FEATURE STORY

100 Days We Did It By Danny Levy, Director of Development

Hard to believe the 100 days of ImpACT went by so quickly. From our beginning in February to the middle of May we accomplished a lot. We as in, you, us, the community. Today we are Thanking you. Reached Our Goal For starters we reached our goal and raised over $1,000,000 towards the Federations 2015/5775 Annual Community Campaign and the Fund for our Future. We partnered, we empowered, we honored, advocated, we committed, we lead, we inspired, we engaged, we experienced, we invested, we enlightened and we volunteered. We Did It Together Through each of our partner agencies and local synagogues we have all made an impact in this community. Some of this impact we have shared with you here in our weekly emails and in the Chronicle. We've shared about the programs and services we support. We've shared about people, some who need help and others who

offer help. We've shared the concerns for the future of our community and the need for finding new ways to make sure we have a Jewish future here in Greater Long Beach. What Did You Do? What role did you play? Did you make your pledge to the Annual Community Campaign? (if not, there is still time to do so) Did you make a donation to any of the four Fund for our Future special funding projects of our partner agencies? Did you attend or volunteer for any of the Annual Community Campaign fundraisers, or a fundraiser for a partner agency or synagogue? Did you have a conversation with others about where our community is now and what will it be in the future? Did you ask yourself what do you want for your Jewish community today and tomorrow? What do you want from your Jewish Community? Help Close Another Goal This was truly is a testament to each other that we were able to raise over $1,000,000 in only 100 Days. Now to finish this off strong, we need to close out the Federations Annual Community Campaign as well. Remember that the 100 Days of ImpACT counted dollars raised for both the Annual Community Campaign and the Fund for our Future. It was great that monies were raised for both. The Annual Community Campaign still has a goal to hit to be able to support our partner agencies, local synagogues, Israel and Jews around the globe. We are currently at $1,149,510 and still need another $200,000 from previous donors. That's it - only $200,000 in 30 days come on, look what we did in 100 days. So if you have not yet sent in your 2015 pledge, please do so now! You can go directly to the donation

INSIDE THE CHRONICLE

The Jewish Community

Hebrew Academy: Fund for our Future Spotlight By Danny Levy, Director of Development

The Fund for our Future is for sustainability of programs, services and facilities so vital to our community. This month, we will focus on the Hewbrew Academy and their priorities for funding. Number One Priority The number one funding priority for Hebrew Academy is to provide scholarships to as many families as possible to give their children the opportunity to receive the excellent educational program the Academy offers. Jewish day school education is the most effective program to retain the youth as productive members of the Jewish community into their adult lives. Yet there are many families that would like to enroll their children and do not have the means. The Hebrew Academy provides scholarships for these deserving children based on financial need. More scholarship dollars will allow more children throughout the community to receive a quality general and Judaic education. Number Two Priority The second priority for funding is the very popular Enrichment Academy and

Success Center that the Academy offers. Enrichment Academy provides a variety of athletic and recreational activities for the students at the school together with general community youth. It includes the soccer club that the Academy has partnered with American Youth Soccer League to provide on the 11 acre Academy campus, funded in part from a Federation Annual Community Campaign Priority Grant, and varied activities including dance, martial arts and computer. The Success Center allows students to receive a variety of social and counseling services through the school counselor and her cadre of professionals including staff members from the JFCS (Jewish Family & Children’s Service). A well-rounded education should include a support system for its families and students and a variety of social and athletic programs. These programs fill that requirement and need to be expanded in order for the Academy to provide the program at its highest level of excellence.

VISIONS Spotlight

Number Three Priority Third, is to fund a marketing campaign in order to share the successful program of the Academy and enroll many new students into the program. There are many families who are simply not aware of the fine college bound education that the Academy provides in a Jewish environment. A successful campaign will identify the Jewish families in our area, educate them on the components of a successful college bound program and show how the Academy delivers that program in its optimum. New families are impressed with the progress their children experience at the school and are surprised that they never realized it until they witnessed it themselves. Number Four Priority The fourth funding priority is for capital improvement. In the recent past, partially through grants from the Jewish Federation, the Alevy Foundation and the Academy auction, improvements have been made in the addition of two soccer fields, a kindergarten playground, the library with an adjoining

patio and the computer center. Our present needs are to upgrade the assembly hall and theater and add a gym. As the student population is increasing in the younger grades and more of the general public is attending our programs, the Hebrew Academy would like to provide even more services by modernizing and upgrading the campus. Funding these capital projects would allow us to increase the number of children we serve. Generously support the future of the Hebrew Academy and our community through the Fund for our Future.

Each year the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation hold a combined annual meeting. This is a very special evening when we review our successes, elect and install new board members and officers, and recognize leaders who have contributed to the furtherance of our missions in the community. We are proud to honor Lea Gerber this year, as outgoing president of the Jewish Community Foundation, for her two years of service to the community. Lea has leant tremendous expertise and leadership to her position. The Annual Meeting will take place at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus on Thursday, June 11 at 7 pm. Seifer Holocaust Memorial Dedication

On April 19 over 100 people (family, friends and community members) assembled to dedicate the new Seifer Holocaust Memorial at the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Jewish Federation campus. Gerda and Harold Seifer created this memorial as a permanent tribute to Gerda’s parents Edyta and Henryk Krebs, who perished in the Holocaust. In the memorial, is a photo of Edyta with Gerda and poem by her daughter Julia, which Julia read at the dedication ceremony. The poem was the catalyst for the vision of the memorial which also features the word Zachor (remember) in large

bronze Hebrew letters. It also features the words Never Forget which has rust stains that flow down the walls to symbolize tears. The Seifer’s worked with staff and local artists Robin and Philip Smith and the result is a memorial that is peaceful and contemplative. The team

that worked with Philip and Robin included: Gary Tesch, Stone Mason; Angel Meza of American Fine Arts Foundry, Zachor Letters Casting; MalaKai Kindred, Zachor Letters Sculpting; and Roger

Sanderson of Pipeworks, Fountain Fabrication. Gerda and Harold chose to work with the Jewish Community Foundation and make this memorial one of the projects that they endowed through their estate. Any community member can leave a bequest to fund

a project near and dear to them, both large and small. The Seifer’s also established a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund at the Foundation which allows them to fund projects

and provide continued support to multiple Jewish causes and agencies. Community members can contribute to support the annual Yom HaShoah community observance and ongoing Holocaust education in our community through another fund at the Foundation, the Gerda Seifer Yom HaShoah fund. Next time you are here

on campus, please visit the Seifer Memorial and sit for a while and remember Edyta and Henryk and think about your own lasting legacy to our community. The Jewish Community Foundation staff is available to help you with all of your philanthropic goals. For more information please call us at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008.

JEWISH LIFE & CULTURE

Message from the Executive Director The Joys of Summer Camp

Many of my favorite memories come from my times at summer camp. Whether it was here at our JCC’s day camp—then named Camp Kadima—or at our community’s sleep-away camp, Camp Komaroff, camp was the time of year I looked forward to the most when I was growing up. Much of my Jewish identity and many of my life-long friends are from my summers at camp. It was also the place where I learned photography, Israeli dancing, how to swim, how to tie-dye shirts (which I still love to wear!), and much, much more! The Alpert JCC is so fortunate to have our very own Camp Komaroff (June 22-August 21), so that this generation of children has the same opportunities I had growing up. This summer is even more exciting than ever as our Summer Camp Task Force and Natalie Chernik, our Camp Director, have worked all year to take all the great aspects of last summer’s camp and add some fun new twists to make summer 2015 one to remember. This summer, our campers will be able to choose from almost 30 different Chugim (special interest groups). In addition, there will be exciting weekly themes, fun-filled field trips, Park Days, Beach Days, Mitzvah Days, Late Nights, Overnights, and of course, our favorite Funky Fridays and Shabbat activities. It’s times like this that I wish I was young again; going to Camp Komaroff for a week or two—or the entire summer—sounds amazing!!! To me, all the programs and trips are great, but one of the most important aspects of summer camp is that it gives kids a chance to explore, learn, and try new things in a safe and secure environment. Camp Komaroff is fully accredited and provides a wonderful environment due to our exceptional, well-trained camp staff, our top-notch camp leadership, and the beautiful and safe Alpert JCC facilities. Sending your child to Camp Komaroff is a gift that extends past this summer. Your child will learn, make friends, and be part of a nurturing environment that is full of excitement, good values, and adventure. Most important, your child will have the time of their life! Who knows, by going to Camp Komaroff, they might grow up like me, to become an Executive Director of a JCC. But whatever the future brings, I do know Camp Komaroff is another way the AJCC is Your Center For Life!

What’s so Jewish about Father’s Day?

Honoring our fathers and mothers is an everyday mitzvah, so, what’s particularly Jewish about the third Sunday in June?

The fifth commandment tells us clearly we must honor our parents. According to traditional Jewish understanding, this means honoring them not just on one day, but every day. Does this mean Father’s Day is an unnecessary holiday?

Katie Clowdus, kclowdus@alpertjcc.org, (562) 426-7601, ext. 1024.

Rabbi Brad Hirschfield tries to answer this question in his New York Jewish Week opinion piece, titled “Father’s Day: It’s a Mitzvah.”

8 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE | SIVAN-TAMMUZ |

Rabbi Brad Hirschfield writes: Our relationships with those commandments, like our relationships with our parents, can themselves become hollow routines that fail to inspire and evoke our best behavior. That’s where the brilliance of Father’s Day comes in… special days, days like Father’s Day, break routines; they shake up the norms and demand special attention. Indeed, Father’s Day offers a special time for parents and children alike to refocus on the fifth commandment, to honor our parents. While honoring our parents is an everyday mitzvah, Father’s Day affords us the opportunity to refocus our appreciation. So this Fathers Day, and everyday, be sure to say, “Thanks!” Article Source: [pjlibrary.org/pj-blog.com] [June 12, 2012]

Hebrew Academy Recipe for Success On April 19-22 the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) visited the Hebrew Academy to validate the school’s self-study process and report which began 18 months earlier. The WASC visiting team was very impressed with the growth and quality of programs that Hebrew Academy offers its students and families, its high level of academic performance, and its warm family-oriented environment. After three days of touring classrooms and meeting with staff, parents, and administration, the WASC team delivered their initial findings to the school community. Some of the

highlights of their report stated that the Hebrew Academy: • has a devoted and passionate staff • provides a bold, innovative, rigorous dual curriculum and many technological resources • offers student support services that are comprehensive and effective and include individualized plans as well as training for teachers and parents to help address issues in class and at home • maintains and continuously upgrades a beautiful, safe, and secure campus The Hebrew Academy looks forward to receiving the WASC Commission’s final

We choose The Hebrew Academy because we value education. Our daughters receive an extraordinary, individualized academic education while gaining a strong core foundation of Jewish values and ideas. We confidently know our girls are being academically challenged within a loving,

nurturing environment that includes great hands-on classes such as art and music. We have done extensive research to find the best school for our children, and we have chosen The Hebrew Academy because we do not believe any school in the region can compare.

“Keys to Success” Group Helps Jobseekers With high school and college graduations in full swing, many young people are looking for guidance and support to prepare for their first job searches. Others have long passed these milestones, but due to the Great Recession and the structural shift of the economy, they now find themselves unemployed or under-employed. For those in either of these situations, Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) offers “Keys to Success”, a support group that guides jobseekers through the job search process, taking them step by step from resume writing to interview preparation. This program, which is

free of charge to participants thanks to funding in part by NCJW Long Beach Branch, is led by Matthew Borja, MFT Intern, and meets every Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Prior to returning to the university to become a marriage and family therapist, Borja worked for 17 years in human resources and job development in the employment industry. “My past career experience serves me well as I help people who are hoping to find a job or career path that is a good fit for them. Whether they are new to the work force or are displaced and seeking a new direction, ‘Keys to Success’ allows participants

to benefit from my real-world experience,” says Borja. He added, “In recent weeks, four of our participants have found jobs or internship using what they have learned in the program.” He is assisted by JFCS trainee Erica Kurowski. Resume preparation and review, job placement ideas, job transition strategies, and the benefit of group input, support, and sharing are all features of the sessions. There are also guest speakers and site visits to agencies such as OneStop in Westminster, which enlighten and inspire participants. The weekly sessions are held at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg

SAVE THE DATE Jewish Federation Campus and are open to the public. For further information or questions , please contact JFCS at (562) 427-7916 or e-mail Matthew directly at matthewjamesborja@gmail. com.

Why Jewish Summer Camp? By Rabbi Abba Perelmuter

Rabbi Abba Perelmuter is the Rabbi at Shul By The Shore in Long Beach

There is no doubt that students all across the world wait impatiently for the last day of school. The anticipation of a relaxing, fun, and carefree summer carry the students through the long months of spring. We all remember the exhilarating feeling of walking out of our school building on the last day, never having to return until the following fall months. The summer provides

a wonderful and unique opportunity for your child to have hands on Jewish experiences. In fact, all of the latest research points to the importance of a Jewish summer camp experience. The value added to your child is immeasurable. Whether you send your child to overnight camp, or to Jewish day camp, you will be providing a lasting opportunity for your child. When describing the benefits of a Jewish camp, the Lubavitcher Rebbe said, “This summer experience could imbue the young boy or girl with the necessary warmth and vitality of Yiddishkeit which would remain with them for the rest of the summer and the year to come.”

A young, dynamic counselor can have a major impact on a camper. I have personally seen many young Jews connect to Judaism through their camp counselor. Campers relate to their counselors on a different level than to a teacher in a classroom. Often, the Jewish learning seems more relevant and exciting coming from a counselor. I clearly remember sending off my 6 children, albeit some reluctantly, to overnight camp. Some ran with excitement and vigor into camp, while some walked slowly with trepidation; none were given a choice. The beautiful thing was how they all came back full of joy, happiness, and a renewed excitement

for Judaism. In camp they learned about sharing, caring, patience, team work, and of course how to prank the counselors. My wife and I always had to be careful before getting into bed for the first few weeks after camp! Unlike in a school setting, camp has the unique ability to teach important lessons about our heritage, how to be a good person, Jewish songs and prayers, all without feeling like a chore. Even swimming and trips turn into a teachable moment in Jewish camps! Please consider giving your child one of the most worthwhile experiences of their life, Jewish summer camp! Happy Summer!
