FEATURE STORY
2400 Hours; 15 Weeks; 100 Days of Jewish Impact By Danny Levy, Director of Development
he countdown has begun again. We, you, the community, embraced, participated, and benefited so well from last year’s 100 DAYS OF IMPACT that we are doing it all over again. Beginning January 1, 2016, the Jewish Federation has launched a community-wide effort of 100 DAYS OF IMPACT. Just like last year, we hope to raise big monies, with a goal of $1 million dollars ($900,000 towards the Annual Community Campaign, plus $100,000 towards the Fund for our Future). It’s a lot to ask, but now, we are all experts at it. Our tradition teaches us about counting up, not down. From the lowest lows, to the highest highs. These 100 DAYS OF IMPACT can demonstrate the thrill for the importance of growing and sustaining our community. In addition to giving to the Federation’s Annual Community Campaign, to impact our community partner agencies and synagogues, we are still raising funds for The Fund for our Future campaign. As a matter of fact, to kick off the 100 DAYS OF IMPACT, we are establishing a new endowment, the Deborah Goldfarb Community-wide Special Needs Program Fund, to honor our own Deborah Goldfarb, CEO, Federation and Foundation, for her ten years of service to our community. The endowment will fund events, education, and counseling of children with learning disabilities and autism disorders. You are invited to contribute to this endowment by contacting Danny Levy, 562426-7601 ext. 1007. We also need to continue our community conversations around what we expect, what we want now and what we want in the future. We want to hear what you have to say. We have to work together to lay the groundwork for sustainability. Here are a just a few ways that you can play a role in the 100 DAYS OF IMPACT: Join us on Day 13, Wednesday, January 13, 2016, for a free seminar on Planning, Preparing or Maintaining a Purposeful
Retirement, presented by the Jewish Community Foundation with a presentation from Todd Dixon, CRPS of Mutual of America. Held on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus beginning at 7:00 pm. Please see article on page 5.

This annual community campaign event brings together women from all over the community to celebrate the power of women and honor those that go beyond, to support our community as “Woman of VISION”. The co-chairs are once again the fabulous duo of Gail Levy and Sherri Selmanson, and they are planning a funfilled evening. Look in next month’s issue for more details about the program and community honorees. Through this event we hope to raise $50,000 towards our 100 Days of Impact goal. Attendees for both Above & Beyond and VISIONS are asked to make a minimum gift to the 2016/5776 Annual Community Campaign of $180. Your pledge can be paid in installments throughout the year, by check or credit card and you have until December 31, 2016 for final payment. Planning, Preparing or Maintaining a Purposeful Retirement By Jan Stein, Chair of the Legacy Committee
When is the Right Time to Retire? What Will I Do Once I Retire? How do I Securely Maximize My Retirement Savings? What Can I Do, If I Am Already Retired?...... Whether you are nearing retirement, on the verge, or already retired and have ever asked yourself any of the above questions, then please join us for a free seminar on Wednesday, January 13th at 7 p.m. to be held at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. This seminar is sponsored by the Jewish Community Foundation. The Foundation’s Legacy Committee is committed to offering a variety of educational opportunities open to our entire community. The featured speaker,
Todd Dixon ― Regional Participant Account Executive from Mutual of America, will provide a comprehensive overview of key issues people should be aware of when preparing for retirement. As Mr. Dixon states about the importance of this topic, “I’ve found over the years, many clients have a strategy in place to grow their investments, but do they have a plan to ensure they don’t outlive their money?” Mr. Dixon is an experienced and highly credentialed financial advisor and wealth manager. He joined Mutual of America in 2010 after working in wealth management with T. Rowe Price. Mr. Dixon is a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Series 7 and 63 registered

representative and has over 10 years of experience in the pension, insurance and financial services field. He has earned the designation of Chartered Retirement Plan Specialist (CRPS) from the College
Financial Planning. As a recent retiree, I have personally dealt with the issues, concerns and challenges faced by most people contemplating retirement. Many of these concerns are financial related, but I have also spent a lot of time pondering how I was going to make my retirement purposeful. In fact, I have found that well into this new phase of my life these issues must be continuously addressed. I am confident that Mr. Dixon’s presentation will provide valuable insights and strategies whether you are thinking about retirement or already a retiree. The program is open to the community and there is no fee. Please RSVP so that there are enough materials

Message from the Executive Director Over the past several weeks, as I watched the horrific acts of violence and hate carried out around the world, I kept thinking that the world needs more understanding, acceptance, and tolerance. I know the issue is much larger than that, but in my mind, if I break it down to its very basic elements, peace is about understanding who we are, accepting our differences, and having a tolerance for different beliefs. Sometimes I catch myself dreaming of a world without hatred and violence, a world that embraces diversity, and a world with embodies the values of understanding, acceptance, and tolerance. When I take a step back, though, I realize that I don’t have to dream because there is a place where everyone is accepted, a place where diversity is embraced, a place where there is a shared values of kindness and understanding, a place that I, like many of you, get to walk into every day—and that place is the Alpert Jewish Community Center. I was sharing with someone just recently that I viewed our community as this oasis of tolerance, accepting, and understanding, a place where people of different religions, cultures, ethnicities, and sexual orientations are warmly welcomed and embraced as part of our community. In fact, it is that incredible diversity which adds to the special and unique community of the Alpert JCC. I feel very fortunate to be a part of this oasis. As we start the new year, I wish you all a year of peace, happiness, and health, and I wish everyone who is not a member of the Alpert JCC that they too can have their own experience of understanding, acceptance, tolerance and peace!
L’Shalom

You Never Know the Impact of Senior Outreach By Elana Zisser
“The process of becoming an empty nester can’t be rushed. Maybe you’ll begin to figure it out by the time your child graduates from college.” I wondered if the professor of psychology at the Emory University orientation session was speaking directly to me in the packed room of parents. Even better, I was so relieved to hear that I had four whole years to figure out what to do with my life! That was three and a half years ago. With the clock ticking this past Rosh Hashanah, I volunteered with the Alpert JCC’s Senior Outreach under the direction of a dear friend, Dr. Susan Mathieu. The volunteers stuffed bags with round challahs, packets of honey and dried fruit, artsy Jewish calendars, and special, handmade Rosh Hashanah cards made by the children from the JCC. I was assigned two driving routes and given the mission to drop off about 18 bags. I requested two additional bags for senior friends back in my home turf, just outside of Long Beach. After delivering the bags to the most appreciative seniors in the Long Beach area, I headed for the seniors in my neighborhood. As I approached my beloved senior friend in a rehabilitation center, I noticed that she was no longer speaking very much. Just two weeks prior we had had a lively conversation. Throughout the twenty-three years that I’d known her, nothing had mattered more to this woman of valor than her family, her Jewish community, and the observance of a life according to the rhythms of the Jewish calendar. We visited and, together with her daughter, we enjoyed the beautiful Jewish art calendar. I left the challah behind for my senior friend to enjoy with her adult children.

Holiday Table in Celebration of Tu B'Shevat Monday, January 25, 9am
It was just after Rosh Hashanah that I sat at the funeral of my beloved friend. At the memorial service, her son spoke about the challah that was dropped off for his mom so that she could have some challah and honey for Rosh Hashanah. With tears, the son recalled that although his dear mother wasn’t speaking much, when he unwrapped the challah, she spontaneously said motzi (the Jewish blessing over bread). Senior Outreach at the Alpert JCC isn’t just good programming. It is a meaningful obligation that connects us to Judaism and to each other. It is a mitzvah (obligation). In Pirkei Avot (Sayings of the Fathers), we learn that “mitzvah goreret mitzvah” or “one good deed will bring another good deed”. It seems that there is no end to this mitzvah; the mitzvah of standing and giving respect to the elderly. The truth, as you may realize, is that the mitzvah was a blessing for me. Meeting all of the wonderful, appreciative seniors uplifted my spirit and soul. I felt that I used my life for good. My youngest graduates this May and I still haven’t figured out what to do with my life. But maybe I can figure out how to find meaning, day by day, one mitzvah and one outreach at a time.

Interview with Ignacio Berumen, Aquatics Manager, Alpert JCC by Erika Hillinger Born and raised in Los Angeles, Ignacio began his Aquatics career working for the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and the American Red Cross 22 years ago. He joined the team at the Alpert JCC in October of 2014. Although he enjoyed his time working for the City of LA, he jumped at the opportunity to work for the AJCC, where he says the position has “met and exceeded all my expectations. When I started working at the J, I had a very limited idea about just what running an aquatics department was all about, but now I see how much goes into making a great department. Having regular meetings with the Executive Director has helped me to grow as a person and as a professional. Meeting with the different departments and understanding their needs, and working with the marketing department, has allowed me to grow the Aquatics department.”
Teen Snowboarding/Ski Trip to Mt High Monday, February 8
6th Grade & Up! It’s time to hit the slopes! It doesn’t matter if you’re a skier, a snowboarder, or a hot chocolate sipper, we know you’ll have a blast! Different packages available for all levels and abilities. Space is extremely limited. For more information visit our website or contact Natalie Chernik at (562) 426-7601, ext. 1205 or nchernik@alpertjcc.org
Ignacio has experience in all areas of Aquatics, and this, accompanied by his contagious good humor and enthusiasm, makes him an effective manager: “I’ve been teaching swim lessons since 1993, and I never get tired of it. I get excited going through the process and knowing that I am making a difference in the students’ lives. Overcoming the fear of water is such a great thing, and they are so excited about. My ability to give Red Cross certifications to so many staff at the J has also been a great thing because it has allowed me to concentrate on my work knowing I can depend on the other departments to be Red Cross certified.”
4a
For the future, Ignacio plans to continue improving the quality of lessons, and enhancing healthy lifestyles for individuals who enjoy the wonderful world of swimming. “I’ve almost quadrupled the programs, adding a lot more lessons, and not just for small children but for older youths and adults as well. We have had great success with adults who have learned to conquer their swimming fears. It’s one of the reasons I like to personally teach the older students. I used to be a Mommy and Me instructor, and that is a program I am hoping we can also implement going forward. I’m looking forward to a great 2016!” So are we, Ignacio!

Youth and Extremism Debbie Freeman
Director of Clinical Services, Jewish Family & Children’s Service
One of the most important issues of our time has to do with keeping our kids, our families, and our communities safe. As we work to build strong family ties there are forces that undermine our efforts. With so many recent mass shootings, safety is certainly top of mind for all of us. For parents of teens and college students, there is a strong need to understand the reasons that religious extremists and cults may be attractive to young people. Some organizations target high school and college kids with recruitment campaigns, not somewhere far off on other lands but here in America, using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and
propaganda-laden websites. It is deeply disturbing and unbelievable that these groups use social media to recruit kids to join their violent cause. Numerous Western countries have issued reports on the number of people who have left their country to join a prominent terrorist group in the Middle East, and not surprisingly, some have been killed in fighting as members of these groups. Some countries are taking measures to ban activities supporting some of these extremist groups, while others are keeping a close eye on their citizens who have recently returned from Syria and other hotbeds of terrorism. What draws Western youth to leave behind comfortable lives of privilege to join viole n t t er ror organizations? Christopher Dickey, a foreign editor of
The Daily Beast, recently said on CNN that many recruits are young men in their teens and 20’s. What draws them into the fight is a combination that he calls “TNT,” which stands for Testosterone, Narrative and Theater. They are “almost all young guys, they passionately identify themselves with some oppressed people,” and “they want to project themselves on the world stage,” he explains. Their drive is a deadly combination of youthful fantasies and aspirations to “be someone.” The Christian Science Monitor elaborates on the reasons why young Westerners would become attracted to a violent extremist group. First, groups of this type prey on youth who are disillusioned and have no sense of purpose or belonging. Much like criminal gangs and religious cults, terrorist groups offer
disaffected teens a chance to join a group that gives them purpose and meaning. They also offer structure and a defined place within the society they have created, which appeals to someone who feels he is adrift in the world. Second, these groups appeal to a sense of duty and a youthful desire to feel connected to others. Many of these youth are new converts to the religious beliefs of the group, and if violence is a part of the group’s culture, fighting serves as a proving ground for their new beliefs. Furthermore, the internet and social media allow cults and extremist groups to unleash a sophisticated propaganda machine. By depicting a perfect world which can be obtained through religious zeal, cults and extremist groups lure youth who are in search of a place they can call their own.
Young people search to find out who they are and where they fit in the world. With studies that show one in three American teenagers experience bullying at school, the appeal to break through isolation and find acceptance becomes real, even if it means adopting extremist ideologies. Parents must be proactive and discuss the reliability of online content with their children, the possible motivations of the source of the content, and the potential for manipulation to help children think critically about the content they consume. Parents should also be keenly aware of changes in a child’s behavior. The challenges that come with policing internet content are evident; therefore the best way to ensure children’s safety is through teaching them to be resilient and responsible while online.
program included adopting two families for the holidays. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with Assistance League of Long Beach, an organization that does so much for the greater Long Beach community,” said JFCS Executive Director
Kathryn Miles. She added, “We are so grateful to all who offered a helping hand to those who so desperately need assistance. The holiday season brings out the best in those of us who are able to give to others.”
Brightening the Holiday Season Thanks to the generosity of many in the community, the holidays were happier for 20 less fortunate families, resulting in over 70 individuals receiving gifts this year. Skillfully coordinated by board members Gail Levy, Gael Libby, and Nancy Linden, JFCS played the role of “Yenta” for its Adopt-aFamily program, matching those in need with those who were ready to provide it. The Alpert JCC Early Childhood Education program performed a mitzvah with their Tzedakah contributions collected from mid-November to mid-December. With the leadership and guidance of Shlomit Jackson, Jewish Educator, the Pre-Kindergarten and the Pre-School children
each adopted a JFCS client family in need so that the children of these families would have a happy and memorable holiday. The donations were used to purchase much-needed clothing as well as toys, books, and other gifts. JFCS supplied ECE with details of the children in these families, such as their ages, genders, likes, dislikes, favorite color, and needs. As the shoppers in charge of purchasing the gifts, the ECE teachers chose wisely and carefully for each of the recipients. In total, ECE raised over $800 to provide gifts for the 2 families. The generosity didn’t stop with the ECE. The Temple Israel Sisterhood, led by Social Action Committee
Chair Kathy Kreida, offered gifts for six families with a total of 18 people. NCJW provided gifts for a single mother with three children. The Women’s Philanthropy division of the Jewish Federation also participated by supporting a family with four children. A local church stepped in to adopt a family of four that is struggling due to a serious illness in the family. JFCS board members also made significant contributions to the effort. Six additional board members adopted families or made donations that ensured that none of the JFCS clients in need would be left out. JFCS was also able to fulfill a request by the Assistance League of Long Beach, whose philanthropic
ECE photo—Children and teachers from the Alpert JCC Early Childhood Education Program gathered to present JFCS with gifts for two families in need. ECE families donated over $800 in tzedakah to provide toys, clothing, food, and other essentials for the two families.

Students Dig into the Science Curriculum The Hebrew Academy’s middle school Earth Science classes have metaphorically dug into the Earth this quarter. Throughout the last two weeks, students’ study of rocks and minerals has pointed them to drill down in the Earth’s surface. Our young Jewish scientists first researched and were assessed on their knowledge of the qualities of rocks, minerals, and crystals. Once armed with this knowledge, students used their disambiguation (scientific classification) skills to become geologists. These bright students integrated their conceptual knowledge, talented problem-solving skills, and laborator y experience to test various properties of the objects. The big test was when the students compared and
contrasted their analyses as a class. These hands-on, collaborative experiences are vital to students’ growth as learners; the tangible and real-world work connects the content to their learning in a very
tangible way. Instead of simply learning the properties of minerals as typical students would, our Hebrew Academy students became scientists and worked with the minerals directly to develop their skills as mineralogist.
This is just a small sample of the many compliments of our students and school that I receive on a daily basis. It warms my heart to see our young Hebrew Academy ambassadors building their confidence and skills so that they are prepared for their future successes. The educational and social environment here truly
focuses on fostering our students’ habits of mind. We help students gain the selfdiscipline, motivation, and the perseverance required to move beyond just being typical students. Our Jewish students are strong citizens, scholars and friends. They take their learning, playing and communicating seriously, which in turn establishes
them as students who earn compliments such as the one I shared above. Should you wish to learn more about the outstanding programs featured at Hebrew Academy or schedule a tour of the campus, please contact our Admissions Department.

Consul General of Israel David Siegel to Speak at Town Hall Meeting On Wednesday, February 10, 2016 the Jewish Federation, along with all of our area Jewish agencies and synagogues, will be hosting David Siegel, the Consul General of Israel, for a town hall meeting. The evening program will feature an up-to-the-minute report on what is going on in Israel and Israel’s perspective of what is going on in the region from a senior representative of the State of Israel, followed by a question and answer session. Many of the community’s local elected officials, as well as area clergy, will be invited to attend this event. David Siegel assumed the post of Consul General of Israel in Los Angeles in 2011, where he serves as the senior representative of the State of Israel to the Southwestern United States. Before taking over as the Consul General, David Siegel served as Chief of Staff to Israel’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and was involved in policy formulation and
decision-making at the senior levels of Israel’s foreign policy establishment. He also served two terms at the Embassy of Israel in Washington D.C. and was deeply involved in policy coordination with the State Department, the National Security Council, and the White House. In addition, he participated in the 1998 Wye River Peace Summit, the 1999 Israel-Syria negotiations, and the Camp David Middle East Peace Summit in the fall of 2000. “The opportunity to bring a senior representative of Israel, like Consul General Siegel, to our community
is wonderful,” explains Deborah Goldfarb, Jewish Federation’s Chief Executive Officer. “It is my hope that this event will open the eyes of many in our community as they hear what is going on in Israel and the amazing impact Israel has on the entire world.” The event will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Harry & Jeannette Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, 3801 East Willow Street in Long Beach. There is no fee to attend but you must RSVP and you will be asked to show a photo I.D. at the door. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. to allow time for everyone to register and be seated. Please do not bring backpacks or large handbags. To learn more about this event, please contact Sharon Kenigsberg at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008 or to RSVP, email events@ jewishlongbeach.org
