Purim: Food, Fun and Charity By Danny Levy, Director of Development

urim is a time for us to continue the tradition of victorious celebration of a time long ago and to support one another. The Megillat Esther (The Book of Esther) prescribes “the sending of portions one man to another and gifts to the poor” (9:22). According to halakha (religious laws), each adult must give two different foods to one person, and two charitable donations to two poor people. The food parcels are called mishloach manot (“sending of portions”), and in some circles the custom has evolved into a major giftgiving event. To fulfill the mitzvah of giving charity to two poor people, one can give either food or money equivalent to the amount of food that is eaten at a regular meal. It is better to spend more on charity than on the giving of mishloach manot. 2013 Poland/Israel Trip Information Meeting Set for February 21

Remember the past, live in the present and believe in the future of our people (Abba Kovner.) Join with other community members in the trip of a lifetime. The Alpert JCC and the Jewish Federation are partnering with the Jewish Community Centers Association (JCCA) Israel Office to offer a unique trip to Poland and Israel November 3-14, 2013. Nicole & Dr. Daniel Honigman and Linda & Sanford Simmons are the community co-chairs for the trip. Nicole states, “The mission of this trip is to honor our past, enhance and enrich our connections to Israel and the Israeli people, and return ready to inspire others with what we have learned. We are looking forward to travelling with members of our own community.” In Poland, we will walk the streets of a small Jewish ghetto, visit a synagogue, visit the cities of Warsaw and Krakow and stand witness at Auschwitz and Birkenau. Susan Paletz, Alpert JCC Director of Program Development & Community Engagement, who went on a similar JCCA trip a few years ago shares, “Visiting Poland and

walking in the footsteps of those who lost their lives, was to say the least, a profoundly moving experience for me. The visit connected me to my Jewish roots in a way that cemented my pride in being Jewish and reinforced the statement, Never Again. Poland is for many Jews a mixture of darkness, sadness and hope. It was an honor to stand at Auschwitz and say Kaddish, yet it was overwhelmingly sad to think of the lives lost and the torture they endured. The hope in Poland is the beautiful city of Krakow in which they are trying to rebuild the Jewish community with its own JCC and reconnect Jews to their heritage.” On this journey, as we transition from Poland to Israel, we will have time to reflect on our experiences with special

guest speakers in Israel. We arrive in Israel in time to visit the Kotel and welcome Shabbat in Jerusalem with festive Shabbat meals and time to experience the many wonders of that city. Other highlights of the time in Israel include visiting Masada, the Dead Sea, Haifa, Tzfat, the Golan Heights and Tel Aviv. Linda Simmons, one of the mission co-chairs remarks, “It is not only the places that are spectacular, but the opportunities we have on a trip like this to visit army bases, meet with local artists, historians, performers and other special guests that make this more than just a trip.” For those members of the community who have been to Israel a few times, there is an option to attend the Jewish Federation General Assembly in Jerusalem. The Jewish Federations have been meeting at General Assemblies for over 80 years to network, learn from each other, and interface with world leaders. The program features themes that are timely and highly relevant to the Jewish community. But the GA is more than workshops and addresses by world leaders. It is a chance for members of the Jewish community to come together, spend time with old friends and colleagues, and connect with new ones. Gun Free Zones By Rabbi David Klatzker

These monthly rabbinic commentaries in the Chronicle usually focus on the Jewish holidays, but let me break with tradition and offer some thoughts on the urgent issue of gun control. The hamantaschen can wait. Rambam (Maimonides) said that when we hear about a misfortune that befalls the community, it is a mitzvah from the Torah to fast, give tzedakah, pray and study. In other words, he thought that we need to relate to an emergency as though we ourselves had something to do with it, and we have to make teshuvah. As Abraham Joshua Heschel put it, “Some are guilty, but

all are responsible.” If we as Jews take this message seriously, we should act. We must let Congress know that gun ownership should be limited to people who have neither criminal nor mental health records, and assault rifles should be banned. I do not believe in messianic politics, so I do not expect to see guns beaten into ploughshares anytime soon. I accept that Americans have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms. But there are limits on any right. And here is an interesting idea from the sociologist Amitai Etzioni: We can take some small steps, such as not allowing our children to visit

friends’ homes where guns are visible. We can make a public statement—why not put a sign in front of the JCC and our synagogues saying that “This is a gun free zone”? Why not put such signs in front of our homes and businesses? Schools already are gun free zones, under California law. Naturally, law enforcement officers and security guards are exempt. Some will say that gun free zones will leave us more exposed. But guns kept in the home for self-protection are forty-three times more likely to kill a family member, friend or acquaintance than to kill an intruder, according to a recent study. So what right

is being protected if it is not the right to be safe? The right to David feel safe, at Rabbi Klatzker the expense of actual safety? Real security is a matter of being tied to a healthy community. The gun free zone idea is something we can take up right now. It would at least point us in the right direction.

Beach Hillel also plans to partner with the community service group, PETRA, at the CSULB campus. Having dedicated students involved in community service will help us have an even stronger impact in repairing the world. We want to show students that building a home, reading with a child, helping those less fortunate can make an everlasting impact. Volunteering for the world community and in their own community, Beach Hillel is teaching students the value of repairing the world - Tikkun Olam.

Modern Music in an Ancient Land

He will discuss how various musical streams, traditions, and styles have helped create various forms of “Israeliness.” Using recordings and YouTube videos, he will examine the political and cultural history of Israeli music, the

With classes in full swing at CSULB, students are already awaiting summer break. The need for adventure and travel couldn’t have come at a better time - Birthright registration opened at the beginning of February. This was the perfect time for Beach Hillel to promote our summer trip to Israel. Taglit-Birthright Israel provides a 10-day trip for students between the ages of 18-26 a chance to travel throughout and experience Israel for the first time for free. Jewish students from all over the world get the chance to travel together and learn the Israeli culture. For many Beach Hillel students, their trips to Israel impacted their lives. “This experience has changed my life in a positive way and encouraged me to see more of the world,” said Candice Lebowitz, a summer of 2012 Birthright participant. She has since become the CSULB Grinspoon Intern through the Israel Campus Coalition. Ben Halperin, another participant, said “Birthright enabled me to connect with 48 people on a level different than I had with most of my friends in the United States. My Birthright group felt almost like family.” Students remember the trips years later and keep in contact with the people they have met. Beach Hillel wants every student who is eligible to be able to participate. To promote our Taglit-Birthright trip, we tabled on campus, made announcements in classes, and put up flyers and display cases around campus. We also had a Taglit-Birthright preview night, where students ate Israeli food and listened to Israeli music. They heard

about the hike up Masada, the night with the Bedouins, prayer at the Western Wall and all the other amazing things Taglit-Birthright has in store for them. It is important that every Jewish student has the opportunity to experience Israel, so that they return with memories and a connection to Israel and to the Jewish community. Beach Hillel provides students help in finding ways to return to Israel. This year, the California State University school system has opened up study abroad to Haifa University, a program Beach Hillel greatly supports and works hard to recruit students to attend. We are able to do so because of the connection created between our students and Israel. It’s our mission to create a vibrant and active Jewish life on campus. We can teach about holidays, traditions, and culture to students, but by visiting Israel - where religion, history, and culture originate- what they have learned is brought to life. We will continue to create such engaging experiences through Taglit-Birthright, in hopes of building and harboring relationships and feelings that are created on these life changing trips to Israel.

Since the start of the Israeli military action to stop rockets from being fired from Gaza, more than 100 anti-Israel rallies and demonstrations have taken place across the United States, with more than one-third of the total taking place on college campuses. The anti-Israel demonstrations on campus have included extreme rhetoric, including messages supporting “resistance,” comparisons of Israelis to Nazis, and accusations that the Jewish state is trying to perpetrate “another Holocaust” in Gaza. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) noted the increased organization of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), which arranged many of the protests on campus as well as several off-campus events in response to the Gaza crisis. The national student group issued a state-

ment last month condemning the “Israeli aggression on Gaza” and blamed Israel for a “violation of its truce with Hamas.” SJP, a student organization with more than 75 chapters at American universities, has campaigned for boycott and divestment against corporations that deal with Israel. The ADL is concerned about this activity on our local campus. “Students for Justice in Palestine has engaged in tactics and campaigns to silence and intimidate proIsrael advocates on campus,” said Melissa Carr, ADL Regional Director in Orange County/Long Beach. “Students have a right to express their views, but SJP’s tactics create tension on campus by marginalizing Israel supporters and fomenting hostility.”
