Gratitude and Appreciation for Hatzalah South Florida on Display in Boca Raton

“Thank You, South Florida” was the overarching feeling of gratitude from organizers following the first annual Hatzalah Lag Ba’Omer mega concert in Boca Raton this past Sunday. By all accounts, the Lag Ba’Omer event was an unprecedented success, as everyone who attended can attest. This year, Hatzalah South Florida raised the bar and created a concert experience for supporters unlike anything in its fourteenyear history. With over 2,500 tickets selling out quickly, the electricity and energy in the air prior to the show was truly palpable.

the connection between the performers and the audience was truly remarkable. It was an evening filled with joy, unity, and celebration, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of Lag Ba’Omer and Hatzalah South Florida.

The headliners delivered as advertised, and the show was nothing short of spectacular. With performances by the immensely talented Mordechai Shapiro and Benny Friedman, the audience was treated to an

evening of unforgettable music and entertainment. Both artists brought their unique styles and infectious energy to the stage, creating a magical atmosphere that had everyone on their feet and dancing in the aisles.

From the very first note, it was clear that this concert was special. The crowd’s enthusiasm was through the roof, and

Hatzalah leaders expressed their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended, including rabbinical, medical, and communal figures, as well as the many key sponsors who supported the concert financially. HSF also thanked the over two thousand supporters who donated to the annual HatzalahThon fundraiser. The enthusiasm and generosity of the South Florida Jewish community for Hatzalah South Florida made this year’s concert and fundraising campaign a memorable experience for all.

Physicians & Community Leaders Come Together for Event: Joining Forces with Our Israeli Colleagues for the Sake of Medicine

Last Sunday, May 19th, the Jewish Orthodox Women’s Medical Association (JOWMA) brought dozens of physicians and community leaders together for an inspirational evening hosted by Dr. Sarah Rosanel, “Joining Forces with our Israeli Colleagues for the Sake of Medicine.” A cardiologist and JOWMA board member, Dr. Rosanel and her husband Yossi hosted the evening at their home in Surfside.

Over 50 doctors, community leaders, and Israel supporters came out to hear JOWMA physicians speak, network and learn about JOWMA’s Medical Mission to Israel, which sent physicians to fill critical gaps in medical care in Israel due to the October 7th war. Dr Avi Schlager, a pediatric surgeon from Boca was in attendance as well. JOWMA sent him to Israel twice to perform surgeries in Israel and teach surgical techniques to

Israeli physicians and residents.

JOWMA also hosted the founders and leaders of LeMa’anechem. LeMa’anechem is a volunteer-based organization in Israel that serves as the liaison between patients and medical professionals by offering medical advice and counseling. Rabbi Yossi Ehrblich, founder of LeMa’anchem and Professor Joseph Press, president of LeMa’anchem addressed the audience to share about their inspirational work and hear how the South Florida physician network could help.

Dr. Sarah Rosanel shared, “The event was very inspiring. Physicians from all over South Florida came in and bonded over our love and connection to Israel and to our constant community work to better patient care.” Specialities were ranging from dermatology, to surgery, oncology, pediatrics, neuroradiology, cardiology,

primary care, internal medicine, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynecology, IVF specialists, pediatric neurology and more. Many attendees were overheard saying, “It was nice to put a face to the names that we’ve all have heard in the past, caring for community patients.”

Dr. Mira Hellman Ostrov, Gynecologic Oncologist and Chair of JOWMA Israel added, “This was a first of its kind event where two very powerful notfor-profit physician volunteer organizations joined forces to help support each other and expand their reach to help the Jewish communities locally and abroad. The dedication, warmth, determination was palpable and elating. And this was just the beginning!”

Operation Inspiration: Hear Me Out

One day, my wife looked at me and said, “You’re not even listening to me, are you?!” I thought, “Gee, that’s a strange way to start a conversation.”

Yes, this is a joke. It didn’t really happen, but humor is based in truth, which is why it makes such an impact when we can relate to a joke. There’s an idea that people tune out their spouses, when they should really be listening more, hence the joke.

I recently had an experience which drove the point home to me. I’d gone into a drug store to get something specific. It was a store I don’t generally go to, so the layout was unfamiliar to me. Therefore, when I walked in, to save time, I asked the cashier where to find the item. She said, “It’s in aisle 14 on the left-hand side.” So, I headed over to aisle 14, looked on the left-hand side, and I saw similar items to what I was looking for, but not the one I wanted. Not just the brand, but the category was not there. I walked back and forth, up and down the aisle, trying to find it.

Finally, I spied what I was looking for. It was on the bottom shelf. Now, I’m used to the standard marketing procedures where expensive items are put at eye-level, and

cheaper ones are at the bottom. This time, both the name-brand and generic items were on the bottom shelf. In fact, I couldn’t even stoop low enough to read the tags so I took a picture with my phone and read the price labels from it!

I made my purchase decision and headed to the register. The cashier asked if I’d found everything OK, as they are trained to do. I let her know that, actually, I’d had a difficult time finding the item. I said I was surprised that it was on the bottom shelf. She replied, “I told you it was. Aisle 14, lefthand side, on the bottom.”

I might have argued, to say that she’d told me aisle 14, lefthand side, but not that it was on the bottom shelf. I certainly didn’t hear her say that, or I’d have known where to look. But I

couldn’t say for sure she didn’t say that. It’s quite possible that I just stopped listening. I realized that quite often, when people are giving us instructions, we feel we have enough information and we shut off. Whether it’s listening or reading, we’re done. I’m sure many of you have taken that famous test which says at the top, “Read all instructions before taking the test.” Then it begins by saying, “Choose the correct answer for each question …” and “Fill in each circle completely…” et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum infinitum.

Towards the bottom of the instructions is a line that says, “Do not fill in any circles on this page. Put your pencil down and wait for your teacher’s instruction.” Most students don’t get that far and furiously begin to fill in the circles to answer what turn out to be relatively easy questions. As they do, they’re smiling to themselves with how well they’re doing at answering the questions. Only at the end, when the teacher reads all the instructions out loud, slowly, do they begin to feel sheepish about what they’ve done. They don’t feel so smart anymore, because they got it wrong!

They should have been

sitting there with blank papers, but because they didn’t follow directions, they ended up doing unnecessary work and looking foolish. I remember getting this test in maybe sixth or seventh grade and there were one or two kids who didn’t write anything. I’m not sure whether they read everything first, or had heard about this test before, but they certainly were smiling and proud of themselves for not getting caught in the trap.

When this occurred at the drug store, and I realized that I’d stopped listening, I considered that this is something many of us do. We think we understand; we think we’ve got it covered;

and we don’t need to hear any more. Often, like in my case, we end up struggling because we didn’t pay attention; because we tuned out when we only had part of the message.

So often, people hear what they want to hear. They ask a question of a Rav or respected individual, and then they stop listening when they get out of the response whatever they were looking for. It sounds like a good plan, but they’re actually setting themselves up for failure, potential struggles, and not living up to Hashem’s plan.

When our parents or teachers say things, we think we know better. We forget they’re

speaking from experience, or rationalize that the world is different and they don’t know what is correct in THIS situation. Sometimes, we might even do it to Hashem.

At Har Sinai, we said Naaseh v’Nishma, we will do and we will listen. One understanding is that we will do what Hashem wants because we’re willing to listen to Him. All I’m saying is this: word to the wise; make sure you don’t finish listening before He’s finished speaking.

and the top 1% nationally - facilitating nearly 6 Billion dollars in home sales - I bring you insights grounded in experience and authenticity, backed by the most upto-date sources

Introduction:

As the first quarter of 2024 unfolds, the real estate markets in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties continue to develop, each displaying unique trends amid various economic pressures and opportunities Here’s an over view of the performance and dynamics in these key areas:

Miami-Dade County: Resilience and Growth

Miami-Dade County's real estate market has demonstrated resilience, with a 1 5% increase in single-family home sales compared to last year, totaling 2 , 4 49 homes sold in Q1 2024 This growth is supported by strong global migration and company relocations to the area The luxur y segment, in particular, has seen a notable surge, with sales of million-dollar homes rising by 4 47% in March 2024

Broward County: Mixed Signals with a Strong Luxury Market

homes priced at $1 million and above increasing by 7% year-over-year As new listings approach pre-pandemic levels, the market is adjusting to new dynamics, offering more options for buyers and contributing $278 million to the local economy in March 2024

Palm Beach County: Tension Between High Demand and Low Supply

In Palm Beach County, the real estate market is characterized by high demand coupled with low supply, which led to a 7 8% increase in luxur y home sales Nevertheless, total home sales declined sharply by 20 6% With inventor y levels 28 6% below historical averages, the rise in new listings offers a glimmer of hope for more balanced market conditions in the future

Economic Impact and Market Dynamics

The real estate sectors in these counties have collectively had a significant economic impact, with home sales contributing over $810 million locally in March 2024 The market has also seen a high volume of cash transactions, particularly in Palm Beach, where 5 4.3% of sales were cash purchases, indicating a strong presence of foreign and out-of-state buyers.

April 2024, according to Freddie Mac. Despite these challenges, there is an appreciation in home prices across the region, with Palm Beach leading with an 11 3% increase in the median price of single-family homes year-over-year

Inventory and Market Health

While inventor y levels are improving, they remain below desired levels Broward and Palm Beach counties, in particular, are witnessing significant increases in new listings, which should help meet the ongoing demand The low rate of distressed sales across all counties signals a healthy market environment, setting the stage for potential growth and stability

This over view provides a snapshot of the current state of Southeast Florida’s real estate market as it navigates through various economic conditions, reflecting both the resilience and the challenges faced by each county

Pay Less but Pay More. Unmasking Superficial Value

In a clever social experiment, Payless Shoes opened up a luxurious pop-up boutique branded as “Palessi.” Their store was in a super highend luxury mall, with elaborate furnishings and displays rivaling those of Gucci and Chanel. The twist? The store was stocked with standard Payless shoes, typically priced between $10 and $30, but now marked up to hundreds or thousands of dollars, simply because of the opulent setting. They invited the industry’s most prominent fashion buyers to the grand opening. There were lines out the door. Interviews with select buyers proclaimed their praise for the shoes, deeming them well worth the high prices because of their style and comfort. Payless managed to sell dozens of shoes in a short time before revealing the store’s true identity.

rely on facades to attract clients. Flashy websites, expensive cars, and high-end branding are used to project an image of success. Yet, this often does not translate into quality service. While the allure of polished marketing and sophisticated tools is convincing, the true value lies in the expertise and personalized advice of those whom you will actually be working with.

Let’s be real; Businesses often invest heavily in extravagant marketing to create an image of superiority and exclusivity. In finance, high-budget ads feature

However, beneath this shiny surface, the reality is often very different. Most financial institutions offer standardized products that may not cater to individual needs. Furthermore, the advice given is often generic, and the personalized touch that clients need to genuinely optimize their wealth is frequently missing.

Still today, many real estate and mortgage professionals

Both in finance and real estate, finding advisors who focus on substance rather than image is crucial. An experienced professional takes the time to understand your unique situation, goals, and objectives. This personalized approach ensures that the advice and strategies they provide are tailored to your needs, helping you grow your net worth effectively.

Moreover, a qualified professional will be transparent about fees and services while providing clear, straightforward answers to your questions.

They prioritize your education, helping you understand the current market landscape to make informed decisions. A worthy professional understands the local market, and has strong financial competence. They build their reputation on a track record of successful transactions and satisfied clients. They provide honest, practical advice, helping you navigate the complex world of real estate with confidence.

The Payless “Palessi” experiment is a powerful reminder that appearances can be deceiving. In both finance and real estate, it’s essential to look beyond the superficial

allure of shiny marketing and sleek branding. True value comes from the expertise and personalized advice of experienced professionals who focus on your best interests. Choosing advisors who prioritize substance over style will optimize your wealth, maximize your home equity, and achieve lasting financial success.

The Ayatollah of Execution: My Memories of Ebrahim Raisi

He became president in a sham election and was being groomed as the Islamic Republic’s next Supreme Leader. I won’t miss him.

As I was following the news about the crash of the Iranian president’s helicopter, I thought back to when I first heard the name Ebrahim Raisi. It was when he was appointed, in 2016, as the chairman of Astan Quds Razavi, an old foundation that manages the donations, whether cash or property, to the eighth Shia Imam and also controls the industries that belong to it. Ironically, I didn’t notice his name from the domestic Persian news, but from a March 9, 2016 article in The Guardian. The article wisely mentioned that Raisi could play a significant role in the succession of Iran’s Supreme Leader, though it didn’t name him as the most likely option to take this role.

A year later, I heard his name again. This time at university, when he was mentioned in campus debates as a potential candidate for the presidential election. A few months later, Raisi officially became Hassan Rouhani’s main opponent in the election. And the first thing about Raisi that went viral was his role in the 1988 executions. As a member of the Council of Death, he signed the death sentences of at

least 4,000 political prisoners. He came to be known as the Ayatollah of Execution.

In that trimester (Feb-June 2017), I had to attend a course on the history of the Islamic Revolution. It’s a mandatory course for all students in all Iranian universities, no matter what they study. So every week, we could argue with the professor about politics and the election. At first glance, the professor didn’t seem like a bad person. He was funny and the atmosphere in the class was warm. But when it came to criticizing the Islamic Republic’s actions in repressing and killing the political opposition, his dark side appeared.

When we mentioned individual assassinations such as Ahmad Kasravi or Salman Rushdie (who hadn’t been stabbed yet), he replied that if a source of emulation (high-ranking clergy in Shia Islam) allows the assassination of an individual, it is impeccable.

Moreover, he quoted Shia clerics such as Ayatollah Misbah Yazdi that in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 60 of the Quran, God has assigned Muslims the duty of instilling fear in the hearts of their enemies. So terror is not only allowed, it’s encouraged!

And when we started talking about the mass execution of 1988, he gave us the same answer all the authorities of the Islamic Republic and their supporters have been repeating all these years: They don’t try to deny it or reduce the number of people executed, they just say that it was necessary for national security and that those who were executed deserved such punishment.

Sometimes, in order to show that Islam sanctioned the massacre, they also talk about the story of the Banu Qurayza tribe, a Jewish community in 7th century Arabia, living in Medina where Muhammad established his sovereignty. Apparently, during a war, the Jewish tribe was accused of betraying Muhammad and of collaborating with the enemies so Muhammad ordered the execution of all their men and pubescent boys, and the enslavement of their women and children. People like our professor and many of the supporters of the Islamic Republic use this story as a legal precedent

P.46 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM

to justify their horrible actions, that yes, Islam doesn’t forbid mass murder! Even after October 7, mentioning this story in their tweets and posts was common.

Ebrahim Raisi lost that election and Rouhani remained president of Iran until 2021, but even in Rouhani’s cabinet, there was a minister – a colleague of Raisi’s –who had been a member of the 1988 Death Council! Now that I look back at it, I can’t figure out why I voted for Rouhani in 2017. Only to prevent Raisi from becoming president? But what was the difference? The policies of the Islamic Republic are determined by the Supreme Leader, not the president.

In 2021, Raisi finally became president of the Islamic Republic of Iran after a sham election. Between the two elections, the Supreme

Leader appointed Raisi as head of the judiciary. During his tenure in the judiciary, I was a journalist in Iran. What I remember from that time are the endless efforts to make propaganda about how Raisi was improving justice in the country. The intention to make a superhero out of Ebrahim Raisi was blatant. Even his clerical rank was suddenly upgraded and he was considered an ayatollah. And not only ayatollah, but Ayatollah Doctor! Although he entered religious schools after only finishing elementary school, the Islamic Republic’s educational system allowed him to obtain a Ph.D degree.

So, especially after the Islamic Republic Guardian Corps commanders got close to him and the Supreme Leader arranged a shameful sham election (even by

Islamic Republic standards), it became obvious to everyone that Ayatollah Doctor Raisi, who is improving justice in Iran, is the most likely person to be the next Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. He was supposed to be the successor and now he is dead! Basically, nine years of investment in cultivating the next supreme leader died in this helicopter crash. Of course, Raisi the president can easily be replaced, but Raisi the successor cannot! The Islamic Republic will face a serious succession crisis, and that’s why I’m happy.

NORPAC’s Annual Mission to Washington a Day of Advocacy for Israel

On Wednesday, May 15, 1,200 participants arrived on Capitol Hill for the 30th annual NORPAC Mission to Washington.

NORPAC President Dr. Ben Chouake reminded the participants, “We are here today as American citizens to ask our legislative leaders to continue what has been, since the Truman administration, America’s priority: supporting Israel, the Jewish homeland, a critical ally of America, and the only democracy in the Middle East.” Chouake continued, “This is not a time to withhold weapons from Israel. We are here today trying to get our kidnapped … citizens back. We are here today to let our leaders

know, in this fight against Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, is Israel doing the heavy lifting for America and the free world.”

After a standing ovation, Rep. Ritchie Torres remarked, “I have the honor of representing a vibrant Jewish community in Riverdale that believes deeply in the U.S.-Israel relationship.” Torres continued, “I feel one of the most important principles in life is the Golden Rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We in the United States should treat Israel with the same empathy and respect that we would wish to be treated if we were fighting for our survival and our security. I’ve often said the greatest threat

to our democracy does not come from the far right or from the far left. It comes from the cowardice of a center that lives in fear of the extremes.”

Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford noted, “When I first came to the Congress a little over a decade ago, the issue about Israel was nonpartisan. What I have seen over the past decade has been this shift. My focus has been very simple: Israel is our ally. This should not be a Republican or Democrat issue. This should be an American issue.” Lankford continued, “Our State Department years ago gave this warning. History has shown wherever antisemitism has gone unchecked, persecution of others

has been present or not far behind. Defeating antisemitism must be the great cause of importance not only for Jews but for all people who value humanity and justice.”

Referring to the Antisemitism Awareness Act, Lankford said, “It’s being challenged saying it would limit free speech in America. It would do no such thing. You’re still allowed to say any dumb thing that you want to be able to say. You just can’t intimidate and violate someone else’s rights in the same process. But on a college campus, if a group of students are intimidating Jewish students, preventing them from getting to class and inhibiting their rights, that shouldn’t be allowed and should be called out for what it is.”

On Iran sanctions, Lankford noted, “We see Iran as the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world. Iran is the one destabilizing the region, supplying weapons to Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Gaza, and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Our enemy is not the Iranian people. Our enemy is the Iranian regime, who

even oppresses their own people.”

Lankford concluded, “We’re Americans, this should be who we are, this should be what we stand for all the time. For all of us, let’s continue to be able to speak up for the rights of everyone consistently.”

NORPAC’s participants advocated for the Iran Sanctions Enforcement Act (H.R. 6201/S. 3197). Senators were asked to support the Strengthening Tools to Counter the Use of Human Shields Act (having passed the House 4194). They also asked the lawmakers to publicly support Israel’s efforts to stop Hezbollah from destroying Israel.

H.R.6090, the Antisemitism Awareness Act, passed the House 320-91, requires the Department of Education to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism when enforcing federal antidiscrimination laws. The identical S.3141 needs support in the Senate. Members of Congress were also asked to ask President Biden to stop delaying critical arms

shipments to Israel.

Regarding the Israel-Hamas war, participants called for the immediate release of all hostages, including five Americans. Alex, a 10th grader from Frisch, said, “I was a little surprised and heartened to see non-Jewish senators support us. Arkansas Sen. John Boozman made pretty good points, how we shouldn’t just rely on people in Congress. We need to take matters into our own hands. For example, not voting for anti-Israel leaders.”

Alyssa, a 10th grader, noted, “I was amazed seeing all the pictures of the hostages in many senators’ offices. I was especially struck by the full wall of hostages’ pictures in Sen. Fetterman’s office.”

Esther, a seventh grader, commented, “Many members or their staff gave us a similar message. The protestors or supporters from the other side are on the Hill and come to their offices often. We need to be in Washington as much as we can. I am glad I went on the NORPAC mission.”

Kosher Recipes Made Easy

• 40MIN DURATION • 25MIN COOK TIME • 15MIN PREP TIME • 4 SERVINGS

EASY SABICH

Israel’s lesser known, but in no way less delicious, sandwich, Sabich is an earthy combo of eggplant and hard-boiled eggs. Stuffed into a pita with tahini, parsley, amba (tangy pickled mango sauce), and cucumber salad, Sabich is the traditional breakfast of the Iraqi Jewish community. Like most simple dishes, the WOW factor comes from great ingredients, well-prepared and combined perfectly. READ: don’t leave out the amba, tahini, or cucumber salad — the whole shebang is in perfect harmony and sublime.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 seedless cucumber, unpeeled and diced small

• 1 small red onion, diced small

• 1 pint grape tomatoes, sliced

• Several tablespoons flat-leaf parsley

• Zest and juice from 1 lemon

• Extra virgin olive oil, such as Colavita extra virgin olive oil

• Kosher salt

• 1 large eggplant, cut into ¼-inch thick rounds

• ⅓ cup tahini or green carrot-top tahini

• 1 large garlic clove, grated on a microplane

• 4 hard-boiled eggs, not overcooked (we want a creamy yolk), sliced

• 4 pitas, warmed

• 1 cup finely shredded cabbage

• Garnishes: chopped Israeli pickles for serving, amba for serving

PREPARATION

Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

1. In a small bowl, combine cucumber, onions,, sliced tomatoes, and parsley. Add 1 tablespoon evoo, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, kosher salt, and pepper. Allow to marinate.

2. Place eggplant on lined sheet pan and

generously drizzle with evoo, salt, and pepper. Roast, turning the slices after 15 minutes, until browned and slightly crispy on both sides, about 25 minutes total.

3. Combine tahini with grated garlic, salt, lemon zest and juice. Whisk until creamy and lightened in color to pale beige.

4. Toss cabbage with several tablespoons of tahini.

5. Arrange several slices of eggplant in pita. Spoon in some tahini, egg slices, more tahini, cabbage, Israeli salad, amba and pickles. HEAVEN!
