GOOD RETURN.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK VERY FAR to see how much the Jewish community has contributed to society. In fact you don’t have to look beyond your own backyard. Jewish pioneer Samuel Heller came for real estate, other Jews came to operate produce stalls. They helped transform the Long Beach area from what was once a small town into a thriving center of commerce and culture, building many of the landmarks and iconic businesses.

D U R I N G T H E 2 0 T H C E N T U RY,

our community came together to create the charitable organizations that took care of Jews in need, and they established the Federation to solve our greatest challenges. Today the Federation is still at the forefront of innovation, helping people make a bigger difference - as individual philanthropists and as a community here in the Greater Long Beach area, in Israel, and around the world.

If you would like to increase your impact, and align your charitable goals with your Jewish values, we can help. The Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation offer a range of expert philanthropic services including: • Philanthropic Advising • Donor Advised Funds • Multi-Generational Philanthropy • Strategic Grantmaking • Legacy Planning • Philanthropic Education

Morton & Susan Stuhlbarg AJCC Summer Stock Endowment Fund By Danny Levy, Director of Development

Michael Stuhlbarg

This past year we have shared with you the Power of Two: the Annual Community Campaign impact and the Fund for our Future stories about bequests and capital improvements to the campus. Now we’d like to share an individual story about program endowments through the Fund for our Future; programs that can be funded now with cash or stock, or funded into the fu-

ture through the establishment of an Endowment Fund. We are very lucky to have the support of Susan and Morton Stuhlbarg as they have just established the Morton & Susan Stuhlbarg Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC) Summer Stock Endowment. They have made provisions to bequeath funds to the Jewish Community Foundation, establishing an endowment fund for

the yearly administration of the AJCC Summer Stock Program, which will be named in honor of their son, Michael Stuhlbarg. It will now be known as the Michael Stuhlbarg Summer Stock Program. As you might imagine, at age thirteen Michael had no idea what career path he might take. However, when he was forced (by his sister, Laurie) to audition for a part in Bye Bye Birdie, he soon learned to enjoy acting, and of course, the applause and the acclaim that went with it all. After learning his craft at UCLA School of Theatre, and then receiving his BFA from The Juilliard School, he has spent the last 23 years creating a successful career as an actor. “We sincerely hope others will have the opportunity to make that choice after participating in the AJCC Summer Stock experience,” expressed the Stuhlbargs. We have many opportunities such as this across the community. You may wish to fund a current program now,

or set something up for the future. You may wish to provide all costs for the program, or contribute what you can to an already established fund. You might even be so moved to contribute to the Morton & Susan Stuhlbarg Alpert Jewish Community Center Summer Stock Endowment! You can participate in the Power of Two. No matter how big or how small, every community member can participate. Together we can and will secure the future of our Jewish Community, let us assist you in doing so. ANNUAL MEETING Honoring Our Leadership Deborah K. Goldfarb Chief Executive Officer, Jewish Federation Jewish Community Foundation

Each year the Jewish Federation and Community Foundation hold a combined annual meeting. This year, our Annual Meeting will take place at the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus on Thursday, June 12 at 7 pm. The entire community is invited to join in a reception, complete with wine and hors d’oeuvres prior to the meeting at 6 pm. During the evening, the two organizations will review their successes, elect and install new board members, and recognize leaders who have contributed to the furtherance of our missions in the community. Robert Baldwin Community Service Award The event is always a wonderful opportunity to come together to celebrate

our leadership. This year we are truly honored that Shirley and Eugene Ross will receive the Robert Baldwin Community Service Award. The Baldwin award recognizes dedicated volunteers for years of outstanding service through tzedakah, responsibility and support for Israel. The award is in memory of Robert Baldwin (1919-1992) whose life epitomized these principles and who was a loving role model for all whose lives he touched. Shirley’s contributions to our organizations, as a leader and a CPA have been innumerable. She spent 7 years as the Foundation’s Treasurer followed by a two-year term as Foundation President. She also served as Federation Treasurer and served a two-year term as Federation President. The Art of Revelation

R E F L E C T I O N S

By Rabbi Steven A. Moskowitz

This is how the moment of Revelation Rabbi Steven is described A. Moskowitz in the Torah: There is thunder, lightning, a dense cloud. God descends to this dimension in fire. Smoke rises up. The mountain trembles, and the people tremble. It is as if those aspects of creation which are inorganic and those which are organic are now merged in sympathetic resonance to the imminent presence of their Source. A horn blares. Yet, the Israelites’ senses are so convoluted that they see rather than hear those blasts and the roll of the thunder. Through all this interplay of sound and motion and light, there is a confounding of ordinary senses which discloses a new path to harmony with the Source of all life, with all of creation, with one’s fellow human beings. The moment at Mount Sinai is described in a palette rich with the media of the visual, movement, and musical arts.

It is art that provides the language which enables us to perceive what has always been there, but our complacency, our rigid orientation, and our stiff-necked attitude has kept us from seeing it. It was an artist, Bezalel, who was assigned the task of building a structure that would enable God to dwell among us. To see beyond the ordinariness, and discover there the extraordinary, this has always been the message of Jewish tradition. The appointed leader in our journey through the wilderness is one who sees that a bush is not a mere shrub. It is also a site of inflammatory truth: Free the enslaved! Our heritage esteems those gifted with the artistic talent to re-orient our vision through the darkness of the rote and the superficial to the light of texture and dimensionality. The primary talent of an artist is his ability to step away from the externalities of the thing and, disregard-

ing its outer form, gaze into its innerness and perceive its essence, and be able to convey this in his painting. This is how an artist can serve his Creator. (Rabbi Menachem Schneerson) Great artists disclose the light that our dullness to one another has enshrouded. The great 20th century chief rabbi and kabbalist Rav Kook once told a Jewish sculptor how much he admired the work of Rembrandt: I really think that Rembrandt was a tzaddik. We are told that when God created light, it was so strong that one could see from one end of the world to the other, but God was afraid that the wicked might abuse it. So God reserved that light for the righteous in the world to come. But now and then there are great men who are blessed and privileged to see it. I think that Rembrandt was one of them, and the light in his paintings is the very light that God created on Genesis day.

To disclose light is not the same thing as providing answers. In our tradition, answers tend to conclude the discussion and bring to a standstill the search for meaning. James Baldwin wrote: The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers. The art of the Revelation at Mount Sinai is its continuing capacity to disrupt our enslavement to the narrowest of paths and re-engage us in our construction of a world based on covenantal responsibility and mutual accountability. Rabbi Steven Moskowitz is Rabbi at Temple Israel in Long Beach. Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks, will be from sunset June 3 - nightfall June 5, 2014. Agriculturally, it commemorates the time when the first fruits were harvested and brought to the Temple. Historically, it celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.

The main topics will be family, finance, respect, intimacy, and commitment. Open discussions will be encouraged. “Our goal is to provide partici-

pants with the tools necessary to navigate their journey together,” said Debbie Feldman, Director of Clinical Services at JFCS. The cost to participate is $25 per week per couple, and the group will meet on Thursday evenings from 6 pm to 7 pm beginning on June 19. To register, please call JFCS. The program will include five featured speakers who are specialists in the assessment and diagnosis of these conditions, treatment options and planning, parenting skills, occupational therapy, and medication and its alternatives. Attendees will also be

invited to join support groups that will provide an ongoing exchange of information and ideas among parents like themselves who have children with these conditions. The support groups will be led by JFCS clinicians and will meet weekly. There is no charge to attend this event thanks to the generosity of Binnie and Jack

Berro and family. Reservations are required as space is limited. A light meal will be provided to participants. Please note that the event is for adults only. For more information and reservations, please call JFCS.

Mazel Tov Class of 2014 Anticipation and excitement is in the air at the Hebrew Academy as the year comes to a close and the middle and high school students prepare for their graduation. The Academy is a preschool through twelfth grade Jewish day school, which means that many of our graduates have been learning and growing together for well over a decade. Not only have they learned how to read, write and analyze English and Hebrew, but more importantly, they have learned how to apply their academics to

their everyday lives in order to make a positive contribution to this fast changing and complex world. The Academy has five core values and four main tenets. The school strives to help our students develop intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. When our alumni are asked what they remember from their Hebrew Academy days, their answers never cease to be a center for pride for their teachers, administrators, rabbis and the parents. Sometimes, you find an alumnus who only spent a

10 am – 2 pm. Families will have an opportunity to tour the campus, meet one of the

directors and ask any questions they may have. A pizza lunch will be available, free of charge, for all families to enjoy. “Camp families often convey that they wish they would have known about us sooner,” said Sender Engel, the camp director. “We thought it would be prudent to show off the campus and program on a quiet Sunday. With so many options, transportation, hot lunches, extended care, various day options and more, the SGI experience becomes one that will fit into any family’s lifestyle and schedule.” The ACA accredited camp

program runs from June 23August 22. At the open house, parents and children will learn about the schedule, field trips, counselors, hamster balls, laser tag, maze, swimming pools, imagination and game rooms, and much more. The open house will be held on the Silver Gan Israel/ Hebrew Academy campus and is open to the entire community. Please RSVP to admin@ CampSGI.com if you plan to join. Shared First-Hand Experiences year with us and he/she will always say – “that was the best year of my childhood life.” We are so very proud of our graduates who will celebrate their graduation the evening of June17th and are soon to be Hebrew Academy Alumni. We know that they will have the tools to be successful to go on with any pursuit they desire and become strong members of the Jewish community. We wish them the best and look forward to hear about their adult pursuits.

WE ARE THE HEBREW ACADEMY “At the Hebrew Academy my children and I are treated with warmth and understanding which makes us feel part of this fantastic community. Not only are my children receiving a stellar education, but they are also living and learning morals and ethics which will carry them through life at home, and in their careers.” – Valerie Bleakley & Family

Gerda Seifer, bottom center, with Hebrew Academy students

At the Hebrew Academy, all students are required to take a Jewish history course about the Holocaust. As part of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a survivor of the Holocaust spoke to the upper school students. One of the students wrote the following about her experience: On Tuesday, April 28, Gerda Seifer, a Holocaust survivor, came to our school to speak with us about her experiences during and after the Holocaust. She told us about her experiences while living in Poland under the Russian occupation for the first two

years of the war, something that is not commonly spoken about. Then, she described her various close brushes with death while she hid from the Nazis. After the war, she managed to find her way to England with the help of Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld. Until this day, she says that when she meets someone, she evaluates their “Jewish appearance” and if they could pass themselves off as a gentile. The Holocaust is something that will affect her for the rest of her life and is important for us to remember.
