JFSA: Using Wisdom Guided by Kindness By Stuart Mellan
“Kindness is the highest wisdom.” As I look back on all that we have accomplished this past year, it occurs to me that our federation’s work is a series of small steps informed by this simple teaching. And while the steps are small, the results can be powerful. Some examples: • This past year we launched a concierge project that is representing all of our congregations and agencies – making certain that we are handling all newcomer and other inquiries in a warm and welcoming manner. We also launched JewishTucson.org which is making it easy to engage and connect to Jewish community activities of all kinds and for all ages. • We are fulfilling a 40-year dream by expanding our Holocaust History Center – a joint project of the Jewish History Museum and the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona. This new 2,000-square-foot space is under construction and slated to open next winter. It be using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the stories of our local survivors. We expect thousands of school children to visit annually. • Through our Weintraub Israel Center we have established pen pal relationships (using Skype and other technologies) between 300 Tucson kids in our local schools and synagogues with children in our Partnership Region of Israel bordering Gaza. • We have expanded our Homer Davis Friday food pack program – our signature social action project in the general community – now sending nutritious foods such as canned tuna, macaroni and cheese, cereal and more food home with 65 kids who otherwise might go hungry on weekends. We also have hosted a forum on poverty in Tucson as part of our ongoing work through our Jewish Community Relations Council. • Our LGBT Jewish Inclusion Project, one of the first established by a federation over a decade ago, changed its name to JFSA Pride to coincide with the recent Supreme Court decision and in recognition of the increasing acceptance we have enjoyed since the project began. • This summer we will accompany Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and other community leaders to Israel, and our first Weintraub Israel Center trip planned for February of this coming year is virtually sold out. • In response to Mayor Rothschild’s request, our JCRC played a leading role in a community-wide effort to provide support and service to hundreds of Central American asylum-seekers 16 2015-2016 Resource Guide | Arizona Jewish Life
who passed through Tucson. • Our Women’s Philanthropy launched a continuing project to raise awareness with regard to sex trafficking. Care packages were made for and distributed to victims. • Through our Mitzvah Magic project we provided personalized care packages at each of the major Jewish holidays for 25 of the most vulnerable Jewish families in Tucson. • A community collaboration called J-TAG began this year bringing together teen leaders from the youth groups and youth programs in Tucson to plan joint social action/service learning programs and engage Jewish teens with an emphasis on reaching those not currently engaged in Jewish life. The Teen Advisory Council of our Youth Philanthropy program raised $12,000 for a local program that aims to prevent elder abuse. • We expanded our Transportation Project, which provides rides to seniors and disabled adults to synagogue services and programs, and we have instituted a task force to explore ways in which we might assist adults with disabilities in our community. • Super Sunday Mitzvah Day provided a way for the entire community to come together for a day of tikkun olam. PJ Library families joined with B'nai Tzedek teens and tweens from a newly formed group called the Many Mitzvah Makers to learn about the Jewish values of giving and supporting the community. Care packages were created by all youth for Tucson's elderly Jewish population and included matzah ball soup mix, a personally decorated picture frame and a hamsa for the wall complete with the blessing for the home. Underlying our federation’s work is the adage that “community doesn’t just happen, it has to be created.” That being the case, we are always looking to answer the question: “What kind of community do we want for ourselves and our next generation?” While there are many answers, for us the answer prominently incorporates the following: We want an engaged and vibrant Jewish community that celebrates diversity, takes care of the most vulnerable, and nurtures a strong sense of peoplehood. As we aspire towards this vision, our work is firmly rooted by the Talmudic teaching that “kindness is the highest wisdom” – reminding ourselves that every small step that we take in creating our aspirational community can be powerfully important. JFGP: Creating a Better Tomorrow Today By Stuart Wachs
The Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix exists to strengthen and sustain a vibrant, inclusive community that enriches lives. We foster Jewish education, inspire young Jewish adults, care for Jewish seniors and forge ties with Israel. With the generosity of our community, federation allocates millions of dollars for critical services and also provides leadership, guidance and the impact of the collective. I am proud to share a few of the things made possible through our supporters this year. Seniors: We successfully implemented the first initiative identified with the completion of our senior needs study. As recommended by our task force, a senior services concierge began connecting seniors with available community services in July. The position was made possible through federation funding and is administered through our partner, Jewish Family and Children’s Services. Continuing our momentum, we will gather experts from aging-in-place fields to access our next initiative based on the study. Israel Advocacy: The goal of federation’s Israel advocacy grants is to develop educated and passionate Israel advocates in our community. We are doing this in three ways: • Through Hillel and JAC on the Arizona State University campus, we funded the creation of an Israel engagement coordinator to develop advocacy education and training for college students, campus-based advocacy initiatives and to encourage students to visit Israel through approved trips. • We are also reaching out to high school students. This year, more than 360 9th- to 12th-graders in BBYO will be trained to “Speak Up for Israel” through a series of workshops. • This fall we are taking 15 community leaders to Israel to meet with business and political leaders and to return as strong advocates for Israel. NOWGen: To further impact Millennials, the federation is hiring a NOWGen senior director. Our expanded NOWGen staff will develop new programs and increase engagement among Jewish young adults through philanthropy, social action, leadership development and the NOWGen Giving Circle. Building Community in the East Valley: In 2013 federation initiated a meeting of community leaders in the East Valley to increase engagement and connectivity. In April, the group submitted eight recommendations, including opening a federation office in the East Valley, encouraging partner agencies
to offer more services in the East Valley and reviving the East Valley Community Council. Our East Valley office opens this fall and we will work with the East Valley organizations to implement the remaining initiatives. Other Developments Campaign: We are only halfway through the campaign year and are significantly ahead of this time last year, but it will take everyone in the community coming together to meet and exceed our goal of half-a-million-dollar growth over last year. Through the community’s generosity, we are able increase our impact in the community and funding for our community partners and schools. In addition, in the coming year, we will further enhance our major donor benefits and programs through recognition, events and opportunities to engage in our work both here and abroad. Women’s Philanthropy: The federation has made a renewed commitment to strengthen Women’s Philanthropy and to help engage more women. This year, we launched a major revitalization initiative and expanded leadership. For three years, we have been rebuilding the signature campaign luncheon and this year’s Ignition! was exceptional. We continue to create approachable ways for women to gather and make a difference, such as TOV (Tikkun Olam Volunteers). This fall, we bring back the speakers series and reinstate our local mini-missions. We are grateful to the small but very committed group of women who kept Women’s Philanthropy alive and to the women who recently joined the effort to expand its impact. Business & Professionals Groups: The federation is proud to expand the programs of its business & professional groups, bringing the Jewish community together through business connections. In addition to our Cardozo Society for those in the legal field and our Real Estate & Finance division, we launched Chai Tech in April 2015 to bring together those in the information, technology and engineering fields. Our 2015 spring events offered exclusive meetings with top industry speakers from American Express, DMB, Universal Technical Institute and more. Our members learn about the federation and network in a casual setting. We look forward to our exciting offerings starting in the fall. Phoenix Board of Rabbis launches Community Relations Council Rabbi Jeremy Schneider has just begun his fifth year as rabbi of Temple Kol Ami, a Reform congregation in Scottsdale. He and his wife, Rachel, a teacher at Pardes Jewish Day School, have three children, Ezra, Micah and Naomi. Rabbi Schneider has a long history in social justice advocacy. In 2008, he was one of six Americans selected for a US Dept. of Statesponsored interfaith study tour in Egypt and Syria. That same year Rabbi Jeremy Schneider his grassroots work in durable peace-building earned him the “Citizen Diplomat – Peace Award Quilt” from the National Peace Foundation. He was the keynote speaker at the Islamic Society of North America Convention in 2010. In 2012 the Reform movement’s Religious Action Center in Washington, DC, chose him as a Brickner Fellow to be a more effective social justice advocate. In spring 2014, he completed a year-long Interfaith Fellowship Seminar designed to inform Arizona faith leaders to be advocates for sound public policy and social justice. Now as president of the Greater Phoenix Board of Rabbis (his two-year term began in May), he is poised to share that expertise with his fellow rabbis in the Valley. We asked him about both the rabbinic board in general and about the board’s recent grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix to create the first Jewish Community Relations Council in the area in almost a decade. The Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Phoenix 2015 discretionary grants included a $54,000 planning grant for the Board of Rabbis of Greater Phoenix to re-establish a Jewish Community Relations Council. This one-year planning grant will allow the board of rabbis to hire an employee to oversee development of a JCRC.
The Board of Rabbis Q: How many rabbis from which movements are on the Greater Phoenix Board of Rabbis?
About 35. All are welcome although there is a separate Orthodox Rabbinical Council.
Q: What do you consider the board's primary role?
The Board of Rabbis of Greater Phoenix is an organization serving the Phoenix metropolitan area. Its membership consists of rabbis who have joined together for professional and social interaction and support, religious and educational enrichment. The members are committed to the ideal of K'lal Yisrael, the unity of the Jewish community, in fulfilling the purposes and goals of Judaism in a way that is beneficial to all concerned.
Q: Are there any existing board programs of which you are especially proud or that you feel have a significant impact on the community? Yes! Obviously this project with the JCRC. Last year, we brought the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning to Phoenix/Valley. We were successful in bringing

two adult classes to town and plan to launch two more cohorts this fall. We have a paid staff member and the Board of Rabbis oversees the program. And two years ago, we started communal Tikkun Le’il Shavuot Night of Learning events that have brought hundreds of adult learners together.
Q: Does the board currently have any paid staff?
We employ a staff person to oversee the Melton program. We have been given a grant for the JCRC staff person as well.
JCRC Q: Given your extensive background in interfaith relations and social justice, were you the driving force behind the Board of Rabbis grant application to re-establish a Jewish Community Relations Council? No, Rabbi Bonnie Sharfman has been instrumental in the grant application.
Q: I understand the former JCRC was a program of the Jewish Federation, which is fairly common. Are you aware of any other JCRCs that are affiliated with a board of rabbis? There are none to our knowledge. And we are also the first to ever run a Melton School as well.
Q: Will being a program of the Board of Rabbis provide any advantages or differences in the council?
Absolutely, and I would encourage you reaching out to Rabbi Sharfman on this one (see below), but the obvious advantage is we are not a fundraising organization so we won’t be constrained by those considerations when we/JCRC determined what issues we would like to address and how we would like to address them.
Past President Rabbi Bonnie Sharfman: It is important to remember that this is a one-year planning/capacity building grant. The re-establishment of this very important council will be more successful because of the backing of the BRGP. The community often looks to its rabbis for support, advice and direction and thus we have stepped forward to serve as convener or facilitator for this critically important community organization. Board of Rabbis sponsorship will provide the JCRC with the backing and legitimacy it deserves for it to thrive. The BRGP is invested in serving as ‘convener’ or ‘facilitator’ for the community to mobilize on critical issues for Jewish life in Phoenix. This current request and project is a logical extension of our work based on current events and needs. We are responding to what we have seen in our world, and our belief that our community is now ready to step up and get involved in learning, unifying, and advocating in this important way. I was immediate past president at the time of the grant application and am now serving as secretary, in addition to being the rabbi of a 7-year-old synagogue community, Congregation Kehillah in North Scottsdale.

-1800s and the communities soon began gathering for holiday services, weddings and funerals. The first temple was built in Tucson in 1910. What makes lifecycle moments special? By Rabbi Dr. Shmuly Yanklowitz
Jewish life is centered around the cycle of life. While daily spiritual living is cherished, it’s the unique moments that bring us together, bring tears to our eyes and remind us of what matters. These moments truly center us. In this review, I will not go into depth about “how to perform” Jewish life cycles. The diversity of traditions and the richness of details are far too comprehensive. Rather, I will touch upon the “why,” addressing the purpose of these lifecycle moments.
BIRTH
There are few moments more spiritually transformative and emotionally precious than the birth of a child. The first major ritual for a Jewish child is the naming.
A name is considered by our revered sages to be much more than just a name. Rather a name is an aspiration, a calling. This generally happens, for a boy at the brit milah and for a girl at a minyan (prayer group) or at the simchat bat. Brit Milah (bris) – Through this ceremony on the eighth day of life (conditions permitting), a baby boy enters the Jewish covenant just as Abraham did 4,000 years ago. G-d partners with humans to complete creation. The Chassidic masters teach that at the cry of a baby at a brit, the heavens are compassionately open for our prayers. It is considered a very sacred moment, not merely a health-based procedure of circumcision. Simchat Bat – At a simchat bat, the baby girl is celebrated and named. This ritual is an anomaly – unlike most other rituals, the simchat bat has no strict ancient tradition, and thus there is tremendous room for creativity at this ceremony. Thus, the parents have room to create their own tradition in welcoming their baby girl into the world. Adoption – The Talmud teaches that an adopted child is considered the same as a birth child. He or she, according to Jewish tradition, is

of parents and the greater community. While one has not embraced any true milestones of adulthood such as having a full-time job, marriage, raising children, meeting financial responsibilities, etc., he or she is now responsible for having an impact upon the Jewish people and broader society.

considered to be a child of the adopted parents in all ways. It is one of the greatest mitzvot in the Torah to care for and adopt a child and to provide a home and family for one who would become lost to the darkness of an orphanage.
PIDYON HABEN
There is a ritual for a boy who is 30 days old to be “redeemed” with silver coins by his father through a Kohen (one of Jewish ritual priestly ancestry). This ritual is only performed for firstborn boys who were born naturally (no C-section) and whose father is not a Kohen himself.
UPSHERIN
Some wait to give their boy his first haircut until 3 years of age. This ceremony is called an upsherin. A primary kabbalistic ( Jewish mystical) explanation is that a boy is trying to confuse the spiritual temptress of his gender. It is a joyous occasion marking a boy’s transition from only being able to receive to now being able to give.
BAR AND BAT MITZVAH
It is only in a limited sense that a 13-year-old Jewish boy and a 12-year-old Jewish girl become “adults.” Developmental psychologists actually now suggest that “emerging adulthood” occurs even later than previously anticipated, at 18 to 26 years old. Rather, a bar and bat mitzvah (son/daughter of responsibility) are considered “adults” in the eyes of tradition. The core years of Jewish obligation and influence that their parents desperately embraced are now over. The adolescent is now expected to evolve from extrinsic motivation (a life of incentives and rewards) toward intrinsic motivation (driven toward the true, good, holy and just) and must now choose her or his own Jewish engagement with the continued guidance, support, and love 32 2015-2016 Resource Guide | Arizona Jewish Life
A Jewish wedding has the potential to be one of the most powerful Jewish rituals. Having led many, there are few that I myself don’t tear up at. It is a reminder of the power of love and union. Families gather together for a happy occasion, which occurs all too rarely; the couple being married, their parents, grandparents, relatives and friends all contemplate their own married lives and look with anticipation to the creation of a new family. There are a few stages to a traditional Jewish wedding: erusin (betrothal on the wedding day), ketubah (statement of obligations), chuppah (the wedding canopy), nesuin (marrying with a ring and witnesses), yichud (marital seclusion and intimacy) and sheva brachot (the seven blessings and celebrations). A Jewish wedding is a celebration of a contractual agreement of shared obligation, responsibility and respect. Love is made concrete into committed actions. Though there are different opinions on the tradition, we break a glass at the end of the ceremony to remind us at the pinnacle of joy that there is brokenness in us and all over the world. It is another way to remind ourselves that while our marriages and families are inherently valuable, they are also vehicles toward enacting social justice and tikkun olam.
DIVORCE
A divorce is actualized through the giving and receiving of a get ( Jewish divorce document). While a divorce is innately a tragic event (a relationship has broken and attempts at repair have failed), it can also be a liberating experience and a source of relief and joy. The procedure is simple and quick, but should be performed by a mesader get (a rabbinic divorce expert). Tragically, today, some “religious” men deny their wives a get, making them agunot (chained women unable to remarry). For this reason, in Orthodox circles, many embrace using a halakhic pre-nuptial agreement to prevent women from being chained to a broken marriage. In Conservative circles, many include the Lieberman clause into the ketubah that gives women an out from the marriage without a get. In most Reform circles, a get is not used at all and is not required to remarry.
CONVERSION
The Jewish community is very open to accepting converts. These individuals who bravely embrace Judaism without having been raised Jewish are to be considered heroes and role models in the community. Jewish law demands that they are cherished, embraced and never shunned. After completing Jewish learning courses, committing to Judaism and the Jewish people, dipping in the mikvah (spiritual bath) and getting circumcised (for boys), converts are celebrated in the community and are no longer considered “converts” but just “normal” Jews. Let us remember this when we encounter those who have converted, and not look with suspicion on them. They have joined with us in the unique and spiritually uplifting rituals of the life cycle.

The rabbis regulated spending. As a way of showing “deference to the poor” (Moed Kattan 27), even the richest people were to be buried plainly so as not to shame the poor, and on certain festive days, girls, especially those from wealthy families, were to wear borrowed clothes so as not to shame those who did not have. Life cycle events should be a time of spiritual reflection creating an ambiance of love by bringing together sacred community. We should work to create more creative and holy celebrations that foster inclusiveness and community building. A wedding, birth, funeral and the like are all opportunities for great spiritual and ethical possibilities and are a time for families to engage in financial introspection (cheshbon ha’kis).
DEATH AND MOURNING
One is buried with great haste and great modesty (humble burial shrouds, modest wooden casket, buried directly in the dirt). There is a mitzvah to join a burial society (chevra kaddishah) to assist the cleaning of the body and to guard a body (as a shomer). While always tragic, the Jewish rituals around death, funerals and mourning can be quite profound. The Jewish tradition understands that the mourning and recovery process from the death of a loved one is a long and gradual process. Unlike other traditions (for example, think of many corporations that expect employees to take no more than three days off for the death of a close relative), Jewish tradition makes the trauma of burial short, and the modest casket ensures that we do not feel obligated to spend huge sums to show our respect for the dead. Instead, we understand that after the burial, the full force of pain and loss hits those mourning with a tremendous impact. At this point, our tradition sustains us and helps us to gradually return to our regular lives through the following plan. Shiva – seven most intense days of mourning Shloshim – first 30 days of mourning Aveilut – year of mourning. While one is an avel (mourner) for a full year for immediate relatives, one only says kaddish for the first 11 months of the year. Unveiling – removing a veil to reveal the tombstone. Yahrtzeit – observing the day of memory each year by saying kaddish and potentially also with tzedakah (charity) and visiting the grave.
MAKING LIFECYCLE MOMENTS MEANINGFUL
Very often today, many embrace the party and social aspects of life cycles (the $25,000 bar mitzvah and $50,000 wedding). Judaism, however, comes to stress the importance of having modest celebrations that focus on family, values, God and spiritual aspirations. We need not spend so much on celebrations. The Talmud (Sanhedrin 29b) teaches that one is not to appear publicly in a way that flaunts his or her wealth, as this lifestyle not only leads to arrogance, but can also shame others and lead them to covet. Histapkut bamuat (being content with less) is a core Jewish value, and Ben Zoma taught that a wealthy individual is one who is content with one’s lot (Pirkei Avot 4:1).

Extending a life For Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz, author of this piece on the lifecycle, teaching about Jewish values and traditions isn’t enough. On June 16 Rabbi Shumly Yanklowitz donated a kidney to young Israeli playwright Yossi Azran. Azran has suffered with kidney disease for 15 years and spent more than two years on dialysis awaiting a kidney donation. Yanklowitz, 33, is the founder and president of the Modern Orthodox social action group Uri L’Tzedek and executive director of the pluralistic Valley Beit Midrash in Phoenix. He’s also the founder and CEO of the Jewish animal welfare institute Shamayim V’aretz. His education and knowledge are extensive. He has master’s degrees in moral development and psychology, and Jewish philosophy; and a doctorate in epistemology, moral development and developmental psychology. He has three rabbinic ordinations: from New York’s Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School, from Efrat Chief Rabbi Shlomo Riskin and a private smicha from Jerusalem-based Rabbi Nathan Lopez Cardozo. But learning and teaching are not enough; he felt he had to act on his belief about saving a life. “I have been teaching about social justice and the value of human dignity and saving human life for many years,” Yanklowitz told The Times of Israel from his hospital bed at New York’s Mt. Sinai Hospital. A kidney donation seemed a perfect mitzvah to put those values into action.

The B’nai Tzedek Youth Philanthropy Program empowers Jewish teens to help change the world through Jewish philanthropy, tzedakah and tikkun olam. Valley teens in grades 7-12 establish a charitable endowment fund in their name and gain knowledge and skills from Jewish sources on giving, financial literacy and modern philanthropy. The organization also helps establish relationships between Jewish teens and Jewish organizations in our community and abroad. Through a wide range of outreach programs, B’nai Tzedek offers teens an opportunity to deepen their commitment to social action as well as a chance to engage in meaningful community service projects, from aiding the needy to enhancing the lives of seniors. “It’s exciting to see the teens accept their privileges and responsibilities of having their own funds,” says Director of Youth Philanthropy Andrea Cohen. “Since the inception of the B’nai Tzedek program in 2005, the 290 B’nai Tzedek Youth Philanthropists have recommended $23,222 from their individual funds to over 150 nonprofit organizations all over the world.” “We’re educating and developing the next generation of leaders in the Jewish community,” adds Sheryl Quen, director of grants and communications for the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Phoenix. “We include opportunities for service learning and a chance to participate on the Youth Philanthropy Board, which encompasses advocacy, leadership, service learning and collective grant-making all rolled into one.” Andrea adds, “Several teens who have created B’nai Tzedek funds have already converted them in to Donor Advised Funds, and are continuing their leadership roles. We invite all Jewish teens to join us in our endeavors, to work with us to improve our community both here and in places around the globe. Founded in 1999, the Jewish Tuition Organization provides need-based scholarships to help Arizona students attend participating K-12 Jewish day schools in metropolitan Phoenix. “Our focus is to raise as much funding as possible to be able to provide meaningful need-based scholarships, which will allow more students to attend our Jewish day schools,” says JTO Executive Director Linda Zell. Supporting the JTO doesn’t cost Arizona taxpayers a penny. Individuals and corporations are allowed to take a dollar for dollar tax credit against their Arizona taxes to benefit the Private School Tax Credit Program. “JTO is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) so you should also check with your tax preparers regarding federal tax benefits,” Zell says. This year the JTO has raised almost $3.8 million dollars. Over 90% is awarded in scholarships every year. For 201516 JTO anticipates helping more than 550 students at seven schools. A past scholarship recipient, Shauna Tasa, presently a law student at ASU, says, “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the help of the JTO.” Ben Cooper, a founder of the JTO, says, “Taking the Arizona tax credit is easy and cost free, and it helps provide the gift of a Jewish day school education. I take the maximum credit every year.” With tuition and enrollments increasing every year, it is evident that the students need financial aid, which is why it is so important for the entire community to support the JTO, explains Zell.

Guide to Jewish Holidays
Rosh Hashanah (Sept. 14-15, 2015) Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is celebrated each year on the first day of Tishrei, early in the fall. The day is a special time of rejoicing as we wish each other L’Shanah Tovah, a good year. It is also a solemn day because Rosh Hashanah is not only the day on which we celebrate the creation of the world, it is also important as the Day of Remembrance, when the sound of the shofar calls each of us to recount our deeds of the past year in preparation for repentance on Yom Kippur. The Rosh Hashanah festival meal table is set specially, as for Shabbat. Throughout the High Holy Days, the challah is to be a round spiral or “turban” loaf rather than a long twisted one. The round challah symbolizes the cyclical nature of life, the seasons and the Jewish year.
Yom Kippur (Sept. 23, 2015) Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is a solemn fast day. We pray for forgiveness from G-d and repent sincerely for our sins during the past year. Families gather for a plentiful if simple meal before sundown on the eve of this holy day. At the end of the meal, festival candles are blessed and the fast begins for all adults in the household. The family then attends worship services at which Kol Nidre is chanted. While children under the age of 13 do not fast on Yom Kippur, meals for children should be Spartan to introduce the notion of fasting while still providing proper nutrition. At the conclusion of Yom Kippur, families and friends gather for a light break-the-fast meal.
Sukkot (Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 2015) Beginning five days after Yom Kippur, this seven-day festival (eight days in the Diaspora) is a celebration of the abundance with which G-d has blessed us. We are encouraged to eat our meals in the sukkah throughout the festival. The sukkah is a temporary dwelling covered with leafy branches and decorated with fruits and vegetables, symbols of the harvest. The sukkah is a reminder of the temporary dwellings our ancestors in ancient Israel used to live in the fields during the harvest. It also reminds us of the booths in which G-d caused the Children of Israel to dwell during their wanderings in the desert after the exodus from slavery in Egypt. Meals throughout Sukkot include generous portions of fruit and vegetables, highlighting the importance of an abundant harvest.
Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah (Oct. 5-6, 2015) The days immediately following the end of the festival of Sukkot are the semiindependent holidays Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Some liberal congregations celebrate both in one day as Atzeret-Simchat Torah. Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah formally end the season of the High Holy Days. Simchat Torah is also the day on which we celebrate the renewal of the annual cycle of Torah readings. recommence the cycle by reading the opening verses of Genesis. We mark the occasion with hakafot, joyous circuits of marching around the synagogue with Torah scrolls, flags and banners.
Hanukkah (Dec. 7-14, 2015) The festival of Hanukkah lasts for eight days, beginning on the 25th of Kislev, which can fall anywhere from late November to late December. The holiday celebrates the victory of the Maccabees, Jewish military leaders who rebelled against the Greek-Syrian King Antiochus, who forbade the practice of Judaism and desecrated the great Temple in Jerusalem. The word “Hanukkah” means “dedication,” and the holy day commemorates the rededication of the Temple after the Maccabees’ victory. The Talmud tells us that the festival lasts eight days because, when the Maccabees rededicated the Temple, they found only enough holy oil to light the eternal lamp for one day. A miracle was wrought, however, and the oil lasted eight days, long enough for new consecrated oil to be made. Another explanation is that when the Temple was rededicated, the Jews immediately celebrated the festivals of Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret, lasting a total of eight days. They did this because Antiochus had prevented them from observing Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret at the proper time. Foods fried in oil, reminiscent of the legend of the miracle of the oil in the Temple, are served during Hanukkah.
Tu B’Shevat (Jan. 25, 2016) Tu B’Shevat takes its name from its date on the Hebrew calendar, the 15th of Shevat. It is called the “Birthday of Trees,” and it celebrates the first beginnings of spring. Tree-planting is a common activity on Tu B’Shevat. A tradition of holding a Tu B’Shevat seder, celebrating different kinds of fruits that grow in Israel, has become popular in recent years.
Purim (March 24, 2016) Purim celebrates the salvation of the Jews in ancient Persia from the wicked Haman, through the leadership of Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai. Purim takes place on the 14th day of Adar. (In the case of a leap year, it takes place during the extra month of Adar II.) Costumes are often worn on Purim and gifts of food – mishloach manot – are delivered door to door. The story of Purim is found in the Book of Esther, often referred to as “The Megillah.” When the name of Haman is read, people stomp their feet, hiss, boo or shake noisemakers called groggers to obliterate his name.

Passover, Pesach in Hebrew, is the eight-day observance commemorating the freedom and exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. A time of family gatherings and lavish ritual meals called seders, the story of Passover is retold through the reading of the Haggadah. With its special foods, songs and customs, the seder is the focal point of the Passover celebration.
Lag B’Omer is celebrated on the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer, the 18th of Iyar. According to the Torah, we are obligated to count the days from Passover to Shavuot. This period is known as the Counting of the Omer. An omer is a unit of measure of a sheaf of grain. The counting is intended to remind us of the link between Passover, which commemorates the Exodus, and Shavuot, which commemorates the giving of the Torah. It reminds us that the redemption from slavery was not complete until we received the Torah.

On April 12, 1951, the Knesset passed a resolution proclaiming the 27th of Nissan “the Holocaust and Ghetto Uprising Remembrance Day – a day of perpetual remembrance for the House of Israel.” The date was chosen to fall between the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943 and the observance of Israel Independence Day. In Israel the day is marked by various observances including two minutes of silence signaled by the wailing of sirens on the morning of the observance.
Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) is the fourth of the new holidays added to the Jewish calendar since the establishment of the State of Israel. The day commemorates the re-unification of Jerusalem in 1967, when the Old City came under Israeli control.

Yom Hazikaron is Israel’s day of remembrance for the men and women, boys and girls who have lost their lives due to war or terrorism. It is celebrated on the fourth day of the Jewish month of Iyar. As the sun sets that evening, Israel turns to the celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut.

Yom Ha’atzmaut (May 12, 2016) Yom Ha’atzmaut is the national independence day of Israel, commemorating the Jewish state’s declaration of independence in 1948. Celebrated annually on 5th of Iyar, it centers around the declaration of the state of Israel by David Ben-Gurion in Tel Aviv on May 14, 1948 (5 Iyar, 5708) and the end of the British Mandate of Palestine.
Shavuot occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan. Shavuot commemorates the anniversary of the day G-d gave the Torah to Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai. It is one of the Shalosh Regalim, the three Biblical pilgrimage festivals. It marks the conclusion of the counting of the omer. Traditions on Shavuot include all-night study of the Torah on the first night and hearing the Ten Commandments in synagogue. It’s also traditional to eat dairy meals. The thought behind this custom is that the Jewish people had just received the laws of kashrut and had not yet had time to apply them to their animal slaughter.
Tisha B’Av is a fast day that commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples. It has also became a day of general mourning for other major disasters that have befallen the Jewish people, including the Edict of Expulsion from England in 1290, the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, and the mass deportation of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II.
