ORTHODOX UNION’S EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT VISITS SOUTH FLORIDA

Jewish community. We can do this effectively by visiting communities, asking questions to its leaders, and understanding how to offer more effective and beneficial support.

The OU has many programs here in South Florida. Is there one main one you would like to mention?

The OU has the privilege of doing outstanding work in South Florida. There are numerous programs to be proud of including the Teach Florida program which is dedicated to making Jewish education affordable. NCSY is another organization which understands Klal Yisroel’s priorities in keeping children engaged.

infrastructure up to speed and the importance of community engagement

Why is the OU an important organization?

The OU is an organization that has within it many organizations. The general mission is to service Jewish communities in North America. The organizations within the OU focus on many different initiatives including addressing needs, material and financial; enabling kashrut; elevating engagement of people within Judaism, within the community, college campuses and public schools; advocating orthodoxy; and combatting antisemitism.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Rabbi Moshe Hauer, executive vice president of the Orthodox Union, who recently visited Boca Raton in South Florida to strengthen the ties between the OU and the area’s Orthodox community.

The goal of his visit was to focus on growing areas of Orthodox life and to learn more about the communities which the OU supports. A discussion and interview were had between The South Florida Community Voice and Rabbi Hauer.

Why is it important to visit South Florida, and especially Boca Raton?

The South Florida Jewish community, and specifically Boca Raton, is growing at a tremendous rate. In aligning with the OU mission, we are trying to do something to service the

Speaking of children, how can we connect teenagers with technology today? Many of us suffer, not only teens. Shabbos is a perfect time to disconnect in order to reconnect. We need more face-to-face communication.

What are the goals of the OU in this visit?

To understand the challenges and struggles that the community may be facing as well as see the successes and growth of the community. We need to learn about successes and failures to understand how to support communities better.

Why is the South Florida community unique?

South Florida has grown leaps and bounds, especially within the Orthodox community which is increasingly growing. South Florida sees the importance of bringing Jewish

The biggest challenge the OU faces is unenthused Jews. It is the goal of the OU to make sure the Jewish life we live is compelling. Judaism animates one’s life. We need to engage Jews better, so they learn to eliminate distraction, elevate connection, and see that it is Judaism that defines us.

Every day, Jewish individuals from around the world are positively impacted by the work of the OU. For more information on OU programming please visit www.ou.org

The OU has again compiled a list filled with a wide assortment and variety of kosher-forPassover products.

• 15 small mint leaves, for garnish, optional

• 1/2 cup dairy free chocolate chips, melted

1. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees.

2. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

3. Using a stand mixer or handheld electric mixer, beat the egg whites on high speed for about 1 minute until soft peaks form. With the mixer still on, gradually add in the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, and beat 10 minutes on high speed, or until stiff peaks form. It should be smooth and glossy.

HELPING HANDS FOOD KO-OP PROVIDES RESOURCE FOR THE JEWISH COMMUNITY

Helping Hands Food Ko-Op is a nonprofit organization working to increase access to affordable, kosher, nutritious food for hard-working families throughout South Florida.Helping Hands believes that if you allow a person to pay for his food he is empowered to get back on his feet. The mission of Helping Hands Food Ko-Op is help those families in our community who are experiencing financial strain, and lack of consistentaccess to sufficient, affordable, nutritious Kosher food. The situation may be temporary or longterm, but it deeply impacts their lives and their futures.

Helping Hands Food Ko-Op provides food and other household essentials to 80 families per week and over 600 families for Pesach who are in need of kosher food. While some families pay for their food (which is 40% cheaper than stores) others with greater need are given a partial or full credit for their food. The philosophy of the organization is to create an environment that everyone can feel like a customer and not a charity case.

Helping Hands also has a Lending Gemach which can provide interestfree loans to qualified borrowers. For Lending Gemach inquiries contact HHLendingGemach@gmail.com.

The program operates as an online grocery store. At the end of a shopping experience, items are added up at a significantly reduced cost and the individual pays via a secure website.

Individuals and families are welcome to shop weekly. When families need additional help part, or even all, of their monthly food bill is covered.

Helping Hands’ work greatly impacts the South Florida Community and works to eradicate hunger and food insufficiency, which leads to improved health for children, adults and seniors who would otherwise not have access the nutrition needed to lead a healthy life.

Because of this program, people in the South Florida Jewish Community, who would otherwise not have access to affordable, kosher, nutritious food, have the ability to feed their families.

Helping Hands Food Ko-Op believes every Jew should have access to affordable and kosher food, regardless of income. For us to serve more than 80 families per week, individual support is needed so we may continue to empower local Jewish families in need. Please donate now. Please give a helping hand and support us today.

GAMECHANGER: GOVERNOR DESANTIS SIGNS SCHOOL CHOICE BILL INTO LAW

March 27, 2023 — Governor DeSantis signed into law a bill that provides every nonpublic school student, regardless of income, with a state scholarship close to $8,000.

All those involved will tell you that as recently as one year ago (and certainly 5 years ago) this was considered impossible.

Because you advocated, voted and raised your voice, thousands of children can afford a Jewish education.

Families will be able to apply for this expanded scholarship as early as this spring or summer.

Rabbi Larson’s second grade boys in Yeshiva Elementary School located in North Miami, are enthusiastically finishing up their biggest project of the year. Spending just a little bit of time each day, they’ve colored pictures in their very own full length Megillos. The Megillos also have worksheets with the halachos of Purim. The boys have practiced following along in their Megillos to be fully prepared for Purim. Rabbi Larson is specifically teaching them how to deal with the challenges of making noise when hearing the name of Haman while following along in an 23 foot long scroll and not making any extra noise so that the adults can fulfill their mitzvah of hearing every single word.

One of his top priorities has been improving education, notably by expanding school choice and increasing funding for public schools. He has sponsored legislation to create a new voucher program for students with disabilities and bills to improve teacher training and increase transparency in school funding.

Caruso has been a vocal advocate for environmental protection and conservation. In addition to his work on education and the environment, Caruso has been involved in several other issues affecting his district and the state. He has sponsored bills to combat sober home patient abuse, Narcan distribution to combat fentanyl overdoses, bills to combat human trafficking, improve the transparency and accountability of the state’s prison system, and reduce taxes and government regulations on small businesses and entrepreneurs.

During his time in office, Caruso has strongly advocated for conservative

values and policies while working across the aisle. He is well-known for his constituent advocacy. He’s always had an open-door policy. Caruso has done tremendous work and legislation for the Jewish community. He has prime cosponsored bills that codified the federal definition of antisemitism into law in Florida. He’s also prime cosponsored a bill on Holocaust education and backed many appropriations for the Jewish community.

Caruso has consistently supported lower taxes, limited government, and individual freedoms while also working to find common ground with members of both parties to address the most pressing issues facing his district and the state.

His constituents and fellow lawmakers have noticed Caruso’s efforts. He has been recognized for his work by several organizations, including the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Americans For Prosperity, the National Federation of Independent Business, the Florida Police Benevolent Association, and many others.

This session, Caruso has sponsored a bill, HB 269, that will make crimes involving religious and ethnic animus, a third-degree felony. While it protects all religious and ethnic groups, it names antisemitism specifically since it is rising in Florida. In his own words, he will “not sit around and do nothing. Enough is enough.” It has passed its first two committee stops.

Looking ahead, Caruso is likely to continue to be a key figure in Florida politics. His commitment to conservative principles and willingness to work across the aisle make him a valuable asset in a state that has become increasingly politically divided in recent years. Whether he is fighting for better schools, cleaner water, or greater economic opportunity, Caruso remains focused on improving the lives of his constituents and making Florida a better place for all its residents.

HINDQUARTER MEATS ARE BACK

Founded by Rabbi Jonathan and Esther Benzaquen in 2014, Bakar Meats, a family-owned online kosher meat retailer, set itself apart by bringing high-end hindquarter meats back to the Jewish table. Available glatt kosher cuts include Filet Mignon, New York Strip, Picanha, and Tri-tip. While still a common practice in Israel, niqur achoraim is the intricate and timeconsuming process of removing the sciatic nerve and forbidden fats, making kosher hindquarter meat a rare delicacy.

Hindquarter Niqur became a lost art in the United States despite its roots in both Ashkenazi Jewish communities pre and post-World War II and Sephardic communities worldwide. Niqur lost its prevalence in the US, not for any prohibited reason, but only because modern-day meat processors wanted

to avoid dealing with the expense or time consumption of doing Niqur and the convenience of just selling the hindquarters to the non-Jewish market. However, for popular cuts such as Kishka, liver, and ox-tail, the practice of Niqur has been performed and maintained even up to this day.

The Benzaquen’s noticed this gap in the US kosher market and sought to fill it, making these cuts of meat available to those outside of Israel. Already a practicing rabbi, Rabbi Jonathan Benzaquen gained further semicha (rabbinic approbation) from the Jerusalem yeshiva, where he was originally ordained, learning to remove the sciatic nerve and belly fats forbidden to Jewish consumers. Bakar Meats is more than just a kosher meat company or brand. It’s about family, hard work, customer appreciation, and

Halacha (Jewish law and traditions). Bakar Meats and the Benzaquen family behind it pride themselves in offering their customers a high-end product and keeping traditions the way they were done in the times of our grandparents and parents.
