OTZMA has been referred to as one of the Federation Movement’s jewels, and best kept secret. Conducted in cooperation with the Jewish Agency for Israel's Department for Jewish Zionist Education, OTZMA (Hebrew for "strength”) gives young Jews the opportunity to play integral roles in Israeli society for 10 months. OTZMA, is a 10-month volunteer program for Jewish young adults, ages 20-30. Participants spend three months learning Hebrew, three months volunteering in small communities based on their interests and the needs of the communities, and three months participating in a professional internship or kibbutz volunteer experience. For three months, OTZMAniks live, volunteer and study Hebrew in an absorption center in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon. Then they volunteer in Partnership 2000 communities, working in Federationfunded programs that meet critical social needs. Partnership 2000 is the program that partners Federations with specific local communities in Israel to bring the communities together. Finally, OTZMAniks intern in non-profit organizations or volunteer on kibbutzim. For those especially interested in supporting English education, OTZMA’s Israel Teaching Fellows Track allow participants the opportunity to volunteer in the Israeli school system teaching English. The Israel Teacher Corp has been compared to Teach for
OTZMA participant working with an Israeli student in his community’s partnership region
America in that the participants spend the whole year in the same school teaching the students. This makes this track slightly different from the other OTZMA tracks. More than 1,400 young adults from Jewish communities in North America have become OTZMAniks since the program’s inception in 1986, working in afterschool programs with Israeli students, teaching English, helping the disabled and much more. “As one of the first Jewish Service Learning programs, OTZMA has had great success in developing committed Jews, Zionists, and future leaders of the North American Jewish community,” said OTZMA’s North American Director, Tali Ruderman Strom. OTZMA is an experience of a lifetime; participants of the program develop leadership qualities, travel the country, and gain a deep understanding of Israel. “I think OTZMA is a great way to grow as a person and to learn more about my people, our religion, heritage, culture, and community," said Alex Kadis, a participant from Cleveland, Ohio. If you are looking for information, or know of someone you think would enjoy this program, please be in touch at ashabtay@jewishlongbeach.org or go to the website at www.otzma.org.

Are You A Secret Member of the Living Legacy Society? Here are some examples of how you might create a charitable bequest in your will or trust: Help the Jewish community address its most pressing current needs by making a general bequest: I bequeath $________ (or _______% of my residuary estate) to the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County. Support a specific agency or cause of interest to you every year, in perpetuity, with a designated bequest to establish an endowment fund: I bequeath $_________ (or_______% of my residuary estate) to the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County, to establish an endowment fund to support (named program(s) or organization(s) of your choice).
Jewish Community Foundation says thank you, thank you, thank you….We can never say “thank you” enough to all of our community members who make Jewish life possible through their continued support of our Jewish agencies, schools and synagogues. However, we need to ask you another question. Have you protected your lifelong investment in our Jewish community by including a gift to the Jewish community in your will? If you have, then you are already a member of the Living Legacy Society and your name can be inscribed on the Foundation Donor Wall with others who have taken the steps to Create a Jewish Legacy. Including a gift in your will through the Jewish Community Foundation is an easy and effective way to provide for the next generation and ensure that our Jewish community remains vibrant. To become a member of the Legacy Society and be inscribed on the Foundation Donor Wall you need to sign a “Letter of Intent” that you intend to leave a legacy through the Jewish Community Foundation. There are several ways to
leave a bequest: 1) You can leave a charitable bequest in your will 2) You can establish a permanent fund in your name through a bequest or as part of your estate plan 3) You can create a life income plan for a loved one with the remainder left to your Fund. An outright bequest in a will can be made with cash, securities or other property. Your taxable estate will be reduced by the amount of your contribution. Everyone regardless of their income level can participate by leaving a percentage of their estate to an Endowment Fund When you choose to leave a bequest of a specific amount of cash, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate through the Jewish Community Foundation for the
benefit of a cause or organization of your choice, you create a permanent legacy that will benefit the community for generations to come. There’s no limit to the amount you may set aside from your estate. If you have already drafted your will of trust, your attorney can arrange a bequest with a simple amendment or codicil. By making a legacy gift through the Jewish Community Foundation during your lifetime or through your will, you will strengthen the vitality of present and future generations of Jews here at home and overseas. Please let us know if you are already a member of the Legacy Society or if you want more information about how to Create a Jewish Legacy by calling Sharon at 562-426-7601 EXT. 1008.
These examples are meant as suggestions. The staff of the Jewish Community Foundation would be happy to speak with you or your financial/legal advisor to develop language that reflects your specific objectives.

The Women’s Weekend Experience When it came time for my first Women’s Weekend experience, I must admit that I was really hesitant and excited at the same time. I did not know what to expect. I knew that a bunch of women of all different ages were going to be coming together to celebrate being Jewish. I had to stop and think, what exactly did that mean for me? I honestly did not have an answer, but I hoped to have one at the end of the weekend though. When I got there, I could not believe my eyes. All these women were together, just hanging out, talking, it was a beautiful sight. I was still a little nervous because I did not know what to expect, but I went over and joined in. My experience that weekend changed my outlook on Judaism and my spirituality. I spent the entire weekend surrounded by a wonderful group of women who did not judge your level of Judaism or spirituality, in fact they just embraced the fact that you were there. The relationships and bonds that form from the weekend are ones that are only strengthened every time there is another weekend. Being in nature and being able to be in tune with who you are is just another added benefit of the Women’s Weekend. I love the fact that even though I was not the most religious person there, I was still able to enjoy and participate in the religious aspects of the weekend. I felt in touch with everything that was going on. While I still did not find out the answer to my question, it only left me hungry for the answer, so every time there is a Women’s Weekend, I come back for more. Alexis Erlbaum

Preschool Tzedakah
All classes meet 1–2:30pm
Mrs. Weinberg’s Pre-Kindergarten children, at the Alpert JCC, believe in helping others. They learned this from Pirkei Avot chapter 2, mishna 5, where Hillel says: “Do not separate yourself from the community”. To them community meant their family, their neighbors where they live, their JCC friends, and the entire world.
Chaverim Connection
Last fall they brought tzedakah to support all the families involved in Heifer International, a world hunger org, and the Alpert JCC scholarship fund. For their spring tzedakah the children decided to bring it closer to home. A classmate had been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. They chose to raise money to find a cure for this disease that commonly affects young children. They deserve a rousing ‘Todah Rabah’.
Girls & Boys entering 5th-9th grade Whether you are a beginner or you have volleyball experience, this great program is just right for you. Our experienced coaches will focus on skill development, rules of the game, strategy, and sportsmanship.

The Power of Giving – A Life Well Lived
Sally and Eugene Chernoy
What makes a life welllived? For some of us, it is achieving success in business, for others it is having a rich and fulfilling family life and knowing true love, for still others it is leaving the world a better place than you found it by giving back to others. For Eugene Chernoy it has been all of these things and more.
Eugene Chernoy has been a successful business man, a loving husband and recently a man who has chosen to make a significant difference in the lives of others. He has taken steps to ensure that thousands of residents from his community will receive compassionate, affordable and life-changing social services through a
planned gift to JFCS Long Beach. Mr. Chernoy recently announced that he intends to bequeath the building that he and his loving wife and business partner Sally ran their business out of for over 40 years. Mr. Chernoy’s generosity is inspiring but you do not need to own a building to make a powerful difference in your community. How do you plan to make a difference? Some of us feel like we have nothing much to offer but the reality is each of us has something to give. Whether you give through a small donation, donate your time in service to the community, or leave behind a powerful legacy such as Mr. Chernoy’s, we all feel better about ourselves when we take care of one another. Maimonides, a preeminent medieval Jewish philosopher, says that the highest form of
tzedakah is to give a gift, loan, or partnership that will result in the recipient supporting himself instead of living upon others. With this gift, Mr. Chernoy has ensured that people in his community will receive not just charity or a hand-out, but the skilled services, information and support that allow JFCS clients to truly take charge of their own lives and move towards greater happiness and self-sufficiency. It is with great honor and pride that JFCS salutes Eugene Chernoy and his wife Sally for lives well-lived. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the powerful legacy of love they leave for us all. We hope their generosity inspires you too to make a difference. For information on how you too can make a planned gift to JFCS, please feel free to contact us at 562-427-7916, EXT. 235.
lects his own inner personal needs for support Let’s face it, caring and honest support is necessary when men are experiencing changes, stress, grief and other issues in their lives. What men need to meet these challenges is a support system that is strong and loving. They also need to learn to give up the notion of “going it alone.” Most men report they are much happier and more successful when they are better connected to themselves, their bodies, their lovers and friends, their children and each other. More and more men are realizing that the messages they were given about a man handling things on their own are outmoded, unrealistic and frankly unhealthy. Rabbi Nancy Myers
Is fifty years old? Well, I imagine the answer to that question depends on who we are asking. For those who have reached five decades, most would say that even though their bodies remind them they are no longer thirty, they do not feel old. They feel that they have a lot to look forward to. There are always new adventures, kids are growing up, and new challenges lay ahead. However, if we were to ask a thirteen year old, is fifty old, we would likely get a different answer. For children and teenagers, old begins, well, rather young. For a teen eagerly awaiting driving and moving out on their own, turning twenty might indeed seem old. Whether fifty is old certainly is subjective to one’s own age and stage of life. If fifty is significant age for an individual, how about for an
institution? Is fifty years old for a synagogue? Now on the east coast where synagogues have been around for hundreds of years, perhaps not. But on the west coast where the Jewish community settled in more recent history, it is indeed a different story. I am pondering this because my synagogue, Temple Beth David in Westminster, is now celebrating its fifty years of services, life cycles, friendships, holidays, and more. Five decades of Jewish living feels like an accomplishment especially in Orange County. I marvel at the Jews who came together and willingly mortgaged their homes to build and create Temple Beth David. Looking back 50 years is rather amazing. Whether one believes that fifty years is old for a synagogue, it certainly is worthy of commemorating. In the Torah, fifty is signifi-
cant number. In Leviticus, chapter 25, we read how the horn was sounded after forty nine years proclaiming the Jubilee on our Day of Atonement. We are told to kidashtem, to sanctify, the fiftieth year and proclaim a release throughout the land. In the days of our Torah, land returned to its original tribal holdings, the land was left untilled, and Israelite slaves were freed. The fiftieth year was proclaimed and celebrated by the people throughout the land of Israel. It reminded the Israelites that people and land ultimately belong to God. So the number fifty in our Torah is a reminder of holiness, sanctity, freedom, rest, and God. For us as individuals, five decades is old enough to appreciate the sanctity of life, i.e., we don’t take it for granted any longer, we can dream of the freedom of future retirement,
and we can focus on the relationships Rabbi Nancy Myers in our lives that are most important. For a synagogue such as Temple Beth David, fifty years gives us perspective. We have lived and survived over half a century but we have created decades of friendships, a place of prayer and study, and a community that can support one another and celebrate the great joys of our lives. Fifty years for us is an opportunity of connecting with history and creating more moments of holiness. Perhaps we should sound the horn as we acknowledge that fifty years perhaps isn’t so old because we have much more to look forward to. Here’s to the next fifty! Rabbi Nancy Myers is rabbi at Temple Beth David in Westminster.

What’s new at the Hebrew Academy Middle School?
Art Masters for the year 2011/2012
By Megan M. Carlson, Ed.D. It is with great pride and pleasure that I share with you the good news of a strong Hebrew Academy program focused on the needs and interests of our middle school students. We strive to offer an academic program that challenges every young mind to stretch and analyze his/her world using the strong foundation of learning strategies and knowledge he and she gain at the H.A. We have hired great teachers who are focused on middle school. We scheduled classes in a way that gives opportunities for integration and application of concepts. By virtue of hiring middle school teachers who will be teaching two subjects, we have made it a priority to integrate humanities (English and social studies) and math/science because we know that adolescents learn best if they have more subjects integrated and connected. We planned and implemented fun and educational co-curricular activities, including Middle School student council this year. We hope that many students will run for office, or get involved in some manner or another. Student Council will be responsible for Town Hall meetings, community interactions, the Spelling/Geography Bees, and much more. We are in the planning stages of running girls’ and boys’ basketball leagues here at the H. A. The Judaic and General Studies programs are well-integrated and supportive of each other. We are working on enhanced integration of our amazing technology into the middle school curriculum and instruction. The H. A. is advanced in the technology that we have available to our students and teachers. All classrooms have SmartBoards, through which teachers can bring in online, interactive lessons and streaming video. There is no limit to the possibilities set forth with this technol-
ogy. We scheduled exciting electives and fun Judaic activities for the middle school students (and their families). The H. A. middle schoolers will get to have art classes, PE, and debate. All these classes take place during the school day and enhance the middle school students’ education and well-prepare them for their upper school experiences. Attending the Shabbat dinners and community-wide Shabbatons are truly some of the best ways for your family to enjoy the H. A. together. These events provide a great opportunity for you to socialize with your middle school child, who, by virtue of his/her stage in life, often, will try to avoid being with his/her parents. We are enhancing the physical environment of the H. A. The new Value Circle will be a community gathering spot for all. Town Hall meetings, conducted by our middle school students, will occur in this beautiful spot. They will gain a ton of leadership opportunities through setting up and using the space. We are working hard this summer to enhance the classrooms for the middle/upper school boys and girls. This is still a work in progress. As I hope you gather, our middle school program is gaining tremendous amounts of thought, attention and resources its way. We are sure that all this energy will bring programs and instruction to the H. A. that will, in turn, give your middle schooler the education of a lifetime, one that will prepare him or her for whatever secondary and life-long choices he/she makes in his/her future. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to educate your child. We look forward to many exciting experiences with you and your children. CSULB-Teacher Workshop on the Holocaust The Teacher Workshop on the Holocaust returns for its second visit to the Karl Anatol Center on the CSULB campus in August 2011, with the goal of training teachers in the local school systems in ways to teach about the Nazi genocide. “This workshop will bring high school teachers on campus for curriculum development workshops that will enable them to teach students about the Holocaust in an age-appropriate way,” explained History’s Jeffrey Blutinger, the inaugural Barbara and Ray Alpert Endowed Chair for Jewish Studies and a member of the university since 2004. “Holocaust education is a state standard usually taught at the 10th and 11th grades. Part of the instruction comes in history and part in language arts. But those who instruct the Holocaust may not have taken a class in the subject. Their knowledge may be limited to whatever movies they’ve seen
or whatever world history textbook they read at the university. What we are doing is providing them information about the subject including a general overview accompanied by binder material prepared by the Anti-Defamation League titled Echoes and Reflections. We are currently raising endowment funds that will make the workshops a permanent fixture on campus.” The Jewish Studies program was approached in 2009 by Holocaust survivor Gerda Seifer and her husband Harold with the seed gift that created the Teacher Workshop, Blutinger explained. “There’s nothing like it available in Southern California,” he said. “It was a chance to fill a major need. I thought it was a terrific idea. It gives Jewish Studies at CSULB a chance to increase our visibility and help us to make a name for ourselves in Los Angeles and Orange County.” The workshop will begin
with a CSULB faculty-led review of the genocide and an introduction to the program’s theme, Art and the Holocaust. “This year, the topic will be explored in two perspectives,” said Blutinger. “We will examine art as perpetrator of the Holocaust and art as resistance. We will study the theory of art and propaganda within a totalitarian system. We will look at film as a tool in the killing process and the creation of Nazi films that advocated genocide. Then we will switch gears to look at art created by victims as a way of resisting Nazis.” The workshop will include a visit to the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. Blutinger feels the workshop fits into the mission of Jewish Studies at CSULB by moving the program more and more into the field of teacher preparation and education. “This workshop works well with one of CSULB’s core missions, to prepare teachers,” he said.
