SOUTH FLORIDA SUPPORTS ISRAEL

Group of South Florida Rabbis Fly To Israel with $2MM in Donations and Supplies AS PUBLISHED BY CBS MIAMI — Over a dozen Jewish rabbis departed Sunday from Miami International Airport en route to Israel, traveling to the Mideast to help bring a message of peace to the region two weeks following an attack by Hamas. CBS News Miami was at the airport as rabbis from across the country departed for Israel with about 15 flying out of MIA and another 15 from California. Rabbis came from as far away as Chicago, New Orleans and New Jersey to join the group. They said there’s so much you can do from afar, but there’s even more you can do from over there. While these rabbis are separated by hundreds of miles, when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, they said it was a message to Jews around the world. “Our enemies don’t differentiate P 1 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

between different levels of observance, religiosity, and so on and so forth,” Rabbi Ruvi New of East Boca Raton said. “They look at a Jew they see simply a Jew, and that’s the way we need to see each other.” So, these Chabad rabbis created a group chat. “And people started to respond, ‘let’s make a solidarity mission to Israel’,” said Rabbi Schneur Kaplan of Fort Lauderdale’s Downtown Jewish Center. “We put it together in a few days.” With them, they brought duffle bags full of supplies including sweaters, Camelbacks, headlights, raincoats, and more. These rabbis said there was nothing they could do to fully prepare themselves for the stories they were about to hear. “Just hearing the stories on TV,

are so shocking,” said Rabbi Yossie Nemas of Chabad of New Orleans. “Obviously, we’re gonna be there for them, and first thing you got to really listen.” But, their goal is to bring a message of hope. “This is a trip about bringing comfort to those families who are grieving, to try and bring strength to those families who are hoping for their loved ones to be returned to them very, very soon, and to visit the soldiers if we can, on the front lines,” Rabbi Schneur Kaplan said. They said a prayer before they took off. In total, they said they’re bringing with them about $2 million in donations and supplies for all those in Israel.

SOUTH FLORIDA SUPPORTS ISRAEL

Boca Raton Synagogues Organize Donations for Israeli Soldiers and Families FOX29 – Volunteers in Boca Raton packed more than 60 duffle bags in synagogues on Sunday afternoon to send to Israeli soldiers and families. Officials said more than 4,600 people were killed in Gaza and Israel since the conflict began on Oct. 7. The war between Israel and Hamas, which the United States designated a terrorist organization, entered its third week on Sunday. On Monday, two rabbis with the Boca Raton Synagogue, Efrem Goldberg and Josh Broide, along with Yaakov Gibber, who is a rabbi at Boca Jewish Center, departed for Israel from Miami. Broide said the effort was created from people who wanted to help Israel. “People need a hug,” Brodie said. “They want to feel supported. We have members of our own community that are studying in Israel right now. We have members of our own community, who are on the frontlines in the Israeli Defense Force.” Sylvia Broide, who was one of the volunteers at Boca Raton Synagogue, said she has family living in Israel and work within the Israeli military. She said it’s been “worrisome” during the current war and they wanted to help. “We’re sitting here in America worrying about what’s going on in Israel,” Brodie said. “And we just need to help. We need to do our part. We just need to do our share. The supplies include energy bars, first aid kits, duct tape, tablets, watches and other medical supplies. Gibber said he wanted to help Israel because he felt connected to the country through his faith along with knowing people inside the country. He said these efforts help give him hope during the war. “There’s a burning desire to participate and help in any way that we can,” Gibber said. “...This has given me so much hope and so much optimism and so much positivity.” P 2 0 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

BUSINESS

My Unlikely Customer By Shalom Markman

I got a call the other week. It was from Peter asking if I would take him on as a client. I was ecstatic. Who doesn’t like a phone call like this? I set the meeting. As I sipped my coffee the following day, our call took an unexpected turn. Two minutes into the conversation, I recognized that I was in way above my league. This call was about an entirely new product. Although familiar with what he wanted, I’d never sold it before. This was about to be an entirely new type of client. And for good reason. I was being taken to task for what I’d been preaching for a full year prior. Those who know me know that I post some of my daily cold calls for all to see. Not from a coaching perspective, but from an encouragement perspective. When we see others dealing with a similar challenge, it’s a learning experience. We’ll find ourselves coming away with another level of confidence. It hits home with unspoken practical lessons. Peter was here to take me to task and asked that I be added on his P 3 0 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

company’s payroll as a sales coach. I was visibly nervous. On the one hand, a load of responsibility just landed on my desk with the sound of the Big Bang. I knew that I had no idea on how to advise a multimillion-dollar company. Me, qualified? Wrong guy for sure. Although this was my daily efforts actively coming full circle, I wasn’t ready to charge for it. On the other hand, what greater sign of success than being asked to advise on a personal accomplishment l? What would you do? As Rav Noach Weinberg of Aish HaTorah told my father in 1984, “if you know something, teach it”. I decided to let those words potentially resonate, and informed Peter that I’d give it some thought. I took the weekend to revisit what had gotten me this promising prospect and concluded that it was me just doing me. I wasn’t worried about the public reaction I would be getting from publicly releasing my LinkedIn sales content. Although I was an amateur, it was being done for the good of others. Since saying yes, I’ve become

a LinkedIn sales coach of sorts, helping companies with their current approach. We focus on how initial sales calls are made, including reviewing their calling script, how follow ups are done, and who their nonobvious prospecting targets should be. It’s about changing the small sales techniques to illicit big internal changes. While I still don’t charge for it, my schedule is starting to fill up from it. But what’s my point in all this? I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’ve gotten business from those clients by default. When you’re a trusted friend, folks will want to do business with you simply because they trust you and like you. If you’re willing to believe in your product, practice patients, and be of value, you won’t have to do much selling. Shalom Markman started selling merchant services by door knocking in NYC. He currently lives in Norfolk VA with his family and visits Florida when he gets hungry or brings on a new client. You can find him on LinkedIn.

Using or Losing Your Home Equity By Shmuel Shayowitz

In the world of personal finance, stories like Jane* and Peter’s* are increasingly common. Over the years, they found themselves trapped in a hefty $80,000 debt from credit cards and personal loans. What began as a simple home renovation project soon escalated into a financial crisis. With interest rates on credit cards nearing 30%, their monthly payments became unbearable. Their lovely colonial home in Dade* County had greatly increased in value since they bought it. This meant a large portion of their wealth was tied up in home equity - the difference between their home’s value and their outstanding mortgage balance. While they’d heard about Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCs), they were unsure about its details and hesitant to explore it. HELOCs offer homeowners a flexible way to borrow against their home equity, with the freedom to withdraw and repay funds as needed. It functions as a revolving line of credit, separate from the primary mortgage. This is especially useful for those with a low first mortgage rate, as it lets them tap into their home equity without affecting the original loan. Considering that about 83% of homeowners have a conventional mortgage rate of under 4%, preserving that first mortgage is crucial and is further fueling to the current low housing inventory. Pursuing a HELOC can be very P 3 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

beneficial if you meet the requirements. The first step is determining how much you need to borrow, based on your loanto-value (LTV) ratio. In the past, many banks allowed a combined LTV of up to 90%. For instance, if your home appraises at $500,000 and you owe $400,000 on your primary mortgage, a bank might typically offer a HELOC of up to $50,000, making your total debt $450,000 or 90% of your home’s value. Some banks even consider up to 100% of the equity in certain circumstances. Jane and Peter regret not acting sooner when HELOC rates were in the 3s. I explained, although they would have enjoyed lower payments initially, because HELOC rates are variable and change with Federal Reserve rate adjustments, their rates would have increased to where the market is today regardless. Currently, consolidating their high-interest debts into a HELOC could mean an interest rate of around 8.5-9%, saving them nearly $15,000 annually. When it comes to considering a HELOC, there are other factors to consider. While HELOCs pose a risk because rates are variable, the good news is that the Federal Reserve is likely to have stopped hiking rates (you heard it here first!). Additionally, when the economy is jittery, financial institutions become cautious. Banks become more stringent with approval criteria, appraisal values,

loan amounts, and credit and income qualifications. If you could benefit from a HELOC, now is the time to explore these options before banks tighten their standards. Jane and Peter’s story reminds us that exploring financial opportunities proactively can significantly improve your financial well-being. While HELOCs may not be suitable for everyone, understanding their advantages and consulting experts can help you make informed decisions and safeguard your financial future. The key is to act wisely and make the most of your home equity while ensuring financial stability. Water - The Essence of Life By Dr. Ezra Miller

When scientists search for other potentially habitable planets, the single most critical factor theyseek is the presence of water. In the known universe, no biological organism, not even a singlecelledamoebae, can survive without water. Simply put, without water life cannot exist. It is no coincidence that the atomic weight of the atoms that make up water (Dihydrogen Oxide) equals “18” - the same numerical value of “Chai” (the hebrew word meaning “life”). Given how crucial water is to sustaining life, it should come as no surprise that optimal hydration is vital to ensure we function at our best. Therefore, understanding the fundamentals of hydration, the best methods to optimize it, and how to prepare for events when we cannot consume fluids (such as prolonged athletic events, fasting, sleep, etc.) will empower us to enhance our overall health and functionality and truly live life to the fullest. Proper hydration is critical to a wide variety of physical functions. When we are dehydrated, our bodies simply do not function optimally. Our blood pressure becomes deregulated, gut motility decreases, and the trillions of chemical reactions in our body that rely on water begin to work less efficiently. In fact, studies have shown that even a 1-2% drop in hydration can lead to significant decreases in cognitive and physical performance. With this in mind, the ideal goal is to drink half your body weight (in

pounds) in ounces of fluid per day. For example, if you weigh 160 lbs, aim for 80 fluid ounces - the equivelent of 10 cups per day. Although it may seem like a lot, you can easily achieve this by sipping from a water bottle throughout your day. For those who dislike the taste of plain water, adding a water flavor enhancer with minimal sugar can be a good option. As a side note, this recommended fluid intake is a baseline and does not account for replenishing lost fluids, such as during exercise (for specific details, search for “The Galpin Equation”). To enhance your body’s water absorption, it is advisable to include electrolytes and carbohydrates. Yes, you read that right—increasing your carbohydrate intake. Both electrolytes and carbohydrate intake help saturate our cells with water, making them great options when preparing for activities such as a long run or a prolonged fast. This does not mean you should indulge in donuts all day; make sure to get your carbohydrates from healthy sources such as whole grains, rice, fruits, and vegetables. However, when we do increase carbohydrate intake, it acts to help pull water into our cells and hydrate our bodies. This is the same reason for the rapid weight loss often seen when starting a “low carb diet” - just the reverse effect. Furthermore, electrolytes, particularly sodium, potassium, and magnesium, enable the cells in our bodies to hold more water. Just be cautious with the timing

if you’re preparing for a fast or a similar event; consuming extra salt too late in the day might leave you feeling thirsty. When preparing for an event during which you won’t be able to consume water, proper timing is crucial for feeling and performing at your best. In fact, it is recommended to begin hydrating yourself as early as one-to-two days prior to the event. The age-old habit of chugging water immediately before a fast, unfortunately, doesn’t get the job done. In fact, drinking fluids too quickly can trigger your body’s urge to urinate. It’s much more preferable to gradually and steadily increase your water intake throughout the day. As always, it’s essential to consult your primary care physician before making any dietary changes, especially if you’re taking medications. With proper hydration, you can improve your health, enhance your cognitive and physical performance, and provide your body with the critical element it needs to function optimally. Hebrew Academy Celebrates Yom Tzahal: A Day of Tribute to the Israel Defense Forces During the month of Cheshvan Hebrew Academy students set aside a day to celebrate Yom Tzahal. The school’s outstanding B’not Sherut transformed the campus into a military base and adorned the hallways in honor of this special day. Both students and staff proudly donned Tzahal swag, and the day commenced with an inspirational tefillah and a special assembly. Established in 2018, Yom Tzahal is a time when the Hebrew Academy community comes together to acknowledge the significance of the Israel Defense Forces and Am Israel. Throughout the month of Cheshvan, Hebrew Academy dedicates itself to honoring the IDF. Students engage in various educational activities

Mission Statement: Through the light of Torah and academic excellence, the Hebrew Academy inspires each and every child to improve the world. Website: www.hebrewacademymiami.org
