FEATURE STORY
My Mom, Barbara Alpert, Offers Amazing Matching Gift By Nancy Alpert
Barbara and Nancy Alpert
Editorial Note: The wonderful and ever-giving, Barbara Alpert was so moved on the yahrzeit of her much beloved Ray, that she interrupted Hank Feldman, Jewish Federation President, during his state of the agency speech at the combined Annual Meeting with the Jewish Community Foundation. She stood up, mentioned it was the year anniversary to the day we all lost Ray, and that in his honor she wanted to offer up a matching pledge towards the Federations 2015/5775 Annual Community Campaign. She said she would gift $100,000 for the match, dollar for dollar. At first you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was so full of emotion, feeling the same angst of the anniversary of Ray’s passing along with Barbara, and then absorbing the sheer feel-good of her proposal. The room erupted into non-stop applause. It was a great pivotal community moment --- you could not have scripted it any better. Such a great honor for Ray, for her, and the entire Alpert family. We are all so blessed. The Alpert Match, as we are calling it, has already brought in over $45,000. With Barbara’s match we need to reach our goal by the end of August. SO, if you have not yet made your pledge toward the 2015/5775 Federation Annual Community Campaign please do so. OR, if you have already pledged, consider an increase. You may pledge now and pay by December 31, 2015. To donate visit jewishlongbeach.org/donate or call (562) 4267601 ext. 1007.
My mom, Barbara Alpert, has lived in the same house in Long Beach for 52 years, but when we drive around the neighborhood, she often points out the bigger houses that she “almost” bought. I’ve come to realize that the Alpert Jewish Community Center provides her not only that “bigger house,” but, more importantly, a warm, inviting home where she loves to hang out with her almost 3,000 quasi-family members! The story goes back to 1952, when mom met my beloved dad, Raymond (z”l). Her immediate relief was that he was tall. It didn’t take long for her to also notice his good heart and generous ways.
Together, my mom and dad became strong supporters of the Long Beach community, giving both time and financial resources to causes dear to them. Mom is proud of her part in instigating the Jewish Community Center’s first large-scale Women’s Conference — attended by over 250 women — with concurrent lectures by Skirball professionals, community leaders, and more. My sister, Teri, and brother, Alan, and I went to Temple Israel Hebrew School, and I attended the Jewish Community Center (JCC) Building’s summer day camp when it was located in the older community center. I remember acting out stories from Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Fools of Chelm there. I also spent one summer as a counselorin-training at Camp Komaroff. Our family loved being Jewish and feeling part of the community. When the new JCC Building was proposed, my parents felt it “wasn’t right” for it to be named after out-of-towners. They stepped up to offer a large donation and loving involvement for the soonto-be named Alpert Jewish Community Center. The Alpert Jewish Community Center has been the setting for so many Alpert family occasions: a BBQ party with hot dogs for my parent’s 50th anniversary; my sister-in-law, Sophie’s non-profit, Piece by Piece’s mosaic art show; mom’s 80th Jubilee Birthday complete with sing-along show tunes, two nights of Shiva for my dad, and most recently, mom’s honoring by the National Council of Jewish Women.
Barbara Alpert at Lion of Judah Conference
Day 1: Me: “What’d you do today mom?” Her: “I played Mahj /Bridge with the girls at the Center and swam a little.”(She might lose or win anywhere from 25 cents to $1.25.) Day 2: Me: “How was your day?” Her: “Great, I heard a fascinating lecture sponsored by the Federation about ISIS, at the JCC.” Day 3: Me: “Did you take it easy today mom?” Her: “No, I worked out at the Center with my personal trainer.” (She’s trying to exercise 3x/week.) Day 4: Me: “I’m pooped. How are you feeling?” Her: “A little tired—I came home from the Jewish Federation Board Meeting at 11 pm and had to deal with an ant infestation.” Day 5: Me: “Mom, did you sleep in after that late night?” Her: “Nope, I wanted to go to the Senior Happy Lecture and lunch. I love that Susan!” You get the idea. My mom is four-score and more, yet she runs circles around most people. It might be time to give her a curfew.
Barbara and Ray* Alpert
More than anything, mom loves walking into the Center and seeing the children pulling their rolling backpacks and looking so happy. You could say the Center is the center of her life. Here is a sample of phone calls I might have with my mom on any given week:

I’m giving you this glimpse into my mom’s life because, per the open letter addressed to “Fellow Community Members,” she has made a significant matching gift donation and challenge for the Jewish Federation Annual Community Campaign. Mom wanted to honor the memory of my dad and to support the community that she deeply loves. I hope you will honor my amazing mom with a donation to the Annual Campaign. After all, you’re part of the family! Nancy

Fashion for a Cause is Approaching Soon! Excitement is building as Thursday, September 10 approaches. That is the date for RUNWAY Perspectives 2015, and this year’s event is sure to enlighten and entertain while raising funds for Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Long Beach/ West Orange County. With the focus on keeping the event fresh and exciting, today’s hottest fashion topics will be presented in a segmented, talk-show format which will illustrate themes of fashion, beauty, and wellness in an informative, entertaining way. Kicking off the event will be three lucky women who sponsored RUNWAY at the Collection Level ($500) to participate in a “before and after” segment,
where they will undergo make-overs during the event. They will prior appear on stage for all to see before being whisked away behind the scenes in preparation to re-emerge with new make-up, hair styling, and clothing. One of the segments features the event’s Chief Visionary Officer Wendy Manasse, herself a fashion designer for more than 25 years, who will curate and present “The 10 Must-Haves for Your Wardrobe and How to Make Them Work for You.” Professional models will show the audience key pieces for your wardrobe provided by Macy’s at Los Cerritos Center, and how they are easily transformed using shoes, handbags, and accessories to take a woman from day to
night, casual to elegant, whatever her life style. Last year’s auction of unique experiences will be replaced by several opportunity drawings. Each segment of the production will be tied to a one-of-akind experience that cannot be found or purchased anywhere else. Tickets for these experiences will be priced at $50 and will be sold in advance, as well as during the cocktail and networking hour that begins at 5:00 p.m. And best of all, the New York Experience is back! Round trip air travel to New York for two, a hotel for two nights, and a visit to one of Hearst Publications fashion magazines for a tour, lunch in the cafeteria, and a visit to their exclusive closet will once again be awarded

to a lucky drawing winner. Tickets for the New York experience are $100 and no more than 100 tickets will be sold. They will also be available in advance and during the cocktail hour. Tabata intervals (named for Japanese researcher Izumi Tabata) are a great example of structured intervals. Tabata training includes a 20-second high-intensity anaerobic work interval followed by a 10-second rest, repeated eight times in a row. In a creative twist on Tabata, this workout alternates moderate-intensity intervals with higherintensity bouts of the same exercise. Three intensity options allow people of different fitness levels to start at different points, while still having a way to progress through the pattern. For example, beginners may start at level 1 as their “moderate” intensity and progress to level 2 as their “high” intensity, while fitter participants may start at level 2 and progress to level 3. Students perform the exercises at a fast pace, doing as many repetitions as possible while maintaining proper body alignment and full range of motion. Participants rest briefly (10–20 seconds) between work intervals and repeat each work-rest cycle twice per exercise.

Basketball Success
To achieve success in any field, including the basketball court, one must develop good habits while at the same time avoiding or eliminating bad habits. And good habits are developed the same way bad habits are—through repetition and practice. The Alpert JCC offers a popular year-round youth basketball league where boys and girls ages 5-13 practice good basketball habits on the court while having a great time. Led by former Michigan State and NBA star Pete Davis and his team of coaches, the league emphasizes sound fundamentals, skill development, sportsmanship, and partnership with families.

What makes Kids’ University, the Alpert JCC’s popular afterschool enrichment program, so successful? It probably starts with the fact that we have trained, experienced staff on hand to work with each child. The safety and security that parents have come to expect from the AJCC is one more reason. And the fact that our buses are waiting at many Long Beach area schools when that final bell rings is certainly a plus. Supervised homework assistance means that each child is focused on what’s most important, and the enrichment classes that range from computer lab to swimming, theater arts, dance, Judaic studies and more—well, they all make up the so-called icing on the cake! Make an appointment to discuss Kids’ University with Program Director Natalie Chernik, and you’ll see just how Kids’ University is truly designed to make each and every child more successful in, and out, of the classroom.

Passionate Rabbi
R E F L E C T I O N S
By Rabbi Mariana Gindlin
I am so excited to be here in Lakewood, leading Congregation Shir Chadash. I am the proud Rabbi Mariana mother to an Gindlin amazing 2 and a half year old recently adopted son, Daniel, who is the light of my life. We found in Shir Chadash warmth that you can only experience in such a small congregation. Shir Chadash has become our new temple family, and we hope that soon the community at large becomes our new extended family. I’ve been a full-time Cantor/Musical Director in the United States for the past 13 years, at congregations in Florida, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I was a Cantor at congregations in Buenos Aires where I served as a Music Teacher and Choir
Director for several prominent Jewish institutions. I studied at the Latin American Rabbinical Seminary and at the National Conservatory of Music in Argentina. I also completed the 2-year cantorial program of study and practice for Cantors at the Institute for Jewish Spirituality. It has given me great pleasure to have performed extensively throughout the world. One of my favorite concerts includes being invited by the Cantors Assembly to perform at the Philharmonic Hall of Krakow as part of the Jewish Music Festival. I have also sung in the cities of Berlin, Ariel, and Tel Aviv. Throughout the years, I have produced and performed in three critically acclaimed CDs of inspiring Jewish music. You can listen to my music at www.marianagindlin.com. Besides my musical skills, I am a licensed psychologist (UBA) and am fluent in several languages, including English,
Spanish, Hebrew and Yiddish. I have taught workshops at the 2005 American Conference of Cantors convention in New Orleans, the 2005 Coalition for the Advancement in Jewish Education (CAJE) convention, and the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation convention in 2010. I am very committed to social justice and interfaith community work. In the past, I have worked with diverse communities to come together to build relationships and act together for our common good. I helped launch Nevadans for the Common Good, an organization that enables community leaders to engage in public life. I delivered their opening prayer at the founding convention in front of 1,500 leaders from 65 congregations and community organizations in Nevada. Moreover, I organized the 2013 and 2014 Global Day for Jewish Learning events. Another highlight was being able to travel to Israel to
