FEATURE STORY

Remembering Those Who Perished

The Butterfly Project is now a global memorial with over 200 communities around the world participating.

Our 2019 Community Yom HaShoah Commemorative Candle Lighting and Holocaust Memorial Service, open to all, begins at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 5th, held in the Lipeles Auditorium at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. This annual Yom HaShoah event is truly a community effort with rabbis and cantors from all the local synagogues participating in the memorial service. This year, the service will be led by Rabbi Nancy Myers of Beth David. Guest Speaker – Yetta Kane

Yetta Kane is the distinguished speaker of this year’s Yom HaShoah Day of Remembrance 2019/5779 event.

Yetta Kane is an author, speaker, supporter of many Jewish organizations, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and Holocaust survivor. She was born in Myadel, Poland in 1932 and grew up on a farm with horses, cows and chickens. Her family fled Nazi occupation to Siberia in 1942 and eventually, in 1949, to Southern California. She met her husband, David, in Los Angeles and they married in 1952. For years, Yetta worked at Charm Fit of Hollywood where she crafted bras for such stars as Zsa Zsa Gabor and Ava Gardner. Through hard work and dedication, Yetta and David built comfortable lives, ultimately settling in Long Beach, CA where they raised their three children. David had a wonderful career and served as Cantor at Temple Beth Shalom for over three decades. 2

Over her long career of service, Yetta has volunteered at Temple Beth Shalom, and has been active with National Council of Jewish Women, Mothers of Israel, Jewish National Fund, and the Russian Jewish community. She has been invited to speak at dozens of schools throughout Los Angeles, Long Beach and Orange County, as well as at the University of Southern California (USC). She has also been involved with Chapman University in Holocaust education. Along with her husband, David, she is the author of the memoir, How to Survive Anything. She speaks English, Russian, Hebrew, Polish, Spanish, Yiddish, and German. In addition to her three children, she is blessed to have six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Given her long varied background, Yetta is fond of saying that she “is a student of the university of life”. Gerda Seifer Yom HaShoah Fund The Jewish Community Foundation has honored Gerda Seifer by naming the Yom HaShoah Fund in her honor. The fund makes possible the annual Community Yom HaShoah observance program, as well as other Holocaust education activities and programs. If you wish to continue the important work of memorializing the Holocaust, please consider a donation to the Gerda Seifer Yom HaShoah Fund. Please make your tax-deductible donation payable to the: Jewish Community Foundation and mail to 3801 East Willow Street, Long Beach, CA 90815 or call (562) 426-7601 ext. 1314 to make your donation by phone. Donations received by April 25, 2019 will be recognized in the printed event program. The Butterfly Project The Butterfly Project was co-founded in 2006 by educator Jan Landau and artist Cheryl Rattner Price as an initiative at the San Diego Jewish Academy to take Holocaust education out of the textbook and bring it to life to inspire students to make the world a better place. It uses the lessons of the Holocaust to educate about the dangers of hatred and bigotry, and cultivates empathy and social responsibility. Participants create butterflies that are displayed as symbols of resilience and hope, with the goal of creating 1.5 million butterflies around the world—one for each child who perished in the Holocaust, and honoring the survivors. Our community organizations will be making butterflies that will be hung in the Lentzner Family Promenade as part of our annual Communitywide Yom HaShoah Observance. For more information about Yom HaShoah, please contact: Dana Schneider-Chanzit at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1067

Passover is All About Connecting By Rabbi Yitzchok Newman

The Seder of Passover is the most widespread holy practice in the Jewish community worldwide. According to the Pew Research survey 93% of families in Israel and 70% of families in the United States come together for the Seder meal. The Haggadah is the book widely used to guide the folks through the evening. One of my highlights is the passage about the four sons. And at the same time it is perplexing. I understand the wise, simple and even the mischievous son but the one that ‘does not know to ask’ who is he? If it was knowledge alone that he lacked it would have been covered with the simple son. Why is there a distinction? Several incidents that have happened recently bring it to light. It happened on a Shabbat a while back. I was walking home with my lawyer friend in front of a church in our area. We

6

were having an animated talk and not paying a lot of attention to our surroundings when we heard a loud shout from a passing pickup truck. As we looked up we saw a teenager on the passenger side hurling a cup full of soda and ice that landed squarely on both of us. I was startled, but my lawyer friend, with his keen eye immediately looked at the back of the truck and picked up the license plate number. We both agreed that we had to pursue this incident through the local police department. What we found out even surprised me. The police tracked the driver of the pickup truck who took no blame but informed them who the passenger was. The next call went to the parent of the teenager. The mom answered the phone and she shouted at her son if he had thrown a cup of soda at two Jewish people who were walking in front of the church. When he answered in the affirmative she shouted back, ‘Don’t you know that you are Jewish?’ The

teenager was underage so the authorities called him in and gave a scare that I hope he remembers to this day. But the question that begs to be asked is, how could a Jewish teenager do this? He could not have mistaken me walking on Shabbat as anything but Jewish – no mistaken identity there. And then the same question begs to be asked about a recent incident in Newport Beach at which a picture was taken of some high schoolers standing by a cup formation in the shape of a swastika and smiling. One of those teenagers was Jewish and his mother was appalled when she discovered that he was involved. How does this happen? These teenagers may have known that they were Jewish but may not have had any further knowledge of Judaism and, even more so, did not connect with their Jewish heritage. The key word in the ‘son who does not know‘ is know or ‘Daat’ which in Hebrew means to connect. ‘Daat’

| JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE | ADAR II-NISAN | 5779

is the link bridge between knowledge and developing a connection with the ideas through taking action. That life connection is what is missing in many of our youth today. Fast forward; just last week the Hebrew Academy celebrated its 50th year since its founding with a dinner at the Four Seasons. During the dinner we had special representatives of the various years at the Academy. The several hundred people who attended were gratified to hear how the students now in their forties and fifties were connected with and leaders in their Jewish communities. To top off the evening the 3rd grade choir sang a song that is highlighted by the lines “I’m a Jew and I’m proud and I’ll sing it out loud for that is what I will always be. “ Contrast the two and you can discern the stark difference. The above scenarios would not have been possible with youth who connect and live with the pride of the richness of

their heritage. Education is not only acquiring the knowledge but also making the connection with the community and feeling proud of who you are and who you represent. We have an opportunity at the Seder to engage the person who has not fully developed that connection and ignite the spark by connecting with the community with the many opportunities that are offered. Let’s start with the eating of the Matzah which is referred to as the ‘bread of faith’ and continue the practice of sitting around together not only once a year but getting involved in Jewish life. My wish is that next year in Jerusalem you will recite the four sons but wonder why there are four when all you have around you is the wise one fully connected to his people and community. Happy Passover! Rabbi Yitzchok Newman is the Head of School of The Hebrew Academy in Huntington Beach, CA.

Message from the Executive Director

Passover is the time of year when Jews celebrate our freedom from bondage in Egypt. We do this with the telling of the Passover story, with our actions at the Seder table and with the traditions that surround the preparations for the Seder. We remove all the chametz (leavened bread) from our homes, we scrub from top to bottom, we change our dishes, and we mentally prepare for the week that is to come. (this year Passover begins the evening of April 19). These actions reflect the story in the Torah of the Hebrews’ preparations for the very first Seder before they were actually free. Passover, or Pesach, is as much about looking forward to what we have faith will happen, as it is about looking back on what has already happened. It is about believing that even if something has not occurred yet, if we believe it will, and if we can visualize it and then act toward making it so, then it is much more likely to become reality. As Theodor Hertzl said, “Im Tirtzu Ein Zo Agada—If you will it, it is no dream” This interpretation of Passover truly reflects so much of what we do here at the Alpert Jewish Community Center. At our J we come together to learn, exercise, volunteer and participate in many programs and events. We do this, because we look toward the future and what is possible for ourselves, possible for our children, and possible for the community. At the Passover Seder, four questions are asked. These questions provide the impetus for telling why this night is different from all other nights. This Passover, in addition to the four traditional questions, take some time to ask yourself these four questions on what you can do differently in the coming year. • What can I do to make myself a better person? • What can I do to help someone else achieve his or her goals? • What can I do to make my community stronger? • What can I do to make the life of someone in need a little better? I hope you will have time this Passover to take a moment to reflect on those questions, and not just think about the answer, but ways to make those answers come to fruition. I look forward to the J being the place where you can enrich and enhance yourself through participation in our fitness and aquatics center, or the myriad of programs and classes we offer; or where you can help others and make our community stronger by volunteering at the J or with our new JCC Cares group. The J is here to help you answer those questions. Thank you for making the J a place to help better yourself, to help others, to make our community strong, and a place where your dreams become reality. It is with all of you, and everything you do here, that make the AJCC, Your Center for Life!

This comprehensive exhibit showcases a selection of historical moments that embody the great endeavor that was the establishment of the State of Israel as seen through the eyes of its people. Highlighted within are the experiences of Jews from around the world who escaped hatred and fear to live freely in a Jewish state. Depicted are primarily new citizens who made Aliyah (immigrated to Israel; literally “ascended”) to the young country. Their struggles and triumphs evidence how these immigrants overcame the challenges of running a new state with few resources.

Volunteers will pack and deliver Passover holiday baskets to skilled nursing facilities and homebound seniors. If you can drive or pack, please consider volunteering on this special day. For more info, call Dr. Susan Mathieu at (562) 426-7601 x 1721

IS MENTAL HEALTH IMPORTANT? Join us on May 5 at Race With A View!

Race With A View 2019 is just a few weeks away, and with it, the month of May is recognized by Mental Health America as National Mental Health Awareness Month. What better way could there be than to show your support for the importance of access to

the professional, affordable, mental health counseling and social services provided by JFCS than to participate in Race With A View? The beautiful downtown shoreline is a stunning backdrop for a 5k/10k run or walk with friends and loved ones.

This year’s event will have the added importance of remembering the legacy of Edith Zamost, aunt of Marvin, Barry, and Betty Zamost and mother of their cousin Marian Stern who will be coming from New York to participate in the event. Edith was truly a renaissance woman—a musical prodigy, a prime mover for the establishment of Hadassah in the U.S., and a totally devoted wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother. In addition to the stunning waterfront setting, KROQ will be “in the house” again this year to fill the air with energizing music as a prelude to the festivities at the starting line. Fox 11 News morning anchor, Elex

Michaelson, will be on hand as our emcee, breaking news notwithstanding, while Jaime Gonzalez will lead our prerace stretching. Runners and walkers will enjoy the mellow tunes of the Jazz Angels as they stroll or jog past the Nautilus band shell area on Rainbow Lagoon. Lazy Acres will be at the finish line with healthy fruit and water for all participants. New this year, all who participate in Race With A View will be eligible to continue in the Long Beach Charity 5K/10K Series. JFCS is partnering with U.S. Vets – Long Beach and Meals on Wheels Long Beach to offer a special commemorative medal to those who participate in

each organizations 5K or 10K event. U.S. Vets – Long Beach’s Storm the Beach is scheduled for Saturday, June 15, while Meals on Wheels Long Beach’s 5K and 10K is slated for July 13. More details are available at www.racewithaview.com, or call (562) 439-5000. Now, more than ever, we need you! Join us either as a walker, runner, or volunteer on race day. Visit racewithaview.com and sign up for whatever speaks to your soul. We hope to see you there, letting your friends and family know where you stand on the important issue of mental health services for everyone in the community. The Hebrew Academy Celebrates 50 Years of Excellence

(l-r): Alan Goldstone, Amit Weinberg, and Loren Kaiser are elementary school friends from when they attended The Hebrew Academy together.

On Sunday, March 10th at the magnificent Four Seasons Hotel located in Beverly Hills, The Hebrew Academy hosted its annual

Visionary Dinner. During the event, several very special people were honored. They are Don and Andrea Kaiser, who received the Leadership

community. The enjoyable evening was again hosted by television personality Elon Gold with a special guest entertainer Alonzo Bodden. The Visionary Dinner is the Hebrew Academy’s signature fundraising event and this year the Academy celebrated 50 years of service to the Jewish community. The event (l-r): Rabbi Yitzchok Newman (Dean of The Hebrew Academy), Don & Andrea Kaiser, and Dr. Bryn Harari (Principal of The Hebrew Academy) raises scholarship funds for the Hebrew Academy’s in Education award. Also, first class of the school which programs that serve over honored were Miriam Istrin started at the Alpert JCC a thousand youngsters and Richard Wolpow, two 50 years ago, received the annually. of the Hebrew Academy’s Young Leadership Award for alumni who represented the their accomplishments in the

As a result, our students consistently score in the highest percentiles nationally in normed assessments. Read Across America is a nationwide reading program that celebrates the beloved Dr. Seuss’ birthday. On March 1st this year, The Hebrew Academy kicked off a month long reading and writing challenge in his honor. Students were engaged and challenged in reading and writing activities, such as reading to a younger or older sibling, pledging to read additional minutes per week, and writing their own Seuss-ical story. Additionally, students set their own reading

and writing goals that encouraged them to (Dr. Seuss). Dr. Seuss’ later work focused heavily on kindness, fairness, and ecology. While these are core values at The Hebrew Academy all year long, this month we went out of our way to observe, recognize, and honor those qualities in our students by having their families participate in completing special “family challenges” at their homes, including reading together, having conversations about kindness and fairness, and sharing about their practices

at home that help cultivate these values. According to Lisa Lopez, Curriculum Specialist at The Hebrew Academy, “The importance of reading and writing goes beyond the enjoyment of understanding and sharing stories. Literacy and writing skills help students improve their academics, communication skills, grow logical, critical thinking skills, and most importantly encourages their imagination and innovation!” Like Dr. Seuss, the Hebrew Academy is committed to supporting our generations of scholars, leaders, and innovators
