The Art of Zen: Zentangle, A Journey to Mindful Creativity at the Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale (Courtesy of Artworks by Sandy) Hollywood, Florida-In the busy and ever-changing world we live in, finding moments of tranquility and mindfulness is increasingly essential. Enter the art of Zentangle, an engaging art method led by the accomplished visual artist, Sandy Goldglantz. Teaching a serene and calming art form to an overwhelming crowd at the Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale on January 9th and 16th, Sandy brought a unique touch to the world of meditative art to more than 100 participants. The demand for her expertise was so immense that two separate dates had to be scheduled to accommodate the eager learners. With her rich artistic background, and years of mastery in the art form, Sandy guided the participants through a journey of calmness and relaxation, transforming the center into a haven of creativity and mindfulness. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as Sandy shared her wisdom with the attentive audience. Each stroke of the pen and every nuanced detail became a lesson in finding peace within the artistic process. The participants, all novices, embraced the opportunity to explore this unique form of expression under Sandy’s guidance. Zentangle was created in 2005 when Rick Roberts observed his partner, Maria Thomas, deeply engrossed in creating intricate patterns on a manuscript. This focused, meditative state led to the birth of Zentangle, a practice that combines Zen’s tranquility with the mesmerizing beauty of repetitive patterns. Sandy, drawing from her extensive experience, has been sharing this art form to students, young children and adults of all ages. Sandy is mostly well known in the Broward County School system as an Art teacher for more than 22 years introducing students to art and having them create a vision that comes to life. Her extensive work with students has had an overall positive effect on their studies, helping them to calm anxiety and increase focus. P. 1 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

The purpose of Zentangle extends beyond creating visually stunning images. It is a pathway to well-being, offering a myriad of benefits. The eight fundamental steps of the Zentangle method takes one on a journey through a process that cultivates gratitude, appreciation, and a mindful presence. Starting with gratitude which sets the tone for a mindful moment, creating a space to enjoy the upcoming artistic journey. The steps unfold with precision – from placing dots to creating borders, dividing spaces, and tangling. Each stroke, shade, and initial signature contributes to a unique masterpiece. The key lies in taking one’s time,

embracing the journey, and focusing on the present moment. Sandy emphasizes the therapeutic effects of this creative practice, promoting increased focus, creativity, and a heightened sense of self-confidence. Zentangle became a source of solace during challenging times, notably during the Covid lockdown. Sandy introduced this method to elementary school students, providing them with a calming outlet to navigate anxiety and enhance focus. The simplicity of the technique, coupled with its profound impact, underscores the versatility and accessibility of Zentangle. As an art specialist with a diverse background, Sandy brings a wealth of knowledge to her teachings. Having received her AAS degree in Fashion Illustration, and Fashion Design from FIT, and her BFA in painting from FIU, she combines her passion for art with a commitment to nurturing creativity in others. Zentangle is more than just an art form; it’s a form of artistic meditation that transcends conventional boundaries. The black-and-white canvases filled with rhythmic patterns become a canvas for self-expression, offering a relaxing and satisfying creative outlet. Sandy Goldglantz’s expertise and dedication to teaching have made Zentangle an accessible and transformative practice, bringing the benefits of mindfulness and creativity to individuals of all ages and backgrounds. The success of these two workshops solidified the Young Israel of Hollywood-Ft. Lauderdale’s reputation as a hub for vibrant and exciting programming with the assistance of Sandy Goldglantz who transformed the Young Israel into a haven for artistic exploration and self-discovery, leaving an indelible mark on all who participated. Rabbi Yochanan Zweig: A Visionary Leader in Torah Education Celebrates 50 Years of Talmudic Excellence (Courtesy of Talmudic University Yeshiva Bais Moshe Chaim) Miami Beach, Florida January 15, 2024 - As we mark the golden jubilee of Talmudic University Yeshiva Bais Moshe Chaim, we take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary journey led by Rabbi Yochanan Zweig, the visionary founder of this esteemed institution. Celebrating five decades of dedicated service to Torah education, Rabbi Zweig’s impact extends far beyond the walls of the yeshiva, shaping the lives of countless students and contributing to the vibrancy of Jewish communities around the world. In 1972, Rabbi Yochanan Zweig embarked on a mission to create a center of Torah learning that would imbue knowledge with character development and fostering personal and community responsibility. Over the past 50 years, the yeshiva has become synonymous with Torah wisdom, leadership development, and a commitment to the values of an Orthodox Jewish life. Rabbi Zweig’s journey as a Torah scholar began at Ner Israel, where he was a devoted student of Rav Yaakov Yitzchak Ruderman ztz”l and Rav Yaakov Weinberg ztz”l. Drawing P. 1 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

on this rich foundation, he set out to create an environment where students could thrive academically while embracing the holistic essence of Torah living. One of the distinctive features of Rabbi Zweig’s approach is evident in his parshah shiurim. Year after year, he brings fresh perspectives to the intricacies and nuances of the Torah’s wording, ensuring that each lesson provides timeless wisdom on matters affecting society today. His commitment to originality and creativity has become a hallmark of the shiurim he delivers, captivating the minds of students and community members alike. Talmudic University Yeshiva Bais Moshe Chaim, affectionately known as “the Yeshivah” in Miami Beach, has flourished under Rabbi Zweig’s guidance. Now celebrating its Yovel Jubilee anniversary, it has grown into a comprehensive center of Torah education and community development, encompassing educational systems from preschool to kollel and many virtual and printed mediums. In addition to its primary focus on Torah study, the yeshiva has played a pivotal role in the growth of Miami Beach’s baalei teshuvah

community. Under Rabbi Zweig’s leadership, the yeshiva has become a beacon of light, attracting individuals seeking to deepen their connection to Torah and Jewish life. On this occasion, Rabbi Yochanan Zweig reflects not only on the growth of the institution but also on personal milestones. His 60th wedding anniversary, celebrated recently, underscores the values he holds dear — love, commitment, and mutual respect. These values, instilled in the yeshiva’s philosophy, contribute to the nurturing environment that defines Talmudic University. In the words of Rabbi Yochanan Zweig, “Being an Orthodox Jew is not a burden. It’s a privilege and it gives a person a meaningful and fulfilling life.” This sentiment encapsulates the essence of Talmudic University Yeshiva Bais Moshe Chaim — a place where Torah is not just studied but lived. As we applaud Rabbi Yochanan Zweig’s remarkable contributions to Torah education, we look forward to the continued success and growth of Talmudic University Yeshiva Bais Moshe Chaim, a beacon of Torah excellence for the past 50 years and beyond.

The Journey of 95-Year-Old Tefillin and Their Owner Menachem Zev A”H By Leslie Srolovits

The tefillin are 95 years old, but no one looking at them could know their history, where they had been, or what their owner had endured while he was a prisoner during World War II. Menachem Zev Ben Chaim A”H was born in Nyirbator, a tiny town outside Budapest, June 12, 1915. He was the oldest of 11 children born to a chassidish family. Menachem told me that it was so cold in Russia that many of his fellow prisoners froze to death. It was normal and common for the prisoners to swap clothing and shoes with the dead prisoners, if their clothing or shoes had been better. Sadly, since the ground was so rock solid, always covered with thick ice and snow, none of the Jewish prisoners were buried properly. One bone-chilling night, a friend of Menachem’s died peacefully in the front lines, frozen to death. Menachem exchanged his old ragged coat with his friend’s. The new coat was black and long enough to cover more of Menachem’s legs, which were always cold. The new coat also had bigger pockets, and he put his tefillin in one of them. Menachem was very concerned he might not make it through the war. He was becoming thinner and thinner as the weeks and months passed. Jewish prisoners all around him were dying from frostbite or bullets from the Russian soldiers. They constantly were being pushed to different locations, with very little rest. He didn’t know how long he could endure it. One night, the entire group of soldiers and Jewish prisoners stopped in a remote Russian farm – a field, a house and a barn. The soldiers were in the warm house, while the Jews were sent to the unheated barn. There were pigs and horses all around them. That was the night when Menachem held onto his tefillin tightly and asked Hashem to please watch over him as he tried to escape. Menachem had enough. He was going to take a chance and risk his life. If he succeeded, he would finally be free. While one of the guards was distracted, Menachem ran across a snow-covered field. The soldier screamed “Stop! Stop!” but he kept on running. He was wearing his long black coat. Several gunshots rang out, and one bullet hit Menachem’s right leg. (After all, he was an easy target, wearing a black coat and running across a snow-covered field.) Menachem ran a few yards after he was hit, and then he collapsed into the snow. What happened next is without a doubt one nes — one miracle — after another. As

They did that just to torture him. They did it several times before they put him on a truck headed back to a field hospital, which was 10 miles from the front lines. Menachem was in pain. The Russians separated the people

dressed in uniforms from those dressed as prisoners. The Russians started marching the soldiers into the forest — but those soldiers really were prisoners. Menachem spoke some Russian that he had picked up from the years in captivity. He realized there was a language barrier separating the Hungarians, the Germans, and the Russians. At great risk to his personal safety, Menachem put his hands up in the air, crawled out of the cave, and walked toward the Russian soldiers. In broken Russian, he explained that the Germans switched clothing with the prisoners. Although it took some time to get his point across, he was successful. The Russians demanded that the Germans and the prisoners exchange clothing again. Then they marched the German soldiers deep into the forest and killed all of them. Menachem got some more food from the Russians, who told him that he and the other prisoners were free to go. Although Menachem felt free, he knew that there still were pockets of resistance. Word that the war was over did not filter to everyone. Menachem walked from the Russian frontier back home to Hungary. He begged for food, knocking on doors and saying in Russian, “I am a refugee please help me with some scraps of food, or even a raw potato.” He slept in the streets, or in open fields. But still he held onto the hope that with G-d’s help he would make it back to Nyirbator. Three and a half months after he started his journey, Menachem arrived in his hometown, only to find that gentiles were living in the house where he, his parents, and his 10 siblings had lived. Not knowing what to do, he wandered around town, looking for his parents and siblings. He came across two friends, and they hugged and kissed each other, with joy and tears. Menachem and his friends spent some time talking about what they had endured, and how they were able to survive and make it back home. One of Menachem’s friends was very upset that all the Jewish homes were occupied by gentiles, who had taken possession of them after the Germans rounded up the Jews and deported them. After careful thought, the three childhood friends come up with a plan. Since Hungary is still in a state of chaos, they thought, let’s raid the old police station, see what we can find, and then go house to house and evict the gentiles. Because it was a small town, they already knew a lot of people and where they use to live, Menachem said. They tried out all the keys to the jail cells, spruced up their appearances, had a nice meal, and made the police station their temporary home. Menachem was happy and thankful to have survived, but he was not in his own home yet, and he had no idea where the rest of his family was. The next morning, the three selfappointed detectives went door to door and politely asked the squatters to vacate the premises. If they declined to leave, the three friends opened their coats to show their weapons. If the squatters insisted on staying in the house they had taken over illegally, they were forcefully handcuffed and whisked away to jail. of my entire life, because Menachem Zev Ben Chaim A”H was none other than my dear beloved father, who I miss and think of every day. He was a man of courage and compassion toward others, regardless of who you were. My father never made a lot of money, but he was always happy with what G-d had provided him and his family. He never envied those who had more, and he always taught us to look at people who have less than we have. If we do, he said, you never will be dissatisfied with what you have. If you ever met my father and spoke with him just for five minutes about anything, you would walk away feeling that you just met a very special person. He made everyone feel important. He was the most genuine and honest person I have ever met. My dad passed away 18 years ago, at the age of 89, but not a day goes by without my thinking of him and his stories, about his life and what he had to endure as a prisoner of war. I often wonder to myself how a human being can go through so much, yet be able to continue with life and raise a family and always have a smile on his face. My mom, who I love dearly, is now 98 years old, and she is a pillar of strength and encouragement for the entire family. This is my father’s story, not my mother’s, but she has her own horror story. In Auschwitz, she made ammunition for Krups (yes, the same company that sells small appliances in Macy’s). She and her two sisters had consecutive numbers tattooed on their arms in Auschwitz; they were there for one and a half years before they were liberated by the American army. The tefillin are in my possession. They remind me daily of who my father was, what he stood for, and how I can strive to be more like him. The journey of the tefillin does not end here. It is my intention to replace the straps on both tefillin, replace the outer shell (called batim) and then, G-d willing, offer them to my grandson Jonah for his bar mitzvah. The tefillin, with all its history, will be passed to the great grandson of Menachem Zev Ben Chaim Srolovits A”H.

Redefining Selling By Shalom Markman

“Hello. Gotta talk to you. I wanna switch to Cardknox. But I wanna do it asap. Do you have ACH as well?” A text message I received this past week. I hopped on with them almost immediately to answer their questions and help them through my simple application process. By the time this article is published, they will have already been boarded as a new client. The amount of selling I did was zero. It caught me by surprise. Have I been mistaken for years? Have I been misinterpreting sales my entire life? Have I been trying to sell way too hard while not appreciating the value I truly offer? If I’m defining sales as let me tell you why you need this product and why you should be buying it from me, then not only have I been trying to sell too hard, but I’m also completely misinterpreting the word, sales. Business owners have a hard time being comfortable with the ‘sales’ responsibility. Nancy Bleeke Noel, (Why Does Sales Still Get a Bad Rap? May 2018, Sales Pro Insider) elaborates that “small business owners with technical expertise (that’s you financial advisors, CPAs, lawyers, engineers) or products that are valuable to the consumer seem to have an especially hard time being comfortable and skillful with the sales part of their responsibilities.” “In fact,” continues Noel, “I see many of them pour more money than they should into marketing and other efforts just so they don’t have to sell. At some P. 3 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

point, conversations with potential buyers do occur and in fact, may be needed to help buyers make confident buying decisions; and they aren’t prepared for a collaborative conversation that will secure the “yes, we’ll work with you” decision.” The simple word, sales, has thus made me feel needy for a while. It’s made me feel that all I wanted was something from the other. I’ve been hesitant for so long to eradicate the word sales from my conscious as I interact with others when in the sales process. My current email signature which hasn’t been updated in years even says ‘account executive. But who am trying to trick? Mr. or Mrs. Director of Development, we get it. You’re in sales. So is every CEO, and they are selling much more than a product. They are selling ideas and a vision to their employees. I have it easy. So how to shed that negative premise? Step one is to acknowledge what sales actually is. Step two is to be proud of the term in how it relates to the value we add. My personal greatest sales successes have come when it was completely about the other. When there was a need and I was able to solve it, like a missing puzzle piece in an unfinished puzzle. Like the time I landed a major client because of current chargeback issues they were facing. Or a recent client from last week, a bookkeeping company, that reached out and required an account set up for a client to be rushed before the fifteenth of the month because of their clients net

fifteen policies. They also needed it done with certain specifications, like having the new payment gateway integrate into other existing internal softwares. It’s realizing that your prospects need you more than you need them. Once you get there, you’re selling on another level. It’s not about you anymore. The client feels listened to instead of sold to. It’s about going through our customers and appreciating that each had a specific need at that exact time and place when they became a client of ours. We have so much to offer that there’s no need to force the sale. The selling in sales should ideally be more about helping get our prospects to the finish line. Showing that we’re listening to their concerns and helping with the decisionmaking process. Go out and ask for business but not without believing in your value and understanding how you can benefit the other simultaneously. Hence, I hereby redefine the term sales, as ‘offering a product or service utilizing the power of emotional intelligence.’ Speaking of, that client application has just been approved and my phone’s ringing. Gotta go.

Did You Quit? How To Avoid The Vicious Cycle By Shmuel Shayowitz A man walks into a gym on January 1st, bursting with enthusiasm. He tells the trainer, “I’m here to fulfill my New Year’s resolution: Go to the gym daily, lose some pounds, and add a drop of muscle!” He adds, “If I quit, I’ll pay you $100.” Impressed by his determination, the trainer gets him started on a rigorous routine. Two weeks later, the man appears, looking a lot less enthusiastic. The trainer asks, “How’s it going?” The man replies, “Well, I’ve decided to adjust my resolution. Now, my commitment is to come to the gym every day and just wave to you. I figure I’m losing pounds of guilt and gaining muscle in my waving arm. It’s much more sustainable, and I won’t have to pay you a hundred bucks. So I am actually making money, which was also one of my financial resolutions!” If you didn’t know, National Quitters Day was celebrated last week. Quitters Day typically falls in mid-January and marks the point where the passion for New Year’s resolutions starts to wane. It is the metaphorical wall we hit when the initial enthusiasm for goals, such as saving more money, paying off debt, or investing, clashes with the reality of our daily lives. Here are some tips I have shared with clients to keep their financial resolutions alive… Set Realistic and Specific Goals: Instead of aiming to “save a lot of money,” define what that means for you. Maybe it’s saving $100 more each month or cutting down on specific unnecessary expenses. By setting achievable and clear targets, you can measure your progress and stay motivated. Create a Budget and Stick to It: A budget is a roadmap for your financial journey. By knowing where your money is going, you can P. 3 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

make informed decisions about where to cut back and how to allocate your savings more effectively. Track Your Progress: Whether it’s through a spreadsheet, an app, or a journal, keeping track of your financial journey can provide a sense of accomplishment. Celebrate small milestones, like paying off a percentage of your debt or reaching a savings goal. Automate Your Finances: Automation can be a powerful tool. Setting up automatic transfers to your savings account or automatic bill payments can help you stay on track without having to think about it every day. Educate Yourself: The more you know about personal finance, the better equipped you’ll be to make smart decisions. Read books, follow financial blogs, or even consider talking to a financial advisor. Find a Support System: Share your goals with friends or family members who can offer support and accountability. Sometimes, just knowing someone else is aware of your goals can increase your commitment to them. Adjust as Necessary: Life is unpredictable,

and your financial situation can change. Be flexible and willing to adjust your goals as needed. There’s no shame in modifying your objectives to better fit your current circumstances. Remember the ‘Why’: Remind yourself why you set these resolutions in the first place. Whether it’s to be debt-free, save for a house, or just have a financial cushion, keeping the end goal in mind can be a powerful motivator. Quitters Day is not just a day; it’s a reminder of the challenges we face in maintaining long-term goals. Understanding why resolutions fail and implementing strategies to overcome these obstacles can turn your financial aspirations into achievements. Remember, the journey to financial stability is a marathon, not a sprint. With perseverance, a well-thought-out plan, and some grit, you can stay on track for a financially healthy year.

Brittle Bones - Preventing Osteoporosis By Dr. Ezra Miller

The fear of osteoporosis - the weakening of bones - is a common concern as we age. This process involves a natural decrease in bone density, making them more susceptible to fractures. In fact, studies show that the risk of death related to hip fractures is equivalent to the risk of death from breast cancer in 50-yearold women (Cummings et al.). While factors like aging and genetics play a role, adopting the right diet and behaviors can significantly reduce this risk and the severity of osteoporosis in both men and women. Recent studies (Yi-Qung Yang et al. for those interested) emphasize that activity levels, smoking cessation, and sunlight exposure reduced the risk of developing osteoporosis. Notably, physical activity is the sole factor that reduced the risk of actual fracture incidence. This is most likely due to the fact that exercise not only impacts osteoporosis development but also provides additional adaptations such as balance, agility, and movement control, all crucial to P. 4 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

reducing the risk of falls and fractures. Increased activity, specifically resistance training, will not only improve one’s strength but also directly increase bone density. By moving one’s body against resistance, the muscles pull on the bones, forcing them to adapt and get stronger. As long as we are lifting safely, starting with lighter weights and progressing to heavier ones will result in increased bone density, contributing to improved bone health over time. Additionally, nutrition is a potent tool to enhance bone density, providing the necessary building blocks for muscle and bone strength. A diet rich in protein, vegetables, and essential nutrients helps improve muscle strength. Whereas, calcium and vitamin D specifically play a critical role in bone density as they are directly incorporated in the process of strengthening bones. Moreover, getting adequate and safe sunlight is crucial, as it prompts natural vitamin D production, further supporting bone strength.

Ideally, it is optimal to begin preventing osteoporosis as early as possible. However, irrespective of when we begin, we can strongly influence the severity of the disease. Our bodies adapt to various triggers we provide regardless of age or gender. So, starting late is still considerably better than never. The complications of osteoporosis can significantly impact our lives and life expectancy. Utilizing the right tools and starting now, is our best defense against this preventable disease. Simply by increasing physical activity, getting appropriate sunlight, and consuming the right nutrients, we can mitigate the risk of osteoporosis and enhance both our quality and quantity of life.
