism. Hillary Clinton argues that we are “stronger together,” but she remains one of the most divisive and distrusted politicians in America. Speaker Paul Ryan spoke movingly on the floor of the House in reaction to Dallas, urging Americans to defy the predictions of

division – but he is at least partially discredited by his endorsement of a presidential candidate who thrives on discord. Chuck Todd of NBC News wonders if support for Trump will be a “stain” or a “tattoo.” I would bet a tattoo, leaving only a handful of Republicans unmarked by exclusion. Trump is the entrepreneur of enmity, employing ethnic stereotypes on the first day of his campaign, and breaking through imagined “ceilings” of GOP support by encouraging fear of Muslims after the San Bernardino attack. Some in the conservative media are actively practicing a white identity politics – witness the Drudge Report’s headline “Black Lives Kill.” The whole political enterprise of turning out the white vote – the only real hope of the Trump campaign – is morally problematic and dangerous. In fact, there are people on the left and right who benefit from encouraging just enough division, just enough fear, to motivate their supporters, without tipping them over into violence. They are playing with fire in a parched and withered land. Even as an outsider to the world of liberal advocacy,

I think it is possible to see some troubling trends. Civil rights movement-era figures thought they could improve society by changing institutions –passing legislation or winning judicial battles. And the aspirations of the movement were carried in the durable institution of the Afri-

systemic racism, most of us have the ability to defy our times and reach out across lines of race and religion. And religious people have a particular calling in this area. A pastor friend who runs a retreat center in rural Virginia found an abandoned slave cemetery on the property. His religious

can-American church. But younger activists seem to have less faith in institutional reform because they have less faith in institutions – including religious ones. But without a belief in reform, how is justified anger channeled into constructive purposes? “Maybe it just sags/ like a heavy load,” offered Langston Hughes. “Or does it explode?” Even if we cannot, as individuals, hope to change

community reached out to African-American leaders and together they rededicated the cemetery, asking for forgiveness and praying for healing. None who participated came away unchanged. While waiting for leaders, perhaps the most practical and hopeful path is to become them. (c) 2016, Washington Post Writers Group

FIGHTING ILLNESS WITH LOVE IS MORE THAN A SLOGAN. IT’S WHAT WE DO. When Jake was diagnosed, getting him better and keeping their family functioning became his parents’ only priorities. So they became Chai Lifeline’s priority as well.

We Care For 4,300 Children and Families Around the World. And One Jake Katz. Jake’s parents breathed easier in the cradle of Chai Lifeline’s hospital support: hot kosher meals that nourished bodies and souls, transportation assistance and the support of caring volunteers. His brothers benefited from the attention of Big Brothers and i-Shine after school activities. And the whole family thrived during retreats, recreational activities and our new Family Camp Adventure. Two summers at Camp Simcha have given Jake the confidence he needs to face painful treatments, and the friends who will help see him through them. Forgotten Her es

Getting in Our Enemies’ Heads By Avi Heiligman

U.S. Army loudspeaker team in action in Korea

A

n extension of deception in warfare is psychological operations. Getting in the head of the enemy and civilians living in enemy lands has been around since wars have been recorded by historians. The ancient Egyptians used chariots with spikes on the wheels and their enemies would flee the battlefield. Many conquerors, including Alexander the Great and the Hittites (Chitim), would integrate among beaten territories so that they would be of help in future battles. Today PsyOps (short for psychological operations) is a major part of modern armies, and the U.S. military has placed them under Special Operations Command. The Department of Defense defines PsyOps as “planned operations to convey selected information and indicators to foreign audiences to influence their emotions, motives, objective reasoning, and ultimately the behavior of foreign governments, organizations, groups, and individuals. The purpose of psychological operations is to induce or reinforce foreign attitudes and behavior favorable to the originator’s objectives.” There are three types of PsyOps: White, Gray and Black. White PsyOps is done officially by the government

A PsyOps soldier armed with a M249 machine gun and a loud speaker system

and can be traced to governmental sources. Gray PsyOps usually can’t be traced to the official source but to some middle “agency.” These false third parties are used when the target is non-hostile or indigenous and not totally accepting of the main source. Black PsyOps are done when the target is hostile and can’t be traced to the source in any way. It is a form of intellectual and political subversion. Any way to get to the enemy has been used, including leaflets, radio and TV broadcasts, newspapers, mail, social media, poster, billboards and phone calls, among other tactics. During WWII, leaflets were dropped from bombers with many different types of messages. Some over Germany said that the Nazis were losing power and to give up hope. Leaflets were dropped over Japanese troop concentrations stating that the bearer can surrender without shame and would be treated well. This rarely worked as almost all Japanese were schooled in the Bushido Code to die for the emperor instead of shaming your family by surrendering. Radio messages as well as mail were ways to reach the public in enemy territories. Tanks with loud speakers were sent out towards the end of the war with messages for

An American soldier hands out a newspaper to a local in Mosul, Iraq, in 2004

POWs saying that the war was over. This caused many German soldiers to surrender. PsyOps worked really well in Italy as well but the Japanese seemingly were impervious to this type of warfare. The OSS, the grandfather unit to the CIA, ran these operations among their many duties (they mainly engaged in spying, sabotage, training indigenous soldiers and other like operations). Leaflet drops and loudspeaker operations were escalated during the Cold War with units specifically dedicated to PsyOps created for the first time. Within 24 hours of President Truman declaring war on Korea, leaflets were dropped over South Korea saying that a state of war existed and the U.S. will help those opposing Communism. By the end of the war, over a billion leaflets were dropped over Korea with a variety of messages. They ranged from cartoons, to messages of despair, to “if you surrender now we’ll treat you humanly.” Just knowing that American forces were in the area was enough for some Viet Cong (South Vietnamese Communist fighters) to stop fighting. Navy SEALs had the practice of leaving a “calling card” whenever they killed an enemy in a covert mission. The card said things like “You will be

next unless you stop fighting, Sincerely The Men With Green Faces” (SEALs painted their faces green for camouflage). In December 1989, the U.S. invaded Panama to take down Dictator Manuel Noriega. At first he disappeared so the American forces focused on capturing his associates. In an operation called Ma Bell, phone calls were made by Spanish speaking officers and told the associates that they must surrender immediately with all of their men or face the consequences. The result was fast coming and very effective. Thousands of enemy troops, guns and over a dozen Noriega cronies were captured. No American casualties came from these operations. Capturing Noriega himself was a different story as he had disappeared during the invasion. Five days later he was seen in the Vatican’s embassy, where American soldiers could not enter. Diplomatic efforts with the Vatican failed so PsyOps were called to work. Loud music was played 24 hours a day but was stopped after three days when the Vatican complained to President Bush. Then the U.S. Army found shocking material in his personal effects that pointed that he was a sick (in the head) and

dirty man. While this information isn’t appropriate to write in a family magazine, PsyOps used it to convince Noriega that all was lost. After eleven days of evading the Americans a disheveled Noriega came out of the em-

bassy and immediately was tackled by American soldiers. He served time in the U.S. and in France and is now in a Panamanian prison on human rights violation charges. Blu-82 bombs are more

commonly known as Daisy Cutters. Invented during the Vietnam War they were brought out of retirement during Desert Storm in 1991. A few were used with one unknowing British operator calling into headquarters, “Those blokes just nuked the place!” Leaflets were dropped in some military-heavy areas saying that they were due for a 12,000 pound warhead Daisy Cutter. Thousands of Iraqi soldiers surrendered in droves to avoid the bombing that never came. Citizens turning on their TVs and radios listened to prerecorded messages prepared by PsyOps called the Voice of the Gulf. PsyOps also used loud music and TV to interrogate Iraqi prisoners during the Iraq War. They hadn’t been exposed to heavy metal mu-

sic and only were allowed to watch Iraqi propaganda material during Saddam’s regime. This exposure “softened” them up and they readily gave over vital information to Coalition interrogators. There were reports that PsyOps soldiers were behind the toppling of Saddam’s statue in Firdos Square. Radio and TV messages were broadcast to the general Iraqi public, and newspapers were handed out to civilians with pro-American views. The missions of PsyOps can be summed in their recruitment listing. The job duties include “research and analyze methods of influencing foreign population from a variety of information sources. Operate and maintain equipment such as ground tactical vehicles and shelter systems, loudspeak-

89

er systems, state of the art computers, analog and digital recording and playback devices and communication systems. Travel to overseas locations in peace, crisis and conflict to assist U.S. and foreign governments, militaries and civilian populations.” Most are based out of Fort Bragg, NC, although the navy maintains a PsyOps unit, and is a vital element of the Special Forces community. As time goes by more and more of their operations become public and we know how important they are to the safety of all Americans. Avi Heiligman is a weekly contributor to The Jewish Home. Visiting South of the Border? By Rabbi Mordechai Kruger

W

e have all seen it, probably traveled on it many times, but how many of us have thought about the life lessons that can be learned from Interstate-95? Heading south, it traverses the entire eastern seaboard, connecting the Jewish communities of all of the great eastern urban centers to their deepest cultural roots in Miami Beach. And then, like an exhausted salmon that has finally reached the headwaters of its birth, the great highway quietly fades into a local street. But along the way, passing through the hinterlands of the Carolinas, I-95 passes a spot called “South of the Border.” South of the Border is probably best described as a gas station run amok. Located just south of the border between North and South Carolina, it may have once been a simple place to fuel up and continue along the journey. Then, as someone decided to take advantage of certain laws that are more lenient in the fiercely Libertarian southern state, especially regarding fireworks, it began evolving into something more. Restaurants, stores selling every imaginable gewgaw, even hotels, and a wedding chapel followed. Today, well, what it is depends on who you ask.

Some, cutting through the glitz to the utilitarian gas and other necessities, may still see it as a rest stop. Some may see it as a useful diversion to break up a long trip, a way to overcome the boredom of hours in the car. But some have actually turned it into a destination, spending whole vacations surrounded by cheap trinkets and wornout clichés. And in this, for job hunters, it can be seen as a metaphor with important lessons to teach. I often work with clients who are not able to decide on a career that they would like to pursue. I guide them in reaching out to working people to gather information about potential careers. My goal is to help them reach a point where they see a convergence of their talents, background and skills with the requirements of a specific job. Focusing on that job will enable them to make a strong case to a potential employer. But there is a weird kind of glitch that often pops up when people start talking to businessmen about their interests, skills, etc. In the middle of the conversation, the businessman will ask them, “Why don’t you just come to work for me?” It seems to be a serendipitous moment, a wonderful fairy tale ending to the

stress and frustration of a job search. My client is looking for a job; a job has fallen into his lap. What could be better? But the truth is more complex. While I certainly am not denying that some people get really, but really lucky, job hunting much more often is like a trip down I-95, and this kind of offer is like ending up at South of the Border. Imagine that you were on that road trip, and you had in mind that when you get to Miami, you want to shop for a new suit. Then you pull into South of the Border and see the tall neon sign “Quality Men’s Clothing!!” You might think you are really lucky that you can buy a suit quickly and conveniently and save time in Miami for better things. But hopefully you’ll think again. The suit you can buy at an overgrown gas station is probably not the one you want to be wearing for the long term. It may take more time and effort, but waiting until you find the place that has what you really want, the suit that really fits you, is absolutely worthwhile. Every job hunter should be looking for a job where he will create maximum value for his employer while engaging his talents in a meaningful way. So he is not looking for any job that comes along. He knows he’s on a journey, one that can be long and frus-

trating, like driving down I-95. So if you’re on a road trip, and you see a rest stop masquerading as a worthwhile destination, what do you do? Someone who stops at South of the Border, just picks up what he needs, and moves on has not damaged his vacation. Sometimes in order to reach a destination you need to stop for necessities. If this unexpected job offers an opportunity to pick up some valuable experience, learn a useful skill, or meet a wider circle of people who could become resources in the future, then taking the job could be a good career move. As long as my client stays focused on his ultimate goal, and actively seeks the experiences and skills that he needs to develop in his career, then spending some time at this “rest stop” will pay off in the long term. It is also possible that there really isn’t very much to like about this job. It may offer very little that will help for a future career move. But it still may be worth taking. If the stress of being jobless has reached a point where it threatens to invade other parts of the job hunter’s life, shaking the peace of his entire family, then taking the job may be a necessary step. But like a diversion for car-weary kids, it needs to be

done with clear limits. The search for the right job has to continue. The network building and information gathering, if anything, need to be increased, not set aside. Because now, there is a danger which is more ominous than not having a job. The danger, of course, is getting stuck in the wrong job. Like an entire vacation spent at a Mexican-themed gas station, eventually the fun will wear off. The satisfaction that comes from receiving a paycheck will fade. Frustration and broken dreams will remain, along with the aching awareness of what could have been. Some well-meaning people will urge their friends to “man-up” and just be glad to have a job. But a job hunter should never see himself as a wage-earning drone. He should always be confident that he has something more to offer the world. It can be really hard to say “no” to an unexpected job offer. But a well-thought-out “no” will always be a lot better than a hopeless, defeated “yes”.”

Shell Games on the Big Screen By Allan Rolnick, CPA

T

he dog days are here, and multiplexes across America are delighting audiences with the usual summer fare. Down to the left in Theatre Three, a motley crew of undersea chums are busy finding their friend Dory. Across the hall in Theatre Five, Universal Studios has ripped off reimagined the Toy Story premise with pets instead of playthings. Around the corner in Theatre Six, you can watch the earthlings unite once again to defeat the aliens in Independence Day: Resurgence 3D. (Don’t forget your $10 tub of popcorn and your $6 soda!) Director Steven Soderbergh has shot his share of thrillers, including the Oscar-winning Traffic and the casino-caper series Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen. Now he’s launched work on a different kind of thriller that the critics at the IRS will be sure to applaud: an as-yet unnamed project based on (you guessed it) the pulse-pounding Panama Papers. Need a quick refresher? Back in April, the International Consortium for Investigative Journalism released bombshell results from a year spent combing through 11.5 million documents leaked from the Panamanian law firm of Mossack Fonseca. The pa-

pers revealed the owners of 214,000 mostly-secret shell companies. Mossack Fonseca’s clients included the king of Saudi Arabia, the presidents of Argentina and Ukraine, and the former prime ministers of Georgia,

owned millions of dollars’ worth of Icelandic bank bonds while he was in charge of negotiating their bailout. (Oops.) And it’s hard to believe that Mallory Chacón Rossell, an “alleged” money launderer tied to Mexican

The prime minister of Iceland resigned after his citizens learned that he and his wife secretly owned millions of dollars’ worth of Icelandic bank bonds while he was in charge of negotiating their bailout. (Oops.) Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, and (again) Ukraine. There’s nothing inherently illegal about using offshore entities. Investors often find it easier to own assets outside their own countries through shell companies, and there are legitimate tax advantages as well. But not everyone unmasked by the leak appears to have been operating entirely aboveboard. The prime minister of Iceland resigned after his citizens learned that he and his wife secretly

druglord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, was using her offshore entity to hold, say, bank CDs. Soderbergh previously turned the price-fixing scandal at Archer Daniels Midland into a serviceable film called The Informant, and even convinced Matt Damon to star. In this film, he’ll be dramatizing the upcoming book Secrecy World, which recounts the tale of the journalists who broke the story. So we won’t just be watching a bunch of lawyers

in tropical-weight pinstripes filing corporate documents with various governments. Casting hasn’t yet been announced. But there are some stars who may not want to audition. Emma Watson is rumored to have made £24 million for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series. But her name turned up in the Papers as beneficiary of a British Virgin Islands company. (No points for Gryffindor!) And martial-arts star Jackie Chan owned at least six BVI companies, including one called Jackie Chan Ltd. (If he really was trying to hide something, he probably should have worked harder on a name.) We have no idea how much Soderbergh will make from this latest project. But we trust he’s smart enough to realize he doesn’t have to hide it offshore to pay less tax on it. All he really needs is a plan. Make sure you have one if you want to pay less without winding up in an unwelcome spotlight! Allan J Rolnick is a CPA who has been in practice for over 30 yea rs in Queens, NY. Life C ach

Beg, Borrow, Buy or Steal By Rivki D. Rosenwald Esq., CLC, SDS

T

he newest option is to rent a gown rather than buying one. My friend who was about to make her first wedding said she heard about this. She asked why she should pay so much money and not even get to keep her gown? I responded: that’s the advantage! You don’t want to start accumulating these gowns if you can help it. No kid of yours is going to pick the same color scheme for gowns for the next wedding. You just accumulate this rainbow of gowns that you never wear again. You run out of place to store it. You yourself then become a gown gemach/lender for others. After all, when are you going to wear a mint green or bright purple gown again? Only at your own affair can you get away with this! Now let’s talk about the actual bride’s gown. A generation or two ago, brides bought their own gowns. Then they cleaned and preserved it, hanging or boxing it. They emotionally projected that one day their child would love to wear it. Never did they realize that when their child actually took one look at it, they’d go into gales of laughter or polite conversation. You wore that? I don’t think that’s my look. But, I’m sure it looked great on you! As similar as bride’s gowns are, somehow each person has a look that feels right to them. Most bride’s gowns take up even more room than regular ones. They hoop, they bustle, they flare – a lot! Then there is also the long, flowing train ... you almost have to take a train to the next stop to be in the

same room with the gown. Who has that kind of room in their house? And when you start keeping all the bridesmaids and mother of the bride gowns, you practically have to give away your regular wardrobe to find place for them. What a pleasure to give it back to someone. Sometimes you fantasize you’ll cut the gown down and wear it as

copy that? Oh no, this is made just for you! And there’s a spot on your body that’s a 2, a 4, a 6, an 8, or 10, or 12, etc. – and they are going to make it work just for your every inch. But you have other things to do with your life! Now, I’m not saying you can’t always opt to buy something. But, even that takes a lot of luck and footwork.

Then there is also the long, flowing train ... you almost have to take a train to the next stop to be in the same room with the gown.

a dress after the event. Raise your hand if you are one of the few who actually carried out this plan! I know one young lady who did. And guess what? A few weeks later another friend of hers decided to use that same color for her bridesmaids. Go figure, the one efficient person still got stuck getting another replacement gown. It doesn’t mean no one makes up gowns anymore. Sure they do. But there’s not just the price to pay, in money, there’s the price to pay in time. You’ve got to keep going back for fittings! Like, can’t they figure out you’re a size 2 or 4 or 6 or 8 and just

You don’t usually walk into the first – or second or third or fourth – place and find something. There’s always ordering online … but that can keep you pretty busy too! The greatest thing is when you hear someone wore a gown your exact color. And it was gorgeous! And it was just your look. And she’s exactly your size! And someone even asked her and she’d be willing to lend it to you … if only it was hers! She got it from a gemach – in Lakewood no less. Go figure that besides 9,000 available black hat learners, they have these “Oscar de la Renta-like

gowns” in some random basement in Lakewood. Look at the lucky men. They just have to decide which tie to wear! Oh, and trust me, they can be as busy with that as you are with your gowns. After all, matter expands to fill the space allotted! A woman is usually dealing with every aspect of a wedding, right up to the last minute. A man is still deciding which tie to wear, right up to the last minute. And then he’s still not sure he made the right decision! “Are you sure you like this tie the best?” Can we do it all any differently? No, I don’t think so. We’ve covered every possibility. Beg, borrow, buy, steal! I don’t think there’s anything left. And honestly, if you’re not busy picking out a gown you’d be busy anyway picking out the flower arrangements or tablecloths. And that you don’t even get to schlep around with you all night. So whatever option you chose, just try to look your best and feel your happiest. Because as important as it is to you to have that gown ready to go, pressed, and poofed the day of the affair, a day later you want it anywhere but in your space. Enjoy good times. However enwrapped you get there!
