During natural disasters and humanitarian crises, we’re often the first on the ground providing aid, comfort and support. Haiti Earthquake: $4.8 million/2010. Donations from Federation donors were sent to Haiti through JDC, American Jewish World Service, and IsraAid, and used to fund critical supplies used by the Israeli army field hospital. Japan Earthquake: $1 million/2011. Donors turned to Federation as soon as they heard about the devastation. Our overseas partner JDC joined forces with the Israeli army to open a field hospital. And we continue to provide counseling to victims. Hurricanes & Tornadoes: 2011/2012. We helped get medical care to victims and are providing ongoing recovery assistance.

other. The Jewish Community Partnership is dedicated to strengthening this connection. Every day, the Alpert Jewish Community Center brightens the lives of nearly 300 students in the Early Childhood Education program. Every day, Jewish Family and Children’s Service supports clients as they struggle through life’s challenges. Every day, Long Beach Hillel strengthens the Jewish identity of college students across southern California. And every day, the Hebrew Academy brightens the lives of students through Judaic and secular studies. The Jewish Federation Annual Campaign funds community Purim and Chanukah celebrations at the Alpert JCC as well as Sukkot and Lag B’Omer Celebrations at the Hebrew Academy. The Annual Campaign also helps fund scholarships for the Talit Program, training the next generation of Jewish leaders, at the Bureau of Jewish Education. Caring for the needy Every day, the Federation supports programs that feed, clothe, shelter, counsel and rescue thousands of people here in the Greater Long Beach area, in Israel and around the world. It’s our responsibility. It’s our privilege. It’s who we are. The Jewish Federation Annual Campaign supports Senior Adult Nutrition programs at the Alpert JCC, Young Adult programs through Gesher City and helps JFCS support those economically and emotionally vulnerable.

Walk to End Genocide By Rabbi Nancy Myers
We are just concluding the holiday of Passover where we celebrate the liberation of our people out of bondage. As Jews, our memory as slaves impels us to care for others. In Deuteronomy 16, we are told to rejoice before God with the stranger, orphan, and widow because “You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt; and you shall observe and do these statutes.” It is because we remember the brutality of Pharaoh’s taskmasters and what it’s like to suffer, that we are eth-
ically compelled to speak out and help save others from violence. As we recall the strong leadership of Moses, Miriam, and Aaron, I ask you to consider the importance of Jewish voices in not only helping our people, but also, of those half-aworld away. Even though news coverage can be sporadic, there is still so much suffering in Sudan, Congo, and other parts of Africa. Too many innocent men, women, and children face innumerable challenges. Women are still being raped, children’s edu-
cation is languishing, and people are suffering long lasting physical and psychological trauma. Jewish World Watch, through its annual Walk to End Genocide, is raising funds to provide safe protected places, medical treatment, education, and job opportunities for the survivors of war. This year the Orange County/Greater Long Beach walk will be on Sunday, April 21, 2013 beginning at 9:00 am at Fountain Valley Park, Great Lawn at 16400 Brookhurst in Fountain Valley.

Dr. Medoff is founding director of The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies and is the author of seven books about the Holocaust, Zionism, and the history of American Jewry. He has taught Jewish history at several colleges throughout the U.S. He has collaborated with comic book artists including Art Spiegelman on political cartoons and graphic novels. In 2010, Medoff and comics creator Neal Adams teamed with Disney to produce They Spoke Out: American Voices Against the Holocaust, an online educational motion comics series that tells stories of Americans who either protested Nazis or helped rescue Jews during the Holocaust. Dr. Medoff will be speaking about "FDR, the Press, and the Holocaust". You will be able to purchase his new book, FDR and the Holocaust: A Breach of Faith, which includes surprising new information about President Roosevelt's private views of Jews, and the issue of the Allies' failure to bomb Auschwitz. The service will conclude with a remembrance of local survivor and philanthropist Eugene Schlesinger.

Cycling for Alisa Beit Issie Shapiro is a very special place for very special kids. Located in Ra’anana, Israel, this non-profit community organization provides a wide range of services for over 30,000 children with developmental disabilities and their families. The Alpert JCC’s Early Childhood Education Department is sponsoring Alisa, a young Israeli girl with special needs, in our Cycle for Smiles fundraiser on April 25. During this event, our children in ECE will ride their tricycles to support their new friend, Alisa, by raising money for Beit Issie Shapiro. In the process, they will be learning about kids with special needs and how each one of us can make a difference in someone’s life. At the same time, many of our adult members will participate in a Spinning for Smiles Spin-A-Thon, also supporting Alisa and Beit Issie Shapiro.

Cartoonists Against the Holocaust The CSULB Jewish Studies Program, in partnership with the History/Social Dr. Rafael Medoff Sciences Project and the Eva & Eugene Schlesinger Endowed Teacher Workshop on the Holocaust, is pleased to present a special talk by Dr. Rafael Medoff on Monday, April 8, from 4 to 6 pm, at the Alpert JCC. Dr. Medoff will lead a peda-
gogically oriented workshop entitled “Cartoonists Against the Holocaust: A New Way to Teach About the Nazi Genocide – And America’s Response.” His talk will revolve around his current project, which involves using editorial cartoons printed in the 1930s and ‘40s as a means of teaching the Holocaust. In addition to Dr. Medoff’s talk, there will be an exhibition of the works of Arthur Szyk at
the Alpert JCC. A Polish-born Jewish artist who escaped to the United States, Szyk produced numerous drawings during the war in an effort to raise awareness of the ongoing Holocaust. Training Our Future Leaders Building strong student leaders is one of Beach Hillel’s many goals. We want to provide students with the tools and opportunities to become leaders on their campus and in the community. In past years, student leadership was found in the form of a student board where students ran for and held standard positions. This semester, Beach Hillel took a different approach to our student’s leadership program. Six students were selected based on their involvement and potential leadership qualities. They meet weekly for 10 weeks and learn the different aspects of leadership, relationship building, and programming. In each session, students experience a combination of an ice breaker, Jewish content piece, and a core lesson/activity. During this time, they have a chance to interact, learn, and have a hands-on experience. The use of multiple elements keep students engaged and participating. The program itself is split into two different content areas. The first area of focus is what makes a strong leader.

Students will be analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, learning to build relationships, understanding the importance of communication and teamwork. For the second half of the program, students will be learning how to create creative and engaging programs. Students will learn planning, budgeting, marketing, and will then be creating their own program. The goal of our program is to enhance the leadership skills of our students in both engagement and programming work. By the end of the semester, students will have built relationships with those in the group and other students on campus. Beach Hillel believes in investing in our students so they can invest in their community.

Middle School Scholars Prepare for a Debate

rrrrThis week, the 6th grade middle school students are participating in a mini-debate about the state of the Great Lakes. As part of our unit in Geography, they have been researching the importance of the Great Lakes as a freshwater resource for the United States, and the effect of pollutants, habitat-loss, and invasive species. In addition to needing
the information to back up their opinions, the students have been preparing for public speaking. Nels Carlson, who is a General Contractor and business owner and Tim Mauer, who has a Master’s degree in Communication Studies and teaches public speaking at Cal State Long Beach, came to speak to the class. Both presenters gave great advice to the students
Town Hall Meetings
Town Hall meetings at the Academy are a highlight of the month for students and parents alike. We invite the community and perspective parents to see what all the excitement is about. Every other Wednesday, our whole student body comes together as a school and share happenings in the school and honor scholarly pursuits. Many goals are achieved by this short (15 minutes a meeting), yet impactful gathering. First and foremost, our students gain the experi-

ence of gathering together as a community in a way that is organized, focused and disciplined. A word that we use a lot to describe the participants’ behavior is, “decorum.” The classes gather together quietly and they are prepared to participate in a grown-up and effective manner. Additionally, our entire community has a chance to hear from our Student Body President about all the important events and achievements that are occurring at the school or by individual students. Finally, we end the meeting with what we call, “Special and Wonderful Awards.” These awards are better than any paper certificate that can be won. They are given from one student or teacher
about how to communicate effectively when speaking in front of a group of people, such as how to build confidence in yourself, know your material, and that the people you are speaking to want you to succeed. The most important piece of advice: practice, practice, practice! The students are on their way to being well prepared for a great debate.

SGI – Safe, Fun, Jewish Silver Gan Israel (SGI) Day Camp is proud to announce that your kids will be even safer this summer with the construction of two new sun shielding structures. Both of our swimming pools and our new kids play structure are now covered. “Living in this beautiful climate with over 300 days of sun is amazing, but sometimes we forget what the Southern California sun could do,” said Sender Engel, the camp director. “Couple that with an hour in the pool every day, when even the best sunscreen can get washed off, and we’ve got a safety issue. Installing a tent large enough to house just our Jr. Olympic size pool took a team of 9 with four tractors more than 2 weeks to complete, but the results are well worth it.” The pools and play structures are only the beginning
of the fun your kids can have at SGI. Onsite laser tag, hay maze, human hamster balling, the imagination room, age appropriate field trips, sports and so much more are also in store for them. Parents will be happy to know that their children are in a safe environment and will come home daily with new lessons, friends, skills and spirited camp songs. Playground Grand Opening on Purim The ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly refurbished playground equipment was celebrated on Purim this year. Through the generous donations of many attendees at The Hebrew Academy’s 2012 Auction Royale, the school garnered funds to purchase new play equipment and redo the south playground layout. The younger students are the direct beneficiaries of this new play area,
