Dayenu (
): It would have been enough for us…
By Danny Levy, Director of Development
W
e gladly sing Dayenu with family and friends gathered around the Passover table as the Seder comes close to ending. This lively traditional Passover song is over one thousand years old. The song is about being grateful to G-d for all of the gifts given to the Jewish people, such as taking us out of slavery, giving us the Torah and Shabbat and had G-d only given one of the gifts, it would still have been enough. This teaches us to have a much greater appreciation for all of them as a whole. In the same way we have a great appreciation for the spring season. It lets us know that soon flowers, plants, and life will be blooming. We celebrate life anew while remembering the past. Here are a few ways to celebrate together here in the Long Beach community.
COMMUNITY YOM HASHOAH “Remember the past, live in the present, and believe in the future of our people.” - Abba Kovner On Sunday, April 7 from 2:00-4:00 pm, the Alpert Jewish Community Center, Jewish Federation, and Jewish Community Foundation are proud to host a community wide commemorative service featuring Long Beach area rabbis, cantors and clergy. The event will include a candle lighting and memorial service with survivors and families of survivors. Rabbi Drew Kaplan, Beach Hillel Campus Rabbi, will be leading the community’s rabbis and cantors in a memorial service that incorporates the prayers and songs for Yom HaShoah. The service will conclude with a remembrance of local survivor and philanthropist Eugene Schlesinger. We are honored to have Dr. Rafael Medoff as the featured speaker this year. Dr. Medoff is the founding director of The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies. He is the author of seven books about the Holocaust, Zionism, and the history of American Jewry. Dr. Medoff has taught Jewish history at Ohio State University, Purchase College of the State University of New York, and elsewhere, and served as associate editor of the American Jewish History. Reflecting his interest in the use of cutting-edge media to teach about the Holocaust, Medoff has collaborated with comic book artists Art Spiegelman and Sal Amendola on political cartoons and graphic novels. In 2010, Medoff and comics creator Neal Adams teamed with Disney Educational Productions to produce They Spoke Out: American Voices Against the Holocaust, an online educational motion comics series that tells stories of Americans who protested Nazis or helped rescue Jews
Jewry. For Szyk, WWII was not a time of moral ambiguity, but of moral clarity. Szyk saw the war as a classical example of the struggle between good and evil, freedom and tyranny, murderers of the innocent and liberators of the oppressed. The selections in this exhibit demonstrate why Szyk was called “a soldier in art.” COMMUNITY PASSOVER HAPPENINGS (Check the Area Community Seders on page 12 to see the Passover Seder schedule.)
during the Holocaust. Medoff has served as a consultant to a number of television and movie projects, including Holocaust: The Untold Story, which was broadcast on The History Channel in 2001 and nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Television Documentary. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored through the Gerda Seifer Yom HaShoah Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation. The Jewish Community Foundation has honored local Holocaust survivor Gerda Seifer, by naming the Yom HaShoah Fund for her. If you wish to make a contribution to this fund, please mail your check payable to the Jewish Community Foundation, Gerda Seifer Yom HaShoah Fund, 3801 East Willow St., Long Beach, CA 90815 or call 562-426-7601 EXT 1314. In conjunction with the Yom HaShoah event, the Pauline and Zena Gatov Gallery is presenting Justice Illuminated: The Art of Arthur Szyk from March 13-April 22. An ardent Zionist, Szyk portrayed the Jews as a heroic people who continually resisted the oppression of their enemies, fighting for their own freedom and that of others. This travelling exhibit of reproductions of Szyk’s works focuses on World War II, America and the Jewish Response. Even before the United States entered the war in 1941, Szyk enlisted his talents in the war effort. His drawings and watercolors often appeared in the New York Times, Post, Colliers and Time. The drawings brutally mocked the Axis leaders, powerfully attacked their policies, condemned their actions and sympathetically depicted the plight of their innocent victims. Szyk was among the first artists to portray the barbarism of the Nazi death machine and its systematic slaughter of European

reflections
Passover and The Exodus By Rabbi Howard Laibson
It should come as no surprise to any readers that I, as a rabbi, encourage engagement in religious rituals. That is not to say, however, that I approach rituals in a mindless way. I used the word “engagement” earlier because I often find deep meaning in our tradition’s rich variety of rituals; they capture my imagination and “fill me up” spiritually. But when that sense of meaning isn’t there for me, and when I sincerely search for it and am left spiritually empty, I don’t feel bound to that particular ritual act. The recitation of the story of Passover and participating in the Pesach Seder never leave me unfulfilled. The narrative itself is packed with meaning, historically and spiritually. It tells of a small, powerless people who – beyond reasonable expectations – somehow emerge from Egyptian servitude as a free people. They are
dragged on a long journey from a slave mentality to that of free men and women, committed to an unseen God whose central concerns focus on loyalty to God and one another, and the application of ethics, justice and compassion to all people. First, let me tell you what I’m not saying. I’m not saying that we know with certainty that the Exodus occurred as depicted in the Torah. There is very little extra-biblical or archeological evidence to support it. Neither is there any such evidence to disprove it. But the impact of the Exodus has played an enormous role in shaping Judaism. In point of fact, had there been no historical memory of the Exodus, there would be no Judaism. It is the central myth of our religion. Everything we are and hope to be is informed by the Exodus. I’m also not saying that the escape from Egyptian
slavery had to have been the result of miracles, signs and wonders. My Orthodox colleagues will differ with me in this regard, and they are, of course, welcome to. But I stand by my long held belief that God often motivates us, inspires us and guides us to do great and morally correct acts . . . but does not do miracles. If we waited around for God to save the day miraculously, we ourselves would never take responsibility for making our situation and others’ better. And Judaism is all about responsibility. I am convinced that some sort of Exodus definitely occurred. I suspect that the fact that it did, seemed so implausible to later generations of our Hebrew ancestors, that they enhanced the story with miracles and plagues in order to make it more believable. That they did so with brilliant literary style, so that the story and
its universal message of the divinity of freedom have touched Rabbi Howard O. Laibson the hearts of millions of people for millennia, is testament alone to the significance of the event. And that is why I never tire of the rituals associated with the festival and its Seder. Its message is old and new every time I encounter it. Passover is perhaps the most frequently observed Jewish holiday. The Seder is likewise perhaps the most observed Jewish ritual. My family joins me in wishing you, your loved ones and friends a truly enriching Passover experience.Embrace it for the meaning it can generate for your life.
Rabbi Howard Laibson is Rabbi at Congregation Shir Chadash in Lakewood.

Dear Alpert JCC Members, It is with mixed emotions that we inform you that Jeff Antonoff, our Executive Director, will be leaving his position at the Alpert JCC when his current contract comes to an end in June 2013. This has been a difficult decision for Jeff. He is deeply committed to the success of the Alpert JCC, but, along with his family, has decided that it is time to relocate back to the East Coast. Needless to say, we have been incredibly fortunate to have had Jeff at the helm of the Alpert JCC for the past nine years. His remarkable dedication, and attention to every aspect of our Center, has resulted in success and stability for our organization. He has helped us to achieve a solid financial position, and has markedly improved every program and department within our agency. We will be forever in his debt for his vision, guidance and expertise, and we know that he will continue to share his talents with us over the coming months, and beyond. We are currently beginning the search process for Jeff’s replacement under the guidance of our Immediate Past President, Lynne Kass. Lynne will chair the Search Committee, which will include current President, Stephen Gordon, and ten additional members (four current Board members, two Past-Presidents, and four community leaders). This committee will work in concert with Janet S. Elam, Vice President of the JCC Association (our national organization), in conducting a national search for a new Executive Director. On behalf of the Alpert JCC Board of Directors, please accept our thanks for your continued support and commitment to the success of the Alpert JCC. If you have any questions, or would like additional information, please do not hesitate to contact either of us. Sincerely, Stephen Gordon

An ardent Zionist, Szyk portrayed Jews as a heroic people who continually resisted the oppression of their enemies, fighting for their own freedom and that of others. This travelling exhibit of reproductions of Szyk’s works focuses on World War II, America and the Jewish Response. The New York Times called his anti-fascist cartoons “Weapons of War.” His work often appeared in the New York Times, the Post, Collier’s and Time. Szyk was among the first artists to portray the barbarism of the Nazi death machine and its systematic slaughter of European Jewry. The selections in this exhibit demonstrate why Szyk was called “a soldier in art.” This exhibit is made possible by the Gerda Seifer Yom Ha’Shoah Fund

Alpert JCC Joins the Fight for Youth Fitness
Must register by Friday, March 8. Drop-ins will not be admitted.
The statistics are sobering. Almost one out of five children in the U.S. is overweight or obese, and sadly this trend is not slowing down. Overweight and obese children face not only the teasing and bullying they encounter at school, but these children face an increased risk for a number of medical conditions when they grow older. The AJCC is responding to this dangerous trend by introducing two new programs specifically designed to increase youth fitness. Our Fit Families program, sponsored by MemorialCare, is a free program designed to encourage healthy habits in children and teens. During our Fit Families meeting, participants take part in a fun aerobic activity and then receive a healthy habit lesson presented by MemorialCare physicians. Fit Families is designed for children and teens ages 6-18, along with their parents and siblings. Fit Families meets the fourth Thursday of each month from 5:45-7:45pm at the Alpert JCC. Youth FitCamp is designed for youth 8-12 years of age. This is an all-out, 50-minute conditioning class that features widely used basic training exercises. There will be running, hopping, skipping, jumping, interval training and many other exercises using weights, resistance bands and even each participant’s own body weight to increase cardiovascular efficiency. Boys’ meet Mon. & Wed. from 4-5pm. Girls’ meet Tue. & Thur., from 4-5pm. For further info. about these programs, contact Cindi Massengale, Wellness & Fitness Manager, at cmassengale@alpertjcc.org or (562) 426-7601, ext. 1056.

They find themselves in the midst of a whole new culture, involving matchmakers, homemade gefilte fish, and Yiddish-influenced grammar. Dr. Benor explains

Beach Hillel: We’re on a Boat The Jewlicious Festival is back! It will be returning March 8-10 for its ninth year, making it Jewlicious 9.0. Beach Hillel is very excited that for the second year in a row it will be taking place at the historic Queen Mary in Long Beach. This three-day weekend is known for bringing Jewish college students and young adults from all over the United States under one roof, or in this case on one ship. Once again, participants have the opportunity to stay on this historical ship during the festival so they’ll never miss a moment. During this weekend, participants get to spend Shabbat together and build relationships. It is a special event for Beach Hillel, not only do we produce and staff the festival but our students love attending every year. They enjoy meeting other Jewish students, knowing that it’s happening in their community. Candice Lebowitz, a CSULB student said, “A ship filled with Jewish students and young adults my age, tons of food, and amazing beach weather right in my community! Where else do you find an opportunity like this?” It’s a great experience for our Beach Hillel students to meet students from dif-

ferent organizations, where they can enjoy all the music, arts, and culture together. After Shabbat, there will be live music and concerts. Participants will enjoy delicious kosher food and a snack bar open until the late hour, keeping them energized for the constant programs. There will also be special speakers that will lead compelling discussions. This year, producer/ actor Shmuley Boteach, will be the keynote speaker on Friday night. We are looking forward to his talk. This festival is open to Jewish students and young professionals from any Jewish sect, with any cultural or political background. It’s an amazing way to meet people from the Long Beach Jewish community or from around the United States. Every year the festival gets more exciting and entertaining. You don’t want to miss out who will show up this year! To learn more, visit www.jewliciousfestival.com.

Visionary Dinner - March 3rd
The Hebrew Academy’s annual Visionary Awards Dinner will take place on Sunday, March 3 at The Four Seasons Hotel, Beverly Hills. This dinner gives the organization an opportunity to honor leaders in our community who have made positive differences in our students’ lives or in the lives of fellow Jews. The funds that are raised provide our award winning program to many deserving students at the Academy. This year, we are honoring Dr. Nathan Newman with the Leadership Award. Nathan Newman, M.D., born in Iran, joined his sister Ziba in the USA along with his parents, Dr. Samuel and Tajy Newman, and found a new home at The Hebrew
Academy. He continued his education and training at the most prestigious educational institutes in the USA. Dr. Newman established his practice in Beverly Hills as a Board Certified Dermatologist and Cosmetic Surgeon, alongside his physician father and brother Armand. He is on the forefront of stem cell therapy and the innovator of the Stem Cell LiftR. He is active in and has formed and headed numerous Jewish and proIsrael organizations. Dr. Newman and his wife Rinat are blessed with three children who attend a Jewish Day School near their home, and continue the unbroken chain of our rich Jewish heritage. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to Sidney Mendlovitz, whose parents came through Ellis Island in the early 1900’s, was born in McAllen, Texas and later moved to Long Beach. Mr. Mendlovitz attended Wilson
High School and then continued his education at Pacific Coast University. Although he has practiced criminal law in the past, he now practices general law because he loves the diversity general law has to offer. He finds general practice to be very rewarding and has sustained his law practice strictly on word of mouth. Mr. Mendlovitz’s daughter, Elayne also attended the same law school in Long Beach. She worked with her father in Lakewood from the day she passed the bar to the day she passed away. The Mendlovitz family values Jewish education and have been long time supporters of The Hebrew Academy. If you are interested in attending or finding out more about how to donate to The Hebrew Academy or nominate a prospective future honoree, please contact Rabbi Yitzchok Newman at 714-898-0051.
The Hebrew Academy Adopts a Pilot
Each spring, fifth grade students in more than 1400 classes across the country “adopt” Southwest Airlines pilots through the Adopt A Pilot program, a course that leads students through science, geography, math, writing and other core subjects, based in aviation related activities. Although there is a long waiting list, we are most fortunate to have been included in the national program sponsored by Southwest Airlines and the Smithsonian Air and Space
Museum. For the past 10 years, our adopted pilot, Charles Goldblum, has worked with the Adopt a Pilot program and Valley Beth Shalom Day School in Encino, as well as other schools in the Los Angeles area. Since he now lives close to Huntington Beach, he decided to work with a school closer to his home. He was particularly interested in working within the Jewish community because as a small child he was interested in aviation and there were a few mentors within his community who were also airline pilots. The cost associated with the program is paid by Southwest Airlines and the
comprehensive curriculum supports our current schedule and curriculum. Through the program we have adopted Mr. Goldblum for one month, during which time he comes into the classroom for about an hour, one day each week for four weeks. While the program is intended to be educational, it is a blast for the students and Charles as well. We are so excited to have Charles involved with our fifth grade. We are learning so much, and are proud to say that he has expressed his positive impression of our students’ knowledge, skills and interest. Way to go, fifth graders!
22nd Annual Golf Classic
The entire community is invited at the annual Hebrew Academy Golf Tournament on Monday, May 9. Tell the office you’ll be on assignment, unavailable, or with a very important client. Tell them anything, just so you can take the day off for a great round of golf at a sublime private club, the SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach. The Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Confronting Anti-Semitism program helps Jewish youth, their families, and other community members develop the essential skills needed to confront insensitive or hateful comments and behaviors. It also provides tools to challenge anti-Semitic myths with fact and provides strategies to
respond to hate-motivated incidents in school and the community at large. Confronting Anti-Semitism workshops are interactive, can be customized to address specific needs or audiences, are available in various lengths. “The program has evolved from the issues teens encounter at school, to one that
holistically addresses issues faced by college students and community members,” says Melissa Carr, ADL’s Orange County/Long Beach Regional Director. Contact the ADL at 714-953-2860 for more information or to schedule a workshop for your student or community group.
