JEMS Family Fun Day (Courtesy of JEMS) Despite the rainy weather on Sunday, January 7th, the energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers and participants at JEMS Academy’s first ever Family Fun Day could not be dampened. The community turned out in force, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. One mother said, “I had to literally drag my kids out of there!” Laser Tag, a rock climbing wall, bounce houses, game booths, prizes, food trucks, icecream, cotton candy and popcorn all contributed to a successful event that appealed to a variety of ages and abilities. Volunteers from three schools, Bais Yaakov, Hillel and Bnos Toras Emes, converged to ensure full staffing for the ticket counter, booths and rides. What really set these volunteers apart was their sparkling eyes and brilliant smiles as they each steadfastly carried out their jobs,

P. 1 2 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

despite the rain. Almost all of the JEMS students and their families were in attendance, and it was heartwarming to see the outpouring of love toward them from all sides. Students who have previously integrated with their special JEMS friends were so excited to be reunited with them. Students who currently integrate in the playground and classroom eagerly greeted the JEMS students. One mother described how her 5th grader came home “bubbling over with joy that she finally, finally, finally got to join the JEMS cuties as a 5th grader - she waited allllll last year…She told me that from now on we couldn’t get to school late because she needed to be there on time to go to JEMS.” The organic growth and acceptance of all the students integrating with JEMS has been astonishing. Currently, four community schools have their students

integrating with JEMS students. One teacher marveled at how easily her students interact with these children, as until now she herself has been uncomfortable around people with special needs. Another teacher enthused that she has never seen such prodigious growth in her students in all the years she has been teaching; their sensitivity to and acceptance of children with different abilities is unparalleled, and they just truly love them. JEMS is a program in North Miami Beach providing therapy-infused education to Jewish children with a variety of special needs, ensuring they can each achieve the highest degree of knowledge, Jewish practice, self-esteem, and independence possible. “Amud HaYomi” Set to Commence Mesechta Shabbos Gedolei Yisrael Offer Resounding Endorsement and Urge the Learning for Klal Yisrael’s Ultimate Protection By Chaim Gold “It is a time of war, a time when we need so much shemirah! How can we achieve shemirah? How can we invoke rachamei shomayim for all of Am Yisrael, for the soldiers at the front, for all those who live in Eretz Yisrael and for all Yidden around the world who are under attack?” exclaimed HaGaon HaRav Yitzchok Zilberstein, shlita, Rav of Ramat Elchanan and one of the leading senior poskim of our time. “The answer is simple! It is staring us in the face. It is a oneword answer. ‘Shabbos!’ Yes, when we keep Shabbos, enhance our shemiras Shabbos, Shabbos keeps us, Shabbos guards us from difficulty and tragedy!” Those passionate words of Rav Zilberstein were said at a seminal meeting with leaders of hanhalas Dirshu, led by the Nasi of Dirshu, Rav Dovid Hofstedter, shlita. Rav Zilberstein was commenting on the hashgacha pratis that Dirshu’s two most popular learning programs will embark shortly on learning Masechta Shabbos - both Dirshu’s widely popular Amud HaYomi program and Daf HaYomi B’Halacha. Shabbos is Shemirah! Since its inception on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan of this year, the Amud HaYomi program has opened nearly 1,000 shiurim the world over attracting more than 100,000 participants! The new daily limud “yomi’ with which Dirshu has gifted Klal Yisrael has taken off in an unprecedented way, literally conquering the hearts and minds of Klal Yisrael - whether it is baalei battim seeking a limud that enables them to gain a kinyan and have a geshmak; whether it is kollel yungeleit seeking a systematic way of being koneh Shas while simultaneously learning it in a non-superficial way; whether it is bachurim¸ yes, thousands of bachurim, who have taken to the limud! There are even a number of yeshivos that actually have so many bochurim learning as part of the program that Dirshu has agreed to make those yeshivos into monthly testing sites, so that the bachurim do not even have to leave yeshiva to take the tests. The Amud HaYomi will be beginning Masechta Shabbos in less than four weeks, 9 Adar 1/February 18, and it was about this that Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein and numerous other Gedolei Yisrael with whom Dirshu met have expressed their joy. “Shabbos is a shemirah,” is the message that came through loud and clear. Not only will the Amud HaYomi begin learning Masechta Shabbos but Dirshu’s other massive program, its Daf HaYomi B’Halacha daily learning program will also embark on hilchos Shabbos, Chelek Gimmel of the Mishnah Berurah in a few months’ time. Thus, not only will lomdim be able to learn Masechta Shabbos with the Amud HaYomi, but at the very same time as they are deeply immersed in the sugyos of hilchos Shabbos they will also be able to P. 1 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

learn the halacha l’maaseh of Shabbos with the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha program. Leading Gedolei Yisrael including HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau, shlita, have urged the learning of hilchos Shabbos as a shemirah in response to the war that has been raging since Simchas Torah. Currently, anyone participating in Dirshu’s two flagship programs, has the opportunity to not only achieve a kinyan in Masechta Shabbos and hilchos Shabbos but also to bring rachamei shomayim upon Klal Yisrael who needs it so much during these trying times. Twin Powers: Shabbos and Achdus When hanhalas Dirshu met with the Vizhnitzer Rebbe, shlita in his home in Bnei Brak, Dirshu’s Rabbi Shlomo Rozenstein asked the Rebbe, “In what area should we seek to be mechazek ourselves in light of the current matzav?” “Shabbos is the mekor habracha,” the Rebbe responded, “The Torah was given on Shabbos. Likras Shabbos lechu v’neilcha, when we come and meet Shabbos by engaging in learning about Shabbos and learning the halachos of Shabbos, we tap into the source of our bracha and that endows Klal Yisrael with a special shemirah.” The Rebbe then turned his focus to Rav Hofstedter and highlighted another important ideal that brings Hashem’s shemirah on Klal Yisrael, the ideal of achdus, of bringing so much unity among Klal Yisrael. He said, “Dirshu has the zechus to bring tens of thousands of Yidden together in learning the Torah hakedosha. They are coming likras Shabbos, to greet the Shabbos by learning the Gemara and halachos of Shabbos. Embarking on this with so many Yidden together is a tremendous manifestation of achdus. Certainly, the twin powers of achdus and Shabbos contain within them the most important ingredients needed by Klal Yisrael to prevail in these difficult times!” concluded the Vizhnitzer Rebbe. Siyum On Masechta Brachos In Vienna History was made just over one-hundred years ago when the Daf Hayomi was established by Rav Meir Shapiro at the First Kenessia Gedolah in 1923 in Vienna. Now, history will once again be made on February 19 when the first Siyum of the Amud Hayomi cycle will be held in the same hall in Vienna

on Mesechta Brochos. The Siyum in the Sofiensäle Hall will I”YH be graced by many Gedolim from across the world, commemorating this historical event. HaGaon HaRav Chizkiyahu Mishkovsky, shlita, venerated Mashgiach of Yeshiva Orchos Torah and a talmid muvhak of HaGaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, delineated the remarkable, unprecedented success of the new Dirshu Amud HaYomi program as it is poised to conclude Masechta Brachos and embark on Masechta Shabbos. He asked a question. “Why was Yehuda chosen by Yaakov Avinu to go to Mitzrayim before the other brothers to establish a yeshiva in Goshen? We know that shevet Yissochor was a shevet of Gedolei Torah. Why couldn’t Yissochor establish the yeshiva?” He answered in the name of the Nesivos Shalom of Slonim, that after a yeshiva has already been established, you can find many people who can give shiurim and help keep the yeshiva running properly. However, when it comes to starting a yeshiva, building a foundation for a new makom Torah, you need a ‘gur aryeh,’ a lion like Yehuda, a revolutionary leader who has the power, initiative and tenacity to make sure it happens in the best way possible. This pshat came to mind when I was thinking about the new, revolutionary Amud HaYomi program that Rav Hofstedter and Dirshu have gifted to Klal Yisrael,” Rav Mishkovsky continued. “Just think when Rav Meir Shapiro established the Daf HaYomi, it was an extremely ambitious project. The program would not have caught on and become a Klal Yisrael limud without the support of the Gedolei Yisrael of that time, especially the support of the Imrei Emes of Ger. In this case, we have seen this program become a Klal Yisrael program in a matter of weeks or a few months!” Rav Mishkovsky exclaimed. “We see baalei battim who have so identified with the program because it allows for time to have a geshmak in learning. We see kollel yungeleit grabbing onto the program because it affords them a plan to learn Shas at a pace that they can understand and retain the knowledge. We see bachurim who have found such newfound energy in learning as a result of the program’s having caught on and even becoming an official seder in some yeshivos. Without a doubt this program is a tremendous zechus for Klal Yisrael!” Perhaps Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein best encapsulated the Torah’s view on this by saying, “Everyone in Klal Yisrael must be involved in the battle for Eretz Yisrael. Torah is akin to our atom bomb. It is the ultimate shemirah for Klal Yisrael and when Yidden embark on learning Masechta Shabbos and hilchos Shabbos with diligence and complete focus, there is no better shemirah for all of Klal Yisrael!”

COMMUNITY NEWS

Zucker Hebrew Academy Embarks On An Exciting Journey (Courtesy of Zucker Hebrew Academy) “Zucker Hebrew Academy embarks on an exciting journey,” shares Rabbi Avraham Mitgang, the Head of School in Hollywood, Florida. “Establishing a Torah-true school for an underserved part of our community is a unique and awesome opportunity.” For many in established Jewish communities, the concept of creating a dual-curriculum school providing authentic Torah education for families who may not yet fully embrace kosher practices or observe Shabbat might raise eyebrows. The question lingers: “Why would these families choose a Jewish school for their children?” In reality, there’s a surprisingly receptive audience for a Jewish education among families who hold warm sentiments towards Yiddishkeit and wish for their children to grow up with a strong commitment to their Jewish identity. However, several obstacles often stand in the way. Foremost among them is the challenge of tuition. Families who never envisioned the need to pay for private school education, especially when public school is a free alternative, might be hesitant to consider the idea. This is particularly true for those who grew up in Israel with culturally Jewish education provided at no cost. Another concern is the worry about a general studies education that matches public school standards. There’s a prevailing fear that by not fully participating in secular society, these families might be hindering their children’s chances of success. Additionally, the feeling of not fitting in with the parent body of most Jewish schools, especially when other parents conspicuously adhere to religious practices, adds to the hesitation. Zucker Hebrew Academy aims to reshape this narrative, offering an exceptional opportunity to overcome these barriers. Through Florida State vouchers P. 1 8 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

and various scholarships, the academy ensures that these families can indeed afford a Jewish school education for their children. Addressing concerns about the quality of secular education, ZHA has invested time and resources, supported by dedicated backers, to bring in top-notch curriculum and teachers. Noteworthy features, such as the STEAM Makerspace room, verticallyintegrated Origo math curriculum, and an ELA program based on the science of reading, underscore the commitment to providing a high-quality education. While

these elements might not be typical for a young school, they serve as compelling reasons to attract more Jewish children through its doors. Importantly, Zucker Hebrew Academy fosters a sense of belonging among parents. The academy’s community is characterized by vibrant family programming, creating a welcoming environment for all. What truly sets ZHA apart is its limudei kodesh component, almost indistinguishable from any standard, authentic Torah day school. Children learn parsha, yomim tovim, kriya, kesiva, Chumash, and, as they grow older, mishnayos, yedios klaliyos, and gemara. We hope that these children will continue their journey in Yiddishkeit, well-equipped with the skills and knowledge gained at ZHA. Authentic Torah education is the key to illuminating neshamos and enhancing kavod Shamayim. Mrs. Staci Berry, an experienced educator and principal of Zucker Hebrew Academy, takes pride in all that has been accomplished. “At Zucker Hebrew Academy, we don’t just teach curriculum; we teach children! These children are special, and they deserve the best we can possibly offer.” Rabbi Mitgang and Mrs. Berry extend an invitation to everyone to come and take a tour of ZHA, witnessing firsthand just how exceptional it really is. In light of its rapid expansion, Zucker Hebrew Academy is actively seeking dedicated educators to join its dynamic team. Teachers, rebbeim, and moros who are growth-oriented, harbor a deep understanding and love for children, and believe in fostering hands-on, engaging classrooms are encouraged to apply. Rabbi Mitgang personally welcomes inquiries and applications, which can be directed to rabbimitgang@zuckerhebrewacademy.org.

BUSINESS

Don’t Get Roasted By Shalom Markman

I was desperate to make a sale. It was my third month in sales, and I had already been doubting my abilities when an unsuspecting coffee manufacturer came into my peripheral vision. At that time, my monthly commission was a mere one hundred and fifty dollars per month. My wife can attest. I wasn’t salaried or even hourly. This business had no choice. I was determined to bring them on as a client. I had been door knocking that day and I welcomed myself in. I immediately knew it was above my head being the new agent I was at the time. I talked a good talked and they gave me a shot. I unfortunately oversold myself. Thinking back, I’m really ashamed. I remember their first transaction. It was a fairly large customer invoice. Our bank held up the funds. Because of my inexperience, I hadn’t properly set them up with the appropriate limits. My phone started ringing off the hook. They wanted their money. I was a nervous wreck. I think I was more relieved the day they dropped my services than when our bank actually funded them. Years later, I still live with this lesson. I’m now so careful not to oversell that I’ll often find myself consulting businesses away from using my own company, while suggesting either an alternative or advising that they stay with their current service. One such scenario played out earlier this week. I woke up with a message in my inbox. A business P. 2 4 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

had gotten in touch. They were interested in the service I offer. The message in my inbox read, “Hi, my name is Sara. It was mentioned that your service can reduce our costs by passing it to our customers. It would be a great help to hear more about this.” I was honored and felt exuberant. I used to spend weeks cold calling and door knocking before I would even get a decent lead, let alone a sale. How far I’ve come. I now woke up to a lead. When a customer comes knocking, the number one question I ask myself is whether I’m a value add to their business? If the answer is yes, they’ll have my undivided attention. If the answer is no, I’ll have their undivided attention and advise accordingly. In this scenario, although I could’ve saved them thousands of dollars yearly, I advised them against me. They currently had an online check checkout system that worked seamlessly with their website. Using my services would have added an extra step in the sales process. While it might be a simple one, it would incorporate an added manual step for both parties. Once a customer has to think twice, the sale is less likely to happen, and I didn’t think saving these few thousand dollars yearly was worthwhile for them to take this gamble. Rebecca Montag, blogger, 8fig (https://

www.8fig.co/blog/lost-sales/ ) explains how “once a customer chooses the product they wish to purchase and add it to their cart, you want to get them to complete the checkout process as quickly as possible. The more steps are involved or the longer it takes to check out, the more opportunities they have to change their mind. In order to cut down on lost sales, make sure that the checkout process is fast, simple, and secure.” I advised them to keep with their current set up. Taking care of clients must be priority number one, two, and three. Once we’re able to verify that we have the value our customers require, your allowed to cash in too. Our clients’ needs are there to benefit both. Putting ourselves first, however, is selfish and will come back to bite. Just ask the coffee roasters. My goal when selling is to be in a position where it feels good to confidently give the right advice whether or not it affects my bank account.

Shalom Markman started selling merchant services by door knocking in NYC. He currently lives in Norfolk VA with his family and visits Florida when he gets hungry or brings on a new client. You can find him on LinkedIn.

REAL ESTATE

Two Factors That Will Shape Your Finances and Future in 2024 By Shmuel Shayowitz A cartographer and a meteorologist applied for the same job at a top tech company. During the interview, they were asked why they chose their careers. The cartographer said, “I wanted a career where I could map out my success.” The meteorologist replied, “I chose mine to forecast my own bright future.” The interviewer, amused, said, “Well, one of you will find this the perfect climate for growth, while the other might find themselves in uncharted territory!” That short anecdotal tale is the perfect segue to the two key themes that I believe will dominate this year and significantly impact your finances and future: “Jobs” and “Geography.” The year will conclude with a new president of the United States. I will go out on a limb and say that I don’t think Joe Biden will be the Democratic candidate come November. Feel free to reach out privately to find out what I think about this topic. Regardless, it will be another nail-biting showdown of red states versus blue states and expect anything but a tame battle till the end of this geographical faceoff. By now, we know that the Federal Reserve has forecasted three rate cuts in 2024, starting as early as March. Unfortunately, I think the Fed will begin cutting rates much later than expected and will ultimately be forced to cut rates much lower than their projections. I believe this will be because of a very unhealthy economy and a continued weakening jobs market. On paper, the unemployment rate is near historic lows, but it is anything but that. Even the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report from last Friday, which showed 216,000 jobs being created, has turned out to be misrepresented. In reality, December’s jobs report revealed that close to 700k people P. 2 6 / T S F C O M M U N I T YVO I C E .C O M

stopped looking for work and were therefore removed from statistical calculations. Experts revealed that a record 8.69 million people now hold multiple jobs and confirmed that since June, the economy has shed 1.5 million fulltime workers and added 796,000 part-time workers. Specific to the Jobs market, I have another radical prediction. Faced with job insecurity, more individuals will reevaluate their career paths, often leading to geographic moves seeking better opportunities or more fulfilling work. This shift will not just be about job availability but also about pursuing passions and craving work-life balance. I have partnered with a Career Coaching company to help those new to the workforce or those looking for a change optimize their opportunities. If you or your child needs help in this regard, don’t hesitate to reach out. So, the Fed will cut rates. Then what? Borrowing costs will go down, and that will have a direct impact on home prices. Logic says that as rates go down, home prices will go up. That will be true in many areas, but again, geography will play a considerable factor. There will be some regions and states that might see a slowdown in home appreciation despite lower rates. It will be a very bifurcated

market delineated county-by-county. Illegal migrants, politics, crime, tax policies and other such factors will play a vital part in the diversity of the housing market. Regarding my theme of jobs and geography, I believe Aliyah to Israel will reach new historic highs. There are reports that there has already been a 400% surge in serious consideration for Aliyah since October 7th. It is estimated that over 5 million people will move to Israel over the next few years. Career considerations, housing, and finances are just a few of the vital factors that should begin getting addressed now. Once again, I am happy to help with these discussions as they are now a regular part of my consultations. Indeed, it will be quite the year for most of us. Staying informed, adaptable, and strategically aware will be essential for individuals and businesses aiming to navigate what the wild year of 2024 will bring for your finances and future.

FOOD

Kosher Recipes Made Easy By Jamie Geller

DURATION TIME: 240 MINUTES | COOL TIME: 180 MINUTES PREP TIME: 8 MINUTES | SERVINGS: 6

BEEF PORRIDGE INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 (2 pound) flanken • 1 large onion, chopped • 12 cups water • 1 (6 ounce) package split pea soup mix with spice packet • 1 (6 ounce) package barley and Lima bean soup mix with spice packet • 15 baby carrots • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 stalks celery, cut in ¼ inch slices

PREPARATION 1. In a 6-quart stockpot, heat olive oil over medium heat. 2. Rinse meat and pat dry. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place flanken and onions in pot and sear meat by cooking it over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes until meat is lightly browned on both sides. 4. Add remaining ingredients, cover and bring to boil. Skim off any foam that rises to the surface and discard. 5. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook, uncovered for 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Ladle into bowls and serve. 6. If refrigerating overnight and reheating, you may have to add 1 to 2 cups of water and mix well to prevent burning.

Jamie Geller is the Chief Media and Marketing Officer at Aish. She is also a bestselling cookbook author, celebrity chef, television producer, and businesswoman. She’s the author of eight cookbooks and the founder of Kosher Media Network. J A N U A R Y 1 8 , 2 0 2 4 / P. 3 7
