PJ Library comes to Long Beach
By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments and Community Development
T
he Long Beach Jewish Community is thrilled to announce the launch of PJ LIBRARY (PJ, as in pajamas), a program that provides families raising Jewish children with a FREE treasury of Jewish books and music! Every month, families enrolled in PJ LIBRARY will receive a high-quality, expert-selected and kid-tested Jewish book or CD as a gift from the community. Through the generosity of the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County, Temple Israel, and the Alpert Jewish Community Center and with support from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, Jewish Long Beach is making 264 subscriptions available on a first-come, first-served basis to families with children, 6 months through 6 years old, who live in the Greater Long Beach and West Orange Country area.
__________________________ “…a chance for parents and children to read and learn together with stories that promote our Jewish traditions…”
__________________________
PJ Library began in 2005 when Harold Grinspoon, a Massachusetts real estate businessman, began collaborating with local donors to send free, age-appropriate children’s books to Jewish families. Children enrolled in the program get a book, CD or DVD, along with reading guides, conversation starters and suggestions for activities. The monthly packages come addressed to the child, a source of pride and excitement for those who receive them, but are intended to engage the en-
tire family. More than 3 million books have been donated since the program began and another 100,000 more go out each month to children and families in more than 175 communities in North America. The Grinspoon Foundation sponsors the first mailing of one book to our entire community mailing list. Many of our Chronicle readers should receive a packet. This mailing is designed to spread the word about the program. If you do not have an age appropriate child to give the book to, please give the packet to friends and neighbors so that they can enroll and share in the PJ experience. The sponsoring agencies will also be happy to re-distribute the book for you.

Good Stories, positive messages, kid-friendly programs eeeDeborah Goldfarb, Executive Director of the Jewish Federation, states, “Across the country we know that parents say few events rival the arrival of PJ books in their mailboxes. The Federation is pleased to help our community provide this experience by facilitating the website, e-news, registration and coordination of PJ programs.” eeeIn addition to helping provide books, the sponsoring groups will be hosting various programs in conjunction with PJ Library, which will be open to all PJ families. eeeSharon Amster-Brown, educator at Temple Israel, remarks, “Temple Israel is thrilled to be part of the group helping to bring PJ Library to the Jewish community in Long Beach. We know that there are so many young Jewish families in this area, and we look forward to being part of their Jewish educational experience, both in the home and throughout the community. Please be on the lookout for dates and further information about these fun, kidfriendly happenings!” “Amid our rapidly-changing society, the art of sitting quietly with children to turn the pages of brightly-illustrated books is often eclipsed by digital distractions,” said Susan Paletz, Director of Program Development and Community Engagement at the Alpert JCC, one of the community sponsors, “It is wonderful to offer a chance for parents and children to read and learn together with stories that promote our Jewish traditions.” For more information, contact Sharon Kenigsberg at 562-426-7601 EXT 1008 or sharonk@jewishlongbeach.org or visit www.pjlibrary.org.

Preparing for 2012 Year-End Planning By MikeVan Dyke, Certified Financial Planner
Mike Van Dyke, CIMA®, CFP®, ChFC® Vice President, Wealth Management THE SHADDEN GROUP
eeeWith the election behind us and the fiscal cliff in front of us, it’s not too late or too early to review your year-end tax planning and charitable giving strategies to minimize potential tax implications based on your individual circumstances. Although changes to tax rates in year 2013 is still a question mark, changes to the tax structure for the current tax year has already taken place here in California. At the state level, with the passing of proposition 30, the current highest state income tax rates go from 9.3% Your legacy lives on
F REVER
all the way up to 13.3% for the top bracket, retroactive for the current tax year (2012). Making a cash charitable contribution will help offset state and federal income tax and minimize the impact. Taking this strategy a step further is to gift appreciated assets such as stock, instead of cash, thus getting a full deduction for the market value of your gift while avoiding potentially higher capital gains tax rates in future years. At our national level in Washington, the tax discussion is taking place on what and how to balance the budget. While the tax brackets and rates are uncertain, we can be certain that rates will rise at some point to begin the process of reducing our national debt. The IRS does allow today for IRA conversions into Roth IRA’s, which simply entails paying the tax today on the conversion amount so you avoid paying taxes in the future at potentially higher rates. Coupling a Roth conversion with a charitable gift to offset the taxes today, will help set you up to potentially
minimize your tax liability in the future. If you are considering a charitable gift this year, the Jewish Community Foundation is here to help you reach your charitable goals. Each family and financial situation is unique. The staff at the Jewish Community Foundation is ready to help you start the conversation, understand your choices, and find the right philanthropic path for you and your family. reflections
The Lesson of Chanukah By Rabbi Mark Goldfarb
The surrounding culture was proving to be too attractive to the small minority - being Jewish was no longer advantageous, if anything it was a hindrance. The culture the Jews found themselves in offered so much intellectually, culturally, and socially. However, there was one major drawback. To take advantage of the offerings of this culture, the Jews would have to give up Judaism. Many of them did. Many changed their names. Joshua became Jason. Many converted, adopting the ways of their “non-Jewish” neighbors. Many chose cosmetic surgery, even at the price of great pain, to hide their Judaism. Many Jews adopted the dress, manners and ways of those who lived around them. Many even substituted the capricious ideas and examples of the popular culture for the eternal teachings of the Torah. Many were choosing spouses from among the people around them and failing to pass on their Judaism to their children. My friends, I am not writing about the assimilation trends of the Jews of the 21st century, nor about the Jews
of the Middle Ages. The trends I write about come to us from the 2nd century before the Common Era (BCE). The land of Israel, once part of the Greek Empire under Alexander, was now part of the territory controlled by Assyria, and the “oh so attractive” culture was Hellenism. Many Jews during this time went through great trouble, and great pain, to appear Greek and Greek-like. They adopted many of the Greek traditions, even replacing the sacrificial system practiced in The Temple with Greek-style offerings, rituals and practice. The tyrant ruler Antiochus would have himself, not only as ruler of the Jews, but as “the God of the Jews.” When his soldiers entered the village of Modi’in and tried to force a Jew to sacrifice to a statue, this was the last straw. A small band of Jews took on the mighty Assyrians in a war over religious freedom and monotheism. However, there was more to the revolt than simply religious freedoms. The Maccabee’s were fighting against the greatest threat to Judaism - ASSIMILATION. Now, as then, there
are Jews who wish to hide their Judaism, who see in the religion of our ancestors not a means of enrichment, but burdensome baggage. There are those who have given up the prophetic values of Judaism (social justice, responsibility, ethical monotheism) and have adopted the ways of the surrounding culture (accepting the status quo, “passing the buck,” excessive materialism). Over two thousand years ago, a small group of Jews stood up to an empire. It began with one family and spread until many recognized just how close Judaism was to disappearing. Imagine how different the world would be today if Judaism had ceased in 165 BCE. The Jewish heroes, Akiva, Bar Kochba, Hillel and Shammai would not have been. The Roman Empire would not have come into control of the Middle East when it did. No Talmudic thought or reasoning, no Maimonidies, perhaps no Freud, and no Einstein. Later this month, many will gather in their homes to celebrate Chanukah. This year, why not make some-
thing more of Chanukah? Invite some of your friends, your children’s friends, to Rabbi Mark join you for Goldfarb a night of Chanukah. Send cards, greetings, FaceTime, video Skype, or call friends and family. As a family, instead of giving gifts to each other, give tzedakah to a selected organization on one of the nights. Sharing the joy and beauty of Chanukah with our neighbors, our family and friends, giving to organizations that help those in need, like the Jewish Federation, these are some positive ways of celebrating Chanukah. Two thousand years later, the descendants of the Maccabees continue to light the lights of Chanukah. Judaism continues to flourish, grow and develop. May the light of our Chanukiyot inspire us. May the richness and beauty of our heritage glow in our homes, temples, synagogues and, most importantly, in our hearts. Rabbi Mark Goldfarb is Rabbi at Temple Beth Ohr in La Mirada.

Nights of Lights eeeThe month of December brings the Festival of Lights, Chanukah. During this holiday we celebrate the miracle that occurred when a small amount of oil kept the menorah lit for eight nights. This year, Beach Hillel found several ways to celebrate these special days. It all started with our annual Monster Menorah contest where students were able to create or decorate their own menorahs. In past years we’ve had menorahs carved from wood, beach themed menorahs made from seashells and coral, one even made from challah. We enjoy seeing the creative menorahs that students come up with for this contest. It’s a fun way to get students from all over campus to participate. Similar to other Jewish
Danielle McKellop poses in front of her menorah during Monster Menorah
holidays there are special foods eaten on Chanukah. It’s a minhag (custom) to eat fried food representing the oil of the menorah. Foods that are eaten on this holiday include fried potato latkes (pancakes) and sufganiyot (donuts). What better way for students to learn the customs than to make the food themselves. Students had the chance to try different fried recipes and tasty creations. They enjoyed getting together and
eating some holiday treats. eeeThe last event was a dreidel tournament. Students were invited to light the menorah, eat some holiday food, and play dreidel. Whoever spun gimmel the most or collected the most gelt won a gift certificate. For many of us growing up, Chanukah was a time to spend with family and receive gifts, but for many children out there that isn’t the case. Beach Hillel wanted students to make a child’s holiday brighter, so in order to play or attend this event, students were encouraged to bring a present. These gifts were then donated to Miller Children’s Hospital. Overall, the students enjoyed the different events, learned about the holiday, and gave back to the community.
Studying and Sweets
Danielle Protas, Shea Silver-Hillinger & Candice LeBowitz studying for finals with Beach Hillel
eeeFinal projects, papers, and tests are all part of the college experience; having them all happen at the same time, however, can be extra stressful. During finals week, Beach Hillel opened up their office in the University Interfaith Center at CSULB until 2 am for a night of sweets and studying. We gave students a place to study with their friends and energy snacks
Alpert JCC Increases Net Assets for the 8th Consecutive Year
Stephen Gordon, President of the Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC), announced today that for the 8th consecutive year, the AJCC has, as a result of operational and investment success, increased its net assets. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank Executive Director Jeff Antonoff, Jeffrey Rips, Susan Paletz, Linda Keiles, Ulises Sam and the entire staff for delivering another year of
strong results,” Mr. Gordon commented. Under the guidance of Board Vice-President Andy Pieter, the AJCC has just completed its second 3-Year Strategic Plan which establishes task forces to address Resource Development, Program Development, Community Collaboration, Membership, Jewish Impact and Facilities. By relying on its Strategic Plan, the AJCC can focus on its day-to-day operations with-

Responding to member feedback, the AJCC and the Jewish Federation are also in the midst of fully renovating the 1st floor Fitness Center locker rooms, restrooms, and the Club JCC men’s locker room. The construction project also includes the addition of a room on the 2nd floor to be used for stretching and TRX workouts, as well as another room that will be converted

Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund
The northeast has been devastated by Hurricane Sandy, a powerful hurricane that has impacted millions of Americans. As Jews, we carry a responsibility to stand in the breach and help those in need in this crucial time. There are two ways you can donate to help others in need. Chabad-Lubavitch has been on the forefront providing vital assistance during this disaster. Our network of centers reaches into communities deeply impacted by the storm. Chabad Rabbis are on the ground in each community helping families and providing emergency
assistance. Lives have been disrupted; some people have even lost their homes. Jewish institutions have been damaged. We need to act in this important time. Chabad’s Jewish Hurricane Relief is helping those in need throughout the area. Join together with us as we help those in need. Visit our website and search for Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to donate with the Chabad. The Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County, in conjunction with the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), is taking donations

spective preschoolers an opportunity to see and experience the kindergarten • Show the pre-school parents the kindergarten room and teachers and that the kids will be appropriately challenged from pre-k to kindergarten • Have fun Our current kindergarteners and the prospective preschoolers get a chance to work together by moving from center to center and experience different learning
activities – from gross motor play activities, to fine motor writing and cutting games, to Judaic singing.
eeeThe Scholastic Book Fair is back from Monday, Dec. 3 – Friday, Dec. 7! Come support our students and find some good reads. There is also a special Jewish section, great for Chanukah
gifts. Students will be able to buy books during lunch and after school. In the words of Scholastic, “Read Every Day. Lead a Better Life.”
These centers are set up by the teachers and run by our teaching assistants and parent volunteers. While the children are experiencing the centers, parents get a chance to watch their children enjoy the centers and hear all about the curriculum and instruction from our teachers and administrators. Call our office to save space for you and your child.
The entire community is invited to our Chanukah celebration on Thursday, December 13. There will be fun, special activities for the children after school, dinner will be served at 5:00 pm, the Menorah lighting at 5:30 pm in our beautiful Value Circle, and music and dancing following the Menorah lighting. Come join us for this joyous time at the Hebrew Academy!
