Goldberg, MSW, e-mail: wendy@nojcc.org United States, as well as the only regional Jewish child social services agency in the country. Our Funding The Jewish Children’s Regional Service is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency. As a “grass roots” organization, we receive the majority of the funding for our $1,000,000 – $1,500,000 budget from individual donors. The JCRS receives no United Way funds and no government grants. While Jewish Federation allocations comprise 5% of our budget income, the remaining 95% comes from individual contributions, private foundations, and income created by our permanent named scholarship funds. Each year, 1,500 – 2,000 households made donations to our programs. All donations to JCRS are tax deductible. JCRS is audited annually by the New Orleans accounting firm Duplantier, Hrapmann, Hogan and Maher. Our Board 100 – 150 JCRS Board members represent 40 – 50 large and small Jewish communities throughout our seven states. Some Board members are past aid recipients. Some were reared in the former Jewish Children’s Home or are children or grandchildren of these alumni. Many of the Board members serve on our Education and Special Needs committees. They also represent our agency throughout the seven states. Our Clients Our clients come from Jewish families who reside throughout the seven states. Most of these families are struggling with financial, health and learning problems. A large percentage of the children we serve (approximately 40%) come from single-parent households. Many come from dependent, at-risk families who struggle to provide the necessary care, supervision and stability to meet their children’s needs. JCRS also reaches out to children from immigrant families and those serving in the military. In today’s society, most families are only one job loss, a handicapped child, one major illness or injury, a marital separation, or one devastating hurricane away from financial difficulty. When those challenges occur, whether it is with college aid, camp scholarships, Hanukkah gifts, or financial subsidies for special

Uptown

The Jewish Community Center’s long, rich history dates back to 1855 when the Young Men’s Hebrew and Literary Society was formed. In 1891, the Young Men’s Hebrew Association was organized by the members of the fashionable Harmony Club. A building was erected in 1895 on the corner of Clio Street and St. Charles Avenue and was used by all citizens of New Orleans for debates and musical activities. In 1939, a new building, to replace the original which was destroyed by fire, opened its doors on Clio Street as the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association. A second fire in 1947 destroyed that building. In 1948, the agency relocated in the Jewish Children’s Home at 5342 St. Charles Avenue and changed its name to the Jewish Community Center of New Orleans. The agency’s facility remained a part of the Jewish Children’s Home until 1966 when that building was replaced by the present facility. A $4 million renovation of the Uptown facility was completed in 1997. In 1986 a satellite facility was established in Metairie to better serve the membership. The Center continues to serve the Metairie members with the new state-of-the-art facility which opened January 2003 at 3747 W. Esplanade. The Jewish Community Center continues to serve the entire New Orleans community with quality programming in the areas of pre-school education, physical education, public affairs, political forums, lectures and especially Jewish education. We truly are the CENTER of our community... The JCC offers state-of the-art fitness centers, a 4-star rated Nursery School, popular summer camps, classes and sports leagues for all ages, teen programs, senior exercise and recreational opportunities, an Alzheimer's respite program, Jewish enrichment, community cultural events, and so much more -- all while striving to promote and ensure the strength and well-being of our Jewish community. Our Mission The mission of the Greater New Orleans Jewish Community Center is to promote and ensure the well-being of our Jewish community and to instill an understanding of Judaism and its heritage by providing a Center where all can enjoy, learn, experience and share in quality activities in a Jewish environment.

Community Resource Guide Our History Jewish Family Service was initially created when the Jewish Children’s Home closed in 1948. Jewish Family Service became a separate organization, with its own 501 (C)(3) status in 1976. Take a look through our Newsletters on our Publications page for a glimpse into our history. Since then, the scope of the agency has increased tremendously. JFS helps the community strengthen the family and the individual to reach their full potential through various programs and services including: providing individual and group counseling, educating our young people about depression and suicide prevention, promoting independence for the elderly, providing case management, and assisting in adoptions. organization dedicated to the health, education, spiritual, and cultural identity of the Jewish people worldwide. The Work of the Federation It is not easy to concisely explain all the ways in which the Federation impacts our Jewish Community. The Federation works with all levels of our Jewish Community to create and sustain a strong Jewish present and future. The local work of the Federation tends to the specific needs of our local Jewish community. The Jewish Federation serves as a center for Jewish resources. In addition, the Federation works to strengthen Jewish identity through education with programs such as the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School. The Jewish Federation of Greater Baton Rouge works closely with many regional partner organizations. These organizations connect us to the larger Southern Jewish community. Some of our regional work can be seen through scholarship assistance granted to many young people enabling them to attend Jacobs Camp, Kutz Leadership Camp, The NFTY National Convention, and to participate in Israel Trips. The Federation also serves the greater good of our national and international Jewish communities. While there is much to be done here in Baton Rouge, the needs of Jews around the world, most especially in Israel, the former Soviet Union, and Ethiopia, remains great. Federation has maintained its level of funding to United Jewish Communities, our partner in providing aid to Jews throughout the world.

Touro is known for its quality and excellence. And while we're firmly rooted in our unique history, the path we've taken has always been a progressive one. In 1923, Touro was one of only fifteen hospitals in the country approved to use insulin to treat diabetes. Today, thousands of people from our community take advantage of our free diabetes screenings and education seminars. In 1929, Touro was one of the first hospitals in the United States to have a physical therapy department. Today, the Touro Rehabilitation Center is one of the premier rehabilitation centers in the country, offering medical services that promote healing and recovery for people with orthopedic conditions, those who have had strokes, brain and spinal cord injuries. Our Family Birthing Center, equipped with labor/delivery/recovery suites, acute neonatal intensive care services and a comprehensive infant security system, has been the hospital of choice for generations of New Orleanians. Touro's Cancer, Diabetes and Heart Disease programs emphasize prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and support for patients and their families.

Magen David Adom’s story is your story. It’s the story of Israeli EMTs and paramedics who devote their lives to saving lives. And it’s the story of Americans who feel the urgency of Israeli ambulance sirens from across the globe and join MDA’s rescue efforts with their generous support. Magen David Adom is Israel’s ambulance, blood-services, and disaster-relief organization, serving as emergency medical first responders for the state’s more than 8 million people. MDA is the only organization mandated by the Israeli government to serve in this role, but it’s not a government agency, so it relies on people like you for funding. Through your gift, you’re saving lives. American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) is the largest supporter of MDA worldwide.

Community Resource Guide B’nai B’rith of Greater New Orleans, Unit #182 AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps strengthens the Jewish community's fight against the causes and effects of poverty in the United States. We do this by engaging participants in service and community building that inspires them to become lifelong leaders for social change whose work for justice is rooted in and nourished by Jewish values. AVODAH was developed as an opportunity for people to integrate Judaism and social activism in ways that nourish their ideals and provide them with the capacity for stronger, enduring activism. Founding The organization was founded by Rabbi David Rosenn, and a group of activists and educators from across the spectrum of the American Jewish community. Some were religious; others not. Some worked in the nonprofit world; others were educators or rabbis or graduate students. They were united by the sense that there was a disconnect between their involvement in Jewish life and their commitment to working for social change. Dedicated to the notion of "AVODAH" — a Hebrew word which encompasses spiritual, communal and work-related "service" — they joined forces to create the first and only Jewish service corps. From Brooklyn to New Orleans Launched in Brooklyn in 1998 with one house of nine participants, the program doubled within a few years. In 2002, AVODAH began a new program in Washington, D.C. which quickly grew from nine participants to fifteen. In 2005, AVODAH opened its third site in Chicago with 9 participants. In 2008 we brought AVODAH to New Orleans, opening our fourth site. Our move to New Orleans was a response to the serious need for longer-term volunteers to stabilize and advance the city’s anti-poverty organizations, to the New Orleans Jewish community’s need for new residents with fresh energy and a commitment to the community’s recovery, and to the national Jewish community’s desire to contribute in a concrete and effective way to doing something about the unacceptable levels of devastation and social dislocation that still prevail in New Orleans years after the storms.

Community Resource Guide Welcome to the Hadassah N’awlins Chapter! Like the City of New Orleans, we are magical, powerful, and dynamic. We use our Southern charm to adapt Hadassah’s mission to the unique circumstances and needs of our members and community at large. Our membership is growing by the day, and we provide groundbreaking health education programs on breast cancer and heart disease. As members of the Legislative Agenda for Woman (“LAW”), Hadassah N’awlins seeks to improve the lives of women, children, and families in Louisiana through advocacy initiatives. HADASSAH, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer women's organization whose members are motivated and inspired to strengthen their partnership with Israel, ensure Jewish continuity, and realize their potential as a dynamic force in American society. Founded in 1912, Hadassah retains the passion and timeless values of its founder, Henrietta Szold, Jewish scholar and activist, who was dedicated to Judaism, Zionism, and the American ideal. Committed to the centrality of Israel based on the renaissance of the Jewish people in its historic homeland, Hadassah promotes the unity of the Jewish people. In Israel, Hadassah initiates and supports pace-setting health care, education and youth institutions, and land development to meet the country's changing needs. In the United States, Hadassah enhances the quality of American and Jewish life through its education and Zionist youth programs, promotes health awareness, and provides personal enrichment and growth for its members.

Community Resource Guide The Jewish Genealogical Society (JGS) of New Orleans is a non-profit organization for those who desire to research their Jewish roots in Louisiana and worldwide. Our purpose is to bring members together to share information and ideas, and to periodically present programs which will assist with such research, providing members with a broad base of knowledge regarding resources and research skills. The two main projects of the JGSNO at this time are: 1.) stocking a Jewish Genealogy Research section in the Special Collections area of the East Jefferson Regional Library; most of the books donated thus far have come from the private collection of the Society's President and Vice President; and, 2.) indexing of burials in all Jewish Cemeteries in the New Orleans area and in other areas in South Louisiana. In addition to books, CD's and videos, the library collection also includes issues of other Jewish genealogy society newsletters worldwide. Krewe du Jieux is a free spirited parade organization committed to deflating the stereotypes that have historically been aimed at the Jewish people. Through laughter, satire and holy intentions, our goal is to empower Jieuxs to co-opt these negative stereotypes, thereby eradicating them in our own minds and in the minds of others. Established in 1996 as the first Jewish Mardi Gras krewe in New Orleans, Krewe du Jieux sponsors a variety of events throughout the year in addition to our annual Mardi Gras parade, including second-line parades for Chanukah and Purim, a Passover KreweSeder, a Rosh/Kippur Apology Party and the wonderfully irreverent “Running of the Jieuxs” second-line parade following our annual coronation of royalty.

LimmudFest New Orleans E-mail: info@limmudnola.org Web: www.limmudnola.org LimmudFest New Orleans is a weekend festival of Big Tent Jewish learning, arts, culture and spirituality — all planned by volunteers. It is part of a global movement inspired by the idea that when Jews from diverse backgrounds come together to celebrate and learn about everything Jewish, the entire community is enriched. Limmud is an international charity dedicated to making some of the world’s most dynamic Jewish educators, performers and teachers, working in a variety of educational styles – lectures, workshops, text-study sessions, film, meditation, discussions, exhibits and performance – accessible to everyone, no matter what their level of Jewish knowledge or commitment to Jewish life. Wherever you find yourself, Limmud will take you one step further on your Jewish journey. Limmud’s mission is informed by the following values: Learning Learning embraces personal development, knowledge, and skills. Learning changes people, inspires action and opens new worlds. There are many inspirations that can offer opportunities for learning. Everyone can be a teacher and everyone should be a student. We encourage the creation of a learning environment in which people are able to reflect and grow. Community and Mutual Responsibility Limmud is a community of learning. We can achieve more together than we can individually. We both gain and should give something back to the Jewish and the wider community. Enabling Connections We aim to create opportunities for communities and individuals to connect. We recognize the strength of providing a space where spiritual, emotional, and intellectual connections are made. Expanding Jewish Horizons Limmud strives to create collective and communal experiences, through which we strengthen and develop our Jewish identity.

Community Resource Guide Participation Volunteerism is a key feature of almost everything we do. We are all responsible for each other and for the communities we create; everyone has an important contribution to make. We encourage participants to take an active part in all we do.

LKC is held in the highest regard internationally and is accepted by all major Kashrut agencies. The LKC is listed among major kosher information bureaus on the web, such as www.kashrut.com.

Diversity We value diversity in all that we do. We value choice in form, content and style. We believe in the richness of our diverse community and create crosscommunal and cross-generational experiences. We value accessibility, and aim to be accessible to all. We encourage people not to stereotype others.

Empowerment We inspire people to be ambitious about their contribution. We challenge people and trust them to rise to that challenge. We see the potential of individuals and communities and support their development. We empower people to make choices and provide the information to make informed choices. Power lies with the participant. Commitment to Respect Limmud expects all participants to be respectful of one another and to recognize that all volunteers are also participants. Personal attacks are not acceptable within session material. To ensure that informed choices can be made, we ask presenters to provide biographies.

The Louisiana Kosher Committee – LKC - is a community service organization whose mission is the maintenance of a high level of quality Kosher supervision. It is composed of Rabbis and lay leaders, providing kosher certification and supervision for caterers, wholesale and retail food vendors and food production companies in Louisiana and the Gulf South. The LKC was founded in 2000 by a cross-section of kosher-observant people in the New Orleans area. Currently, the LKC supervises two local eating establishments, as well as many food and chemical production facilities. We have also supervised over eighty events at numerous local hotels and institutions. In addition, LKC Rabbis coordinate with international kosher agencies (such as the OU,OK, Kof-K, Star-K) to supervise most of the kosher food production in the Gulf South. * The placement of the LKC Kosher symbol or Kosher letter on a product insures the consumer that it was produced under the highest standards of kosher certification. Our services include: 1. Initial inspection of the plant facility 2. Recommendations to bring the facility into compliance with kosher rules. 3. Certification and ongoing monitoring of the facility 4. Assisting companies to become certified with the national Kosher agencies, helping our clients understand when they will most benefit from LKC certification and when to go with a national agency. Touro Synagogue 4238 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans, LA 70115 Phone: 504-895-4843 Fax: 504-897-0237 Rabbi: Alexis D. Berk E-mail: info@tourosynagogue.com Web: www.tourosynagogue.com Our Story Begins in 1828, a mere 25 years after the Louisiana Purchase, when the founders of what would eventually become Touro Synagogue started the first Jewish temple outside of the 13 original colonies and the sixth oldest synagogue in the country. According to the Code Noire (1724), Jews should have been excluded from the French territory of Louisiana. But the business acumen of Jewish merchants proved more important to the financial future of New Orleans than upholding the rules of the French government. Little by little, hardworking Southern Jews settled into a welcoming environment. When President Thomas Jefferson negotiated the 1803 Louisiana Purchase with Napoleon, and Louisiana came under American jurisdiction, Jews acquired the right to freely inhabit what would become the 18th state in the Union, reveling in the value of religious freedom promised by the American Constitution. Touro Synagogue’s congregation is the result of a union between two original congregations, Congregation Gates of Mercy and Congregation Dispersed of Judah. Shanarai-Chasset (Congregation Gates of Mercy) was founded in 1828 thanks to the efforts of a proactive visitor, Jacob Solis, who fulfilled the needs of the Jewish community by creating a space of worship during the High Holy Days. Their first synagogue was located on North Rampart Street, between St. Louis and Conti Streets, west of the French Quarter. Gates of Mercy followed the Ashkenazic rituals, leading some Portuguese members, preferring the Sephardic tradition, separated and formed Nefutzoth Yehudah (Congregation Dispersed of Judah) in 1846. Congregation Dispersed of Judah moved into the renovated Christ Church building at the corner of Bourbon and Canal Streets in 1846. On February 6, 1881, these two congregations reunited and moved into a building on Carondelet Street. The merger strengthened the Jewish community in New Orleans at a time when both congregations were struggling economically and recovering from the loss of many lives to the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1878. The new congregation eventually took the name Touro Synagogue after the benefactor of both communities, merchant-philanthropist Judah Touro. Judah Touro had lived in New Orleans since 1801, coming originally from Rhode Island where his father was the leader of the historic Newport congregation, regarded as America’s Oldest Synagogue. In addition to being a benefactor of many Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant charities, Judah Touro was a hero in the War of 1812, co-builder of the Bunker Hill Monument, founder of the First Free Public Library in America, and founder of Touro Infirmary and the Touro Home for the Aged. Touro Synagogue joined the Reform movement in 1891 and has been a leader in the Reform movement ever since. The current sanctuary building was designed by a well-known local architect Emile Weil, who won the congregation’s design competition at the ripe age of 29. The synagogue was completed in 1908 and dedicated on January 1, 1909. Our sanctuary holds a magnificent Aron Kodesh, given to Congregation Dispersed of Judah in 1847 by Judah Touro. Rabbi Isaac Leucht, 1881-1914; Rabbi Emil Leipziger, 1914-1947; Rabbi Leo A. Bergman, 1948-1976; Rabbi David Goldstein, 1978-2005; Rabbi Andrew Busch, 2005-2008; Rabbi Alexis Berk, 2008-present. Rabbi Alexis Berk accepted the pulpit at Touro Synagogue in July 2008. Although raised in rural Massachusetts, Rabbi Berk is a southerner at heart. She explains, “The complexity and texture of the New Orleans landscape illuminates the elemental beauty of the Touro community. The fact that Touro is a 180-yearold synagogue belies its strong desire for innovation and growth. The professional team and congregational leaders embody passion for this community – within the walls of the congregation and beyond. Resilience, inter- connectedness, and strength are the core of this distinctive place.”

THE

Community Resource Guide Touro Synagogue and the larger Jewish community in New Orleans have responded with open arms to their first senior, female rabbi. Rabbi Berk brings a fresh perspective, a keen intellect, a pervasive sense of humor, and a compassionate heart to her role as the spiritual leader of Touro’s congregation. Her energetic leadership heralds a new and exciting chapter in Touro’s history. The Touro Congregation has always been blessed by its cantors, who have led worship, shaped liturgy, and inspired congregants both children young and old. Especially notable have been the contributions of Cantor Steven Dubov, Cantor Jordan Franzel, Cantor Seth Warner, Cantor Billy Tiep, Cantor Jason Kaufman, and Cantor Jamie Marx. Each one helped further develop our musical program by enhancing our congregational offerings through our choir, Jazz Fest Shabbat Worship, educational programs, and community leadership. Our current cantor, Cantor David Mintz has continued to help us grow by creating meaningful opportunities for communal singing, enhancing worship and serving as a leader in areas of adult education and community programming.

Home of the "Original"

The Northshore Jewish Congregation grew from a small chavurah which, in the early 1980s, envisioned the possibility of a synagogue on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. Members of the chavurah began talking the synagogue into existence and held its first community-wide Passover Seder in the mid-1980s. By the Fall of 1995, the first Shabbat service was held in a local Methodist Church. Shortly thereafter, the synagogue grew to 40 charter members. Within 10 short years, a 10,000 square foot building was purchased, a Rabbi was hired and the NJC became a full-service synagogue in a central location. The Rabbinic leadership evolved from student Rabbis to part-time Rabbis, and finally a full-time Rabbi. The ritual furnishings, ark, ner tamid, lecterns and most importantly, the Torahs, were donated. Today, the NJC has grown to more than 100 families. Volunteer musicians lead the congregation in prayer and song at most Shabbat and Holiday services. Past innovative programs include creative services that are popular with congregants of all ages, including "Blue Jeans Shabbat," "Pizza and Ice Cream Shabbat," "Chardonnay Shabbat," "Nature Walk Shabbat," as well as “Zoo-mobile and Canoe Havdalah” events. The NJC enables its members to develop a relationship with G-d through communal worship, study of Torah, religious education and assembly. The Religious School was chosen by the Institute of Southern Jewish Living to implement its pilot Religious School Curriculum. Each of the B’nai Mitzvah and Confirmation students completes a Tikkun Olam Project and the confirmands write and conduct their entire service. The NJC is truly a congregation of volunteers, who put in countless hours because of the love for Judaism and the desire for a strong Jewish community, committed to the values and conduct of the individual, the family and the society in which we live.

The Philosophy Chabad-Lubavitch is a philosophy, a movement, and an organization. It is considered to be the most dynamic force in Jewish life today. Lubavitch appropriately means the “city of brotherly love” The word “Chabad” is a Hebrew acronym for the three intellectual faculties of chochmah—wisdom, binah—comprehension and da’at—knowledge. The movement’s system of Jewish religious philosophy, the deepest dimension of G‑d’s Torah, teaches understanding and recognition of the Creator, the role and purpose of creation, and the importance and unique mission of each creature. This philosophy guides a person to refine and govern his or her every act and feeling through wisdom, comprehension and knowledge. The word “Lubavitch” is the name of the town in White Russia where the movement was based for more than a century. Appropriately, the word Lubavitch in Russian means the “city of brotherly love.” The name Lubavitch conveys the essence of the responsibility and love engendered by the Chabad philosophy toward every single Jew. The Movement Following its inception 250 years ago, the Chabad-Lubavitch movement—a branch of Hasidism—swept through Russia and spread in surrounding countries as well. It provided scholars with answers that eluded them, and simple farmers with a love that had been denied them. Eventually the philosophy of ChabadLubavitch and its adherents reached almost every corner of the world and affected almost every facet of Jewish life. The Leadership No person or detail was too small or insignificant for their love and dedication The movement is guided by the teachings of its seven leaders (“Rebbes”), beginning with Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi of righteous memory (1745– 1812). These leaders expounded upon the most refined and delicate aspects of Jewish mysticism, creating a corpus of study thousands of books strong. They personified the age-old Biblical qualities of piety and leadership. And they concerned themselves not only with Chabad-Lubavitch, but with the totality of Jewish life, spiritual and physical. No person or detail was too small or insignificant for their love and dedication. In our generation, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory (1902–1994), known simply as “the Rebbe,” guided post-holocaust Jewry to safety from the ravages of that devastation. The Organization The origins of today’s Chabad-Lubavitch organization can be traced to the early 1940s, when the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn of righteous memory (1880–1950), appointed his son-in-law and later successor, Rabbi Menachem Mendel, to head the newly founded educational and social service arms of the movement. Today 4,000 full-time emissary families direct more than 3,300 institutions Motivated by his profound love for every Jew and spurred by his boundless optimism and self-sacrifice, the Rebbe set into motion a dazzling array of programs, services and institutions to serve every Jew. Today 4,000 full-time emissary families apply 250-year-old principles and philosophy to direct more than 3,300 institutions (and a workforce that numbers in the tens of thousands) dedicated to the welfare of the Jewish people worldwide.

Come visit the JCC Nursery School! As you tour the facility, see our teachers in action and watch our curriculum come to life, you'll understand all of the things that set our nursery school apart and make it so very special! Beginning on October 11 and running through May 2, weekly tours will be given on Tuesdays at 9:30 AM. Reservations are not necessary. Our Community Embraces Children Our community embraces children through education, sports and family activities. Located in the Uptown JCC, the JCC Nursery school has acted as a pillar of early childhood education in New Orleans for over half-a-century. Outside of the Nursery school, pre-school age children can participate in Early Childhood Enrichment classes, sports programs, family activities, summer camps and more. Sign up on the Interest List to indicate your interest in registering for the JCC Nursery School and receiving information and updates about our program and curriculum. Classes at the JCC Nursery Finding the right class for your child poses dilemmas for every parent. Do you want your toddler to be the oldest in his or her class? What does it mean to be the youngest among a group of Pre-K students? Do boys and girls face different hurdles? Should a child attend school five days a week? No test can answer those questions. But the experienced, professional teachers of the JCC Nursery School can help smooth the path for children of different abilities and temperaments. The JCC keeps teacher-student ratios small, matching those of accredited schools nationwide. With tailored classroom activities to meet the social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs of individual children, the JCC offers a range of attendance options based on age, with three, and five-day-a-week programs, as well as a half day option. Before and after care are also available. Our program features: • Jewish Culture • Social Interaction • Ethical Teaching • Creative Arts and Cooking • Language Development • Science • Story & Circle Time • Reading & Math Readiness • Music Education • Shabbat & Holiday Celebrations • Physical Education and Swimming in our fully equipped gymnasium and pool THE

Esplanade Ave., Metairie, LA 70002 Phone: 504-885-4339 Fax: 504-885-2603 Director: Melanie Blitz E-mail: mblitz.10D@yahoo.com Program It is the philosophy of the Louise Hayem Manheim Nursery School that early childhood should be a time of fun, warmth, security, exploring and discovery. Nursery school children are creative and receptive; the staff strives to nurture and encourage these qualities in the children who attend. The Nursery School’s purpose is to provide an atmosphere that encourages social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth and development of the child as a whole. The program emphasizes Jewish values and practices, customs, ceremonies of the Shabbat, High Holy Days and other Jewish holidays throughout the year. Although the program is designed for all Jewish children in the Greater New Orleans area, we are open to the community. Planned within the framework of philosophy and purpose, Louise Hayem Manheim Nursery School’s curriculum gives children the opportunity to explore, experiment, manipulate, observe and question. The children work with learning materials that promote understanding and perceptual properties such as colors, shapes, numbers and science concepts. Language development and reading readiness is promoted through dramatic play, conversation, journal “writing”, portfolio development, stories and letter introduction. Creative art materials encourage children to experiment and explore sensory experiences. Outdoor activities, creative body movement and music help the children develop gross motor coordination. Other activities include field trips throughout the community, food preparation and gardening. Individual class curriculum will be explained in more detail at the September “Eat’n Meet”. Afternoon enrichment activities include: Computer, Yoga, Conversational Spanish, Gym Rompers, Reading Readiness, and Creative Art & Cooking.

Horowitz, e-mail: jewishstudies@tulane.edu Jewish Studies represents an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Jews, their history, religion, language, thought, culture, literature, and music. The Tulane University Jewish Studies program was recently ranked 9th in the nation. The Tulane program uses methods of history to gain accurate insights into the Jews' past; sociological analysis to find the larger patterns of Jewish behavior and social interaction; and the study of philosophy to examine the comprehensive understandings of humanity and nature proposed by Jewish thinkers. In addition, language, literature and musicology are studied in order to explore the diverse cultural creations of the Jews and the method of social anthropology allows students to characterize Jewish religion and to define its impact upon the lives of its past and present adherents. Through these several approaches, Jewish Studies attempts to comprehend the Jewish experience in antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the present, and to examine the identities and ways of life that Jews have developed in order to make sense of the worlds in which they have lived.

The Greater New Orleans Jewish Community deserves its own Periodical from cover to cover with no deception in between. We have made it our mission to deliver that product for 21 years running. There’s only one difference, we’re getting better at it. We don’t put NOLA on our front covers to trick readers and advertisers of its content. You won’t find Alabama news and advertisements in more than 50% of our publication. The last time we checked, there isn’t any Bama in Louisiana. Ask any L.S.U. Tiger fan! We continue to shine a JEWISH LIGHTon the important stories around the globe and in your backyard, delivering the news you need to be aware of so that you can be a part of the conversation. With the participation of our local Jewish Community and JTA, the definitive, trusted global source of breaking news, investigative reporting, in-depth analysis, opinion and features on current events and issues of interest to the Jewish people, THE JEWISH LIGHT delivers News at your fingertips wherever you are. With correspondents in New Orleans, New York, Washington, Jerusalem, Moscow and dozens of other cities around the globe, THE JEWISH LIGHT and JTA are able to provide in-depth coverage of political, economic and social developments affecting Jews in North and South America, Israel, Europe, Africa, Australia and around the world. Our comprehensive website at www.thejewishlight.org carries the most current edition of THE JEWISH LIGHT along with extensive reporting that also shines a spotlight on the cultural happenings, influential thinkers and leaders, and milestone events that are defining the Jewish experience today.
