NEW WIG SALON OPENS IN HOLLYWOOD

P14 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM

Meet Erez and Lilach, a couple that has moved all the way from Israel, and just opened up an incredible wig salon in the heart of Hollywood, Florida. You can find Zohar Wigs Salon of Stirling Road, in the same shopping center as Kosher Central supermarket.

South Florida Community Voice (SFCV): Tell us a little about yourselves and what you have to offer:

Lilach: I have been in the wig industry for over 15 years, having provided wig services for the ultraorthodox sector, medical wigs, and hair extensions. In Israel, I ran my wig salon, Zohar Wigs Salon.

Erez: I have been a hair stylist for over 25 years, and specialize in haircuts, coloring, hair extensions and hair filling using the unique POR method I have developed.

SFCV: I see your wig selection and I am amazed at how natural and real they look and feel. What is your secret to creating such beautiful wigs?

Lilach: Thank you! I take pride in my wigs and choose the hair for my wigs carefully. After choosing the hair, the next step is working hand in hand with my seamstresses to ensure the highest quality and most natural looking wig is created, with each and every piece created to perfection.

The wigs you see right now have been created with premium and hand picked Russian, European, and Brazilian hair.

SFCV:Can you explain the difference between the hairs?

Lilach: Sure. Russian hair is a very fine hair, the opposite of Brazilian hair, which is a thicker hair, great for that perfect curly wig. Our main source of hair for our wigs comes from European hair, mostly from Eastern Europe. The quality hair from these countries check off all the boxes when it comes to high quality hair, which is exactly what is needed to create the perfect wig.

SFCV: I see you have a large variety of wigs in stock!

Lilach: Yes, we do! I have an assortment of over 200 wigs, and this is only about 20% of what I will have to offer. I am still waiting on the rest of the wigs I have created to arrive.

SFCV: Wow! That is a lot of wigs. What are the different style wigs you offer?

Lilach: I have lace top, lace front and silk top wigs, in many colors, lengths and styles. I can assure you, we have the perfect wig for every woman!

SFCV: One last question: what is the price range?

Lilach: Because we are the ones who buy the hair and my seamstresses sew my wigs, I am able to provide for my costumers a wig with no compromise on quality, at the price they want to see.

Despite the rising prices of wigs, I have been able to maintain incredible pricing without compromising on the quality.

In honor of our grand opening, I invite everyone to come see our new salon and enjoy a discount of up to 50% on their new wig.

SFCV: Thank you Erez and Lilach for inviting me into your new salon, and wishing you much success! South Florida is lucky to have Zohar Wigs Salon, giving each woman the opportunity to purchase and enjoy the perfect wig.

Zohar Wig Salon is located at 5650 Stirling Rd, Hollywood, FL 33021 and can be reached at Lilach 954-605-0225 or Erez 754-274-1428

THE MURRAY MEYERSON DAY OF JUDICIAL EDUCATION AT MIZRAHI TORAH ACADEMY

Mizrahi Torah Academy (“MTA”) recently hosted a unique program for their students, called “The Murray Meyerson Day of Judicial Education.” In memory of former Miami judge and Mayor Murray Meyerson, the day focused on student education and awareness about the Torah and American judicial systems.

Mr. Murray Meyerson was a wellrespected Miami judge and mayor, known for his staunch support of the Jewish people, ethical approach, humility, and kindness. As a professional, he risked his political career by favoring the Jewish residents of Miami Beach against the hotel developers. As a person, he showed exemplary respect to his parents, especially when he insisted that his aging mother live with him later in life,

a hallmark of his kindness and humility. As Mayor of Miami, he once went to a restaurant and the line to get in was out the door. He refused to accept any “special favors” to move to the front of the line and chose to humbly wait outside like everyone else.

MTA’s teachers worked hard to incorporate what Mr. Meyerson stood for in their engaging program to honor his legacy. Connecting it to the Limudei Kodesh department, the 5th8th grade boys were vividly engaged in a mock Bais Din trial about a baseball that smashed into someone’s car. After students prepared and debated the issue, a “Bais Din” of three students voiced their opinions, citing Torah sources to support their opinions, and arrive at a Psak/ruling. On the girls campus, Mr. Baruch Heller prepared his 7-8th grade

P24 / TSFCOMMUNITYVOICE.COM

students to present on the American Constitution and Bill of Rights with the 4-6th grade girls in attendance.

Even the kindergarten was able to participate and connect to judicial education on their level. Kindergarten teacher Morah Judy enlisted the assistance of the 7-8th grade girls to engage the kindergarteners with a puppet show on a mock court case. The children, all of whom were laughing, spellbound, and entertained, absorbed foundational lessons of the justice system.

The marquee presentation was when MTA had the honor to host special guest speaker Rabbi Ephraim Friedman, Shlita, the Dayan (judge)

of the North Miami Beach Kollel. Rabbi Friedman engaged the students by discussing real world aspects of a Bais Din, fascinating court cases and their decisions, and Torah stories about some historic cases. He shared with the students that while we generally give the benefit of the doubt to others, Jewish judges do not do so during a court case. However, once the case is over and they each accept the judgement, the parties are both looked upon as Tzadikim (even the one who lost the case).

The program was coordinated by Head of School Mrs. Samantha Hirsch, Associate Principal Rabbi Dovid Azerad, and Director of Development Rabbi Yisroel Hecht.

They noted how the day was structured to maximize the students’ connection to the goals of the day in the hallmark MTA “small-class-sizewith-big-impact” approach geared towards honoring the former judge and mayor. As Mrs. Hirsch explained, “Different grade levels experienced an age-appropriate interactive activity, where the judicial system came alive, from both the Torah and American perspectives.”

MTA is confident that by honoring his memory with a day of judicial education, Murray Meyerson’s legacy continues on with the students learning about him as a person and the professional impact he made on the greater South Florida community.

FALL RECIPES THAT ARE CO MFORTING, HEARTY, AND DELICIOUS

HEALTHIER PUMPKIN CHOCOLATE CHIP LOAF

Recipe by Elizabeth Kratz

INGREDIENTS:

• 3 cups white whole wheat flour

• 2 tsp baking soda

• 2 tsp baking powder

• 1 tsp salt

• 4 tsp ground cinnamon

• ½ tsp ground nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice mix

• 4 large eggs, beaten

• 2 cups sugar

• 1½ cups canola oil

• 2 cups pumpkin

• 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Sift dry ingredients together.

2. Beat eggs, sugar and oil until light in color.

3. Add, alternately, dry ingredients and pumpkin, mixing between each addition. Stir in chocolate chips.

4. Pour into a large, greased tube pan (or 9-by-13-inch pan) until half full. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes, until dry in the center.

This cake also may be baked in muffin tins, two 8-by-8-inch pans, or two large loaf pans or three small ones. The baking time will be shorter if you use smaller pans or muffin tins, so keep an eye on them. This recipe can be easily halved or doubled.

MOROCCAN BEEF CHILI

Recipe by Kenneth Friedman

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 large yellow onion, diced

• 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger

• 6 garlic cloves, minced (about 3 teaspoons)

• 1 pound ground beef

• 2 large carrots, rinsed and chopped into rounds (I don’t peel my carrots)

• 1 large can diced tomatoes, with juice

• 1 green pepper, diced

• 1 cup chicken stock

• 5 tablespoons mild harissa, or 3 to 4 tablespoons spicy harissa

• 1.5 tablespoons cumin seeds or powdered cumin

• 2 teaspoons smoked paprika

• Pinch cinnamon

• 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

• 1 tablespoon kosher salt

• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• ½ cup cilantro, chopped (optional—if you like cilantro!)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Heat the oil in a pot; add onions, ginger, garlic. Stir and add beef. Stir until beef is browned.

2. Add carrots, tomatoes, pepper and stir for a few minutes.

3. Add chicken stock. Then add seasonings (cinnamon, cumin, harissa, smoked paprika).

4. Bring to boil then reduce and add chickpeas and salt and pepper. Simmer for another 20-30 minutes.

If you decided “yes” on the cilantro, now’s the time to garnish your bowl and serve.

HEARTY FALL SOUP

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 lb. of lean beef, cut into cubes *optional

• About 2 lbs. of cracked marrow bones *optional

• 3 onions, diced

• 1 cup of chopped celery

• 1 chopped parsnip

• 1 turnip cubed

• All the veggies in your fridge that are tired (just dice ‘em slice ‘em and toss them in)

• 1 can of red kidney beans

• 1 can of lima beans

• 1 cup of sliced mushrooms

• 1 cup of barley

• 4 cups of chicken or beef broth base or four cups of your favorite parve vegetable stock

• 1 8 oz. can of crushed tomatoes

• 4 cloves of garlic crushed

• 1 quart of tomato juice

• ½ cup of olive oil

• 1 or 2 bay leaves

• 1 bunch of dill (chop some on the side and reserve)

• 1 bunch parsley (chop some of it finely and reserve)

• 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed

• 1 bunch of scallions, (chop and reserve)

• 4 cups of filtered water

DIRECTIONS:

1. Brown the onions, garlic, mushrooms and beef in the oil in a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed frying pan on medium heat. When the onions are golden brown and the meat is fairly well browned, add everything to your large pot, except the chopped parsley and dill.

2. Toss in the tomato juice, the water, the soup base, the bay leaf (or two, depending on your taste), cover and bring to a boil–then lower the flame to simmer and let the flavors blend for at least two hours.

3. Skim the top, and stir often to prevent barley from sticking to the bottom of the pot. You can add any vegetables you have in the fridge that are getting tired–peas, corn niblets, diced red or yellow peppers, beans, etc. and spice it up with your favorites–from a few pinches of paprika and fresh cracked black pepper to additional garlic and onion powder–if it gets too salty, because you are in love, just throw in more water and potatoes! If you want a Mediterranean flavor add a teaspoon of oregano or zatar and a handful of red lentils.

4. Don’t forget to fish out the bay leaves before you serve the soup! Sprinkle each bowl of soup with the freshly chopped dill, parsley and scallions, or pour the soup into a large tureen, sprinkle with the fresh herbs and scallions.

Pile assortments of warm crisp mini rolls and chunks of rye bread or marble bread in baskets and let people help themselves. A platter of sandwiches or a “make your own” bar with cold cuts and condiments, would be perfect.

INTERVIEW WITH DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR FLORIDA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, ANDY THOMPSON (DISTRICT 91)

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT IN TIMES WE ARE LIVING RIGHT NOW, WITH SUCH INFLATION AND ECONOMIC STRESS?

Over the past couple years, the Florida Legislature has had its priorities misplaced. It has been spending its time on manufactured culture war issues like banning books, punishing free speech, and even declaring that strawberry shortcake should be the State of Florida’s official dessert (I wish I was joking). Instead, we need to be focused on the critical economic issues that are affecting every Floridian. We should be working to reduce costs and addressing the State’s property insurance crisis.

WITH SUCH INFLATION AND ECONOMIC STRESS, DO YOU HAVE ANY STEPS ON HOW TO HELP IMPROVE THE ECONOMY AND INFRASTRUCTURE IN OUR AREA?

Improving our economy starts with keeping our State an attractive place for business. To do that, we need to keep our taxes low, which is what I’ve done in my time on the Boca Raton City Council; in fact, in my four years on the Council, we have lowered taxes FOUR TIMES. Improving infrastructure has also been a passion of mine. On the City Council, I have championed the imrpovement of our roads and transportation systems to make our area safer. In the Florida Legislature, I will make sure that we bring back to our area the necessary resources so that these improvements can continue.

WHAT IS YOUR STAND ON GUN PURCHASING IN FLORIDA AS WELL AS CARRYING CONSEALED WEAPONS?

I believe in the Second Amendment but also support stonger background checks and expanding red flag laws. I am opposed to open carry legislation which would allow for the carrying of weapons without concealment, training, or permits which would create a Wild West-type of environment.

LASTLY BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, ANY SPECIFIC POLICIES OR PLATFORMS YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT AND WANT TO IMPLEMENT?

I am passionate about improving our infrastructure, keeping our economy strong, making public safety a priority, and strengthening our communities of faith. I’ve mentioned the first two

above, but on the latter two, I have been a firm supporter of public safety in my time on the Boca Raton City Council. Each year, I have voted to provide more resources to our police officers and fire department to make sure that our first responders have the training and resources they need to keep us safe. Because of my steadfast commitment to public safety, all of our police organization and firefighter organizations have endorsed me as the best candidate in this race. Regarding our communities of faith, I believe strongly that society is at its best when our houses of worship are thriving. This takes several forms. First we need to push back on the unfortunate incease in incidents of anti-Semitism, including some here locally. A few months ago, the City Council heard an application to convert a single family house to a mikvah. Several neighbors opposed the mikvah using very ugly language directed at the local Orthodox community - lots of “them” and “those people.” I spoke up at the City Council and made clear that the Boca Raton that I live in - and want to live in - is better than that. I’ve also been a champion for local religious schools, including helping the Torah Academy and Congregation B’nai Israel in Boca Raton to expand their campuses and make them more secure.

We reached out to Peggy GossettSeidman, the Republican candidate and didn’t receive a response

TRUE ROYALTY

A recent vignette took place at Mizrahi Torah Academy that highlights the personalized attention given to students and the overall educational approach.

Towards the end of a school day, a little five-yearold girl in kindergarten asked MTA’s Mehahel Ruchni Rabbi Avrohom Yachnes why she had to dress modestly. As it was the end of the school day, he told her that he would designate a special meeting to talk to her about it the next day. The little girl got into her carpool, enthusiastically telling her parents that she had a special one-on-one meeting with the Rabbi.

The next day came, and Rabbi Yachnes sat down with her and presented her with a special gift. It was a framed portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the recently deceased queen of England, in a very regal pose, elegantly dressed in her modest way. Rabbi Yachnes explained to the little girl that modesty equates royalty, and since all Jewish women are princesses, the way they dress should reflect their royal stature. In the top corner of the framed picture, Rabbi Yachnes included a small picture of the little girl herself, wearing a queen costume that she had coincidentally worn in class on a previous day in an unrelated playtime forum. On the top of the portrait, Rabbi Yachnes hand wrote her a note that read, “Dear _____ , YOU are royalty also!”

The little girl went home with her question answered, beaming with pride that she too is a royal figure just like the Queen of England. More importantly, she walked away with a renewed sense of pride in how she dresses every day. This is just one of many stories that highlight MTA’s hallmark approach to education and wholesome development of every aspect of each students’ growth.
