FEATURE STORY

PJ Library Touches Lives By Jillian Weyman, Hebrew Union College Intern

Jewish community in some capacity (mostly through the AJCC and/or a synagogue).

PJ Library, now in its third year in our community, sends free, quality Jewish books to families raising children ages 6 months - 8 years old. Each month, children enrolled in the program receive an ageappropriate book or a Jewish music CD in the mail. Also contained in these books are helpful lesson guides to help parents guide meaningful conversations pertaining to the literature. These books introduce the child to Jewish values, ideas and traditions. Parents also receive a monthly e-newsletter with links to articles about Jewish parenting, ways to teach their children about Judaism, and links to local Jewish events. These subscriptions are free to the families in our community, thanks to the partnership of the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County, the Alpert Jewish Community Center, Temple Israel of Long Beach and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. PJ Library Success When philanthropist, Harold Grinspoon started the program in 2005, his goals were to connect young Jewish Families to each other and to the larger organized Jewish community. His efforts allowed simple snuggly bedtime moments to be turned into “Jewish” moments at home. The success of PJ has been meteoric. In 2005, only 200 books were sent nationwide. As of 2013, the PJ program provides 5 million Jewish books in 5 countries and in 4 languages. As the PJ Library program enters its third year here, the Jewish Federation conducted a survey for participating families to better evaluate its impact and meaningfulness on Jewish family life in our community. At the time the survey was distributed, 217 families were registered. Currently, that number exceeds 250 families, serving more than 340 children. Forty-five families filled out the survey for a sample size of about 20%. Generally, those who filled out the survey represent families with smaller children who live in the greater Long Beach area and are already connected to the

The Books There is no doubt that the PJ Library books and CDs are the most popular and meaningful aspect of the program for families. 95% of respondents indicated that prior to joining the PJ Library program, their children’s book collection contained 0 - 25% Jewish content. More than half of the respondents have now been receiving PJ Library books for the past 1-2 years. Moreover, one third of respondents will read their books 1-2 times per week. In the survey that was distributed, one parent said, “PJ Library books are some of my daughter’s favorite books that she wants to read over and over and over again!” A second parent shared, “I love receiving books about the Jewish culture and tradition. It really helps me teach my children about their heritage.” Outreach 77% of respondents have recommended PJ Library to someone else in the community. For respondents who did not make any recommendations, it was not because they did not want to; rather they did not have the Jewish friends to reach out to. By participating in PJ Library, more than half of respondents are more likely to be interested in participating with Jewish community events, programs, and holiday celebrations. Additionally, 75% of respondents are interested in increasing their children’s participation in community events, programs, and holiday celebrations. As a result of the program, a third of respondents had increased the likelihood of their family’s participation in Jewish community activities. Impact By the numbers alone, it is evident that the PJ Library program is having a profound impact on the Jewish lives of the families involved. 100% of respondents find the PJ Library to be meaningful for their families, 91% agree that it enhances their family’s Jewish life, 80% agree that PJ Library has created opportunities for their children to ask questions about being Jewish, 77% agree that PJ Library has made them think more about how to parent Jewishly, 89% agree it has made them think more about the kinds of Jewish traditions they want in their home, and 89% agree that PJ Library helps their family feel connected to the Jewish community. Qualitative data from the survey helps reinforce the statistics. One parent affiliated with the PJ program said, “We use the books in preparation and as follow-up for each upcoming holiday. It helps [my children] anticipate traditions, find ways to insert themselves in the observances, and get excited about the celebrations.”

PJ Library programs One of the goals of PJ Library is to connect families through free PJ Library events. Past PJ events have included story time at the Marina Pacifica Barnes & Noble, story time at the park, a Pajama Pizza Party at Temple Israel and Sukkot celebrations under the Sukkah at the Alpert JCC, Tu B’ Shevat Tot Shabbat, Rosh HaShanah story walk at a park and more. Shlomit Jackson, Sharon Amster Brown and the PJ parent committee plan to offer more programs in the coming year. We are fast approaching the maximum number of subscriptions that we have funding for and are looking for sponsors. If you would like to be a sponsor of PJ library in our community or with a gift in your will or trust, please contact Sharon Kenigsberg at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008 or sharonk@jewishlongbeach.org. INSIDE THE CHRONICLE

The Jewish Community

An Overview of Our Work this Past Year Deborah K. Goldfarb Chief Executive Officer, Jewish Federation Jewish Community Foundation

It takes a large group of committed and energetic leaders and volunteers to face the challenges of an ever changing community. We are proud of the work our board members, volunteers, and donors have done over the past year to help ensure the future of a

thriving Jewish community in Long Beach, in Israel and throughout the world. This year we recognized Binnie & Jack Berro as recipients of the Robert Baldwin Community Service Award. As long standing Long Beach leaders, the Berros have contributed immeasurably to the welfare of our community. We are honored that Nicole Malina is the recipient of the Fred Neuburger Young Leadership Award. Nicole

is a shining example of the graduates of the Alpert New Leaders Forum. We have so many accomplishments to be proud of. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014 the Federation and Foundation provided nearly $2.5M of funding for programs locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The 2014 Annual Campaign alone gave out over $1M to 20 organizations. In the past nine months, future

bequest promises and current Fund for our Future contributions grew to nearly $13M. Jewish Community Foundation assets continued to grow to nearly $18M, and our future is bright as new members continue to join the ranks of the Legacy Society each year. Alpert New Leaders Forum alumni continue to impact the community through their involvement. Our partnership with our beneficiary agencies continues to expand, and

our funding continues to support synagogue education programs as well. We are proud of all we have impacted! Thank you to all of our many donors and community members who help our community go from strength to strength each year. You truly make a difference in the lives of our children, families and seniors.

areas: Jewish Community Impact, Human Services, Jewish Identity, Financial Impact, and Collaboration and Capacity Building. I want to also acknowledge the $35K distributed to area Synagogues for Torah Center support. I believe this is key in supporting, engaging and educating our Synagogues about Federation. The PJ Library is another example of one of the important program the Federation delivers to the community. The PJ Library, in partnership with the Alpert JCC, Temple Israel and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, delivered 2988 Jewish themed books to 249 families in our community in the past year. This past year our community lost Ray Alpert and Eva Schlesinger. They were leaders and guiding lights in Long Beach for over 40 years and they will be dearly missed. A recent risk analysis has reported that our community campaign stands to lose 35% of our gifts within the next 5 to 10 years. While many see

this as doom and gloom, I see it as a challenge and opportunity. Our community enjoys some of the brightest, innovative and dynamics minds found anywhere. The Federation and our partner agencies must come together and meet these challenges head on. We have already begun the process, engaging the stakeholders to work together to develop a plan that will insure we are here for our community tomorrow and for future generations. I would like to thank the Federation Board for their hard work over the past year. I want also to thank retiring board members for their service. Congratulations to the Graduates of this year’s Alpert New Leader’s Forum. We look to your involvement and impact on the community in the year’ to come. I have been extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Lea Gerber, Community Foundation President. My

Jewish Federation Year in Review Hank Feldman Jewish Federation President

As I reflect on the previous year’s accomplishments I believe we have much to be proud of in our community. We began the year with another Opening Night success in collaboration with the Alpert JCC’s Film Festival. This is a great example of working with our Partner Agencies for the benefit of the entire community. This year also opened with a renewed Major Gifts Events graciously hosted by the Rosenberg’s and highlighted with an inspirational speech by Gene Lentzner. I would like to thank Craig Kain, our Vice President of Financial Resource Development, and Laurie Raykoff, Community Campaign Chair, for all their hard work throughout this year. Our Legacy of Leadership event this year was another great success raising nearly $22,000 for each of our Partner Agencies. Thank you

to Jim and Nancy Linden and Larry and Shari Nemirow for making this event a special evening for our Honorees: Gordon and Judi Lentzner, Sy and Reva Alban and Jim and Liz Breslauer. Activities & Engagements Our 2nd Men’s Philanthropy event “Above and Beyond” was another success story as we continue to engage men of all ages with compelling venues and speakers. I was so excited to see so many fathers and sons at this year’s event. I would like to recognize Danny Levy and the committee for their hard work behind the scenes to make this event a success. Sherri Co-chairs Selmanson and Gail Levy did a phenomenal job putting together this year’s Arlene Solomon VISIONS Dinner. The strength of our Jewish Community is clearly demonstrated by the will and determination of the women that attend and support VISIONS and participate with Women’s Philanthropy. I would like to recognize Sharon Kenigsberg for everything she does to

make Women’s Philanthropy happen. Thank you to my wife Joyce Feldman, the Women’s Philanthropy Chair for the past two years. Our recently completed “100 Days of Impact Campaign” was a huge success and raised over $1,000,000 towards the 2015/5775 Annual Community Campaign and the Fund for our Future. However our work is not complete as we still need to raise another $200,000 to reach the goal of our Annual Community Campaign. Our Allocations Committee recently completed its charge of allocating the monies raised from last year’s Community Campaign. Several years ago the committee took a new approach to the Annual Allocation. I am very proud of the dedication and hard work the committee, led by Don Kaiser, has demonstrated in allocating needed operational funds and Priority Program Grants to your partner agencies, utilizing a process that addressed needs in the following

Foundation Committees The Grants Committee, for the first time in 8 years, distributed $30,000 over the last two years to the agencies and area synagogues. The Legacy Committee continued its role as a m b a s s a d o r in the community by educating members and estate planners, attorneys and accountants about the role the Foundation can play as a partner in their estate planning. The committee held the annual Legacy Society Brunch where members are honored for establishing legacy gifts for the future. This year we invited the Alpert New Leaders so that they could meet the pillars of our community who started it all. We felt it was important that both groups meet each other. Our new leaders are an impressive group. They are busy pursuing careers, raising young families and yet make the time to be

involved in the community. Folks, we are in good hands, they will do a great job. The Investment Committee engaged in an extensive review of the investment portfolio and investment policy and made strategic changes to enhance the return on investment. The Policy Committee completed several policies that will be part of a manual that will meet the Foundation’s goal of formalizing procedures and processes. And lastly, the By-laws Committee reviewed and updated the by-laws as part of the Foundation’s due diligence process.

Toda Raba Thank you to the Board of Trustees for their dedication and hard work in meeting our goals. It has been an honor to work with such talented and experienced individuals. Thanks to the staff, the past presidents, and Federation President Hank Feldman for supporting our work. I wish Rick Freeman my very best in his role as the incoming Foundation President. Moving Forward Let’s continue the work of the Foundation and strive to secure a continued vibrant Jewish life in Long Beach. Thank you!

Why Choose a Jewish Day School?

With intimate class sizes, and a curriculum that is rich in critical thinking and leadership opportunities, there is a tremendous value proposition for a top tier secular and Jewish education. But what can you expect to gain by providing a Jewish Day School education for your child? The following information is adapted from What Difference Does a Day School Make? Impact of Day School - a comparative analysis, by the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education. •Jewish Day School graduates express a strong sense of responsibility towards addressing the

needs of the larger society by influencing social values, helping those in need, volunteering their time to social change efforts and finding careers that allow them to be of service to the larger community. •Jewish day school graduates are more resistant to social pressures that lead to risky behaviors than their public and private school peers. Our students have empathy and integrity based on Jewish values. •A Jewish day school education cultivates a strong engagement to Judaism and a strong connection to Israel, which results in positive involvement in Jewish life in local community, the college

campus and beyond. •Alumni of Jewish schools gain admittance to colleges and universities that represent the full spectrum of institutions of higher learning including the most highly selective. •Students who attend Jewish day schools participate in all aspects of High School and undergraduate college life and are well represented in the ranks of student leaders. •Neuro-scientific research suggests that at a young age, children have a greater capacity to learn a foreign language. Students that study Hebrew daily, and are able to read, write and speak competently by graduation.

We Are The Hebrew Academy

Brandy and Steve Hattendorf,Sheli (7)1st grade, Anna (5) kindergarten and Joy (2) preschool

We choose The Hebrew Academy because we value education. Our daughters receive an extraordinary, individualized academic education while gaining a strong core foundation of Jewish values and ideas. We confidently know our girls are being academically challenged within a loving,

nurturing environment that includes great hands-on classes such as art and music. We have done extensive research to find the best school for our children, and we have chosen The Hebrew Academy because we do not believe any school in the region can compare.

You’re a Grand Old Flag

R E F L E C T I O N S

By Rabbi Mark B. Goldfarb

Each year, at Temple Beth Ohr, our Confirmation class students participate Rabbi Mark in the Union Goldfarb for Reform Judaism’s Religious Action Center’s Rapoport L’taken Seminar. This amazing fourday political advocacy conference brings together hundreds of Jewish teens from all over the United States to Washington, D.C., educating them about some of the important issues facing our Jewish community with a multitude of speakers from a wide array of sectors. It leads up to the culmination of a visit to Capitol Hill where these young rising leaders deliver individual handwritten speeches to their respective members of Congress. In addition to the studies, learning and writing, the students have some limited leisure time to see some of the

sights in our nation’s capital. One of the places I enjoy visiting with our students is the Smithsonian Museum of American History. In addition to seeing Fonzie’s leather jacket, Edith & Archie Bunker’s chairs, Dorothy’s ruby slippers, Abraham Lincoln’s top hat, and Julia Child’s original TV show kitchen, it is the flag which inspired Francis Scott Key that most captures our students’, and my, imagination. The flag was originally flown by U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort McHenry in Baltimore on September 14, 1814, celebrating a hardfought victory over British forces during the War of 1812. The flag was carelessly stored for many decades and bears all the signs of its neglectful storage and attempts at conservation. Nevertheless, it is a sight to behold. Featuring 14 stars (the 15th was removed and never recovered), 15 stripes,

and measuring 30 feet by 34 feet, it is a powerful symbol of our nation: not perfect, a bit tattered in places, but still here and working to improve. That is the beauty and the challenge of our nation, to fully understand our collective past and to positively reinvent who and what we are becoming as a nation. When I was a Rabbinical student studying at the Hebrew Union CollegeJewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio, there was a flag on the stained glass windows inside the Scheuer Chapel that always caught my eye. It featured the American Flag in the background with the tablets of the Ten Commandments in the foreground. The ultimate depiction of American Reform Judaism: bound to the laws of the land and obligated to a covenant with God. On July 4th, our nation will observe its 239th birthday, commemorating our freedom

from tyrannical British rule and the establishment of the United States of America. It seems appropriate that we stop and consider what this flag and the nation it represents means to us. We should ask ourselves: What is it that makes me a citizen of the United States? Is it merely an accident of birth? What does it mean to be a US citizen? Am I a JewishAmerican, American-Jew, or are those terms the same? What does my country ask of me? What do I owe my country? L’ Shalom, Rabbi Mark

Rabbi Mark B. Goldfarb is the Rabbi of Temple Beth Ohr in La Mirada, CA. A Reform congregation celebrating its 56th year. Rabbi Goldfarb is a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and Neshamah: The Association of Jewish Chaplains.

Cantor Hass grew up in the Los Angeles area. She recently received her ordination from HUC-JIR. Among her early accomplishements, she worked for the Professional Leaders Project in Los Angeles – a small Jewish nonprofit catering to young adults in their 20s and 30s, as well as for the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles in the legal and entertainment divisions. Sara has worked as a song leader and tefillah coordinator at several URJ Camps, including URJ Jacobs Camp in Utica, MS, URJ Eisner Camp, and Camp Newman/Swig in Santa Rosa, CA. She spent fourteen summers at Camp Newman/Swig, and it was there that she discovered her love for Jewish music. Temple Israel is Cantor Hass’ first position since receiving her ordination. Previously, she has served as cantorial intern at Temple Beth David in Cheshire, CT, Temple Rodef Shalom in Fall’s Church, VA, Congregation Shma Koleinu in Houston, TX, and Beth El Temple Center in Belmont, MA.
