Southeast Waterproofing New Orleans has many examples of spectacular architecture, in many cases over a century old! But if you need to restore or clean the exterior, you can’t call just anyone to work on it. You need a recognized professional, such as Southeast Waterproofing, owned by Scott Heidingsfelder. Scott advises that inappropriate cleaning and coating treatments can be a major cause of damage to historic buildings. Cleaning may sometimes be followed by the application of a water-repellent coating. However, unless these procedures are carried out under the guidance and supervision of a professional, they may result in irrevocable damage to your historic building. Southeast Waterproofing is well-versed on the variety of cleaning methods and materials that are available for use on the exterior of historic buildings. There are several major reasons for cleaning a historic building including the need to improve the appearance of the building, by removing dirt, address deterioration by repairing cracks
and water intrusion, and certainly to provide a clean surface to accurately match the original exterior material, especially when dealing with masonry. Historic masonry includes stone, brick, architectural terra cotta, cast stone, concrete and concrete block. Most people would consider that water is the most effective tool in cleaning any property, however in the case of many historic properties, water, especially high velocity water streams, such as a pressure washer, is likely one of the most damaging tools that could be used in cleaning the property. If the building isn’t watertight, any moisture that gets in through the exterior can exasperate damage and cracks in the exterior, especially the complex masonry, marble, and other soft stones on many historic properties. Abrasive cleaning methods are not appropriate for use on historic masonry buildings, either, because abrasive cleaning methods are just that—abrasive. Since the abrasives do not differentiate between the dirt and
the masonry, they can also remove the outer surface of the masonry at the same time, and result in permanently damaging the exterior. Abrasion of carved details causes a rounding of sharp corners and other loss of delicate features, while abrasion of polished surfaces removes the polished finish of stone. Beyond the potential of causing catastrophic damage to their historic building, property owners also need to consider the safety of the environment when planning to rehabilitate the property. Southeast Waterproofing recognizes the potential effect of any method proposed for cleaning historic properties should be carefully evaluated. Chemical cleaners and paint removers may damage trees, shrubs, grass, and plants. Angelo Brocato Angelo Brocato Original Italian Ice Cream Parlor has been operated by the Brocato family in New Orleans, Louisiana for over one hundred years, but our history is steeped in the Sicilian traditions that could be found in the capital city of Palermo at the end of the 19th century. Along with his brother Giuseppi, our grandfather, Angelo, began his apprenticeship in one of the city’s most elegant ice cream parlors at 12 years old. Through shuffling ice and salt to master chefs and choosing the ripest and finest fruits for producing granita, he learned the special recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation. As the Mediterranean fall turned to winter, all production efforts turned to baking and candy-making. During these cold seasons, young Angelo

began to master the production of assorted biscotti, torrone, frutta Marturana (marzipan) and many other confections. Most importantly, he learned the necessary techniques to manufacture the famed cannoli Siciliana; these techniques and recipes are still used today in our North Carrollton shop.

The Columns is no ordinary hotel. Built in 1893 as a private residence, it was converted into a boarding house during World War I. In 1953, a local family turned it into a hotel and the bar on the porch became a star. A level-5 finish is a skim coat of joint compound (also known as mud) applied to a finish that you would normally leave at level 4, which is the level that typically is used when a wall surface will be painted or covered with wallpaper. There are two instances when you need a level 5 coating: when the finish will be glossy; or when light will be angled low enough to highlight bumps and depressions. A level-5 finish is like icing on the cake. It is a premium finish that you will not get by default; you absolutely will need to discuss this with your contractor or drywall installer, as it is not normally considered part of the finishing process.

Drywall finishing levels, in numeric terms, are not a normal part of the conversation between homeowners and contractors. Instead, you might discuss the final look or effect that you are aiming for. You might indicate that you want the dining room walls to be as smooth and flawless as possible or that the garage can have largely unfinished walls. I am passionate about Moroccan roots and cuisine, and I love sharing my cooking and cultural heritage. I feel that cooking is a way to explore and connect different cultures and I love doing it by putting my own twist into classic dishes. I grew up in Nahariya, Israel and my mother always filled our kitchen with Moroccan dishes and did her best to bring our culture to our family. In 1980, I moved to New Orleans, only to realize that my interest in cooking was a real desire. In 1996 my desire led me to my career as a chef and the
opening of Casablanca Restaurant. After 21 years of a successful restaurant and catering business I believed that I was ready to take a step back and retire. Well, I was wrong! Now a few years later I am back with Dvash Kosher Catering with a fresh and creative new direction.

Jefferson Performing Arts Society It seems like forever since I have had the excitement of announcing a new season. But here we are at the doorstep of our 44th Season. We are thrilled to be reestablishing our wonderful summer Youth Musical Theatre Intensives. Our 44th installment of cultural entertainment and enrichment is a blend of non-musicals and musicals and, of course, our annual offering of The Nutcracker. As usual, the JPAS season is chock-full of artistic variety and quality, and it is produced in the most beautiful environs and at the best value to be found while providing plenty of safe, free parking. The 44th Season features blockbuster family fare like the new Broadway version of Cinderella, the fantasy filled Shrek the Musical, and the ever-dazzling Nutcracker with live orchestra and outstanding national ballet stars.

St. Joseph Hospice & AIM Palliative Home Health Hospice refers to a style of care that focuses on maximizing quality of life when facing the end stages of a disease for which there is no other course of treatment or when treatment becomes counterproductive. Palliative care is provided, which helps a patient to be more comfortable and content. Thousands of people turn to hospice when facing a lifelimiting illness. According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, hospice involves a team-oriented approach to medical care and pain management as well as emotional and spiritual support. Care plans are specifically tailored to a patient's wishes and needs. Hospice is not only directed toward the person experiencing a life-limiting illness or injury but is also designed to offer support and resources to family members to
help them better cope with the end of a loved one's life. Hospice takes on many forms but focuses on caring for, but not curing, an individual. Hospice care is often administered in a person's home, but it also can occur in freestanding hospice centers, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, and hospitals. Individuals can opt for various services, many of which can co-mingle with the care being provided by family, medical centers, or long-term care homes. Hospice care often begins when the individual receiving care and his or her family members feel the end of life may be near. According to Relias, a healthcare advisory organization, most patients enter hospice during the last six months of life. Care providers are interdisciplinary. Doctors, nurses,
social service providers, bereavement therapists, dieticians, spiritual counselors, and physical or occupational therapists may be included in hospice treatment. Hospice should be discussed when doctors realize that they're running out of treatment options to prolong life. If such discussions are delayed, seriously ill patients may not fully benefit from the advantages awarded them through hospice. Hospice is usually paid through private insurance, Medicare or Medicaid, so there is no need to worry about cost. Various hospice services operate in different areas, and doctors and care centers can refer patients to hospice programs. A hospice program may conduct its own medical examination and review health records to recommend a plan
of action. It is important for a family member or health care proxy to be present for this initial meeting to express the patient's wishes if he or she is unable to do so. Hospice care may begin shortly after this initial consultation. Hospice helps people with life-limiting conditions spend their final days as comfortable as possible. Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home If you’re like most families, you wonder where to start, when thinking about funerals. Considering pre-arranging is an excellent way to begin. We learned during the pandemic that it’s good to have a plan and have it clearly laid out for your loved ones. Pre-planning allows you to pre-select and prepay for funeral expenses rather than leaving the choices and financing to others, at a difficult time in their lives. Since 1874, Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home has been helping New Orleans families, and they can answer all of your questions and take the difficulty out of planning your end-of-life celebration. Schoen offers many options to make your funeral just the right fit for you — and your budget. Whether it is a direct cremation or a full traditional service with a catered affair afterward; they can take care of every detail of your uniquely personal vision. There are payment options, and they’ll even create
a “Wishes File” for you if you’re not quite ready to commit. So, if something happens, your family has a place to start. According to recent industry estimates, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $12,000, including basic service fees, transporting remains to a funeral home, embalming and other preparation, a casket, viewing and burial. There are a lot of decisions to be made in a short amount of time and each aspect has a cost associated with it. It can be overwhelming for a family to address this at the time of loss. Many people assume that their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. Sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been kept up. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are
worked through. It can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. (Death Certificates in Louisiana often take four to six weeks). Since most funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, that tasks the surviving family members with financing the funeral while they await life insurance funds. It’s worth noting that when you use life insurance to cover funeral expenses, you do so through a third-party provider who charges a percentage fee. The net result is you pay more for a funeral than it actually costs for the convenience of using the life insurance as payment and your family still doesn’t know what you want. The true value of preened funeral insurance is what it does for those you leave behind. Your wishes are clear. The plan is comprised of choices you made, so no one has to wonder what you would have wanted. In addition, the prices are
locked in at the time of the contract on the guaranteed services. So, the longer you live, the better the value for you. For your loved ones that are left behind, the challenge of a sudden passing does not need to be complicated by wondering what you might have wanted, combined with an unexpected out of pocket expense.
